Suffern-Mamaroneck was a great game with a great atmosphere that really could have gone either way. Now the Mounties play all their playoff games at Sport-O (and when was the last time they lost a postseason game there, or any game for that matter?) and have an easier matchup at every stage of the Division I tournament.
Video highlights by staff photographer Peter Carr can be found “by clicking here”:http://www.lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080208/VIDEO03/80208042/1110 and “my story is here.”:http://www.lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080209/SPORTS02/802090378/1110
Here are my thoughts on the other games: Rye Town/Harrison’s reconfigured first line put in six more goals against Mount Pleasant. The Ice Cats need at least a tie in their last game against Lakeland/Panas to qualify as the No. 8 seed in DI. Somers/North Salem scored three goals against Kennedy/Putnam Valley, the most K/PV has allowed all season. Now the teams will play again in 10 days in the first round of the DII tournament. Chris McIndoe made 52 saves but John Jay defeated Clarkstown North 2-0, all but assuring that Mahopac will host the Rams in the DI quarterfinals. And last but certainly not least, Iona Prep clinched a spot in the CHSHL finals, while Stepinac will play an elimination game against Farrell Sunday, 8 p.m. at the Ice Hutch.
On a completely different note, I will be going back to D.C. for the next few days. My grandmother, Bernice Gutmann, passed away in her sleep at the age of 91.
Not surprisingly, my two favorite hobbies growing up (besides Nintendo) were writing and sports, and Bernice did her best to foster both. She worked for an ad agency and got tons of free magazines, and she made sure that every sports-themed one ever created eventually found its way to my room. When I was young, she also moved from Great Neck to the Maryland suburbs to be closer to us, which I am very grateful for.
I still hope to check the blog, but I don’t know how much I’ll be able to update. So don’t be shy with game reports, injury updates, and any other thoughts from this weekend’s games.

there was not 2 goals scored with the net off tonight at the stepinac farrel game. for some reason everytime theres a rush the stepinac net comes off but on the goals it was all fair . sunday night is going to be a good game
Hats off to Iona. Good luck on two well fought games. Fordham is young and will be back next season.
Did Farrell dominate? Was Reagan in net? Does anyone know?
Harold,
On behalf of the Iona Prep family were sorry to hear about your grandmother, Bernice Gutmann. Our prayers and thoughts are with you and your family.
Take care!
a stupid move by lopez he head butted mackenzie with 55 seconds to go in the game he will be watching the finals from the stands
IONA FORDHAM,
All I can say is McKenzie was the goon at the end, Real classy move. ANd you know what I’m talking about. Lopez was wrong and will pay but I expected more from McKenzie. Not a great way to end his High School Career. He should be real proud of his actions…..
Sorry for not wishing sooner my condolances to Harold on the passing of his grandmother.
Thanks for the coverage tonight and year round Harold. Much more importantly, much sorrow for the passing of your grandmother,Bernice Gutmann. Sports is a nice escape from the real world, but then that world comes knocking. Our condolences to you and yours.
anyone know how many games lopez is going to get..were all the penalties deserved? did the officials control the situtation? wish i could have made this game!!!
Nobody really dominated the game, it was even. Up and down all game, very entertaining. Reagan played. The score was 5-3 with an empty net goal at the very end. It should be a tough game on Sunday.
My condolences on your grandmothers passing.
lopez is hopefully only going to get 1 game due to the appeal filed. not only did mackenzie not show any class but also all the other rams on the ice were. mike spillane left his feet to punch one of the gaels in the face. there was no head butting, chuck got in his face and tried to fight him. he did the right thing by not throwing any punches back, poor officiating led to this and will be resolved correctly soon enough.
anyone know what really happened in the crowd as well?
A couple of kids from both sides went at each other. Between the Ice Hutch SWAT team security and parents it was broken up without any punches thrown or kids even getting more than a couple of feet from each other. No real story there but of course it could of been a brawl if calmer heads didn’t prevail.
Lopez gets 3 game suspension.
For the headbutting, Lopez got a 3 game suspension
iona was very running around all game taking stupid penalties especially in the 3rd. no way will the league turn over the suspension.
Harold,
Condolences on the passing of your grandma. Sounds like she was a great lady. You are very fortunate to have had her in your life.
The stupid penalties you are referring to were not dirty, they were just lazy hooks and holds so i don’t think that will have any effect on the suspension.
What McKenzie did was real Classless. He’s a Senior, his last game, Iona was winning 5 to 1. 55 seconds left. Iona Had started to clear their bench…Then McKenzie takes a run from accross the rink and hits Lopez from behind. Lopez was wrong and the Refs (Greaney BOY”S) were the only one’s that saw the infraction.
Here’s a question: Why was McKenzie on the ice? with 55 seconds to go? Did he think there was going to be a comeback or was this his plan? Iona had all their starters off the ice…Why didn’t Fordham?
This is a tactic many seniors have done in the past.. Last game, we’re losing….so I’m taking someone with me. He gets Lopez out and he skates away to College. WAY TO END YOUR HIGH SCHOOL CAREER! AT LEAST YOU CAN BRAG ABOUT THIS NEXT YEAR AT YOUR THANKSGIVING DINNER!
Doesn’t matter anymore, What you’re not talking about is the actual game. Sure Lopez will be missed but Iona has alot of horses to get the job done.
Iona played alot better last night versus Thusday nights game. Molinaro and King had two apiece and Traficante had the other. The strength of their team looks like it’s their Defense. Two very strong lines with McCabe, Shipper, Gillispie and Kirinic.
Either way, if it’s Farrell or Stepinac in the finals, it’s going to be tough for all teams.
Last note: I do agree with Have Fun in College blogger above and I wonder why McKenzie was out their in the last 55 seconds? It made no sense…
Think your a little confused about what happened last night. Because of what happened …..with 55 seconds left in the game—now one of Ionas starters is out for the whole next round becuase he headbutted a kid (and I’ll repeat the time again…..with 55 seconds left in the game). Once the game was out of reach, Iona coaches shouldve never had their starters out.
Fordham/Iona … if Lopez was out during that time … why wouldn’t McKenzie be out also? This was some of these kids last game …. why wouldn’t a coach put them out?
One of the reasons why the Suffern Mamaroneck game was so good was that the refs did not interfere with the game. Time and time again, the rockland refs show superior judgement, and let the kids play. The last Mamk Suffern game featured countless penalties and 6 power play goals… it was ridiculous… as most games in westchester are. If Mamk play Suffern again in the championship.. both rockland and westchester will have 1 ref doing the game. There is only 1 ref in westchester that is capable of doing the game… he does college games and is the best ref in westchester. It is unfortunate that no other ref in westchester can handle a big game like that… but the championship game should not be marred by phantom calls and ticky tack penalties. I would rather have two rockland refs than have one of the westchester refs (except for that one guy) do the game.
harold,
sorry to hear about your grandma. my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. youve really shown your dedication to section one hockey making this a great season once again
great display of sportsmanship conklin. taking hagan down and taunting him with one second left in the game shows alot. mamaroneck didnt win, but they outshot/outplayed.
Are usually one sided and very slanted. They also call what they want to call with no regard to rule changes or rule emphasis. To also add they are like the private and catholic league and its always the same five or six guys reffing all those games.
Mamaroneck Cry Baby’s…....When you left last night didn’t notic if your stars were flipping us the bird? Classy….
I would love to see how many ref DQ kids in Rockland as opposed to Westchester Refs who are angry little men who look for reasons to DQ kids.
What, did a kid just roll his eyes at me??? DQ
DID a coach just question me???? DQ
DID a player just bump a kid near the boards??? DQ
Did a player just shove someone after the whistle?? DQ
Their job is not to DQ players unnecessarily, their job is to try and keep the game moving and prevent bad things from escalating. No refs in the entire state call 20-40 penalties per game like Westchester refs. It is a farce.
hey math,
before you came on here everything was positive and both sides think it was a well played game and suffern just got the extra goal to win. if all you have are negative comments why dont u just leave. im sure conklin taking hagan down was just like at the other end when someone took down hiller hard into the boards. hagan was prob saying something to him. noone is innocent. Great game last night by both teams. thanks to everyone on here for staying positive.
