Division I quarterfinal preview

February
20

Here’s some thoughts on tomorrow’s Division I quarterfinals. Surely my picking prowess isn’t enough to take down Suffern and Mamaroneck, is it? As always, please add your thoughts—since there’s no games tonight, what else are you doing?

Division I quarterfinals, Thursday
No. 9 North Rockland (14-7-1) at No. 1 Suffern (22-0-2)
Where: Sport-O-Rama, 7:30
Breakdown: North Rockland has won 8 of 10, a run that began after losing 10-3 to Suffern on Jan. 4. That represents the most goals the Mounties have scored this season. The Red Raiders have also improved a lot since that first meeting, and yes all the pressure is on the Mounties, but that’s been true this whole season, and it hasn’t hurt them yet. And I’ve asked this before, but when was the last time Suffern lost a playoff game at Sport-O?
Prediction: Suffern hasn’t won a game by more than 7, so I’m not going crazy with the margin of victory. Suffern 8, North Rockland 2.

No. 10 Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville (13-6) at No. 2 Mamaroneck (20-3-1)
Where: Hommocks, 8
Breakdown: The Eagles showed a lot of grit overcoming a 4-0 deficit against Scarsdale in the first round, and they won’t be scared going into the Jungle after last year’s playoff game, which was tied 2-2 after two periods. On the other hand, that game means Mamaroneck knows not to take this team lightly. Besides stopping Alex Hagen, I think the biggest concern for the Tigers has been their layoff—they have only played twice in four weeks, and the last game was Feb. 8 at Suffern.
Prediction: Both teams have a lot of firepower, but I like Mamaroneck’s defense and depth a little bit more. Mamaroneck 7, E/T/B 4.

No. 6 White Plains (22-3) at No. 3 Rye Town/Harrison (13-8)
Where: Playland, 8
Breakdown: Here’s the story about this game from today’s paper. White Plains hasn’t won the section since 1979, and of course RT/H is only four years old, so both teams have to be looking at this season as their best chance to go deep in the playoffs in a long time. Who will shine under pressure? White Plains won 6-1 in its Thanksgiving tournament, but it was the third day in a row for each team and that was a long time ago. But the Tigers also beat the Titans twice last year, and in the ‘06 playoffs, so do they have the Titans number? RT/H is obviously more seasoned playing in League 1, but that advantage might be wiped out by the injury to starting forward Adam Urban.
Prediction: Though I would give a slight edge to different teams in each category, both have senior star-power up front (Sigona-Encarnacao and Novick-McKinney) teamed with a talented underclassman, a dependable second line, four very solid defensemen and steady goaltending. So where does that leave me? With this: White Plains 5, Rye Town/Harrison 3.

No. 12 Sleepy Hollow/Irvington (9-12) at No. 4 Mahopac (5-16-2)
Where: Brewster, 8
Breakdown: How much does center Tyler Perrelle mean to Mahopac? The Indians are 0-8 without him, and he still leads the team in points despite missing those games. He will be there Thursday night. The Legends have a chance to do something I’m pretty sure no No. 12 seed or League 4 team has ever done—make the semifinals. In games against common opponent Somers/North Salem, Mahopac won 6-4 and 10-6 while SH/I lost 7-4 and 5-1.
Prediction: Mahopac is such a young team (15 underclassmen) and I’m not sure how they will react, while SH/I has to be confident after its last two games (winning in OT to make the playoffs and then beating Clarkstown North, both on the road). I struggled with this one more than any game so far. Mahopac 4, Sleepy Hollow/Irvington 3, OT.

  1. hockey fan

last year e/t/b hung around for 2 period but there goaltender stopped 44 of 49 shots this year they will not be so lucky
    mamm 8 e/t/b 2

  2. fruit fly

Harold i like your picks haha

  3. East of the river

North Rockland keeps it closer than you think, but Suffern pulls away in the 3rd. 4-1 Suffern
Mamoroneck lights up ETB after shaking off a rusty 1st period. 8-5 Mamoroneck (10-2 if the Gulls have practice)
White Plains and RTH in the game of the night. 6-5 White Plains in OT. Rui with the game winner.
Sleepy makes history over another league 1 pretender. 5-3 Sleepy Hollow/Irvington

As for tonight? American Idol what else. Way better than a Nets game :)

  4. Old School Mountie

Harold, if you remember the January 4th Suffern/NR game, Suffern sat their first line most of the second and all of the third period. They also played their backup and third-string goalies the entire third period resulting in two of the three goals scored by NR. Look for Suffern to come out flying and make a statement in this first playoff game. It is not their style to embarrass their opponent but this game will be over VERY early. Prediction: Suffern 7 / NR 0

  5. Suffern at Sporto

I’m pretty sure the last time Suffern lost a play-off game at Sporto was in 2003 against Clarkstown North (Herman, Hutchko, Quatuccio…).

  6. fiya

rth will come out on top, mark my words.

