High (School) sticking

Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley

Thursday results, Saturday schedule

February
22

Not much seperates Iona Prep from Stepinac, considering they split six games this season and the final combined score was 20-19. But that 20th goal, which came off the stick of who else but Cody King, decided a great series and gave the CHSHL title to the Gaels.

Matthew Brown had the perfect angle for King’s final goal, and the celebration that followed.

Though I’m sure its small consolation, Stepinac now knows how Iona Prep felt after losing in three games last year, and we all know how that turned out—a lot of the Gaels said they used the memory of last year’s disappointment as motivation to drive them this season.

Here’s the link to my story along with articles from Alex Myers, who saw White Plains beat Rye Town/Harrison 6-3 (White Plains gets over hump), and Eric Lebowitz, who watched Mahopac overcome Sleepy Hollow/Irvington 3-1 (Mahopac moves on to semifinals).

In the other games from last night, Mamaroneck had 15 players record points in a 13-1 win over Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville (though interestingly, shots were only 36-34, which shows how much that stat means I guess), and Suffern shut out North Rockland 5-0, despite getting no goals from its first line. Injured Suffern defenseman Greg McCarron scored and Brett Jackson had four goals for Mamaroneck coming off his injuries/suspension, so its good to see everyone is at full strength.

Now this is where those Suffern wins over Mamaroneck become so important, and not just for home-ice in a potential final—the Mounties get Mahopac, who it beat 5-0 and 8-1, while the Tigers have to deal with dangerous White Plains. Ironically enough, for everyone who wanted to re-seed after the first round, look what would happen now if you re-seeded after the quarters—Suffern-White Plains and Mamaroneck-Mahopac.

I mentioned how big Thursday was, with five playoff games. Well there’s six on Saturday. As mentioned in the comments last night, the Division II quarterfinals were pushed back a day, so here’s the updated schedule:

Division I semifinals
No. 4 Mahopac-No. 1 Suffern at Sport-O, 6 p.m.
No. 6 White Plains-No. 2 Mamaroneck at Hommocks, 8:15 p.m

Division II quarterfinals
No. 9 Somers/North Salem-No. 1 Pelham at Ice Hutch, 4 p.m.
No. 7 Ossining-No. 2 Rye at Ice Hutch, 8 p.m.
No. 6 Pawling/Dover-No. 3 John Jay at Brewster, 7:15 p.m.
No. 5 Brewster-No. 4 Yorktown at Brewster, 9:15 p.m.

i wanna say thanks to everyone on the blog who supported our team this year its been a great four years and a great climb up the league ladder. Good luck to the remaining teams and to my boys keep your heads up keep moving forward you proved you belong keep provin them wrong!

its been a privlage playing for you and with you i’ll never forget you guys

  2. bypolar

nice job by the mam team…real hockey team although the coach of mam was classless…did he actually play any of his players in the third that were sitting on the bench for most of the year…was it 10- 1 after 2???? probably not…he was more interested in getting connor his numbers than playing all of his other players even though they have at least one more game…etb had no goaltending and not much offense but like east of the river said the gulls must of had practice so the results were what they were…mam will go down to wp…good luck next year minus some very talentd kids…see you next year stepinac

HOW ABOUT IONA PREP… WHAT A DIRTY GOAL BY CODY KING. PLAYER OF THE YEAR NO DOUBT. WATCH THAT VIDEO!

  4. IONA FAN

I definitely agree that the Step/Iona series was a great one. But I have to say that Iona deserved to win. They definitely out played Stepinac in that 3 game series. Iona’s attack of Molinaro,King and Cambria could not be touched and Stepinac had NO ANSWER FOR THEM. Iona outshot Stepinac in the 3 game series 128 to 84. Stepinac’s Miano was outstanding but he was really the only one to cause any damage to Iona in three games.

The other person who should be mentioned is McCabe. DEFINITELY the #1 overall Defensemen in all of Westchester. In three games he must of played 120 minutes. He was never off the ice and that’s a good thing because he SHUT down Stepinac’s number 1 scoring threat (Datino) to 1 point in 3 games.

Congrat’s to Iona. I guess playing all those non conference games this year (Suffern, St. Mary’s, Monroe Woodbury and Bergen CAtholic), really prepared them for this series.

They play for the NY State CAtholic Championship game next week and the good news is that Lopez is back. Who knows, Iona might be able to beat St.Joe’s from Buffalo for the first time EVER!

GO Iona! YOU MADE US SO PROUD!!!!!!

  5. Reading the Future

Nice call by “fanotgame”, he or she posted on one of the blogs earlier in the day on Feb. 21st. It’s alsmost like he wrote the script! A little scary…... By the way do you have the Mega #’s…LOL

Regarding the outdoor classic at Murray’s tonite: The hard ice conditions should favor Iona who has the better skaters. But, Reagan is 3-1 vs. the Gaels this season with his only loss coming after playing a bunch of Jr games and then rushing down (presumably tired) from a jr showcase in MA. A refreshed Reagan may be difficult for Iona to solve. Look for this one to be tight all the way through. Maybe another OT thriller. Iona wins it in a squeaker 3-2, but only if Dimario plays strong and the rest of the Gaels stay out of the sin bin.

  6. OMG

HOLY CRAP!! this could be the new article after the game. That was intense!! I got goose bumps!! also Cody King did get the game winner and an open net dump in goal but cambria was MVP of the series with 5 goals and he single handedly dominated game 3 with puck control, forechecking passing hitting in the corners he did it all and that line played every other shift, it was ”# 10, 12, 29” getting on the ice for every other shift- how did they do that??

  7. ETB

ETB had their full squad vs. Mamaroneck. They are awful.

  8. Champs!

    OMG,

MVP should of been given to the LINE of Cambria,King and Molinaro. They DOMINATED Stepinac. Stepinac had no one to control either one of Iona’s #1 line. These three players played with Stepinac for three games.Pure DOMINANCE!

What a difference between game 2 and game 3. Think Iona had only 2 penalties in game 3 versus 10+ in game 2. Big difference because you didn’t have to use Molinaro,Cambria or King on the Penalty kills. By the way, think Stepinac had only 1 power play goal in the total series. Oh yeah… a “Shout Out” to McCabe, who dominated the defensive zone in all three games. And DiMario, had a Terrific 3 game series. Congrat’s to Iona Again….....

