Does this thing still work?

The league schedules for the 2007-2008 season have been posted on the Section 1 website, as some readers have already noticed. That doesn’t surprise me as much as the fact that people are still checking the ice hockey blog. Our traffic crashed so drastically when the link was taken down that I pretty much stopped posting. Apparently a lot of folks have the site bookmarked and have been checking back, though, which is nice.
The interesting thing I see on the schedule is Yorktown and Rye Town/Harrison swapping leagues. I knew Scarsdale was going to move down to League 2 and Rye was going to move up to League 1, but Yorktown moving down and RT/H moving up was a surprise.
Rye Town/Harrison finished fourth out of six teams in League 2 last season. They don’t seem like the hottest up-and-coming program vying for a League 1 berth. I would say Yorktown, Brewster, White Plains, and maybe even Fox Lane are going to be in better shape than the Titans next season.
I haven’t called anyone about this yet, because I’m still doing my summer thing and doing my fall season preparations. But my guess would be that Yorktown felt like moving down for next season, and Rye Town/Harrison was the only League 2 team that was willing to come up to replace them.
I’ll sort it out eventually. It’s not exactly a page 1 scandal, but what else do I have to do with hockey right now?

Dan, are you sure its RT/H thats moving? I see Rye NECK, is there a difference? Maybe Rye Neck recruted a few ringers.
Dan, are you sure its RT/H thats moving? I see Rye NECK, is there a difference? Maybe Rye Neck recruted a few ringers.
And for what its worth, Brewster and White Plains should be League 1 and stop wussying (new word) around and play with the big boys.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure it’s Rye Town/Harrison (which is Rye Neck, Blind Brook, and Harrison). A couple of people have told me it’s them.
And actually, after reviewing the roster from last year, the Titans won’t be bad this season. They bring back starting goalie Sean McKinney and defenseman Kyle Kegan, among other memorable players from last season. They lost 6-2 to Clarkstown North in last year’s sectionals, which is pretty respectable, but it remains to be seen whether they can honestly compete all season with League 1.
Of course, they did beat Rye once last season, and Rye ended up finishing ahead of John Jay and Pelham. So maybe Rye Town/Harrison will end up in the top half of League 1.
Dan, we all missed you during the Empires as the hockey coverage in the Journal News and the blogs was just awful.
Dan, don’t ever leave us like that again. You are the MVP of this space. Hope your summer was great, now lets get back to work here. No one cares about football, track or xcountry….
I’ve had some time on my hands lately and noticed a few things looking at the hockey schedules:
League 1 – Rye Town (Rye Neck /Harrison/ Blind Brook) is moving up along with Rye. 8 teams
League 2 – Yorktown and Scarsdale move down to League 2. 6 teams
I’m not sure what else is going on. These rest is speculation
League 3 = Eastchester jumps up from League 5 to League 3 and joins Pawling which moves up from League 4. 8 teams
Leagues 4 & 5 merge into League 4 with 8 teams. Some teams in League 4 may also play a home and away series with three League 3 teams.
The strangest thing is that there must be a typo as BLIND BROOK HS HAS 2 GAMES SCHEDULED – one vs. Pawling and the other against Pleasantville.
Wow – welcome back Dan and everybody!
That’s interesting – lots of changes taking place this year. So Yorktown and Scarsdale are out of League 1, and Rye and Rye Town/Harrison are in League 1. My guess is if there was a League 2 team that SHOULD go to League 1 it’s White Plains. They’ve been a very good League 2 team for years now and have seen John Jay, now Rye and Rye/Town Harrison pass them for League 1. Oh well.
This year should be interesting. So many questions to be answered.
There is Suffern at the tippy top, then there’s everyone else…
After having lost SO MUCH, will Clarkstown North remain a power this year?
Will Mahopac and Mamaoroneck continue to have regular season success, but continue to fail to reach the Section Final game?
How will the new League 1 teams adapt?
Anyone care for some early bird predictions?...
Hockey fan….Mahopac reached the Section final game 3 years ago when they knocked out North. How soon we seem to forget that.
Mamaroneck vs. Suffern in the Final
Not only will Suffern win the Section, they will finally win States as well. Loaded with O, D and the best G in the state. The only question is…will they go 31-0?
Shame on White Plains for not stepping up to the plate and into League 1. How can WP let a former League 4 team (RT/H) jump over them into 1. Why? So they can hang a banner that they won League 2? WHO CARES??? The only thing that matters is who wins the Section. My guess is that they are afraid to play the strong teams so their kids can’t load up on points.
Howie should be fired if he can’t take the heat. And Brewster is a very close 2nd for that matter.
Whoa, whoa, whoa…..it’s August. Can we maybe wait until the leaves change before we start calling for coaches to be fired?
And I don’t think it’s particularly shameful to stay in League 2 unless you’re clearly going to badly overpower everyone in that league. White Plains doesn’t strike me as that type of team.
I’m personally glad that competition in League 2 should be good in this coming season, just like it was last season. You’ve got WP, Brewster, Yorktown, and Fox Lane, plus Ossining and Mount Pleasant. The race for that league’s championship will be relevant and newsworthy. That’s all I ask.
Dan,
I ws a little puzzled after reading the comments scolding White Plains for not moving up to League 1. They were a very strong team but did not win the League so who cares if they stay put.
You then commented on how League 2 should be good this year (I agree) and include Ossining as part of the competition in League 2. This is where the headscratching and scolding should begin. In reviewing the schedule, it appers that Ossining STAYS IN LEAGUE 3 and simply plays four games against League 2 opponents – WP, Scarsdale, Fox Lane and Yorktown.
Ossining was very strong last year – did they lose the heart of their team to graduation – is this why they remain in League 3?
Answered my own question on Ossining – They probably did not move up after winning League 3 because Ossining had 11 Seniors on their 21 player team last year.
You know what? You’re right. I quickly scanned the schedule thinking that it was only league games that were listed, and when I saw Ossining playing White Plains and those other teams I figured they had moved up.
It makes a lot more sense for them to stay in League 3 after losing 11 guys (and every starter, I believe).
Whoa…hold on there. EVERY team loses guys EVERY year. Every team loses a stud every year including the League 1 teams. You don’t see them jumping ship (except for this year with SHS and YHS). And for what its worth, SHS has taken its share of poundings over the years but Coach M sucked it up and stayed. Yorktown is a joke for moving down and should be embarrassed that they hardly lose anyone and decided to bolt.
Anything past league 2 is a joke anyway…Level 3-4 hockey is like watching paint dry. Sure you have a kid or 2 who can play but overall, its terrible hockey.
I applaud teams like Rye (who loses Sec 1 player of the year) yet makes the jump to 1. Good for them. And for RT/H to make the jump is more extreme and great for them also. For long time established teams like WP to not want to play with the big boys, thats a travesty. They have Encarnacao and Sigona coming back (as far as I know) and they are as good a 1-2 punch as anyone around.
Is it November yet?
Don’t count the wins before they play the games. That’s why they play the games. And mathematically a team like Suffern for example, can’t play more than 30 games total.
I don’t think there a team in league 1 ,that can touch Iona Prep .this year.
I personally think you’re crazy, but I would really like to see that game this year (Iona Prep and Suffern). Iona might match up better with Mamaroneck this season.
mamaroneck team is to slow.Iona prep first to lines are to fast.
Would somebody update us on where the top players from Rockland who either graduated or are leaving to play prep or junior hockey are playing during the upcoming season?
just a fan- that is wonderful, now there is no need to worry about a league 1 team scheduling against Iona Prep, so the league 1 teams can just go about their business of trying to win the section and advance to the states. Thanks for saving alot of blog space about how Iona destroyed all the league 1 teams. You have not only told us the outcome, but have probably become the 07-08 team to love.
This just in….. We can cancel the season before it starts; Iona is too good. See you next year, hopefully. Tough luck Suffern…lmao
Stepinac JV team is better than Iona’s varsity.
One would think, but ‘just a fan’ seems to think Iona can take them. Forgrt Iona vs. Suffern, maybe channel 12 or 19 will pick up a Iona varsity-Stepinac JV game. The only place that could probably hold the crowd would be MSG
who has two top lines ,as good as Iona. not stepinac, fordham, suffern or mamaroneck. the top players from Iona all play aaa or junior .to good for the rest of those teams.
Why keep bringing up Iona or Fordham where they can recruit players? Who gives a damn? They cant compete for the Section title so stop with that crap. No one cares. Its the small PP syndrome here. Relax.
Just a fan, one word: SUFFERN, that’s who.
Iona has one player and he dosen’t like to get hit and is afraid to go into the corners.
didnt iona prep lose to like scarsdale or some joke team last year?
suffern was nasty last year…and will be better this year with natoli, salt, ojeda, conklin all stepping up their games to a higher level than last year.
suffern’s second line could beat Iona….but theyd probably lose to stepianac jv…even the will the self proclaimed brickwall fergeuson couldnt stop the mighty stepianac jv offense.
im up im up…biggest pick of the draft, 5th pick, 6th round…suffern hockey…..CHAMPIONSHIP!
Iona will be unbeatable. The players moving up are awesome, added the returners, nobody will be able to match the speed.
Dan, what do you think about North Rockland returning all of its players except the goalie after going 8-9 last season and playing a tight game against Scarsdale in last years playoffs.
North Rockland got beat by Scarsdale 6-0 last year in the playoffs. In terms of “playing a tight game”, not sure what you mean there. But that said, they’re not too bad, they have a couple decent players but not sure if they can compete with League 1 teams. To be a League 1 team, the most consistent asset you could have is a great goalie, which is what Suffern, Clarkstown North, etc. have had for years. Now here’s the question, if Suffern’s Natoli or North’s McIndoe was the goalie for North Rockland, would they dominate League 3? My guess is they’d be right at the top…
saw natoli let in 12 goals the other night in a college league playoff game at sporto against the best team who had 5 recent former c-north players on it. his 1st line suffern D was missing that game—without them guess he couldn’t withstand the pounding of pucks against him—hope suffern’s D this year is as good as last year—D is the key!!!
with Natoli moving the net as often as he does to prevent a goal from the other team, they would of scored at least 16 goals on him that night!
Natoli looked pretty good at the empires. He outplayed the other goalie on the team. If he had played, HV would have beat central and got a silver.
Iona will be unbeatable in the chsl. I also don’t think that there is a team in section 1 that can beat them. Didn’t suffern back out of a game with Iona last year. Iona doesn’t recruit players . All the good players want to go there. Fordham ,mite have 3 players this year and no brickwall in goal.
last year’s Clarkstown North team could of beat Iona, hands down! and if Matt Willows, the best player in the state, wasn’t leaving for Prep School this year, they’d beat Iona this year too probably…
And I know I know, you can come back and say North tied Fordham Prep last year 7-7, but the only reason North tied Fordham Prep was because (1) they started their backup goalie (starter was resting up to play rival Suffern a couple days later) and (2) with a 7-4 lead with 3 minutes to go in the game, they pulled their backup goalie and put in the 4th string goalie – a tiny freshman – who was nervous receiving his first real playing time and gave up 3 goals… only dumb moves by North coach allowed Fordham Prep to think they were on the same level as North last year…
North played really awful defense in front of that freshman goalie after the first goal on him, to be fair. They stopped purusing the puck and packed in around him, and he couldn’t see a thing.
where is willows going to prep
Iona’s players don’t have to go to prep school… we are already there. Everyone that counts on the roster is a top level junior player. The biggest problem will be hopefully avoiding game conflicts. We’ve skated all summer and are primed and redy to go.
Iona has the best player in both chsl and section 1. p.s to (Tie Domi ) he goes into the corners. maybe you will be there ,watching him go around you.
good point fan and the other forwards not to far behind.
anyone want to take a shot in the dark and guess the seedings/brackets in Sec 1 Div 1 playoffs this year? how about at least the top 4 seeds or guess the section semifinal matchups?
I was just thinking about that. Top 8:
1. Suffern
2. Mamaroneck
3. Clarkstown North
4. Mahopac
5. Rye Town/Harrison
6. Yorktown
7. White Plains
8. Scarsdale
with Clarkstown South, Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville, North Rockland, Pearl River, and Lakeland/Panas filling it out to 13 total teams.
Word is that Meola is out at Yorktown. They are looking for a replacement. Wow.
Dan,
I suggest a seperate blog for the CHSL that way we all don’t have to read all this garbage about how great these teams are. No one cares about a minor league playing against weak competition sprinkled with a few good players. This type of hockey is unwatchable. It’s bantam level at best.
Dan..referring to your Div.1 predictions…I don’t believe Pearl River is a Div.1 team, however, they will be good and a threat in D2.
I’m one step ahead of you, Fact Checker. Not only is Pearl River not D1 (don’t know what I was thinking of on that one), Yorktown isn’t either. I hear they’re moving down this year, not only to League 2, but to Division 2 because of enrollment size.
So it would actually go:
1. Suffern
2. Mamaroneck
3. Clarkstown North
4. Mahopac
5. Rye Town/Harrison
6. White Plains
7. Scarsdale
8. Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville
9. Clarkstown South
10. North Rockland
11. Lakeland/Panas
If Mount Pleasant makes the playoffs, they will be the No. 8 seed. But since League 2 looks pretty strong and one of the Ice Cats’ best players is starting the season with like a 120 game suspension (exaggeration), I’m not going to assume anything. They have an uphill battle.
I also need to make a few calls and find out if all the combined teams are staying as they were last season. They tend to swap around a lot.
Tie, I guess you werent recruted by Iona. This is a HS hockey blog. It doesn’t say anything about what league your in.