  7. plans for tonight

so glad you would ask harold ! Im just gunna grab some early dinner, read the blogs, and just relax thinking about the playoff hockey atmosphere…I think im gunna stay home and watch Shaq re-unite against his old partner in crime Kobe Bryant as the Phoenix Suns play host to the LA Lakers (9ET) on ESPN

  8. D1 Quarters Predictions

    Suffern 6, North Rockland 1
    Mamaroneck 8, ETB 3
White Plains 5, Rye Town 4
    Sleepy 4, Mahopac 3

  9. sec1 fan

    Suffern 6 NR 1
    WP 5 RTH 3
    Mamo 8 ETB 4
    Mahopac 2 SH 0

    Pelham 5 S/NS 2
    Rye 4 O 1
    Jay 6 Pawling 4
    Brewster 4 Yktown 3

  10. Suffern-North Rockland

Suffern had more players score their first career goal that game in one period, than north rockland scored in that same period against suffern’s backup who has played about 15min all season

  11. icehole

Get ready for the PLAYOFFS !!
game of the night thurs will be Iona/Stepinac game 3

  12. Section 1 Follower

I don’t care about any player scoring thier first career goal, first line being benched, backup goalie, other reasons you want to insert, etc. It is one playoff game that matters. It is amazing the amount of reasons that come out of the bloggers on here. Just make a prediction and let em’ play!

  13. Section One Flowerer

Pretty smart blog there. I guess it was too subtle for you. They were all saying it will not be close. Those weren’t excuses, just facts. The game was the only game all year that wasn’t even close. CNorth played Suffern better and they won one game in the league though they lost to NRockland. Suffern played their freshman all of the 3rd period and most of the second half to keep the game as close as 10-3. Heck, we were surprised as much as anyone that it was not close. It should be closer but the Mounties are now on a mission and are playing it one game at a time. They had a hard time getting up during the reg season for certain teams, but not anymore. They played very well against two top teams, Rye and MW to finish and are ready to roll.

  14. ?

5 out of the 8 games played on monday and tuesday were won by the lower seeded team. thursday and friday will have more close games and the underdogs will win again. also either mam or suff will be defeated before the finals.

  15. games

suffern will not give up a goal to NR and RTH will take down white plains especially if “stonewall” jackson (there was no wall against newro) plays awful

  16. DPW

Great predictions Harold, I think they are going to be accurate this team haha, though i really don’t imagine GLaser giving up 4 to ETB, Mamk isn’t too rusty since suffern they obviously have been practicing like other teams, and scrimmaged with Pelham as a tune up.

  17. Gobstopper

Good to see people are finally predicting Mamk over ETB, Mamk is clearly a better team, ETB only has a couple good kids then a huge drop off in talent. The only way ETB makes it a game and wins is if Conner got in a car crash with Fine in the car with him, and Glaser and Hagan were in a freak baseball accident tomorrow, and then the rest of the team all took a trip to see those players in the hospital, and then they all came down with the flu

  18. thats obnoxious

    real classy

  19. predictor

Harold, in the Sleepy vs. Mahopac preview you forgot the most obvious common opponent, Pac 3 vs. North 0, North 2 vs. Pac 0, S/I 3 vs. North 1

  20. Lyon 13

Mahopac may be young but many of these kids have seen MHS step up in the playoffs year after year. Put the Pac in for their 5th consecutive semi. They also have one of the best coaches behind the bench in Section 1.

  21. predictor

Pac does have one of the best coaches behind the bench, but on Thursday he will be running into one of the few coaching staffs on that S/I bench that can match wits with him. Should be a great game.

  22. Prop

I hear a bunch of ETB players will not be at the game. Their parents spent 3000 dollars per ticket for them to see Hannah Montana… (here is the ironic part) in Montana on Saturday night. Oh well, the high school team takes a back seat again.
The only way it is game is if ETB scores the first two goals and puts Mamk in panic mode. The only way they get 2 goals is if they think they don’t need to keep tabs on their Hagan. Our Hagan is a much better player though. Much much taller too.

  23. The Truth

about the E/T/B Mam matchup is that Mam the better team on paper. E/T/B will need their A game to make it close. However, if E/T/B does bring everything they have to the table, anything can happen in this one. They have too much firepower to be shut down that simply….of course Mam has just as much. This game will be better than most are predicting.

  24. stone wall(lol)

stonewall jackson couldnt stop a beach ball

also, stonewall jackson’s side lost the war haha

  25. blackaces

it is sad some of you are so ignorant that you have to to bash the very kids you love to go watch play hockey and help the sport get the noteriety it gets at the highschool level…. if you didn’t have the kids that play travel playing in the highschool leagues you would have nothing more than a glorified house league you can find in yonkers or at the westchester skating academy…. whatever happened to joe rausch? now thats something to talk about! how can the fordham coach threaten him with school expulsion due to missing some of his practices/games. if this is the case should he be fired? i would of quit too! good for rausch! i see fordham lost a few games at the end…wonder why???? east of the river…it must of had to do with the gulls…that seems to be the common denominator for teams losing or winning…probably right to a point but its about the kids and the coaches having an understanding before the season and if they can make it work great…seems the coach at fordham was left out of the loop….

  26. to black aces

How can you back or support or defend any player in any sport who puts himself before the team? That its ok to have separate rules for separate players. That its ok for the so called elite players to come and go as they please? When these superstar NHL prospects go to college and play on a D1 program will they be able to do thesame thing? Come and go as they please? Or if its a class thing? If they are the elite and best on that team it will be ok? Explain to me how you think a team should be run? If you are the best player come whenever you want? Black aces nobody you know personally is going to the NHL so this is what you want kids to be taught? If you are better than the other players you are special and team rules do not apply?

  27. great game

WP vs RT/H should be one of the best games of the playoffs. I agree that the final score will be close but if both goalies aren’t on their games then the score will be much higher then expected. Winner of this game will get a Mamk team that is looking past them and to Suffern.