Now go and Beat St. Joe’s!

  9. hello

Mamaroneck played their JV players in the 2nd and 3rd period and their backup goalie the third period. I doubt anyone from ETB is complaining, this is what happens when the #6 team in the state plays a keagye 3 teamd. Next year maybe league ETB should not enter the playoffs if people are going to cry when they get pasted. Mamk, did everything in their power to play kids who are not even on the varsity!!! Can Mamk help it if their JV is better than the ETB Varsity? I just don’t think ETB knew (as well as many ill informed bloggers from ETB) that Mamk has one of their best teams in school history. This is largely overshadowed due to Sufferns amazing undefeated season. The only other thing mamk could have done is do the 5 pass rule, where when you enter the offensive Zone, you have to make 5 passes before you shoot. And trust me, on the varsity level, that would have been even more embarrasing. It would have looked like taunting. I did not hear crying when Pawling scored double digits, so why are people crying now? This is what happens when an excellent team play a mediocre team, it is like playing your little brother, it is a no win situation.
Scenario 1 – If Mamaroneck loses to ETB, it is a huge story and ETB boasts how they always knew they could beat Mamk
Scenario 2 – Mamaroneck wins 6-5, ETB claims “we showed we could play with anyone including the 6th best team in the state”. Mamaroneck comes off as weak and over-rated.
Scenario 3- Mamaroneck manhandles them (in a playoff game, ETB knowing full well that they will be playing a great team) 13-1 and people complains because Mamaroneck should not have beat them so bad. BOO HOoo. Should the coaches have told their JV players not to shoot or play hard. Forget Mamaronecks 3rd and 4th and 5th lines…Mamk played JV PLAYERS!!!!!!! Should the coach have called up the modified team and had them play ETB varsity to make it a fair game???? ETB’s flying circus offense could not score on JV players and Mamks backup goalie. Should the coach have told his goalie to just let in a few? Hey, I know it stinks to get blown out, but you know what? That is what was supposed to happen. One of the best teams in section 1 vs. a league 3 runner up = 13-1. You can always opt out of the playoffs next year if it is too much for anyone. But I am sure the players and coaches are fine with it. The parents who had to watch their kids who kicked butt all year had to watch their kids get blown out.

  10. Charlie Everywhere

    You stay classy, Mamaroneck.

  11. oh brother

When you think you are a really good team and then you get blown out and shown that you are not great compared to the best teams… it stings. This is why people have to grab on to something…. anything and call a team classless. And no excuses this time about players missing. You could not use that excuse, so you call names. Sad.

  12. hmmm

    hey hello,

not to rain on ur parade but mamaroneck is not number 6 in NYS. they are 10 by the “official” rankings

    newyorksportswriters.org

  13. ETB

Going back to an old argument about the ETB players. On this blog there was a lot of talk when a few? of their best players missed ETB games to go to AAA travel games. Those players played last night and in the third period played against many of Mamaronecks JV call ups. Therefore the AAA travel ETB kids are good players but they are clearly not distanced from the high school players as they may think. I would think a top collegiate prospect would be able to do more than those guys did last night. Not a knock on those kids, just a reality check that there are a lot of players right in this immediate area just as good or better. If these kids were over and above the rest it would have shown last night, especially when Mamaroneck went to 5 and forward lines

  14. Charlie Everywhere

    “oh brother,”
Not an ETB fan here. It isn’t name-calling to say that a 13-1 win is classless. 9-1 at the end of two periods proves Mamaroneck is the better team, like you said. Four more goals in the third period says something completely different about Mamaroneck. People who call Mamaroneck classless aren’t ETB fans reaching out desperately for something to cling to after a devastating loss. That final score smacks any rational person right in the face and screams, “Classless!”

And “hello,” I refer you to my post on the previous blog entry.

  15. OT

    ionas nothing special

  16. Massena

Section X finals on Tuesday at Clarkson University. Massena vs Potsdam. When is the Section I final?

  17. E/T/B FAN

IT OK WE LOST AND THATS FINE THEY OUT PLAYED US IN EVERY AREA BUT CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN TO ME Y THERE BEST PLAYER WAS OUT WITH 3 MIN TO GO IN THE GAME AND THE SCORE 12-1 AND THE NEED TO SCORE TO REACH 100 GOALS AND 200 POINT WAS THAT HIS LAST GAME OF THE SEASON???

  18. LEAGUE 1

I guess they were correct, ETB does stand for “easy to beat” Last nights games between suffern/NR and Mamaronceck/ETB really showed the difference between top league 1 teams and the league 3 and 4 teams. NR and ETB were so pumped up after their win the other night and many on this blog were saying that these were 2 very good teams (more ETB then NR though)and were even thinking there would be an upset. Well you guys have seen how hockey is really supposed to be played and now know the real deal. I don’t think Mamaroneck will have a problem with WP or Suffern with Mahopac so the final on monday, will be amazing!!!

  19. spectator

IONA vs Step game was evenly matched. IONA got the win but they had to work for it. It could have gone either way. Congrats to IONA but don’t say now that it was easy because anyone that was at those games knows it wasn’t both teams have a lot of talent and they all wanted to win it just so happened that Cody got a breakaway and we all know that’s hard to stop. Good job by all the players on both teams. Good luck to all the seniors and to the rest of you we’ll see you next year.

  20. postman

    Section 1 final is monday..

  21. The Real Deal w/ Bill McNeil

The score was 9-1 at the end of the second. Mamaroneck put in their backup goalie (who is a sophomoree) for the whole 3rd period and then played their JV call-ups in the 3rd period. This is all fact, Connor did play a couple of shifts in the 3rd, I am guessing the coach just wanted to get the 100th goal out of the way so they can focus only on WP. IS that a great reason? well I guess that is debatable. But you don’t call an entire program names because of it. It just comes off as sour grapes and bitterness. The fact that ETB could not score on Mamk’s JV speaks volumes on how much of a mismatch this was. Now, when those underclass JV players get in, are they supposed to NOT play hard? Is their backup goalie supposed to let in goals so ETB could feel better? The only problem anyone could have is that Conner played in the 3rd… If that upsets you, and you want to focus on that because you got pounded 13-1…. then so be it. I really think some people are just upset to see their high powered offense stymied for 1 goal, when the real problem is that ETB does not play one ounce of defense, they just let their D and goaltenders fend for themselves. If the forwards came down to help out on D once in a while, the score would have been more respectable.

