Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley with Harold Gutmann

Stay tuned for a picture that puts a great cap on this season

March
21

I just got back from the Section 1 hockey dinner and awards ceremony, and there was a group shot at the end with players from two teams that were thought not to get along. I’m having a copy e-mailed to me, and then I’ll throw it on here.

I wore Suffern blue and sat at the Pelham table, by the way.

  1. banquet

how bad was that chicken parm? What were they thinking?

  2. Daniel Kiernan

    I liked it.

  3. Chicken Parm

i waited a whole year to get that chicken parm…so no bashing it!! HAHA

  4. ICE CREAAAAAAM

yummmyyyy that sure was some good vanilla with sprinkles :)

  5. JV MAN

Where was the Stepinac JV team sitting?

  6. Hair Cuts

hey do they not have barber shops in Rockland County ?...LOL

  7. My-T-Sharp

Suffern won the team award for worst hair.

  8. Mountie Fan

That hair is a tribute to the 30th anniversary of the Hanson Brothers (“Slap Shot” 1977).

  9. Friends

Dan the kids on those two teams get along very well and respect each other-it’s the parents that need sensitivity training.

  10. Duh

Of course they are friends, it’s just sports rivalry. Does anyohe really listen to the garbage that is written.

  11. Daniel Kiernan

I know these kids all respect and like each other. It’s just that some of the blog discussion surrounding their games this season seemed to erroneously imply otherwise, and now we have hard photographic evidence (which, by the way, I hope to be posting sometime later today).

  12. All County Teams

    when are they coming out?

  13. Rockland County All-County

Here are my predictions for All-County awards in Rockland, looks about right, right?:

Co-Players of the year: Matt Willows (Clarkstown North) and Tom Natoli (Suffern)

    FIRST TEAM

F – Matt Willows (Clarkstown North)
F – Josh Shuman (Clarkstown North)
    F – Zach Salt (Suffern)
D – Rich Willows (Clarkstown North)
    D – Chris Wynne (Suffern)
    G – Tom Natoli (Suffern)

    SECOND TEAM

    F – Nick Clark (Suffern)
F – Jake Shuman (North) or Matt Ruthberg (Suffern)
F – Mike Holvig (Clarkstown South)
    D – Mike Conklin (Suffern)
D – Kevin Moro (North) or Andrew Ojeda (Suffern)
G – Chris McIndoe (Clarkstown North)

    HONORABLE MENTION

Zac Hiller (Suffern), Corey Samuels (Clarkstown North), Rob Goldman (Clarkstown North), Craig Simon (Clarkstown South), Josh Moelis (Clarkstown South), Sean O’Conner (North Rockland), Russell Santiago (North Rockland), Chris Denhert (Pearl River), Mike Leone (Pearl River), Matt Scully (Tappan Zee), Mike Fossner (Tappan Zee), Paul Choi (Nyack), Kenny Alter (Nyack)

  14. pic

where is the picture ,I can’t get it or find it

  15. hammer

FYI – most of the suffern/north parents get along just fine , what you see during games and after is a front and nothing more.

  16. suffern

hammer.. the front is them getting along or the other way around.. i think they get along just fine

  17. hammer

I didn’t mean “a front” in a bad way I just put it down wrong, thay all really get along (parents and kids)

  18. Two Teams

maybe Dan’s not talking about North and Suffern – he’s might be talking about Pelham and John Jay…

  19. pic

Its Suffern/North because they took a picture together last night at the Section 1 awards dinner.

Hopefully the picture will be here later today it’s a good 1

  20. ICE CREAAAAAAM

    i want moreeeeeeeeeee

  21. suffern

come on dan.. where is this picture??

  22. awards

was everyone from every team there? seems like a lot of kids

  23. Daniel Kiernan

I’m still waiting on the picture. And I’m having trouble posting pics in the first place because there’s apparently now a limit on how big the file can be. That’s most likely due to our recent server difficulty.

  24. Mountie Fan

Ojeda was a huge piece of Suffern’s success. I would have him at least second team over others.

  25. RyePower

    Rockland County All-County,

Sorry to say, but there can only be “ONE” Player of the year and that goes to Natoli. He beat Clarkstown North when it counted and Almost beat Ithaca.

Willow had a great season, but the the TRUE BRICK (NATOLI) wins hands down. Not even a contest!

  26. awards

I wouldn’t say it’s no contest.. but yes i should go to natoli.. and don’t let me hear how willows had 103 points and is only a soph.. age has nothing to do with this..

  27. awards

can someone tell me who was at the section 1 dinner?? was it every kid from every team? just a select few? what’s the deal

  28. Daniel Kiernan

It was the all-league banquet, so all-league and all-league honorable mention players were there to accept their awards, as well as coaches and parents, of course.

