Division II quarterfinals preview
-
- February
- 21
Those of you who saw my preview in the paper over the weekend know I had the top four seeds advancing to the semifinals. But what are the chances of that happening? So I’m going with one upset. And I expect all four games to be somewhat close.
Division I quarterfinals, Friday (potential Saturday makeup times in parentheses)
No. 9 Somers/North Salem (16-8-1) at No. 1 Pelham (15-8-1)
Where: Ice Hutch 7:30 (Ice Hutch, 4)
Breakdown: Pelham hasn’t quite recaptured its dominant form from early in the season, but it still has tons of experience playing under pressure and, to be honest, I just don’t think it’s losing to a League 4 team. Somers/North Salem has a dominant forward (Joe Marasco) and a strong defense, but they are 0-3 against top-division teams (two losses to Mahopac and 9-1 loss to Stepinac).
Prediction: Pelham is eager to get past the quarterfinal round after last year’s upset. Pelham 6, Somers/North Salem 3.
No. 7 Ossining (13-9) at No. 2 Rye (14-8-2)
Where: Playland, 3 (Ice Hutch, 8 )
Breakdown: The two hottest teams in Division II  Ossining has won 10 of 11, while Rye has won 8 of 9. The difference is that the Garnets have done it against much tougher competition, with wins against Pelham, Scarsdale, Brewster and Whitesboro, while Ossining is 0-4 against League 2 teams (4-3 loss to Yorktown, 3-1 to Fox Lane, 7-3 to White Plains and 7-6 to Scarsdale), and has no games against League 1—though of course that was all before the win streak.
Prediction: The Garnets have played really well for six weeks. Even in the loss (3-2 to Suffern) they played well. Ossining’s comeback story has been remarkable, but I’m afraid it ends here. Rye 5, Ossining 2.
No. 6 Pawling/Dover (11-9-2) at No. 3 John Jay (8-12-1)
Where: Brewster 7 (Brewster, 7:15)
Breakdown: The teams met earlier this season, with John Jay winning 5-2 in the final of the Fox Lane tournament. In their last game two weeks ago, the Indians snapped a five-game losing streak by beating Clarkstown North 2-0. Normally a two-week layoff would worry me, but it should give the Indians time to adapt to their recent coaching change.
Prediction: P/D has the depth and the strength to wear teams down, and it has won five in a row. I’m not entirely comfortable picking a team I’ve never seen play  on the other hand, seeing teams hasn’t helped me yet either. Pawling/Dover 4, John Jay 3.
No. 5 Brewster (10-13-1) at No. 4 Yorktown (15-7)
Where: Brewster, 9 (Brewster, 9:15)
Breakdown: Yorktown swept Brewster, winning 2-1 on Jan. 4 and 5-4 on Feb. 8. Interestingly, it wasn’t standout Frank DiMaggio doing the damage in those games, it was Vinny Matranga, who had six of his 18 goals in those contests. Also, while the margin was the same, Brewster was outshot 38-15 in the first game but outshot the Cornhuskers 29-27 in the rematch.
Prediction: Yorktown has won 9 of 11, with victories also coming against Rye Town/Harrison and John Jay. This should be entertaining, but I’ll take the hot team in this one. Yorktown 5, Brewster 3.

Final Mamk 13 ETB 1
lohud are u 100000% sure of that?
why would they force rye to lose home ice advantage neways….
Conner had a hat trick and Jackson had 4 goals
There’s no way there was 800 + at that game, maybe 300 +.
HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MYYYYY GOOOOODDD Mamaroneck completely pwned ETB 13-1 all the ETB players and fans good call by saying they would play a close game and possibly upset, THIS IS WHY ETB IS IN LEAGUE 3 NOT 1 Conner officially reached goal #100 and 200 points congrats
Playland had no ice for Rye on Saturday Manhattanville has it. Where did the game end up? Hope another rink helps them out
Any Suffern/NR or Pac/Sleepy scores?
I agree with DPW i was at that game, ETB had no chance from the beginning and it seemed that ETB was still playing their 1st and 2nd lines even till the last second. Im sure it will be pretty quiet without all these ETB fans talking about upsets and my god though they lost by 12 goals!! that was complete domination, no i think that was straight up r*pe
Cody King – Journal News Player of the Year. He might not have the most points but come on… tonight was absolutely the most clutch performance of the entire season in Westchester
‘Pac-3 SH-1
Suffern 5, NR 0
Mahopac over Sleepy 3-1
Tiger vs. Tiger!
Mamo vs. White Plains!!!!!
