Hi….I’m in Massena.
This is just how things worked out. I’m going to miss John Jay vs. Rye…for the third time. I’m not happy about it.
You won’t be hearing much from me, but I’ll try to throw a quick update up here whenever I can. By the way, the name of the rink Clarkstown North is playing in tomorrow? The Massena Arena. I’m not making this up. A rhyming rink.

rumor has it that it is a very hard arena to play in…student body shows alot of support for big games…old…is this accurate dan?

I dont think its right at all for you to be all the way up there when you have a SECTIONAL FINAL game tonight where your actually suppose to be covering considering the journal news is down here, why did u decide to go up there?
I think Dan should be up there. It’s Division 1 STATES. The big boys. Real hockey. Your game will get covered by another writer…what’s the big deal?
other than the parents and a few other people.. who really cares about the JJ/rye game. Good choice going up to Massena.. division 1 states!!! you are correct Division 1.. real hockey.. sorry JJ and Rye but you are the minor leagues at this point.. no offense
I don’t think Dan will be able to respond at all. Not sure how easy it is to pick up a WiFi signal up there. Lots of cows, not too many people. I think they’re about 30 years behind the rest of the wold in Technology. He may have to stand on top of the Massena Arena with a Kettle drum to send his story back down here for publishing.
It’s like who do you cover in basketball?...Mt. Vernon or Rye Neck?...the answer is obvious.
How does Massena even get into the outbracket tournament. I went on the Section 10 website and I see that they finished 2nd in the 4 team league and then lost the first round of the sectional playoffs. Can anyone answer this?
I think in Section 10, the do a little tournament of their own, from all teams eliminated from the playoffs, to determine who gets the Outbracket bid from that section… pretty weird huh?
Will an olympic sized rink really help North? I mean if they don’t use any depth, those first line players will be exhausted chasing that puck around a larger rink. I see how it would help though, more skating room for their snipers to manuever.
Massena may be in second but they only lost to the first place team by one goal in overtime. Doesnt look like much scoring going on in Section 10

After much research…..In section 10 the sectional winner goes to the State quarter finals ( Canton High School) and the NEXT highest seed in the REGULAR SEASON (Masenna High finished 2nd)goes to the out bracket game. Section 10 places great emphasis on the regular season.

For all of you who think JJ v RYE is not worth going to, it would be more exciting to see this game then to see North get embarassed. These teams have played some close games and its sure to be a thriller.
and the winner of this game is done in the first round of states. Neither team has beaten anyone near the caliber of what they will face upstate.
Not every section sends the runner up. I believe Section 5 and/or section 6 send the winner of the sectional tourney to the quarters and the winner of the regular season league title to the outbracket. In our section, that would have had the same result. In the event that is the same team, then I’m not sure if it is the regular season runner up or the tournament runner up that goes to the outbracket.
GO NORTH!!! No matter what happens upstate with the big boys you have made us proud this season and gone above and beyond what anyone thought!
Section 5 figures out the outbracket just like we do down here. Fairport lost to Aquinas in the finals, therefore Fairport enetered the outbracket
Who thought Pelham would make it all the way to the final 4 last year. John Jay and Rye have a chance to win a game or 2 in the states. Section 1 has certainly closed the gap as far as talent is concerned. I will say this much, I bet whoever wins tonight plays a competitive game in the states win or lose.
The trip up is not to bad the trip back is a bitch!!
Whoever says that Rye hasn’t played the caliber of team they will face upstate knows absolutely NOTHING. Rye has played four upstate teams during this season and last, including Salmon River (section 10). JJ/Rye do your research next time.
At the beginning of this season Rye played 2 very close games in the Rome NY tourney, both went to overtime. Everyone underestimates Rye and hopefully they show you all up tonight.