  29. league 5

I FEEL LIKE EVERY KID THAT GOT AN AWARD WAS FROM EITHER CLARKSTOWN NORTH OR SUFFERN. ONLY WYNNE SALT SHUMAN WILLOWS AND WILLOWS. THATS IT THERE THE REAL ALL STARS

  30. Which Willows

    k

  31. The Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

Dan, was it really a “Banquet”? Geez, that sounds soooo femmmm. It was not a manly dinner, with steak and potatos?
P.S. Does anyone own a pair of scissors in Rockland County. I felt like I was watching my favorite 70’s themed movie “Dazed and Confused” on DVD.

  32. Hockey Fans

Natoli over Willows by a mile…No Contest.. Tell Willows to come back next year and put up those type of numbers. That willn’t happen….That’s why he’s going PrepSchool.

  33. outsidelookingin

Moro went from playing offense to changing over to defense the end of last year. this year he played w/ the first line, 2nd line—whatever he was asked to do—he deserves 2nd team too.

  34. off topic

by the wasy if anyone haves io cable…..you can watch the rye vs.john jay championship game on demand by going to the menu then to on domand then to free on demand then to local on demand then to hudson valley and it is right there ....just thoguht someone might want to know

  35. icy ott 44

    yeah thats pretty legit

  36. The Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

Hey off topic. Who was the Rye big wig who got to put that game on cable? I bet if they lost, that tape would never have been aired. Pretencious.

  37. off topic

lol…i stay away from the drama…however its a highschool hockey game on demand…..maybe finally we are getting the notoriety we deserve..maybe before this blog goes off-air we should get a talk about next year….we know who the top guns returning for league 1 are…how bout leagues 2-5(if they were to stay as is)....any takers

  38. predictions

league 1- suffern will be the most dominant with players like salt, natoli, and others returning
league 2- white plains should take down this league woth most of their starting 5 returning
league 3-this one is a toss up, between the rebels and north rockland. The rebls return three of their starting 5 with mucci who averaged about 40 minutes a game and ruiz who dominated the corners. North rockland also has a one two punch with meany and o’conner
league 4- horace greely, a good gritty team should take this league
league 5- obviously eastchester should be the favorites with A lot of youth coming back to this team who gave mammoronek a scare
...if the leagues stay as is these are my opinions however i could see the leagues staying the same

  39. picture

where is this picture i keep hearing about

  40. The Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

With all of Sufferns success this year and almost all their players returning, it would seem that it may be a boring year next year. Remember, there will not be an outbracket game anymore in Division 1, 1 winner thats it. Division 2 is a crapshoot again. I can’t imagine any teams giving suffern good games next year. Sufferns modified team was also very good, they have a few real good players that can take over those 2 open spots next year on varsity no problem.

  41. yea

suffern will deffinatly be the best next year but the year after that is a problem. this year the loose wynne which is bad enough and the year after they loose natoli. this is when their teams drops off…...

  42. Division 2

Suffern is a big school with a lot of talent, but Rye (a division 2 team) is moving up to league 1 after a dominant year in league 2 and can give them a game. I an not neccesarily saying Rye will win, but it will not be a blowout.

  43. Basis

And I could say that Suffern could give the New York Rangers “a game”, but we all know that is baseless.

  44. Oh yea

and don’t count on Suffern dropping off after next year.

  45. division 2?

it wont be a blowout? define blowout?
5-1 a blowout? suffern stopped playing in the second and third, running up the score isnt part of their mindset…

    and now..after that “non-blowout, fluke” 5-1 win last season..suffern brings back the same kids…and u lose…your “Natoli-esque” goalie?

    sorry… 6-0

  46. RICHTER 08

    Rangers v. Mounties

I would take Ojeda over Orr in a TKO

    Goaltending Matchup: Natoli v. Lundqvist—Even
Natoli- First Team All State, League 1 Player of the Year
    Lundqvist- Olympic Gold Medalist

Defense- Wynne > Malik, Conklin > Rosival, Ojeda > Mara
Offense- Clark, Ruthberg, Salt similar to Nylander, Straka, Jagr

Suffern takes it 1-0 in a 4ot shootout

  47. RICHTER 08

    stephane matteau game winner

  48. Mountie Fan

    Where’s the picture Dan?

  49. Daniel Kiernan

I’m still working on it. Trying to get around the size limit of files I can upload to the server.

  50. 2007-2008 Season

Suffern will no doubt be the favorite in Section 1 next year. They will have a veteran, experienced team that has been through states for a few seasons now. In terms of competition – if Matt Willows and Jake Shuman stay at North next year (still no word on their intentions?), then they will give Suffern a game everytime. Otherwise, not sure who else can compete with Suffern. Mahopac and Mamaroneck are always good, but they always seem to be a notch down from Suffern’s level.