RT vs. WP was a much closer game than the score suggested, RT played their hearts out and at no point in the game gave up. The fans were into it and both teams showed tremendous heart. Congrats to WP, they played a fantastic game and good luck vs. Mamaroneck.
Congratulations Mamaroneck on your “blowout”? i guess thats the most appropriate term i guess all the ETB people won’t be posting for a while LOL, well good luck VS WP im sure they will not overlook them and then hopefully move on to suffern, i would love to see Mamk upset suffern
Yes it would actually be too easy to tear up ETB, though the bloggers from ETB deserve it. ETB has a loooooong way to go before they can play with the big boys. 1 real good player and about 5 good players on a team does not = a sectional championship. ETB was totally worn down by the mid 2nd period, obviously they have not run in to a team like Mamk before. Mamk got to play their JV players that they brought up, play their backup goalie for the entire 3rd period, and still the last 5 minutes or so had to go to running time because the score was 10 goals differential.
I don’t see how a team would go in to this game with the game plan to goal hang their first line center the whole game… and not have him help out down low with the defense (which is what a center is supposed to do). That may work in league 3, but that pond hockey stuff doesnt work in league 1.
Next up for Mamaroneck is White Plains, this is a dangerous team for mamaroneck.
Oh and welcome back Brettzky Jackon who was hurt most of the season… 4 goals. That extra offense will certainly help Mamaroneck. Congrats to Connor for getting his 100th career goal, and Coach Chap on his 300th win. It was just a big fat party in the jungle Thursday Night.
I heard Suffern blew the 5-0 lead and lost to North Rockland 6-5 in OT. Just like the Rangers did to Montreal!! Just kidding.
internet-
Yes, that is a definite. Playland probably didn’t have the ice time or the ability to move anything around to create some for the Rye game on Saturday, however being as how the manager of the Ice Hutch is Ed Witz, who happens to be the coach of Pelham, he was probably sympathetic to the cause and helped John Orlando out by moving some stuff around to get an extra 2 hours of ice time (on top of the two he had to make room for for the Pelham game) so Rye could play a game. Rye will still wear their white jerseys & sit on the home bench for the game, even though it’s at the Hutch (much like SH/I did against PR last week at SOR).
I can’t help myself on this one….Mamaroneck is totally classless and the coach is leading that parade. 13 goals is ridiculous!!! You get up 6 or 7 goals, you call off the dogs. I never met the coach but I have played with and know guys like him. Not good enough to win have to humiliate the opponent. This coach is clueless. Someone should send them a tape of Suffern, Mahopac…teams that show a little class. Oh that’s right..Mamaroneck will see this first hand on Monday when they get waxed. Suffern gets up 4-0, they lock it down and go into a defensive mode. They may end up winning 6-0, 7-1…but 13.This coach is a punk and their season will deservedly end abruptly!!!
Here is the updated D1 bracket:
http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=257314&tclass=
And the D2 one:
http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=257315&tclass=Section%201%20Division%202
umm what? he had 117 going into this season…unless he had 20pts tonight, he didnt reach 200
In a chess match, Mahopac beat S/I 3-1 on an empty net goal. shots on goal were 25-25. Both goalies were great. The 3 goals scored in the game were picture perfect.
I am going to “try” and defend the mamo coach on this one. I didn’t see the game, but I know that when he gets up by a lot of goals, he does take his first line off, he just doesn’t tell his 3rd and 4th lines not to score. I am sure none of his first liners scored after they reached 8. If they did oh well, I’m wrong, no defending then.
WWOAAAAAAAAAAHHH IIOONNAA PREPP!!! CHSHL CHAMPS!!!!
Thomas McKenna,
Were you at the game? Nobody needs to defend themselves from your dopey claims. were you at the game? This is the playoffs, not gym class hockey. Everyone played and they all played hard. You are a clueless person, to call the coach a punk is ridiculous. I would like to see you do this to his face, it aint gonna happen because only a true punk would write it on an anonymous blog. Were you at the suffern game or the mamk game? ETB had about 30 shots on net, how is that running it up? The Mamk 2nd string goalie played the whole 3rd period, did Gabriel play the whole 3rd period? Gabriel played 15 minutes the whole year. Suffern can’t blow out anyone, they don’t have the offense, it has nothing to do with class. YOU are obviously a Suffern person who lives and dies with a high school hockey team… just kinda sad.
independant fan who watched the game. Mamaroneck played what looked like 8 lines. Many young players numbers I have never seen before. They are a really good team and its a bad matchup for ETB and thats that
Saw WP vs. RTH. I didn’t think the game was as close as the score. Rui looked off. I heard he was battling the flu. Could have scored 4 or 5 with a little more spark. WP goalie let in a few soft ones early but played well early in the third when RTH was pressuring. Novick tried to do it on his own (no Urban for support), but WP D men collapsed on him all nite. He still scored 2 and assisted on the other. Heroic effort. WP looked pretty darn good. The Tiger vs. Tiger semi will be a war. Suffern will have a huge advantage in conserved energy against the survivor in the finals. Can’t see Pac giving the Mounties much of a game.
