Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley with Harold Gutmann

Remembrances of semi-final Saturday

March
11

Well, by now we know that Ithaca won the state title in Division 1 and Monroe-Woodbury won in Division 2. Both teams that knocked out our section champs went on to win state titles.

I think it’s much more meaningful that Ithaca won, and in double overtime. That means that Williamsville North couldn’t beat them in double overtime even though Ithca had gone to quadruple overtime the day before and were probably extremely tired. That means Suffern’s a pretty good team. Who knew?

The Suffern-Ithaca game was one of the craziest things I’ve seen in hockey. The split in shots-on-goal was pretty ridiculous, especially earlier in the game.

It really looked like Suffern should have had it in the first overtime when the Ithaca goalie kicked the net off just before Nick Clark scored. I don’t know how they got back out there and played three more overtimes as well as they did. After rushing out on the ice and celebrating like you just made it to the state championship game, releasing all that tension, I don’t know how you get back into a competitive mode. But they did, and they played that Ithaca team to a stand-still for three more overtimes.

And it’s just sad to see a game like this go to a shootout. No matter who wins, that’s not real hockey. I don’t think Skaneateles and Salmon River went to a shootout in ‘88, as someone mentioned. I think after the fourth OT they just declared co-champions. Of course, you don’t have that luxury in a semifinal game. Unless you want to combine teams to play Williamsville North in the final. But then who starts in goal?

The Ithaca freshman goalie lived up to the hype. Natoli was amazing. Most of those 58 shots were shots that Suffern forces opposing teams to take, and they result in routine stops, but there were some great saves in there as well. And just his consistency was amazing to watch. Starting in the second period of the Shen game, I think he had 87 consecutive saves over the course of 105 minutes of play.

Suffern really proved they were a state championship caliber team this year, and it truly was a team effort. They started out not knowing what they were going to have this season, they took stock, and came together to make the best of it. Only something as random as a shootout could stop them.

Rye, on the other hand, just didn’t have it in the first period of their semifinal, and by the time they got it together it was a little late. They didn’t hit anybody, the forwards didn’t play defense, and they didn’t finish some really good early scoring opportunities. 5-0 at the end of the first period. I said this game wouldn’t play out like the first meeting in Mamaroneck’s tournament, but it pretty much did.

Anyway, Rye is pretty young. Off the top of my head, they lose Smith, Iobbi, and Donahue. I think they’ll be alright.

And so will Suffern. They only lose two guys to graduation. Unfortunately, those guys are Nick Clark and Chris Wynne.

The play by Wynne in the first period to save a goal when the puck dribbled past Natoli was really amazing. And as the game remained scoreless through overtime period after overtime period, that play started to look a lot more important.

That’s all I can think to write about this right now. Commence to discussin’

thank you dan for this amazing season. u really gave section 1 hockey a place to grow and u wrote some of the best written articles ive seen about high school hockey in a long time. see you again next season?

  2. Flatman

The Suffern Hockey team played their hearts out and were beaten by a referee who is either blindly incompetent or worse. You deserved a better fate boys but life is not often fair. You should be proud of yourselves, each and every one of you. You are a credit to your school, your parents, your coach and your sport. Mark these words, Suffern WILL return to Utica next year and WILL win the New York State Division 1 Championship.

  4. Let the crying begin 2

Suffern and North are notorious for “dislodging” the net when a goal is scored against them. This time, it happened to them…how does it feel?

  5. Mel Bridgeman

Does anyone have video of the goalie moving the net before it went in? I would like to see if it was a good call. Did the ref immediately wave it off? Is it not a penalty shot if they think the goalie did it on purpose? Put the video on youtube.com if you have it please. Kinda like when that basketball ref blew the call on Lakeland vs. Peekskill.
I can’t believe that the same Suffern team that lost to Mamaroneck (and was outplayed by Mamaroneck) almost won the state championship. What a huge improvement. Imagine if the Daniels twins were still on the team?

  6. Ron Duguay

No more blog? Where am I going to argue about the Stepinac JV team? And about public schools vs. Private school hockey?

  7. mchink6

    Stop it.

Too many people complaining on this blog and the Syracuse.com forum about a refs call is dishonest. You’ve all seen too many hockey games to know that this stuff cuts both ways, and (here comes the cliche…) “is part of hockey”.

  8. Ron Duguay

Maybe if I saw it, I would complain. I want to see it. Teaching goalies to move the net when they are in trouble is a scummy move, and to do it, is just plain weak.