Take one season at a time. As far as after next season goes, there is no doubt in my mind that Suffern will have absolutely no problem remaining the favorite in Section 1. Look at the Modified team this year. They have A TON of good young players just waiting to come up. The only down part about that is there are only 2 openings on Varsity next year, so do you take the next best Sophomores (knowing Sophomores cant play on Modified) or do you take some superstar freshmen and start grooming them. That’s a difficult decision coming next year for Schelling and the coaching crew while trying to fill those two open spots because there are so many good players on Modified.

  51. Replacements

Why would Suffern only bring up 2 players. There was only 22 on the roster this year-why not carry 25 or 26, unless there is some limit to the roster #

  52. Patience Buddy

I hear that the Stepinac JV will also in in League 1 next year as well and will give Suffern a run.

  53. ESPN

Saw that on ESPN-(the JayVee), and that Stepinac JV is returning their top 10 players. Awesome.

  54. Just thinking.

No pressure, but I hope my son plays well next year, so I an get that chicken parm dinner and ice cream.

  55. Norman

Nice portait Dan. Looks like a Norman Rockwell painting.

  56. Mountie Fan

Great Picture! How about this for the nucleus of a Junior team from Rockland?

  57. Shuman

YEs this is actually josh. The reason i am looking the other way is salt was pinching my butt lol thank you zack

  58. Hockey Fans

    Great Hockey players, BUT UGLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

  59. Shuman

Hey hockey fans. Truthfully i think we are all pretty good looking im not going to lie lol No Homo

  60. Shuman

  61. Shuman

Hey hockey fans. Truthfully i think we are all pretty good looking im not going to lie. WELL MOST OF US lol NO HOMO

  62. willows

Matt willows is going to prep school. He told me himself and jake shuman is staying. Shuman if he is lucky wil lahve 30 pts

  63. The Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

First off Rye was not dominant in league 2, they had 3 league losses. They lose some important talent, please lets not talk about Rye playing Suffern tough….Rye overachieved, and were handled rather easily by both Suffern and MW. Both teams showed restraint not running up the score. Rye will have a tough time not being the biggest bottom feeder in league 1. It is between them and Yorktown for last place. If they have a great season next year they will also beat out Pelham. But the top teams will handle them rather easily next year. Suffern of course, North of course. Mamaroneck will be better next year, and Mahopac always wins too. John Jay will have more depth, and Pelham won’t have as bad a year as this one.
Like I said before, Rye had a great season…they are not a great team though. All the stars will have to align themselves perfectly next year for them to replicate the season they had this year. The nice thing about Rye moving up to league 1 is, maybe the Mamaroneck -Rye rivalry will get enhanced again to the 1980’s level where they packed over 2,000 per game against one another.

  64. North Fan

haha great pic guys – bunch of characters those North and Suffern superstars are

  65. little willows and shuman

so Matt is defintely going to Prep School, but Jake is defintely staying next year for North? If true, then Jake’s gonna be the #1 guy

  66. JV MAN

Do they have barber shops in Rockland?

  67. lil shuman

who said if lil shuman stays he will play? I heard he’s not playing high school, just travel!

  68. Eagles

Eastchester is moving to league 3 and league 5 has been disbanded

  69. ICE CREAAAAAAM

anyone know where they got that ice cream from at the dinner? mmmmm it was amazing! :!

  70. lax

do you know if there will be a lax blog the season is about to start?

  71. The Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

I hear Suffern will be playing the Stepinac JV squad in pre-season to tune up for the good comptetition upstate next year. Take it easy on us Step JV.

  72. Stepinac JV

    Stepinac JV
    2007 NYS D1 and D2 Champions
    2007 Stanley Cup Champions
    2007 World Cup Champions
2007 Ramapo Saints Invitational Tournament Champions
2007 American Dodgeball Association of America Las Vegas Invitational Champions, soundly defeating Vince Vaughn and Average Joe’s

  73. Section1Fan

    R.I.P. Stepinac JV Team,

Here’s a team that could beat everyone this past season! And I’m hearing that their JV team might not be around next year? Does anyone know if that’s true??

  74. Hockey Fan

The Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil,

I hear that Suffern does have them scheduled but will probably cancel two days before hand because they’re afraid of the CHSHL JV teams!

  75. Unreal Deal

So the question is which team does Real Deal support that he has such a hard time giving Rye credit where credit is due? Seems to have a real ax to grind there. What happened, one of our guys beat your son to the puck or did your team have a bitter loss against Rye? I guess we could say that Rye quit playing and did not want to run up the score on John Jay in the Sect. 1 final or Salmon River in the regionals, but Rye is too classy to play that game. Oh yeah and given another 2,000 students, Rye could more than give MW and Suffern a game.

