Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley

Enrollments and links

January
31

Before I put the Section 1 book away, I thought I would post the enrollment numbers for the 30 hockey teams. I know this was a big subject a while ago. As an added bonus, some of the newer readers now know which teams are in which division. Enjoy.

Division 1
1. New Rochelle 2,449
2. North Rockland 2,108
3. White Plains 1,669
4. Mt. Pleasant 1,656
5. Lakeland/Panas 1,616
6. Mahopac 1,352
7. Rye Town/Harrison 1,344
8. East/Tuck/Bronx 1,228
9. Carmel 1,202
10. Cl. North 1,173
11. Suffern 1,135
12. Scarsdale 1,093
13. Mamaroneck 1,079
14. Sleepy H/Irvington 1,076
15. Cl. South 1,061

Division II
1. Somers/N Salem 1,050
2. Yorktown 1,043
3. Greeley 1,033
4. Fox Lane 995
5. Ossining 989
6. JFK/Put Valley 985
7. John Jay 979
8. Brewster 897
9. Pawling/Dover 824
10. Tappan Zee 777
11. Nyack 744
12. Byram Hills 618
13. Pearl River 618
14. Pelham 581
15. Rye 570

Pelham and Rye, the top two seeds in Division II, are the two smallest programs. And Suffern and Mamaroneck, the top two teams in the section, are two of the smallest five teams in Division I (30 fewer students would have moved the Tigers down to DII). Anything else pop out to people?

Also, I would like to put together a list of all the team web sites and general high school hockey web sites to add to my blogroll at the bottom. It should come in handy during the playoffs. E-mail me at hgutmann@lohud.com or post them here. For instance the E/T/B web site that was posted earlier, or the Section X web site www.northcountrysports.net

  1. wow

So Mamaroneck is 20 students from being in D2

  2. wow

    oops I mean 29 students

  3. LoHud Hockey

Harold, you may know the answer to this, but the enrollment numbers are based on grades 10-12, not 9-12, right?

Assuming that is the case, do we know what the 9th grade enrollment is at these schools? It would be pretty handy info to know that info in case, for example there are 30 less seniors than freshmen at Mamaroneck HS which would put them in D2 next year.

  4. LoHud Hockey

    Also, Suffern's website is http://www.ballcharts.com/suffernhockey

  5. Harold Gutmann

    LoHud Hockey,
The enrollment numbers are actually based on grades 9-11. So the key question is how many students are juniors, and how many incoming freshmen will there be next year?

  6. Rye and Pelham

Amazing what they do with such small school size.

  7. section 1 fan

huh, if these numbers are correct than why are there so many complaints about mergers, even Mt. pleasants 4 schools only make up 75% of New Rochelles.

  8. mamk

actually its 19 students and mamk would be in d2…if mamk was in d2 they wud be in first or second in the state considering queensbury is really good. harold can a school ask to be in d1…for example pelham? or is that not allowed bc if mamk went to d2 they wud clearly win or is it strictly on enrollment size?

  9. Taylor

School size has nothing to do with hockey. Rye and Pelham both have thriving youth hockey programs. Rye has 2 rinks and Pelham has the Ice Hutch right over the border in Mt Vernon. Also the Pelham kids who grew up playing at the Ice Hutch are just starting to reach High School. In the past Pelham practiced at Hommocks, Hammil, Murray, Playland, RCD and anywhere else they could get ice. Its all about the rinks and the youth hockey programs.

  10. Taylor

Oh yeah and $$$$. Hockey is not a cheap sport to play. Pelham and Rye are affluent hence more kids can play hockey.

  11. Harold Gutmann

    Mamk,
It's still 30 students. If Mamk had 19 fewer they would still be the 15th biggest school, and they need to drop below S/NS to be DII.
I doubt a team can move up (why would they want to?), and I can't imagine a team can move down. But since I like getting my mail and I don't want to incur the wrath of the postman, I will find out for sure.

  12. Terminator X

Wow, look at the size of New Rochelle. There are the biggest school, with a rink, (with parts of new rochelle being extremely wealthy) and they are still a league 4 power team School. What is going on there?

  13. Absolutely

New Ro should have gotten Ray Rice to play hockey.

  14. league 3 and 4

Hey Mt. Pleasnat nice win over South, did you get Douglass and Marenelli back or is this the team you lost to two league 4 teams with?

  16. mamk

thanks harold i understand about the 30 students drop. I would think if mamk was still as good and could even be the top d1 team, then why not be the section 1 champs in d1 instead of d2. however i think if they could play d2 they would bc that wud be an easy road except for pelham and rye to utica.

    Harold,
As I understand the Section 1, Division I and II placement process, the top half of the schools, using the State BEDS numbers (which are based upon grades 9-11), are placed in DI and the bottom half in DII. I do not know how they place the extra school in the event an odd number of total schools are playing hockey in Section 1. Another factor affecting the 2008-09 Division I/II placement is whether the existing "merged" school hockey programs will continue, whether any schools in those merged programs will go on their own or whether there will be additional merged programs. For purposes of the merged schools, Section 1 uses total BEDS enrollment. In each such merger scenario, the placement of Mamaroneck and other schools near the break point could be impacted.

