That was the chant at Sport-O-Rama last night after the Division I sectional final. Even those Mamaroneck fans would be hard-pressed to come up with a better script—down 1-0 after four minutes to the three-time defending (and 27-time overall) sectional champ, a team that hasn’t lost in 45 games, which includes three against the Tigers. Get the tying goal in the third period. Kill off a penalty in the final two minutes. And against hands-down the best defensive team in the section, get an odd-man rush in the final seconds featuring Brett Jackson, the X-factor who hasn’t been able to play against the Mounties all year, and Conner, one of the school’s all-time greats. Jackson faked the cross once and then poked it over to Conner, who put a first-class move on a first-class goalie. If you want a short version, here’s the story
I mentioned that Conner had missed two breakaways against White Plains (his two goals that night came on rebounds). I didn’t have room to mention that Conner tried so many moves on those chances that he didn’t get clean shots, and Tigers coach Art Bruno, coach Mike Chiapparelli’s assistant for all 302 wins, worked with Conner to use longer strokes on his next breakaway.
Later in the week I hope to take a few steps back and write about some deeper issues. For now, I’m jotting more of a play-by-play, and hopefully some of the 900+ people that were there can add to this. Just know that this is the kind of game it was: I brought a turkey sandwich with me for dinner, and I didn’t even remember about it until I was driving out of the parking lot at 11:15. It was only then that the adrenaline rush starting wearing off and I realized I hadn’t eaten anything since lunch. And it was the kind of ending that had coaches calling my cell phone and e-mailing me to see if it was real, while Suffern people starting cancelling hotel reservations in Utica.
Before the game: The game was delayed because of a really unfortunate incident in the previous game between two N.J. schools, Northern Highland and Montgomery, when a Montgomery player needed to be taken off the ice on a stretcher. Does anyone have an update on that? Not much to say, other than I hope he’s okay, and with the stands already pretty full with Suffern and Mamaroneck supporters, it was sort of a bizarre scene. Also, I got hit by a puck in the neck during warmups (I guess Mamaroneck didn’t appreciate my prediction), so if anything below is wrong, it’s because of a mild concussion. Suffern fans also started waving blue towels (a la Steelers fans), which looked really cool when the Mounties scored, but had an unfortunate consequence later.
First period: Jackson had the best opportunity early, but his odd-man rush two minutes in was thrwarted by a great pokecheck from Kevin Norwin. Soon Suffern second-line center Johnny Hill, who I thought was incredible last night, drew the game’s first penalty, a slash on defenseman Sean Hagan. Incidentally, I don’t think its a coincidence that Suffern’s only goal came with Hagan in the box—that’s how highly I think of the future St. John’s pitcher. Anyway, in a similar scenario to Game 1 in December, Suffern’s power play strikes quickly. Zac Hiller around the boards to Zach Salt behind the goal, to Matt Ruthberg in front of the net for a one-timer. 1-0 Suffern 3:55 into the game. For the next 10 minutes, I thought Suffern controlled the play, using all three forward lines effectively. Salt had a 1-on-1 chance, but Matt Seid expertly took the body and didn’t allow a shot with 6:56 left. Sixteen seconds later, Luke Glaser stops a Brian Hawley deflection off a Mike Conklin slap shot, and then stopped Hawley again on the rebound. WIth 4:12 left, Hiller was stopped on a 2-on-1 off a pass from Salt, and then with 1:35 left Glaser saved another Conklin slapper and the rebound by Hill. Finally, with 43 seconds left, Mamaroneck gets a good chance when freshman Robby Gardiner drove between the faceoff circles. Though Natoli made the save, Suffern defenseman Andrew Ojeda was called for unsportsmanlike conduct (I later heard it was taunting) during the stoppage of play, giving the Tigers their first power play of the game. Shots: 10-7 Suffern. Score: 1-0 Suffern.