  76. The Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

Just thinking…that Rye is biting off more than they can chew by going in to league 1. They will do ok, they will play decent games etc. Maybe it is because they seemingly came out of nowhere to win league 2 late in the season, or that they did not have to go through Pelham to win the championship this year or that they had 3 league 2 losses to suspect teams…but for whatever the reason, I never thought they were all that powerful. That being said, Rye won convincingly against JJ as well as Salmon River. So congrats to you on a fine finish. There is your credit.

  77. Hockey Fan

Rye Sucks! They will get destroyed next year,,,, And they were REAL lucky to beat OSSINING!!!!

  78. 2000+

umm..suffern has ABOUT 1200 students…sooo..i guess you can have 2000 more students to give suffern a game

  79. Section 1 fan

To “The Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil” who do you support? If its North than I wouldn’t talk to much about how good north will be next year. Who do they have left? Two Willows and a shuman are gone all thats left is little shuman, who will not put up big numbers without his brother and Willows. i am not trying to take away from a great north season, but i think they will be at the bottom of league 1 next year.

  80. Unreal Deal

So Real Deal, in the interest of full and fair disclosure you still haven’t said who you root for so we can all analyze the validity of their wins and losses and determine whether they underachieved or overachieved. Pelham? Pawling took care of them and Rye took care of Pawling. It would take an awful lot of “overachieving” or “lucky” wins for Rye to go as far as they did.

2000+: MW apparently has 2,500 students. Rye will take the 660 difference between its enrollment and Suffern’s to beat them. Or do you only believe in divisions where it suits your interest?

  81. Section 1

Rankings next year for league 1

    1. Stepinak Jv (who else? lol)
    2. Suffern (brick wall in net)
    3. Mahopac (always strong)
    4. Rye (will continue as a dominant div 2 team)
    5. Mamaroneck (lost a lot of seniors and depth)
    6. North (loss of Willows’ and a Shuman will be devastating)
    7. Jay (another strong Div 2 team)
    8. Pelham (no goalie)
    9. Yorktown (unpredictable ex. tied Rye them lost to jay around 10-0 who Rye beat 6-1)
    10. Scarsdale (don’t even know if they are in League 1)

  82. Rye

Ossining has to stop complaining about their loss to Rye. Does anyone have any proof regarding this or are you saying Rye sould have just let them win?

  83. North next year

Yes – the loss of all these great players – 8 Seniors plus little Willows and little Shuman (assuming theyre both not coming back) will be devastating. But don’t write off North yet. They lose stars every year and kids always seem to step up. They will have 4 decent Seniors (although none up to par of Willows or Shuman) who probably won’t come off the ice, and 3 of them are Defensemen. I wouldn’t be surprised if one moves up to Offense to help out there. And don’t forget they still have the 2nd best goalie in League 1 returning with one year of experience under his belt. All I’m saying is don’t write North off yet. If they start the season like 2-8, then you can talk. But you never know what they’ll come up with, they always seem to stay afloat at the top of League 1. So in sum – Offense will struggle. Defense will be solid. Goaltending will be real solid. Hey, just throwing this out there but I wouldn’t be surprised if they finish 16-8 or 17-7 ish… And if Jake Shuman returns, that’s a little bonus… Should be an interesting League 1 next year…

  84. Section 1

I am not saying North will be a bad team, the only reason I ranked them low is because section 1 is becoming a powerhouse for hockey and it will be hard to be at the top of league 1. I don’t want to take away from north because they were just as impressive as sufern this year, because they won so many games in the out bracket.

  85. The Schwammy's Rankings

Rankings next year for league 1, aside from the Stepinac JV
also, grouped so that teams that I feel will be similar or interchangable for certain ranking groups

    (1)
    1. Suffern- the Mounties return many key contributers to this and last season’s frozen four runs. The only difference is that now it is expected of them.

    (2-4)
    2. Mamaroneck- Glaser as the undisputed starter, they wont be much different then this season, only North and Mahopac wont keep them from making it to the Sec1 finals before falling again at Sportorama
    3. Mahopac- I like the Indians in the three spot this season again. The lose Alosco, but still have a decent goalie and a handful of skill players
    4. John Jay- I like what they have returning for this season. JJ got off to a slow start transitioning to league 1, but with a few good forwards and I think Ponzo is back, should be a good year.