  9. MW

congratulations to monrow woodberry, you really didnt deserve it :)

  10. Redstone

Thanks Dan for a great season of coverage. Hopefully, you will cover Section 1 hockey next season. If you graduate to something else (what could there be that is better?), please make sure your replacement runs the blog with the same flair you showed. As for Section 1 hockey, things are looking up. Suffern has to be a pre season D 1 state favorite. Rye loses a lot of senior leadership, but retains a skilled core. John Jay will be another strong D2 team, Pelham is always lurking and Brewster is capable of putting together a run. The other D 2 teams in Utica and upstate were not so dominant that the Section 1 D2 winner shouldn’t be considered a state favorite (provided Monroe Woodbury moves up to D1). In D1, North will find a way to stay near the top and Mamaroneck and Mahopac seem poised to get to that top level. If the blog runmors about Monroe -Woodbury joining Section 1 (as a D 1 school) are correct, they will be in the D1 mix a the Crusaders have shown they can play with anybody. I could easily envision a few Section 1 teams in Utica next year. Can’t wait for the first puck to drop in Nov. ‘07.

  11. should have been

I am not whining, but it is kind of sad that the goal by nick clark was called off. After wathing the replay many many times, (the one time I liked that channel 12 news plays the same broadcast over and over and over again) there is no doubt that it was a goal. The puck was clearly in the goal well before the net was knocked off. If it wasn’t how did the puck end up in the opposite corner of the net while the net was still in motion after being kicked off. Either way suffern showed how good of a team they are and should be proud. On to next year and they would have to be one of the favorites to win it all next year!!! Dan, thanks for a great season, I hope your editor sees how valuable you are..

  12. That's Hockey!

    Hey Ron Duguay,

I agree with you about knocking off the net, but That’s hockey. Every “GOOD” goalie does it! It’s a weapon they use to assist themselves and their team. I don’t agree with it but I accept it. ANd there’s not a coach out there that will tell their Goalie Not to do it! A smart goalie will pick their moments (usually twice a game), to get a line change. Remember, the goalie is the so called Quarterback of his team. He directs the defense and if there’s a problem he will step up and do something. And ususally that’s knocking the net off the pegs…..AND THAT”S HOCKEY!

There’s nothing that can be done. Unless a coach tells the Ref before the game that the Goalie has a reputation of knocking the nets off. And even then, the Ref really can’t do anything.

I’ve watched alot of games and barely have I have seen a goalie even get a warning.

  13. Hockey Fan

    A few comments

I agree that a shootout is not the way to end the game. After 4 hard fought OT’s it just didn’t seem right.

About the goal in OT. I think it is just frustrating because this was not just any play during the game. This was a possible game winner in the State Semifinals. They can’t miss these calls.

I would say Andy Iles made some good saves not any great ones. Give credit where credit is due, Ithaca kept Suffern out of their zone most of the game.

Suffern team played with a tremendous amount of heart and it has been great watching these past few weeks.

    Great season Suffern

  14. Education Prep

how about suffern, rye, and fordham all going as far as they did in their respective leagues? this year was truly a great year for southern westchester hockey.

  15. Academic Prep

I agree with EP, this year really should really be a point to all that hockey in the Westchester/Rockland area is for real. Each of those teams represented their schools and areas well. Suffern and Fordham took their games down to the wire (Shootout for Suffern and goal with 0:29 left for Fordham) and Rye did their best as well. This was a great year all around for Sec. 1 and CHSHL combined. I’m looking forward to the CHSHL Senior Game.

I would like to thank you personally for the coverage you gave sec.1,I met you in Utica and said hello, it was a pleasure reading the stories you wrote in the journal news and being on the blogs they were fun.So thanks again and good luck in the future.

I have a Stickies for you (BEST HIT), BEST SAVE BY A NON GOALIE.

  17. Ron Duguay

    To Thats Hockey,
Knocking off the goal on purpose is NOT part of hockey. It is what they call bush league. I played goalie in high school and I coach goalies now, Never once have I been taught to do that, and I would never teach it. It is like teaching kids how to take a dive to draw a penalty. Players that do this should be ashamed of themselves. It shows the quality of their character, which of course is poor. We are trying to teach these kids to become men, not weasels who try to trick and deceive to gain advantage. I would never teach my own children this way of life, and I would hope that none of the section 1 coaches teach this kind of crap.

  18. Ron Duguay

  19. best hit/best save

best save by a non goalie has to go to Wynne during the game against Ithica. After speaking with kids on the bench they didn’t even know why Wynne was skating so hard to the net.. GREAT play.. and as for best hit.. due to the fact that the kid was ok it has to go to Ojeda for his hit against the kid from Mahopac.. WOW!!!

