Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley with Harold Gutmann

Clarkstown North 7, Massena 2

February
27

Nobody’s laughing at Section 1 hockey up here tonight. Ouch.
————————
Later that night…

I had to cut a lot from the story for the paper because it ran too long. Basically, this was a much different approach for North than their last game. Against CBA, they scored four goals in the first five minutes, then let CBA come back and take a third period lead. This time they played defensively, and they didn’t even have four shots in the first five minutes. But they eventually got their chances, and they capitalized on all of them. It’s a little like the style Suffern plays.

Chris McIndoe had 31 saves. Both Massena goals were in the third period.

And of course Matt Willows had five goals. That helps.

I have to get some rest so I can head over to Buffalo in the morning.

  1. big fan

dan, was the game as lopsided as it sounded?

  2. Daniel Kiernan

Yeah. I was a little worried in the opening minutes because McIndoe was seeing a lot of shots, but North got a few quick breaks, and Matt Willows finished all of them. The kid had 5 goals and 2 assists.

  3. NORTH FAN

    Matt Willows = GOD

OK – is he the best Section 1 player we’ve seen since Jon Foster? Survey Says – YES

  4. fan2

I second that!!! So proud of all these boys for giving such a great effort—where are all those disbelievers now!!!

  5. suffern fan

very impressive.. is it possible to play north in the final.. not sure how the brackets work.. anyone know the site where it shows the brackets..? wouldn’t that be great!!!

  6. bracket man

Division 1 High School Hockey State Tournament

Here is a bracket i created myself and u can predict it if u want to. At the top of the page click predict it!

  7. hmmmm

if both teams win out then yes they will meet and only meet in the NYS finals

  8. NORTH FAN

that would be great… but we both gotta win a few games to get there…. take one at a time!

  9. bracket man

Wait the link didnt copy to the blog.

    http://www.bracketmaker.com/tlist.cfm?tid=145725

  10. bracket man

SOmeobdy let me know if they copy and pasted that and got to it.

  11. suffern fan

i found out myself.. north and suffern could and very possibly will play for the state title… north will finally get their neutral ice…

  12. Told You So

After this big win, these blogs should be filled with positive stuff about what a terrific deal this is for section 1 hockey. we should all be proud and we are all supporting suffern to smoke shen too.
I dont care who you root for all year, north and suffern now represent our section and we should all hope to see them both in utica.
    congrats to north…keep it up.

  13. bracket man

Nobody has tried this yet. If u want to see a perfectly filled in bracket for the state tourney paste that link in your browser and then predict against a bunch of other people and see if u win like fantasy. SOmeone try it and make sure the link i pasted works, PLEASE!

  14. big fan

is canton as good as they were last year when they beat north?

  15. hmmmm

i predicted. interesting how sombody has picked each team to win it all. i guess its really just up there

  16. bracket man

They have a lot of the same players. And yes they are just as good but im not sure who they lost but i know they still have the main core of their team. Brian Zeller, Darren Camp, Shane Laurie etc. DOnt just skip Lancaster. They come out of tough section 6 that includes top state contender willy north, so take it one step at a time, Lancaster is a great team.

  17. big fan

any real shot at a north suffern final

  18. big fan

    what was the rye/jj score!

  19. suffern fan

told you so.. you are 100% right..north suffern final would be the greatest!!!

  20. haha

i hear 6-1 Rye over Jay

What a bunch of CHOKERS – Number one seed going down so easily… Maybe they should have just let Fox Lane win – at least that would have made it a good game like the nearly even 2-1 regular season game that Fox Lane lost at Rye. John Jay is a cocky, overrated team with advantages such as a 50ish player pool in their upper school system and a coach who is very high up at the brewster rink. Yet, they choke again.

  21. big fan

john jay are a bunch of punks. They all run their mouths and are completely classless

  22. Greying Rye

Wasnt much of a game John Jay did very little

  23. wow

WOW JJ you guys are punks and suck all u do is fight no skill at all…..........enjoy the win Rye u guys deserved it!

  24. sec1

best 10 returning players for each league any takers?

