Another CHSHL team loses to M-W in OT

January
14

After Stepinac lost to Monroe-Woodbury in double overtime at the Mamaroneck tournament, Iona Prep went up to Newburgh last night and lost 3-2 in overtime. The Gaels allowed the tying goal with 50 seconds left in regulation, and the winner was scored about two minutes after that. If you’re Iona Prep on the long bus ride home, do you feel good that you stayed with the defending state champs or bad about blowing it in the end? I know coach Tim Turnbull was disappointed.

Also yesterday: Matt Ng watched “Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville score four goals in the third period”:http://lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080114/SPORTS02/801140353/1110 to beat Clarkstown South 5-2. Alex Hagen scored four goals, and the winner was scored by Alex Byers, who missed a lot of the season with mono.

Suffern bounced back from a tie pretty much as expected, scoring eight goals and allowing just 11 shots against Mahopac. And New Rochelle, playing its third game in four days, beat Carmel 4-1.

I will be at Rye-Rye Town/Harrison tonight at Playland. Unfortunately they don’t have wireless, so I won’t be able to provide updates, so hopefully there are some good samaritans who want to fill in. Any predictions?

For the rest of the week, we will be at Suffern-White Plains Friday and the Scarsdale tournament Sunday. I have to see about tomorrow, but I will likely be at Mahopac-Scarsdale, because 8:45 on a weekday for Iona Prep-Stepinac is probably too late, especially because I have yet to see a game start on time.

  1. Playland Internet

    Harold,

Check with the Playland office. They have internet hookup upstairs above the visitors bench.

  2. IONA

COACH TURNBULL BLEW THIS GAME FOR IONA. IN THE LAST 50 SECONDS HE HAS ALL OF HIS TOP FORWARDS ON THE BENCH. HE PUTS OUT TWO FORWARDS THAT MAYBE HAD TWO OR THREE SHIFTS ALL NIGHT AND NO SHIFTS IN THE THIRD PERIOD.

  3. capo

horrible coaching by turnbull – how does he not take a timeout and put out his 1st or 2nd line…he almost deserved to loss after that…

also, after seeing that chaminade box score, iona is going to have MAJOR goalie problems after dimario graduates…looks like dimario shutout chaminade for 2 period, then kaiser went in, allowed 3 goals on 6 shots (against a horrendous chaminade team)

thank god the jv goalie (a frosh) is improving fast…almost stole a game against farrell in a 4-3 loss in which he faced something like 60 shots…

  4. capo

    iona’s schedule for the week
    -tomorrow, stepinac, murray’s, 8:45
    -wednesday, harvey at harvey, 3:30
-saturday, farrell, abe stark (coney island), 8:15

    points to take away
-the farrell game is iona’s last league game
-1 point in these 2 league games clinches iona for 1st in chshl
-at the end of the month, iona plays burke catholic at the ice hutch, at bergen catholic and at don bosco prep as a good warm-up to get ready for their playoffs…and hopefully a big catholic state championship game at the ice hutch against one of the buffalo powerhouses (probably st. joseph collegiate)

    Harold-

There is card you can plug into your laptop that you can get for about $40 that allows you to get internet access anywhere you can get cell phone reception. I believe there is a monthly service for it, probably like having an additional cell phone on your account. Since I can only assume that work-related software or hardware for your computer would be paid for by the Journal News, and that they probably pay your cell phone bill (along with the cell phone bills of all their reporters), it would be no big deal for you to go out and get this and add it to the JN’s company cell plan. This way you wouldn’t have to worry about what rinks have wireless connections and which do not. Also, it’ll come in handy for whatever sports you are covering during the fall and spring seasons since they are most likely in areas that will not have free wifi.

  6. Suffern Fan

And what score did MW beat Mamaroneck by? 5 to 0…..Now that was a real wupping! Maybe Stepinac and Iona should be rated ahead of Mamaroneck in the power ratings.