  28. blackaces

no player is any more important than the next…its up to both the coaches and the players to have some boudaries in place before the season starts..maybe some team rules…if you miss a practice /game due to travel then icetime will be taken away..i didn’t say they deserve special treatment but my point in regard to rausch is you can’t tell a player he will be suspended from school..thats taking it a little too far..it sure puts both parties in a tough situation…the kids just want to play and the coaches of these teams want to be competitive…you’re right as far as the nhl goes…no one down here in this area will get there anytime soon but you never know…the real hockey players are up north and coming out of europe..for now lets watch these boys play the best game in the world…

  29. Mamo

Mamk is not looking past anyone. I would like to see a semi with the two tiger teams.

  30. WHAT?

    Blackaces,

How could a coach (who’s not even employed by the school) get a kid suspended? No way.

  31. predictor

What? what are you talking about, if the coach isn’t employed by the school, then who is he employed by?

  32. hmmm

hey predictor u make u choices yet?

  33. Oh-No

The RTH goalie will be on his game, and the stonewall with holes will look like he has all season; beatable. Despite that, WP will overpower a RT/H team with only 1 solid line and only 2 reliable D-men. WP will win 6-4, unless the RT/H goalie and star forward Novick (#22) play out of their minds.

  34. Get Real

    Rt/H 6 WP 4
    ETB 4 Mamaroneck 3
    SLH 2 Mahopac 1

  35. Just Another Fan

OK Harold , I have a chance to make up the one lead you have on me.

    Suffern 7 No. Rockland 1
    Mamaroneck 7 ETB 3
    Mahopac 5 SH/I 2
and here is where we disagree
    RT/H 6 WP 4 (goaltending edge to RT/H)

  36. Prop

Why does everyone kiss the butt of the upstate NY players. Our best teams here have kicked the butts of them all, and we are the ones with the #1 team in the state. We have Jon Forster, and we also have that kid from New Rochelle (did not play for New Ro) but nonetheless, he is on the olympic team or something. Why people down here have such an inferior mentality to the upstate teams is weird. The players here and some of the teams are as good as any other school in the state.

  37. Snowman

    Hey Harold,

With the weather reports calling for 3-7 inches of snow on Friday – what is Plan B for rescheduling Friday’s playoff games?

  38. Decision Goes To:

    RTH v WP

    Goalie: RTH
    Defense: RTH
    Forwards: WP

Defense wins games. Decision goes to: RTH

  39. fanotgame

I have seen both RTH and WP several times this season. Currently, WP has a slight edge in skaters (more depth due to RTH’s loss of Urban). The Tigers have also had the Titan’s number the last few matches. RTH has an edge in grit due to its more difficult schedule. They are also playing with a lot of confidence. I think it comes down to goaltending. Both tenders are capable of stealing a game. But, both are susceptible to lapses in play. The team with the sharper goaltender tonite at Playland will win.

  40. fanotgame

Regarding the outdoor classic at Murray’s tonite: The hard ice conditions should favor Iona who has the better skaters. But, Reagan is 3-1 vs. the Gaels this season with his only loss coming after playing a bunch of Jr games and then rushing down (presumably tired) from a jr showcase in MA. A refreshed Reagan may be difficult for Iona to solve. Look for this one to be tight all the way through. Maybe another OT thriller. Iona wins it in a squeaker 3-2, but only if Dimario plays strong and the rest of the Gaels stay out of the sin bin.

  41. Mr Smelly

    Prediction:

The underdog? the fans with wind, windchills in the single digits

The favorite? the referees will be showcasin! You will see them inject themselves into the final outcome of this game.

The winner? Iona 5 Stepinac 3

  42. hmmm

    here it is harold,

    Suffern 8 No. Rockland 0
    Mamaroneck 5 ETB 4
    Mahopac 3 SH/I 2 OT
    RT/H 3 WP 6

  43. predictor

I am glad to see prop bring up jon foster. He has got a national championship, and played in the minors, and he never missed a suffern practice or game to play travel

  44. OldSchool2

That is because his father did not over commit him to playing on multiple teams. He grew and matured and left home to play out in the midwest in the minor leagues while still a junior in high school. He was dedicated and his family had faith in his commitment and maturity. They did not have to keep him under their thumb because his was not mature enough to handle the independance. He lived with a host family and finished high school while playing juniors. How many of these kids could handle that? Not many. Mommy and Dad need to be there to hold there hand and keep their schedule in their day planner in their pocket.

  45. Actually

University of Denver won 2 national titles when Foster was there. In his freshman and senior years. He actually went to the midwest for his senior HS year. Played at Suffern when he was a junior, and never missed a game or practice.

  46. Travel Team

Yes, but Foster left school in his senior year. Although no one today in Section 1 may have Fosters ability (they might though since some are still sophs) they have the “dream” to play at a higher level. It may be D3 or just real good college club hockey.

The hockey development system is not built around high school sports, as is basketball, football or baseball or even track.

It’s more like gymnastics or swimming where there are high school teams, but you advance in those sports by being on good club teams. Those are much lower profile sports but I am sure it is common for a swimming standout to miss a high school event for a regional club swimming event. It’s the club thing that will get you further along.