I’d be angry if I had to live in Rockland county to.
Hey Word: Rockland wouldn’t want you.
I’m glad the game was played at SOR, because if that game was played at the Hommocks, then for the one gaol that the tigers had you would of seen 6 assists. Definitely at the Hommocks, the scorers padded the stats.
Went to one game earlier at the Hommocks and player from Mamaroneck stole the puck and scored. They game two assist on tht unassisted goal.I’m surprised that when Mamaroneck lost ot Monroe Woodbury earlier, that they didn’t hand out alot of assists to the Tigers in tht 5 to 0 beating from MW…. LOL DOn’t worry score keeper, we’ll keep your scoring secrets!
Haven’t seen any of the TigerVets on here
Brackets!
They are subject to change depending on Greeley, Ossining, Pawling, Sleepy, CN, Mahopac, & Mt Pleasant depending on if they make it or where they are seeded, but as of now, here they are:
D1:
http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=257314&tclass=
D2:
http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=257315&tclass=Section%201%20Division%202
So i guess the Mamk-suffern game was a lot closer than people thought 2-1, if MW killed Mamk 5-0 Suffern is going to have their hands full
Again playoff time and talk turns to the refs. As always the penalties should come to them not to go and look for them.Enforce the rules. Call the obvious,(scoring chance, injury potential ect)
EXPERIENCE is gained by doing games that’s why there are a limited number of refs to do playoffs. Coaches throughout the season evaluate their games and refs are assigned based on merit.
Every team has a bad night. Mamaronecks was the 5-0 loss to MW. Suffern tied a mediocre Rye team 2-2. A Rye team that did not even get the #1 seed in D2. Rye is in what 4th or 5th place? And Suffern is the #1 team in the state in D1?? Oh and MW is the defending D2 state champion??? So whoever the dope is that keeps bringing up the 5-0 score, keep showing how dopey you are. Because by your dumb logic, Mamaroneck is better than suffern because Mamaroneck beat Rye 2 times and Suffern has not beaten the once yet. Everybody, especially Suffern knew they would have to rely on Natoli to win the game… and guess what. Natoli was great, if he wasnt, the score is 4-2 Mamaroneck.
Suffern v. Mamaroneck- Suffern is 2-0, Mamaroneck is 0-2
vs. top 15 teams in the state for D1 as per http://www.ushsho.com/nyrank.htm
Suffern is 5-0.Aquinas, Greece, Mamaroneck, Mamaroneck, Liverpool
Mamaroneck is 0-3, Suffern, Suffern, MW
Rye is a final 4 team from last season, like MW, so if you want to legitimize your loss to MW by claiming what MW did last season, you have to look at what Rye did last season as well right??
who cares who they have to rely on. to be honest, i dont even think suffern played that well last night, looked a little flat and still got the W.
youre lucky it wasnt in westchester or all the interferences and trips would have been called and Mamo would have spent the night in the box again, yet Chap complains about an icing? an icing that only he disputes? youre right coach, the alleged disputed icing is why your team only scored 1 goal in a loss…
The job of the ref is enforce the rules. The rules that all teams and coaches are all in agreement with. The rules are set by the state. The assumption is that the teams learn the rules and abide by them. Once on the ice in rockland, those refs decide what they will enforce and what theywill let go. Its not each individuals referee set of rules, its one set, and the refs should call them all uniformally. Its confusing to have the rockland refs call things they want to call and ignore rules because theydo not agree with them. As far as “keep the ame moving” surprised by your remark. Do you want them not to call penalties to keep the game moving? If your name Pelicans indicates your team I am surprised as your team Pelham has done awesome on its power play for years. Matter of fact the last three or four seasons your Pelhams powerplay has almsot been automatic so I donnt understand
The last 2 years North was the league champion and lost in the sectionals… I have a feeling that it will happen again with Mamaroenck beating suffern (the league cahmps). If you saw last nights game…and you werre honest with yourself… you would think the same thing.
With ETB loss today to Pawling 12-9, that means NR clinches league 3. Congrats Red Raiders
suffern won the league and the section
Congrats NR on the League 3 title. They are a very decent team that can give a Legaue 1 (other than Suffern) or League 2 team a game. Kudos.
last night was small potatos compared to the section championship game. Mamaroneck will be back, and they will throw another 30+ shots on net. It is just a matter of time before they go in. It is very hard to beat a team that is better than you 3 times. And Mamaroenck IS better… and all of suffern saw it last night. Yes you won… thanks to Natoli and Natoli only. But everyone that witnessed that game knows who is better… unless you are in denial.
thats funny, all i heard was blah blah blah blah blah blah blah suffern beat us again
I was at the game and i did not see the headbutt or the facemask but in this case i have to side with the referees.. those 2 brothers do one hell of a job in the big spots. fordham was right to have mackenzie on the ice the last min of high school carere.. iona should have had their 4 line out there just to take up space and time
Keep denying… while you build a statue for Natoli.
For a team that was so confident, they sure were celebrating a lot after the game. Almost seemed like it was suffern who won in an upset.
Nobody, not even anonymous people on the blog from Suffern have said that Suffern outplayed Mamaroneck. Kinda tells ya something cinderella. Keep laughing, just keep a box of Kleenex handy at Sutters on Feb. 25th.
celebrating a lot?
there was no pile on? they always hug around natoli after everygame…because that was what last night was..a regular game for suffern, while last night was the biggest game for mamaroneck in 4 years
It is a shame that the mamaroneck fans don’t have as much class/brains as their coach and players. If you know anything about hockey you would say that while natolie played very well, he DID NOT in any stretch of the word, STEAL the game for suffern. You lost, oh ya twice!! so take defeat with dignity and go figure out how to win next time. You bring up natoli as the ONLY player on suffern, I would bet anything that suffern would not suffer nearly as much if they lost him as you would if you lost connor. Lets recap the 2 games..
Suffern 7 Connor 4 !!!
Next year neither team will have connor or natoli. I guarantee Mamk wins everything. But forget next year… Suffern should worry about this year and the horrible feeling they will have if they choke away their perfect season in the sectional championship.
in the 2 Suffern wins over Mamaroneck this season:
Suffern has had 5 different goal scorers, Mamaroneck has had 1
Suffern has had 4 players with 2 or more points, Mamaroneck has 2.
Where is this mamaroneck depth i heard about all week?
4 of the 6 mamaroneck players with points in the season series with suffern had just 1 assist each. Suffern has had players from their second line score, including last night.
Ruthberg and Salt each have 2 goals and 3 assists for 5 points each
Connor and Conklin each have 4 pts
Hiller and Hagan have 2 pts each
Also, in those 2 games, Natoli has stopped 94% of shots faced, compared to 85% for Glasser
thats the MATH that counts aside from the score and the records…shots on goal dont matter
Suffern’s two goal scorers last night will be back next season, NO ONE WHO WILL BE ON MAMARONECK NEXT SEASON (assuming Connor isnt ‘left behind’) has scored on Suffern this season
Congratulations to Sufferns Chris Wynne. He got to play in his 2nd game of the year this past week. Castleton lists him as a foward. Go’s on to prove two things. One – Just because you don’t play right away, just keep working. Two, you never know where a college team might place you so, if you can play multiple positions, that may help your cause.
Congratulations to Josh Silverman from Mamaroenck High school. He got a doctorate degree in Physics, and is in the running for the nobel peace prize…. ooops oh i did not realize this is a suffern blog dedicated to people who idolize high school hockey players and keep their stats all day. Sad… just sad. I hope for sufferns/sloatsburgs sake they win the state because that seems to be the only thing going well in those towns.
Thanks to all the Mamaroneck Fans who like to trash Suffern on this forum. Nothing seems to get Suffern up for these games like your enlightening posts! Keep ‘em coming….we’ll keep printing ‘em for the locker room. Thanks again!