First period intermission: This is when the capacity crowd of 900 paying spectators is reached. At this point, it’s probably 8:45. I understand some people were upset that they couldn’t get in, but it’s not like they were turned away at 7:30.
Second period: Suffern kills the power play—the Tigers best chance was Hagan’s wrister parallel to the faceoff dot. But Ruthberg tripped Jackson 1:09 into the period, giving Mamaroneck another shot. This time Conner had an opening skating in from the red line to the left of the goal, but Natoli moved his pads in the way quickly. The Tigers get a third straight power play when Ojeda is called for holding Robert Fine, but again nothing doing as the Mounties do a great job clogging the shooting lanes and Natoli doesn’t give up any rebounds—he either holds it, or pushes the puck over the boards. Hill draws an interference call on Adam Zweig with 5:24 left to give Suffern its first power play since the goal, but this time it’s Mamaroneck who has the best opportunity—Conner won the faceoff cleanly in the Suffern zone and Matt Seid got off a great slap shot. Interestingly enough, Chiapparelli said afterwards that his team played a more defensive style than the first two games and were careful to eliminate odd-man rushes. Well, the play that preceded the penalty was the only time I can remember that the Tigers defense was overly ambitious and got caught pinching, and the result was the penalty because they were chasing Suffern back. This time Suffern couldn’t convert, though they did get another power play with 22 seconds left after Christian Glaser was called for interference as he was heading back to the bench for a line change. I was writing something down and didn’t see it, but Chap was as livid as I’d ever seen him. Certainly the edge in penalties helped, but Mamaroneck had outshot Suffern 13-2 until the final minutes of the period. That reminded me of Game 2, when Mamaroneck had the edge in shots (and probably possession) but with Suffern’s defensive style, it didn’t get any great chances, and Suffern was the team that capitalized. I was definitely seeing another game where the opponent thought they could play with the Mounties, had their chances, and just couldn’t beat Natoli, or the stellar Suffern defense, and just thinking what might have been. Shots 13-5 Mamaroneck (game: 20-15). Score: 1-0 Suffern.
Second period intermission: Because of the delayed start, I had to start writing my story for the early editions during the third period, so I wasn’t able to pay close attention to everything. But here it goes.
Third period: Suffern’s Greg McCarron gets called for cross-checking 1:30 in after Glaser gets out of the box and misses a one-timer. I thought Mamaroneck was going to tie it with 11:30 left—after Sean Hagan’s slap shot, the rebound was directed toward Jackson in the crease, but he couldn’t quite control the puck and knock it in. One minute later, it’s tied, and its one of those moments that make the playoffs so fascinating, because no one would have predicted this. Everyone knew that someone besides Conner was going to have to beat Natoli for Mamaroneck to win. Likely candidates included Jackson, Glaser, Fine and Hagan. But it turned out to be junior Matt Marr, one of those non-stop hustlers and grinders, a second-line forward with five goals on the season. I think in the story I wrote he knocked down an Adam Zweig slap shot from the point. I think it was more like he was actively engaged with a Suffern defender, and he was hit by the shot. In any case, he turns around and somehow shoots the puck past Natoli. I was on the opposite end, but a spectator I trust who was near the play said the puck changed course and it had to have been deflected. Regardless, it went in. Now, the next three minutes are the most inspired and dominant play I’ve seen from Suffern since the first period. With 9:04 left, Glaser makes the save of the game, a pad save on a Salt deflection. Marr helped ease the pressure somewhat when he drew a high-stick on Ruthberg with 7:57 left, but as soon as that power play expired, Zweig was sent off for cross-checking with 6:20 left. Again Suffern’s power-play unit is stopped, but with 4:40 remaining comes one of the two calls that will surely be talked about at Sutters for a long time. This time I did have the right angle. The puck is between Glaser’s pads (but apparently still loose) when the referee’s whistle blows, and a split-second later Hiller comes in from the side to knock the puck in. The whistle clearly blew first, and I had lost sight of the puck, though I was overhead and