  22. OHHHH FUDGE

I guess connor and Mamaroneck know how to flip the bird in more ways then one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. Biff

As I said last night, I am a Suffern fan and you can’t blame Mamo if their 5th and 6th lines are scoring goals and ETB can’t score against 5th line players and a backup goalie. It is more insulting to play keep away and the 5th and 6th lines are entitled to play their best, and show the coach what they can do in a game.

  24. Chaps and Conors okay

Lets see, kid like Connors works hard for four years, comes to practice (does not put travel hockey or anything else a head of his team and school) and you are going to fault a coach for trying to get him an extra point to cap a great high school career just because the opponent couldnt keep up. They played the JV! Isnt it better for the young guys to play with the Conors and get the experience. It wasnt like Conors was out there with top guys flanking him. To the victor goes the spoils. Its tough to tell a JV kid playing in a playoff game or any game for that matter with fans to “hold back”..lol. Not Chaps fault. ETB may have needed the reality check anyway.

  25. hmmm

    harold any new rakings?

contemplating a couple of d2 games before i make my predictions for tomm

  26. fitchett

good game pac! do it for yourself! lets go boys!

  27. in the stands

Mamo played all 25 players, went 6 lines from middle of 2nd period, ETB’s third line didn’t play till the last 2 minutes

  28. postman

BIFF, i posted something similiar to this a few topics back but i will write it again. I am getting tired of you always taking the middle of the road, mediator stance. Take a side and have some fun with it. I am giving you a new nickname and MRS. BIFF would probably agree with this one.. it is
    Mr. SUMMERUPPER.

  29. go to the tape

Good job Iona! Cody and Rob…congratulations again from your Suffern friends!

  30. LoHud Hockey

postamn, I love that you are on the blog today. Goes to show, whether rain, nor sleet, nor hail, nor snow…

  31. postman

LOL.. yes i have been a little busy lately and haven’t been around, but its nice to be back today. Did you go to one of the games last night?

  32. postman

LoHud, here is my response from a few topics back, as you can see I am catching up..

BArry O was or maybe still is a ventrilaquist and magicianthat used to perform at schools..
ok i have to be honest, i didn’t really know that, but that is the power of the internet, anything you want to know is just a few clicks away..

    http://www.barryo.ca/

  33. Section 1 Follower

In one of the previous blogs, someone commented about Suffern’s thrid and fourth lines dumping the puck and playing defense. Their first and second lines do this all night which is not a bad thing at all. The first lines are more proactive at getting the puck, but when they know they don’t have any options coming into the zone, they just send it in and don’t mind playing defense at all. This makes Suffern a very dangerous team.

  34. Mamk vs WP

    predictions for Mamk-WP?

  35. LoHud Hockey

OK, I guess that is one Barry O, but not the one I was thinking of. He was a terrible professional wrestler back in the 80’s whose sole job was to get pummelled on the WWF Saturday & Sunday morning shows. His “gimmick” was that when they announced his name, when they said O, he would make a big O with his hands over his head (a la if there was an O in YMCA). I didn’t suggest him as the Ossining mascot because he got beat up on, but more because his name was Barry O, and any WWF fan from the 80’s should remember him.

As for the games, no, I couldn’t make it last night. I went to AC for the night on Wednesday and got back too late to head over to SOR. I figured I would throw my money away down there instead of buying 50/50 raffle tickets. But hey, if you are still trying to figure out who I am, the fact that I wasn’t there last night, may let you know. If you really pay attention during the Suffern games (before, during, and after), you will notice one person who is always there, wasn’t there.

  36. Champs! AGAIN!

    spectator,

No way! Iona dominated all three games and the Iona Coach out coached Stepinac’s coach. Stepinac was lucky to win game two.

Iona’s forwards, defense and goalie were defeinitely stronger than Stepinac’s. Iona’s first line DOMINATED, Everytime they were on the ice. Stepinac’s number one line Disappeared.

Iona deserved to win. The scores were close, but Iona Dominated. Getting outshot 128 to 84 in three games, shows how much Iona dominated. Reagan did an OK job, but Iona had too many “HORSES”, that Stepinac couldn’t keep up with.

  37. mamk

any predictions for mamk vs Wp and suffern vs mahopac? ...i really wanna see mamk vs suffern and if jackson can make the difference…hope to see a good final bc no matter what it wud be a terrible championship game watching mamk vs mahopac or suffern vs WP bc we know who will win since either team( not suffern or mamk) wud get blown out.

  38. Put Your Glasses Back ON!

    spectator,

There’s no way Stepinac has the hockey talent that Iona has. Stonger 1st,2nd and third lines and 4 strong defensemen.

Who on Stepinac can match up to King, Cambria and Molinaro? And what Defensemen do you have that can come close to McCabe? Will give Stepinac the slight advantage in Goal tending (Reagan 2.4 ga avg vs DiMario 2.7). But overall Iona is definitely more talented!

  39. postman

I was actually a huge wrestling fan back in the 80’s and totally forgot about him. I used to go to the garden every month, that is when wrestling was great!! “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka off the top of Andre “the giant” shoulders was priceless. But I have to say that the “magnificent Muracco” is still one of my favorites. I am still stumped on who you are Lohud!!???? Do you hang out and talk to the suffern parents?

  40. I can see clearly now..

Just a “slight advantage” in goaltending?

  41. Get Real

All I was hearing is that Stepinac has Reagan and he’s going to shut down Iona. Well I went to the games and as far as I’m concern, McCabe,King,Molinaro,Cambria and DiMario shut down Stepinac. End of Story!!!!!

  42. LoHud Hockey

Most of the time I do hang out in the lobby after the games, at least for a little bit. Not necessarily talking to the parents, but sometimes I am (usually if the people I am talking to are also talking to the Suffern parents). That wouldn’t be where you are seeing me for the most part, though.