On the D 2 front, if tomorrow’s games are cancelled, WP may finish their 3rd playoff game Saturday before several D 2 teams finish their first playoff game. And the D2 winners have to play on back to back days (some with less than a 24 hour turnaround coupled with a loss of home ice). Maybe next year the Section will plan for snow and not have Wednesday as an off day.
Congrats to Iona on their championship. They had a mid season swoon, but picked it up at the right time.
The RTH – WP was close. To open up the third period, Novick made a great pass to Mckinney for a split the defense breakaway…that got stuck in a wet ice puddle. Both teams played hard and I think both teams are battling the flu…I think White Plains with two Flu and RTH with 4 including their top players and from what he sounded like, coach too. WP played really well, attacking the puck, swarming the net and their leading scorers showed up tonight. This is shaping up to be a nice rivalry. Its a shame that RTH that had such a wonderful season ran out of gas and ran into a great team in WP. The RTH over exceeded expectations this year and those that bashed the team early on this year for making the move to league 1, stand corrected. Best wishes to WP for the rest of the playoffs.
By the way, not to make it clear, the flu thing was just a comment not an excuse or making a bigger thing out of it. Just a statement, following up somebody’s mention of it and the bug going through all the schools
suffern cant blow out anyone, they dont have the offense?
suffern had more goals scored going into tonight before mamaroneck scored 13 tonight
I was in attendance and the Mam Coach CLEARLY ran up the score. Connor was on the ice late in the 3rd period, souly to get his 200th goal in front of the big jungle croud. Innappropriate and classless…yes. Theres no argument. An interesting side note: There were probably at least twice as many ETB fans at Hommocks than Tiger fans. Congrats to the Tigers on a dominant win. Whatever you say about ETB, you cannot deny the strides they have taken in the last few years, and will continue to take. So they lost to a top ten team in the state…it happens. The positives: A playoff victory of Scarsdale and being extremely competitive in League 3.
Every Suffern parent I know, and I am one, have the greatest respect for Coach Chap and wish Mamaroneck good luck until they play us. We met you in the lobby after the last time we played and you were a class act and a good guy. People who speak for us are not always us, we respect you, and your team. For those who say we can’t score, well, then you don’t watch our team and understand how we play. The End.
Oh and by the way, don’t judge the Mounties ever by their scores. Tonight was an example, once they had the game firmly in hand in the 2nd period, Coach Schelling started putting out 4th and 5th line kids with the top lines to try and get them their first goal even though the score was still only 5-0 and he sat the first two lines the entire 3rd period and ran 3 lines from the get go. Additionally the last half of the 3rd period was all freshman and sophomores even though it was only 5-0. Every player left feeling good about themselves and it was a TEAM effort. NR only managed 8 shots on net the entire game. The NR goalie actually played well as he had to face 38 shots (at least). Problem for NR was they had two solid first liners but no one to help them, and Meany played really well in the game with some clean physical play. NR couldn’t keep Santiago and O’Connor out there all night but at times it seemed they had no choice and they just got tired. Excellent win for Suffern, and they will have to keep raising their level as the competition keeps improving.
you dont ever need to win by 10+
I DIDNT NO YOU HAD TO WIN BY 12 GOALS TO GET GET TO 300 WINS
I ALSO GUESS THAT YOU COULDNT SCORE YOUR 100 GOAL OR YOUR 200 POINTS AGAINST A GOOD GOALTENDER
CLASSLESS ACTS
Harold , now you have a two game lead on me, and I can only pick up one in this round.
Pelham 5 Somers/No Sal 2
Rye 8 Ossining 1
JJ 5 Pawling 2 ( I think you’re wrong here, big time)
Yorktown 4 Brewster 3 in OT
I just would like to say, Kudos to Rye Town/Harrison on a great season, and congrats and good luck to the Seniors who carried this team for four years now – Novick, both McKinneys and Keegan, etc. You carried this team for four years and were essential for developing the program. Good luck in the future, we hope you continue to play hockey, wherever you go, as you are all great players. Not sure how good the team will be next year without you, but you helped develop a foundation for success.