  22. Mountie Fan

    Ron Duguay,

You’re right about knocking off the net. The kid from Ithaca is currently being scouted by the Radio City Rockets because of his kicking ability.

As far as Natoli goes, he gets an unfair bad rap, mostly from Clarkstown North fans, about the net coming off. Sometimes when he wants to cover a puck on the side of the net, or he is pushing off to get to the post, those flimsy magnets are just not strong enough against his 6’2” 190lb force. There need to be much stronger magnets or go back to the unmoveable pipes on the pegs. The goalie used to have to lift the net off the pegs with his shoulders to dislodge the net.

The video replay confirms that in all three games Natoli played against Clarkstown North, his net only came off twice. McIndo’s came off 5 times. And he has no where near the body mass that Natoli has. If you don’t believe it, check out the videos of the games yourself.

In the Shenendehowa game his net came off once and it was done by a Shen player who was pushed into it by Wynne. In the Ithaca game, in 7 periods (75 minutes) Natoli’s net did not come off at all, where as Iles net came off 5 time in the game including twice in the shootout. Iles net also came off 4 times in the final against Williamsville North. Once again, if you don’t believe it, watch the video.

  29. JoeBob

I agree that it is hard for a ref to determine intent when the goal gets knocked off by a goalie. I also agree that they should make it harder to knock off the goal. of course you have to find the right balance between the integrity of the game and safety. however, since it is the goalies who are doing it, the close calls (like the one that cost Suffern the winning goal against Ithaca), should go to the shooter, not the goalie. I also watched the video on news 12 in slow motion and I believe the puck was in before the goal came off. but even if you think the net came off first, you would have to admit it was extremely close. when it is that hard to tell, why reward the goalie? I also think that in the state final four, the goal judges should be trained refs and should have the ability to not only rule on whether the puck goes in, but also whether it did so legally. they are just sitting there looking down on the play. they are not skating at a tremendous pace with players all around them (like the on-ice refs).

  30. Way to go

Its good to see that Suffern stopped all of their whining and crying! and now they are back to bashing North and Praising themselves,
SUFFERN, YOU NEVER LET US DOWN!
Unfortuantely, you weren’t able to score in the overtime in the game that counted!
Maybe next year when you make it up there, with your superstars, they will actually put some pucks da net, if not for your goalie, you wouldnt have made it up to Utica this year!
    you aint got NOTHING!

  31. loss

  33. state

    Hey State,

Your worse nightmare just happened. MW going tier 1, Everyone is back AND I MEAN EVERYONE. MW will win states next year at Tier 1.Bet you wished they stayed at tier 2.

  34. suffern

talk about not havin nothing!!! if willows goes to prep school like he should (honestly, thinking of his future) North has less than nothin!!! and if you knew anything about ithica you would know that they had 9 shutouts this year.. so suffern was not the only team unable to score on them.. and if you saw the game or the replay on the news.. they did score.. puck was definitly in before net came off..

  35. NAtoli,

Heard Natoli is going to Prep school, which makes alot of sense. He needs another extra year or so if he wants to continue playing hockey at a higher level. If and I do mean IF, who would step in for Natoli?

  36. loss

how do you know MW has moved to div. 1? where did you hear that and quote your source please.. don’t believe it..

  37. goalie

Natoli is not going anywhere.. I can pretty much guarantee that.. but if he did, it would probably be Gabriel, very good sophmore.. could have started for most teams this year..

  38. state

are you telling me that MW does not have 1 senior.. find that hard to believe

  39. seniors

    MW has 7 seniors!!!

  40. North 2007-2008

its double or nothing with Matt Willows and Jake Shuman – either they’re both staying, or they’re both going. If they both go, it could be a long year for North’s offense next year…defense and goaltending will still be solid, although they lose their “scoring defensemen” in big Willows… but if little Willows and Shuman go, bye bye North from the top of the standings

  41. hockey fan

North’s coach has to be praying they stay for at least 1 more yr

  42. most likely to score overtime game winners against north

forgot to add Eddie Butterman (2005) to my aforementioned list

  43. north

from the top to the bottom.. might even be a leauge 3-4 team.. all they can hope for is to merge with south.. but even that won’t do them much good..