Come on postman, I’m lobbing you meatballs here, you should be devouring them. And if you are who I think you are, I am guessing you are no stranger to devouring meatballs.

Since you’ve been trying to figure out who I am, i have had at least a half-dozen people figure it out and mention it to me at Suffern games. I’m rooting for you!!!

  43. I can see clearly now..

Get real…you can’t have it both ways. Iona fans are proclaiming the superiority of their forward lines and defense. That’s probably true, but with such talent, that makes it that much more difficult for the Step goalie…and easier for the Iona goalie.

  44. postman

Now that is not right, people know who you are and are not telling me. HUH, nice friends they are… and although i have put on a couple of pounds lately (pants are getting a little snug) a person to devour meatballs i am not. Unless i have this warped body image and I am bigger then i think, gotta go, i better get to the gym.

  45. Mamo

    Mamk 6 WP 2

  46. Biff

hey postman, does that mean you want to fight me again? You are always starting trouble. Now I know why. You are a frustrated professional wrestler wannabe. I have a lot of opinions on a lot of stuff, and some of them are not so nice. don’t tempt me. I might say some things that I will regret. and I’m real close to doing it. I am sure you know what some of those opinions are.

  47. postman

LOL…I understand where your coming from biff, and i applaud your self control!! And you wouldn’t want to fight me now that I am back in WWF mode, i have a hell of a figure 4 leg lock!!!

  48. D1 Semis Predictions

    Suffern 6, Mahopac 0
    Mamaroneck 5, White Plains 3

  49. ID-11

Becareful biff , now that postman has been placed in the heavy weight division you may want to watch yourself.

  50. Biff

really, really close to blurting something out. I can’t take it anymore.

  51. ID-11

Biff- just let it all out , It is theraputic and some controversy is always good for the blog .

  52. Get Real

    I can see clearly now..,

You’re absolutely right. Reagan had a tough three game series. He was tested all the time. And as you know, a goalie is only as good as his defensemen, and in this series iona’s defensemen were stronger!

  53. leagues

Any predictions on leagues next year,

Maybe its a just this one year, but it seems a lot of teams got scr!@#d for being in the league they were. South couldn’t get into the playoffs, and teams like Mt. Pleasant and S/I both had to win there last games to get in. Both of those teams have made this years playoffs worthwild already.

    Here is mine

    League 1

Suffern, Mamo, Pelham, Rye, Mahopac (Very young this year, no need to move down), John Jay, RTH

    League 2

    N. Rockland, N. Rochelle, Clarkstown N., White Plains (this was the year go up, too late now), Mt. Pleasant, Brewster, Fox Lane, Scarsdale, Yorktown, ETB

    League 3

Pawling, Clarkstown S., Ossining, Byrham Hills (I saw their modified = not bad), Somers/N. Salem (Marasco’s back), S/I (Halpin’s back), Pearl River (another young team this year)

    League 4

JFK, Greely, Lakeland Panas, Carmel, Nyack, TZ

Any comments, did I miss anyone? Even with my new leagues it seems league 2 and 3 are identical, we need help

  54. predictions

  55. postman

HEY!! like i wrote, i know i have put on a few pounds but what’s with the heavyweight classification, ID-11.. ??? That’s just not right…Now I have to go purge the chix parm hero i had for lunch.

  56. Hockeyman

Is bypolar an ETB fan or a Mam fan? Could be a parent of a Mam player who hasn’t seen his child touch the ice all year and finally saw an opportunity for his kid to play but didn’t. Same goes for ETB. When do you realize that you are not going to win and let kids that have shown up to every practice and rode the bench all year play. Couldn’t understand why for most of the third period even when 11 and then 12-1 that the first lines were even on the ice. They obviously weren’t doing the job and the third and 4th line O and D couldn’t do any worse. Winning comes from depth. The coach from White Plains said it best in an article about a month ago. He said he has a strong team because he has depth. The depth comes from every kid on his bench getting “at least one meaningful shift a game”. If you don’t want a kid to play….ever, than cut him. Otherwise put him in and let him develope.

  57. DEVELOP?

You do not develop as a player in a sectional playoff game. You develop by working and getting better and competing for a job and then defending that job against other players. Mamaroneck not only dumped their varsity bench, they dumped their JV bench. Those kids are not going to just back down, they want to impress the coach too. When you enter the sectionals you are on the line, and it could get ugly as it did for Etb last night. Thats the risk you take coming into the sectionals. I doubt any etb player was damaged pyschologically by last nights loss, they will survive and maybe see what it is to play a team at that level. eague 1 teams no going into the season that Suffern and Mamaroneck are on the schedule twice and they know if they do not come ready to play that it can become ugly. Thats the risk they accept, I guess etb is not ready to assume those types of risks yet

  58. penalty box

guess the mamo/etb score was a wake-up call…yes some grumblings about the score and even some shots at the better etb kids not scoring on the mamos jvs but lets remember how far the etb team has come…could the same beating come for scarsdale???...who knows…the real deal mentioned a very good point in that the forwards left the defense out to dry (playing high on the points)...the coach should of maybe changed his stategy and pulled his forwards down deeper into the defensive zone…seemed they were focusing on hagan…of course the mamo team is much deeper and faced a much weaker goaltender vrs. last year where it was a closer game…the more skilled players were out for etb every other shift so its quite understandable that they ran out of gas or just packed it in after looking up at the score…put those so called jvs up against those kids in the first period and we have a different scenario…wish brian connor his teamates all the best…no BONES about it

  59. Suffern

From a non suffern parent good luck your team deserves to win states this year. To go undefeated playing the competition you did is something to be proud of.
credit has to start with coach Schilling, I for one have always enjoyed watching Suffern play because they are so disciplined and opportunistic in their approach.

  63. ITS OVER

Here is one for that over prices locker room of yours Suffern, With all of your talk about going and winning states you are going to be suprised when your “DREAM” season comes to an end on monday night. Keep thinking about section 10, and Mamaroneck will be the ones playing them next week. I hope tissuue boxes came with that locker room, you are going to need them. Don’t think you can beat Mamaroncek 3 times in a row.