    (5-7)
    5. Rye- Iobbi is back…he was invisible for most of the season but to his credit was there when needed the most. But without Donahue between the pipes, look for this team to look similar to the way Pelham did last season…why not try to play empty net, at least you’ll have an extra attacker
    6. Clarkstown North- Imagine the Red Wings of the 90’s…without Yzerman, Shanahan, Federov, Lidstrom..or any depth behind them….
    7. Yorktown- not 100% sure who is returning, but IF they have some key players coming back AND learn to play disciplined like they did towards the end of this season, look for yorktown to move towards the middle of the pack from the bottom

    (Bottom)
    8. Pelham- besides Flory..well you get the idea

Sec 1 D1 Finals Suffern over Mamaroneck (dj included)
Sec 1 D2 Finals John Jay over TBD

  86. Hockey Fan

The Schwammy’s Rankings, Iobbi is a SENIOR! I think you meant ECK…... ECK was transparent for most of the season, If he plays Section 1, no doubt, You will not know when he’s on the ice.

  87. Rye

Rye’s goalie will not be like Pelham, I would compare Rye’s new goalie to Glaser of Mamaroneck.

  88. Rye

Hockey fan obviously doesn’t know what he is talking about. Rye is moving up to league 1, they are already in section 1.

  89. The Schwammy's Rankings

my apologies for confusing eck and iobbi

i still stand by my comment, he played great at the end..but was invisible against suffern, MW twice, even brewster and ryetown harrision…maybe he made the scoresheet with a point in 2 of these games…but was not an impact player.

granted, he still played great at season’s end

  90. The Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

Whoever you are…you are pathetic that:
1- In a blog you are asking for personal info which you won’t get.
2- You actually care who I am, who I root for etc. What is the difference. Rye has stunk since the late 80’s, and finally , are half decent. Get over the enrollment thing…Section 1 hockey is the only section in the state that made guidelines based on enrollment, and if we were like the rest of the state, Rye would not have come close to making the D2 sectional finals, nevermind states. North, Mahopac, and arguably Mamaroneck were all better than Rye and would have beat them out. And Mamk and North have only about 350 more kids, but when you throw in the fact that every kid just about in Rye has the $$$ to play hockey, and the rink in their own town, then you have a nice little advantage. So don’t play like you are the “little engine that could”...hockey is a different animal. Do you think you could beat East Rampao and Mt. Vernon(huge high schools) in hockey if they had teams?? Of course you could!!!! AnD WHY???? the answer is obvious…MONEY AND INTEREST IN HOCKEY, and a rink in your home town. Nobody wants to hear how you lost to big bad MW, the team MW beat in the states also had well over 1300 kids in their high school too.

  91. predictions

    well said

  92. Food Pyramid

No one likes rye. carbs are being eliminated

  93. yup!

    Very Well said!

  94. Unreal Deal

Well Real Deal, other people on this blog don’t seem to consider it personal information who they root for. You have presented yourself as a seemingly disinterested hockey oracle, but it appears you have an agenda. Could you be someone who has something to lose if Rye does well in league 1? Better to be an underestimated overachiever than an overrated underachiever.

  95. Rye

    To “food pyramid”
If no one likes Rye tell me why Rye had more fans than Jay in the section finals, when Jay was the home team? Also Rye had HUNDREDS of fans travel up to Utica.

  96. Rye

Real Deal must think he is pretty cool agreeing with himself three times after his response.

  97. north over mw

    To “Rye”

If you want to beat Monroe
dont play for Rye (clap clap)

If you want to beat Monroe
dont play for Rye (clap clap)

If you want to beat Monroe
or at least lose by less than three goals
If you want to beat Monroe
dont play for Rye (clap clap)

  98. Rye

Rye will beat north next year, they have no one left so stop talking. Also, given another period, Rye would have beaten mw because they had all the momentum in the world. Also our top defenseman broke his skate before the game while our best forward stepped on cement and could not turn without falling.

  99. north over mw

    HAHAHA

    MW stopped playing after 1
just like suffern did when they both destroyed you

  101. The Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

WOW, I think Rye is trying to be next years Fordham on the blog. Really annoying and insecure. Excellent teams would never play a close game with Rye Town…. Rye lost to Rye Town. Do the math.

  102. Hockey20

Actually Rye Town played Clarkstown North very tight in sectionals and was winning after the first period. Though they did end up loosing the game i think both teams would say it was a good game.
Additionally the titans battled injuries for lots of the season

  103. The Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

6-2 does not constitute a “tight” game. Every game starts off 0-0, so you could say that everyone played a close game with everyone for the first few minutes.

  104. Except

Except the Rye-Suffern game which was tied for only 8 seconds

  105. Alum

What is Mike Holvig doing next year? College or Prep and which school

  106. I missed the chicken parm

Real Deal..if you had watched the rye town game you would have seen that it was a very close game until the last 5 minutes..some argue they got a bit “hosed” anyway. They did fall to a very good North Team in the end. By the way, Rye Town beat Rye HS the year before and JJ as well the year before. Lets not knock a program. By the way, rumor mill is that Scarsdale is going league 2 and that Rye Town is going League 1, it does make sense size of school wise.

