Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley with Harold Gutmann

Division II gets going

February
20

No. 8 seed Kennedy/Putnam Valley had only allowed three goals in a game three times this season, and had never allowed four. But No. 9 Somers/North Salem scored three in the first period last night en route to a 4-2 win. Colleague Dan Marra was there.

In the other two games, Section 1’s leading goal scorer, Matt Burdick, scored twice as No. 6 Pawling/Dover beat No. 11 Greeley 5-2, and No. 7 Ossining has now won 10 of 11 with a 2-1 victory over No. 10 Pearl River. Pawling, which uses its depth and physical play to wear out opponents, not surprisingly scored three times in the third period. Meanwhile, Ossining and its next opponent, Rye, may be the two hottest teams in Division II.

So here are Friday’s quarterfinal matchups:
No. 9 Somers/North Salem at No. 1 Pelham, Ice Hutch 7:30 PM
No. 7 Ossining at No. 2 Rye, Playland 3 PM
No. 6 Pawling/Dover at No. 3 John Jay, Brewster 7 PM
No. 5 Brewster at No. 4 Yorktown, Brewster 9 PM

By the way, the Section 1 tournament brackets are now posted on the Varsity Central page . And I didn’t want to forget that Jake Thomases has a story on first-year varsity players that start for playoff contenders (New players feeling the heat), featuring Pelham freshman Gus Harms.

I’ll post my thoughts on the Division I quarterfinals later today, and then the Division II quarterfinals on Thursday. In between I’m heading to the Meadowlands to see former classmates Chris Duhon and Luol Deng play. Just my luck—I’ve never been to a Nets game before, and now I get to go to the first game in seven years that won’t involve Jason Kidd.

  1. No Kidding

You are lucky not to see that crybaby Kid anyway. 11 million a year and he still cries. Jason is a black eye of sports. What a bum.

  2. HockeyFan

I wonder how much the refs were paid in the Ossining game. Pearl river touched the other team and got called. All and all good game to number 89 on Ossining and 28 on Pearl River.

  3. Diaper Dandies

Nice article today in JN about contributions from underclassmen. Below is a list of double digit frosh/soph goal scorers this season:

    LOCAL PRIVATE AND CATHOLIC:

    Rausch- Fordham 19
    Cambria- Iona 19
    Pesce- Rye Country Day 15

    LEAGUE 1:

    Mundinger- Rye 16
    Mastracola-Mahopac 14

    LEAGUE 2:

    Olivario- Scarsdale 31
    Miller- Brewster 27
    Flemming- Brewster 24
    Yarabino- Pleasantville 12

    LEAGUE 3:

    Hagen- Eastchester 32
    Dorgan- Ossining 31
    Annibale- Ossining 17
    Basmajian- Byram Hills 14
    Myers 13
    Basmajian- Byram Hills 11

    LEAGUE 4:

    Prunesti- New Rochelle 31
    Aurulio- Somers 15

Some of these kids have a chance for more in the playoffs. Others have a chance to reach double digits. Good luck to all.

  4. Diaper Dandies - II

    Tabachnick – Somers – 3.00

    Good luck to all.

  5. Big O

The Refs were biased towards Ossining??????

Every check #14 and #48 threw ended with their hands punching through an Ossining players head and in turn their head meeting the glass. Why is it always the refs fault? Pearl River played a great game, but they lost to a better team. Give them credit for the pride they brought out onto the ice. Look at all the chances Ossining had to make this a blowout.

#4 missed an easy stuff in within the first 5 minutes.

#16 hit a post and missed a wide open net after the PR goalie came out of the net and fell down.

    #15 hit two posts.

That isn’t to mention the two dozen rebounds left in front by the Pearl River goalie.

In simple terms, it had nothing to do with the officiating, which I agree wasn’t exactly up to par, but with respect to both teams. Still, that’s what happens in the playoffs, refs make fewer calls. It doesn’t help when the Pearl River player took a misconduct for cursing at the official and had to serve a double minor instead of a minor.

Pearl River didn’t have the guns to match up with a quicker Ossining team, just like Ossining doesn’t have the guns or speed to deal with Rye on Friday.

