Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley with Harold Gutmann

Rye 6, John Jay 1

February
27

It’s true — just called the office and found out. I like both of these teams, so even though I’m thrilled Rye justified the hype I threw at them this season, I’m disappointed for John Jay. I don’t know anything but the score, but I have to think Matt Donahue had a heck of a game in goal for Rye, especially with the way Rodeschini and Latino were playing for John Jay in the Fox Lane game.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to book a room in Buffalo for the next Clarkstown North game.

  20. Rye Tea

    Big fan and fan1,
CRY ME A RIVER YOU LOSERS. Just because your team is done for the season and you have no life doesn’t mean you have the right to take away from what RYE did tonight. You guys aren’t fit to carry any of the RYE players’ jocks.

  21. Rye 3

Big fan.. if you are such a “BIG FAN” then you would realize its a team effort… myself James Geoghegan, and marshall shut down the best two players on JJ #14 and #9 so yes i can talk. 26. Rye Section Champs

Big fan I forgot the score of the North/ Mamaroneck game could you refresh my memory? Then there was Rye’s win over Mamaroneck in their own tournament. Also, Scarsdale was 1-13 in league 1 and Rye tied or beat 4 of the five league one teams we played, not to mention beating John Jay 6-1 whom Scarsdale lost to twice.

  27. Rye 3

LEAGUE ONE GOT NOTHING ON MEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. Jordan Levantanse

forget Big fan, we obviously shut him up. and he obviously wasnt at this game

    HOLLER

GREAT GAME RYE BOYS and i must add that JJ was classy in thier loss they played well and didnt go out as sore losers they went out with thier heads up high and they deserve recognition for it.

  34. jizz bomb

props to JJ for there class, that is one thing Rye takes pride in. Rye came out with three lines and just steam rolled all night. Train keeps going north to Salom River. Yea Boyzzzzz

  37. Rye 3

” This feeling is better than sex.” T

  38. Bad Choice

    Dan,
I can’t believe you went upstate to see North’s OUTBRACKET game instead of covering the local D2 Section Championship. Very disappointed… the site says your the lower hudson valley ice hockey reporter yet you miss a championship game to watch north after they already lost

  39. Maxine Nightingale

This is Maxine herself and i would just like to congradulate Rye on a terrific scalping of the Indians. Ill be cheering you on up in Section 10 and you all have free tickets to my next show.

  40. Rams Hockey

this is the most pointless chain of comments i have ever read…players are giving themselves credit cause they werent mentioned and others are acting like 5 year olds…we got the point half way down the page, rye is better than ppl think…congrats on winning, but u shouldnt go challenging any team you want or think u can handle now that the season isover and u know u will not be able to play them

  41. Daniel Kiernan

Believe me, I would have preferred it if someone else from the Journal News came up here to Massena for this game and I got to do the section championship game at Brewster tonight. Apparently I’m the only idiot who travels this far.

  42. Jordan Levantanse

Rams Hockey how can u be upset by our happiness, we just proved everybody wrong including the 5 or so people who predicted a JJ win over us, clearly we are happy, and have the right to show that on this blog

  43. Homers

what happened? how is that possible. was the game ever close?

  44. YPelicans?

I had intended to post congrats to Rye for winning last night, but what a bunch of morons on this blog! Have some class and act like you’ve been there before.

  45. Champs

All you naysayers, just take your bitterness over not being there yourself and go somewhere else. Stop trying to rain on Rye’s parade. They won decisively, it wasn’t even close and they are just enjoying their victory. Considering the way some teams behaved this season, they have no business talking about what is or isn’t a classy celebration.

  46. greying Rye

Was John Jay missing the travel big guns last night? If they were it makes sense if they weren`t missing them then I`m surprised they didnt do more offensively. Congrats to Rye, I was out of town and missed it

  47. hockey10580

    Greying Rye,
John Jay had ALL of their guns. Rye was dominant. The JJ big line had no points last night.

  48. greying Rye

wow, surprising maybe the travel thing is not that big of a factor as some may think.