Best of luck on all your future endeavors!
sufern does not have to win by 13 goals
the coach,organization and the players
play one one the best defensive hockey systems i have ever seen
and then there is natoli
by far the best goalie i have seen
suffern can and usually does shut down it opponents
all roads go thru suffern
i am not a suffern fan at all
the rth/wp game was not that close
rth goalie kept rth in the game
w.p timing was off
and most of the play was in the rth end
sometimes rth tried the hail mary pass
only to be stopped
had the wp goalie not let in 2 very vwery very sloppy goals
and looked very sleepish on routine saves
it would have been no contest
Only an non-informed person would make those statements about mamk running it up. I know it is a knee jerk reaction to lash out when you get pasted 13-1, but calling people classless is in it of itself….CLASSLESS. Especially when you do it anonymously on a blog.
If you kknew what you were talking about you would know that Mamaroneck had their JV players on the ice in the 2nd and 3rd, and their backup goalie in and ETB and their amazing offense still could not score. How about this, if you were worried about Mamk scoring so many goals, maybe you should not have your best players goal hanging looking for the long pass. Maybe you should have had your best players helping out down low and helping the D and goalie a little bit. But that was the game plan wasnt it? ETB wanted to outscore Mamk, they have been hanging their best center and cherry picking all year, so when that bush league stuff doesnt work against Mamk, they get all upset when it is basically a power play for Mamk all game because no forwards are helping out on D.
If Pawling scored 12 vs. ETB, what did you think was going to happen vs. Mamaroneck?
What is this girls T-Ball league?
How about this, lets call it a tie. Everybody wins. “if you had fun… you won!!!!!” Does that make anyone feel better. ETB saw last night, how far they need to go to be a league 1 team. Learn from it. Move on.
Pawling had to score 12 goals-they gave up 9. They would’nt have won if they didn’t score 12
A Rye fan but also want to send my CONGRATS to ALL the SENIORS (and your parents) on ALL teams that may be out of the playoffs. You’ve played your butts off for many years and I know it must be tough bowing out. Keep playing. It’s a great game!!
Yeah, “Give me a break,” you’re right. When Suffern calls off the dogs in the third period, it’s like they’re playing girls t-ball. They’re a bunch of girls for dumping the puck and playing defense for the entire third period when they’re up big. No manly team would do that. It’s just too bad Mamaroneck, with all its manly men, hasn’t been able to beat that bunch of girls since 2006. Keep playing masculine hockey.
Unless its a made up name..Mr. Thomas Mckenna, did not do his trash talking “annonymously on a blog”.
Hey Charlie Everywhere,
Every time Mamaroneck dumped the puck in to the zone, it went in the goal. Sorry about that clown. Mamk score once for every 3 shots they took!!!!! what are they supposed to do, NOT SHOOT? whaa whaaa whaa, stop the whining.
“Yeah, “Give me a break,” you’re right. When Suffern calls off the dogs in the third period, it’s like they’re playing girls t-ball. Thank you Charlie! Another great post to tape up in the Suffern Locker Room. You really know how to fire up those Suffern girls!!!!
“go to the tape” I took that post as sarcasm, and actually thought it was funny.
ETB should go to L2 next year, play the L2 schedule, play L1 out of conf games, go upstate again, and get set to make a serious run in the playoffs a year from now. In the end it doesn’t matter if it’s 2-1 or 13-1; a loss is a loss and you’re out. But this was a great, but no doubt painful learning experience for a group of younger players. Watch out next year.
mamaroneck’s offense has been outscored by that defense only ‘bunch of girls’ 12-5
Against North Rockland, Suffern scored three in the first, two in the second, and (surprise surprise) zero in the third. Just like when they had their arch rival Clarkstown North down 6-0 after two periods and scored just 1 in the third.
I love how everyone pretends it’s so difficult to play against an inferior team and not run the score up to 13. Like the puck just ends up in the goal accidentally four times in the third period and there’s nothing you can do about it because you’re just that good. Suffern has been better than any other Section 1 team for the past three years, and somehow this never happens with them. Can somebody explain that?
And by the way, when I raise objections to running the score up, it isn’t because I feel bad for the losing team. It’s because it’s plain classless behavior, it makes the whole event uncomfortable to watch, and it makes the victory less satisfying to celebrate.
And “tape,” I was being sarcastic on that other one.