  25. Massena

Congratulations to the WN team. You should be very proud of your team and coaches. They are a well coached team and very much deserved the win. They were class act team in every aspect. I wish them luck the rest of the way.

  26. Massena

One other thing I forgot, I do not believe anyone from Section X doubted the strength of your program. Last years game against Canton was proof that you could play with anyone. There is never a need to apologize for your schedule. It is was it is and you go from there. Again congratulations and good luck in continuing your goal of a state championship.

Hope those people who were on your forum earlier making stupid commnets about Massena can develop the class that their team and coaches displayed.

  27. Massena

Sorry for a few typos in the previous two post. Was just reading so many complaints about how the game on the radio was being done by the CN fans who did not make the trip. That is unbelievable that you were complaining, you were fortunate to be able to hear the game. You could have turned it off. I guess all the classy fans from CN were on the trip North!

  28. Daniel Kiernan

Massena’s got a great rink and a great program with plenty of history. North coach Dave Lynch and others were quick to point that out to me. Everyone’s been very nice here. Now it’s off to Buffalo.

  29. North fan

    Few Questions:

    (1) Anyone know if any North/Massena game photos will be posted on the North Country site or any other site?

    (2) Anyone know if the North/Lancaster game tomorrow night will be on webcast like last night’s game?

  30. North Parent

Thank you, Massena, for your kind comments. As a North parent and speaking for the other North parents, I cannot tell you how AMAZING it was to hear the game last night and to hear your son’s name being announced. No complaints from us – It was a wonderful gift for those of us who couldn’t make the trip. My husband said everyone was so courteous and it was such a great experience for our boys to play at such a rink and against such a great team! They took nothing for granted. Good luck to you all in the future!

  32. mchink6

    Luv that webcast!

C’mon Journal News..it would be a great thing for the JN to also do for high school sports. Great exposure for the sport and the JN..

  33. Massena

You wont find many places that do a all teams games on the radio like Massena does. They do all the home and away games and usually do a great job. The radio station gives a shirt to each teams player of the game. The normal play by play guy was out of town and the man who did it was just filling in. It doesnt look like NCSPN will have pictures on. They were at the Div II final. I do think they have the radio broadcast arcived if anyone did not hear it.

  34. mchink6

Thanks Massena for your good words…you’re a real sportsmen and good hockey fan.

As far as webcasts we don’t need all the games, but it would be great if significant games were broadcast. The CN vs. Suffern venue cannot accomodate all the people who want to see that hockey game. This can be done not just for hockey but for other sports.

I don’t know the logistics involved in this, but I’d guess that webcasts are not huge undertakings. Unfortunately I don’t think radio broadcasts are probable. Many school districs have audio/visual facilities and certainly in conjunction with the Journal News I believe it would be hugely popular.

  35. LoHud Hockey

It may be an issue of bandwith rather than having the proper AV facilities to do it. When you figure in the amount of people who get shut out of the game, the number of people who didn’t even try to go because they knew about the crowds, the casual fans who wouldn’t normally do anything but look up the final score because their team is D2 and didn’t even make the playoffs but they listen out of curiosity, and the upstate people who are trying to get updates on the game and a feel for the players to watch come state tourney time, that’s a lot of people that will tune in. Not sure if the Journal News’ website would be able to handle that, and if you think there are a lot of complaints about petty things in the Suffern/North game now, imagine the complaints if that site crashed 5 minutes into the game.

I have heard that Section 1 is planning on putting together their own website which will have not only current scores, standings, etc., but will also have the history of the section, standings from prior seasons, post season awards, etc. Hopefully it will turn out well, and be up by next season. If it is, maybe they will put in the capability for webcasts like this. If they have enough bandwith to do it, maybe they will allow the schools to broadcast the games thru their site if they want, and have them use their own equipment to do so. Then for the big games, you can even have the option of listening to the home team’s commentators or the visiting team’s.

  36. mchink6

    Good information Lohud Hockey..

If it could be done in Massena, I hope it could be done in Westchester/Rockland?

