Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley with Harold Gutmann

Ithaca 1, Suffern 0 after four overtimes and a shootout

March
10

I can’t even begin to comment on this game right now because I’m exhausted. It’s going to be obvious when you read the story in the paper tomorrow that it was written as the game was being played. I’m really glad I used that method or there would be some very angry editors over at the Journal News right now. It’s hard to make deadline when it goes to four overtimes and a shootout.

I think this was the first shootout in the history of the state final four, actually. I didn’t put that in the story because I couldn’t really confirm it in time. It seems very likely, though.

I hope everyone was checking the home page of the Journal News for updates during the game. I was calling the office between periods and giving quick updates since I had no access to the internet over at Utica Auditorium.

Anyway, the hockey season is over for me. Now I just work on the all-star issues and prep for the spring season. I’ll be shutting down the blog pretty soon. I’m considering using my final High (school) Sticking post to give out mock awards called the Stickies. But I don’t really have enough good categories in mind. Let me know if you have any ideas. Clean ones.

I’ll be checking in sometime tomorrow to comment on both of these games. Like I said, I’m exhausted, both in the short term and long term sense of the word. A heck of a season, and a heck of a final day.

Actually, not necessarily the final day. If I want to be a complete nutcase I could check out the D1 and D2 finals tomorrow.

  1. senior game

Dan i know there is a senior game for CHSHL but is there one for Sec 1???

  2. aa

    yeah there is.

  3. purple

Who does MW and Ithaca play? What was the scores of the other games.?

  4. History

Dan- I believe in 1988 Skaneateles and Salmon River went to a shoot out in the finals. I believe that nobody scored and they were co-champs.

  5. suffern

Great game and great season suffern, you should be proud!!!

  6. hmmmm

history is correct. there were co champs in 88 because nobody could score in the shootout

  7. giants hater

I would like to congradulate my school on a great season
along with Clarkstown North , Monroe and Rye great season.

I do agree with Ithaca winning they are a great team and they seem to have our number. I don’t like the way they
won shootouts are for regular season this is the playoffs
the teams should have kept playing. or play 3 periods
this friday at sport o rama play a game in our area if they
can’t decide it up there. shootouts are for regular season
    not playoffs.

  8. New Topic

Now that High School Hockey is over! are there any players still playing hockey that might be going to States or Nationals?

  9. Not Sure?

    Dan,

When you say that “Now I just work on the all-star issues and prep for the spring season”. What do you mean?

Is this when the committees get together and decide who’s All Tier 1,2,3 etc?

Is there an “All County Team” for Westchester and Rockland (Combined) or do you select one for Westcheter and one for Rockland?

And who decides? Is there a Coaches Committee? and if so? who are the coaches who decide?

Dan, By the way, YOU MADE THIS HOCKEY SEASON VERY ENJOYABE! BET YOU CAN”T WAIT UNTIL NEXT NOVEMBER! (Seve Months and Counting) LOL

Take care and ON BEHALF OF ALL THE HOCKEY FANS,

    Thanks a MILLION!!!!

  10. From a Clarkstown North Fan....

As a North fan, I have to give shoutouts to our great rival who should be very proud of themselves…

To Suffern, from this North fan, you guys should be very proud… hold your heads high, you are truly one of the best teams in the state, and you proved it.

Seniors – Nick Clark and Chris Wynne – you guys are tremendous players, best of luck to you and these are memories that will last forever! You will be forever part of the rich and proud tradition that is your Suffern hockey program.

Juniors – what a great group you guys are. Salt, Ruthberg, NATOLI, Conklin, Ojeda, Shore etc. It’s your team next year and I don’t htink there’s a better group of classy kids to lead next year’s team. Best of luck next year in your Senior Year!

Special shoutout to “Natoli the Goalie” – all I can say is, WOW!, you are the best goalie in the state – 1st Team all state in my book and everyone else’s it seems like…

Heck of a season guys, thanks for another year of great competition with my North, and best of luck to everyone!

Mr. Kiernan – awseme job reporting this year! this had to be one of the busiest blogs on the Journal news site, and you did tremendous. Boy was it fun coming on here for Pre game talks and post-game wrap-ups! Thanks for following North all over NY state in the outbracket, and Suffern and Rye in the states and ultimately Ithaca.

