Couldn’t ask for much more from the Suffern-Pelham game last night. The Pelicans weren’t intimidated and offered a huge challenge for 25 minutes, and then the Mounties issued a champion’s response. “Here are the particulars.”:http://www.thejournalnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071212/SPORTS02/712120398/1114
“We realized that we have enough heart that, even when we’re down, we can come out and play the way we have to,” Suffern defenseman Andrew Ojeda said. “To have this streak going, it’s amazing, and we don’t want to break it.”
Incidentally, it seems the two groups getting the most grief on this blog are Suffern fans (“Would you Suffern fans please get over yourselves” Nov. 20) and parents (“parents=low lifes” Dec. 6), which are sometimes combined (“Suffern Parents are the worst” Dec. 10). For what it’s worth, the Suffern parents I met last night seemed very nice to me, and I think it was almost the entire starting lineup’s. Not sure what this means.
After the game, I was planning on sticking around the watch the end of Scarsdale-Brewster, but it was already 7-0 when I finished writing my story. Big turnaround for the Raiders (3-3), who lost their league opener and finished last in the Pelham tournament, but have now won three in a row. Harvey also evened its record at 3-3, snapping Somers/North Salem’s 3-game win streak. And League 3 Pawling knocked off League 2 Mount Pleasant 4-2 in the upset of the day.
To clear up a few of the comments  I don’t think we should single out any high school kids for criticism on this blog, ever. But that goes double for Suffern goalie Tom Natoli. If Natoli played for Pelham, the Pelicans would have won last night. It’s as simple as that.
Also, I don’t think it’s appropriate that every time someone wants to talk about a non-power league team, someone follows with something like, “League 3 is like house league hockey. Let’s keep it real here.” This is a blog about high school hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley—all of it. Obviously most of our attention is directed to the upper-level teams, but this isn’t the NFL, where “we play … to win … the game.” Players everywhere are showing dedication, commitment, effort, etc and deserve to be recognized here, not put down. And don’t forget, RT/H was in League 3 just two years ago. Now they’re the No. 4 team in League 1.
I’m spending tonight in the office, drinking hot teas, checking the radar and gearing up for Iona Prep-Stepinac tomorrow night at Murray’s, assuming it’s not cancelled.

The Pelicans can skate with anyone in Section 1. They showed that in their 2 close losses to powerhouses Suffern and Mamaroneck. As long as they keep the puck out of their defensive zone (usually thru strong offensive pressure of their own), they will win. Their best defense is a strong offense. To beat them, you need to put shots on goal at their improving, but still not quite there yet goalie tandem. It is amazing how Pelham goes thru long stretches of outshooting seemingly strong opponents by a wide margin. Good strategy implemented very well.
I root against Pelham and Suffern (I wont tell you my team) but ya got to agree to say Suffern is the best, last few years and now. Pelhams been quality in that other division for years and years as well. I watched Pelham early in this season and when they are on they are a pesky smart opportunistic team to run up against. Most games they make you forget they still got young tenders in between the pipes. I did not see last nights game but I was not surprised at the effort they gave even for the one period against a great team. Every year they seem to get more shots at other teams goalies and they seem to be able to put pressure on teams. Even the best teams they always seem to get them
Scarsdale has turned it around, look for a good match next time they play white plains, they could beat any team in their league if they continue to play how they have for the last 3 games…they have a tough game against queensbury friday night who made it to the final 4 last year for division II and another tough one satuday night verse bethlaham who is 5-0 both games for the bethlaham tournament which pelham is also in, scarsdale is working hard and looking good…definatly contenders to win league II
yah, Pelham is in that tournament with Scarsdale and Queensbury was inthe final four last year, I think Pelham beat Queensbury in OT but while they are not as good as they were last year they will be tough. Look for both Pelham and Scarsdale to win both if they can withstand the physicality of that type of game
Rye has an extremely tough tournament coming up over break. They play in the Rome Free Academy tournament agaisnt Sweet Home, Queensbury and RFA, all four teams at the tournament finished in the top 10 of the state last year.
Pelham plays queensbury this weekend.
check http://www.chshl.net for any postponements in catholic (i.e., possibly iona-stepinac later this afternoon, fordham-farrell later tonight…both in yonkers)
iona prep is closed today…not sure yet if that means the jv game (5:15) and the varisty game (7) are postponed…
NYS rankings come out around the 23rd.. i am going to predict suffern #3
if the school is closed then all activities are cancelled
Rules,
Those rules apply to public schools, I don’t know if the Catholic schools HAVE to cancel. However, it is in their best interest to do so.
No School NO GAME!
And don’t forget, RT/H was in League 3 just two years ago. Now they’re the No. 4 team in League 1.
RT/H is a big school they should have been in league 1 from the start
====================================
Suffern wins league one over Mamaroneck because Mounties have more heart
Pelham wins league II they are the better team in that league
So what’s up with Rye? Are they done? Or do they have a comeback in them?
