Moving on…

The discussion on the last post is getting dangerously hilarious, so we’ve got to move forward.
Believe me, when I got back from Utica, I felt like it was finally all over. The travel, the deadlines, the blogging. But it’s not. We’ve got to do all-star stuff, and we’ve got the senior game coming up Sunday, and the CHSHL senior game coming up after that.
It’s true that we have three guys on the all-state first team – Tom Natoli, Matt Willows, and Rich Willows – and it’s pretty impressive.
Then we’ve got Chris Wynne on the all-state second team, which is a great honor but it actually short-changes him because he was the best defenseman on a team that tied state champion Ithaca 0-0 through four overtimes. Natoli gets a lot of credit, but Wynne made an unbelieveable save of his own in that game.
Then we’ve got Zach Salt and Josh Shuman on honorable mention.
Congratulations to Section 1 for getting two teams to the final four and dominating the all-state first team.
The coaches have had their meeting for all-league, and pretty soon we’ll get that list in the paper. Then I’ll get to work on the Westchester and Rockland all-star teams.
Since some of you are wondering, in the spring I’ll be going back to girls lacrosse. There will actually be a girls lacrosse blog with me and Harold Gutmann (he’ll be handling Rockland for boys and girls, while I do the other side of the river).
Of course, I’ll be doing ice hockey again when the Empire State Games roll around.

The coaches meeting was last night. Does anyone have any info on who made All League ?
When the coaches decide to let the kids know, then we will all know. Do you really want the kids to find out on this blog? I doubt it. Almost like waiting for the white smoke here.
Dan…going from Ice Hockey to Girls Lax? You funny guy.

The award to Josh Shuman for sportsmanship is a joke because he was as bad as his brother Jake, constantly complaining and also being a part of the CN dive team. If thats sportsmanship than I am very confused.
The rest of the picks are all pretty good.
Dan
Will you be at the Exceptional Seniors game on Sunday at the Hutch
what time is the senior game?
4 pm at the Hutch
anyone have the rosters for the Senior Game?
How could you say Wynn was short changed. Just because his team made it to the final 4. You said it yourself if Natoli was not in net the score in the Shen game would have been 6-1 in the first period. Wynn is a good defenseman and congrats to him, but short changed is rediculous.
yes, but there were no better DEFENSEmen in the state than Wynne
CONGRATS TO ALL THE PLAYERS ABOVE and THANK YOU to all the “little guys” on all the teams that came to every practice, worked hard, and contributed in their own way to the success of their team.
Let’s be fair and watch how we phrase things. “Just because his team made it to the final 4” sounds a little less impressive than “because his team shut out the eventual state champion for 75 minutes.”
And to what factor should you give credit for their great defensive efforts this season – Wynne, Natoli, or a complete team effort? My answer would be all three, with different people stepping up at different times. It’s no secret that the great majority of shots Natoli faces are easily stopped because Suffern’s defense gives up that type of shot. Does that mean Natoli is overrated? No. He makes the great saves when he has to.
Dan
THAT WAS SAID PERFECTLY
I would like to add that a defesnemen having 50 or 60 pts in a season is unbelievable but it has nothing to do with playing solid DEFENSE. Which is what you do as a defensemen you shut other teams down.
Dan, you know hockey and especially this suffern team.. if one was there for all of the games where suffern was outshout (CN games for example) you would know that very few were actually good scoring chances
Are those all league awards legit? Isn’t it split out into All-League 1st team, 2nd team, and then Honorable mention? Or is that just All-County? Can someone please specify… And if those are legit, are Natoli and Matt Willows co-players of the year?!??
The blog that says Dan is written to DAN NOT FROM DAN, it is someone talking back to him about his comments. Hey Trojan Defense, get a grip I would have to say that Sufferns coach wasn’t the only voting for All State defense and you need more than just your own coach or even your whole section to vote for you. Thank God they see more than you do and credit was given were it was due.