The physics blog probably doesn’t exist on the Journal news, this is a hockey blog. If you want to extoll accomplishments, or spew jealousy, I understand bumper stickers work. Sad, just sad.
hey thy crushed, that doesnt matter because next season theres no natoli, or should i say no suffern
and this season there was no Wynne, Clark or Suffern, and the season before there was gonna be no Daniels twins, no Kastor, no Yorke and No Suffern, and the year before that there was not vertullo and no christianson and no suffern…etc…etc…etc
but you had natoli, which is what im trying to say…
any updates on North/South?
Hey get a life,
I am no suffern fan, I could care less who wins between them and mamaroneck. What I am is a travel coach, I run clinics, and I do a college evaluation camp in Boston in the summer. I love college hockey, and each year I see more and more of our players succeeding at the next level. In all my blogs I have given my opinions on how to get there….nothing more. I lived in Michigan for a while, I like it here much more, but what I do miss is hockey on the front of every newspaper.
Anyone know the link to the Sectional Bracket?
league champions
the difference is, that while North won the league the last two seasons, if you include playoffs, Suffern was 2-1 against North each of those years (1-1 in regular season each year and won both section titles), so while North won the league, they were actually 2-4 against suffern those two years
this year, suffern swept the season series against mamaroneck, so its not a good comparison
Have Fun in College,
r u serious, were u even watchig the game. The puck was on the boards and the 2 players, (Mackenzie and Lopez) were fighting for it. After the whistle there was pushing and then Lopez grabbed a Fordham player and headbutted him. Protecting his teammate Mackenzie faught back. Im not justifying his actions but ur talking like he went out to take Lopez out. And so when u say he was trying to take Lopez, u r absolutely wrong. Lopez had full control over his actions and he didnt headbutt mackenzie the kid he was fighting with wasnt even in the fight. And hope you brag about it at college he won 2 championsips with fordham i think hell have alot more to talk about then “taking Lopez down with him”. And you act like he started it please he was giving a hit and in the spirit of rivalry BOTH kids were talking trash and started pushing and thats when Lopez grabbed a kid not even in the fight and headbutted him.
Had to get that off my chest. Other than that the series was awesome. The 1st game was one of the best ive seen in a long time and it was a hard working and great job by both teams congrats to iona and good luck in the finals
to put all comments about the fordham, iona game last night, there was no headbutting. i am on the iona team, i was on the ice, lopez finsihed his check, mackenzie became frustrated with the pyhsical play lashed out, started chirping at him and before either of the referres could get invloved they were going at it. he did not headbutt anyone he was protecting himself though his actions were not of proper thought, i would not blame him. stakes were high, intesisty level was out the door, and the adrenaline was pumping, do not get at lopez, he is now serving his suspension and hopefully iona will succeed without him. anyone want to see a real game, make sure your at the season opener next year the day after thanksgiving. that should be fun to watch.
Wonder if they would of made that call if Stepinac was playing? Don’t think so!
Rye beat Glens Falls today 6-1
Sorry to hear about your grandmother Harold. Our thoughts are with your family. Rye finished a successful regular season upstate run at 4-0-1 with a 6-1 win at the Glenns Falls Civic center earlier today. Eck, Rogers and Mundinger had 2 apiece. The Civic Center is nicer than the Aud. Hope Rye makes one more trip upstate in March. Glenns Falls not ranked this year, but they did play #1 NYS DII Queensbury close in a 2-1 loss last week. Now the Garnets get to look forward to hosting Suffern for senior nite.
North/South updates?
I heard Clarkstown South over Clarkstown North 1-0 and McIndoe had 106 saves.
dPW-
I posted them earlier today, but here they are again:
They are subject to change depending on Greeley, Ossining, Pawling, Sleepy, CN, Mahopac, & Mt Pleasant depending on if they make it or where they are seeded, but as of now, here they are:
D1:

D2:

South beat North tonight 1-0. The fact that North can’t even score against a bottom League 3 team is amazing.
Caught the end of the CN vs CS game. South won but don’t tell me how good their seniors are. CN played what had to be freshman for most of the game I saw. I saw the same South players on the ice the 3rd period. But, they won the game. CN looks to be aweful next year, CS will be worse. What a shame. Two mediocre programs.
Pelican bet you cant even skate…why dont you go out and ref since you know so much? I have seen plenty of quality westchester refs and some really sad rockland refs who dont even know the rules. Bet you attitude is let them play as long as no one is bleeding on the ice. typical moron who has no clue. one ref in westchester ya right
hey pelican can you even skate? why dont you go out and ref since you know so much. Bet you have the let them play no one is bleeding attitude, very bright. I would take westcheter refs any time, half the rockland guys dont even know the rules let alone take the test like the westchetsr refs do. As for one ref there are more than one who can do the games….maybe you should put on your double runners and get out there.
strange both post went through…said first was bounced
hey crushed, one of the best goalies Suffern ever had (and Suffern has had a whole bunch of tremendous goalies) was Anthony Vertullo. I think Anthony may have had the highest save percentage in Suffern history. However, because there were goalies ahead of him when he was in 9th, 10th and 11th grade, he didn’t play until he was a senior. Don’t assume you know the talent level of Suffern’s backup goalies (they are good) and don’t assume Suffern is going to collapse next year without Natoli. Tommy is an incredible force, and we will miss him a lot, but if you think next year will be a down year for Suffern, think again. As They Crushed said, Suffern didn’t collapse after the Daniels twins left (and they are D1 hockey players). Depth baby.
Will be a thrill to see that great Suffern team for first time Wed nite. Rye has its work really cut out for itself to say the least but they’ve got alot of guts and will give it their best shot for sure.
Here’s to both teams playing the best games they can!
has two tough regular season games left – at Rye, which it tied earlier in the season at Sport-O, and against Monroe-Woodbury.
The Rye Suffern game is essentially just a tune up game. The game means nothing to Rye as far as playoff seedings are concerned. I guess they will be up for the challenge of breaking the winning streak. Suffern of course wants the streak to continue and does not want to lose any confidence going in to the playoffs. After an incredibly tight game vs mamaroneck, Suffern will want to put Rye away and not have a big emotional game. Obviously Monroe woodbury has a shot to beat Suffern, MW is very good, but I don’t think they get caught up in the section 1 intensity and as always they will play everybody, 4 lines of offense and 3 lines of D. Both games should be entertaining.
Mamaroneck has already played 24 games, so their season is over until playoffs, unless they plan on scrimmaging someone.
Suffern will be very good next year with Hill and Hiller leading the offense, Mccarron and Norwin on D. Gabriel and Rice are both good goalies and one of them will need to step up next year.
If and this is a big IF willows decides to come back and Shuman decides to play next year with Mcindoe in Goals for North we would then see this great rivarly revived for one more year. If not North is in for a LONG LONG season again next year.
What are the chances of Willows & Shuman returning to play for North next year? I’ve heard the rumors but not sure how much to believe? Are they just rumors?
And yes, if they return the Suffern-North matchups would be rgeat again.
if anyone wants to see the mariners midget major team (king, mccabe, dimario, datino, etc.), they have a semifinal playoff game against clarkstown 10:15am at playland, saturday, 2/16…lots of talent on that ice from both…
also…
game 1 of the chshl championship has been determined
-saturday, 2/16, 7:30pm, ice hutch
chshl division b game that is local
-thursday, 5:15, murray’s, mcclancy-st. francis…st. francis will probably fight with st. joe’s, xavier and talented molloy for that division’s championship
by the way,
manhattanville’s 2 games this weekend at playland against lebanon valley (consistently weak team in ecac west) was like watching a clinic…8-1 and 10-0
valiants will be tested next weekend…2 in elmira…
the thursday b game (mcclancy-st. francis) at murray’s will be followed by an entertaining jv game…iona-stepinac at 7
another local jv game that will be entertaining (all chshl jv games are played in flushing except when iona-stepinac-fordham face each other)
saturday, 2/16, 5:45, iona-fordham at playland
I can remember when Lebananon Valley was good. They recruited everybody, told them all they were going to play, and then had a tryout of about 100 kids. This was back about 6 years ago. I guess one of two things must have happened. Either people started relizing what they were doing and didn’t feel like going through a hundred person tryout anymore…....or they don’t recruit at all anymore.
you people are crazy to think that Mike Greaney really cares what team is playing in the game. to say he would not have called a headbutt on stepinac is abusurd!!! first off he went to mount saint michael and his brother steve did go to stepinac and he graduated in 2005… as far as refereeing goes mike greaney is one of the. top up and coming officials in the COUNTRY and his brother does a nice job.. lets not run this kids name through the mud here..he is the best referee in this area by far..i have known him for a long time. i am an iona parent and i trust that he saw a headbutt..lets stick to talking about the game
These are definately two of the better refs around. They can outskate the players and for around here that is rare. They are two no nonsense refs who can ref any game I am involved with.