The two posts by Taylor is poor blogging. Taylor, what about all the teams that have been playing at Sportorama for all these years? Only two of them Suffern and North have won, and all those teams have had access to youth hockey there with the Saints, house league etc. How about all the towns and communities around WSA and the vipers organization which is a great organization? Are all those high school teams successful? What about all the teams and schools surrounding the Brewster Arena? Great rinks, and superb youth hockey programs. They all have winning teams? no. Rye and Pelhams youth programs are B level at best. Mamaroneck has a robust and strong one. White Plains has had a rink for what 40 years and had the Plainsman organization and large school numbers and they are good this year but when was the last time they won or went to a section championship? Picking on Rye saying they have two rinks is a joke and unfair. You fail to mention Mamaroneck and White Plains who both have more players, better rink access and have long standing high level youth teams. New Rochelle has had New Roc Ice for what 8 years?, so what does it mean? Rye has a long history of winning and so does Pelham. Dont make it look like they have more advantages or tools available that others dont. Brewster Arena has become a hot bed for youth travel hockey, Sportorama has always been and so is WSA, the teams that have been winning are still the same. Obviously added rinks and youth hockey isn`t all that is needed to win in high school. If it was the teams, and there are a bunch of them, that have youth players in WSA, Brewster, and Sportorama, would all be winning and they are not. Oh, Regarding the $$$ comment, is Scarsdale not affluent? How about Pearl River? Greely? Byram Hills? Where is those teams championship?

    Ossining 4 – New Rochelle 3 OT

Tough played game. A lot of questionable calls both ways.

And what is the point of having the teams shake hands at the end of games if half the players line up then peal off half way through the line. Shows a total lack of class, especially when its the captain.

  20. section 1 fan

    To Dirt,

I feel your pain, the kids aren't being disrespectful, they just don't get it, it's like when the coaches make the kids wear shirts and ties, and they wear them along with their hats backwards and earings in their lips and eyebrows.

  21. #'s mean nothing

I was checking section VII and X and all their schools would be Div II based on the breakdown in section 1. Hard to figure how the state would set numbers based on school size in hockey.

  22. Travel Team

Pelham and Rye have the neccessary demographics and logistics needed to have a good hockey program. But so do many other schools. The differemce is that their traditiion of winning, program leadership, and organization make it an appealing thing for the elementary school kids and their parents to want to invest their effort in.

  23. bottom line

    Travel team,

thats the bottom line. I thought saying Rye and Pelham had superior resources or exclusive resources is a joke. With all the rinks in Westchester rockland and all the youth teams playing travel, and some strong travel at that, everyone pretty much is on equal footing.

  24. Travel Team

The same phenomena occurs in other sports. Mt. Vernon basketball, New Ro Football, Yorktown Lacrosse, Suffern Hockey, etc..

Other districts have similar demographics and logistics necessary to excel in these programs but these districts have put it together so that year-after-year thay are successful.

  25. for travel team

Agree with you travel team, but to minimize the work of those that work at their program year in and year out by saying consistant success is only based on $$$ and demographics is not fair. Many teams have just as good or better opportunities, whatever they may be, that the Ryes and Pelhams have.

  26. Taylor

One other factor is that for some of these towns they lose players to prep schools. Whether its Iona, Fordham and Rye Country Day or boarding schools in New England. If you can keep a lot of your players like Pelham and Rye can then you're at an advantage. The Ice Hutch is less than a mile from Pelham High School. They practice every day. The most promising players don't have to go away to school to have a chance to play in college.

  27. Taylor

Also the Ramapo Saints, for whom I played, get players from all over Rockland. Pelham Youth Hockey, Mamaroneck Youth Hockey and Rye Rangers get most of their players from their own towns. Clarkstown South may have only a few players who played youth hockey for Ramapo. Also Suffern recruits. Oh my, I know its a hard to believe they would do that. But yes, promising players from all over Rockland find a way to attend Suffern HS so they can play for the Mounties.

  28. draino says more bad posts

Taylor, you are off base again.
    Pelham players not at Pelham
there are two at Iona two brothers, not sure of the names. There are three at Taft? One is Reycroft? Before this kid they had lost the older brother as well. There is a goalie too, that is at prep school in Connecticut, not sure of his name. Reycroft Played vipers and was on Pelhams sectional champ team as an 8th grader. Last year wasnt Hertz and Ty Morgan at Fordham Pelham players? And what about one of the Shea brothers? wasnt one at Fordham? Pelham also lost a good defender to RCDS a few years back, not sure of his name but he played high end travel too. Rye loses kids too so you are not correct on that one

  29. straiten your facts

over 50% of new ro's students are on free or reduced lunch, compared to 0% in scarsdale. Mix that with no youth program the last 10 years and you get a small hockey market at NRHS