  64. ITS OVER? NOTHING IS OVER TIL WE DECIDE IT IS

WHEN THE GERMANS BOMBED PEARL HARBOR, DID WE SURRENDER?

    NIEDERMEYER..>DEAD!

“Don’t think you can beat Mamaroncek 3 times in a row.”
ummm, suffern just beat mamaroneck 3 times in a row

    5-1, 5-3, 2-1

you know what, it probably wasnt the first time either…
and, has mamaroneck EVER beaten suffern three times in a row?

  65. postman

it’s too bad out meatball devouring friend doesn’t know how to use a computer, “the coach” would be pretty funny on here..ok here are my predictions..
    Suff 6 Mahopac 0
    Mamaroneck 6 WP 3

    Final
Suffern 4 Mamaroneck 2 (with a rare empty net goal)

  66. ITS OVER

“has mamaroneck EVER beaten suffern three times in a row?”

Nope, they haven’t, but all we need is one..and this will be the one!!! Just keep checking on Potsdam and Massena, we will see you monday!!!

  67. Easy Does it

Iona-Stepinac great series with evenly matched teams.

Games 2 and 3 decided in OT. No team owned the other. Two evenly matched teams. Game decided when the best player on the ice beat the best goalie on the ice.

ETB vs. Mamaroneck: What do you realy expect? Why have ETB even play a Section 1 team. That would be like the Iona playing a Varsity C team next. Still don’t understand it. Why not let the lower level teams just play each other for a championship. That way it would prevent hiding out in the lower levels and trying to sneak in.

  68. CRUSH

Why, “easy does it”, because it is fun to see these league 3 and 4 teams win a few games and start thinking they have a shot, THEN YOU CRUSH THEM!!!!!!!!!and they learn what happens when you play against the big boys.

  70. leagues

    To leagues next year,

I didn’t realize Alteri, and McCarrick are only juniors, you are correct, WP should be in league 1 next year.

I haven’t seen the C. North Goalie play, but if he is half as good as everyone says he is, than they can’t move down passed league 2.

And you didn’t place, Fox Lane, and Sleepy Irvington, would like to get your thoughts on these 2.

  71. Biff

“Its Over” seems to have a little problem with grammar. “Here is one for that over prices locker room of yours Suffern”. What the hell does that mean? Suffern doesn’t overlook anyone in the playoffs. They just find a way to win. I understand why Mamo is frustrated. They have had an awesome season that has been overshadowed by Suffern’s undefeated season. and they plated Suffern tough and still lost. but tell the truth. if you had to bet the mortgage on this game, what would the bet be? Exactly. Suffern. at sporto.

  72. postman

this is just for argument sake, don’t know if I totally agree, i am thinking of the team as well: I agree that CN should not move below league 2 next year, for mcindoe’s sake alone. If they (and he)plays in league 3 next year they are really doing a disservice to mcindoe. He is a great goalie but we are going to run into the same problems we had this year with the point totals of some players playing in, and against lower league teams. I think he has a good shot of playing hockey in college (if he wants and takes the correct route, and I said shot, D3 shot) and putting him in league 3 would NOT help at all. Some might even say that staying in league 1 would be the best thing for him. i have written many times that this year was the best thing that could have happened to him. Look at Natoli and Reagan in the Jr. league, Reagon has better #’s, better team etc.. who played in the all-star game and actually made an impression on Jr. A and college scouts. It is very difficult to make an impression as a goalie playing for the best team.

  73. postman

you really need to stop being so empathetic and understanding BIFF..

  74. Biff

    make that “played”

  75. East Tuck Bville Mamaroneck

ITs maturity. I watched the game start to finish. The Eastchester players do not play defense. Not that they can`t, but they won`t. They need to mature and realize that against a forceful team like Mamaroneck you need to play awesome defense. I do think that Scarsdale if they played would have lost, but not by that score. Scarsdale is a seasoned team and would play defense against Mamaroneck and not allow that type of a blowout to occur. Hopefully Eastchester gets that, but its a heavy price to pay for that lesson.

  76. Harold Gutmann

I wasn’t going to talk about leagues until after the playoffs, but I realize not everyone will still be around then, so here’s something I wanted to throw around (this isn’t my original idea, but the coach might want to stay anonymous).
How about splitting the leagues by school size?
So using this year, an example might be

League 1-A: Suffern, Mamaroneck, Rye Town/Harrison, Mahopac, Clarkstown North, White Plains, Scarsdale
League 1-B: Pelham, Rye, John Jay, Yorktown, Brewster, Fox Lane, Pawling and Ossining?
League 2-A: Mount Pleasant, North Rockland, E/T/B, New Rochelle, SH/I, L/P, Clarkstown South
League 2-B: K/PV, S/NS, Pearl River, SH/I, Carmel, Nyack, Tappan Zee, Greeley

Obviously there can be a lot of crossovers, but smaller teams like Pelham and John Jay don’t have to face Suffern twice a year and can compete for league titles, all-league honors, etc.

  77. spectator

IONA did’t dominate or they would have done it in 2 games not 3 and 2 of them in overtime. You can say Step goalie kept them in thte games but the bottom line is it was 3 great games that 2 came down ot. IONA can say what they want now that its over but Stepinac could have just easily been saying the same bs today if they won. Both teams are great. Relax IONA I wasn’t saying anything bad about you I was just stating the facts. The fact is Stepinac is a great team made up of great players. A little different from IONA having just 1 great line. (IONAs opinion not mine) I still think the teams are equal maybe in different ways but overall equal.

  78. Travel Team

    Harold,

Carmel is a D1 team and would have to be in league 2-A.

I also think that CN should be 2-A. New Rochelle could be 1-A.

  79. leagues

    Not bad harold,

This seems to be what other sports do. We haven’t been able to do it in hockey over the years, because of the so called “non hockey towns”, but with all the new rinks now, and so many kids playing, this format will force teams to be held accountable for developing a feeder system. I like it.

  80. spectator

And by the way IONA can’t say anything about the coaches because weren’t they the ones who blamed any loss they had this year on their coach. You can’t have it both ways. Either the coach is good or not, not just when you win. Unless your on the team you have not right to make an opinion on either coach.