Dan – I think that looks about right in Div. 1. With Rye Town/Harrison moving to League 1, and Yorktown and Scarsdale dropping. it will certainly be interesting to see how they all pan out in the mix. Also, Clarkstown North looks to be in rebuilding mode for the next couple years, so it will be interesting to see how they fare as well. North has a lot of good little talent a few years away from the Varisty level that will revive them to powerhouse status, but still, that’s a few years away…
Dan – just a suggestion throwing it out there, but it would be a really cool blog subject f someone can do a research project or something into the “Best Future Teams in Sec 1”... the project would be based on looking at the current Modified teams for each school and evaluating the talent there, and possibly working with the Saints and Clarkstown Capitals to see where the best players on those Mite, Squirt and PeeWee teams will be playing at which high school. The purpose of this project would be to see which high school program has the brightest future based on the current Modified team, as well as Travel Teams (if thats possible). Might be asking a little too much, but I think that would be a pretty cool blog subject… just a suggestion!
refresh my memory – do the top 3 teams get a first round bye in the sectionals?
Farm Systems – I don’t think its a great idea to write articles, critiques, or blogs on 5th grade athletes.
Who knows anyhow where they will end up going to HS. Lots of youth travel teams in this area are stocked with jersey, upstate and even NYC kids. And lots of kids in Section 1 area play there youth hockey in the Jersey district.
The little paragraphs that sometimes appear in the Journal News “Recreation” section are sufficient coverage for this age group.
Does anyone know how Pelham , Fox Lane, and those schools will be as the season starts? Graduate loss etc.?
Thanks, giving Iona some pretty big skates to fill. How brutal will this blog be (if) when they lose their 1st, & ......... game. Coyote Ugly
well who does Stepinac or fordham have on there team this year . stepinac has a goalie and alot of nobody players. fordham has maybe 3 players of a high level and no goalie. Iona has 10 of the top players around.
There’s not anybody around that can touch us. Facts are facts, please dont getmad at us. We have prob the top defenseman in the state as well as one of the top forwards as well as some decent sophs who can hold there own with anyone.
People allways don’t like the best, how about just play, not have teams back out of games. Then you can talk if you win or be quiet when you lose.
can someone give me the link to section 1’s website.. i want to check out the schedules but can’t find the site..
back to the rankings.. sad to say it but i don’t see CN 3rd.. i think they are going to have a really tough year.. 4th or maybe even 5th..
North will be in rebuilding mode for a couple years… but they’ll hold steady in League 1 and they’ll be back up there as a powerhouse with Suffern in like 3 years…
Who are some of the top returning players from each team this year?
salt, hiller, ruthberg, natoli, ojeda, conklin, mccarron, norwin, shore, hill, goetz, modica, hawley, do i smell state champs..?????!!!!!!
http://www.swboces.org/athletics
i love how all these suffern fans are automatically saying they are the state favorites just because they only lost 2 players. Suffern will be a state contender, but its not fair to call them the state favorite just yet. You’re the Section favorite right now, thats it! concentrate on that first!
How about concentrating on one game at a time
whos fordhams and stepinacs returning top players?
It really doesn’t matter who fordam or stepanic has coming back;they won’t be able to compete wit the big dawgs.Iona just has to much from goal out.
i don’t think suffern fans are forgetting about sections or that it is a long season that doesn’t even start for 3 months.. but i do feel suffern has a great shot this year but then again a lot can happen from now until march..
Key returning players for Clarkstown North:
Chris McIndoe – Junior, Goalie
Jake Shuman – Junior, F (not sure if he is still going to be playing for North)
Kevin Zipkin – Senior, F
Ryan Byrnes – Senior, D
Steve Williams – Senior, D
Dan Cincotta – Senior, D
Mike Kapnick – Sophomore, F
Spencer Cohen – Sophomore, F
going to be a tough year for McIndoe!!!! we will see just how good he really is this year..
i think McIndoe will be fine – experienced D around him – the big question is the offense…
i would agree with you “suffern” but if you were to make a pre-season prediction putting them as the favorite to win states this year would not be out of the question..
You Suffern people are beginning to sound like the Iona Poop people-let them play the games-then pound your chests.
oh god, don’t say that Dang!!!!
There’s more responses on the hockey blog during the off-season than there are on some of the other blogs mid-season.
Being a Section 1 fan, I agree with Dan’s latest D1 rankings (maybe switch North and Mahopac). And Suffern is alone on top by a pretty good margin. I wonder what he thinks for D2? Jay (although it is rumored they lost some players to prep school), Rye and Pelham should be there. Yorktown could be in the mix. They have a strong goaltender and enough skaters to make it interesting. Not unlike last year’s Rye Garnet team. As for the CHSHL, its time for past Stepinac JVers to put it together and give Iona some competition. Iona has to be the favorite. Solid goalie, very, very deep at forward and enough good blueliners. Suffern vs. Iona would be a marquee match up (which I really hope gets scheduled and, more importantly, played hard). Iona’s fast and physical forwards versus Sufferns D and goaltending. Whoever said Iona has only 1 decent player wasn’t watching the Empire State games (pretty high level hockey) where each of Molinaro, King and McCabe played well for Hudson Valley and Lopez for NYC. Perhaps Iona’s most dynamic player would have been there except he was recovering from a serious leg injury. Its really too bad the nearby Catholics and Publics don’t play together in Sec 1 for hockey. Throw Iona and Stepinac in League 1 this year and you would have a very interesting season.
Dan,
Now that Monroe Woodbury (Section 9) is playing DI and thus eliminating the outbrackett for DI state playoffs, does DII get the outbrackett option for its Section runners up?
Same old story. Why would a Sect 1 team care about playing a team from CHSL. Playing top upstate teams is where Sec 1 teams want to be. You chose to be in the CHSL-go play in it.
suffern had conklin, natoli, ojeda, and salt on empires
Yes, I saw that. But, the aforementioned Iona players got lots and lots of ice time and were involved in some crucial goals. With the exception of Natoli’s time in net, I am not sure that was the case for the other Mountie players. That does not mean the Mountie skaters are not fine players. They are. The Empire coaches had a bundle of talent to work with, including boarding school players and the Monroe Woodbury crew. I am not a CHSHL fan per se. I am not related to anyone playing in that league. Really a youth hockey fan. Just pointing out that both Section 1 and CHSHL have some pretty good players. And that Iona and Suffern are the cream of the crop in their respective leagues and should try to schedule a game.
Stepanac?
You must be kidding to even mention them in the same breath as Iona. They don’t have, never had, or ever will have the talent, class,or ability to call themselves a prep or step on the ice against Iona. We may play Suffern if they don’t back out, but we only play the others because of the league we are stuck in. Our prep schedule is the real deal.
Not for nothing but the catholic league over all is not very good and I saw the IP guys at empires and yeh C.King scored a few times but to tell you the truth he really doesn’t skate that well (NO WAY IS HE GOING TO MICHIGAN TO PLAY HOCKEY) and McCabe was invisible so don’t even mention him as one of the best in the State not even close.
For those who complained so much about Suffern cancelling last yrs game it had nothing to do with not wanting to play Iona (which Suffern beat 7-0 the yr before)it had to do with playing 4 games in a week and all league games at that,so get off the garbage that they were afraid to play them ,if they did play it would have been another Suffern romp.
Didn’t Suffern pound Iona 7-0 last time they played.
Thanks fair, you beat me to the previous game.
your very welcome, and they had all these superstars the yr before to,so what happened.
Just for Fanotgame, my thoughts on the D2 playoffs:
1. John Jay
2. Rye
3. Pelham
4. Yorktown
5. Brewster
6. Fox Lane
7. Ossining
8. Pawling
9. Pearl River
10. Greeley
Just a guess. That top five is pretty tight, and we’ll see about Fox Lane.
Random thought – I think there should be a tournament called the “Brewster Cup” held at Brewster Ice Arena every year for the D2 teams that play their home games there. That would be an interesting one in this upcoming season, with John Jay, Yorktown, Brewster, and Fox Lane. It would have to be D2 only, because Mahopac would probably win most years otherwise.
I had it exactly the same.
The playoff seeding questions are not as tough as the league standings. For instance, in League 1, will Rye Town/Harrison necessarily finish last? Can John Jay or Rye finish ahead of Mahopac or Clarkstown North? Am I underestimating Pelham by not mentioning them until now?
It may not matter to the post-season, but these are tough questions about how teams will match up next season.
What does everyone think of Yorktown? They dropped down and lost their coach. They played some good hockey at times, but didn’t do that everygame(eg. John Jay 11-1 and others). They did well last year against D2 by beating Pelham twice,FL,RT-Harrison,and tieing Rye.They may not be that deep, but they have good returning players with Matranga,Parra,Cabriele, and Bonitatibus. In addition, they return Frankie Dimaggio who will be one of the best players in D2 when the winter rolls around.
The best downstate game last year was Clarkstown North vs. Monroe-Woodbury, where North beat MW 4-2, thus being MW’s only loss last year. That was a GREAT game of hockey. Suffern-Iona would be probably the closest equivalent to that matchup this year…
Best game last yr you have to go with Suffern’s 3-2 against CN in Sec. final or the OT game during the season.
Dan
A comment on the ‘Brewster Cup’, for the past 2 years, Fox Lane has hosted a mini-tournament right after Christmas called John Mclaughlin, in honor of a former Fox Lane coach who passed away. The four teams are Fox lane, Brewster, John Jay and Pleasantville/Westlake; very close to your suggesstion with only Yorktown missing.
“saw natoli let in 12 goals the other night in a college league playoff game at sporto against the best team who had 5 recent former c-north players on it. his 1st line suffern D was missing that gameâ€â€without them guess he couldn’t withstand the pounding of pucks against himâ€â€hope suffern’s D this year is as good as last yearâ€â€D is the key!!!”
Ha ha ha….you forgot to mention that it was Natoli with none of the first or second line D and none of the first or second line O. They shoulda just had all those 8th and 9th graders sit down and give Natoli a better look at the puck, LOL. Natoli had alot of guts just showing up for that game.
JJCR will be terrible this year. Rodeschini went prep and Ponzo is a siv.
This will be one of the most competitive years in Section 1 at all levels (excluding Suffern games) becuase there is so little dominant talent left.
Brewster and Pawling will be very good this year. Alfonzetti’s name doesnt get mentioned much but he is my preseason pick for player of the year in West/Put.
Yorktown will be cometitive because of Dimag and Parra but thats all they got. The other guys are lax players.
96 posts and its not even September. Hockey lives.
Ponzo went to prep school . . . don’t ask me how. The other JJCR goalie is even worse, not to be mean becuase he is a decent kid. All they have left is Latino, who may not play becuase of his lax future. Alfonzetti has very little backing him up. Who does pawling have?
I would like to hear who everybody thinks the top D2 goalies are. Also, what you think about lesser-discussed teams like Pelham, Rye, Fox Lane, Brewster, etc… Any predictions for D2 seeds or League 2 standings
ouch. I didn’t hear about Rodo transferring. Or Ponzo. If that’s the case, it certainly changes things. Over the course of the first few weeks of the fall season (during which I will be covering volleyball) I’ll try to check in with most coaches and catch up on stuff like that, because I’m feeling very out-of-touch right now.
town, you make a good point about Latino and his lacrosse commitments. I bet it’s pretty frustrating to coach hockey at John Jay and Yorktown due to that. I can’t think of a reason that he wouldn’t play, though. The injury risk is a little overblown (how many bad injuries did we have last season?), and being on a team in the winter is a good way to go into the spring in good shape.
Section1fan, I’ll remember that you were the first one on the Alfonzetti bandwagon.
Brewster-Rye in the section final?
Where did Rodeschini go to Prep and is he going to get play time there.
With everyone talking about Suffern running away with Sec.1,It will be tough to replace ALL-STATE D C.WYNNE who has moved onto College, the D should be ok but they will be lacking speed at that position (except for OJEDA).
What do you think Dan
wow – i thought JJ was going to be decent this year with that good Senior class of Rodo, Ponzo and Latino. Now there’s even a chance Latino wont play, and the question of starting goalie is up in the air. This changes alot for D2…
Rodo went to Kent from what I hear.
The movement of top section 1 players to prep schools seems to be increasing each and every year..While this trend is a good commentary on the quality of the local youth hockey development programs..it will eventually water down the public school hockey pool..
It will not be long before the local catholic schools year-in and year-out will have higher caliber programs than section 1..Why?...because the remaining stronger players (not quite prep school) will want to play together. The private schools allow for this opportunity and they can offer more flexible scheduling against other strong private schools (NJ, CT., etc) in the area.
In the end..the attraction of playing with other strong players and against other quality programs will strenghthen the catholic school leagues..
Tough D-yes it will be tough to replace ALL STATE C WYNNE-he was a big part of the heart and soul of Suffern last year. But don’t forget what they did last year when the lost 3 ALL STATE players from the year before including ALL STATE D Andrew Yorke, the ALL STATE Daniel twins & Rich Castor-which included losing 241 points of offense.
i bet most would agree that natoli is almost the whole suffern team.. what would they ever do if he got hurt or couldnt play for some reason? section champs might be out of the picture..
any of suffern’s first line O or top D pairing would start on any other team in the section.
Conklin, Ojeda
Salt, Hiller, Ruthberg
Natoli
that is a dumb question.. their second line would start on most teams..
They’re lucky the Prep isn’t considered a part of the section because those guys would not have a easy time getting ice time with Iona. Thats not to talk bad about them, its just the facts. One of our coachs played d1 and thinks we have one of the best teams put together for prospects
Who cares
rodo is going to Cantebury this year. personally think its a terrible choice but word has it he isnt really going for hockey, rather to get his grades up.
Alfonzetti has always been an underrated player. Def. one of the top players in the section. Dont forget aobut Encarnaco and Sigona from White Plains. They are up there as well. White Plains has league 2 in the bag with that 1 2 punch. League 1 will go to suffern hands down, they are so consistent with the depth of their bench every year its unreal.