  44. way to go...down

theres a difference between arguing a goal that was in on film that cost a team a state championship.. and crying about refs/djs/etc…the main difference is that suffern had a shot at the state title..and the last time north was up there, they could have scored a touchdown v salmon river and still lost by 3

  45. Section1Fan

    Hey goalie,

Natoli has to make some sort of move…He needs another extra year or 2 playing at a higher level. If you’re telling us that SUffern is going to KILL every team next year, then Natoli will not be challenged. And he needs to be challenged to get to the next level or he’ll be playing club hockey somewhere! He’s not ready for D1 yet…..

  46. predict

all rockland – Wynne Willows Willows SHuman Salt

all westchester- Cimadono Rogers Alosco Bloom Eck

  47. predict

    goalies natoli and donahue

  48. way to go...down

chill out gabriel..your time will come after next year

  49. goalie

section 1 fan.. i don’t disagree but trust me when I tell you he will be back next year.. I will be shocked if he’s not

  50. Section1Fan

Natoli is good, and now don’t shoot the messenger, but Joe Regean is rated higher than Natoli. Natoli will be lucky to make the Empire State Games this year. He got knocked out early last year and this year the competition is going to be alot TOUGHER!

Regean, plays Juniors for NY Applecore. ANd most likely is either going to a Prep school next year or playing for a Junior A team somewhere. Doubt he’ll play High School because he knows it does nothing for him. That’s how you get discovered. Not by playing High School Hockey where only 30-35 % of the players can actually skate. WHen you play juniors, you’re not playing with “Ankle-Benders”. Ever game is a challenge.

You need to be challenged every game. NAtoli or Reagen will NEVER BE CHALLENGED playing high school hockey. No one will watch them….....and that’s the truth…..So DON”T SHOOT THE MESSENGER!It’s the facts and you can probably ask Natoli and Reagen, I’m sure that they would agree.

  51. FYI

Section1Fan…not too many ankle benders on Stepinac, Iona, and Fordham but that’s neither here nor there…the real issue is whatever happened to playing for the pride of your school? so it might not do anything for them as far as scouting goes (not saying shouldn’t transfer to prep schools) but if you go to a school and you’re any good just play…are they going to earn livings as a goalies? doubt it.

and for anyone who’s interested, Fordham will be represented in the Senior Classic by:

    William “the brickwall” Ferguson
    Luke “the mailman” Malone
Ben “the real hebrew hammer” Hertz

and best actor is definitely rich willows…great player but holy christ does that kid dive…it’s just soft hockey.

  52. hs hockey

i agree with everyone that willows is an amazing player, but shuman just played on a great line, and does not hold a candle to willows… and most likely would not be able to play prep school, no offense to shuman who is still pretty good

  53. Possible Clarkstown North/South Merger

Regarding a post above, a North/South merger isnt entirely out of the question and very real possibility in the next few years… some have been pushing for this for years… every year there’s good players on South and we know there are always good players on North (at least in the last 7 or 8 years)... a merger would take the best of the best… one super Clarkstown team… then the Clarkstown Capitals would be a true feeder for the Clarkstown Varsity team, much like the Ramapo Saints are for Suffern… take this year for example… can you imagine Mike Holvig on the line with Matt Willows and Josh Shuman?!?!? I’m not saying its the best idea and there are some supporters and haters of this idea, but its something to think about especially in hockey, when there’s never enough kids as there are in sports like basketball, baseball. Clarkstown already has a few combined teams – Swimming, Skiing and Gymnastics. Why not?!?!? They almost certainly wouldnt need to worry about depth each year…

  54. feel free to post this on syracuse.com

  61. The Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

The straight poop is this….You gotta be a weasel to teach kids to push the net off intentionally. The other problem is Caninduagua has over 1300 kids and also played in D2. So if MW goes D1, will the other parts of the state still pull the same crap? OR will each section chairman do what is right and push to make some hard and fast rules on what team can go where. MW lost to Clarkstown North, which just shows that North would have had a real good chance to win the state if they were still allowed to go D2. Nobody cares about MW D2 state trophy because it is tainted. Like if Mt. Vernon played BRonxville in basketball. Just not that impressive. As for Empire states… politics plays a big part in that stuff, and you have to be a total moron to take Reagan over Natoli, Natoli has proven to be the best in section 1, Reagen could not even play well enough to get his team in to the CHSHL playoffs.
PS, I hear Stepinac JV is already practicing at Murrays at 11 pm on Sunday Nights to get ready for next year. STEP JV RULES!!!!! Also, who will be the most obnoxious blogger next year with everyones favorite pretentious player graduating….Do I need to name names?

  62. Be prepared!

Hey Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil,

Natoli has always been rated behind Reagan. Don’t be surprised if Natoli doesn’t make the team again. Reagen made it last year and I’m sure he’ll make it again this year. Usually, they bring in a goalie that will be on the team for two years.