  81. CN next year

postman – i agree that moving CN down to League 3 won’t be good for McIndoe, but at the same time, you have to look at the whole team. CN’s offense is, well, there is NO offense! They couldn’t even score against South, and only scored one against Sleepy. Whatever offense they had this year (Zipkin & Williams) is graduating. I think they need to be in League 3. So McIndoe is definetely a League 1 player, as we all know, but the rest of the team are League 3 type players. And you have to think about the whole team, as opposed to one player.

  82. Hockeyman

Develope?, you missed the point. Coaches need to learn when it is Ok to let the bench play. Regular season or playoff. Everyone should have the opportunity to contribute if they are on the team.

  83. LoHud Hockey

I had posted this (or something like it) a while back, but here is my idea for the leagues (and hopefully some higher ups in the league and maybe some coaches and AD’s are reading this and will consider it).

You create 3 conferences based on team strength. Conference A is your best 10 schools, B is the 10 middle, and conference C is the bottom third. Within each conference, you have 2 leagues, also based on strength. This basically gives you 6 power-based leagues of 5 teams each. You play everyone in your league twice, and everyone in the other league within your conference once. This gives every team in the section 13 league games for the purposes of making the playoffs & seeding. If we do this, I would go with the following:

League A1: Suffern, Mamaroneck, Rye, Pelham, RTH

League A2: WP, JJ, Mahopac, Yorktown, Scarsdale

League B1: North Rockland, ETB, CN, Mt. Pleasant, New Rochelle

League B2: Fox Lane, Brewster, CS, Pawling, Ossining

    League C1: K/PV, S/NS, SH/I, L/P, PR

League C2: Greeley, Byram Hills, Carmel, TZ, Nyack

So for example, Suffern’s league schedule would be a home & home with each of Mamak, Rye, Pelham, & RTH and one game each against WP, JJ, Mahopac, Yorkton, & Scarsdale. After each season, the winner of each league moves up one league and the loser of each moves down one. That way you don’t have the issue of teams “hiding in lower leagues to boost their record” or “staying in a higher one to boost their playoff seeding” as has been thrown around in this blog all year. They would have no choice where they are from one year to the next.

Since all teams have 13 games, you don’t need to worry about calculating percentages to figure out who makes the playoffs. You set a number of wins for each league, and if they hit that mark, they are in.

If there is anyone reading this who is on whatever commitee decides the league structures, this will work, I dare you to poke holes in it. I won’t even ask for credit, feel free to bring it up at the end of year meeting and claim the idea as your own. Just put it into play and all will be good.

  84. Harold Gutmann

    Travel team,
Right about Carmel. WIth Clarkstown North, I was trying to show how the leagues would have looked this year, and in the preseason Clarkstown North was placed in the top league, and New Rochelle in the bottom league. Obviously in hindsight some teams should have switched leagues.

  85. fatherof hockeyplayers

Mamaroneck beats ETB – that was the expected result. Division 1 versus Division 3. As a fan and a parent, my only concern is when a team is dominating the game in such a fashion as Mamaroneck did, why is it necessary to score a goal with less than a minute to go in a game. The clock was running. Does that build character for the mamaroneck team?

I notice Suffern the most dominate team in the state this year never beats a team by more than 7 goals. I guess the Suffern program understands the thorough nature of character building and sportsmanship. They beat you on the ice in every which way so there is no reason to trash you with scoring at will. Look at the pelham program the coach always has them play as a team and they are alway on top. How often do they beat a team by 12 goals.

Did any of you sports fan complain when Bill Belichick and his patriots were beating teams by 5 or 6 touchdowns? I imagine most new yorkers thought very badly of him due to their ultimate arrogance. Clearly when our Giants upset them everyone was so excited to beat the patriots that even NYC gave the NJ team a parade.

Everyone should remember these are still children and young adults playing. The better teams always rise to the top. Being the better team means you have talent, skill and class.

  86. League alignment

Does anyone know when the section meets to discuss next years league structure and who attends the meeting? (ie: AD’s, coaches etc.). LoHud hockey your league structure seems to make sense, we can discuss which teams should be placed where but the concept is good.
I know in travel soccer leagues they will drop the bottom 2 down 1 league and move up the top 2 teams one league and this seems to work well. Any additional movements would need to be extenuating circumstances. If this concept was utilized CN and Mahopac would have to move to league 2 and White Plains and the 2nd place team of league 2 would have to move up to league 1.

  87. Travel Team

Do not be so sensitive ETB.

For better or worse there were lots of examples of similar scores during the section 1 season. I did not hear the complaining when Suffern beat NRockland 10-3 during the regular season.

It’s hockey that is usally the result of, regretfully, lack of team defense and and goaltending. Under those circumstance I’ve seen lots of goals scored in quite a hurry. 3rd and 4th liners are also very eager to score when they do not play a lot.

Any overt taunting or “celebrating” involved would speak more to the lack of sportsmenship aspect of this.

I think anyone who has played hockey has been on both ends of these type games. You take it and move on.

  88. Section 1 Follower

Are these league formats really in the discussion for the spring meetings??? I like both aspects and if I am not mistaken is used in one of the varsity sports in the area.

  89. to father of hockeyplayers

Eastchester, If you cannot swim stay out of the deep water.

  90. geez

Trust me Bronxville dad (ETB) your kid will get over it. Stop trying to come to juniors defense on a blog… let him grow up and be a man. These things happen in life. If the fact that Mamaroneck blew out your teams hockey team by 12 goals is the worst thing that happened to him in his life… he has led a charmed and probably sheltered life. You are protecting him from nobody. Fine whatever, we all know Mamaroneck destroyed your sons hockey team… nobody cares anymore except you. Move on already… nobody cares if you think mamk coach has class or not. Who are you to pass judgement?
Here is a novel idea. Why don’t you just go to your sons hockey games, sit back and enjoy them, instead of getting involved and getting upset every time juniors team gets pounded. The purpose of high school sports is for young men to grow up. Quite frankly I am tired of the whiners who are upset at the outcome of the game. We know you thought you could play with Mamaroneck and give them a good game… quite possibly beat them. But you were in a situation you knew nothing about, you had no idea how good Mamaroneck was. You figured Suffern is the awesome team, Mamaroneck can’t be that good. I am sure your kid is over it, he is probably outside with his buddies in the snow, while you sit in front of your computer and stew over it. The score was embarrasing, but the game was not. ETB had 34 shots on net, that is more than most teams get off Mamaroneck, so take that as a positive and move on.