Hockey kids should make a commitment to their high school teams, afterall it is a team and commitment is intrinsic to teams. However, considering how the hockey development and recognition system works, its impractical for the high school coaches to act imperial in their demands on kids who are good enough to get a shot at the next level.

Considering the state of most section 1 teams, the coaches should be more flexible.

  47. ACHA

Bottom line is that travel coaches outside of Junior “A” should know their place and understand that HS comes first. At the same time the travel players should take their HS schedule to the travel coach in advance to give the travel caoch time to reschedule as it is usually easier to reschedule a travel game since you can play at 7 am and you don’t have a thousands guidelines to go through in scheduling a game. Ironic that we are talking about Foster here, because his junior coach, now coaches the junior Saints, who while not great have improved in only there second year. The saints coach does not give his players a hard time when they miss a junior game for a HS game, and this is a guy that coached players that we now watch on TV. Foster did leave after his junior year, and if he stayed and missed some suffern games to play in a tournament where he may have been scouted, I think everyone could have understood that. Just like this year, I don’t think anyone should give #9 on WP a hard time, he is a senior and may be getting some serious looks. Where most of the problems come from is from freshman. HS hockey doesn’t mean as much to them yet, and for them and their parents to think a college coach is going to scout a bantam game and even cares about someone who is 16 or below is ridiculos. The college coaches have to worry about their own jobs from year to year, they could care less about some hot shot 15 year old.

  48. tigers

jackson is playing in the playoffs

  49. tigers

jackson will be playing in the playoffs

  50. Jackson 5(game suspension)

    how?

    whats the ruling?

  51. Travel Team

    ACHA….

Your point on freshman is very good. However, the demands on some of the skilled freshman and sophmores is very heavy today. More than it should be! High school hockey is the only team sport where you see ALOT (not just a few) standout freshman and sophmores. Often they are still involved in a full Bantam schedule for teams they have played years for.

And then immediately some (not all) varsity coaches thrust them into a position of critical importance to his teams well being. Remember this coach did little to develop the kid. And all the kid wants to do is play with schoolmates. The demands and pressure is great for someone so young. You just don’t see this on most other varsity sports.

I think the coaches should even be more flexible with hockey freshmen and sophmores in accomodating travel events.

  52. Prop

I say NY goes back to what CT and NJ still have. A rule stating that you can NOT play on an outside team while playing on your school team. This would eliminate all problems. Kids who would rather play travel can do so, and the high schoolers can do so. This way it would be easier to navigate this cr@p.
You think that Travel will benefit your chances of going pro? Fine play travel…and just travel.

  53. Tonight

Is everybody ready for a GREAT night of hockey?

And these games are all just about at the SAME TIME tonight. Updates are going to come FLOODING in here nonstop.

    My thoughts on the games:

    RTH vs. WP

The RTH-WP game could be the best game of the playoffs. If Urban wasn’t injured, I’d give RTH the edge. But with Urban’s loss, I give the edge to WP. 5-3 WP.

    Suffern vs. North Rockland

NR has become a very respectable team in the Section, no question. And they’ve had a great year. They will for sure go all out in tonight’s game and leave their hearts on the ice. O’Conner, Meany, Santiago and Rau are all League 1 caliber players that carry this team. I don’t think it will be 10-3 like the regular season game, but, sorry NR, your dream season ends here. I have the utmost respect for your team and what you’ve accomplished this year, but Suffern is Suffern. I say 6-2 Suffern.

    Mamo-ETB:

I haven’t seen ETB too much to judge their play, but I hear they have a tremendous offense, but shaky goaltending. But I can’t see them beating Mamo. 6-3 Mamo.

    Sleepy-Mahopac

One thing we’ve learned this year is that League 2 through League 4 (with the exception of White Plains) is a crap shoot. I think we can all agree on that. In those Leagues, any team can beat any team on any given day. examples from this season: CS over Scarsdale, Sleepy over MP, ETB over Brewster, NR over MP, ETB over Scarsdale, etc. With that said, Mahopac is basically a League 2 team playing in Legague 1 this year, so, I actually think Sleepy will pull this one out. 5-4 Sleepy in OT

    Thoughts?

  54. Travel Team

I like that Ct. rule and it would force NY based travel teams to consider a “short-season” like that is in effect for NJ teams at the AA and below level.

  55. ACHA

I get you travel team…..... and I think the good HS coaches know how to handle these situations. They may still have to bench the player a game, but that may be worth it. The coach can say to the freshman and his parents, look your going to play in the silver sticks, great good luck, but I have to sit you a game when you caome back or else the other players will see there is no punishment for a freshman! and start to miss games for less important reasons. I think you can let a HS player miss a HS practice to let the kid play in a travel game. I think everyone gets the “one time shot a year” special situation. But, once you see the travel players lack of participation becoming a detriment to the HS team (more off the ice than on), thats when you have to stop and and say alright one or the other.

  56. fanotgame

Just saw the latest NYSSA rankings. In D I, Suffern is still 1 while Mamo moved up to 10. In D II, Rye moved up to 6 and Pelham to 7. This is the last ranking before ranked teams play each other in Section playoffs. Section 1, Section 3 (Utica area) and Section 5 (Syracuse/Rochester area) are tied with most teams from one Section in the rankings. Those 3 sections each have 4 teams in. I wonder if this top position (in terms of number of teams in the rankings) is a first for Section 1? Go downstate hockey.

  57. predictor

Sorry Hmmm.. I can only give your one game today, the others are too close to the vest, and my biased would cloud my judgement.