If 12 teams make the playoffs, how many get a bye? I think it is 4. Anyone know?
MVP race, by county. Whos leading the MVP race and why. (in my OPINION)
Rockland
1. Natoli, well because he’s Natoli.
2. McIndoe, I would make him MVP if his team gave him some support. But he is by far the most valuable player to any team in the section.
3. Any of the Suffern starters, but they are a long shot because they are a team, not a few individuals.
Westchester
1. Conner, would be a runaway with this one, but those who pick the MVP could possibly be upset with the “momentary character breakdowns”.
2. Glasser, good goalie on the winning team, always a chance.
3. Eck, bit of a long shot but still possible, doesnt lead in #s but is more valuable to his team than the other two.
Honorary Mentions: Rui (not his fault hes league 2, but he did miss a lot of games)...Novick (very good)....Pelham (many good players, no MVPS tho because they play so well as a team….the rest of leagues 2-4 (im sure there are some great players here, but i dont see the JN giving MVP to someone outside of league 1.)
Wow like a greaney brothers love fest in here….....didnt they do the Peterborough-Charlestown game a few years ago up in Peterborough??
yes thats right, im bringing up the MVP race again…..sorry,
That’s right you’re bring it up because your a RYE Parent trying to get your player ELECTED.(AGAIN) Stop your POLITICING!!!!
Here’s a list of Players that are more valuable to their teams then Eck! Novick, Datino, King, DiMaggio, Sigona, Morasco, Rui, Oliverio,ALfonzetti, are alot more valuable to their teams!
They are True leaders for their teams and they have PRODUCED all season.
Next you’ll be pushing Rogers for Top defensemen and He hasn’t played defense this season. You guys from Rye just keep going.
Monroe, you lost to Rye Town, Mamo beat them twice, you tied Saker colony, Mamo beat them twice. two sides to every story
Sigona could be a candidate also. He led the way, and kept WP strong while Rui was gone?
Despite Mamk beating Shaker twice and RTH, Monroe played RTH without its full team, hence why they lost to them, and beating mamk shows their depth as a team and they will give Suffern a run for their money.
Can anyone explain why the Rye player keeps getting mentioned? He is not leading the league in scoring is he? He is on a 5th place team in league 1 correct?
Marasco and Novick are my top kids. Alfonzetti is only good if he has the puck, if not he just stands there.
What about,
You’re absolutely Right. Sigona should be considered. How a Rye Parent can say that their player is more valuable to their team then the others mentioned above is an asinine statement to make.
You have players contibuting the whole season not just 4-5 games. These parents from Rye should stop drinking that Rye Kool-aid! It’s definitely affecting their Brain…
Honestly, How and Why would Eck ever be rated over these players? How in the world could you rate your player over the following players (Novick, Datino, King, DiMaggio, Conner, Sigona, Morasco, Rui, Oliverio, ALfonzetti, Reagan Glaser). These players can take over a game.
Rye Parents= Politicing.
Take off your BLINDERS and give other players the respect they deserve.
To WOW,
Um, i’m not a rye parent or player….but i have seen/played with almost every kid youve mentioned.
I was not slighting them by leaving ppl out, just put up my OPINION that i am entitled to. Also i didnt include the chshl so sorry if your son plays in that league. I dont usually rip on other kids, but i didnt think adding Eck, as a quote “long shot” would get everyones panties up in a bunch. let me go down your list real quick,
(i havent played/seen enough catholic so i excluded them from my original list)
I recognize how good novick is, but i gave the slight edge to Eck, mainly because he makes the clutch plays, and is usually an individual effort while Novick is on one of the best lines in the section.
If you can read (which im starting to doubt) I actually put Conner at #1 on the list, so you just sound dumber.
Sigona should have been included in the honorable mentions, but like i said it probably wont go to a league 2 player.
Morasco, never seen him play so i cant say much, basically back to the whole JN will stick with a L1 mvp.
Rui is one of the best in the section, and if it went to someone outside L1 it would be him, but hes missed 1/3 of their season.
Oliverio, seen him play, solid player but wasnt impressed, got shut down pretty easliy. (both of them).
Alfonzetti, some nice hands, only saw him once or twice, but didnt look like he did much defensively/ without the puck.
Now that i explained that, realize im not politicKing. Just explaining my OPINION. Also i put Glasser and Conner at the top 2, and Eck as a long shot. So please shut up WOW, you just make yourself look like an idiot, and your probably embarrassing your son, luckily for him this is an anonymous blog.
anyone predict any upsets in sectionals i think it could be interesting especially in the early rounds when teams get over confident any predictions?
Carlos…...............Boozer
Yeah WOW,
You’ve got this “MVP thing” down dont you WOW!!!. Harold,PLEASE delete all the other blogs except for WOW’s. Who cares about what other people think??
no one has any predictions?
Personally, I think RTH can pull out a win over WP
wow, how did that get there, lol, anyway I think RTH will pull out a win against WP, they won’t make the same mistakes they made last time, the Titans have come a long way and have seen some tough competition
i dont think there will be any upsets fruit fly. i think it will pretty much go by seeds. possibly wp with a upset just because they are seeded lower then deserved since they are league 2. i think there is no doubt the finals will be suffern vs mamaroneck with suffern finishing the series 3-0.
rth over wp isnt a upset based on their seeds
So now we have two Know it alls from Rye (yes thats right, im bringing up the MVP race again, and Slacrosse)
Tell me that you weren’t giving Conner a backhand slap when you were blogging before. ANd Novick’s effort in the OT win to beat Rye wasn’t CLUTH. He came up Big!You have to give him more credit. Connor and Novick are #1 and #3 in scoring for League 1! Hugh contributors to their teams!
You may think you’re praising these other players but it’s very clear that you don’t repspect them.
P.S. By the way who won the MVP last year from League 2, so SIgona and Rui are also logical choices and they mean more to their respective teams.
Answer: Donahue(League 2)
novick also has 5 pts against pawling and 6 against mt pleasant
other teams dont play such an easy, point-potent non-league schedule
Donahue got it because he sent his team to the state final 4
if rui or phil siggy send their team from league 2 to the state final 4, then one of them should be MVP, otherwise, give it up
NO-Vick,
Novick: 4 goals 2 assists vs Rye
Eck: 1 goal 1 assist vs RT/H
RT/H Wins 7 to 6. Who was Mr. Cluth in this game when it counted! LOL
In response to Respect, yeah i respect those guys, thats why i mentioned them.
Novick is a great player and a good kid. I hope he does well. Don’t want to get into the scheduling issue but it looks like Rye’s is more competitive than RTH, not discrediting Novicks points but they may be a little easier against pawling than teams like Whitesboro and RFA. But in MY OPINION i chose Eck over him but just barely.
I personally believe Conner will and should win the MVP.
you guys are idiots, because i mention my pick for a dark horse in the MVP race, you freak out. Also Rui nd Sigona have a chance if one of them will step up HUGE in the playoffs, and Rui would probably replace Eck in my top 3 if he had shown up to all of his games.
Maybe you should realize what a blog is…a place to post your opinions.
“CLUTCH”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! opps
“CLUTCH”!!!!!!!!! OPPS
but why does that game matter?
the team in their division that RTH trailed all season was Mamaroneck. and in 2 games against the team they were chasing, Novick scored 2 total points
Rye was chasing Pelham all season in D2
in those two games Eck had 5 pts
clutch when it matters
Don’t think you know this, but to Rye, the Pelham games are much much more important than RTH.