I agree with you that politics play a big part in the picking of the Empire team. Even though they did well last year, there were at least 3 players that made the team because of the parents relationships with the coaches. But that comes with the territory.

This year, the goalie competition is going to be unbelievable. You got Natoli, Reagen, Sullivan and a few Ice Time goalies. And let’s face it, the Ice Time goalies have a real in for the Empires.

Just wait and see!Maybe this should be a REALITY SHOW! Wouldn’t that be interesting!

  63. Kramden53

I don’t think you’ll even see Natoli try out for Empires. It was a waste of time. Regan was picked before tryouts started and he told everybody! Believe it or not, Natoli is much better at baseball than he is at hockey! He batted over .450 last summer in 70 games on a 19yr and under team and hits for incredible power. And, probably one of the best defensive catchers you’ll ever see. As you can imagine….nothing gets by him.

  64. Stickies

  69. Natoli-baseball

Natoli did not even make the Suffern varsity baseball team last year so how can you say he is BETTER at baseball ?

  70. CHSHLFan

    Hey hockey,

I agree with you that Regean is good. And if you look at him the past 3 years, NOBODY COULD TOUCH HIM! But he had just an average year. Can’t blame his teammates, it just wasn’t a really great year for him.

Stepinac Hockey is going to really hurt him next year, if he has the same type of year that he had this past year, his stock is going to really drop.

As you know, you only get the recognition when your team does well. Suffern,MW goalies will get all the press next year because they will be WINNING!

I think Stepinac will be an OK team. They are going to still have a problem scoring and their defense will be very average. They will be competitive for most of their games but losing 10 seniors will hurt them. That senior class had alot of potential but never excelled! Missed the playoffs two years in a row (A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT).And for next year, there’s only so much the JV will bring to the table.

It might be a long season…..But hope not!

  71. The Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

There are intangibles that come with goalies…Natoli has them and Regan doesnt. Kinda like Derek Jeter, doesnt look all that flashy, but he is certainly a winner. Natoli is not all that acrobatic, so I can see how he would not be all that impressive. Either way, Empires is all bull****, and it is politics at its worst.
By the way CHSHL Fan brought up JV stepinac….again. Why, if Step JV is so good, the varsity stinks? Just goes to prove that Modified and JV records mean very little. It will be interesting to see if anyone goes to prep school next year.
By the way, according to some posters, Regan is like the 3rd best goalie behind FP and IP in CHSHL. I never see CHSHL games, so I wuld not know.

  72. Monroe Woodbury

Is MW going to play in Division 1 next season? Is this true or just a rumor? Can anyone confirm this because if so then that eliminates the out bracket-tournament.

  73. Section1Fan

The Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil,

I agree with you that JV and Modified means “NOTHING”!
Stepinac has Freshmen and Sophomores playing JV. If you look at the other CHSHL teams, if the player is good, they move them up to varsity. If they left these players down on JV, then Stepinac’s JV’s team would get killed.

Two years ago, I’m told that the JV team, who had Regean as their goalie, won the JV CHSHL season. Do you really think that Regean was challenged. I quess the question that should of been asked is, If Regean was that good, how come he couldn’t beat out the varsity goalie.

  74. North/South Merger..hmm

There is some good reasons for this merger, primarily it would be an excellent team who each year would be a perennial section 1, league 1, and state title contender.

However, is it right? The combined schools population is 2,500? And…there are already two good hockey programs going. That is more kids playing a high school sport.

The sense is that the CN program will be slipping in the next few years..so is a merger necessary just beacuse they they may be regulated to league 2.

Sometimes it makes sense when programs are in mortal jeopardy of folding..like E. Ramapo (which ufortunately still couldn’t be saved) or the small Westchester schools..But large seemingly healthy programs, this is just a bad precedent that would encourage other large schools to merge

  75. step/Suff goalies

Please. Do not mention the Stepinacs goalie in the same sentence as the Suffern goalie. The Suffern goalie is the best and has been the best goalie in our area for the last two seasons. The Stepinac goalie is good but he is not in the same class as the Suffern player. Stepinac plays a much weaker schedule and has been less successful in the last few years. As a matter of fact there are probably 3 or 4 goalies in area HS that are as good as the Stepinac player.