I will give you the toughest one though.

RTH’s offensive zone trap works like a machine, I actually don’t think this one will be close, RTH 6- WP 2

  58. Travel Team

I just hate when someone alludes to going pro, or “no one is making it the NHL”...Heck, whats wrong with just wanting to play at the highest level that your talent and drive will take you!

I think most high school upperclassmen hockey players are grounded enough and have realistic goals in mind when they are playing other than high school hockey.

  59. predictor

ha ha wishful thinking travel team, but most high school upperclassmen are not grounded and don’t have realistic goals.

Just go ahead and ask any of the good high school hockey juniors where they think they playing college. I would bet you that 9 out 10 times, you will get answers like Maine, Lowell, BU, and even the ones who are remotely realistic will give you these D. 3 powerhouses like Middlebury, Plattsburg, Babson.

Believe me, I coach a travel team, I know.

  60. Harold Gutmann

    Snowman,
Here are Saturday’s makeup dates for Friday’s quarterfinals, if necessary. The final decision will be made tomorrow morning regarding ALL games.

    1 Pelham-S/NS Ice Hutch 4
    2. Rye-Oss Ice Hutch 8
    3. John Jay-Pawling Brewster 7:15
    4. Yorktown-Brewster Brewster 9:15

  61. postman

I never really understood that phrase either (not going to the NHL) “travel team”. I guess some think that it’s a waste of time to work hard to be the best you can be, if you aren’t going pro. Makes no sense to me. I really think these are people who regret the money and time they spent on hockey. The games, the friends you made, your kid hanging in the locker room, driving in the car on those long trips, the laughs, the crying, is what its about, not some end result with a 7 figure contract.

  62. observer

    explain

    a 9th seed plays a 1st seed

    12 seed plays 4th seed

    6th seed plays 3rd seed

    10th seed plays 2nd seed

    should be
    12vs 1
    10 vs 2
    9 vs 3
    6 vs 4

  63. predictor

I see your point observer, I will tell you why it looks like this.

If the favorites would have one the first round, the seeding would look like this

    1 vs. 9
    2 vs. 7
    3 vs. 6
    4 vs. 5

Since Sleepy and ETB won they are not being punished by automatically playing the highest seed left, I guess those are the rules.

  64. Bracketology

    its a bracket

    it doesnt get re-seeded

so, in the bracket, HAD all the higher seeds won game 1, it would be 1-8, 2-7, 3-6, 4-5

but, 8 lost to 9, so its 1-9
    7 lost to 10..so its 2-10
    6 won so its 3-6
and 5 lost to 12 so its 4-12

  65. N-4-cer

    Mr Smelly ,
Already blaming refs before the game begins. It will be decided on the ice, by the players. The conditions will be hard but be forgotten after the first minute.
The players need to play their game. The calls will be so no team gains an advantage due to a foul or illegal act. Otherwise it should be an exciting ,classic showdown.

  66. Bracketology

    http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=257314&tclass=

    is a better explaination

  67. Mr Smelly

Refs? Oh you will see. They will be center stage in the spotlight and will definately get over involved in this game. They will “steal the show”

  68. Charlie Everywhere

This is the year Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville takes down Mamaroneck in the playoffs.

  69. Observer

Next year is the year ETB merges with Mt. Pleasant to try to beat Suffern.

  70. Prop

I can’t wait until Mamaroneck beats ETB tonight so the ETB people can finally go away. You would think that after the thumpings they took vs. teams like Pawling, they would clam up. Oh and please if the score is like 6-4 and ETB loses, I don’t want to hear the all too common “we proved that we could play with anyone including the #6 team in the state.” All ETB has proved to anyone so far is that they can not field a team unless you combine 3 high schools together and even then you are a league 3 team. I don’t want to hear that ETB is a “new” team. Bronxville has had a high school program for about 8 years, and Eastchester has had a program for about 20 or more. Tuckahoe is new to the scene. Both Eastchester and Bronxville were independent from each other for about 6 years, until they both (especially Bronxville) started to fall apart due to players opting to only play low level juniors instead of playing on both. Tell me where I am wrong.

  71. DPW

    Charlie Everywhere,

Mamk will beat ETB im not trying to be mean but lets face it they’re considering one of the best teams in the state for a reason, Let me take the time now to say this instead of going back on tonight to say “I told u so” so there you go.

  72. fanotgame

Interesting that if it snows tomorrow Rye (#2) has to play at Ossining (#7). So much for home ice advantage.

  73. To all ETB Detractors

    Lighten up!
We are just having a little fun rooting for a team which is young and improving. This is a logical (unlike some others) merger of 3 schoools in the same town (for those of you who have said they, are not you qbviously do not live in Eastchester, or you would know better).

  74. My Hockey Team

    Prop,

Where do the students in Larchmont go to high school?

  75. Mr Smelly

My hockey team please do not compare Larchmont/Mamaroneck as a merg like ETB. Everyone is pretty much aware that the ETB merge was travel viper hockey driven. Its fine, but at least admit that. My son`s modified team played ETB and even the modified team was an ETB merge team. Please do not tell me that those schools cannot field teams on their own. The ETB modified team had almost as big as a bench or more than our Mamaroneck modified team. By the way, Larchmont does not have a separate high school like Eastchester, Tuckahoe, and Bronxville has. Its out of hand right now.