  49. But

But, all those JJ players will find their way onto the Empire team

  50. allbiz

sooner or later people will wake up. Travel hockey is fun, and its good for the kids who really love the game. Just last week there was an article on a player Shattenkirk who is doing amazing things. He is one in a million. Reality checks are important.

  51. O!

    marsh eats children

  52. reality

To get to the next level your family most likely has to have alot of money…First off you need to be great. Make your varsity team in 9th or 10th grade. Put up huge numbers (like Matt Willows)..Play no other sport (there is no time) then be willing to move away from your home when you are 15 or 16 and live with a host family (like Foster did)...delay the start of your education for at least 2 years to play Juniors (not junior C or B but REAL JUNIORS) so you will be like 20 or 21 when you are a college freshman….sacrifice your teenage and high school years with your family and friends. If you do all of this then you have a slight chance of playing Division 3 hockey where you will still have to pay to go to school. Now if you are a top junior player then maybe division 1 which offers 18 scholorships per team. Reminder that you are also competing with every Canadien kid for a college slot.ADVICE…..STAY in school and play HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY

  53. Starship trooper

    Well said Reality. Well said.

  54. College Hockey

Look up any college hockey roster and look at the ages of the players and their last team and where they are from. 99.9 % are over 23 years old, played in a major junior league and are NOT from the United States. I agree. PLAY HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY

  55. Junior C

Junior C is just a money maker

  56. HSHOCKEYFAN

Actually, Junior C gives the boys a chance to play competitive hockey without giving up their education or life. It is better comp than HS and can be played concurrently. Usually has better coaching too.

  57. Junior C

The kids who play Junior C concurrently with high school for the most part are all burned out and give a half hearted effort on their high school teams. It’s their parents who want their kids to play not the kids. Reality sets in and by the kids junior or senior year they refuse to do it and end up being much better on their high school team and enjoy the whole atmosphere of high school hockey..

  58. juniors

Big issue here is are these really “junior” teams? it seems watered down. Are they glorified midget teams for money making purposes? Is the player or parent getting sold a “bill of goods” are “some” programs feeding people things they want to hear such as false hopes. Do parents/players hear or believe only what they want to hear? Do programs explain the odds of a “scholarship” or D-1 or even D-3 stardom are longer than the odds for powerball? Do the “junior” programs players dominate the CHSL and Public and Prep school leagues? Players juniors is still playing hockey, and its fun and kids love to play, but you hope the expectations do not exceed reality and sway kids to chase the impossible dream.

  59. better comp??

    HSHOCKEYFAN

better comp than HS?? very debatable. If thats true then the Junior C guys should be destroying the leagues and they are not. Better coaching? debatable as well. I am sure there are good coaching at both areas, I wouldnt say one is better than the other

  60. omg

best junior league in the US is the USHL

  61. tourney time

if you dont play for the apple core you are wasting your time and money. They are the best and ONLY way to the college ranks from the metropolitan area. Apple core can play with any USHL team.

  62. Junior C

Look at the Junior C rosters for Brewster. Most of the kids are just average to below average players on their high school teams and most come from wealthy families. You can’t skate 6 to 7 days a week sometimes more than once a day at the high school level and have your legs. The body needs time to rest and recuperate. The player is short changing both his teams and that’s not fair to anyone.

  63. tourney time

if you dont play for the apple core you are wasting your time and money. They are the best and ONLY way to the college ranks from the metropolitan area.