  7. CHSHL Fan

Iona still should of won the game in regulation time. King scored a goal in the first but the Refs were so out of position that they didn’t see the puck go in.Hit off the back of the net and bounced out.

Also, the game tying goal was kicked in off the skate, which should not of counted. But you’re not going to get that call when you’re the visiting team.

    Maybe next time.

  8. fanotgame

Step and Iona would be legit top 1/2 League 1 teams in Section 1 this year. Would have competitive games with Suffern, Mamo, Pelham, RTH and Rye. Add WP and that would actually be a great 8 team league this year. Fordham would be better than the bottom 2 this year in League 1 and comparable to some other League 1 and League 2 teams including Jay and Yorktown. These CHSHL teams can’t help the fact they have to play Chaminade and St Edmunds 6 times total. The top League 1 teams have the same issue by playing North and Pac 4 times total this year. There will always be a whipping boy or two each year. North and Pac will be back and someone else will fall. There will always be some mismatches, even in Section 1’s League 1 and CHSHL’s A division.

  9. game

Either way it was a good matched game between 2 good teams. I only wish Iona played more local teams so we could get a better perspective of how they are. From what i have seen from WP MW and Suffern i think Iona would be a top contender for the top 3 spots in section 1

  10. Section 1 Fan

Not taking anything away from RCDS, because they did beat Iona 1 to 0. But I think Iona is a much better team than RCDS. To rate them high on the power ratings just isn’t right. If you look at other games in the area, it doesn’t make sense to rate them as high as the Journal does.

Iona and Stepinac just lost to MW and MW killed Mamaroneck who destoyed RCDS. So I really think the Iona game was a fluke. If you rank RCDS high then you have to drop Mamaroneck lower on your ratings because of their loss against MW.

  11. capo

    fanotgame,

very good point…if iona, stepinac, fordham were playing molloy/st.francis/xavier from the B div. or even holy cross from the C div., its still be better competition than st. edmund (graduated all of last year’s B championship team’s talent) and chaminade (combination of talented hockey players opt not to play for high school b/c of junior/club commitments and an internal school policy about not moving up jv players…chaminade’s jv is undefeated at 9-0 and has whooped the rear ends of farrell, fordham, stepinac, etc…iona’s jv plays them tonight)

  12. UGh

    Hey Suffern Fan,
mamaroneck does not care if this site ranks them 102nd, it really does not matter. What does matter is that Suffern will lose home ice advantage after Mamk beats suffern at SOR.

  13. typical

Typical Iona parents getting on the blog and blaming their coach for the MW loss. Nice, the guy probably gets 3 thou to coach that team and the millionaire parents who spend little to no time with their own kids blame the coach.

  14. capo

    typical,

normally, i’d agree with you…but hard to say with less than 1 minute, up 2-1, WITH A STOPPAGE OF PLAY, how do you not call timeout to put out the 1st OR EVEN THE 2ND LINE! turnbull putting out the 3rd with just under a min remaining = just plain dumb…

  15. Hey UGh

Mamaroneck couldn’t beat them in the uh ‘Jungle’-what make you think they will beat them in SOR

  16. domenico

dnt blame it all on tim, 17 alex lopez had taken a penalty late in the period to put them down

  17. capo

    domenico,

heard about that…can’t believe lopez did that even more than turnbull’s call…

  18. Iona Fan Forever

    typical

I have to respond to you!

Do you really think that was an Iona parent saying something negative about their coach. All season you have never heard any of the kids or parents bad mouth anyone! (Another team or player). That’s not their style.
The only thing that was said negatively about a game was when Iona played White Plains, when the players had beer cans and batteries thrown at them. So White Plains fans deserved the bad press.

So before you start coming down on the millionaire parents, think first because this isn’t Iona’s style and that blogger was definitely not from Iona Prep.