Maybe if Harrison had it’s own team it would be bigger, especially now that RTH is goin downhill next year. But Pelham has always been a great team, Rye always looking to knock it off and both teams play hard.
I think Wp will make it to the Final 4. They have to beat new roh, then a tough RTown team to get there. I think they will pull it off, and play mamo in the semis
and to yeah baby
eck has been clutch in way more games, suffern (2 goals), pelham 5 points, last years playoffs scoring 2 goals in the last minute to beat ossinging. cant remember all of them but ya hes clutch enough for us.
Jeez. Is anyone else tired of people campaigning for their sons for MVP or the players themselves? The coaches know the players best, and they will decide the MVP. Natoli will get it, unless Mamaroneck beats Suffern in the championship and Connor gets the game winner. Nobody else has a shot.
step is up 3 – 0 with 624 left in 1 st period. farrell calls a timeout
Thought the games started at 8:10.
step is up 3 – 0 at the start of the 2nd
kitty kats,
there is no dispute really in rockland. there are TWO mvps. one from rockland and one from westchester/putnam. natoli is basically a lock for rockland. these people are campaining for the other mvp
step is up 3 – 0 at the start of the 3rd. farrell believes they scored 2x in the 2nd but refs see it differently. farrell outplays step in 2nd
Stepinac 3-0! Start of 3rd
step is up 4 – 0 with 847 left in 3rd
farrell scores 1, 541 left
Well then connor gets it for Westchester. I don’t want to hear that he “put up his middle finger”. Who cares, I am 100% sure that the other candidates have done that too in their lives. He is the best player, and a big reason that Mamaroenck is the #4 team in the state of NY. The kids in leagues 2, 3, and 4 did not play the competition that he did, it is not their fault, but that is the way the cookie crumbles.
I can’t wait for a new blog topic. The playoffs can’t start quick enough.
step wins 4 – 1
I just found out that posting two links in one post gets viewed as spam by the blog, so I’m not sure if the updated brackets have been getting through when posted earlier today. So here are the D1 brackets (Subject to change if Mt. Pleasant and/or Sleepy Hollow does not qualify:
http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=257314&tclass=
And here’s the D2 bracket:
http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=257315&tclass=Section%201%20Division%202
Stepanac won4-1. I have to admit that step has discepilne. Farrel tried to get them all nite and they walked away.
So take away any non league points and Novick is still up there. MVP scoring and weighting should only be done based on league games. He didnt schedule Pawling…lol. He comes up big in every big game and every big play. Lets look at the scoring race only within league games.
Hey “My Hockey Team”... how do you like #17 from STEP?
Step dominated 1st. 2nd Period Farrell Played good attacking hockey and a bit rough.
3rd period was DISGUSTING by Farrell. No class, white trash Staten Island. They went at guys after whistles, tried to coax Step into taking penalties by hitting them behind the refs back, #66 did that to #3 in front of Step bench by spearing him in the back ofater the whistle but the ref was looking right at him and caught him. Then the last 3 mins it was all about Farrell giving headlocks to all the Stepinac players in the corners and everywhere throughout the ice and the Stepinac players were putting their arms out or behind them to show the ref they werent doing anything. And has the Farrel players were playing dirty the Step coach was yelling at his own players to make shire non of them would be caught in a fighting penalty so that no one would miss the Finals with Iona.. what class Stepinac has. Stanten Island you sore losers and losers as players and gentleman and the balme goes to the parents and to the coaching staff you should be ashamed of yourself. Nice Catholic upbringing you are teaching your boys. If you cant beat them on the cie, try to beat them up. LOSERS.
GO Stepinac and bring that Champioinship Trophy HOME!!!
You posted a 3pm game time for Rye on 2/22/08 for the playoff game in your bracket – where did you get this start time from? Is this accurate or were you just putting in a placeholder? Please respond.
Suffern and MW could not meet in the finals, they can meet in the state final 4 though
That’s the info I was given. I would imagine with next week being President’s week and the schools having off, that is why they are playing during the day.
To lohud. Manhattanville College has a 7:30 PM game at Playland on Friday Feb 22. Maybe that is why the DII Quarter final hosted by Rye needs to start in the afternoon.
OK. No politicing for MVP. Lets do a list of players with specific skills us fans all like to see. We are talking pure entertainment here. Some of this stuff is only seen in practice or picked up after watching a particular team thru many games in a season. My list is not meant to be exhaustive. Please just add to the list rather than dump on the players already on the list. And, my list will be “east of river” biased (where I live), league 1 and 2 centric (the teams I see) and not include many Suffern players as they are a super group that plays a more traditional, defensive minded, unflashy game.
DANGLERS:
Rui
Eck
King
SHOOTERS (quick release, lethal accuracy):
Connor
Novick
Hagan (ETB)
SLAP SHOOTERS (who has the biggest blue line bomb):
Hagan (Mamo)
Keegan
HITTERS (Open ice more important than slamming players into the boards-it takes superior footwork and stability on skates):
Ojeda
Rogers
McCabe
SKATERS (quick, explosive, elusive):
Connor
Urban
Hiller
Molinaro
King
Ojeda
Rogers
Sigona

Harold,
You had a cool grandma. You were lucky and it’s nice you appreciated her. Sorry about your loss.
Would you please post the criteria for MVP used by the deciders? As you can see, different people on the blog have different ideas as to what matters. It would be helpful to see the actual criteria.
a pretty good argument for those annoying neck guards..
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/hockey/nhl/02/10/zednik.panthers.ap/index.html?cnn=yes
i somewhat agree
but, the suffern players you left out are just as flashy, as good a shooters, great skaters, hustlers, etc
but they are willing to sacrifice that for the good of the team to play a defensive system, its not that they dont have the same or better skills as the players you mention, but they have the discipline to adapt to a championship system, sacrificing their own personal glory
alphabetical order per group
The Top 3:
Connor (mamaroneck)
King (iona)
Salt (suffern)
The Next 7:
Datino (step)
Eck (rye)
Encarnaco (wp)
Hiller (suffern)
Molinaro (iona)
Novick (rth)
Ruthberg (suffern)
Rounding out the Top 15:
Alfonzetti(brewster)
Dimaggio (yorktown)
Hagan (etb)
Sigona (wp)
Urban (rth)
here is the other link I tried to post. just a little info for the Reagan vs. Natoli argument. As you can see Reagan was an alternate while Natoli started from what heard. It says in the article that he played the second half so maybe I am wrong about him starting. Also check out the kid who is 14 years old and just got a full ride to U. of Vermont.

Eck and Rogers good clutch players. Forecheck well should be considered.
Always have to mention Mounties. Your precious is on the list
RYE TOAST..LOL.. I LIKE THAT!! that might be as good as ETB “easy to beat”
Top Forwards…..I like that list but of course I could argue and say I don’t like the order since I am the Mom of one of those players and the cheerleader for a lot of the other players but I think you did hit the nail on the head as far as the best with one exception and that would be Marasco. I know you will argue the league he plays in but the individual player himself is a good hockey player and only a junior. Good job brewster boys…there’s 8 of you guys there plus one more to make it 9! Loved following you guys this year and good luck in the future. I will miss HS hockey a lot next year because of you all!
BTW – #21, it’s up to you next year. I’ll be watching ya!
Natoli did start and reagan was an alternate and according to another jr sight the referee was mike greaney
tonight is rth senior night everyone come to playland at 620
GO
TITANS
Replying to an earlier post that wants Stepinac to “bring the championship home.” How could it be home if an A division championship has never even seen the halls of Stepinac? Iona sweeps this series and that is that
I’ve seen both goalies in big games. Trust me, you want Natoli in the big games.
Iona Prep vs Stepinac CHSHL Championship
Game #1 Sat night at 7:25 Ice Hutch.
Game #2 Monday 2/18 at 3:45 – Ice Hutch
Game #3 if needed Thursday 2/21 at 7 pm Murrays
ha ha
I’d l ike to gaurantee that Step wins and Iona does not score more than goals TOTAL.