Suffern’s hockey program is one of the best kept programs in any sport in Section 1… little kids from the area start off with clinics at Sport-O taught by some members of the Varsity team. They they play on the Ramapo Saints until they reach Modified then eventually Varisty. So the Varsity team grooms the future. The little kids look up to the Varsity players and strive to become them in the future. Just a great circle of hockey life, a great tradition and great program. Every year, the Varisty and Modified teams are well-stocked… i even hear the Modified team makes cuts
D1 – its Suffern at the tipppy top, then the “field” (Mamaroneck, Clarkstown North, Mahopac, White Plains, etc.)
D2 – no clear cut favorite, as always aka “the field” – John Jay, Brewster and Rye are probably the favorites.
yes suffern’s modified team has tryouts and kids are cut
sporto just had a cap for kids that was run by the suffern coaches and 4-5 of the varsity players were there everyday to work with the kids from ages 6 to about 13.. you are right there is a reason why suffern has been a powerhouse for so long.. its not luck.. i wonder how many clarkstown kids are at the palisades center with 6 year old kids during their summer vacation.. ?
i agree… theres absolutely no reason why both Clarkstown North and South can’t do the same program as Suffern does at Palisades. With the Palisades Center in Clarkstown’s backyard, Varisty kids from both North and South should be holding free clinics for the local kids and helping to groom the future. Especially with North, being the fact that they’ve been so great in recent years, little kids from the North area should be WANTING to play for this team when they are older. Clarkstown should def. be taking more advantage of having a rink in their backyard…
Alot of comments are being made about Iona Prep. Yes they have a good team, but many of the players are playing travel Hockey that will cause many game conflicts. I don’t know about playing Suffern (Which would be a competitive & Fun game), but I do know that Iona Prep was looking to schedule games against Don Bosco,Brunswick and DelBarton. All three of these schools could easily beat Iona Prep, But I “TIP MY HAT” to Iona Prep because they are looking top play teams outside their league that have the reputation of being high school hockey Power Houses. At least they’re trying to upgrade their program, not like other CHSHL teams that look to beat up on Tier 4 teams.
The only team that really has as many return players coming back is Suffern. If these two teams played each other, I think Suffern would have the edge. Suffern’s defense would be stronger. Each team has stong forards. Salt & Ruthberg for Suffern and King & Molinaro for Iona. Iona Prep probably has the Number one Defensemen in the county with McCabe but Suffern is probably 4 deep in defense with Conklin and Ojeda leading the way. Goalie edge has to go to Suffern with Natoli but Iona has DiMario who one of the stronget goalies in the CHSHL last year. It would be a fun game to watch but I doubt it would ever take place.
All I can say is we’re 3 months away from dropping the puck. Sitback and enjoy. It’s going to be a fun season. Enjoy the kids and enjoy the hockey.
OK who are the top 5 High School Hockey Teams this year?
Who are top players in each section and CHSHL (forwards and Defensemen)?
Goalies?
Goalies: McIndoe,Natoli,Regan,DiMario
Forwards: Conner,DiMaggio,King Salt,Ruthberg,Encarneo,Eck
Defense: Conklin,Ojeda,McCAbe,Rodgers
Indeed Suffern has it made over there. Here in Putnam/West, all the good kids from various high schools either play at brewster or WSA. Therefore, all the kids are mixed and cant really develop a high school team that way. This is one of the reasons suffern consistantly develops superior lines, they play together for years and years. Its actually a HUGE HUGE HUGE advantage for Coach Shelling in that he sees all his players in one big group from the time they learn to skate. The other HS coachs are at a big disadvantage because their kids are all over the place. North has an advantage also in that they use the Pallisades to develop their kids. Its true that Pelham and Mamaroneck and White Plains also develop teams but some of their better players play at Brewster/WSA also. If every team had their own rink to practice on all year round, things might…MIGHT be different. Thats why you really have to tip your cap to teams like Mahopac/JJCR/Yorktown who consistantly have good teams with good players who can compete with the big guys year after year all without the benefit of a true home grown program.
Palisades Mall Rink is being underutilized…
The Mall management is not interested in making the rink into a hockey production unit…They really don’t want it, and barely tolerate it…It’s only there as condition of the mall being built… I’m sure the Mall would prefer it to to be retail shopping..
Clarkstown North’s eight year run of very good teams wasn’t a result of the Mall Rink.. The kids who made this run, Hutchko to Willows, et. al. were either Saints kids or just roller hockey/lake hockey enthusiasts (lets hear it for Congers Lake!)
Only recently has the Mall’s Clarkstown Capitals started to contribute kids to the North and South programs..but especially in the case of North, real help will be a couple of years away.
But clearly the local clarkstown schools (South, North and Nyack) need to work better with this asset right in their own backyard!
A good example would be a small school district like Pearl River with a bustling youth program and hockey instruction. They pick-up whatever ice time they can get from Sport-o or Palisades with the result that they will be a real threat in section 1, D2. They must roster like 25 kids on their Varsity team!
Sport-o-rama is a hockey rink and works hard to be one. And lately they have had to work harder as competition from newer NJ rinks has really hindered the Saints attempts at fielding tier I hockey teams. But the Suffern program greatly utlizes this asset to their advantage and have had 30years to perfect their system..John Orlando built a great foundation.
Clarkstown North
based on the younger players development, how long do you think it will be until North is a power again? this year their modified team was only 8 or 9 kids… any idea how they will be this year?
They had 8 or 9 kids, but most were solid hockey playing kids, definite varsity contributing players of the future.
This years CN team will be good…middle of league 1…would be a resonable expectation. Senior laden defense and good goaltending..Forwards will be underclassmen, a better group if Shuman plays…On paper, a game against Suffern will be tough…but against anyone else, they can win…
There is more quantity of North kids at the peewee and squirt levels and I guess some of the older pee wees will be hitting the modified this year..so that puts the bulk of this group 4 to 5 years away from making a varsity impact..
Clarkstown north is going to get killed. Might have one good defensemen and descent goaltending. But if the goalie is going to face 40+ shots a game, then the outcome is not going to be pretty.
It will take a few years before you see them on top. After this year, watch out for Mamaoneck. They have a modify program, a JV program and a varsity program. hey got killed by graduations the past few years but after this year, they will be the powerhouse.
Who’s coming back for Mamaroneck this year?
What team, outside of Suffern, is going to put 40+ shots on CN?
But I agree with you on Mamaroneck…they have the ability to challenge Suffern in future years..good community support, organized youth program and access to a rink (hommocks).
i can see suffern having a great team for the next 3-4 years.. they have a lot of very good underclassmen coming up.. although this years team might be the best in a long time.. again might.. they haven’t played a game yet.. lets wait and see.
I really don’t think that North will be bad this year – middle of the pack sounds about right – maybe even 3rd place in League 1. Other than Suffern, they have the ability to beat anyone. They still have one of the best goalies in the Section and an experienced, Senior-led defense to protect him. Those 4 Seniors are very good, even though stats don’t show it in the past couple years, thats because they’ve been behind Willows, Shumans, older players, etc. In a good program like North’s, sometimes even decent players have to wait until Senior year to start. So they will have their chance to shine this year now that it is their team. Offense will be the part of the team that will take a step back. It won’t be the mighty, overpowering North offense we’ve seen in recent years, but it will compete for sure, especially if little Shuman returns this year. As for the future, North has good little kids on the Squirt levels that are still 4 or 5 years away from Varsity, so the future looks bright…
I heard that little Shuman is NOT returning,
If shuman does not return…so be it. Thats just part of public school hockey landscape, where the very best players will end-up in prep or a juniors…
This is why the high school programs should have better development programs at the youth level. If you develop 5-10 hockey playing kids per grade, you’ll have a competitive high school team even if the best of those kids end up leaving for prep or juniors..
thats the key – if you have enough bodies per grade, you’ll have a great high school hockey program. Look at Suffern – they develop about that 5-10 players per grade, so even when the best players leave, they have more than enough to restock…
where is little shuman going to go? he isn’t going to prep school or we would have known that by now, and there is no word on him playing junior’s anywhere.. if he doesn’t play for north he might not be playing at all..
i hear hes staying at North, but might just be playing for his travel team
Same subject but with a little different twist…
We all know that prep is a higher level of hockey and I would imagine that some prep schools have nice communities, feelings of school pride, and enthusiastic student bodies…but is there that same prideful and civic feeling as playing for your local high school team?
I know most people will say that juniors lacks that communal atmosphere of high school, but what about prep?
I heard little Shuman will be staying at North this year, NOT playing for North, he will be playing for his travel team only!and is going to Prep next year!
I really hope shuman’s choice not to play for north isn’t just because they aren’t going to be the great team they have been…. that in my opinion would really show a lack of character.. granted if he had other options (prep or junior A) it would be a different story.. what travel team does he play for anyway? capitals?
I would think that prep school’s have a bigger sense of pride than hs.. in hs most kids aren’t great friends with their teamates outside of hockey..once hockey is over they mostly go their seperate ways with their own clicks.. in prep school you live with the kids you play with 24 hours a day.. you don’t come home from practice and see what your other friends are doing friday night..
He plays for the NJ Devils, and he told me that it has nothing to do with the North team. One thing for sure, Little Shuman does not lack CHARACTER! He happens to be an all-around great kid!
Didn’t little Shuman play for the NJ Devils last year. Didn’t seem to prevent him from playing for Clarkstown North high school last year. Other than the obvious-what changed?
All this talk about little Shuman is a little crazy if you ask me, even if he stayed he would not have done anything like last yr simply because he won’t have is brother or the Willows brothers out with him ,CN’s O is going to be lacking big time compared to the last few yrs and little Shuman on his own would not have mattered much.He is playing with the Devils and not returning to CN this yr, and as far as prep he is far from being a prep player that would make a difference at least.
Friend – I didn’t know how he acts was called CHARACTER.
fair, I didnt know that you were a prep school coach, or scout? LOL! Funny how everyone on here KNOWS EVERYTHING! Guess you must be close with him to know how he acts, LOL!
i am going to assume and yes i know why you shouldn’t assume.. but I really believe he isn’t playing for north only because they are not going to be a very good team… his #’s might not be as good as they were last year, for the reasons stated above by “fair” and to me that is very selfish and shows very little character.. his team needs him, and he is leaving them high and dry… now maybe i am 100% wrong but unless i hear some really good reason for him not playing, that has to be the reason.. to the rest of the CN team: forget him you don’t want someone like that on your team..
This conversation is ridiculous..
Public school hockey is filled with talented kids who transfer, or don’t even play for their school…its just the way it is..
People seem to be coming down on him for the same decision dozens of kids make each year…I’ll just assume he has a plan which includes balancing hockey and academics for this year and next year…
it is not a big deal…
to wow, your right, DONT ASSUME! Instead of everyone posting on this board and assuming they know his reasons, why dont you call him and ask him! Mchink is right, from what little shuman has told me! MOVE ON! Pick a new subject
i am on the fence on how i feel about this shuman issue.. maybe he wants to develop his game at a level more on par with prep schools and juniors.. he will not get that at CN..but will playing for the devils..he is playing for their AAA team correct? then again what about the kids depending on him over at CN.??
Thats the problem, there really isn’t anything to talk about yet.. how many times can we say how great suffern is going to be this year…?? what else is there.. ??
LOL
I do know him that’s how I know and so everyone else understands, I have not mentioned on here at all why he is not playing for CN,but I kind of agree with a few people that said its because CN will be weaker than in the past.
you don’t have to be a prep scout or coach to know that at this point he is not prep calibre.. nothing against the kid he is a very good player..but not there yet.. maybe next year but not at this point..
Hey Mountie,
If you watched the Empire games, Natoli didn’t play well. Forget about the Silver medal, If he had played have way descent against the West, they could of won the gold. The other goalie was definitely the better of the two.
I think instead of deleting comments in which people unnecessarily go after high school kids (is it ever necessary?), I’ll just give the comments grades on spelling and grammar. You just got a D+, guy.
Catholic league..
Will Iona have any compettion in the Catholic league? I’m an ex-City kid so I follow this league most closely for football and basketball, but of late I have started looking at it for hockey..
I know Fordham is down this year but what about Farrell or Chaminade? These are good schools with the demographics (money) and athletes to produce good hockey teams..Any sleepers..St. Joseph Sea, Holy Cross?
I’m hoping for an informed answer, not derision because this is a section 1 forum…thnak you..
Iona is considered the team to beat in the CHSHL this coming year. They won the league last year with a young team but lost in the playoff finals in a thrilling best of 3 series against a senior Fordham Prep.Iona has their core of players returning and have a number of incoming strong Juniors,Sophomores and Freshmen that will be able to complement the rest of last years team. Might have two very powerful lines and two additional strong lines. Also have a very strong Goal-tending and Defense.BUT may have alot of game conflicts with the travel hockey players. That could be their downfall?
But you have to be aware of Chaminade,Farrell and Molloy. These three teams are always tough. They all play a very aggressive style of hockey and many of the kids play travel hockey for the Staten Island Moose(Jrs), Applecore(Jrs), Suffolk PAL and Royals(Jrs).
Also, the CHSHL has a new addition to the varsity level. Tier 2 CHSHL Champion, St Edmunds 18-0 Undeafeated) has moved up to Tier 1. They should cause problems throughout the league.
Stepinac will go as far as they can ride their Goalie. Reagan is one of the top goalies in the State but not sure if he’ll be playing all the games because of his committment to Juniors.Time will tell, really surprised that Reagan didn’t go to Prep School!Team will be competitive but not sure about their goal scoring capabilities and their Defense (Young?).