The Exceptional Senior game is at Ice Hutch this Sunday at 4pm I believe… the coach doesnt have pick the top Seniors from his team to participate, its for any Senior that the coach feels should be honored in this game
Does anyone know the rosters for the game and how are they breaking up the teams? Cause i doubt they would do Rockland .vs. Westchester because Westchester has so many more teams then Rockland does..
This who is the better defenseman is beginning to sound like the who is the better goalie debate from yesterday.
Quite naturally, your school bias will cause you to rate one over the over. Silly stuff. All 4 kids are outstanding high school hockey players. Leave it at that.
no.. yesterdays blog was the best!!! WYNNE RULES!!!!
“it’s the best!!!, mucho take it easy!!””
[...] Original post by Daniel Kiernan [...]
Goals Against Average should be used as a gauge to rank a team’s defense, not just their goalies. Look at the Suffern Ithaca game for example, the team with the best GAA,.093, Ithaca, gave up only about 20 shots on goal and allowed no goals. Suffern, with 1.62 allowed 53 shots and no goals. Clarkstown North’s McIndoe had a 2.37 GAA, which to me indicated that North’s defense as a whole wasn’t as good as Suffern’s at playing defense.
The better, but not perfect, measure for the goalie is the Save Percentage. But this still has alot to do with the quality of the shots the defense allows the opposition to get off. According to the Stats on LoHud Natoli’s Save% was .937 and McIndoe’s Save% was .901. Again, indicating Suffern’s defense did a better defensive job.
A goalie is only as good as the team in front of him as eloquently expressed by Joe Reagan’s friend in another Blog. With a “select” team in front of him, Joe won some Canadian Championship with a shutout and got the silver medal in Empires. But, put the Stepinac Varsity in front of him and the GAA is 2.53 and his Save% is only .893.
Bottom line is Wynne was a better defensive defenseman and Willows was a better offensive defenseman. That’s the way I see it.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz who cares?
you are seeing very clearly, mountie fan
I know….you guys can’t stand to be confused with the facts.
hey patience.. mucho take it eazy!!!
said it before, ill say it again, big Willows is an “offensive defensemen”, and the best in the state… i mean how can u not ive him 1st team all state?
as a defensmen he scored 60 points…. And Wynne was also a great defensemen, but if u wanted an offensive defensemen, pick Willows
lets talk about next years “hebrew hammer line”.. they will dominate next year.. they will combine for a whopping 250 points.. in my opinion of course..
I dont’ want my defenseman looking to score all the time.. i wonder how much further CN would have gone if he was getting back on D, instead of looking to score..I can’t imagine all of his goals and assists came from the point.. he was too deep in the offensive zone.. which is why Mcindoe GAA was 2.37 and natoli was 1.whatever
actually about 95 % of willows goals and assists did come from the point. hard to beleive but yea this did happen. most of his goals were shots from the point and very few times he got cought. and whoever says hes looking for all the points down low is retarted being he was usually backing out of the zone worrying about his other d-men too much.

Oh to be young again.
If I were including the Catholic league, I would have mentioned the whole freshman class of the Stepinac JV. Too bad they have to play JV again next year!!
“lets talk about next years ‘hebrew hammer line’.. ”
How about the “Roamin’ Catholic Defense!” MacCarron, Conklin and Natoli? LOL
the hebrew hammer offense (salt, hiller, ruthberg) + the roamin’ catholic defense(mccaron, conklin, natoli)+ojeda=the continued domination of suffern in the section 1 theocracy
Rockland All County is easy to Pick! Willows,Shuman,Salt,Willows and Natoli
Who makes All County for Westchester County? AND
Does anyone know who picks the All County teams? Do all the coaches vote or is there a Committee? ANd if there’s a committee, what coaches or AD’s make upo that committee?
You left out Wynne!! He should definitely be All County
all westchester is aloscoe, bloom, conner, hagan, cimodono
maybe rodechini over conner or hagan
How about the All-Lutheran Team? Who are the best Lutheran hockey players?
The “choke” stickie goes to Scarsdales loss to mamk, 2 goals in the last 9 seconds of the game. Mamk gets the “going in to the tank” stickie for bombing out the last half of the season after starting out 10-0 including a victory over Suffern. C North gets the “Inspector Gadget” stickie for figuring out correctly that Natolis stick had an illegal curve…however, to no avail as Suffern was able to ice the puck without penalty.