  76. Starship trooper

    Hmmm. Agree fully….
It’s better to have more teams and more kids playing hs sports than to start combining for the purpose of staying at a higher league level. As it is most of the L1 and L2 teams only play 10 kids. Combine and that’s more kids not playing or not even on a team. If your truly a Tier 1 player then you have options, be it prep, midgets, juniors to progress in a hockey sense. If you’re not and HS is your hockey opportunity I’m sure most kids would rather just play the games. At that point who cares what level the team is, L2 or L3 or L4 or L5?? Play and compete and represent your school and yourself. At the end of the day only 2 teams win states anyway.

If C-North is going to be weak over the next few years (and none of us know that) so what? I bet the kids in the school just want to play. Tell a 3rd or 4th line forward he’s cut so that they could combine with C-South and stay in L1 and how long will the combined team even stay strong???

  77. Rumour Guy

I heard that Brewster, Carmel, JFK, Somers, Mahopac, John Jay, Put Valley, North Salem, Pleasantville, Yorktown and Lakeland are all merging next year as well. They are going to have 75 kids on the roster and will only dress 10 and 2 goalies.

    Can anyone confirm this?

  78. Mountie Fan

“Natoli did not even make the Suffern varsity baseball team last year so how can you say he is BETTER at baseball ?”

He wasn’t given an opportunity to try out for Varsity. Why? That you’d have to ask Gamma. Suffern varsity baseball is very political. And I don’t think Tommy cared that much.

The competition he played against in summer ball was like playing Junior A compared to Varsity. Based on that alone he’s been approached by 3 colleges and the Minnesota Twins.

  79. Kramden 53

Exactly what Applecore team does Joe Reagen play on? I don’t see him on the Junior A or Junior B roster.

  80. Natoli-baseball

Hey Mountie fan, you must be Natoli’s dad. Suffern coach had another sophmore catcher on the team that was BETTER than Natoli. If he was good enough he would have been on the team and would have started. Stick to hockey and check your ego at the door.

  81. LoHud Hockey

    To Monroe Woodbury:

Yes, MW is definitely playing D1 next year, but they are not playing in Section 1 as some people have posted. Section 9 will still have it’s own 4 team league, but when states come around, they will split into D1 & D2 like Section 1 does. And yes, this does eliminate the outbracket tourney. The question now, to be fair, is whether Newburgh is also going to play D1 since their enrollment is almost double MW’s. Nobody complains about them playing D2, though, because they are not winning. Once they get some wins under their belts, I’m sure the complaints will start rolling in as well.

  82. Mountie Fan

Reagan is on the Applecore Young Guns Junior Team

  83. Young guns

Kramden, He’s on what AppleCore calls their Young Guns’s team. They play in the CHA Premier League (they have 3 leagues, Premier, Selects and Development)......
    http://www.jrhockey.net/player_roster.php?team_id=13352&schedule_id=5641&league_id=1127

  84. mchink6

Newburgh should play D1…they wouldn’t beat MW…but they are a large school, good in other sports, but not a hockey powerhouse. North Rockland is a comparable example.

Them playing D1 does not preclude them for competing for a Section 9 league title.

  85. Mountie Fan

I’m not Natoli’s Dad but I do have a kid that was screwed over by Gamma. And he wasn’t the first and won’t be the last. Guaranteed.

  86. LoHud Hockey

    To North/South Merger..hmm:

What you said about East Ramapo was not entirely true. Ramapo & Spring Valley never had separate teams. When they created their hockey program in the early 90’s, there were about 4 kids from Spring Valley that played hockey and about a dozen or so from Ramapo and a bunch of these guys played for the Saints. Since they are the same district and SV would never have enough interest on it’s own to field a full hockey team, the team was merged from day 1. It was not done in an attempt to save the program. Problem was the only people who played hockey in that entire district were for the most part on that 1st team and they never did anything to develop kids at the elementary school level, so as the original kids started graduating, there was no one to take their place. Their first year was their best year and it was all downhill from there.

As for a merger between North & South, I just can’t see it happening unless they got that greedy & couldn’t live without being in League 1. North has been good for the last few years, but had never really been much of a force before that. South has gone up and down every few years since their team first started over 30 years ago. I can’t ever recall a year where both were good (they have been evenly matched in some years, but never both premiere teams at the same time). North will be down in coming years (especially if young Shuman & young Willows go to prep school) and at some point South will rise again. Hockey in this area has always been cyclical with the exception of Suffern. They are always at the top, but they always have a partner or two at the top with them. It’s always Suffern & somebody else. That somebody else is currently North, but it has been Mamaroneck, Rye, South, and if you go back 20 years, yes, even North Rockland & Nyack took their turns at the top. But they were always there with Suffern.