Rye and John Jay both beat the #4 seed Mamaroneck this year.And were competitive in the games verse North and Suffern. JJ or Rye will do fine in the states. THey will not get embarassed.
are you nuts.. yes the top teams in div. 2may be able to do well in division 1 but no way are they on the same level as north or suffern or mahopac for that matter… and i bet it will be a great game tonight.. i also saw a great squirt game last week.. ha ha

Stop degrading D2. Its Section 1 hockey we should all be cheering. JJ/Rye winner will have their photo on the front page tomorrow morning while CN will have a small blurb somewhere on page 4. Dan does what he is told, he is an employee. Its not like the game wont get covered.

to answer some of the questions I’ve seen…
Yes, someone is covering the game at Brewster tonight, though I don’t know who. It’s much easier to get someone to go up there than to get someone to go to Massena, which is why I’m here.
Massena Arena is a pretty interesting place. It looks olympic size, and there’s another rink right next to it, outside. Inside, it’s got a press box about four times the size of the one over at the Hommocks, as well as an enclosed box in the corner that I’ll try to weasel my way into.
Massena’s bid in the state outbracket was based on their regular season standing. They knew they were in the state tournament before their section tournament began.
And my internet access is a little limited up here, so I’ll be in and out.
All of Massena’s games are broadcast on the radio up here. And I was actually just watching a game between Liverpool and Ithaca on TV in my room.
Ain’t it great that they broadcast these games upstate!
C’mon Cablevision, give me a good reason not to switch to satellite or verizon. I’m not interseted in a Saint Anthony’s of Jersey City vs. Linden basketball game.
How about the Journal News..maybe in the future they could establish webcasts of local high school games that people in section 1 are interested in..it would be great exposure for the JN…Dan..talk this up to your editors..
All sectional championship games in all sports should be on news 12. Instead all they do is replay the same newscasts 20 times in a row. How great would it be to watch these games on public tv. ITs a shame.
Hey “who cares” please don’t put Mahopac in with Suffern and North. Mahopac has never won a thing…they are cinsistent “also rans”. Also, when Suffern had an awesome team a few years ago, Pelham beat them twice ( I believe their only 2 league losses) so lets not put down the smaller schools. John Jay, Pelham, Fox Lane, Rye are all a lot better than most of the big schools.
Rye is probably the smallest school in section 1, they have a lot of talented kids that can compete with any team. Although they are not as deep as teams like suffern and north they can’t be overlooked
while ur coming back down 81 south tomorrow, how about u spend a night or two in syracuse and then hang a right onto 490 West and then spend a few nights in buffalo to watch the fordham v st joe’s game for catholic states? just a thought

anybody know why a lot of Buffalo area teams do not participate in the State tournament? and why doesn’t Long Island? LI has some great travel and junior programs, but nothing at the public high school level. what’s up with that? anyone know?
Tourney time
Because those high school hockey program are club teams, not sanctioned varsity teams….. So they go to a club high school state tourney sanctioned by USA Hockey.
Any idea why Section 1 teams must drive to Section 10 or 2 locations for games and not the other way around? Clarkstown North at Massena, Suffern vs. Shed at Clifton Park, and the Division 2 winner at the Section 10 winner (probably at Clarkson – about 360 miles away). Did the Section 1 officials not show up when all these things were decided?
it rotates around…Suffern played the regionals @ Shen 2 years ago and then Shen came down to Suffern last year…Now Suffern goes back to Shen this Saturday…Pelham played Burnt Hills/Scotia in the regionals last year in a game played at the ice hutch in Mt. Vernon…so the winner of D2 rotates with the years and travels to Section 10…Also last year in the first game of the outbracket CBA came down to Sport-O-Rama and lost to North 8-1…This year CBA hosted North.

Montreal Canadiens but theres very few teams it’s

Long Island has some of the best travel club programs in the state. The Public Schools also are club. St. Mary’s High School club team would probably win section 1 most years.

Hey, this North coach has done a really good job this year. Especially as a rookie. TO get these playing like this way upstate, after a heartbreaking loss is a real good job. I mean Massena is supposed to be really good this year. So far it is 4-0, but hopefully I am not jinxing anything.

they are 10-5-1 they won some non league games as well
as league games there in third place. I think they split
the serise with Orchard park theres 2 teams kenmore East
and Kenmore west 1 is division 1 I think east and the other
is division 2 I think west. probably another serise split.