  76. To all ETB Detractors

    Lighten up!
We are just having a little fun rooting for a team which is young and improving. This is a logical (unlike some others) merger of 3 schoools in the same town (for those of you who have said they are not, you obviously do not live in Eastchester, or you would know better), 2 of whom had failing programs and one which had none, so this is fun! These kids grew up together playing all other sports in the same Rec programs. We know we are eratic based on goaltending and whether we have all players present, by the way thanks for all of your opinions on some of our travel players I am sure they and thier families will take them into account when making future decisions (sarcasim). One thing we do know, and if you do not, you obviously have not seen this team play (I am guessing that is the case with most of you). When they are clicking, the first 2 lines are as exciting and as good as the best in the area. We also know we are VERY young and time is on our side, and the mean spirited comments by many of you motivates both players and fans, so please keep it coming. We know we are playing with house money at this point and will probably lose to Mammaroneck tonight, but maybe, just maybe the impossible will happen. If so, please keep motivating us for the next round. If not, so be it, it was a good season for us and we accomplished our goal of improving on last year, nothing more, nothing less. Like I said in opening, LIGHTEN UP, this team is VERY YOUNG and will only get better!! Let’s have some fun!

  77. My Hockey Team

    Mr Smelly,

Travel viper hockey driven? Interesting concept, but wrong.

  78. Travel Team

Combined teams are good when schools cannot reasonably field a competitive team on its own. Even than some fail, i.e., East Ramapo. Some have decent success, i.e., RT/H.

It’s not out-of-hand yet. No combined team has ever won anything of significance. Any merger should be considered carefully by the section.

  79. Prop

Good points Mr. Smelly, (if that is your real name).
Bronxville and Eastchester used to have their own teams. Bronxville at one point had an good young D2 team. Eastchester has had a team for over 20 years, also a D2 team. Were they great teams? No. But should every weaker program combine to make a better team? SHould Tappan Zee, Pearl River and Nyack all combine to make a new team? If they did they would be every bit as good as ETB. Just take the 6 best players form each school.
By the way, your point of Larchmont and Mamk is weak. They all go to the same school system. If Mamk wanted to make an Uber-Team, they would take all the Mamaroneck residents that go to Rye Neck High School. Everyone in rye neck is a Mamaroneck resident. Mamk would never do that.
As far as I know, ETB modified did not play Mamk ever. The combo thing should be done until the schools can field enough players to make their own teams. Then they should disband. This should be done only in situations when it is impossible to make a team, not so the team can be better. ETB should be a pilot program until the schools can function independently of one another.

  80. Travel Team

A combined, TZ, Pearl River and Nyack team wouldn’t be much better than what Pearl River already has.

The TZ and Nyack programs are the ones that need the help. A combined team their would still result in a League 4 team, albeit a little better and with more kids, than currently exists

  81. Mr Smelly-error

Yes we never played Etb you are correct, I saw the etb modified playing early in the year and it ran together with my sons team. My viper comment comes from the fact that many of those etb kids had played vipers hockey as I remember but if not its still obvious that the etb merger is to much. whats to stop Mamaroneck from merging with Rye? or for Rye to join Harrison, Blind Brook, Rye Neck, they are close communitys to. its unfair competition. That first line you have is real good I will agree with that. Any other team in our area that merges would inherit that kind of an all star team

  82. ToTonight

I think you could be right on the Mahopac/Sleepy game, but I think you are way off on the other two. Mamaroneck will score more than 6 goals and probably give up less than 3. Connor alone will outscore ETB and Hagen will dominate the blue line. Then add Fine, and Jackson ( how is he playing between not practicing with the team and suspensions?), and you have a blowout by the Tigers. From what i have read here, Suffern beat NR 10-3 while sitting their top two lines for part of the 2nd and all of the 3rd. Natoli sat the 3rd, and the 4th and 5th lines scored 3 goals against NR’s regular lines. NR only has 3 players who could play on a good league one team, O’Connor, Santiago and Meany. Suffern will win this game by whatever score Schelling wants them to win by. O’Connor and Santiago can’t play the whole game and Meany can’t hold off the top two lines of Suffern by himself. Then there is Natoli vs the NR goalie. I know people like to root for the underdog but, in this case, well, good luck with your rooting as it won’t make a difference. Mam

  83. for prop

good point but the ETB merger is at that point now. Next year they will probably have to cut players on the varsity team, so whats that about?

  84. Dear Mr. Smelley

Nothing is more amazing to me than people who have no idea what they are talking about, but yet are willing to talk. I believe that is defined as IGNORANCE!! There is one Viper on the Varsity roster!! I am willing to wager I am WAY more in touch with the facts than you, and the Vipers had nothing to do with this. This is all about giving kids a chance to play who otherwise would not. THOSE are the Facts, tell us all what your problem is with that. You use the term “Everyone is pretty much aware”, who is everyboby. As far as “do not tell me those schools cannot field a team on thier own”, Tuckahoe has 2 players on the team, how does your statement make sense? I could be wrong, maybe you are right, It’s a conspiracy!! Against who? I will give you one thing, at least you are willing to put yourself out there.

  85. ETB -This years Fordham bloggers

Last year, Fordham was the favorite team to hate in the blogging world. This year, ETB takes the cake. Fordham backed it up with a championship. ETB did not win league 3.
Right, but if Pearl River picked up the best 4-5 players out of Nyack and TZ, they would at least be a league 3 team, which is what ETB is.
Last time i checked ETB did not even win league 3, North Rockland did.
ETB should not bank on their young talent. Most likely that young talent won’t even be playing for ETB when they are seniors… it has happened before.