To the rest of the bloggers – i know it got crazy at times, but it was fun! Glad there was a blog dedicated to talking Section 1 hockey this year! Great season everyone!

  11. Nyack66

Congratulations to Rye, Suffern and North. Four Hudson valley teams in the States!

    Awards: WORST ATHLETIC ORGANIZATION EVER—PSAL

    1) A shootout at the States – its a joke right? Next year to cut down on travel coin flips instead of games.

    2) Cherry pick your division—you can be 5 times the size of your opponent!

    3) No wireless access? Of course not, the tournament is held in the middle of nowhere. It belongs in Madison Square Garden. ( New Jersey manages to hold theirs at the Meadowlands)

    4) A Million Mile March for the outbacket?

    5) No internet radio? Gee, maybe its because they charge an exorbitant rights fee.

    6) Okay I am not even going to go into the whole track meet thing…

  12. THANKS EVERYONE!

Well said “From a Clarkstown North Fan”!

Great season players and bloggers haha! Everyone on this blog, whether they were a Clarkstown fan, Suffern fan, etc. gave credit where credit was due to their rival, just liek the above post…

AWSEME YEARS EVERYONE! GREAT JOB DAN!

REST OF THE BLOGGERS – it was fun!

  13. Great Sec 1 season everyone!

    Thanks everybody!

So Dan, when do All-County, All-State, etc. come out? And what type of mock awards are you thinking about?

  14. Mahopac Guy

One thing is for sure…Hockey is alive and well in west/rock/put. More than 7 years since Brewster built the rinks and put hockey on the map. Section 1 has to be recognized as a power, just like the other sections in NY. More than one team kicked some northern butt this year. We have great teams, great coaches, (could use better rinks) but someday, its going to get even better.
Crowds at the rinks are fantastic, almost better than hoops in the winter!
Even though most of the players will end their careers once they take off the jersey for the last time as seniors, they can all look back and say they had a blast playing with and against the group of Section 1 participants.
    Its been fun.

  15. tourney time

    dan,

thanks for all your hardwork this season. your articles and blogs have been great, especially your playoff coverage. cant wait until next year. hope to see some articles throughout the off-season!!
again, thanks for your work, hey JN—-Give Dan a raise!!!!

  16. Blog Withdrawal

    Dan,

My blood ran cold as I read your words – you will be shutting down the Hockey Blog in the near future. What are we Hockey Bloggers to do? Am I to survive with a by reading a Lacrosse Blog—- or is there a Twelve Step program to overcome my Hockey Blog addiction? I know I am not alone. Give us some guidance. Dan, now that I’m addicted – what are you writing next?

  17. hockey-lax baller

hey dan, do you do lacrosse also? We could use a guy like you for that sport. Will there be a lacrosse blog as well?

  18. suffern

ithica wins 2-1 in double OT.. you should be proud suffern

  19. dimpled chads..

CONGRATULATIONS TO SUFFERN’S TOMMY NATOLI (FIRST TEAM ALL STATE), CHRIS WYNNE (SECOND TEAM ALL STATE) & ZACH SALT (THIRD TEAM ALL STATE)!!!

  20. No Debate!

Results are in and Natoli has it all over the Stepinac goalie!

  21. al lsate

where did they announce the all state team?

  22. purple

    http://www.uticaod.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070311/NEWS/70311006

Monroe-Woodbury won the state championship 4-2. Congrats to them I guess. Clarkstown North gave them their only loss of the season. I guess if North was able to drop down to D2 they would have been the favorites to win the state. I wonder if the people in Monroe-Wodbury also feel that it is a bit of a hollow victory. I mean to win the state is awesome, but it is like New Rochelle winning the states in football in the C size school division.
Who knows, maybe MW could have won D1, we will never know. Hopefully, they will be shamed in to moving up to D1 next year.

  23. al lsate

did wilows or shuman make all state?

  24. purple

By the way, don’t feel bad for Canindaguia high school. They have over 1300 kids in their high school too. Neither should be D2. Whatever, it’s a joke.

  25. goalies

Please lets not debate goalies. Sufferns goalie showed all year he is the best in the area, private or public. He is the only one who will get sniffed out by prep school scouts.