  19. domenico

true that capo, but he made a bad pass and it wasn’t a total loss because that game could of been over right then and there if he didn’t stop him. all and all poor play by him

  20. My Hockey Team

Capo, Have you seen molloy/st.francis/xavier/holy cross play? I am going to assume that you havent because of your statement. St Edmunds and Chaminade would beat or give them a real good game to all of those teams. Holy Cross belongs in the B division (they tried to move up and were told they couldnt) Molloy has a small roster and decided to move down (hindsight is great but they probably should have stayed in A but would probably be like Chaminade)

  21. capo

    my hockey team

haven’t seem those programs play…just know histories of those hockey programs

was going on the basis of consistent 9/10 goal shutout wins

definitely will take your word, though (knew molloy dropped to B b/c of small roster)

  22. Harold Gutmann

    LoHud Hockey,
I don’t have a company cell phone. Do you want to be my agent?

    Also, SCHEDULING UPDATE:
Tonight’s Brewster-Pawling game was cancelled (no school at Pawlingl)

  23. chshl

i think there might be a small war at murrays tomorrow night when tepinac and iona face ff again

  24. murrays

if there is one rink in this area that starts on time it is murrays there are no games on before the iona stepinac game. and the chshl refs dont like to start late because they dont get extra money like the section 1 guys. maybe that can explain why 95% of the public games take so long.

  25. mark messier

ETB WILL MAKE ALOT OF NOISE IN THE PLAYOFFS THIS YEAR
AND WILL BEAT WHITE PLAINS WHEN THEY PLAY THEM

  26. 4th liner

I thought Iona’s 3rd and 4th lines were all tier 1 travel players?

  27. 4th liner

    teir 1???
cody king plays for the westchester mariners tier 3 in the hudson valley..cambria plays for applecore premier which is junior c – it may even be midgets and who knows where that lopez kid plays…kid should be ashamed he got beat up by a goalie last week

  28. Jaromir Jagr

that’s right ETb will beat WP when they play them because WP is overrated and ETb is Underrated. Just wait and see how bug an impact Etb makes on the playoffs.

  29. dub p

you must be crazy to think that wp is gonna lose to etb…lmaooooooo thats a joke…i kno ETB is good, one of my friends is on the team…its not gonna happen…maybe next year

  30. WP Fan

ETB is good team with a strong 1st ans 2nd line I saw them play against Brewster they dominated the game and slolwed it down at the end of the third. I sense that it will be a close game between ETB and White Plains…. I say 4-3 White Plains

  31. rangers

BREWSTER!!!! they are a 6-8 league 2 team, I am no WP fan but if you can’t beat brewster by more then a goal the comments on you guys making it to the section final are just nuts!!! I know anything can happen in a game but if that is your prediction all the crap on here about how good you guys are is just wrong!!

  32. Who said it was a 1 goal game

    Rangers-
ETB was up 9-4 with 4 minutes to go, when the ETB coach emptied his bench and Brewster left the first line in for a few meaningless goals. Final 9-6. Could have been 11-4 if ETB coach did what a lot of others would have, and left the first 2 lines in. You do the math how is that a 1 goal game!? I have seen ETB play 2 times, we all need to stop putting them down. They are young, good, fast and with young/improving goaltending. All of the League 1 & 2 bigots will get thier share of ETB over the next 2/3 years gauranteed.Be careful, they have more upside potential than any team in Section 1. And I do not root for them, nor have I seen them before this year, I just see a lot of HS games and this is my observation

  33. Ramapo Fan

My son plays for the Ramapo Saints Jr. B organization and we played in Philly a few weeks back and saw the Applecore Premier team playing against The Jr. Flyers 18 u team. They are a bunch of 15 and 16 year olds playing some of the top Jr teams in the East Coast. It’s clear that there not playing Jr. C because if they were playing that competition they would run through the ranks. Monroe Woodbury is an excellent team and I’d like to see them match up against Suffern. It would be a great matchup

  34. guy

Lopez plays for westchester viper midget minor AA