Dan you are doing Girls Lacrosse?
I think we will visit you on that blog, since this one will close at some point. I can’t imagine that blog getting the heat that this one has.
We can argue about how good Stepinacs JV Girls lacrosse team would be…..if they had girls in that school.
awards-
For Westchester all county, include Donohue in goal and replace Hagan with Rogers at defense.
“Mountie Fan” Comparing Willows and Wynne is like two man each holding fans urinating each other. There both great hockey players. The fact that Willows played an average of 43 minutes a game is incredible to me and if he had normal shifts I think he would have had even a better year. Someone told me Willows played the last 10 games with a broken hand as well. I am sure it was close, but The best player was picked in my opinion. By the way I am turning my fan on high speed…..lol
redstone-
I agree with both of those choices but i dont think conner had a very good year but who else would deserve that spot?
the white plains top 3 of conroy encarnacao and sigona.. deserve the recognition of all county too!
no they dont, maybe one of them does but if all county is 5 players where do they fit in? Conroy got bumped off the first line
when do the official all westchester and all rockland dteams come out?
awards-
Forwards are a tough choice, as there are a lot of pretty good ones. Connor is similar to any of the following:
Dillane, Jay two some, White Plains 3 some, Perelle, Eck, Alfonzetti, Novick, Guilmette.
I would give it to Connor as he did it in league 1, didn’t have a sidekick like the Jay twosome did and is older than Perelle, the other league 1 skater.
Top Forwards: Bloom(Scarsdale), King (Iona), Conner (Mamaroneck), Malone (Fordham), Rodeshini (Jay)
Defense: Clare (Fordham), HAgen (Mamaroneck), McCabe (Iona), Cimadomo (Mahopac)
Goalies: Ferguson (Fordam), Donahue (Rye)
i forgot about cody king and malone. Malone is very over rated. Bloom will be player of the year for westchester. Then other first team is king and aloscoe with mcabe and cimadomo
Trying to be fair. Now don’t shoot me because I’m trying to be honest! But here are my Picks:
Forwards:
#3. T.Perlowitz from Ossining. I realize this is a tough choice over his teammate D.Guilmette. But i think he was the main “CLOG” in that line-up. The leader of the team and the individual that got things done. He got his other teammates involved and did alot of things that other teamates would only appreciate.
Honorable mention: Conner(Mamaoneck), Conroy (W.Plains), Rodeshini (John Jay), L.Malone (Fordham)
Defensemen. I’m choosing my defensemen as being the toughest defensemen out their.
#1. F.Cimadomo (Mahopac)Pound for pound, one of the the toughest defensemen out there!
#2, K.McCabe (Iona Prep). Another true defensemen. Tough, not flashy but gets the job done. Barely makes a mistake.
Note: only other true Defensemenn in the area that these two match up against in Wynne (Suffern). These three in my opinion, are the best true Defensemen in the area. I realize Willows is good but he’s not as strong as the three that I have mentioned.
Honorable Mention Defensemen for Westchester: Hagen (Mamaroneck), Clare (Fordham) and Rodgers (Rye).
Top Goalie: Donahue (Rye)
Honorable Mention: Ferguson (Fordham)
Again, these are my choices. Let’s agree to disagree!
how can you say king was more dominant then bloom? King did had less points in an easier league and with more help. Scarsdale had no one else and the only reason bloom wasnt steller in league play was because he was shadowed every game.
Hey Awards,
Still feel that King was more dominant then Bloom this year! Bloom and King each had the same amount of points. But I think King was more consistent throughout the year. And He also was shadowed and still was a dominant force.Bloom really was dominant when he played outside his league.
Again, this is just my opinion. As I said, Bllom was one of the most exciting players in League 1 these past years. This year was good but not his best.
Section1fan,
I strongly disagree in the biggest game of the year cody king did nothing. He had one assist in the entire catholic finals
Hey awards,
Not here to trash anyone…But it’s clear you have no idea what you’re talking about. Just check the game stats between Fordham and Iona Prep.