  26. All State

Does someone have a link to where the all state team is?!??!?!?

  27. al lsate

    yea seriosuly

  28. All State

Matt Willows has to be on 1st team All State…

  29. All State Link

Anyone have the link for the All-State Teams??

  30. No Debate!

Doubt Matt Willows will make 1st or second team. Maybe third but may get shut out all together. Usually, teams are made up of semi-final teams.

  31. All State

Both Willows made All State 1st team, Shuman made All state honorable mention.
Natoli made All State 1st team, Wynne All State 2nd and Salt made All State honorable mention

  32. Source?

    whats your source?

    Defense: Willows (Clarkstown North)

    G- Natoli (Suffern)

    SECOND TEAM:Defense- Wynne (Suffern)

HON MENTION:Forwards- Salt (Suffern), Shuman (Clarkstown North)

  34. Way to go

Section 1!!!! Thats 6 kids from section 1 that made it!
Congratulations to you guys! You worked hard all season!
    You deserved it!

  35. DukeLacrosse

thats what i gathered from this site and that site..so far..doesnt meant its correct..i just copied what “All State” wrote above me here, and what someone on syracuse put about the Willy North and Liverpool kid

  36. if i had to predict

FIRST TEAM ALL COUNTY AND FIRST TEAM ALL LEAGUE SHOULD GO AS FOLLOWS:

    1st team all county (rockland):
F-M Willows, Js Shuman, Z Salt
    D- C Wynne, R Wilows
    G- T Natoli

    1st team all league(1):
F-M Willows, Js Shuman, Z Salt
    D- C Wynne, R Wilows
    G- T Natoli

  37. predict

there is noo first team all league and what do you think about westchester?

  38. Source?

“if i had to predict” – thats the way i think its gonna be for All County… Natoli, both Willows, Josh Shuman, and pick any two of the following: Salt, Wynne or Clark

  39. tourney time

suffer and north players will dominate all the post-season awards. Schelling Coach of the Year, Rye coach deserves a lot of credit too.

  40. Westchester All County

First of all, I think it’s crazy to have All County Teams for Both Rockland and Westchester County. But if you have to pick a team from Westchester, here’s my picks for Public School All County:

    Forwards: Bloom,Conner,Rodeschini

    Defense: Hagen,Cimadomo

    Goalie: Donahue

Here are My picks when you include the (JUST)CHSHL players:

    Forwards: King,Malone,Cambria
    Defense: Clare, McCabe
    Goalie: Ferguson

    Combined: (Best in Westchester County-Public/CHSHL)

    Forwards: Malone,King,Bloom
    Defense: Cimadomo,McCabe
    Goalie: Donahue

  41. fanotgame

Rye D man Marshall Rogers’ game is a few levels above Clare and Hagan and he is a little more dynamic than McCabe. His broken skate blade at the start of the MW game put Rye a bit on its heels. Jordan Eck should be mentioned along with all those forwards discussed above. These two Garnets are both juniors and will likely have their recognition next season.

  42. all county??

Lets go with winners those that helped their teams succeed

    Forwards- Eck King Malone

    Defense- Rodgers Hagen

    Goal- Donahue

  43. Section1Fan

    Forwards: Malone,King,Bloom
    Defense: Hagen,McCabe
    Goalie: Donahue

    Honorable Mention

    Forwards: Conner,Rodeshini,Guilmette
    Defense: Clare,Rodgers,Cimadomo
    Goalies: Ferguson, DiMario

    Hey all county??
Don’t even have Eck on my top list because he disappeared most of the season this year. He had better numbers as a sophomore. The only other question mark I have is Bloom. He’s a great skater and knows how to bury the puck, but he also disappeared in most of his league games this year. But if I had to pick a player to play, I would choose a Bloom. He’s a threat at all times versus an Eck who sometimes is very TRANSPARENT!

  44. Section1Fan

    fanotgame,

There’s no way Rye survives next year without Donahue. Eck and Rodgers can not carry a team.

