Rye joins Suffern in Utica

March
7

Rye was clearly the better team tonight against Salmon River.  Shamrocks coach William Plante noted that his program is in a down year, but he didn’t harp on it.  He gave the Garnets plenty of credit.

In the story I think I said this group of Rye players and their coach had never won a section championship prior to this season. Now that I think of it, I don’t think they had ever appeared in a section championship game prior to this season.

I left something out of the story that was pretty interesting.  Somebody mentioned it in a comment on the LIVE post.  There was a point when it seemed Salmon River had scored a goal in the second period.  It looked like Donahue’s water bottle popped up off the net.  The crowd went wild and a bunch of players stopped playing for a second, but there was no whistle.  Then all of a sudden somebody was taking another shot on Donahue and play resumed.  No goal.  After the game I had completely forgotten about it, and nobody on Salmon River’s side mentioned it.  It did happen, though.  I personally don’t know what happened because I forgot to ask.  There was so much else to talk about with everybody.

There’s usually something going on besides the game that catches my eye at these events.  Most of the time I don’t mention it.  In this case, I just have to.  There was a backup goalie on Salmon River who was pretty much the antithesis of sportsmanship.  He spent the whole pre-game warmup skating back and forth on the red line smirking at the Rye players and saying things that I can’t imagine were words of encouragement.  Then, in the post game handshake, he had his blocker on and his stick in his hand, and he just skated past everyone without acknowledging them.  Class act.

Other than that, the whole experience up here was great.  Plante is a great guy.  The rink is astounding.  It has bleachers along one side of the ice, and an enclosed seating area above the concession stand at one end.  It has an enclosed press box (heated) that comfortably accomodated three guys doing radio and myself, with phone lines and wireless internet. And the whole thing is actually AT the high school.

Rye now has Monroe-Woodbury standing in their way, of course, in the state semifinal. That’s a tall order. I’ll be there. So should you. It’s a lot closer than Fort Covington or Massena or Canton or Buffalo. And it’s on a weekend. There’s no excuse to miss it.

Hey Dan let me know if you want to go up together..

  5. MW D2?

Congrats to Rye. And Boo to Monroe Woodbury for perpetrating a fraud as a D2 School. Monroe Woodbury plays New Rochelle in football based on size. The fact that the state allows MW to play in D2 is a Joke, and makes the whole playoff system a joke. MW was in the championship last year in D2 and when it came time to choose to go up this year, they chose to stay in D2. When will the state authorities do something about this? Hockey is the only sport where the different state sections have different rules. In Section 1, a school like New Rochelle could not opt to go D2, even though they are on a D2 skill. Each section should be governed over the same rules. And I don’t want to hear that MW is the only D1 sized school in section 9, tough crap, you gotta play D1.

  6. Redrock

The Garnets won’t dwell on this “MW shoudn’t be there” theme.

They are the next opponent and a very formidable one. Rye lost to MW 5-1 over the holiday break in the Mamaroneck tourney final. But the Garnets were missing key players for that game and, more importantly, have really gelled the second half of this season. Roll 3 forward lines and 5 D. Strong goaltending. Basically a D2 version of Suffern. Both Section 1 champions rely on their goaltender (Donohue for Rye and Natoli for Suffern)to make all the routine stops and then some spectacular ones. Both teams have a bunch of fast D men who can move the puck, with at least one on each team being a real difference maker- Rye’s Marshall Rogers compares favorably to Suffern’s Chris Wynne. Both Section 1 State Frozen Four participants run 3 forward lines and have their go to guys up there (Eck and Iobbi for Rye don’t quite score at the proficiency of Salt, Clark and Ruthburg, but they get it done for the Garnets). Suffern did handle an injury depleted Garnet squad at SOR earlier in the season, though. I expect a very good game Saturday AM in Utica. Go Garnets.

  7. ...

it is just amazing that a league 2 team is making it all the way to the state semifinals… divisions are done by school size, not talent

  8. Redrock

    ...

I wouldn’t make too much of the League 1/League 2 distinction in Section 1 this year. I think, on any given day during this season, any of the League 2 teams (plus league 3’s Ossining) could compete on an even plane with all but the top two league 1 teams. And, on a good day for the top League 2 teams, those teams could compete with Suffern and North.

  9. Section1Fan

MW’s team is loaded with underclassmen. They definitely should move up to tier 1 next year with all their skaters coming back. But hey will probably pull an Ossining or White Plains!

  10. Sick!

I’m sick! It should of been Ossining in the Semi’s not Rye. That call against Guilmette still SUCKS! Homer CAll!!