Hey Awards,
Grow up! What are you a Frustrated Scarsdale Fan. It’s clear you are defending your scarsdale player. Let’s put it this way. Scarsdale had to be one of the biggest disappointment this year. Thank God they had Proctor to play!
Malone had 5 points (out of 6) in the final game against Iona. You can’t knock that…When the game is on the line
he delivers..What more can you ask for.
Malone came up big in the Championship game. No argument here!
bloom really is so overrated its ridiculous, and im being totally serious after playing him. my grandma is almost as good as him. true story
To the Diaper Dandy watcher,
Where did you get your selections from as you have a kid out there who did not play 2 minutes this season ?
Please stick with the blogs in the lifestyle section.
What I don’t get is this. A lot of people are picking the best players. Supposedly the Stepinac Goalie Regan is the best CHSHL goalie, but when people are picking, they are picking the Fordham goalie. I don’t get it, Why is the fordham goalie mentioned at all when the step goalie is on Empires?
In fairness, you have to pick Ferguson (Fordham) and DiMario (Iona). Both these goalies had better seasons than Regan. Have to give Ferfuson the node over DiMario because he came up big in the game that counted. If Iona had won, then you would have to go with DiMArio.
Regan is good but only as good as his defense. Average year for him. Next year for Regan will be another tough year for him.
Section 1 Fan
Since when is Mahopac in Westchester?
Shuman – could you learn how to spell retarded already. What are you retarted.
what happened to iona in the finals should be more of a push to reward cody king and this is coming from the kid he was shooting on…once he was shut down their team began to struggle and couldn’t perform as well as they had the whole season…what does this mean? it means he carried the team (with dimario of course…and mccabe) the whole year.
no one can argue about malone’s spot…like someone said before…the mailman delivered when it counted
as far as goalies go i’m not gonna argue for myself cause that’s biased but at least dimario has to go ahead of reagan because of team performance…iona had a lead in game 3 of the finals and stepinac didn’t make the playoffs…simple as that…as far as me I think CHSHLFan explained the situation perfectly…but i’m biased so w/e
The player from John Jay must have some PR guy. He always gets mentioned as somebody who should make it as one of the best forwards in Westchester. Hes a good player but, his team mate is one point less than him in scoring and nobody mentions him.
Lets look at some facts. I would make a case for
BLOOM
KING
GUILMETTE
PERLOWITZ
SIGONA
ALOSCO
ENCARNACAO
CONROY
PERELLE
CONNER
OLIVERO
That’s 11 players with better numbers than the John Jay player. Lets also consider MALONE and ECK, a few points less, but both were KEY to their team winning a League or Sectional Championships. Lets hope politics does not play a role in these selections. Malone and Eck actually won something and that counts too.
Goalies who WIN big games so therefore
Lets go with Donahue, and Ferguson
rodeschini will murder you
Should really have Rockland/Westcheter/CHSHL seperated all starts since the catholic school guys dont play a full schedule against Section 1.
That would solve everything.
i like jordan…but if you ever watched their games he hung like a horse (sorry its a bit leud). Thats where he got his points, i never saw king play and didnt connor completely fade along with the entire mmk team? Oh yea, and for anyone who watched the rye v jj game on cablevision sports…hahahah…rodeschini didnt even look like he was trying half the time, unless he had a big hit lined up (ussually against a smaller player) or had a clean break, he rarely fought for the puck. For a kid with that talent level to come out and play like that as a teammate i would be pretty ticked.
Agree with you, Bloom played at the Red line all night. Have seen Conner and King play and they can really play and they and they both give 100% at all times.Rodeshini can also play when he wants. There were games this year where he just disappeared and seemed like he didn’t want to be there.
awards, conroy did not get bumped off first line. the coach split the 3 up after going thru a slump but were put back together. but at least one of them deserve all county.
king is way better than bloom. he blows him out of the water. bloom didnt even get a point againt white plains.
for westchester here are my picks in no particular order
fowards: King, Alosco, Perlowitz, Encarnacao, Sigona, Latino, Rodeschini, Eck, Alfonzetti
d-men: Cimadamo, McCabe, Rodgers, Hagen
Goalies: Donahue, Dimario, Regan, Fergueson
**out of my picks, every single one of those fowards, along with Cimadamo, McCAbe, and Dimario came out or played for the brewster travel hockey program. aint that something!