Fordham lost thirteen seniors from last years team and also lost Kevin Clare (Top Defensemen), who I hear is playing for the NJ Hitmen. They (Hitmen) have a rule that they can’t play Juniors and High School hockey. Our top players are McKenzie (D), and Fusco (F). Lost the Brick!
mchink, Overall, the CHSHL will be a very strong league this coming season. Many of the CHSHL players in tier one play travel so most of the schools are able to have two strong lines, which will make most of the games very competitive.Hope this answers your question!
Hey Dan,
At this moment, you have had over 150 bloggers on this site and it’s 3 months until the season begins.
Question” Did the Lacrosse Blog ever have over 150 messages at one time….DON”T THINK SO!! HOCKEY RULES AND DON”T FORGET!
P.S.. Stepinac’c JV team Rocks “NOT”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks CHSHLFan…excellent reporting.
Too bad FP lost the defensemen Clare, I hear he is excellent. But thats the way it works in hockey, top-level talent often takes you out of the high school mix..(of course a lot of good players do remain as evidenced by some of the strong teams seen locally in the last few years..)
Clare is definitely a BIG loss to Fordham. Actually, and I know the Section 1 fans don’t want to hear this, but in my opinion, Clare and McCabe are definitely the “TOP DEfensemen” in the area this year. They remind me of Wynne of Suffern. “TOUGH AS NAILS!
Clare played for the Avalanche the other year and was part of the team that won Nationals. Now he makes the NJ Hitmen and rumor has it that he might go and play for team USA.He was second team ALL-CHSHL last year. McCabe has played for the NJ Devils,Brewster Jrs and last year for Midfairfield who qualified for the Midget nationals. He was first team All-CHSHL lst year.
You have to give credit where credit is due, these two players are powerful and fun to watch. Not many defensemen in Rockland/Westhcester can be compared to these two.
It’s a shame we willn’t be able to watch Clare this coming season for Fordham. At least we’ll get to see McCabe in action.
is it possible that sufferns 1st line will make the whole 1st team all section..??
salt, hiller, ruthberg
conklin, ojeda..
has that ever been done before?
How does Suffern compare to Monroe-Woodbury this year?
I ask only because I don’t know to much about M-W, but presume that many of the top players from both teams played on the empires together..
Are they playing each other this year? Also, when does the Section 1 and Section 9 champ meet in the states?
i don’t think suffern will play MW this year.. they did play them in a scrimmage last pre-season..
Suffern usually plays MW just before the sectionals. Last years game was snowed out.
Anyone with a scouting report on Monroe-Woodbury?
Would they meet the section 1 champ before state-semi’s?
I believe Sect 1 plays Sect 10 (Massena/Canton, etc) in the regionals-maybe 9 plays 2. Winners go to semi’s
Yo,
This is your boy “I Love Him”, aka “He’s Hot” and “I Want That”. Just checking in to let all you people in here know that no one is better at hockey than Zach Salt, one of the best looking kids I have ever seen. If anyone messes with him I will personally kick their ass.
Looks like Suffern is starting to get “BIG HEADS”.
What about : Conner(Mamaoneck),Eck (Rye), Rodgers(Rye), Novick(Harrison), Keagan(Harrison), Latino (JJ), Hennessey (Pelham), DiMaggio (Yorktown), etc…...
A little funny how Brewster gets criticized early in the blog for not moving up but than is not even put in the top 13 teams for next season list. Brewster has moved up from league 4 to league 2 in the past few years. Nobody wants to see what happened to Y-town a few years ago when they jumped up a few leagues too fast and got crushed once they were in league 1. The leagues are designed to promote even play and good competition. Brewster is still looking for a coach for the upcomming season so who knows what is in store for the bears. Berardo’s decision at the end of the season was a smart one when he knew that the future of the program was a shakey one. That’s all aside the fact that Brewster lost 6 seniors last season. Yes, they didn’t do much scoring wise and the team was lead by a junior and freshman but they were good role players that could be hard to replace
Brewster should go back to League 4 where they belong. They will be horrible this year.
Bears Fan…what a brilliant comment! I am guessing that you are the loud-mouthed know-it-all parent that will have no problem walking directly up to the young men who are on that team and say the same comment to them. Put on your skates, get yourself on the ice, and show us how to play hockey!! Oh wait, you can barely walk on solid ground…forget that idea.
wow.. love it.. !!! season didn’t even start yet and it’s getting fun already..
Everyone calm down. We all know that at the end of the season it will be Suffern vs. Mamaroneck in the finals and who really cares about the other minor divisions including the CHSHL.
Hey Calm down,
Why did you have to bring the CHSHL into your analysis. Are you afraid of playing competitive teams? Opps…..I forgot, didn’t Suffern cancel a game against a CHSHL team one day before they were suppose to play….. Real Classy move!
suffern canceled bc they would have had 4 games in 1 week, one against CNorth (a team that played their second string against FP and tied them)..so thats why they canceled on Iona. that and the fact that they touchdowned Iona 7-0 the season before…we all know suffern doesnt like to run up the score so they didnt need a stat boosting game against CHSHL teams last year.
didnt latino graduate
didnt latino graduate? and who is Harrison do they have a team?
#2 Chris Latino from John Jay is now a senior
#3 Get your story straight…..If there is one team that Loves to run up the score it’s SUFFERN.. Suffern has been running up the scores for years! When the Daniel’s were playing and Suffern was killing everyone…Did they ever come off the ice….ANSWER: “NO”.
#4 For a Section one team to cancel a game against the CHSHL is an embarrassment to our League. Should of played the game that way you wouldn’t of had to defend your Teams pride for the past 9 months….....!!!!!! Really looks like Suffern was afraid to play. Was told that Iona had 3 games that week was ready to play. “Amazing isn’t it”
umm no…suffern plays their 3rd 4th and 5th lines for much of the third periods in blowout games..unlike north
also, everyone wants to play suffern…its like the yankees..its so minor league team was begging them for a game and the yankees canceled..i think we can all agree that A-no one would care, and B that the yankees dont want to waist their time playing someone that they have no interest in (and who theyll likely blow out in an exhibition that only means something to the other team
lets not forget..its not like the iona suffern game from the year before was competitive enough to scare suffern away. maybe if IP recovered an onside kick and popped in a few three pointers it would have been a game..
Does anyone know how good Monroe-Woodbury will be this year?
What do they return from last year and are they a legit challenge for a NYS championship (division 1)?
WOW….....Hey Big Heads,
Don’t worry about Iona, “BUT” by the way you’re talking, you sound scared! Watch out for Mamaroneck…They beat you lst year and they are going to beat you this year. You might have Salt but we have Conner. You’re GOING DOWN! LOL
hey dan, ive noticed yorktown has slipped down to league 2 this year. why do u think they did it and what do they have coming back?
we might have salt…and natoli..and ojeda…and conklin…and ruthberg…and hiller…
this whole iona suffern thing is crazy… 2 years ago suffern killed them and now people are saying a year later they were scared to play them.. couldn’t it just be they had a couple of important leauge games that week and thought it would be smart to focus on them rather then to play a game against a team that they killed the year before and wouldn’t mean anything. nobody is saying iona doesn’t have a talented team but honestly the CHSHL is a step down from suffern. They are not prep schools and honeslty are only real powers in football. and i would love to know how many suffern games the guy who said they run up the score has been too.. itis not true and even if it was who cares these aren’t mites…
Suffern has been running up scores ever since the ego maniac Orlando started the program back in the 70’s !
Nobody really cares that much about suffren. We try to give some of the local teams the chance to see where they stand against prep school competition. Nobody says you have to play us, I don’t blame you guys for ducking it. Please don’t try to knock us for being tops in the area. The problem for you guys is the best guys on our team are sophs so were not going away soon.
If you want to talk about scores look at the CN scores against lesser comp and see how the best players would get 7 or 8 points a game against them,Suffern rarely blows anyone out even when they had the Twins so get your facts straight.
The Ip issue is amazing to me consdering Suffern blew them out 2 yrs ago ( with McCABE ,King ,I still don’t believe he is going to Michigan to play Hockey) and plays Upstate powers each yr why would they be affraid to play a team in a not so competitive league,Maybe Iona should expand out of the league they are in and play better comp and stop telling everyone how good you are and that your the best in the area when most of the teams in the league would get wrecked by good squirt travel teams, when you play the same team 5 or 6 times in a league with only 3 or 4 teams you can’t keep telling everyone your the best around.
IP 10
Forgot to add, nobody really cares about the Prep due to the league your in like I said above not much Comp and to let you know if you played actual PREP SCHOOLS you would probably discontinue the hockey progarm after all the A$$ KICKINGS you would recieve.
It amazes me how much you have to keep saying that you don’t care about us, yet you will write a page about us. I know we don’t play “powerhouses” like pelham, scarsdale, and jon jay, but we do our best.
I guess your being funny, but you no deep down that your league is awful, and the page isn’t all about you but was written to hopefully and finally end this nonsense, about IP being some power house club.
I just noticed that all of the ice hockey games have been taken down from the Section 1 website. Anyone have any idea why?
By the way, Just so everyone knows…...IP’10 is not from Iona Prep…. It’s just someone who’s looking to start trouble. Be a man and use your own name! What are you afraid of?
to peeking early.. thanks for that I thought it was me..
as soon as I can i am going to get a hold of sufferns schedule this year and i hope and pray we are playing iona!!!! please..please!! and you know all the kids are reading this and they will be ready to shut you all up!!
I just reviewed Iona Prep schedule and record from last year and I’m very confused now. Why is Iona considered such a good team?
They played two games against NJ teams and lost both. They did not play any upstate competition – going only as far as Newburgh, where they did win. They lost 2-1 to a young Rye Country Day team. They split the six games they played against Fordham Prep – but lost the playoffs to Fordham. (FYI – Fordham beat Mahopac but lost to Sscarsdale and White Plains)
They appear to be a very good CHSHL team that has a lot a fans who are devoted bloggers and nothing more.
Peeking Early,
As an outsider looking in….......Boy are you obsessed with Iona. Let’s look at the facts, Iona will most likely have a good team this year. Not as good as Suffern but a very competitive team. CAn’t believe that you went back and analyzed last years game results. Guess you have alot of time on your hands! In my opinion,I really think Iona could care less about playing Suffern. They have enough competition in the CHSHL.
It’s also clear from the Blogs that someone is trying to start a blog war between Suffern and Iona. Let’s face it, these two teams “WILL NOT” play each other. “End of story”!
If I were you, I would see if you could play Monroe Woodbury first. Beat them and then start your bragging. ANd after Woodbury, watch out for Mamaroneck…..Because they could beat you…. They have the horses to put a sscare into Suffern.
All I can say is STOP knocking everyone. It’s not worth it at this time. Especially with the season 3 months away.
Section1fan-you seem to want knock Suffern every time you create a blog-but preach “All I can say is STOP knocking everyone” We’ll see how Mamaroneck does against them- No worries, mate.
I think there are a couple of different people using the handle “Section1fan,” unfortunately.
It’s a little confusing and annoying. There are also people posting under different names and having conversations with themselves. I don’t even know what to say to that.
watch fordham prep beat iona the first game of the season.lol.
Then after Iona you can go after White Plains and Scarsdale….LOL
if FP avenges their losses to league 2’s white plains and scarsdale..theyre probably destined for great things this season
Stepinac JV will whip Iona Prep.
Section 1 Fan,
I think you may have me confused with an Iona Prep or Sufern fan. I only made my post on Iona Prep after reading this blog and seeing how much was written about Iona Prep. I was really unfamiliar with their team and their schedule. After reading all of the posts praising Iona and their tough schedule I decided to take a look at last year’s schedule. What I saw did not match the glowing praise they had been receiving in this blog. That is why I made my post.
I assure you I have no ill feelings towards Iona Prep and wish them well. I am also not a Suffern fan and could care less if Iona Prep or Suffern ever play each other.
fp. how does the team look this year.who are the top players returning.any change to beat that super team from up north.
alright im gonna be the peace maker here. I think that both the cshl and section1 hockey are good in there own repsects. Let me rephrase that, Iona is good and Fordham used to be, but they both deserve credit. I dont know if anyones noticed this but I think its crazy how far and fast section1 hockey has come in the past few years with being able to compete for state titles. Especially since there at a disadvantage considering that the schools up north and to the west have communities based around hockey as well as having many more kids in general to chose from. Hockey is a way of life up there.
p.s. – cant we just get along
Amen !!
Let’s face it guys, there are a number of Bloggers out there that just looking to start “Trouble” between the CHSHL and the public school teams. To say that the CHSHL isn’t good is just rediculous! and to say that most of the Tier 1 teams are weak is also rediculous!!
Let’s face, the Section one teams have some really good players like Salt, Ruthberg, Hill, Conner, DiMAggio, Latino, Novick, Natoli etc… But then again, so does the CHSHL with Spillane, Fusco, Datino, Reagan, King, McCabe, Cambria, Lopez, Molinaro and DiMario.
What would be nice is a charity All-Star game at the end of the season between the top Section one players and the top CHSHL players from (Stepinac,Iona nd Fordham Prep). Just the seniors! What a nice way to to end the season, All these kids have played with each other and against each other for years. They’re all friends and they all repect each others talent. What better way for these kids to say good-bye to each other! Considering many may never play hockey again unless they’re playing club hockey at college or Juniors some where.
I agree with “THE TRUTH” that “both the cshl and section1 hockey are good in there own repsects”. Let’s praise them both and enjoy the up and coming season because it’s going to be “ALOT” of fun…....
TO oglethorpe,
Fordham, had approximately 12 seniors graduate last year. It’s going to be a rebuilding year, especially since we also lost one of our Frachise players (K.Clare) to the NJ Hitmen. This was a real loss.