  107. The Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

True, scarsdale is moving down to league 2. It is Rye that is moving up to league 1, Rye Town is staying unless this is something very new. I am not knocking any program whatsoever, I mean look at ETB, they were tied with Mamaroneck in the 3rd period. I am just not sold that Rye is one of the “teams to beat” next year.

  108. Size matters?

There is a post on Syracuse.com that you might find interesting. I’m pasting it here:

Just some facts on School Enrollment Size for the public High Schools we talk the most about:

    Shenendehowa HS…......2,898

    Monroe Woodbury HS…...2,376

    Lancaster HS….........1,992

    Ithaca HS…............1,675

    West Genessee HS….....1,662

    Williamsville North HS..1,570

    Suffern HS…...........1,503

    Clarkstown North HS…..1,476

    Greece/Athen HS….....1,444

    Irondequoit HS….......1,393

    Baldwinsville HS….....1,373

    Queensbury HS…........1,292

    Sweet Home HS…..........792

    Rye HS….................715

    Clinton HS….............600

    Canton HS…..............521

    Potsdam HS….............505

  109. The Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

Again, size is not important in a sport that you need lots of money for like hockey. Hockey has never been popular in places like Yonkers, Mt. Vernon etc. because it is an expensive sport. Rye may only have 715 kids, but they probably have 95% of kids who can afford hockey. Mt. Vernon has over 2,000, but I would say maybe 10% of them could afford to play hockey with all its Travel, equipment, clinics, public sessions, camps etc. These are just guesstimates. This is why it is all relative with hockey. The other sports do not factor in wealth like hockey does. You also have to factor in rinks proximity to the school, and youth programs for that community. Until Brewster came along, there were 0 schools with ice hockey in northern westchester. Rye, Mamaroneck, Suffern, White Plains, Pelham, Brewster, all have a large advantage having a rink so close to their schools and in their community. We could pretend that wealth doesnt matter…but the fact is, the best hockey teams are not ALWAYS the best “athletes” they are often kids who have just played sooo much more hockey and went to so many more camps than other kids. Should we punish the kids who can afford it and have families willing to drive them all over the place? No, of course not, but equal enrollment numbers do not equate a level playing field for those schools.

  110. pic

    Dan
Thanks for adding the picture to the blog its a good 1 and it should prove to many how these kids really do get along.

Do you know who is covering boys Lax this yr.

Thanks again for a great season of coverage.

  111. suffern

REAL DEAL.. you are 100% correct.. and if anyone disputes this I would like them to go to a hockey game/practice at any of the rinks.. i don’t care if it’s varsity or mites.. so go to some event and just look at the cars in the parking lot.. says a lot.

  112. Mountie fan

Good insight Real Deal. At least this is true in the lower part of the state.

  113. mchink6

    Right on Real Deal.

Mr. McNeil..good analysis of why hockey thrives in some schools and not in others. A perfect example of why the power leagues and school mergers are vital to preserve Section 1 hockey overall interest.

I know a lot of posts knock the lower leagues and merged teams, but they are important in keeping the sport in the spotlight as one of the major HS sports. If only the wealthy schools could compete and play hockey, we may be down to just a handful of schools playing. Do you think there is a lack of hockey coverage now? Well, with less schools playing the coverage may be down to the bowling and skiing level…for instance you could say goodbye to this blog if only say 10 schools had hockey teams.

An earlier post had mentioned disbanding league 5. What is happening there. Are more teams being lost or will these teams be absorbed in a re-shuffled 4 division power league? Please share any info you might have on this..

  114. Starship trooper

Hockey is unique and time, money and access are all important. As Real Deal pointed out, prior to Brewster rink there wasn’t any hockey in Northern Westcheter/Putnam. Now there are at least 9 teams that call Brewster home (Brewster, Mahopac, Yorktown, Fox Lane, JJay, Carmel, Lakeland, Greeley, Kennedy). The rinks drive a growth in the travel programs which drive interest in the younger kids which eventually fuels the HS game. The youngsters that started at 5, 6, 7 years old when Brewster rink opened are just now getting into their HS years. The last point ro keep in mind here is how the talent is randomly distributed based on where people live..Mahopac and Carmel for example are next door to each other…..The talent difference at the team level comes down to a handful of players, not the thousands in each district….Hockey certainly is very different from football or basketball in this regard.

Would also be interested in any news on League4 / League5 comment made in an earlier posting…....