  37. tourney time

if section put together a comprehensive site, they could definately air a “game of the week” via webcast or podcast. i know a lot of college programs that actually air their games on the internet with video, so it could be done, question is cost. “game of the week” during the season focusing on rivalry games and big games and then the playoffs. would be a nice thing for westchester to have.

  38. LoHud Hockey

Picking one “game of the week” would be tough. If god forbid a Suffern game is chosen as the game of the week more times in the season than a North game, heads would roll.

In all seriousness, though, since every team has different days and times for their home games, it would be tough to single out one game of the week and have it live. It’s not like ESPN Sunday night baseball where they can say “This game is going to be the best this week, so we’ll put that on at 8:00 while all others are played in the afternoon.” One week a Rye/WP game at 5:00 on a Wednesday may be the best game, and the next, it could be Suffern/Mahopac at 7:15 on a Friday.

  39. mchink6

i just have little faith in Section 1 administrators/bureaucrats pulling this off. I’d think a private enterprise like the JN would be more successful and it would not have to be limited to hockey, i.e, rye-harrison football, section championship games, etc. The northcountry site I listened to last night looked like a “privately” run website, not an official Section X website. If I’m wrong congratulations to Section X adminstrators on a great and professional looking website.

  40. North fan

I think a Section 1 website with current information, prior season/historical information woudl be awseme… Journal News does a decent job of tracking Section 1 sports, but to have a website like Section 10’s Northcountrysports.net, would be fantastic

  41. mchink6

Lohud…sometimes the game of the week is rather obvious. Now last night I would have expected the Rye-JJ game to be “broadcast” being a championship game and all. As important as CN-Massena was it’s an outbracket game. Editors are paid to make these decisions all the time.

  42. $$

And then they will sell advertising spots, which in turn will force the game of the week to be put on by a larger market share….oh sorry, got carried away. Should be a great thing. Actually channel 78 on cablevision randomly plays replays of high school sports-I’v seen softball, hockey and baseball-why not do some live.

  43. itsabreeze

Any one can broadcast a game. New YORK STATE INTERSCHOLASTIC BROADCAST NETWORK. for as little as $49.00 all you need is a laptop and mic. great site you can do video to. I hope someone out there is a wantabe sports broadcaster and will do the North /Lancaster game

  44. giants hater

Public acess use to show the high school games I don’t know
    if they do it anymore.

First of all I just want to say whats happening with
upstate teams in the beginning of the year Suffern beat
Skaenatles and last night ClarksTown North manhandled
Massena have they just been playing sloppy was this Massena
or Nyack? I don’t mean to be rude to anybody but Skaenatles
and Massena are not cicero or cazenova. Obviously that was
not the same team that beat Ogdenseburg 9-2. when I was in
High school the upstate teams always beat us.

I do want to congradulate Clarkstown North Did any of the
    parents go to the game?

When I was in High school time period 1985 Did Canton have
    a team?

I will have to say that the sports reporting of this game has been sloppy channel 12 news shows highlights of the
Rye game and some local basketball nothing of this game just the score. the Journal news has
a small paragraph. when I was in High school they had
a pretty big article Mounties ready for state tourniment.
that was the caption. It was 2 articles 1 before the game
and pictures and a big article after the game Also I take
in consideration that game was played at Sport O rama that
was 85 and 86 this was up in Massena but it’s 2007 we could
have better coverage. Let’s not act like they just beat
christian brothers of Albany , Mohansen , Burnt hills,
Nisayuna, They beat a powerful team Massena. We could have
pictures of Matt and Josh plus a big article.

  45. itsabreeze

The schools should do this and make it part of class project. If a school wants to broadcast any sporting event they can (not just hockey). And if they were smart they would charge a fee to log on. Think how many friends and faimily of kids playing a sport that live out of the area would want to listen $$$$$$$$$$$$$

  46. itsabreeze

    giants hater

Anyone can broadcast go to that site i listed above and see for yourself how easy it is.

  47. Massena

They is very High fee you need to pay the NYSPHSAA to broadcast any playoff game.

  48. itsabreeze

How much????? and even if its via the internet only, not airwaves??? and can the host school do it free????? come on massena we just want to hear the game