But we do have a nice nucleus of players returning with Spillane,Fusco,Policastro and a number of other players that know how to win.(Fordham has won the CHSHL Championship the last two years). Last years JV team was successful and they should be able to make our team very dangerous by playoff time.
When you say team to the North, I’m assuming that you mean Iona Prep. Looks like everyone is coming back from last years team and they have a core of JV players that will be able to make their team even stronger this year. They’re going to be tough. Probably have the one of the top forwards(King),Defensemen(McCabe)and Goalies (DiMario) in the whole Westchester area.
But don’t forget about Stepinac. Not sure what they have. They also had many players who graduated. They defintely have one of the “TOP GOALIES” in the State, with J.Reagan, but he can only do so much. And to be honest with you, I think he will be playing Jrs somewhere.
But just remember, when Iona,Fordham and Stepinac play each other, throw out the records. These three teams play on “HEART’ alone. On any given day one team can beat each other. Overall, they are fun games to watch.
Season is 3 months away and your blogs have hit ober 200 messages. HOCKEY RULES!
rumors of John Jay coach eric linkowski coaching brewster this year… any thoughts? Any predictions about how brewster will do in league 2 or how the rest of the league is (White Plains, Fox Lane, Yorktown, Scarsedale, P’ville)?
To be honest I also heard that linkowski and his esteemed coleague Mark peteprine might be coaching Somers to, but the bottom line is Linkowski brought John Jay from a League 4 contender to decent League one threat and a section contender every single year. So anyone who has him behind the bench has a shot to do some things.
If coach Link goes to Brewster, that means he goes from Heineken to Bud Light. Way to screw up Coach…good job! Any HS who hires him is crazy.
what’s the story with this AAA player from colorado playing for suffern this year..?? I hear he is a junior and plays for the saints junior team.. anybody know who this kid is and what will he add to suffern this year..
new kid??,
Quess Suffern really wants that State Championship this year. Can’t believe he left Colorado to go play for the “SAINTS Junior TEAM”.Alot better Junior Programs around then the Saints.
His family must of moved to Suffern. It’s my understanding that the Saints are High School friendly. It would be interesting to find out if his family moved here or if he living with another Suffern Hockey family. If it’s the latter, then wach out!
Oh Section1Fan you’ll never fail us. How about this senario. The kid played in Suffern house league years back with most of the kids now on varsity. Parent’s job transfered them to CO, now they are transfered back. Junior Saints only viable option to stay in hockey shape. Have an nice day.
Hmmmmmm,
If you read what I said, I said that his family must of moved back to Suffern!! So calm down…..
this buds for you – explain why going from John Jay to Brewster is like going from Heineken to Bud Light for Coach Link
Suffern’s the Sec 1 favorite and they are still the Sec 1 favorite – you knew that, so i dont understand why you were asking what affect this kid will have on Suffern…
i really don’t care where he lives.. if he is allowed to go to suffern hs then he is allowed to play.. sounds like an already great team just got a little better..
I agree. The player should play for Suffern. Just because he’s playing for the Saints doesn’t mean he’s going to make the Suffern team. It’s the Saints (who are considered a good Midget Major team), it’s not like we’re talking about the Hitmen or Applecore.
I agree. Suffern has a group of real talent on their bench.
This new kid will only add to an already good mix.
Section1Fan you actually sald: “It would be interesting to find out if his family moved here or if he living with another Suffern Hockey family. If it’s the latter, then wach out!” And, thanks for the opinion on the Saints.
I will say suffern has a great team this year but the odds of a kid not making the team who is 16 years old and playing juniors and not 16u or 18u is pretty slim… wouldn’t be suprised if he plays on the second line..
i guess i was asking in terms on how much the team will improve this year if at all with him.. i don’t think winning the section is good enough this year
could new kid play first line?
Is the new kid’s name Sid Finch?
Sid Finch…
How many of the High School kids on this blog get that reference?
...but its a good one.
i don’t get it.
I DON’T GET IT .
http://www.strongmemories.com/toppage8.htm
Sid Finch was a pitcher at the Mets Spring Training Camp in 1985 who had a 150 mph fastball whose tale was told by noted author George Plimpton.
Peeking early…
Thanks for the Sid Finch link. I remember getting my Sports Illustrated Magazine in 1985 and reading this. Boy was I excited for the Mets, about this mystery man who seemingly was twice as good as Dwight Gooden! I fell for this tale “hook-line and sinker” along with thousands of Mets fans…This was before Sportstalk radio and obviously the internet..
We all failed to notice that the story by-line was April 1, 1985..one of the biggest April Fools hoaxes ever..
is new kid going to be first line for suffern..who is their first line?
i hear he is his own first line…. salt hiller and ruthberg are the second line and goetz hill and shore would be the third line
Think we should have a Blog just for Suffern. Seems like no matter what is said, it always goes back to Suffern… New kid or no new kid Suffern is going to get beaten by the TIGERS>>>>>>>HEAR US ROAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
watch out for eastchester/bronxville this year
With tales of this new kid being “that good”, some kids on the suffern bench with hopes of playing this year can only hope that the Sid Finch reference is true.
salt centered first line last year..hiller centered second line last year..whose gunna play where this year if they do play together?
Who really Cares about Suffern! other than Suffern!Watch out for eastchester/bronxville and Stepinac’s JV this year!
What is a mountie, I’ve always wonder that.
Does anyone know what a mountie is
A mountie is a cop in Canada
I believe they are the Mountain Lions – Mountie for short.
ok that makes sense and sorry for the dumb question just was tired of talking about the new kid….heres two questions though; are there any new rule changes or is it the same strict stuff as last year (thanks to the jj and pehlam), and i keep hearing something about monrow woodbury, whats that all about can someone explain.
MW won the div. 2 state championship last year.. i believe they are now div. 1..
I will ask this question again, in case someone has had a chance to figure it out. I haven’t. If Monroe Woodbury moves to D1 state playoffs, I think the D1 State outbracket gets eliminated (because the slot for outbracket winner will be used instead by Section 9 winner {MW- only hockey school in Section 9, I think}). Since Monroe Woodbury is out of D2 state tourney, does the past Section 9 slot get filled by a newly created D2 outbracket? Section 1 will have a few strong D2 schools and it would be great if 2 could participate in the state tourney.
E/T/B moved up to league 3…..will be interesting to see how they do there. Some interesting teams in league 3….Ossining, Pawling, North Rockland, South….who’s the early favorite?
Pearl River and Greeley should top out on league 4 I would suspect….anyone else ready to suprise there ?
We all know Suffern is the king of the mountain in league 1, what with Sid Finch, Gretzky and Jacques Plante on the team now. Mamaroneck, Pac and North should form their own league – 1A or something so Suffern can just play upstate all season..
So who’s the favorite in League 2 ???? Yorktown, White Plains, Scarsdale ?
Can’t wait for Real Deal and Hockey Mom to weigh back in here….
Dan’s the Man !!! HS Hockey talk in September….who’d of thunk it?
where is the “real deal” ??? we need some hockey wisdom!!!
One thing is for certain this season, you can count on both hands, the number of outstanding hockey players in Section 1 this year. The talent level has dropped significantly over the years from where it has been.
Anyone know why?
who are they if you can count then on 2 hands?
with that question you didn’t have to tell us you weren’t the real deal.. what kind of question is that?
Why..
The growth of youth travel hockey in the last 15 years has greatly incresed the skill level of players in the area…but it is also exposing them to high levels of hockey such that regular high school hockey does not have the same appeal…and is often looked down upon.
More kids are opting for private and prep schools at the earlest opportunuty to maintain higher competition, because that what they have been used too since they were young..
I think we would be hard pressed to name any Section 1 high school player, local prep school player, or kid from around here going on to play juniors at any level, that will eventually make a good living playing hockey. That being said, I’m sure there will be some kids who will get a free ride to college-which is certainly worth the exchange of getting up at 0 dark 30 to play hockey over a number of years.
Hmmmm…I agree with your thoughts.
I meant to imply that with youth travel hockey becoming more prevalent these players are used to being surrounded by skilled players and playing against similarly skilled players. When they get to there public high school the same level of skill is often not present. So…some of the better players look towards privates, lower juniors or prep for levels of hockey comparable to what they want or are used to in teammates.
This used to be the case only for the top players..now more and more kids below that top level talent are looking for other things rather than their local schools.
to Hmmmmmm…:I don’t mean to sound korny…but… just the time spent with the kids, the lessons they learn.. sportmanship, value of hard work etc.. and the memories we all will have for the rest of our lives is worth getting up at 0 dark 30, is enough of an exchange for me..
just saw the comment about brewster and how they should move back to league 4.. doesn’t really make sense when you see that brewster came in second in league 2 and lost the league in the last game of the season two years ago. last year brewster came in third after a rough season and was able to beat WP in the last game of the season which if WP had won they would’ve won the league. Brewster but up a good 2 periods against mahopac last year and john jay, and yeah, they werent able to hold on the whole game but that’s definitely not league 4 type play. Brewster will shock everyone this year even though in the past 2 years brewster has graduated about 14 kids. a new coach is going to bring a new attitude and a new swagger to the bears this season.
To Suffern, it’s not korny, I agree with you 110%. I was just pointing out the only possible financial benefit of playing at higher and higher levels. Not to sound like a Norman Rockwell painting, the memories of those younger hockey years are truly priceless. And, Section 1 has shown that what ever talent there is that chooses to play high school can compete very well with talent from the rest of the state that chooses to play high school.
Free ride to college???? You are joking right? NO ONE gets a free ride to college from this area for hockey. NO ONE!
Follow the Daniel twins, then change your NO ONE
OK, We’re 3 months away from the start of the 2007 season.
Who are the top players to watch this coming season?
TOP FORWARDS:
B. Conner, Mamaroneck
Z.Salt, Suffern
M. Ruthberg, Suffern
Z. Hiller, Suffern
T. Perelle, Mahopac
J. Shuman, Clarkstown North
Dimagio, Yorktown
TOP D:
S. Hagen, Mamaroneck
A. Ojeda, Suffern
M. Conklin, Suffern
G. McCarron, Suffern
TOP G:
T. Natoli, Suffern
C. McIndoe, Clarkstown North
L. Glasser, Mamaroneck
To top players,
Seems a bit top heavy on the Mam’k Tigers. They are more of a “depth” team as opposed to a “star” team. Although I do agree Conner could have a strong year.
i thought shuman wasn’t playing..
I heard he was moving to Suffern!
Top Forwards:
Conner(Mamaroneck), Salt(Suffern), Perelle (Mahopac), Eck (Rye), Novick (Ryetown/Harrison), DiMaggio (Yorktown), Latino (Jay), Oliverio (Scarsdale), Ruthberg (Suffern). With Conner,Eck and Salt being the top three.
Top Defense:
S. Hagen(Mamaroneck), Ojeda(Suffern), Keagan (Ryetown/Harrison) With Ojeda and Keagan being the top two.
Top Goalies:
Natoli (Suffern), McIndoe (Clarkstown North). With Natoli being top goalie
Good list for Section one players, below is a list for the CHSHL. Looks like there’s alot of good players to watch this coming season.
Top Forwards:
Molinaro, King Lopez, Cambria from Iona Prep.
Spillane, Fusco, Policastro from Fordham Prep
Datino from Stepinac
With Spillane, King and Molinaro as Top forwards
Top Defensemen
McCabe from Iona Prep
McKennzie from Fordham Prep
Odardi from Stepinac
With McCabe and McKenzie as Top Defensemen
Goalies
Reagan from Stepinac
DiMario from Iona Prep
With Reagan as Top Goalie
What about other players in other divisons. Even though were talking about smaleer schools, there’s steill alot of good travel players playing for those schools.
OPPS Typo’s…Let’s try again!
What about other players in other divisons. Even though were talking about smaller schools, there’s still alot of good travel players playing for those schools.
I think you will find that Marshall Rogers of Rye (last year first team all Westchester/Putnam Defenseman) will have a strong senior season. Not as big as Keegan, but a stronger skater with more scoring touch.
Absolutely!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rogers definitely a Player. Have him rated high! My Top 6 Defensemen…...Based this on overall defensemen skills, their travel experience, their overall results in the past. Just “MY Opinion”, again it’s just my opinion.
the only 2 people on this planet who think Fusco is good are his father and himself
Fusc-No had (well the site wont let me view it but) no more than 25 pts on a weak team in an even weaker league
With all these names being tossed about, let’s have a fantasy league. The draft could take place at Sportorama. LOL
Make your prediction!!! Top three forwards, top two defensemen and top goalie.
My choices (In my Opinion!)
Top Forwards: Salt,Conner,King (All made 2007 Empire Team)
Top Defense: Rogers,McCabe (McCabe made 2007 Empire Team)
Top Goalie: Natoli (Made 2007 Empire Team)
What do you think? Hmmmm…..know you lean towards Suffern!
HAve seen Fusco play many times, just as good as Hill from Suffern and they have Hill as one of the top forwards in the area. (“GO FIGURE!)
Where has Hill been listed as a top foward in the area? Only see him listed when the talk is about Suffern’s 2nd & 3rd lines
Hill was a young second line player for suffern last year and will be again this year. When you say top forwards, I think King, Conner, Salt…i dont think Fusco (who you, yourself, compared to a good second line player) should be considered a top forward
Hill will have a big impact this year.. would not be suprised if he is one of the top forwards this year..
I’m not disagreeing with you. All I did was list the top players from each school. He’s one of their top players this year. Can’t take that away from him!. I’m sure that there are many players better than him, but then again, he could of really improved like Hill and he might have an impact year also…...Time will tell.