  45. mike smith

the stepinac goalie had no team around him and still was the best , natoli on suffern had the best team in the hudson valley around him. The stepinac goalie won games by himself with no help at all they scored the 2nd least amount of goals in the league and the still beat good teams. Natoli has a team that scores alot and has the best defense in the league so shots on him wheer limited and are from far out. I think natoli is a good goalie but the stepinac goalie had a team that is not as good as suffern and everybody out theer knows it.

  46. CHSHLFan

    Hey Mike Smith,

The Stepinac goalie is good and rated high in NY, but you have to give the node to Natoli this year.Alot more goalies had better seasons than the Stepinac goalie this year.(i.e. Donahue,Ferguson,DiMario,McIdoe,Natoli)

After looking at the games that Stepinac won (Which wasn’t many), which games would he take credit for. Actually, there’s a number of games that he played and were never reported, which would make his GAA average go even higher.

  47. mike smith

    hey chshl fan

the stepinac goalie reagan does not go to all the stepinac games he plays jrs for applecore and is already gettin scouted by colleges and turned down prep schools since he was a freshman. also out of all the goalie names u said they wheer all on a team that scores more goals than stepinac and has alot better defense. I will give natoli wat he deserves but also look at the team he had.stepinacs team was weak but will be alot better next yr and you will see the numbers reagan will throw up with a good defensive mind team like fordham rye and suffern had

  48. No Debate!

    mike smith,

What makes you think Stepinac will have a better season next year. They’re losing 10 + seniors. Alot of Defense and some real hitters.Do you really think that their JV is going to help out Regean. Don’t think so…It’s going to be along season with no Defense or scoring! What makes you think Stepinac retuning players are going to score more goals. As you said, had very few scorers and the ones that are returning are nothing special. Reagen will not make the difference. He can stop only so many shots. And by the way, he did play all the games except for 5 games and Stepinac won 4 of those. So he wasn’t needed. And most likely, next year he’ll be playing Juniors somewhere else which means he’ll probably miss more games. He needs to play juniors because if he just plays for Stepinac, he’ll have a very long season. He needs to play against the best competition to be scouted for college. Same applies for Natoli.

But then again, if you really think he’s going to go from High School to Play D1 Hockey….It’s not going to happen. If you know how D1 hockey works, it just doesn’t happen. If a player is that good, he’s been plucked out of the system and placed within the USA youth hockey program!

  49. fanotgame

    Section1Fan

I think you underestimate Eck’s contribution to the Garnet’s season and to their playoff run in particular. I attended most of the Rye games this year and agree that he (Eck) looked a little worn out in the middle of the season. This could be explained by a long football season (Jordan played QB/DB for Rye in the football state semis in late November) and getting up to speed for his Brewster jrs team. But, Jordan found his game and led the Garnet offense thru the playoffs. It was he who score 2 in the last few minutes to eliminate Ossining. Then after others on the team put away Pawling, Jordan had a 4 point game in the Sectional finals against John Jay, including 2 second period shorthanded goals (about 15 seconds apart) that iced the game. Next up was Salmon River where Eck scored the all important 2nd goal in the third period of Rye’s 3-0 regional win. He then got us on the scoreboard up at Utica. Eck did not have many opportunities to pad stats this season as Rye played a difficult schedule, including 7 games vs. league 1 opponents (including state D1 semifinalist Suffern), two games against MW and a few games against strong upstate opponents. He also contributed to the super Rye team D and skated on the penalty kill. So much for transparency.

  50. mike smith

yes i agree wit you stepinac is losin seniors but they did not do much. The defense was big hitters but they wheer never back to help reagan out. The jv had a goal scorer and has solid stay home defensemen. Stepinac top goal scorer and assist leader are juniors and they will be layin next yr. Reagan wont be playin as much which will hurt stepinac because he will be playin another yr of juniors at applecore or at where ever he wants to play. Stepinac will be alot better next yr and theer only competition will be iona and they r losin theer biggest hitter also so it will be a few very good games. Fordham has lost every1 i willl be veyr surprised if they even go 500 in the league

  51. Be prepared!

    mike smith ,

They have no scorers and maybe one defensemen. They have players that skate up and down the ice but can’t put the puck in the net. They might of been successful on the JV level but on the varsity level they were transparent.

And I think Fordham is going to surprise you next year. Concerning Iona, I think they are going to be very competitive. GOing to have three stong lines, strong D and a good goalie.
