We’re off to Utica

March
8

Suffern will be playing Ithaca in the Division 1 game.  I saw some of Ithaca’s section championship game against Liverpool on TV when I was up in Massena.  They have that kind of thing on TV up there.  Anyway, Ithaca plays a similar style to Suffern’s.  They also have a freshman goalie who gets a lot of buzz.  I think we’re looking at a low-scoring game.  The Little Red certainly didn’t look like they’re in a different league than the Mounties, figuratively speaking.  I’m not trying to put them down when I say they didn’t look all that impressive.  Suffern doesn’t either.  They’re just two very efficient teams.

Rye will take on Monroe-Woodbury in the Division 2 game for the second time this season.  After upsetting Mamaroneck in a shootout in the first round of the Tigers’ tournament in late December, the Garnets fell behind early to the Crusaders in the final and lost 5-1.  It’s safe to say we will be seeing a different game in Utica, but not necessarily a different winner.  Monroe-Woodbury is ranked No. 1 in the state in Division 2, as they have been for most of the season.  Even if the Garnets have tightened up their defense, sharpened all three lines, improved their stamina, etc., they’ve still got to beat a school more than four times the size of their own.

Suffern coach Rob Schelling mentioned the rink in Utica is pretty warm, so that’s one positive for Rye.  It will be just like home.

Even though it should only be about a three hour trip, I’ve got to leave the day before and stay over because of this 10 a.m. start for the Rye game.  Suffern will be at 5:45.  It should be a pretty full day.

Have Fun sight-seeing in Utica. It is just beautiful up there this time of year.

  3. rankings

updated rankings.. pretty much what was expected..

  4. Redrock

Will local Section 1 fans at home be able to listen to the games? How would they access that broadcast?

  5. suffern fan

redrock.. take a drive up and make a day of it.. only 3 hours.. only down side if suffern or rye make it to the finals i don’t think there are many rooms to stay until sunday..

  6. suffern fan

Dan, are you saying “suffern doesn’t look that impressive either.” I think they were very impressive in the wins against CN and Shen..

  7. no..

I think dan was saying.. suffern doesn’t think they look that impressive either..

  8. Daniel Kiernan

I’m saying looks can be deceiving. Neither Ithaca nor Suffern LOOKS that good most of the time, because they’re so under control.

  9. Daniel Kiernan

Yeah, sorry to confuse everyone with that. I was just thinking out loud…or thinking on the keyboard…

  10. Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

I am glad the state officials are on top of that situation. The situation being that AA sizes schools are in D2…Just plain dumb. Show me one other sport that MW is less than a AA school. You can’t. Who is running this thing? And what is the rationale for letting teams choose thier divisions? Dan maybe you can find this out.

  11. suffern fan

I would agree with you Dan.. suffern doesn’t play the same game as say a CN. Not a lot of flash and dash.. but to a person who really knows the team and the game of hockey.. they are very impressive.

    “Real Deal,”
Section 9 seems to be a throwback in the way they handle the divisions. I think it’s still pretty loosely regulated wherever you go. Section 1 doesn’t have a particular enrollment number that designates whether a school is D1 or D2. They list the teams from biggest to smallest and make a cut in the middle so they have 15 teams in each division. So if East Ramapo came back and a few of the smaller teams folded or combined into bigger teams, we might see a team like Yorktown or Mamaroneck playing D2. It’s all pretty random. That being said, there’s still no way a school like New Rochelle would ever be D2 in our system.

  13. mchink6

I’ll repeat. Let MW play Division 1 in Section 1. This way they can play in a league with schools more there size and more importantly at there hockey skill level.

I understand why they play Div 2, since all the section 9 schools are D2, but there program would benefit more if they played D1 and there titles would be more meaningful.

Right now they are the biggest fish in the small school pond.

  14. to Dan

bottom line. Monroe used to be D-1. Got their brains beat in by Suffern in regionals year in and year out. Then convienently moved DOWN to D-2.
Section 1 went through that too when only Suffern was D-1 and all others were D-2. Then White Plains joined D-1. Then sanity prevailed.

  15. predictions

lets here some predictions for tomorrow and sunday..

    suffern over ithica
    willy north over canton

willy north over suffern in final

    D2.
    mw over rye
    queens over canan

    mw over queens in fial

  16. Mel Bridgeman

Suffern is not the best team, but they MIGHT have the best goalie, and if you have the best goalie, you have a shot at the state championship.
Rye will not get past MW.

  17. sec1fan

Why isnt there a state regulated enrollment for D1 and d2 like there are in most other sports?

  18. Mountie Fan

Anyone who has seen Natoli play over the last two years, and seen the kind of defense Suffern has played over the last 19 games, would probably say that NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE WITH THIS TEAM.

    GOOD LUCK SUFFERN!

  19. Prediction

Goal scored by defense and Suffern finally scores on an empty net

  26. Mountie 'em!

    Suffern 5-1

  27. Mahopac Guy

Suffern all the way. Class act and they have the best goalie. (damn kid shut us down 3x)!!! Go Tommy. Good luck.

  28. giants hater

Even though I went to Suffern Im rooting for Suffern.
We never beat this team including back in 85 when
we demolished all of section 1 and even if Yorktown and
Pelham had a team we would have won by at least 8 goals
we lost to Ithaca 4-2 the following year without
Glen stevens 3-0 I don’t see anything changing. Im hoping
Suffern wins But I want to be realistic
im gonna say Ithaca 5 Suffern 3. Im hoping im wrong
I was wrong in the Clarkstown North Massena game maybee I
    will be wrong again.

when 1 team plays another and they consantly beat them
even if that team gets to be better than the other
they still loose. you see it pro football , baseball ,
    hockey and basketball.

im going to say Canton 6-3 over williamsville.
    Monroe 5-2 over Rye.

the other teams im not familiar with.

  29. Let the Crying begin

    Dan
no way will Ytown or Mnack ever move down to D2 or L2. no way, no how.