  91. Really..Kool-Aid Time

    Hey Spectator,

Stop Drinking that Kool-aid. Iona definitely dominated Stepinac in this three game series. Stepinac got LUCKY in game #2. Iona has a super first line but their second line was equal to Stepinac’s number 1 line. Stepinac’s lead scorer was “SHUT DOWN”, NADA, Nothing! Only player on Stepinac that di any damage was Miano, the rest of the team skated scared and disappeared.

Teams were not close at all. Without Reagan, Stepinac was a below parr team. With Reagna, they were competitive because of him.

  92. Crusader Fan

    spectator,

Stepinac was definitely out coached…End of Story!

  93. spectator

    Hey Kool-Aid-

So IONA would be nothing without Cody and if they had such good 2nd and 3rd line players why didn’t they play. I still say they were evenly matched or it wouldn’t have been 3 games 2 of which ended in OT, and could have ended any way, Cody just got the breakaway first. I am not taking anything away from him he deserved it. But it wasn’t an easy win for them. Just as I suspect it wasn’t an easy loss for Stepinac.

    Crusader Fan

Going against the coach becuase you lost makes you look like a sore loser. The game was lost, it was great for IONA and terrible for Stepinac, but bottom line it was the players out there not the coaches. You can’t only be behind the coach when your winning.

  94. Crusader Fan

    Hey spectator,

Just keep quiet. We got out played… Our lines were not clicking. ANd much of the time we were over-matched.

Maybe next year? End of Story!

  96. IonaPower

    Lohud Hockey,

I had the exact same idea for league setups next season (albeit different teams)...I even mentioned it to a few coaches. How did you come up with it?

  100. postman

    good question “question for lohud”

  101. FLYERS

The Iona Stepinac series was a classic. Three great games that could have went either way. Game two & three both went to OT & both teams had there chances. Game three both teams played trying not to make mistakes or take penalties. It was going to be a heartbreaking loss for who ever came up on short end Thursday night. I saw all three games & I thought Iona skaters were beter than stepinac’s. Reagan in game two & three was the equalizer. Stepinac had lead with 4 minutes to go when a def lost puck at own blue line to one of Iona players. At that point Step had had the lead for about 10 minutes & looked to be in control. Iona took puck down ice to tie score. Stepinac again had the puck in its own zone & lost it to King who made a great move for the win. I thought coaches for both teams had there teams in position to win & should be commended for a great HS Hockey series. People should try to be more positive. The game was played on the ice & both teams made everyone proud with there play & emotion.

CONGRATS TO IONA AND SUFFERN ON WINNING (suffern will win)

  104. LoHud Hockey

    postman & question for LoHud-

I am not a Suffern parent, player, or coach. I am an alumnus, though. postman also ruled out in previous posts The guy who makes the decisions on who will be playing for the the Saints junior team, the coaching staff of th St. Joes varsity team, and the guy who stole Tom Brady’s boot and made the Patriots lose. I am at most if not all of the Suffern home games every year, and if you guys really can’t figure it out, I guess I don’t stand out as much as I thought at the games.

  105. LoHud Hockey

    radar-

That’s how NJ does it (winner moves up, loser moves down). As for the leagues, smaller leagues is always better. It makes it more competitive. If you have 8 teams in league 1, there will always be awhipping boy or two at the bottom. If you have a league of Suffern, Mamk, Rye, Pelham, & RTH, anyone can win on any night.

  110. LoHud Hockey

I have been to the Section 1 end of year dinner, but not in a few years. I also have been to Suffern’s end of year dinner, but that was MANY MANY years ago.

  111. LoHud Hockey

I have also been to the Suffern Golf Outing (as recently as last year) if that is your next question.

  112. to LoHud Hockey

Do you have a private office at sporto where you blog?

  113. postman

Mrs. Till, get the list of who was at the golf outing.. we are getting close. YOu know when we find out we are going to kick ourselves for not getting it sooner. it is someone obvious…

  114. LoHud Hockey

I do not have an office at SOR. If I am on the blog from there, I use my blackberry (which is terrible, by the way, because it takes forever to scroll through the comments on it).

I have given you too many clues and you guys are getting closer (to answer your previous question, by the way, I am not Mrs. H), so I am not going to give any more hints. It’ll be fun to watch all the inquiring Suffern dad’s faces looking around the rink tonight trying to figure out who I am. I’ll be there a little early tonight, so if you figure it out before then, please stop by and say hi.

  115. to LoHud Hockey

Did you ever play for Suffern Hockey

  116. LoHud Hockey

As I said in my previous post, no more hints.

  117. Narrowed down

I think we are really close. All we need to do is get the hotel registers from all the hotels in AC this past Thursday, and we got it. Why didn’t we think of that before.

  118. Biff

I will have Mrs. Biff pull out the golf outing participants from last year.

  119. Biff

Okay. Mrs. Biff has identified a suspect. We have a question for LoHud. Did you come to Utica last year to watch Suffern play Ithaca?

  120. LoHud Hockey

Tell Mrs. Biff to go back to the drawing board. I was not able to make it to Utica for the semis last year. I was getting updates on the Ithaca game and was all set to drive up on Sunday for the championship game had they beat Ithaca. I plan on going this year for the whole weekend, though, assuming they make it to Utica.

  121. to LoHud Hockey

are you eating a bowl of soup right now as you blog?

  122. ALOT BETTER!

    Spectator and FLyers

I don’t know what you were watching, but on the tying goal, Step’s defensemen NEVER had the Puck. Molinaro had the Puck behind the net, gave it to Cambria, who centered the puck between two Step players to King, who burried the tying goal on a ONE TIMER!

The winning goal came because of Cambria’s effort. If you view the tape, it was CAmbria’s pressure that setup the winnng goal. He pressured the defensemen. And After that IT WAS HISTORY!