Does anyone know when the league setups are done for next year? Before this school year ends or early next school year?

  115. Proud Parent

From what our coach anounced at the end of the year dinner was as follows:

    League 5 disbanded

League 4: absorbs Carmel, Nyack and Tappan Zee and also picks up New Rochelle which is dropping down

League 3: Picks up Pawling and ETB, loses New Ro

League 2: gains Scarsdale and loses Rye to League 1

He mentioned this had to be approved by the Ad’s and that league 4 was going to have 9 teams now.

  116. Rye Tea

    Real Deal,

What is your problem!? Why do you always feel the need to attack Rye? Are you bitter because you can’t afford to live there or are you just angry because Rye beat up on your precious team? Either way it’s time to get over it because you send very petty and extremely immature…and THAT IS THE REAL DEAL!

  117. rye tea...

its comments like that that remind me why i thank god my children arent raised in westchester.
go join Connecticut and take Long Island with you

  118. Rye Tea

If you’ll notice rye tea… Real Deal was the one to make a derogatory mention of money first in an earlier post.

  119. suffern

I cannot understand what the problem is with what real deal said about $ and hockey. it is 100% correct.. he didn’t say anything bad about anyone.. rye tea: i have no idea what you are talking about.. comments like what? and how did he attack RYE? you must be nuts.. i have read it 3 times now and cannot see what the heck you are talking about

  120. rye tea...

Why do you always feel the need to attack Rye? Are you bitter because you can’t afford to live there or are you just angry because Rye beat up on your precious team?-Rye Tea

this is absolutely disgusting because A) how can you blindly and viciously attack his or her family income with such an arrogance? B)and…Rye didnt beat up on many teams…they edged teams in lower leagues and got pounded by better teams (ie-MW 5-1? 5-2?, Suffern 5-1) you couldnt ‘buy’ a win against better team that “cant afford” to live there.

  121. Starship trooper

Thanks for the info Proud Parent.

  122. FP40

rye tea… that’s pretty self-righteous to claim you can raise your kids better than WC parents and pretty dumb to make a generalization due to one person’s comments. your making good points. don’t cut yourself down by making needless attacks like that.

  123. rye tea...

no youre right, but what i meant was that that particular westchester parent made comments leading me to believe that he or she truly feels that they are better than someone simply because they happen to live in westchester. then said individual went on to bring money into the equation. real deal with bm brought it in, but in a different way. Rye Tea was using it as like an insult

  124. The Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

How funny is it that someone from Rye gets upset because I stated that you do need some money, and a car (yes believe it or not some of us po folks still use the cab and bus to get around) for your kid to play hockey (this is a fact…not an opinion). The price of 1 child playing hockey on travel is very expensive (for most of us, maybe not for mr. and mrs. hoity toity), nevermind if you have more than 1 playing. Little league, and basketball and football is a small fraction of what hockey is. Oh and also soccer is cheap in comparison. Then this self righteous egomaniac states the following “Are you bitter because you can’t afford to live there”. Can you get more snobby, and arrogant just because you live in a very very wealthy town? PS, you better get junior all the SAT courses and high paid tutors now or else god forbid he or she may have to go to a STATE COLLEGE!!!! OMG, and they will have to be with riff raff and people who don’t belong to yacht clubs…OMG. LOL. PPS your school is named after a rock :) Lighten up clown will ya.

  125. yes

real deal you are again correct.. and for rye tea. .. you are an idiot..

  126. Hello

    Hey Rye Tea,
Boy you really exposed yourself for what you are. I think real deal was just stating that it is an expensive sport and towns like yonkers have a tough time with it because alot of them can’t afford to play it, or come from single family homes etc. Rye is where you live….it is not WHO YOU ARE. You are a human being…no better or worse than the rest of us. Even those of us that live in Peekskill, New Rochelle, Mt. Vernon, Spring Valley, The Bronx etc.
PS how did a high school blog turn in to some type of socio-economic discussion?

  127. scarsdale

i am from scarsdale and i think that rye tea’s comments were disgusting and that person had no right to go where he went. This is about hockey and there is no need for personal insults like that.

  128. why does it matter

Why does it matter where you are from? Is Scarsdale all mighty in the decision making?

  129. how about this

lets all stop whining! Lets leave it all at what a great year its been of section 1 hockey. We will wait until next year and let the kids do all the playing on the ice. Lets not forget these are kids were all talking about here! And Lets not forget what a year its been for section 1. 2 regional champion winners. Outbracket winners. 2 teams representing the elite 8 ( final 4 for D1 and D2)6 Div 1 All State Players!

  130. rye tea...