I think sufferns second line is a bigger story than their first.. everyone knows how good their first line is..
hill, colorado, modica, goetz, shore.. who knows suffern might even run 3 lines.. doubt it but could happen
just realized something.. suffern has a kid, Hill and a kid Hiller.. both will be big this year.. hill plays on second line and hiller plays on first..
Looks like Suffern is going to run away with Section 1 this year. I know Mamaroneck will have a good team but not sure about their “D”. and I think they will only have one good line.
Don’t think there’s another team that could match up with Suffern. Monroe Woodbury might have a chance, but hey lost alot of their good players to Juniors. But they still have a good core of players.
To be honest with you, from what I have been told, the only team that might give Suffern a competitive game, might be Iona Prep.
But that game will never take place. So it’s not worth discussing!
then why’d you discuss it?
Guess you have all the answers!
I have heard Rye Country Day School (not limited by town or even state lines when selecting a team) has stockpiled some impressive, young, local talent. Just ask the Iona guys how the young guns at RCDS played the Gaels last year. Not sure the Wildcats could take Suffern early in the season, but it might be a good state playoff tuneup for the Mounties after the RCDS youth gets a chance to gell.
what is the story with MW this year.. do they have a shot now that their in div. 1
will suffern play RCDS this year..??
Fanotgame,
That’s great for RCDS.Should make things interesting! What talent from the area did they get? Incoming freshman or players that transfered from another High School?
Section 1 Fan-
More that a few ‘92 birth year kids who play Tier I travel up at Brewster and Tier II travel at WSA. Westchester/Fairfield county kids. Every Section 1 League 1 team has a few kids like this. RCDS just has a few more. They are young, but should improve as they skate together every day on their own rink (nice luxury). Great to see the local prep program improving. Would be nice to see them battle evenly with the Brunswicks and Lawrence Academys of the world in a few seasons. For now, they should get a shot at the Mounties. It would be interesting to see the Suffern boys get tested by their downstate brethren. Just trying to save them a mid season upstate bus trip. We all know they already have reservations in Utica for the end of season upstate trip.
Fusco is God. I cant believe you would disagree forget Cody King and anyone else.
Seems every team out there wants to test against Suffern. I’m sure Suffern has it’s own agenda, why would they care about every team that wants to play them. I think the last prep school Suffern played was supposed to be a pretty good Iona team, and beat them 7-nil. Go play Delbarton
Hey Yo Fanotgame,
Suffern is a joke…..they can make fun of all the teams they want. After this year is over and they have many of their players leaving, then they will be just like the rest of the teams. Then Mamaroneck will kick their butts….Enjoy it now because soon it will be over.
hey HockeyRulesAgain…
“enjoy it now because soon it will be over”???
oh yeah? when?? theyve enjoyed it for the better part of the last three decades…
D1
The Favorite – Suffern – most experience, most talented all around, etc. etc.
The Top Contenders – Mamaroneck, Mahopac, Clarkstown North, White Plains
The Sleep Pick – Clarkstown North – everyone is counting them out, but i’d keep my eye on them. they still have one of the best goalies in the Section and a solid, Senior-led D. These days, goaltending and defense wins championships.
D2
The Favorite
The favorite – Rye – with Rodeschini and Ponzo leaving John Jay for Prep, and Latino maybe not playing, Rye seems to be the favorite here
The Top Contenders – John Jay, Pelham, Yorktown
The Sleeper pick – Brewster
Top Players
D1
Forwards – Salt (Suffern), Ruthberg (Suffern), Conner (Mamaroneck)
Defense – Ojeda (Suffern), Conklin (Suffern)
Goalie – Natoli (Suffern), McIndoe (Clarkstown North)
Under the radar so far – Ryan Byrnes, D (Clarkstown North) – strong, big defenseman that has the ability to to be a Rich-Willows like defenseman. Was injured most of last year.
D2
Forwards – Eck (Rye), Flory (Pelham),
Defense – Rogers (Rye), Field
Goalie – Field
Under the radar – Alfonzetti (Brewster) – the Senior has quietly been one of the best players in Westchester his High school career
besides Suffern, there is no clear-cut favorite. this could be one of the most competitive years in Section 1 in a long time…
Are you kidding with comparing Willows and R Byrnes he can’t and wont come close, also remember as good as Willows was at scoring because he was a foward for much of his playing days and was put on D for his shot,He was really not that great on D as a “defenseman”.
By the way haven’t heard anything about big Willows is he going to school or playing jrs.
Big Willows goes to RCC and plays on the New Jersey Colonials Triple A Major team-
he is still young enough to play majors- and you’re right, tough D, no comparison between him and Byrnes. Are you kidding? Willows and Byrnes in the same category? not even close! No offense to Byrnes, but he doesn’t even come close to Willows.
hey HockeyRulesAgain.. you obviously don’t know much about the depth of suffern this year.. yes they have a excellent bunch of seniors but what makes this year (and the next few years) special is the depth of juniors and underclassmen.. they very well could dominate the section and make a run at state for the next several years..
For the Suffern fans don’t get so wild about Ruthberg as a top foward in Sec.1 ,last yr he was a huge by product of Clark and Salt who are both better hands down.
He is at best average, plain and simple.
2sense- thanks for the update.
I agree with yaqui…suffern is deep with talent…..stay tuned….do forget…Suffern has a tendency of only playing the first two lines each season…the rest just sit and wait their turn….but these kids “in the waiting mode”
are also playing competitive travel hockey and believe me some are stars in the making!
oh yes lifelongfan… a lot of really good players who are waiting for their turn.. their time will come.. crazy how many of these kids would be on the first or second line of most teams.. for suffern all they do is remove splinters..
but losing natoli will be huge… going to be tough to win without a goalie!!!
The rest of the section does it all the time.
Natoli is exceptional, but… the Suffern overall system is even beter. They won the section before Natoli, and will win after him, but…. it’s great to have him one more year
Suffern will win the state championship without a doubt. the only teams that could put up a fight are mamaroneck and clarkstown north. The games between mamaroneck and suffern will be very close a 2 goal game. If lil shuman doesn’t play for north they are in a lot of truble. That team would need a miracle with out that kid playing for any chance of beating suffern… suffern hockey = state champs!!!!
suffern=state championship???,
Would you have to play Monroe Woodbury in the states?
Natoli is good…....Not exceptional….Reagan from Stepinac is a little better
Reagan and Natoli are about equal, but in no way can you make the argument that he is a little better than Natoli… if Natoli played against Western NY instead of Reagan i hear the Hudson Valley Regional team would have had a better shot to take silver or even gold in the ESGs.
the only good thing about stepinac is their JV, or so ive read
Natoli DID play against the West and THEY lost. ANd no they are not Equal, Reagan is the number one goalie in the area. All the players in the area (Except for Suffern), know that Reagan is the top goalie.
He made the Empires the year before and Natoli wasn’t even rated in the top four.
Since today is election primary day
It says a lot about Natoli that he was chosen by his coaches for that start. Let’s not pick on him for failing to lead HV to the first victory by any team over Western since 1867. It was kind of a tall order.
oh “all the players in the area” hahah
oh well “all the people on this blog (from the area) dont think so highly of you”
you wanna talk about ratings? tom brady was taken what? in the 6th round..all 32 teams didnt rate him in their top 5 rounds…man does he suck
im sitting here saying…reagan and natoli are equally good
and youre sitting here saying that reagan is the best and ripping on what some j**k off brewster coach or whomever ranked natoli two years ago?
you lost all credibility when you said fusco was a top player
natoli stopped 50+ shots in 7+ periods in the state final four against the best team in the state…where did reagan lead his team? couldnt make out of the weak CDHSL
reagan is the best goalie in the area if you put him on a squirt b team..maybe them hell lead his team to the house league cup or whatever the playoffs would be
I hate it when folks knock kids on these blogs. They are both great goalies, leave it at that.
Over 300 posts and its still September. Dan, 1867? wow, thats a long time.
I agree with Rod Gilbert. It is inevitable that, in this forum, players will be compared to each other. Lets all assume that if a player gets mentioned here, he is a major contributer on a team that is in contention. So, give him respect. If a player has a rough game (goalies seem to stand out when they have a bad day), lets try to temper our criticism. The kids all read this blog. The last thing they want to see is harsh criticism (of themselves, opponents or teammates). And it should be all about the players.
Amen to Rod and Fanotgame. Let’s keep it classy.
Hey Dan, how about a new post topic so we don’t have scroll down through OVER 300 POSTS to check in on the latest news….. 2 months to go…..
ya dan.. some up with something interesting…
you see thats the thing – because Suffern has such a well-kept program and develop about 5-10 players per grade, they always have an insane amount of depth. There are a lot of good players coming up from Modified in the net couple of years (i think their modified team had almost 30 kids on it!!!! that’s crazy!), but due to Suffern’s depth at EVERY grade level, they will likely have to wait their turn for decent playing time until Junior or perhaps even Senior year. That’s what you have to be aware of when you’re taken as a Freshman on Suffern Varsity – that you’re clearly good enough, and would probably start on most other teams in the Section as Freshman or Soph, but because you’re on Suffern, you may have to wait your turn, a couple years to have decent playing time. In recent years, I can’t recall a Freshman or Sophomore on Suffern starting or having decent playing time – with the exception of Natoli his first season as goalie, and Hill on 2nd line last year…
Salt, who played on the first line with the Daniels twins when he was a soph
Zac Hiller centered the second line last year as a soph
Suffern JV..
Did Suffern ever consider a JV program..along the lines of Mamaroneck.
They could play Mamaroneck and the private and New Jersey public school JV’s (which are close proximity). I even think that Sport-o-rama has a JV league for public schools.
Any Suffern people have knowledge if this was ever considered?
SUFFERNS DEPTH
C.Wynne on D played more as a freshman than most and was a regular as a Soph on thru Senior yr.
He actually played ahead of some seniors as a freshman and Soph.
yeah, i agree
and players like salt and hiller received playing time over some older players throughout their careers
so even though most players have to wait until they become upperclassmen, its it possible for a standout to get time earlier in their HS career
then there are others who would play first or second line who never get to play at all!!!
Think we should just have a Blog for Suffern. Dan, I realize that you have an alliance to them but this blog is ridiculous. OK suffern has the best team, the best Modify team, the best first line, the best second line, the best sophomores, the best freshman, the best eighth grade, the best first graders. (I go go on forever!)
It’s amazing they’re the best at everything, but when someone says that another player is better then one of their players, they go crazy or should I say the parents go crazy. Because it’s not the players writing on these blogs!
Yes, Suffern has a good team and they are lucky that they can put two solid lines out there! Get a life….Let your kids play the game and just be quiet.
The fact is our kids play the game regardless of this blog…this is just a forum to talk hockey…there is nothing that will change as a result of this blog…this forum just gives everyone a chance to speak their mind…this particular blog, with threads of Suffern talk throughout, really speaks to the passion of the Suffern community of hockey players and their parents and fans…..
lifelongfan
amen.
Highschoolhockeyfan
Don’t blame Dan for the discussions on here,If people didn’t come on here to talk trash about Suffern, which is nothing but jealousy because this is one of the best programs in the area every yr, like it or not its fact and people such as yourself are sick of it but thats life, the stuff on here from all the Suffern fans is just them backing their team because all everybody does is talk trash about them, and the ones that don’t know that even though they may not like the program or all the winnig they do yr after yr its how its been since the begining.
mchink
Years ago almost everyone in Rockland had a JV program they all fizzled out and then this modified started which is awful, most schools don’t get enough players and if they do they are not very good so its pretty much a waste of time.
I agree they whole section should start a JV program and if not, then the teams that do could play programs from jersey and lower Conn. which would make most VARSITY programs better.
Tough D
I agree. Modified hockey accomplishes very little for kids beginning hockey and the numbers are lite. One on-ice practice a week (of dubious value) and 12 or so games is not much help.
I’d like to see JV programs. Some large schools could easily field JV teams, like Suffern amd White Plains. Smaller schools could pool there resources of 8th, 9th and 10th graders to field teams.
Of course monetary concerns would hinder the creation of JV’s, so I’d suggest eliminating modified hockey and have JV for grades 8, 9 and 10. Of course the better freshman and sophmores can make Varsity teams like is done in other sports. If the better underclassmen play varsity, this would also help level the playing field for the JV teams.
To: HighSchoolHockeyFan, why don’t you come up with something to discuss that you find interesting, and we can discuss that…if you dont’ have anything to add and don’t like the conversation, then please just leave..it is like the radio or tv, if you don’t like whats on, turn it off!!! and don’t blame suffern fans, parents and players for being excited and passionate about there team just because your team is so bad.. let me ask you, do you call the sports talk shows or sports media and say how sick you are of hearing how great tiger woods is?? no you don’t (i hope) this is what happens in all sports forums..the best team dominates the conversation.. sorry but i really don’t think we would have that much to say about some league 5 team that can barely skate.. (no offense to those kids, have fun and work hard)
Suffern is going to be good but what about Mamaroneck and how they can send 2 or 3 lines out and they would all be top players. mamaroneck vs suffern is going to be a really good game since they both have a lot of great kids returning for next year
first game 12-8-07, then 2-8-08..then hopefully section finals.. you are right fan of the game. .it will be fun
The JV league that they had at SOR before the schools all had modified teams was actually a house league, and although the kids on the teams all went to the same school and the teams were named after the schools, they were not affiliated at all with the school district. Since it was a house league with no REAL affiliation with the school (or the varsity programs for that matter), the freshmen and some sophomores who were riding the bench during the varsity games could play for both teams. That is why that league seemed to have better competition.