  11. Rye 20

    ryerock and …
good points, i think it is very true that the leagues are kinda bs, the very top league 2 teams can play with suffern or north, while we did lose to suffern in the beginning of the year it was the first game back from injury for 5 of our players, still good luck to Rye and Suffern in Utica and now upstate teams should come down to section 1 to play better competition

  12. Rye 20

    “sick”
are you kidding me? if was a legit call, refs are a part of the game and you were CLEARLY the worse team! stop whining!

  13. ...

those are all good points but I don’t understand “Section1Fan”’s thinking that MW move up to “tier 1” i guess their section decides what division they are in, based on school size not talent

  14. hello

In Section 9, thte schools decide what division they will play in. They are a AA size school. They will beat Rye and make it to the championship game no problem because of that.

  15. Pooh

I saw the MW Rye game. MW was all over Rye and intimidated them early and took a 3-0 lead in the first and coasted the rest of the way. The 5-1 score made it seem closer than what it was. Rye has no shot. MW also has an excellent goalie, and talent everywhere. Much much deeper, and play a much much more physical game. I hope Rye does well, but my money is on MW.

  16. Pooh

By the way, I agree that MW should not be in D2. They are the size of North Rockland High School or bigger.

  17. s10580

    Any radio/webcast of MW-Rye?

  18. Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

Hey Sick, Maybe if the kid shut his mouth, things could have been different.

  19. sec1sprtsfan

Folks—-defense and goaltending win hockey games. Let’s stop for a second to recap what Rye has accomplished in this playoff run. In Section 1 tourney, held the Ossining stars and the Jay stars to ONE point between the four of them in those two games. Now they added a shutout to get to Utica. Wow!!! Yes, there will be more depth up there than we have down here, but I’d expect some well played close games and on any given day…...

  20. Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

The Monroe-Woodbury vs. Rye game will be a true Davey verse Goliath contest.

  21. Education Prep

Go Rye (who I assume is the “Davey” in this case). But don’t underestimate them. Donahue can carry his team. All they need is one goal and they have a shot at winning.

  22. Hope!

Hope Rye wins but I’ve seen MW play. They are TOUGH! Rye needs Donahue to play the game of his life!!!!!

  23. LoHud Hockey

I think you meant David & Goliath, not Davey & Goliath. Davey and Goliath is that religious claymation show about the kid (Davey) and his dog (Goliath). That show is difficult to watch.

  24. love it!!!

love davey and goliath.. don’t you remember when the cotter pin fell out of the wheel during the soap box derby race.. or when he fell through the ice.. great show..
ps.. I have no doubt schelling will have these guys ready for the weekend..

  25. suffern fan

didn’t suffern crush Rye this year? they must have improved a lot since then..

  26. 5-1

    Suffern won 5-1

but it wasnt even that close.
scored 9 seconds into the game.
3-0 after 1..then just stopped playin

doesnt matter! Suffern and Rye need to support one another this weekend!

    GO SEC 1!

  27. LoHud Hockey

Rye did improve a lot as the season went on. I’m not saying it was the Suffern game that did it, but up to and including the Suffern game, they were 6-5-2 on the season. After that loss, they were 9-2-2.

  28. BOOM!

    BOOM!
    HERE COMES THE
    BOOM!
    READY OR NOT?
HERE COMES THE BOYS FROM THE SOUTH

    LETS GO SUFFERN!

Iles, I will make your life a living he(( on saturday at the Aud! You will cry like the 14 year old boy you are! Better bring ear plugs buddy…

  29. Junior high school

So here’s an interesting question…....M-W has 3 players who also play Jr B for Brewster and 2 players on the Brewster Jr C team. Both are in playoff weekends…..Jr B’s vs Applecore at home, the Jr C’s are in Pittsburgh…...... Anyone know if the M-W kids are in Utica or playing Jrs this weekend??????

  30. Redrock

I wouldn’t say Suffern “crushed” Rye mid season. The Garnets were playing very shorthanded. Just trying to get some injured players back on the ice. Suffern did score very early (on probably the last soft goal Donohue has allowed this season). It was 3-0 after 1. But, after an even 2nd period, Rye came back and scored early in the third to make it 3-1. Shortly after the Rye goal, Natoli made a super save (looked like the puck crossed the line, but he sprawled, clamped down and kept it out)to keep it a 2 goal game. The Mounties scored the final 2 goals in the last few minutes to ice the game. Suffern outshot Rye 26 to 25. No one is saying Rye would be favored in a rematch with Suffern. Just noting that the two teams play a similar style that has been successfull for both. Go Section 1!!!