Im not “Rye Tea”...so i get confused who youre all talking about

  131. Hockey 10580

Real Deal is absolutely making inflamatory remarks about RYE when he said and I quote

“Hey off topic. Who was the Rye big wig who got to put that game on cable? I bet if they lost, that tape would never have been aired. Pretencious.”

    What a JERK!

  132. Hey Dan

I think it’s time to close down the Blog until say September. It’s a shame that the all county, etc. won’t be out for a few weeks, but I’m sure this blog has gone where no blog has gone before. “Kirk Out”

  133. fanotgame

Great job Section 1 (and Section 1 region CHSHL) hockey players, coaches, fans and media. Keep the passion for the sport.

Predictions for next years playoff final 4 teams:

    Section 1 D1-

    Suffern
    Mamaroneck
    Mahopac
    North

White Plains could be in the mix

    Section 1 D2-

    Jay
    Rye
    Pelham
    Brewster

Yorktown, on the enrollment bubble as a D1/D2 team, could be in the mix in either division. Ossining’s young guns could make some noise.

    CHSHL

    Iona
    Stepinac
    Farrell
    Fordham

Section 1 D1 and D2 winners have a good shot at a return trip to Utica, especially if they get to host the reginal playoff. Section 1 will continue to get more statewide recognition.

Iona will be the CHSHL favorite and could wrestle the state title from St Joe’s.

  134. just a fan

Wow..really going out on a limb with those predictions, huh?

  135. suffern

I am going to go out on a limb and predict suffern as state champs.. you got the hebrew hammer line, Hill, shore and goetz second line…, defense: ojeda, conklin, mccarron, norwin.. and of course natoli.. can’t see how they would not be a fovorite to win it all

  136. fanotgame

    Suffern,

I agree you guys are the favorites. But, MW will be close behind. If the brackets work out, it would be nice to see a downstate D1 final.

  137. Starship trooper

Stepinac JV is already lining up scrimmages vs the Sabres to get used to the tough competition upstate.

  138. Mountie fan

“Hill, shore and goetz second line?” I think Hill is the only shoe in for the second line at this point. Ojeda will probably continue to play both O and D unless absolutely needed as strictly D.

  139. suffern

who would you say would be on the second line with hill

  140. Ron Burgundy

Where is the pic of the Stepinac JV team sitting with the New Jersey Devils Pro Team?

    YOU STAY ELITIST RYE TEA…..BAG!

  141. jc

Blog still here? C’ya next year people. Where are all the spring blogs? I think this blog has burned out now that the season is long over.

  142. Mountie fan

“who would you say would be on the second line with Hill?”

Possibly Ojeda if he plays both ways, and,.........

I’ll wait and see who has growth spurts over the summer. I’m told there are some very talented kids coming up who really hustle.

  143. EMPIRES?

who from section 1 has a decent shot at getting on the team??

  144. Mountie fan

Yes, I am a self absorbed parent who spends his time on a high school hockey website trying to inflict my personal prejudices and opinions on the masses. I admit I have no real life and thus spend time here trying to strike out at kids and pass myself off as an expert on Suffern hockey when I am just a parent who spends too much time on high school websites.

I really have no idea what I am talking about and most of my comments are made with the intention of trying to influence people and put down kids to make myself feel better. I acknowledge I have self interest involved here and want to control Suffern hockey but i can’t because the coaches won’t let me run the program, so i try to from here. That makes sense, right? I also love to mention certain kids names and push them, and i like to try and put down others. I am a grown man. Look at me, look at me. You should see me at syracuse.com I really like to talk there.

  145. The Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

Is calling the 2nd line the “hebrew line” not anti-semetic? Someone needs to go to sensitivity training. The fact that you even mention the kids religion is somewhat disturbing.
And who the hell cares what line anyone plays on Suffern next year? Imagine if all the parents werre that absorbed in this that they think that everyone wants to hear them pontificate who will or should be on first line and second line next year? Can we please get a representative from Carmel to guess what their first line will be? How about Nyack? Mamaroneck? etc. Clam up already about who will be on what line. Suffern has the coach of the year, he knows where to put the best players…and if your kid is on 4th line…deal with it please…and don’t deal with it by calling up the coaches, the A.D. the superintendent.

  146. OY VEY

Bill, it’s actually the 1st line, and it is just kids blogging- lighten up the world has enough serious problems-this is not one of them!

  147. WHAT!!!

HOW CAN ANYBODY WITH HALF OF A BRAIN SAY THAT THE “HEBREW HAMMER LINE” IS AN ANTI-SEMETIC STATEMENT?? GIVE ME A BREAK.. WHAT IS NEGATIVE ABOUT THAT.. REAL DEAL.. YOU REALLY DISAPPOINTED ME WITH THAT ONE..

  148. Yo

You are all nap headed hos