Lopez is out. Big hurt on the #1 line.
All of Step is healthy, they got #3, Steve Yankowski back who only played the 3rd game of the Farrell game. Step will check C. King and shut down the offense, like they have already by posting a shutout the last time they played. Step beat a VERY Strong Team in Farrell, ala the Giants via Patriots on the last game of the regular season. Iona beat a very Weak Fordham team who out played them in game 1! Steps Goalie is better than Iona. Step Defense has more depth and offensive skill than IONA, Step 1st two lines are right now BETTER or equivalent at least to IONA’s first 2. Coaching and discipline goes to Step. This squad of players for Step already won a Championship when they were JV so they have this confidence of winning and IONA has this stigma of losing last year.
OOPS the total goals for IONA will be no more than 5
Total goals for IONA will be 5 or less
reagan wil miss game one do to his jr team playing in walpole mass nick odardi plays for the Ny saints he will be at the showcse in walpole too and cambria and molinaro have a game for the travel teams.. game 1 will be a bust look to see a good game 2 and 3
Who cares about Stepinac varsity. I want to hear about their JV squad.
That Just sucks. Its the freaking CHSHL Finals!!!!! It should be top prioirity.. i mean.. look at all the press they will get here.
Oh, I guess that travel team is promising them the NHL tryout? good luck, hope they make it to the NHL.
Thats a disgrace
I love the word Showcase…. what a joke. These kids and parents are being sold a bag of goods.
yes this weekend in walpole mass there will be a showcase for MJHL and AJHL. There will be about 75-100 college and pro scouts there to see the players. they play 2 25 min half. this is actually a real deal the scouts do show up no joke
thats absolutly ridiculous. None of those players are playing division one. They may play on good D-III schools, even win NCAA championships there, but there is absolutly no reason for them to miss a high school championship series for a “showcase”. Exactly who are they being showcased for? Are they going to get scholarships because of it? Or did their parents pay upwards of 5,000/year for there JR teams for fun? Juniors in hockey is completely overrated and for the majority of the kids it doesnt really matter. AAU basketball is for the ELITE players and games are held during the summer, not during the high school season, so the best can shine. If you want to play high level competition outside the high school season play on an elite midget team. Juniors is overrated and I understand it, don’t write me off as some former scrub just angry at the world for never getting his shot. If you took a step back and looked at all the money the JR’s people milk from these saps who think their kids are NHL ALL-STARS you would just laugh. Get real, your not going to the NHL, you don’t need to skip a high school championship game for some dumb showcase that isnt going to benefit you much anyway.
THIS IS JUST MY OPINION, THE KIDS MADE THEIR OWN DECISIONS AND IF THATS WHAT THEY WANT TO DO, FINE. BEFORE I GET ACCUSED OF BASHING THE KIDS, IM JUST STATING MY OPINION AND IF THEY REALLY WANT TO DO THAT THEY CAN, I WOULDN’T.
You have to be kidding me. There is no way Mattie Burdick does not make the top 15 forwards. He has got to be ahead of Hagan for ETB or Alfonzetti for Brewster. This kid has 40 goals and about 15 assists. He scored 7 goals by himself last game and is carrying Pawling on his back. Burdick has to be given consideration as one of the top players in the section. And its ok to pick against Pawling. We are used to being the underdog.
OK, sorry i retract that previous statement, or at least part of it. Thats great, plenty of college scouts. What are the odds any of the above mention are playing in the NHL or legit D-I college without sacrificing another 2-3 years in JRs and even then, odds are against them. 2 25 minute half’s in front of some scouts is STILL not worth missing the game, you need to realize that unless you absolutely dominate high school games in League One of Comprable your not going to play legit college. Examples-Daniels were the definition of dominant-will play next year. Squires-not even there but close. And even then it isn’t certain that one will make it to the college ranks (gitler was dominant and is where…?) People need to put hockey in perspective.
Can’t Believe these kids are missing a Championship Series. I really have ALOT to say but believe me the things I want to say, I can’t put on this BLOG… Their PARENTS should be very PROUD! Junior Showcases what a JOKE! Hey Parents, Open up your eyes, this is when you have to step up and give your kids some direction.
It’s over. Two straight…Step wins. Iona doesn’t stand a chance with Lopez, Molinaro and Cambria out. Junior Showcases, what a Joke. These players play Junior B not A.
Way to turn your back on your teammates!
hey ‘For Get About It”...FORGET IS ONE WORD
A look at college hockey schedules on any of the college websites will show almost every major college team is playing this weekend. The college season is winding down and NCAA tournament spots are up for grabs. I am sure many of those college coaches both D1 and D3 will miss their important college game to get over and watch this showcase. I am also sure they would want to start recruiting 10th and 11th graders too.
ah, yea right
No. These college coaches, D1 and D3 and please keep in mind that D3 college sports DOES NOT GIVE ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS, these coaches would rather recruit from the New York area travel teams rather than Minnesota, New England, the midwest, high level prep teams, USHL teams, Canadien junior teams etc. These NY area travel players are better than all those other kids. If you do not believe me just ask their parents
Good point. What college coaches have the time to go to this “showcase” when they are in the middle/end of their college season?
When Iona College had a team, their head coach was recruiting in Alaska (where he was an assistant coach) and Canada. He did not recruit at all in his backyard. He may have had one New Yorker play for him the whole time he was coach.
I guess anything is possible though. People just have to be careful of these scam artists looking to take everyones money, and promising that their kids have a legit shot when they go to these things. There are so many of these BS showcases in baseball. 100 kids go down, get 1 at bat, and that is it. Except then the kid gets to tell people that he tried out for the Yankees… and I guess technically they are not lying. IF you don’t hit a 450 foot homer in that at bat, you are ignored.
harold (or whoever is mooderating the blog while hes gone),
will someone be covering the rye/suffern game on wednesday? should be a great game!
Great teammates! They have been practicing with the teams since October. Made the Finals and now they turn their backs on their teammates. Believe me, when those kids return from their Great Showcases, and their team loses, How will they ever be able to look their teammates in the eyes ever AGAIN!
..Very rarley do the head coaches scout the players the assistant coaches are out there watching the kids. then they report back to the head coach and he watches video and will take a look at the top guys they are recuiting and Walpole mass is in the college hockey capital of the north east BOSTON they can come watch a game in the afternoon and be at their game that night..
Of course, let’s get back top talking about how good Rye is! Maybe the Rye Parents can start to tell us how good their players are and why their kids should get the MVP award because they are more valuable then all the other kids.
I think this other topic that we are talking about is worth discussing further. The question here is do these kids and parents realize by missing a Championship series understand the message they are sending to their school and their fellow teammates.
Step vs Iona will be good games. Hopefully all show up to play. When they are parents like us they will look back on their high school memories as the best time in their life, not some showcase. And guess what none of them are making the NHL.
I agree these showcases ar a joke for 99.9% of the kids. Most of them wind up playing lax anyway. It’s silly to throw away HS memories. 20 years from now they’ll remember and keep in touch with their HS friends not the Jr kids.
Wonderful,
One of the players who’s going to miss the game has 24 points in 39 games. Playing Junior B….Yep he’s going far. What a joke….Hey Wake up and smell the coffee!
Hopefully they’ll all have great showcases because later in their lives, they’re going to remember how they really let down their teammates!. VERY DISAPPOINTING! I’m sure the Iona and Stepinac coaches are not happy campers!
anyword on the lopez suspension??? will it get lifted??
hmmmm,
I will be at Suffern-Rye and Suffern-Monroe-Woodbury, and hopefully Game 1 of the CHSHL finals on Saturday
Anytime i am down in he dumps I can just read this blog and start laughing my ass off. Junior B showcase. What are they showcasing for? If your a senior playing junior B hockey you are trying out for club hockey at best. We are talking percentages here. Yes I am sure there are a couple of seniors who played B hockey and made a D3 college team.
For the younger players go to the Chowder Cup in the summer.