  6. Hey Big O

That sounds exactly like the PR Midget travel team that had to disband because it lost players and most of it’s games due to constant fighting and misconduct players. Players left because of the constant out of control behavior especially when they got down in a game or were outclassed. All the teams in the HVHL talked about their lack of discipline. Ossining IS the better team, and yes, Rye will be the better team next game. Rye is GOOD. And staying East of the River, how does anyone stop Connor?

  7. Pirates

I don’t know anything about the pearl river ice hockey travel. However, usually when young kids (15 and under, sometimes older) act in abusive ways during hockey it is because the coach quietly condones it, or the coach himself is out of control, screaming at the refs and or the kids. The kids follow their leaders behavior, I guess because their skulls have not hardened yet, or that they have yet to develop their own values, so when they see an adult act this way, they feel that tearing the head off an opponent is justified. I have seen girls games where the coach wanted the D to hit the girls (with fists) when the opponent tried to screen the goalie. You would like to think this is rare, but unfortunately it is not. I do know that the high school varsity and modified teams at Pearl River usually have real good reputations for sportsmanship. Travel hockey is wonderful, until a maniacal parent who reads a Vince Lombardi book and thinks that they can run a team of 7-12 years olds in the same fashion. And then people wonder why schools like to hire teachers to coach instead of Joe Shmo’s off the street just because they played at a high level at some point in their life. Some of those Joe Shmo’s are really good, while many are ill equipped to deal with todays kids.

  8. connor

you cannot stop connor, you can only hope to contain him, ha ha I think someone said that once.

  9. Pavel Bure

that was said in the Rangers 94 Stanley Cup Video about Pavel Bure on Vancouver…. and how many Cups did the Russian Rocket win?

  10. PR

Ossinings name is Ossining O???? Are they named after Oprah Winfreys magazine? Or just named after Oprah Winfrey? Does the O stand for O-face, as in the movie Office Space? It has been about 5 years since they got rid of their Ossining Indians name, don’t you think someone would be creative enough to come up with a new nickname? Jeez, just be the Ossining Tigers…. seems like 1/2 the high schools in America are named the Tigers anyway. Or how about the O-Faced Tigers. Now that would be a great mascot!! Can you picture a Tiger with an O-Face on a hockey jersey????

  11. Predictions

North Rockland will beat Suffern 15-0.

  12. sec1 fan

I totally agree, rumor has it that NR might play with 3 skaters and a cone in goal to make the game more fair for suffern

  13. nickname

    how about the “Ossining Ostriches”

  14. Jimmy the greek

I say 2-1 NR in the upset of the century, talk about a game where the team could look past their current opponent. Suffern might even be looking all the way until they play section X

  15. sup

    4-1 suffern

  16. Hey Jimmy

Welcome back from the dead. FYI, they played before while you were in a deep sleep and Suffern ran 3 lines in the 1st period, 4 lines in the 2nd, and the 4th and 5th lines in the 3rd period. They scored 3 times with their 4th and 5th line playing against NR’s regular lines. Top two lines sat all of 3rd period as did Natoli. Final score,10-3. Hey anything can happen if you can come back after all these years. Might be tough though. Mounties are just too strong for a team with 1 DMan and 2 Forwards.O’Connor, Santiago and Meany are all very good but after that…..

  17. Jimmy the greek

WAIT, I was dead??!! I thought I was still up for that job at Fox sports after those idiots fired me!!! Man that really stinks!!

  18. Jimmy the greek

Maybe I should give Imus a call, he can probably get me a job. I still know how to pick’em

  19. fanotgame

I think Ossining replaced its long time team name “Indians” with “Riverhawks”.

  20. somers

All i know is last night the N/SN fans were RIDICULOUS!!! kennedy could not even come close, in the stands or on the ice.

  21. somers

    Somers/North Salem that is

  22. Sec. 4

That is true, Kennedy seemed to have even more trouble coming back on the ice as they did with their fans. Excessive cursing chants followed every S/NS goal. This was the first time these two teams played with solid reffing, and the score showed that.