On top of that, Alosco, Encarnacao and Rodeschini played on the same line for years and were impossible to stop. Each had over 50g and 50A every year. Look where they are now. Amazing stuff.
Hey Bulldog Power,
Yeah, look where they are now.
Those Three won Nothing at Brewster.Actyally, when they played together, the Vipers beat them 11 to 2. Maybe they won the Long Island league but never states and never went to Nationals. Nothing to brag about!
Rodeshini played Junior B’s at Brewster and did OK. Nothing special but OK.Disappeared during High School season.
Alosco, Doesn’t play travel any longer at Brewster. When he did play, did NOTHING. Think he only plays High School.
EnCArnacao, did nothing at Brewster, Left Brewster because he hardly played. Went to NY applecore and for two years has done nothing. Maybe third line if LUCKY!
Did nothing? Won CanAm 2x, LI League 3x, Tri State League 2x, went to states 4 years in a row.
Not sure where you got your facts but they scrimmaged Vipers one time (because Vipers play in that ridiculous hudson valley league) and killed them. 11-2? In your dreams bud.
Vipers may have won a State championship but it was TIER 3. Who cares? Never played with the big boys and until they do, they will always be way below the real players who come out of Brewster. Vipers are made up of all the guys who cant make Brewster Teams. Its the fact jack.
Vipers have won the CanAm at least 4 times.. ANd go back into the record book and look at the game that the Vipers beat you 11 to 2 in the Bantam game. It was a an exhibition how to skate. Vipers scored at will against your AAA team.
By the way, YOU NEVER WON STATES DID YOU!
It’s time to stop knocking and comparing these kids on this blog. And there are some great hockey players playing Tier III hockey—so stop knocking that too. Many of the Fordham players for years have played it, and many of the players who made All League in Rockland this year play it. They play it for convenience of rink, etc. while also playing high school hockey. They play hockey because they love the game not because they think they are going to the NHL.
Canam in Lake Placid? Grow up… that means nothing. What players are still playing hockey now after the season is over? I know King and McCabe are headed to Michigan for USA Nationals at the end of March. Anyone else still playing? If not then they shouldn’t be talked about. One day all of you will realize just how terrible high school hockey in Westchester is. Why else would these guys have to go to a different state for some sweet travel hockey?
Have fun playing high school hockey. For 99% of these kids it will all be over after senior year. Anyone know what college team Gitler of Scarsdale or Connelly from Fordham are playing on now? Does anyone remember them?
Want a short blog subject? Name how many kids who played around here in the last 5 years are playing D1 or D3 hockey.
Last years MVP senior players? What school do they lace them up for.
Relax it is just a game! LOL
just a note…CAN/AM is pay-to-play…don’t have to earn anything
[...] Original post by Daniel Kiernan [...]
haha westchester vipers won tier iii states 4 times good job. brewster played in tier ii and then tier i when those 3 guys skated at brewster and for you to say those three have done nothing? your out of ur MIND. rodeschini played junior b brewster this year, encarnacao junior c applecore, and all three of them alosco, encarnacao, and rodeschini are among the elite players in high school hockey around here. those three were dominant while playing together on the bulldogs/express and still are playying incredibly. alosco holds the school record for goals or something. rodeschini made the national festival camp a couple years back? thats nothing? westchester vipers is an absolute joke for rich parents and kids who dont want the real commitment that junior and travel hockey offers.also, encarnacao left brewster because the gm at applecore can and will get him into college for hockey it wasnt because of playing time. also applceore has a 10x better reputation in junior hockey than brewster does. get your facts straight bud. i cannot believe you actually can stand by your word and say those three have done nothing.
Cool!