No one is being negative, just stating the facts that Iona was ALOT BETTER! :)

  123. interference

HOLD THE PHONES….IONA PREPS #12 MIKE CAMBRIA CLEARLY SETS A PICK ON STEPINACS #3 TO ALLOW KING TO WALK IN AND SCORE THE GAME WINNER…POOR OFFICIALS ON THE GAME..NOT SAYING IONA WOULD NOT HAVE WON BUT O BOY THAT WAS INTEFERENCE CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHY THESE 2 OFFICIALS ARE ON GAME 3 OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP??

  124. flyers

I am refering to the stepinac def had puck in Iona zone at Blue line. Instead of dumping it . He lost it to create the rush up ice. Iona did have puck behind net & you could tell taht they would score on that chance. Yes cambris did hustle it out to King for tying goal. But with 4 minutes to go the Step defense should have dumped the puck behind the iona goal. That point was the turning point in game . Up until that sequence of playes Stepinac had had lead & the better of play for about 9:00 minutes. Congratulations to Iona on Championship. But lets stop being so negative.
Iona did deserve win & if Stepinac would have won it would have been the play of Reagan in net game two & three[ I did not say game 1?] & the play of Rocco Miano. Rocco had a few very good chances at end of third & in OT. We could have easily talked about how he won game for Crusaders. Iona’s goalie played very well in game 3 aftera shaky 3rd period in game 2. But again Congrats & good luck against Buffalo.

  125. crowd point of view

if you watch the video, you can clearly see cambria fighting for the puck with the stepinac defenseman. they both went at it and by the time any of them knew where the puck was, king was already on the breakaway. and if you think game three had poor refs, you must have not seen game 2, or the offside for that matter. don’t try to blame the loss on the refs because they were fair towards both teams and let a few go for each side. i am just surprised the net did not mysteriously come off for this goal…thank God the peg did not break this time
anyway, i hope i am not creating a disturbance and it was definately a good 3-game series to watch

  126. Interference,

    interference

  127. god awful

deffinately a poor choice of officials for the chshl finals the better officials did not get the call for whatever reason we had guys that could not keep up with the play and offsides we constantly missed…i guess we really missed the top guys

  128. Get Real

    interference,

crowd point of view is 100% CORRECT!

If you want to talk about calls that weren’t called in three games and the semi’s against Farrell, let’s talk about how the Stepinac Goalie kept kicking off the net and not getting Penalized. And the Stepinac parents were laughing because they knew that they got away with something AGAIN!. It was disgusting to watch! He did it 8 times in game one alone! And eventually the Ref called a Penalty on him. Which eventually cost Stepinac because Iona scored a POWER PLAY GOAL! He was kicking off the net even when the puck wasn’t around him.

And you probably thought it was funny! He’s been doing it for years and it just proves that in the end it will cost you!

Remember, If it wasn’t for the bad “NON” off-sides call in game 2, the series would of been over then. But the refs screwed up. EVERYONE at the Ice Hutch saw the offsides, except for the Refs, How Convenient!!!!

But keep making up excuses. They’re very Laughable!

  129. Frustrated Parent

    Hey Interference,

Sounds like you’re a little Frustrated. You should go and see a shink! It’s very clear that you only see the game one way. You probably yell at every game that the Refs hate your team and never call a fair game. Does that sound familiar? Guess your son was on past teams and never won anything! So now you continue to make excuses why Stepinac can’t win.

  130. Refs

Who were the refs? My guess is not “Stepinac’s” Greaney?

  131. Iona Parent

It’s Over….Iona won! So let’s just end this now!

  132. RTH Fan

RTH has to move down at least one league. 58 of their 89 goals where by seniors who are now leaving. Another 18 is by a junior who is most likely going to prep school, leaving 13 goals by returning players. The coaches barely played some of the sophmores or freshman (even in 6-0 games) so they have little to no playing experience at this level. The backup goalie had very very little playing time so that the starter could rack up saves and minutes, leaving the backup with little experience as well.

In contrary, the last game is where they played some of the Blind Brook playes who should have sat a little more. 77 who hasn’t a goal or assist was out there for goals 1, 2, and 4 againtst RTH, and played more time in this critical game than in any other game so far this season – as well as 11 out there a lot more than he should have been. On defense, 2 got skated by like a pilon when RTH was scored on several time, raising his stick in the air in frustration instead of working harder to prevent it in the future, but he was out there every other shift.

The coaches had the first line out there way too much during the season, and the strong second line an awful lot – why did they change in the most important game of all?

What junior from RTH is most likely going to prep school?

  134. RTH News Flash

RTH coaches leave over the summer. No way anyone would stay and coach the 3rd liners left if Urban leaves like he should for Prep School.

This team will have to drop as low as it can next season. Let the remaining kids play at a level they can succeed at. If there is such a thing.

Rth will be bad next year, but not as bad as everyone thinks. There are still a few decent players left who were not given the chance to step up this year, but will have to next season.

TERRIBLE COACHING BY STEPINAC PERSONALLY I BELIEVE STEPINAC HAD THE GAME WON BUT IONA JUST OUT COACHED STEPINAC. STEPINAC HAD A FEW GOOD LINES THEY COULD HAVE RAN BUT THE COACH CHOSE TO PLAY IONA’S GAME BY JUST PLAYING 1 LINE THE DATINO,MIANO,COUGLIN LINE JUST PLAYED AWFUL EXCEPT FOR MIANO WHO HAD A GREAT GAME.

I played all year for that coach and he did nothing but push us to do our best. For the first time I felt like I was on a team with a goal. We lost a game that we played pretty good in. It had nothing to do with being somebodies fault.

I played all year for that coach. He did nothing but push us to do the best we could. I learned to play with a team and had a goal. It wasn’t somebodies fault. We lost the game. No excuses.

    Hey chshl fan,

Real nice. Game is over! Both teams played well and Iona made the play. The same could be said about game #2. Same scenario, same situation, different result.

You sound like an ex-Stepinac father who did nothing but complain for two years, seems like things never change.

We will be fine and are happy with the coach. We all played our spot on the team. It was a difference from the past and it don’t seem like you can handle the way things changed. END of Story