  23. Suffern/North Rockland

    3-2 North Rockland

  24. sup

this is true S/NS fans are intense and funny. They were so pumped to come wand watch them play. when S/NS played the first game where S/NS lossed it was still so loud for both sides. Last night was insane and S/NS took that energy and won.

  25. fanotgame

The early playoff games have all been tight. This is to be expected as preliminary rounds often match teams seeded near each other. The next round (Quarterfinals) have several matchups where the seeding positions are wider. Do we think this round will produce many more close matches, or will some teams start to take control early in a game? Other than Suffern/North Roc, things look like they could be pretty close in the Quarters.

  26. Prop

ETB is playing the best offensive team in the county. I see Mamk scoring double digits. Glaser does not let up more than 2 at the most. It is obvious that ETB hangs Hagan for quick breaks, Mamk would have to be moronic to let ETB cherry pick. The only way ETB makes this a game is if Mamk breaks down defensively and Mamks D tries too hard to be part of the offense instead of Just playing D. Mamk has seen speedy players like Hagan all season, this won’t catch them offguard.

  27. 3-2 uh huh

Besides the fact that Suffern’s fourth or fifth line players would be playing on NR’s first line with O’Connor and Santiago, and that Suffern rested its players most of the 10-3 game where NR played its starters the whole way, what is your rationale besides trying to be funny? There is NO WAY your prediction will even be close to the mark, however, it’s your right to say silly things.

  28. Hubris

So does that mean Suffern will be playing its 4th or 5th lines and backup goalie in the quarterfinal? Remember pride is one of the 7 deadly sins.

  29. Suffern

I am sure Suffern will start the game the same way they start every game. If they are fortunate enough to repeat the performance they had earlier in the year against NR and get a bunch of goals early, then they will/should empty the bench in the third period. Just because it’s a playoff game doesn’t mean you should run up the score by leaving your first/second lines/D in even with a huge lead. You would be very sorry if a first/second/line player got hurt after you left him in in a blowout. If it is close, and by close I mean four goal lead or less, they won’t be emptying the bench. Hopefully, they won’t look past anybody. They certainly won’t look past Mamaroneck.

  30. ?

Sorry guys, but you will see more close games and the underdogs will prevail. 5 of the 8 games played monday and tuesday were lower seeded teams that won.

  31. DPW

Also most of the upsets weren’t with the top ranked teams, i hardly doubt that teams like Suffern and Mamk will get upset, they obviously won’t look past the other teams, they both have state rankings for a reason. Though for other match ups like RTH and WP it could really go either way, although RTH has a higher seed WP beat them before and i’m sure both are trying to demonstrate it was a fluke, or on the other side prove it wasn’t.

  32. ?

    sec 4

Not sure what you mean about your comment about S/NS and JFK/PV, can you clarify. Little Fish

  33. Dirt McGert

    fanofgame

you are correct, ossining did replace the indians with the riverhawks, which was also dropped recently. Actually, Ossining has no mascot right now. The O is simply representative of ossining and is found in the middle of the field and on athletic helmets. opposing schools who have no idea what they are talking about have taken the O as some sort of mascot incorrectly

  34. Owls?

Was Ossining called the Owls at any point in thier history?

  35. Sec. 4

    Little Fish,
I’m not sure which comment you were referring to, but Kennedy fans have a very different approach to cheering than S/NS fans is what I was saying. When S/NS scored, immediately the Kennedy fans yelped out any curse they could at the team. Booing is acceptable from fans, but this was just sad. I felt embarrassed for most of them. In regards to the reffing, anyone who had been at the first two games knows that a select few kids on Kennedy were aiming to hurt other kids. Not a single clean hit was thrown by one of their players, and the refs turned a blind eye. With it being a sectional game, these cheap shots were called and S/NS was able to take advantage of Kennedy’s cheap play for the first time ever.

  36. LoHud Hockey

Maybe Ossining can get Barry O to be their mascot.

Major points to anyone who understands that reference.

  37. postman

BArry O was or maybe still is a ventrilaquist and magicianthat used to perform at schools..
ok i have to be honest, i didn’t really know that, but that is the power of the internet, anything you want to know is just a few clicks away..