Nowadays, you are not able to play for both, so it becomes a big fish/little pond vs. little fish/big pond thing. You are either a star on the modified team or a 3rd or 4th liner on varsity. Since many of the schools lack depth (aside from Suffern), they have to take anyone decent off the modified team and put them on Varsity. Most schools would not fund a varsity team if the option of a modified team is an available alternative since 7th graders cannot play on JV.
“deep dish” Show me a true AAA Bantam tier 1 player, and I’ll show you a kid, who can play for a second line at any of the Section 1 schools including Suffern even though the kid is in the 9th or 10th grade. High school hockey is a mix of all level players, that’s why it’s not fair to be comparing players like I’ve been reading above. Its like comparing apples and oranges . The good thing for schools like Suffern and some of the other strong teams, there feeder programs turn out many kids with organized hockey experience which keeps their program strong year after year, this limits playing time for some kids that would be playing at other schools. High school hockey you play to win. So for some kids its the price they pay for being in a winning program. Many teams over the years in section 1 have proved that just a couple of kids of AAA caliber can be a contender in the Section, and even the state. I remember a few years ago, watching North vs Scarsdale and Scarsdale winning the game single-handedly with a kid named Gitler. That kid never left the ice. I think he played 59 minutes. The only break the kid got was when the goalie covered the puck or the goalie asked the referee for about six or seven equipment checks and repairs or any other way he could get a whistle, which was all part of the game plan I would guess. Clarkstown North, proved last year, with one exceptionally good line You can compete with anyone at the high school level. Unfortunately for a lot a good younger players at a schools like Suffern they are just going to have to wait for there chance to play when they are in there junior or seniors years.
did monroe woodberry move up and did division 1 lose the out bracket game
fan.. yes!!
If you have one great line, you’ll be a Superpower in Section one. You-re right – look at North last year – one great line. Their 2nd line wasn’t anything special. Matt Willows hardly left the ice. As longa s you have 1 or 2 superstar quality players, and a decent goalie with years travel hockey experience, you’re good in Section 1.
Same with the Daniels twins a couple years ago on Suffern – they NEVER left the ice. They would play the whole game. I don’t think Suffern had a 2nd line then – with the exception of Clark and Ruthberg subbing for the Daniels from time to time, they never left the ice. IF you have one superstar line, you’re set.
Quantity is the key.
Without a doubt Suffern has had some of the best players in the section over the years. But the key to their success has been quantity of players which encourages talented players like the Daniels twins to stick around (at least a couple of years). I am not aware of Suffern ever recently losing a talented 8th grader or freshman to a private school.
Other kids in the section, with high-level talent, often take a look at what their local public school is offering by way of a supporting cast, and easily decide that private school is the way to go.
And how many state titles has Suffern/North won over the past few years with that “one great line”??? You CAN compete in Sec 1 with that great line but you will never win a state title like that where the Northern teams have 2 great lines.
Suffern came close last year but still didn’t do it.
think that Suffern competed quite nicely the past couple of years in the state semis. 2 one goal games is not not competing, one being a 4 OT 0-0 game. The fact that you don’t win, doesn’t mean your are not competing. Do you realize that Suffern has beaten North 4 of the last 5 games they have played? North has had one super line, while Suffern has had one great line and a very respectable 2nd line. Suffern this year could potentially double shift hiller and salt as centers on a decent 3rd and 4th line, and with that they could still be on the ice half the time of last years willows and shuman show
mchink, good point. Suffern does provide a supporting cast that makes an argument for talented players to stay for some time. Most years Suffern has quantity and quality that warrant all talent levels participate. Can’t blame players who can only be a part of weaker programs (as well as weaker schedules) for not participating.
Espo is right to. It is going to be very difficult to win a state title with just one line. Taxing that unit will limit their ability to execute. It has been a credit to both Suffern and CN that they represented the section extremely well without the depth afforded the upstate teams. It only boasts as to how superior those top lines were in comparison to the upstate talent.
This years Suffern team is the most balanced team they’ve had in many years. It has the most depth. Most importantly, it has a top flight goaltender. This teams blueprint is the most suited for winning the State title and will likely do so.
Dont get me wrong, I hope Suffern wins the states this year and root for them every year. They represent Sec 1, (as did Rye last year) very well indeed!
I agree with you about winning state with 1 line, slim chance, that was not my point. And for the fact that North lost 4 of last 5 games to Suffern. This only support what I am saying. I saw all of the last 5 games and the way I would sum it up is Suffern and Natoli 1, Natoli 3, and North 1st line 1. (that comment should help add 300 more post on this blog—whats the record Dan?) but thats the way I saw it and yes Suffern has a lot of good players year after year. But high school hockey is what it is a mix of all level players for most. Suffern turns out of there feeder programs many more kids at a higher level then most, thats what keeps them strong year after year, along with a great coach and community support, and with all Sufferns returning players and Sid F. the new kid I dont see anyone beating them this year. All adds up to petty boring hockey this year for Suffern fans.
yeah youre right..suffern should bench all their starters all season and pull natoli to give other teams a shot to not get blanked and so the fans can see non-boring hockey
It’s never boring
You heard it here 1st. Suffern will not with the Section this year. White Plains will dominate.
you cant even beat d2 league 2 teams…and youre a d1 league 2 team…why?
Thanks for the locker room clippings
i was just reading some of the comments and it seems that everyone thinks Hill and Hiller are the same kid..there two differnt players on suffern
I like how you added and pull Natoli. We would be looking at a lot of over time games 0 To 0 if not. Anyway “itsawindstorm” it was’nt my point, but you helped support what i was saying. Good luck at the States?
i dont see how i proved your point, being that i was mocking you for making a stupid comment.
all suffern games are exciting…and this year there is a heightened level of excitement because of high expectations
no, it will not “add up to a pretty boring year for suffern fans”...it will add up to an incredible one
ya ya ya blow outs are boring to me. but for all the “my son is going to the NHL parents” maybe not lol. And try reading my posts again slower and maybe understand the point, but if not, I am not bashing Suffern I think there going to do great things this year. .
bah bah bah bah
what’s the story with this kid from colorado?
NO ONE CARES ABOUT THE KID FROM COLORADO! UNLESS YOU”RE FROM SUFFERN!
you will care when he lights your team up!! add him to what suffern already has and you don’t even have a chance!!!
alright this kid from colorado is coming to play hockey for suffern apparently hes pretty good but nothing amazing. Seriously people we got to think of something different to talk about this is getting old. Does anyonee knoe where Little Willows went to prep school? How do you think the rest of league ones gonna fill out? Who do you think will capture league 2,3? Who are the top 20 players, regardless of league, in section 1? Any takers on any of those topics?
all i got to say to yaqui is bab bab bah bah bah bah bah thats all i have to say
Litte Willows goes to Morristown Beard.
The truth….just read the previous posts…we have covered everything already
I was just checking out morristown beard school and I really hope he went for the academics and revieved a scholorship for his hockey skills. Their hockey team is not very good at all, for a prep school. They lost to CBA, bergen catholic, don bosco, and only beat ramapo hs 4-3.. .
i hear hes not the best student and only went for hockey
THere’s all this talk about suffern defense, Natoli, rutheberg salt, sid finch…wat about the other first line player for suffern..Hiller..wats his deal?
Cool facts I got from the NCAA – Div. 1,2 and 3 combined

hiller is a great player who led the second line last year..there is a question on whether he will play first line this year or continue to lead the second line.. i don’t think there was any question that he would have been on the first line this year, until sid finch showed up..
hiller is a very skilled skater and center. but with Salt a given first-liner, having 2 skilled centers on one line might not work, unless Salt or Hiller move to Wing. i can see hiller centering that line and dishing to salt and ruthberg. either way, he’ll see lots of playing time this year.
i agree, agree… hiller has been playing very will with hill for the saints.. leaving them together with shore would be my preference.. so you would have
colorado, salt, ruthberg
hill, hiller, shore
goetz, modica..
but who knows what schelling will do..
With all the talk about Salt Ruthberg Sid and Hiller who else does Suffern got to fill O in the first two lines. From up above D seems to be Conklin Ojeda McCarren and who else?
As for Little Willows Morristown Beard School may be a way of getting into a better hockey prep school later on. Might be tough getting into a good prep from public without good grades.
thanks yaqui…anyone else have a lineup for O to suggest?? What about D??
for D i would have to go with the obvious.. not much depth here..
ojeda, mccarron
conklin, norwin..
i like the balance of the 2 better than stacking ojeda with conklin
remember in section 1 high school hockey, you only really need 2 lines – so thats 6 Forwards and 4 defesneman. so that should be fine. so those 4 defensemen are fine and those will probably be the only 4 defesemen that play. as far as the 2 lines of forwards – salt, ruthberg, colorado, hiller, hill and shore/goetz/modica. plus the modified kids coming up look good if theyre taken as freshmen, why not stick one of them on there if they are better than some upperclassman. a lot of depth on Offense to play with for that 2nd line – itll be interesting to see who schelling plays.
Why move Hiller to second line? supposibly hes a great face off taker and why wouldn’t you want your best face off taker out their as much as possible with your first line?
on your first line*
that is true.. i don’t think i have ever seen him lose a face-off.. but i would rather have salt playing center and hiller playing center on the 2nd line.. then 2 centers on one line..
Can you please take your Suffern BS Talk to another blog somewhere…No one here cares about who is playing what line for Suffern….there are 35 other schools in the Section.
We could care less about salt or hiller or anyone else on that team.
Talk the other 35 schools in the section
Jump in anytime!
Start a new thread of discussion. In the meanwhile, if you haven’t noticed, this blog has been primarily about Suffern and some of North and the remaining threads discuss some of the other schools. This must mean the contributors to this blog are mainly from either Suffern or North.
BTW bad-mouthing anyone or team is not acceptable!
this is the blog for the section.
suffern is in the section.
suffern fans, as well as just general hockey fans have posted about suffern numerous times…
why?
well,
because this is the section 1 blog
and suffern is in section 1
feel free to add whatever you want about any other team,
though the abundance of suffern posts is a testiment to the interest and devotion of the suffern faithful, who happened to believe that schelling will put out an excellent product this season, and with good reason
but dont jump in here and attack teams that win more than yours or players that are better than your son’s or you or whatever simply because they are mentioned a lot
I agree with “Suffern Sucks”. Don’t you Suffern parents have something better to do than knock everyone else. He’s right all you do is keep repeating the same things over and over and over AGAIN! What your talking about now was said over 100 blogs ago.
Suffern is the greatest…... Their 12th grade is the best, their eleventh grade is the best and their tenth grade is the best…... Even their Bus drivers are the best… Now that we have come to that conclusion…...Let’s talk about a subject that we all can discuss…. or do you still want to talk about how your son’s are better than everyone elses!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just Grow up!! You’re a parent …Try and show some class…..
Your not a Suffern fan-that’s great. But I dont see any of the Suffern comments that knock every else as you comment says-”I agree with “Suffern Sucksâ€?. Don’t you Suffern parents have something better to do than knock everyone else” and as for “Let’s talk about a subject that we all can discuss….” go for it. What do you have to say other than complain about what someelse is interested in. Maybe you will spark an interest
My feeling is it’s only about 2 or 3 Suffern parents who are talking on this blog and that they just keep changing their screen name to hide their identity. These parents are living thru their kid’s hockey and have nothing better to do. Meanwhile they are embarrasing their kids amongst their peers. They just want to keep seeing their kids name in print.
To Section 1, You’re absolutely RIGHT! They’re talking to themselves. Probably the parents of the first line and maybe the center of the second line…Just read between the lines, it’s easy to figure out! But they will keep going and eventually realyy embarass the Suffern team. Time will tell…
I thought the psychology blog would be under the academic central, not varsity central go figure
i have not seen one entry from suffern that bad mouths another team or player. if you don’t like the suffern discussion bring up something you would like to discuss. are you unable to come up with something? if yes, then just leave!!! ok, i am begging for someone to bring up a topic that will spark a dicussion…. it’s your move suffern sucks, NOTASuffernfan, and SO…..and anyone else out there that feel slighted about the sufffen discussion
yaqui,
Don’t have a Cow! Don’t worry if you want to keep talking about your son, then do so! We’ll listen…...CAlm down
i am very calm, thanks for your concern..
Well I tried posting this new subject on Dan’s latest blog entry without a bite. Let’s give it a shot here. Maybe we will get this blog entry up to 500 posts…I’m getting carpal-tunnell syndrome scrolling down this far!
Here is my question. Will the combined teams remain the same as last year? Are there any new ones?
I think the number of merged teams will increase in the coming years, because of cost, efficiency and competiveness. Look what a good team Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville has become.
Anyone want to offer an opinion?
Please don’t tell me Suffern will beat any combination of combined teams
How about this, I here J O and the States made rule changes agaian. Federation rules now Section 1 ?????? Empire must strike back… great job “SUFFERNSUCKS” we will make 600 posts without a problem now…...
when suffern plays your school
There are a lot of high school hockey players with dreams of playing college hockey D1 or D3.
What forum provides the exposure to get to either a D1 or D3 team? Assuming the player is good enough.
Some say prep school, others say a good Junior A or B team, etc.
Any thoughts?
Oh Jesus, what did mr. orlando do now, take the hitting out of hockey and make the players wear buble wrap. Personally I think this guy has taken the some of the intensity competetive edge out of section 1 hockey. I understand that due to some isolated incidents he was put under pressure to change some rules, but as much as he and some of the school administators (obviosuly soccer fans)dont like hockeys roughness, the fact is its part of the game. Now don’t get me wrong I’m not talking about the stick work or the cheap shots, but no longer are players able converse on the ice (trash talk), or defend their goalie after a scrum in front of the net, and thats just Old Time Hockey.
the truth,
You have to be kidding. You’re saying that you’re against fighting, but you don’t like that they’ve cut down on trash talking and scrumming (neither of which has really been cut completely out of the game).