  64. ITALIAN STALLION

REALITY, COLLEGE HOCKEY, JUNIOR C, JUNIORS, BETTER COMP? OMG

I SALUTE ALL OF YOU FOR AT LAST THERE ARE PEOPLE ON HERE WHO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON. I WON’T SAY NOBODY WILL EVER PLAY D1 BUT MOST OF THESE KIDS AND THEIR PARENTS ARE SO DELUSIONAL AND YES IT IS THE PARENTS WHO ARE WORSE OFF WITH THIS. YOU ALL HIT THE NAIL RIGHT ON THE HEAD AND COVERED EVERY ASPECT. AND TO SEE A COMMENT LIKE “ITS BETTERCOMP THAN HS” IS MISLEADING. I WAS AT THE GAME LAST NIGHT AND SAW THESE HIGH LEVEL “TRAVEL PLAYERS” FAIL TO EVEN SCORE A POINT FOR THEIR TEAM IN A LOSING EFFORT FOR THE HS TEAM. AND THEY ARE NOT ALONE AS THIS HAPPENS A LOT. EVEN D3 SCHOOLS ARE GETTING HARDER TO MAKE. WANT TO PLAY JUNIORS LIKE IT WAS MENTIONED; GO FIND A REAL JUNIOR TEAM, NOT JUST TEAMS THAT USE THE LABEL TO SELL A PRODUCT.

  65. Buffalo

oh Dan oh Dan where are you now? Please check in. Hope you have your scarf with you it’s cold up there.

  66. Judge and Jury

Salmon River now will host Rye of Section I Saturday at 6:30 p.m. with the winner moving on to the Div. II Final Four the following weekend. Rye advanced by beating John Jay, 6-1, Tuesday

  67. lets play

Tourney time is sort of right, across the bridge is the New Jersey hitmen. They are in the same league as Apple Core, the Eastern Junior Hockey league. The “EJ” is considered to be Junior A – Tier III. The only leagues ahead of the EJ in the US are the USHL – Jr. A – Tier I, and the NAHL – Jr. A – Tier II. There are several players from Westchester on both teams. Players from the EJ are regularly drafted into the NHL and also go to D-1, D-III, and club. As someone very familiar with all levels of hockey, no one is going into college without playing junior hockey or prep school hockey first. They are just not string enough or developed enough.

  68. tourney time

when i said the apple core were the only way to “the promised land” of college hockey, i was being serious, but it is not impossible. many westchester area players have moved on to the d-1 ranks, but they did not do it from HS. they went to the apple core for 2 years or played at prep school for a year and then went to the apple core or went to the USHL like Foster did. Local dreamers should know that we have sent many players to the d-1 level and NONE of them put up the numbers that Willows, Gitler, Bloom, etc put up…maybe the competition is not as good, that is for another day. but a quick list of d-1 alumni would include Eric Thomassian BU (Rye) John Foster Denver (Suffern) CJ Tozo Niagara (NEw Ro) Jack Devaney Quinipiac (Mamaroneck) Erik Nates Iona (WP, Apple Core) Taylor Leahy BC (Mamaroneck) Eric Eaton Bowling Green (Mamaroneck)....might be more, i just dont know. point is all of them played juniors and none were 18 year old college freshman. my advice to the “stars” of section 1…play 4 years with your friends, win a sectional title you can remember, then go try your luck with juniors. forget prep school its only 25 games…juniors you will get 75. And how many of those guys ever made a penny playing afterwards?

  69. AND

Tozzo transferred out of Niagra (D-1) to Plattsburg State (D-3)because he never played. Devaney never dressed at Quinnipiac, and Leahy never dressed at BC. More reality.

  70. mchink6

If you can get a free ride at a prestigious prep school, well thats not to shabby. No guaruntee of superstar success in life and/or hockey but not a bad head start.

  71. tourney time

    Mchink6,

I agree, it is a great opportunity, but prep school is no longer a guarantee that college will be the next step in one’s hockey career. most players need to play juniors. there are some guys that make the jump, but they are few and far between.

  72. mchink6

Last success story I remember from here is the “Squires” kid from White Plains. If I recall he played one year at WP, as an 8th grader I think, and moved onto the NTDP. Can anybody provide an update?

  73. Squires Update

Squires is playing for the Indiana Ice in the USHL and I know he is generating HockeyEast interest from Merrimack among others. He had interest from BU coming out of the NTDP, but sometimes things just don’t work out.

  74. Squires Update

Also, he played his freshman year at WP then moved on to Brunswick for a season, then made the NTDP.