  86. Travel Team

    Information please.

How do the merged school finances work? If Tuckahoe has 2 players on the team, does the Tuckahoe district only pay for those 2, or is it a 1/3rd payment made by each of the 3 schools?

What happens if next year that no Tuckahoe players “make the team”. Is it still called ETB or EB. Or, are the 3 schools guarunteed a certain number of roster positions?

I’m asking this with malice, but only out of curiousity. Thanks.

  87. The Vision

I for one would really like to see a Tiger vs. Tiger matchup in the semifinals. With all the White Plains talk earlier in the year about how they would be at the top of league 1 I would love to see how they fair against a powerhouse like Mamaroneck. Also, this game could possibly settle the disputes between Rui and Conner. For the most part, everyone has agreed that these two are the best forwards in the section and it would be great to see them face off against each other. On a side note, I am predicting Suffern vs. Mamaroneck with a Mamaroneck overtime win the finals. The first game was 5-3 with a 2 goal difference, second game was 2-1, one goal difference, and the finals is going to be 2-2, with Conner scoring the winner in OT on a pass from Hagan.

    D1 Quarters

    Suffern 7 North Rockland 2
    Mamaroneck 7 E/T/B 3
    White Plains 6 Rye Town/Harrison 5 OT
    Mahopac 3 SH/I 2

    go Iona!!

    who cares about D2?

  88. Travel Team

Sorry. I meant I am not asking about these question for malicous reasons. My intention is not to pick-on ETB.

  89. Bob Marley agrees

that this blog is the perfect argument to legalize marijuana. Everyone is so on edge and ready to jump down peoples throats for the stupidest reasons.. take it easy, just take it easy. Just sit back and smile :) we got some great hockey to watch tonight, who cares how many vipers play where, (vipers Sk anyway) should we go out and find mr. smelly so we can take him out back and give him a beating??

  90. Biff

People who have no idea what they are talking about but are still willing to talk/write, should apply for a job with the NY Post. They like those qualities. And let’s not forget the best NY Post headline of all time. “Headless Man found in Topless Bar.”

  91. Mr Smelly

right now maybe one viper but years ago there are more. I guess my issue is that lets look at Mamaroneck. One school and they have been at it a long time and trying hard to build and maintain a program. We had some super years and some not so super. Now here comes etb with an all star team and its a possible jump to the head of the line. no growing pains, no building of the program, pretty much very competitive based on merger

  92. postman

hey BIFF, how’s it going? I haven’t been around much the last few days..Now, lets not get carried away there Mr. smelly, it would be a big stretch to say ETB is, how’d you put it? “etb with an all star team and its a possible jump to the head of the line”... suffern and mmk are more then willing to put you to the back of the line where you belong.

  93. Biff

I think most travel players play because they love the game, they love the camaradarie and they want to get better. They also know that they won’t be successful on a decent hs team without travel experience and they want to have a good hs experience. Most do not expect to even play club hockey in college, let alone play for a D3 team. We won’t even talk about D1. Most of these kids make their college decisions based on what is the best school they can get into that is a good fit. Hockey hardly factors into the equation. I know there are some players and parents who are unrealistic, but in my experience, they are a handful of people I have met. There are also players/parents who are willing to make some tradeoffs/sacrifices just to keep playing hockey beyond hs, but even most of them don’t believe they will ever play D1 or beyond.

  94. WPbigdawg51

the set is rolling deep tonight.. White Plains…. lets go

  95. Travel Team

Congratulations to the Hagen kid from Mamaroneck on your choice to go to St. John University for baseball.

  96. Dear Mr. Smelley

We have growing pains. We were in league 5 last year and lost to MMK in the first round. Moved to League 3 this year and had a record of 12-5. We are not on a par with the best teams at this time, and are hardly a threat to take over the section, as has been pionted out many times on this Blog. If we begin to dominate I can see the concern about competitiveness. If one of the schools prove able to field a team on a consistant basis, that school should uncouple after a few years of indicating this, and the others remain together. This was/is put together to give kids (who live in the same town) a chance to play when thy otherwise would not. If they work hard to improve and win as a team, why should we on the Blog demean them. Why is everyone worried about merged teams, none of them has ever won anything!

  97. tired of etb

well if the merger teams did not come on here and try and claim how good they are just bc they played with mamk last year then people are going to talk bak. many teams can play with mamk and suffern but in the end both teams manage to come up with the Win and just because u can skate with them for the first 2 periods does not mean anything. when you beat them then u have the right to talk. rye and pelham both can skate with suffern and mamk but they do not come on here talking abt how they will beat them when they are not even a merger hockey team and more respect to them. THE BEST TEAMS CAN STAND ALONE. Mamk will be looking to blow you guys out and whats the deal with jackson playing in playoffs? and a tiger vs tiger semi’s wud be nice and also connor against rui. however i do not think neither suffern nor mamk will lose until the semi’s.

  98. future

Are you seriously telling me the Bronxville is the same town as Tuckahoe and Eastchester? You better tell the Bronxville taxpayers that. They will laugh at you. Trust me on this, Bronxville residents DO NOT think they are in the same town as Tuckahoe and Eastchester. Bronxville, Tuckahoe and Eastchester all have their own library, their own police force, their own high school, their own post office, yet you say that it is all one town. Next you will tell me that Mt. Vernon (which is right next to Bronxville ) is also part of the same town.
Why would the same town have 3 different names?