Hopefully the Clarckstown Central School District will think better than to ruin two 30+ year hockey traditions so they can try to remain in that slot at the top with Suffern. When the cycle turns and they slope downwards as a merged team, they will regret it. Hockey is always at the bottom of the list on a school budget and if two teams merge, the chances of them ever un-merging are slim because they will never add that expense back into the budget.

They need to go into the elementary schools and get kids interested. Get the Clarkstown Capitals to run some mite & squirt clinics. Some learn how to skate clinics for the young ones. Then they will keep their traditions going strong well into the future.

  87. suffern

One of the biggest reason suffern has been so good for so long is they do start them young. Every year a bunch of the kids on suffern varsity and modified stick around after practice and work with the little kids. I mean little like 4-5 years old. Many of them can’t even skate..I guarntee they remember this as they continue to grow into hockey players.. the kids look up to the varsity players and it all has to do with these guys putting in the time with the little guys..

  88. Education Prep

Section 1 Fan – just to clarify…two years ago Stepinac JV lost in the semifinals to fordham prep 2-1. Brickwall played varsity and JV that year and made 39 saves at the frozen tundra of Flushing Meadows. 6th-seeded fordham over top-seeded stepinac. (fordham then lost a best of 3 to chaminade). so despite keeping varsity-worthy players on JV, they still can’t win a -ship

  89. North/South Merger...hmm

    Lohud I agree..

A merger will only reduce the number of kids playing hockey.

The districts spends huge sums on hockey, than do little follow-up. The Town of Clarkstown has built a beautiful roller hockey rink that is barely used. The high school coaches should be there holding free clinics and organizing leagues. All while the roller rinks in Pearl River and North Rockland are being overrun with use. The Clarkstown Capitals seem to operate with little support from the clarkstown schools.

After spending 40 grand on ice time, the people who care about hockey in the schools (hint..coaches) need to get out to promote it!

  90. CrusaderTalk

Stepinac will be lucky to have a Varsity team in in three years. They are already talking about collapsing their JV into their varsity. And I’m told that if they don’t get a large class coming into the school for next year, then the program will be in TROUBLE. They only had 9 skaters on their JV team this past year. If they’re graduating 10 seniors, that means the whole JV moves up.

    Program could be in Trouble!

  91. fantoo

South and North will not merge. Unfortunately, sports is not at the top of the list in the district, especially supporting the hockey team. It is not the coaches’ fault; they have visions of doing more. It is the higher ups that don’t care. It is hard enough getting support during the hockey season; never mind trying to do anything extra. The Capitals have done some clinics in the past and have Clarkstown students on the younger teams, but they are still at the elementary level. It will probably have to be parents and coaches working together to promote the sport to the younger kids.

  92. North/South Merger...hmm

I think we agree fantoo. The North coach is new, he gets a pass for now. He, the other district coaches, alumni and the parents should be promoting the sport. This will probably be done without district funds. A good example is Pearl River. One of the smallest districts in the section has organized into a nice hockey program. Within a couple of years it would not surprise me if PR is challenging for section one D2 title.

  93. Mountie Fan

Anyone who wants to know what kind of baseball player Natoli is, compared to the Varsity Players of last year, need only to look here.

    http://www.ballcharts.com/teams/stats.php?season=2006+SUFFERN+TIGERS&Submit=Go&team=wwwrazzlecom

  94. The Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

Save the baseball stuff for the baseball blog. Natoli is a fine high school athlete, I will be shocked if he plays anything in D1 Baseball or Hockey. So just enjoy it while it lasts.

  95. The Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

Could Natoli make the Stepinac JV hockey team? Very debatable :)

  96. Starship trooper

Eddie Giacomin couldn’t make the Stepinac JV team

  97. Mountie Fan

He wouldn’t want to….too much molestation

  98. Kramden 53

Why don’t you save the ball busting for the ball busting blog. You have to be one pathetic “has been” to pick on a kid like Natoli.

  99. suffern

kramden 53.. I don’t think anyone is picking on him.. just a little fun. He is a great athlete but more importantly he is a great kid,, very humble, polite and just a great guy..