  75. hs hockey

playing high school hockey is not only about the competition, it is about the camraderie and pride playing for your school. by playing travel hockey exclusively you lose that sepcial importance for playing in the name of a school, which travel hockey does not have. since after going through the travel system, the kids will most likely have less fun, miss their teenage lives, and the sense of teamwork that comes from playing high school

  76. fox lane

    Pelham Kid –

I couldn’t agree with you more about John Jay . . . They are a bunch of cocky chokers – we should show them what high school hockey and rivalry are really about – like double overtime sectional games, two titles for each of us in 5 years, intense competition, respect, and your crowd chanting “we want fox lane” a few years back when scarsedale played you for the title as they beat us in the semis…

What do you say we forget about this year and both find our ways back to the sectional game next year so we can show those classless Jay whiners what high school hockey really means

  77. New Topic

Which hockey program is hated the most…...Name your teams…..........................???????

Looks like John Jay is in the Lead! But Why?????? They really had a terrible season this year!

  78. Congrat's to Rye

Great victory Rye. Have noticed alot of praise from all of you to one another. You had a very nice season and hope you do well in the states.

    Rye’s MVP: Donahue
    Rye’s Mr. Clutch PLayer: Iobbi
    Rye’s Major Force Player: Rogers
    Rye’s Most Transparent Player: Eck

  79. ITALIAN STALLION

    Fox Lane

good idea…...... lets play at the Icehutch next February; those finals were classics, two outstanding coaches.

  80. Hated Team

I’m not gonna lie, i think some of the kids on fox lane are classles crybaby punks and have always hated their team

On the other hand I have no problem with john jay and think they lost respectfully and with class last night

  81. yea you would . . .

yeayou would considering you’re on the team tough guy

  82. no acore.

i just want to let tourny time know that playing for long beach applecore isnt the best way to go. if you look at the standings brewster bulldogs junior b are tied with them in junior b empire league, junior c applecore team is horrible. their junior a team might just make playoffs. theres alot of junior hockey out there other than applecore that will get you somewhere. look at mckiernan, who playes for the hitmen in jersey. i agree with you tho that junior hockey or prep school is the only way to go if you wanna play college hockey.

  83. transparent?

Congrats Rye – please explain what transparent means as a hockey player and how eck applies to the defintion

  84. transparent

Transparent means that you used tos it down, and now you stand up. Jordan eck was the only player who could have gotten this award.

  85. yea yea i would?

haha too bad im actually not on the team “tough guy” i was on the other side of the ice celebrating while they were holding their heads high with class

  86. that guy

alright first of all. you cannot even compare the speed, intensity, and skill level of juniors to high school. its not even close. junior hockey is faster, better hockey and you play way better competition and have better chances of furthering your career to a higher junior team or prep school. and also just looking at junior players stats on journal news.com does not show you how good a player is. you have to watch a game and see his ability and how he helps the team which does not necessarily have to do with points. anyone who bases their opinion of a player on his high school stats on journal news is a fickle fan and knows slim to none about real hockey. maybe they know public high school hockey but not real hockey.

  87. Jordan

hey guys, i dont deserve the transparent award. I still sit down, and I’m not see-through.

  88. redstone

Congratulations to Rye. You all deserve some sort of award for the team effort in the Finals. John Jay should be commended for playing a hard, clean game. They should be one of the D II favorites for next season. But, for the Garnets, you earned your upstate bus trip (it has been a while). Enjoy the ride. Also, good luck to the other 2 Section 1 survivors, North and Suffern. Keep it going. Lets all meet in Utica next weekend!!!

  89. Gender selection

Nice ad on this website? I’ll have one hockey player and one tap dancer please. Give me a break.

  90. tourney time

I was only referring to apple core Junior A team. They made the EJHL what it is now. They send kids D-1 every year, that’s all. There may be other good programs around, they are the best. The junior b,c teams are just midgets under a nicer name.

  91. Good luck Rye

I am a JJ parent and I would like to congratulate Rye and wish them the best of luck in Salmon River tomorrow. It just wasn’t our night and you guys earned the victory. Played very good team hockey. Particulary defense.

Keep it up and do section 1 proud up there.