  99. sec1 fan

Arent they all part of eastchester in whole?
Kind of like how all of the Rye’s are part of Rye. And how Pelham and Pelham manor are part of Pelham?

  100. jackson

the head guy of the section said i can play in the playoffs. so theres nothing you can do hes playing

  101. Another Suffern Dad

  113. 9-1 Mamaaroneck

MAMARONECK WAS UP 9-1 IN THE THIRD

  114. tired of etb

mamk is really showing etb that last year was a fluke…tell etb that they cant play with the big boys

  115. ETB

    Easy To BLOWOUT

  116. Old School Mountie

Anyone advise on playoff final scores?

  117. Old School Mountie

    Nevermind…Thanks

  118. Suffern

    No RTH/WP updates from anyone?

  119. ETB

ETB – before saying that you’re going to move up to League 2 or League 1 next year, please win your own League first! And please, get a goalie!

  120. Second Hand

    Heard WP won 6-3.

  121. Hockey fan

Mamaroneck runs away 13-1. Both Connors and Jackson with 4 goals apiece.

  122. math

wow. complete mamaroneck domination. i guess that shut up all the etb talkers. 13-1…..

  123. fiya

    6-3 wp

  124. Mamo

Mamk-WP. NO mamk people have really seen WP play this year but we are looking froward to do battle on Saturday. Will this game live up to the hype?

  125. Old School Mountie

You would think at 7-1 or 8-1 the Mamaroneck coach would call off the dogs and play his young kids. But no,he keeps pouring it on and runs the score up to 13-1. Class, and the lack thereof, really does show. I can’t wait ‘till Monday…

  126. Suffern

Did Mamo play their whole bench? Suffern did and with only a 5-0 lead.

  127. Mamo 4th line

Mamo was playing all their kids from the mid 2nd *8 or 9 to 1, until end of game. it looked like he just kept rotating thru all the lines

  128. DPW

    Old School Mountie,

Mamaroneck was playing their whole bench all 6 lines starting in the mid 2nd period so don’t even dare to say they had no class, Coach chiaperelli cannot help it if kids from the 3rd-6th lines were making plays, they barely get a chance to play especially the 2nd string goalie. also with ETB”s goalie it was imposible not to score if the shot was on net, at the beginning Mamk had 4 shots and 3 of their goals were from them. Also if you think Mamk was playing with out class Brian Conner was only put out at the end of the game so he could reach his 100th career goal and 200th point, so Old School Mountie i won’t even say stay classy all i have to say is shame on you, shame on you for saying Mamaroneck lacks class.

  129. Mamo

Lets not get too cocky with this victory Mamk. Tough game against White Plains on Saturday.

  130. Suffern

If the 3rd thru 6th lines were making plays, you can’t blame the team. If my kid was on a 5th line and got some ice time, I would want him to try and score. Let’s move on from those two posts. Tigers versus Tigers on Saturday. Doesn’t seem like much of a contest to me. Mamo wins easy. and Suffern also wins easy on Saturday setting up the inevitable clash of the titans on Monday.

  131. tiger coach

CONGRATS to BRIAN Conner on being only the third tiger to record 100 career goals, hope you get another 100, Coach Chap

  132. Old School Mountie

DPW, If I’ve offended you Mrs.Connor, please forgive me. Congratulations on your son’s 100th goal. See you Monday at Sport-O.

  133. DPW

Mrs. Connor thats funny, (im a player good guess though)im sure the Connors are out celebrating and correction its Conner. So just wait for monday. Old School Mountie you stay classy

  134. Hockey fan

How about congrats to coach Chap and Bruno for their 300th win tonight.
Go tigers! And yes, they did play everyone on the bench tonight.

  135. To Old Dirty Mountie

Old School Moutie making a mother joke? I have 100 retorts for that, but that would lower myself to your scumlike existence. Keep it clean jerk, and don’t name kids, and their mothers anonymously you lowlife.

  136. Biff

Can’t we all just get along? Two great teams. and To Old Dirty Mountie, you have definitely lowered yourself to somebody’s level. Well below Old School’s level. Old School made what would appear to be a reasonable assumption based on the # of goals scored by Conner and Jackson as well as the final score. Maybe his assumption was wrong. Then you overreacted and yada, yada, yada, we have ourselves a fight. Hope to see everybody on Monday. and as a Suffern fan, I happen to like the Mamo coaches.

  137. 200

connor had 117pts coming into this season…he does not have 200 career points

  138. Observer

Restating – ETB merger with Mt. Pleasant to try to beat Mamaroneck first

  139. postman

i love the “shame on you” line..really tough and makes me nervous. I hope if someone is mad at me they don’t use the dreaded “shame on you!!!!!!!!!” I really hope DPW is someones mother, can you imagine some guy yelling shame on you.. ha ha ha.. and to BIFF, i am getting a little tired of your middle of the road peace maker stance…. take a side and stop being the mediator all the time… grow a pair already.. LOL.. how was sutters last night?

  140. LoHud Hockey

Shame on you is one thing, but when its accompanied by an index finger waggle, or even worse brushing one index finger across the other, you better look out postman.

  141. postman

    LOL… very funny!!!!