  100. hocke

for those of you who think joe reagan isnt good or should i say think natoli is better. i beleive i watched him in canada last summer beat not just beat shutout & not to mention won the mission cup. the best canadian teamm around the east coast selects( who have kids on there team from finland ,sweeden, russia) who have won that tournament 6 years straight and hasnt lost a game untill he beat them.

natolii wouldd probably get blownn out by them.just because he didnt do so well this year for stepinac and im not blaming his teammates cause it wasnt them but theres nothing he can do if his team isnt providing him with defense and offense. natoli is a great goalie dont get me wrong but id like to see how he does against teams from montreal and toranto. personally and this is my opion and everyone is entitled to there own opion but joe hands down is the best goaliee around here. besides his bad year this year in HIGH SCHOOL hockey..im not taking any credit away from natoli he had a heck of a season. so congrats to him. but i dont like to argue just like making points so have a nice day all of you.

  101. Kramden 53

    Hocke,

You’re either Joe Reagan’s father or John Kerry.

“im not blaming his teammates cause it wasnt them but theres nothing he can do if his team isnt providing him with defense and offense.”

“natoli is a great goalie dont get me wrong…natolii wouldd probably get blownn out by them”

And Natoli did play Junior B Hockey this year on a pretty terrible team and had very comparable numbers to Reagan. Both had around a .900 save percentage and both had GAA a little over 4.

I don’t want to argue either, but you do a good enough job arguing with yourself.

  102. Rumour Guy

Enough bashing of these kids. Jeez…GROW UP

  103. crusader

    education prep

joe reagan was not playin in that game against fordham 2 yrs ago.Him and theer 2 best players wheer in the AAA state championship game which joe reagan made 81 saves against the syracuse stars to get his team 2 nationals. If you didnt hear about that game than ur not a good blogger it was in the usa hockey magazine, new york times, and in many other papers across new york. If every lieks to say natoli is betteer than reagan than look at the empire state games when natoli got cut for hudson valley and reagan was the golaie who got them a silver medal. Also reagan and natoli played together for the ramapo saints and reagan was the starting goalie and played mostly all the games so i dont kno what you guys are talkin about reagan played AAA since he started and he has been playin in the usa national sevelopment camp which i dont see natoli in.

  104. grow up

I think every person in this blog should grow up keep on bashing two 16 yr old kids wow very mature. I think both of these goalies are very good and that we should all leave them alone and talk about other things instead of talking bad about kids who are 16. Everyone should grow up since we all know that the people in this chat are alot older than these two amazin goalies

  105. hocke

im not bashing kids natoli’s a nice kid and so are a couple of kids on his team that i have talked to.

    & to..Kramden 53

if you really want to no who i am not joes dad im not going to hide who i am so.im actually joes best friend & no hes not telling mee too write the or what to write.& i happen to be 15 and a GIRL.. who is a hugee hockey fan and who probably knows more about hockey than you do. so you stop bashing me for my opion. when i know plenty more than you do. so thanks for you being oh so nicee.

  106. hocke hickey

    are you cute?

  107. suffern

I love this.. this is one of the most entertaining things I have read in a long.. time. .it’s better the the jerry springer show.. LOL… the funny thing is i would bet neither one of them could give a crap what any of you say.. keep going it is very entertaining!!!!

  108. Mountie Fan

How did a blog about the State Semi-Finals wind up talking about Joe Regan anyway? Or Stepinac? Or Empire State Games?

And let’s all apologize to Joe Reagan’s sister!

  109. hocke

    suffern..

even tho none of them probably care but its still not nice what people are saying about 16 year olds. & i didnt say any mean stuff about neither of them joes my best friend & im not really friends with natoli but i talk to some of the kids on his team. & even though i 15 and a girl and if u guys think im immature and dont know what im tlaking about i really do.. they are bothh greatt goalies

  110. hocke

im not joes sister. if u read it correctly it said his best friend & if ur being scarcastic thats really funny cause even tho i am his best friend i wasnt talking trash about natoli.. but okay.

  111. suffern

    sorry Reagan sister.. LOL

  112. hocke

i dont find it funny one bit. i actually find it rude. you guys bashh kids do you find fun out of it. & suffern for making a joke out if it when i was the nicest about natoli. this blog is ridicoulous. have fun bashing kids.

  113. hocke hickey

    but are you cute?

  132. long time goalie watcher

I’ve seen both Reagan and Natoli play … they both are very good goalies. But right now the best goalie in NY State from around the Rockland, Orange, Dutchess County area is Tim Carr. As a Sophomore this past season he played for a very young Bergen Catholic team and took Bergen to the quarterfinals in the non-public state championship. He’s already been signed by a top Junior program as their starter for this coming season and he only just turned 16. He was selected to the USA Hockey National 16 Camp to represent the New York District. He was Hockey Night in Boston’s US National Sophomore team goalie last summer. He has NTDP scouts speaking with him. Reagan and Natoli are good but Carr is in a different class.