The players missing their High School games are playing for a team that has been playing and practicing together since August. They have comnpeted together thru over 50 games and are playing this weekend in a showcase consisting of league games that will determine if they make the playoffs. All these players informed their HS coaches in the beginning of the season that their first commitment was to juniors. The high school coaches knew there would be conflicts.A player decides to play junior hockey because he loves the game of hockey. He likes to play with and against better players. He wants to play a fifty plus game schedule. He wants to practice 3 times a week all season. High school does not offer even close to the same level of competition. These players make a tough decision., because of their talent either team they play for will be hurting if they don’t show up.
To section fan:
My son loves the game of hockey too, played almost 40-50 games a season on a midget travel team, and had the best time of his life on his high school team that was #1 in the state playing against top level upstate teams. And, yes, now he’s playing college hockey, albeit not D1 or D3, but again is having the time of his life – knowing he will never be in the NHL – but yet still able to play the sport he loves! His high school team was first and foremost before anything else and also was first and foremost for the other all state, all section, all county players on his team – as all these players missed their travel team games/playoffs due to high school games! There was never any question!!! These are memories that will last 4-ever. If these players can’t commit fully to their high school team, then they shouldn’t be allowed to play—just play juniors and make your memories there—don’t let down the other committed players on your team!
Who are you to beg to differ….if the HS Coach and their teammates know the deal before the season begins….why is it anyone else’s business to question or judge those players? They would “beg to differ” with your OPINION! Also….I highly doubt that the travel team that your son was on was anything more than a glorified HS team anyway. If it were a true Juniors Program…..they wouldn’t be on the team if they missed games for HS. AND that is the REALITY!
hockytown…..ok everyone has their own opinion….my point is you cannot play D3 or even most club team with just playing HS…kids who want to better themseleves and have the time of their life playing the game they love at the next level will only get better from juniors….idk if your a player or parent but it seems you not enjoy hockey like majority of the ppl on this forum do…and if your a parent or player maybe your son or you just is not good enough to go anywhere which is normal bc this section 1 but dont come out sayin juniors is overrated bc you can make an NYS HS all star team and they would be crushed by and EJHL or AJHL team.
I am so tired of hearing with a generalization about how these numerous so called junior program competition is so much better than high school. Perhaps but I ask this. I only count the Suffern goalie, the Stepinac Goalie, the forward from White Plains, and maybe the player from Brewster who are junior players that are the top players in their respective high school leagues. If the competition was so much better than why are nt all the junior players dominating the high school leagues?
Get over your anger and read my post again—I never said my son was on a Junior team!!!—also the players he played with on his high school team were the best of the best (no need to mention names) and NO ONE WAS ON A JUNIOR TEAM—it’s fine if a player wants to play juniors, but it’s not fair to do that to your high school teammates—then just play juniors then—also, since you seem to know REALITY—if you are a player or parent, drop a line when you or your son makes a D1 team or the NHL—then all that money will be worth it.
Since when does a High School coach and teammates have to know the deal? Does the Suffern coach know the deal? Would he stand for the deal? NO! Maybe the coaches on league 3 and 4 teams would put up with the deal—not the coaches of the top teams. These kids need to make a choice—as they say, “you can’t have your cake and eat it too.”
true juniors,
true juniors,
Here’s a partial list of present and former junior players (sorry I’m sure I missed some) – and you tell me if they’re not dominating:
F – Encarnaco, King, Datino, Molinaro, Cambria, Novick, DiMaggio, Marasco, Salt,Eck, Perrelle,Latino, Altieri, Martignetti
D- Ojeda, Conklin, McCabe, Kegan, Douglas, Odardi
G- Natoli, Reagan, DiMario, Parra
Be happy to tell you who dominates
I will not mention players names but I will say this
in the fowards group the first is a yes, the second no longer plays juniors, third and fourth and fifth are good players but I would not say dominant. The sixth and seventh? are they in the top 15 in the league? yes, but not in the top 6. Forwards 9 and 10, yes, forwards 11, 12, 13, 14, no way.
defenders, number 1 yes, 2 yes, 3 yes, 4 no, 5 no, 6 no,
goalies the first two easily dominate the other 2? no
Gee, there are many many present/former players over the years who “dominated” the high school teams and DID NOT play juniors—could have played juniors but chose not to (due to cost and/or other reasons)—so let’s not go there!! And those on your list from Suffern would never miss a high school game due to a junior game!
Some kids get realistic as they get older and know they aren’t making it to the NHL or D1. Other continue to play juniors cause they love it or maybe even still hold out the hope. Different strokes for different folks.
I think you were frothing at the mouth when you wrote that….seems that you are the angry one! It’s was quite obvious that you did not mean Juniors because you would never have said the ridiculous things you did. You have no clue as to what a true Juniors program can do for you if you have the skill to make a Junior team. And yes SHOWCASES do get you looked at by college’s not HS. So if you want to continue your hockey career in a D1 college, you have to play Juniors.
And fair by whose standards….people om the blog? Don’t think so. If the player makes it known and the coach and team accepts it, then that is all that really matters because the REALITY is that those teams are better for having those players than not at all.
sorry about the mispell. These so called junior players who are missing championship high school games for a showcase.
Their goal is to play D I or D III or make it to a upper level college team? good idea and goal to pursue.
Except to be on one of those types of teams it takes dedication and commitment correct? It takes putting the team and your team mates over your self correct? It takes not being selfish correct? It means being a “team player” correct? It means sacrifices correct?
Well it seems to me the players flushing their high school team and team mates for a showcase are only dedicated and comitted to themselves, are putting themselves before their team and team mates, are certainly being selfish, and are not “team players” and will not make sacrifices for the good of the group or the team.
There is a segment in our sports society this generation that looks to distance themselves or consider themselves better or elite. How kids and parents can think that they are doing their hs teams a valuable service by being a part time players? or do they get a rush walking into the locker room and seeing the relieved look on their teammates faces? Are they embarrassed when telling their coaches and teammates that they are missing a big game? Do they feel bad when they miss a big game, the high school team loses, they come back the next game and play? What about the kids who show up to everything and sit? Is it uncomfortable when superstar misses games, practices, and then shows up and plays 40 minutes? Or do they and their parents get a rush? Do these “above team rules players” think its ok that they have separate rules than everyone else? What happened to being part of the team.
All the junior players that were named dure for the most part dominate play in high schooll although one guy cannot not do it all for some teams that dont have the skill, and to be honest it should not matter if a junior player leaves his HS for a juniors game bc HS is getting you nowhere….where as juniors u at least have a shot at a higher level….and uu can say it about memories but its totally up to the kid not anyone else…and he is no letting his HS teamates down bc if the HS team knew the player played juniors then why takke them in the first place?...oh wait i nkow why maybe it was bc they know the game and can teach soem of the younger players how to play! ever think of that!?
Thank you “misconduct” and for all of you who know nothing about Junior programs, those schedules are made prior to the HS season’s start and the coaches have the option what to do or schedule prior to the HS season. END OF STORY!
The big problem of Juniors vs High School, is that many of the players today DON”T BELONG IN A JUNIOR PROGRAM! They’re just paying their frieght. And the same kids that are playing juniors are often Transparent in High School. Think they’re only playing Juniors because Mommie and Daddie still have an NHL dream.
Out of the list that was mentioned earlier in the Blog. In my opinion, Only a few would have a chance of playing for an Applecore Junior A team next year if they were still around.
F –Encarnaco, King, DiMaggio, Salt
D- Conklin, McCabe
G- Natoli, Reagan
BTW – kudos for those players out there who play both
Juniors and their HS teams. Those kids are skating 6-7 days a week. It’s not being selfish…it’s being a true player that loves the game and will do anything to play as much as they can because they love the game!
Oh, so as long as you tell the team you will miss a championship game months in advance that takes you off the hook? I agree with Mr Smelly on this the kids and parents are selfish as heck. And to “I agree” yeah, I know those kids are SO MUCH better that they need to teach the others, why not? Maybe they can be player coaches?