SECTION II- #3 Shen vs. Lasalle in the Section finals
SECTION III- #2 West Genny v. #9 Ithaca in the Section finals
SECTION V- #6 AQ was eliminated by Greece last night and #5 Pittsford was eliminated by Fairport. Fairport vs. Greece in the Section finals
SECTION VI- St. Joes (catholic) v. Williamsville North. If Willy North wins, theyre in. If Willy North loses to the catholic league team, then regular season champ #8 Lancaster advances
SECTION X- #4 Massena vs. #7 Potsdam
Hey Give me a break….what you just did is classless. Trashing the ETB team. Whats wrong with you? Those are kids who had a great season and played their hearts out. You claim Mam had their JV players on the ice in the 2nd and 3rd…I dont know if your right or wrong, but I know with less than 5 minutes to go Connor WAS on the ice. That’s a joke. An absolute joke. Your right…ETB has a long way to go, but they’ve also come a long way. Division 5 last year, and now possibly Division 2. It takes a long time to develop the type of powerhouse Mam has. That doesn’t mean you trash them anonymously on the blog as you are doing. Grow up enjoy your win.
Oh brother, not another poster talking about class. Is this hockey or manners class?
ETB got smoked, they were supposed to get smoked. It is fact, not a crack, that Mamaroneck had JV players playing in the second adn third period. I will name them, Scott hagan, Dean Chiapparelli, Nick Plett, Matt Donaghy, Sam Christianson. DID you see those kids? Well they played all year on JV or the majority of the year on JV.
I state this only because you claim that Mamaroneck tried to run up the score. With their backup goalie? and JV players? and 4th and 5th line forwards?
This does not take away from ETB season, but when Mamk gets attacked for trying to run up the score, you have to set the record straight.
ETB bloggers do a disservice to their kids by making the focus on the score and their perception that Mamk ran up the score, and not that they had a good season. ETB bloggers can’t just say, “we were outplayed severely and out of our league”. They have to make up excuses like they did all season. I guess you could not fall back on “our travel players were in mexico” this time. So you attack any team that beats you, and never admit that you were outplayed. Or you say things like “mamk was better, but they ran up the score and have no class”. That in itself shows No class.
Good luck next year.
Face it ETB didn’t belong on the ice playing Mamaroneck. They didn’t have the goalie they did last year to keep it close. Nothing against anyone but Mamaroneck could of scored 20. There is no right way to beat a team 10-1. Keep away, 4 corners, 4 passes before you shoot just makes the other team pissed on the ice. Continually scoring pisses off the parents, playing everyone doesn’t work cause the 4th line players want to make a impression and sometimes score.
Running time would end it earlier but no one goes for that. Why not just have the lower level teams play for their own championship and keep it simple.
Again, why doesn’t Suffern ever have this problem?
the mamo coach ran his game the way he felt was best for his program. this is sports, whats the beef? ok, if you were coaching you’d have done it differently. it’s a different approach, not a “proven” better approach. the NE Pats had no problem running up their scores and that was done by one of the best pro coaches to ever coach (i know he lost this year but he has 3 super bowls to his credit). I’m also going to concede that the Pats coach is dealing with adults not kids but there are several pro coaches that have the same disposition that you do.
Maybe “Chap” felt that Conner should be afforded the best opportunity to get his 100th. What if he sits him 1 goal short and he doesnt get it in a losing effort to WP(which would be his last HS game). Are you saying “well thats too bad” because he should only be allowed to get it against a stronger program? After all the goals hes scored against the toughest competition? I think the coach did it right, the kid deserved it.
I’ve also been reading the ETB posts. They indicate that this is a young team that will challenge the “bigboys” in the years to come. If I’m Chap and get the opportunity to see the future mamo players against the upstart ETBers, I’m not holding them back. I want to get a feel for what maybe a future matchup. I don’t know for sure but I’d guess that Chap accomplished giving his younger players some confidence about their varsity futures.
Lastly, I don’t want to dismiss your point of view. It has merit, I’m just trying to point out that there might not be a clear cut “right or wrong”.
there is a reson why Mamaroneck never won a State Title
Hey long time.
Suffern won the state championship once and they are the only state championship team to ever come out of section 1. So everyone else is in the same boat as mamaroneck. Obviously you are bitter towards mamk, but the fact is that they are the best team in westchester over the last 30 years.
Most westcherster wins
Most westchester championships
Most players, the only school with a varsity, JV, and Modified. 25 kids on each team.
All this is due to the hard work of the coaches, the MYHA, the parents and kids.
When other schools are willing to work this hard, year round, then they too will probably be challenging for the section every year too.
challenge for the section every year?
mamaroneck hasnt challenged for the section in like 4 years
Mamaroneck has had tremendous talent over the years and can not get it done(State Championship) the only consistant thread is the coaching.
are the DII games canceled ?