  31. Rye25

How do the other 2 teams playing in the D2 semifinals compare to Rye or MW. I forget their names and i havent heard anything about them.

  32. Redrock

Here is the skinny from a quick web search of the 4 D2 teams heading to Utica:

MW- ranked #1 in state- Only losss was to C North at North’s tourney. They have the complete game.

Queensbury- from the Lake George area- ranked #2 in state-scores a lot, but not as stingy as other teams in the bracket. Knocked off 2 time defending champs Clinton in the quarters.

Canandaigua- from the Finger Lakes region between Rochester and Syracuse. Only allowed 17 goals in 12 league games. And then none so far in the playoffs. Don’t score that many goals, though.

Rye- currently ranked #6 in state. Not quite as stingy as Canandaigua (Donohue has allowed 4 goals in his 4 playoff games), but score more on a par with Queensbury (17 goals scored in 4 playoff games). A balanced team that can protect a lead and also close a deficit, if necessary.

  33. golden eagle

    Junior High School

M-W has 2 players on the Jr B not 3 and the Junior C Brewster team did not made the playoffs so the JR C kids definetly play for HS. The Brewster team that is playing in Pittsburgh is the development team, which is the midget team. There are no M-W players on this team.

  34. sec1 fan

Section 1 D2 has really shown itself well the past two years. This year with Rye and last year with Pelham.

  35. Junior high school

Golden eagle – thanks, my bad…...always get the Jr C and MAD teams mixed up….... do you know if the Jr B kids are going to Utica or playing vs. AppleCore?

p.s. Brewster roster lists 3 kids from Monroe, assumed they would all attend M-W, but perhaps not…...

  36. just a fan

Iona and suffern are the two teams to beat next year. That should be there first game of the year.

  37. MW Kids

Might be on Brewster’s Jr B team…......But barely play! There are times they get three shifts a game (60 minute games). They are 3rd/4th liners….

  38. golden eagle

    junior high school

Brewster B does have 3 from Monroe but 1 player graduated last year from HS.

  39. golden eagle

    MW kids
    To clarify your comment

Brewster B plays 4 lines most of the time and always 3 lines. Depending on the game and situation, 4th line does get skipped over however it is not all the time. The games are 60 minutes at a high tempo – you can’t possibly play less than 3 lines and have any legs left for the 3rd period. It won’t work.

  40. Queensbury

I think Pelham beat Queensbury in the Glens Falls Shootout in January

  41. Smell the Roses

    To golden eagle,

If you’re familiar with the Brewster team, then you would know that the MW kids barely played!

  42. sec1 fan

Yes you are right, Pelham beat Queensbury.

  43. good game

rye was without eck the first time they played MW and rogers had not been moved to defense yet. besides that rye has been rolling lately and playing excellent D, expect a closer game

  44. LeMaire

I don’t want to be a nay-sayer. But I saw the MW-Rye game. It was not close. MW pounded on rye in the first period to make it 3-0, and then just rolled around because they did not want to act classless in the Mamk tournament and run up the score, they actually were looking forward to playing a then undefeated (or 1 loss) Mamaroroneck who could not get past Rye. IT was never a game, and it was never close, and MW dominated in all aspects. Rye will not win, but if they keep it close, it will be a moral victory.

  45. Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

    Hey Just a Fan
Suffern will be the best public school team, and Iona the best CHSHL team. But Iona will not be one of the best teams. Next year Mamaroneck, Mahopac, Clarkstown North, John Jay and Pelham will all be better than Iona. I doubt Suffern will waste one of their 24 games on Iona. They should play Monroe-Woodbury and the like. My opinion is that Iona would be a league 2 team if they were a section 1 team.

  46. rankings

    http://www.newyorksportswriters.org/reference/current_polls_hockey_070307.shtml

updated rankings.. pretty much what was expected..

  47. Greying Priest

I wish my kid could play juniors and I could pay the % or 6 thousand per season…...If your playing juniors do yourselves and your parents a favor and go to college chances are none of you will go any futher then that level!!!!

  48. Exciting Year Ahead!

Hey Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil,

Don’t think you know what you’re talking about when You say Iona isn’t on the same level as the other section 1 teams that you mentioned above.

The Iona team will be loaded up next year. Losing very little thru Graduation and have a few freshmen and sophomores moving up that will complement this years team. They have 9 of their top scorers returning with possibly one of the best defensive and goalies in the County also returning. It should be an interesting year..for this team!

Iona will be a fun team to watch next year. They may not win all their games but with the talent they have, they will be in every game. AND be very competitive with any Section 1 team.