Maybe professional players can trash talk and scrum in a professional manner without taking it to the next level. And even when they decide to fight, they’re adults, and it’s allowed in their league.
But High School players are in many cases a little less mature than that. Things escalate for stupid reasons having more to do with unchecked emotions than with any code of conduct.
Fights have no place in High School hockey, and taking steps to cut them out of the game has done nothing to the “competitive edge.” The elite programs were just as intensely competitive (trash talk and scrums included) after last year’s rule changes as they were before.
And fighting is in no way related to “roughness,” which is still welcomed in Section 1 hockey and probably always will be. The truth is that the lower tier programs always have most of the problems with fighting. If you think the undisciplined, fight-prone players on those teams are in any way tougher than the well behaved freight trains employed as defensemen on teams like Mamaroneck, Clarkstown North, Suffern, and Mahopac, you’re out of your mind.
“lifelongfan” Grades get good hockey players to COLLEGE. if you don’t think so go to the NCAA’s web site and check out the new requirements on grades before a DIV. 1,2,3 college coach can even look at a High School player, public or private, 16 core classes 2.0 GPA 1040 sat. If a kid is missing just 1 of the core class requirements there in- eligible. A kid with a higher GPA can have a lower sat score, the NCAA list the sliding scale on there web site with regards to grades. Div 2 and 3 kids only need 14 core credits. The best thing I ever heard from a coach tell his players was at a capitals travel team meeting. “for them to try to eliminate there competition in the classroom if they want to play in college”. B hockey players with HEART and GRADES can play in college. Maybe not DIV. 1.? Some of the best hockey I have seen is junior hockey and I guess its because its loaded with the best players who didn’t get the grades and couldn’t go to college?
Dan, this is not meant to be condesending in anyway, but did you ever play hockey. I am not talking about cursing and screaming at the other players but when it gets to the point where you can’t talk to the other players and can barely look at them without getting an unsportsman like, which it is at that point, its going overboard. Plus when I’m saying scrums in front of the net im talking about battles between the foward and defenseman going at it for posistion. I can’t even tell you how many peanlties I saw/got the second half of the season because I was moving the foward out of the net the same way I did through 10 years of teir 1 travel hockey and 3 years of League 1 hockey. It makes the game fustrating when its turned into two hand touch in the corners and around the net. I don’t mind them taking steps towards stopping the fighting, I think it’s whats given hockey a bad reputation, and prevented it from growing faster in Section 1. I just think they have to take a different apporach to it though, with more off ice reprecutions toward players than on ice rule changes, because its 1 or 2 kids on a team who are causing these problems, not the rules. Well at least we have a new topic.
When you said in your first post that players aren’t allowed to “defend their goalie after a scrum in front of the net,” I understandably assumed you weren’t referring to “battles between the foward and defenseman going at it for posistion,” but the scuffles that happen afterward when defensemen get mad that someone slightly bumped into the guy wearing 50 pounds of protective equipment.
And I didn’t see many unsportsmanlikes given out in the second half of the season, either, but if you’re really a player you probably got a better view of that than I did.
I agree that it’s a few kids spoiling it by acting like punks, and that Orlando’s rule changes were really sort of a do-something-for-the-sake-of-publicly-addressing-the-problem situation, but I can’t blame him considering it appears the coaches were talked to so many times about it before the rule change. The section chairperson position is not really the position from which to get a hold of this problem. It’s got to happen at the coaching level. But if they can’t get a hold of it without something drastic first being done by somebody upstairs, then that’s what has to happen. It’s been a clumsy road to a more orderly section with less black eyes, but it’s getting there.
yeah I wasn’t to clear in my first post, but something occured to me last night that I had not previously taken into consideration. I was on one of the teams that had a probblem last year and I know that Orlando and the section payed close attention to the rest of our play, maybe they told the referees to do the same. I was speaking from first hand accounts and didn’t witness to many other games in the section last year, so it’s very likely that I was speaking of incidents isolated specifically to my teams games. I would like some feed back from other people who watched some other teams last year and see if it they noticed anything.
I think you’re right that the teams that were involved in the major fighting incidents last season were watched more carefully for the rest of the season, which I personally think is a little unfair. Coach Linkowski (John Jay) said he noticed his team being called for more penalties after the Pelham fight, and I can’t disagree with him. Sorry I jumped down your throat, truth. I’ve been home sick since last Friday so I’m a little cranky.
What does everyone think about Yorktown droppin to league 2. Div. 2? I think Yorktown’s got a solid core of of upperclassmen in DiMaggio, Matranga, Bonitatibus, Michelson and a good goalie in Parra. Will they finally find success in the Division 2 Playoffs?
they dropped to league 2…theyre still d1…(like how white plains-who hides in league 2) is a d1 team…so yorktown will still have to play in the d1 playoffs..they just play league 2 teams all year and then get a worse seed for the playoffs
Ytown finally got rid of that idiot coach who preached “finishing your checks” (ie, take a lot of dumb penalties). Now maybe they will hire someone who will teach hockey and utilize the skilled talents of his players instead of turning them into thugs. Dont like the drop to L2 tho. Makes us look like dogs.
Who’s left in League 1 (Suffern,Mamaroneck,Clarkstown North, who else?
Who makes up League 2,3,4?
Suffern, Mamaroneck, Clarkstown North, Mahopac, Pelham, John Jay, Rye, Rye Town/Harrison
To HockeyFan,
Yorktown is in the right level. They do have a good 4-5 kids but no Defense. Even league two will be a tough division for Yorktown to win.
husker dude.. stop blaming your coach for taking penalies.. every coach will tell you to finish your checks. Just because you took stupid penalties, doesn’t mean you should blame your coach. You might win a few more games in L2 but that’s about it.. you are not going to compete with the L1 teams so you might as well make the season a little more enjoyable by playing teams more on your level.
Number 400
Hey Yaqui,
There you go again….....coming down on another school. A blogger has an opinion and you knock him…...... We can always expect a kind word from you!
I agree with you “NoyaquiFan”.......yaqui is just a frustrated parent with too much time on his hands.
Is it true also with the new rules this year all D-1 teams make the play-offs, evevn if they dont win 1 game?
what is so wrong with what i wrote??? I wasn’t knocking him at all.. i think it is better for their team to be in L2.. it will be much more enjoyable.. I was knocking the fact that he blames his coach for the “dumb penalties” the team had.. the coach wasn’t on the ice.
yorktown will play in d2 this year due to enrollment size
yaqui you really have to calm yourself down, i dont even read what you write anymore its all the same bah bah bah bah
Folks are getting confused over their D’s and L’s. Yorktown is still D1 but now L2. Or did Yorktown suddenly lose 500 students and is considered a D2 team?
Hockey Fan is wrong and Alphabet Soup is right. Yorktown after a brief stay in League 1 is moving to League 2 however if they qualify for the sectionals they will have to move up with the big boys into Division 1. The same goes for Scarsdle
Hey dan I can’t remember if we already aksed this one, but besides Suffern and Mamaroneck, how do you think the rest of League one will play out. I personally can’t begin to figure it out.
Mahopac is always tough
Pac is always tough but do you think the’ll be able to manage without alosco and cimedano? It’s seems like every team is suffering more from the loss of seniors and tansfers this year than in years past.
Aint that the truth “true”. Look at North – lossed all those great Seniors plus underclassman stars Willows and Shuman
what do u think of Mamaroneck and there top players returning
and i also want to here the names
Brian Conner, Brett Jackson, and Sean Hagan are the three biggest returners for mamaroneck
Jackson is out for the season with a torn ACL.
Connor, Jackson and Hagan will all look nice on the 2nd team all section behind the suffern starting 6
Connor “YES”, others “NO”
y not the others jackson was secong on the team in goals last year
Jackson had about 10 less goals then Connor so it’s not that big of a deal and he’s out for the season anyway so we won’t be seeing anything from him.
Another good player coming back for Mamaroneck though is the junior goalie Luke Glaser. I’m not really sure how the other kids mentioned are but I think Mamaroneck should be pretty solid.
Not much to mention on Hagen except his size, he really doesn’t skate all that well.
Hagen does have a nice hard shot from the point, but you are right about the skating
Connor absolutely! Jackson (even though he’s hurt), can’t be compared to Connor. Not even close
I don’t know if this is true but a Mamaroneck midget team recently beat scarsdale and mahopac by more than 10 goals a game?? Any knowlege on this?
To Fan,
So what? Were the travel players that play for the Vipers and Brewster playing? That’s fall hockey….means NOTHING!!! so don’t get too excited.
what about fine zwig and seid returning for mamaroneck to
it was just posted on the other blog that suffern will play iona this year.. not sure how true this is but according to someone over there they will play them in both a scrimmage and regular season game.. really looking forward to that
2 weeks and counting. anyone getting excited?
The first weekend of the season on Thanksgiving weekend, already rivals go at it – Clarkstown North vs. Suffern. Saturday, November 24th at Sport-O. It doesn’t matter that North most likely isn’t going to be as good this year, it’s still North-Suffern!
Matter of days now folks. Hope everyone is tired of football and getting ready for a great season of hockey. READY????
I believe this is the beginning of the end of a great run of talent for Clark N. Suffern will have all the pressure, if they don’t run the table (by winning all their league games) in the regular season, it will be seen as a failure. If they don’t win the section 1 playoffs, it will be a monster failure. It would seem Mamaroneck has the only shot at spoiling it for the mounties.
Rats on the ice???
Panthner,
No rats. Mama Shulman is gone.
it all begins today!!!!!!
white plains over suffern for the ship. you heard it here 1st.
Sect1fan,
white plains….#2 in LEAGUE 2
L@...SO WHAT? The only thing that matters is the playoffs..again WP over Suffern for the Sec 1 title.
To Sect1fan,
Thanks!

Think you meant to post that on the Oprah/Dr. Phil/Jerry Springer blog. That can be found at…......
what the heck is that all about….???? would love to see ojeda meet her at center ice with her b…t..ch.. head down..
He would have to be out of the penalty box to meet anyone at center ice.
Oj doesnt take that many penalties..thats Wynne lol
Oj just crushed people (ask Bloom)
Keep hiding in League 2 so you can barely collect double digit wins before bowing out to Suffern again in the playoffs
can we play in league 2 so we can be among the section leaders in points
suffern plays white plains on jan. 18th… we will see how well they do and wheather they can contend for section title..
to. saintshky.. yes oj does take a lot of penalties for the saints but thats his job.. get out there and rough some people up.. he does it and does it well.. !!!!
Unsportsmanlike conduct? Thats not how you win games. Great write up for this Saints on the MJHL website. Here is the link.

Hard work, offense, great goaltending. Stay out of the box. Undisciplined penalties cost. The other team takes more penalties, you score on your power play. The other team has a long ride home.
IONA, SUFFERN GAME COMING TO US SHORTLY.. EITHER NEXT WEEK OR THE WEEK AFTER!!! it will be a scrimmage so final score wont’ mean much, I would say that you would have to be there to know what the deal is..
should be a non-league, regular season game, not a scrimmage. Last year, Clarkstown North vs. Monroe Woodbury was a regular season game and it was great, and the score counted, not sure why Iona vs. Suffern cant be in the regular season… by the way, 2 weeks still the seasn starts. north vs. suffern thanksgiving weekend
the iona scrimmage i believe is wednesday.. then they will scrimmage MW over the weekend of the 16th—17th
MW-Suffern scrimmage is the 18th at 6pm@MW
where and what time is the Iona vs Suffern scrimmage?
Guys getting pumped up over a scrimmage???? relax guys. wow.
bah bah bah ba ba bah
It’s a srimmage…....Calm down. It means NOTHING! Real non league games take place later in the season. I think it’s great that these teams look to scimmage each other. Just going to make each team better.
i really dont’ see anyone getting crazy about the scrimmage.. yes it was mentioned, some seem like they would want to go and watch.. but who is not being calm..?? i don’t get it…who said it was the stanley cup final game or that it means anything.. ? I will say though, if one teams get blown out there will be a lot of “IT MEANS NOTHING”

Does anybody know of any games earlier than Rye v. Fox Lane on November 21?
I know there are scrimmages, but is this the first game of the season? Is it even a scrimmage or a game? Is everybody in agreement that Fox Lane will be pummeled?
You need 10 practices before you can play a game so the earliest you can play a game is Nov 19th.
anyone know when the hockey preview comes out in the paper? It has to be soon, the season starts next week! and who is the reported that’s going to be covering hockey now that Dan Kiernan has left?
Hey Ali,
Does Stepinac have a JV team this year??? Heard that they didn’t have enough players so they are combining the JV and Varsity teams.
I would not say that Fox Lane will get pummelled. They have a strong goalie. Three of Rye’s top skaters are still playing football and have not been on the ice in a while. I would expect the early Rye vs. Fox Lane match to be a close one. Unless the football team loses the state semifinal game this weekend, Rye will be without two of its first line forwards (Q back Eck, Tight end Keogh)and a top d man (split end Gordon). It will be a good opportunity for the Rye coach to get a look at some of the newcomers.
for all of you that care.. suffern will play iona in a regular season non league game this year..
My team just played with these new rules, the so called federation rules, and there awful. It’s not even hockey. It is not even the hooking or stick work thats the problem, there calling every hard hit.
I totally agree, there are way to many restrictions on hitting with these federation rules.
why dosnt anyone write on this thing anymore?
I want to know why there is minimsl coverage of the Rockland Ice Hockey teams in the Journal News and why the blogs under Harold Gutman are frequently unavailable.
stay tuned this week. while I don’t have any control over whether the blogs work, I will be writing about all the League 3/4 teams soon. In the meantime, feel free to write something about the Rockland teams. I haven’t seem them, and this an open forum.