Juniors except at the highest level has become a money maker and there are too many teams out there and its extemely diluted. Parents here what they want to hear and continue to pay the freight. Their kids are learning nothing here at all and those kids will end up short, on club teams, which is very competitive and great hockey. No D I here at all, and DIII maybe, but financial aid like everyone else is all they ll get. no athletic awards for D III
give me a break,
Encarnacao is already playing Applecore Junior A this year.. the reason why he’s missed so many games as well. He will also be on the team next year.
Ok…let’s look at that example specifically. WP finally won the leaguer for the first time in 12 years and Encarnaco was a big part of that along with his partner Sigona. They were like the dynamic duo for WP. Encarnaca missed 7 games and still lead in points up to a few weeks ago. Do you really think that the coach and team would rather have not had him play due to his Junior’s commitment? Really don’t think so. He made everyone a little better player and assisted kids who would have never even seen a point otherwise. It goes for the Step team as well. It’s understandable that people have their own opinion but all programs are not like Suffern with a pool of talent so they will take the talented travel kid for what they can and go from there. It is not fair that you judge them and blog nasty things because of your opinion. It is a team and the team is who is affected and therefore no one else’s opinion really matters.
Wonder if Channel 12 will be circling around tonite, probably not, just a hockey game.
Byram Hills has canceled a game against the same opponent for the second time this season. This time ruining Senior Night for the team, the seniors and thier parents.
This time the reason given was that the temperature is going to fall to 20 degrees this evening (news flash, that happens at night during the winter). The first time was that they had equiptment stolen out of the locker room at West Point (go figure) the night before. These actions are irresponsible. The home team gets stuck for the cost of ice time etc… If any consumers on this blog are involved in scheduling, beware!!!
well i played in juniors and th HS parents have to stop being so bitter about players who play juniors if there not getting any better why do you care then? its not your kid worry about your kid and yourself….yeah no athletic awards for D3 but there are grants buddy!!! did u forget??? do u think everyone can afford college that play hockey and want a college education…with the exception of very few on this forum you are all invloved with hugh school and should just keep it there and dont rip into juniors…bc obviously MAJORITY OF YOU THINK YOU KNOW IT ALL ABOUT HOCKEY…when the truth is you really have no idea….your welcome HS parents
BTW nobody forces their kids to play juiniors bud…you rly are nuts…they play it to get exposure..yes most junior B teams are not great…thats not gonna stop kids who love hockey from playing…YOU NEVER KNOW WHO IS WATCHING…and as for missing high school games…seriously it means your kid might get more ice time…when your this young and its rly competitive for college hockey and junior A its everyman for himself…high school is just for fun..yes state championships are great but mean nothing in furthering your hovkey career.
Junior players are committed and loyal to their junior team. Many only play high school because the coach and hs teammates ask them to play so the hs team will be better. Kids get faced with tough decisions. If they miss junior game coach and players on that team get pissed.Instead of making a kid feel worse for having to make a decision everyone should accept that it is a tough decision for a 16 17 year kid to make and accept his decision. There are enough pressures on kids now days they don’t need to feel your fury for making a decision you don’t agree with
Then the junior players shouldn’t play high school—just play juniors. And it’s not just junior players who love the game of hockey and are loyal and committed. And how about asking those 16-17 year old kids on the high school team that the junior player is on how they feel when he is not there in big games or when he does show up taking their ice time.
What team in any sport at any level condones missing a game, especially a championship game?
Believe me, we don’t need that High School player!
Misconduct, your statement “you never know who will be watching” is very funny. Is that the come on the junior C coaches give the parents while they are writing the check? What a dumb thing to say. In the above posts its clear that head college coaches are coaching at this time of the year so they are not at these showcases, and assistant coaches? maybe at USHL or high level juniors or maybe Canada? so its a third tier of talent scouts that colleges have that surf these lower level junior games? sure sure ok right.
Misconduct yes, college grants, but it has NOTHING to do with athletics. It based on financial need, giving grants or school money based on atheltics in division III is against NCAA rules. Nice try though as being able to suggest that would keep the dream alive.
of course college coaches recruit at this time of the year and never did i mention junior c i spoke about some players playing junior b now who should proably try out for a junior A team to…most colleges are private and will give grants for athletics and call it academic money yes its againt NCAA policy but do you hoenstly think the top players at a place like Middlebury can afford that?....nice try bud but again everyone on his blog knows everything i forgot..i know i dont know everything but im pretty sure i know alot more than you about this! it would be nice to see everyone follow every rule but thats why we have refs in hockey…and judges in the reeal world.
And you really never know who is watching…o wait i forgot yeah you do you know everything riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight
Misconduct, nobody gets athletic money at D3 schools hidden or otherwise. keep saying that and two things will happen, Your nose will grow and people who are like you who need to get out of their dream world and face reality still have hope. I guess you have to justify all the money you spent traveling half way around the world to get the scholarship that does not exist. If thats what keeps you going then so be it. The Easter bunny is on his way, leave him cookies on your table and be sure he leaves you brightly colored eggs.
is that there are lots of players (yeah, both junior b and c and midget)reading these ridiculous posts that are laughing their butts off at you parents. Why? Because they have, in fact, been looked at and have been contacted by all kinds of programs from Juniors to college. But you can all argue it’s not happening because the fact of the matter is – it’s not happening to your kid. NO CLUE!
You are correct Funny thing.. and to those who say Junior A,B, showcases are a joke, read this. This kid played against Natoli at the Met all-star game. So if this can happen i really don’t think playing D3 is that far out of reach for some of these kids. Here is the link to the website. http://www.metleague.org/mjhl.php
SACO, ME- ’93 forward Connor Anthoine has made a verbal commitment to accept a full scholarship offer from the University of Vermont (Hockey East) for the fall of 2011. Anthoine (5’9â€?, 165lb), who is currently a freshman at St. Dom’s High School and a native of Lewiston, ME, is currently a member of the Portland Junior “Bâ€? Pirates of the Metropolitan Junior Hockey League.
Through 26 games this season, the smooth skating 14 year old has a 9-12-21 line through 26 games.
“We are excited for Connor and his commitment. He has a special skill set that we know will only get better. UVM is very fortunate to nab someone with his skill and passion for the game,” said Head Coach and President of the Portland Junior Pirates Sean O’Brien.
Anthoine recently played for the MetJHL North Conference All-Star squad, netting a goal and an assist in the game.
Last summer, he was selected to the U14 Team New England team and competed in the USA U14 National Camp in Rochester, NY. Last season, he skated for the Portland Junior Pirates Bantam Major team, posting a 42-34-76 line through 47 games. This April, Anthoine is slated to compete for the North American East Coast Selects team which will compete in tournaments in Russia, Finland, and Sweden.
Anthoine is the 36th college commitment for the Portland Junior Pirates organization since their first season (2003-2004), just four years ago
Stepinac has got this series in two games. Stepinac fans get your brooms out. Look for a big series from Dan Donofrio who has been playing very well and Anthony Muccio, AJ Datino and Danny Couglin theese are the stars for Stepinac. Iona has lost one of there main scores Lopez, but they still have King thats all everyone else is overrated
Finally someone else who actually knows what they are talking about with juniors…and not just blowing smoke!
ok thats one player- out of how many?
I guess you didn’t finish reading.. the last sentence in the article is…
“Anthoine is the 36th college commitment for the Portland Junior Pirates organization since their first season (2003-2004), just four years ago”
that looks like more then one guy to me.. actually looks like 36 guys, from just one team. A very small percentage of kids will evey play hockey in college, (not including club team) but there is nothing wrong with having a goal and taking a shot. One thing you don’t want when you get older is to say “what if”. If you give it a shot and don’t make it at least you know the answer, there is nothing worse then not knowing.
Okay since the postman set everyone straight about the junior ordeal can you all be quiet now?? most of you argunig have never even witnessed a juniors game or NCAA game so please just got sit on your hands now
o btw the money i spent was well worth it i am playing NCAA hockey now..but thanks for telling me how it works bc i have no idea although im already there
Nikita one of the best players on #5 Norwich cam from the EJHL thier starting goalie played for the Phili flyers in the MetJHL…and the list goes on my friend! so call me whatever you want but your wrong