didn’t have an on-ice view. Mamaroneck finally counters with about 3 1/2 minutes to go, but after a dump in takes a strange carom off the boards directly to Fine, Natoli stopped Fine’s shot from inside the circle, a deflection and a Conner slap shot all in less than 10 seconds. With 2:11 left, Fine gets called for interference, and after 39 scoreless minutes for the Mounties I really thought that might be it. But a deflection by Hiller goes just wide and the Tigers get through it, and soon after Fine is released, the biggest play of the season unfolds. Depending on what side your on, this was either a penalty or good non-call in the final seconds, but Hill was pushed down in front of the Tigers goal, and in the meantime a Suffern defenseman charged in to get the puck. Well the puck gets out to Jackson, who steams down the right side, gets it to Conner, and the rest is history. Well, not quite—what looks like the entire Mamaroneck team runs out to hug Conner, even though there’s 15 seconds left. Now, I didn’t get to talk to the refs after the game, so I’m getting this second-hand (though from a trusted source). I heard the refs were prepared to call a bench minor on the Tigers, except—while Mamaroneck is celebrating, some Suffern fans (looked like it came from the students section) starting throwing a few things on the ice. I saw one water bottle and a few of those blue towels. Perhaps the refs thought that cancelled out what was going on with Mamaroneck. In any case, nothing was called. When play is restarted, Suffern gets the puck toward Glaser and forces him to cover up, gaining a faceoff in the left circle with nine seconds left. But the faceoff is pushed to the side boards and the puck is eventually pushed past the blue line, giving the Tigers the championship 2-1. Shots 11-8 Mamaroneck in the period, 31-23 in the game. All of a sudden, sticks and gloves are flying in the air as the Tigers skate over to the opposite side of the ice to join their fans as the Suffern players collapse on the ice (and yes, a few more water bottles and towels get thrown from the Mounties student section, though security took control very quickly). It is really a stunning sight, one that I’m sure everyone there will remember, though for different reasons.
Post-game: After the post-game handshake—Hagan said the Suffern players were as classy as could be, and basically said to win states for them—the Tigers stay on the ice until the Zamboni driver, driving towards the center line, starts honking his horn. Conner talks about how he knew he wasn’t going to miss another breakaway, and championship games are when the best players need to take over (I’m reminded of Cody King winning the championship for Iona Prep in overtime), and how he hadn’t even been to a sectional final in four years until now. Goalie Luke Glaser said he dreamed of this moment, and it wasn’t as great as it was in real life. Hagan talked about the feeling of not only winning a title, but coming back against the top team in the state in their own building. And Marr said that while he doesn’t score much, he was ready when the time came.
I didn’t get a chance to talk to the Suffern players, mostly because they didn’t come out of the locker room until 10:45, almost an hour after the game ended and right up against my deadline. Maybe that’s an indication of how tough this loss was for them. When I left at 11:15, some players were still making their way out of the building, some for the final time as a Mountie. I did talk to Rob Schelling, who was gracious in defeat. I’m paraphrasing everything here: No excuses, no mention of the disallowed goal or the non-call at the end. Just how great both teams played, how when two great teams meet there can only be one winner. I asked if he thought the pressure of being top-ranked and undefeated got to his team, and he said no, that he recognized its easier to be the underdog but there was lots of pressure on both teams, since this was for the sectional title. And he concluded by saying how proud he was of his whole team, and especially his great group of seniors, who played so well for four years and contributed so much to the program and will truly be missed.
Well, it’s 3:00 and believe it or not, I have to (get to) do this all over again tonight, so I’m going to stop here. Hopefully this is enough to keep the discussion going at least. If you have more you’d like to add, or can offer a different perspective on something I mentioned, I’d love to hear it. I will also post a DII final preview around lunchtime today. By Wednesday I will also have some information on Mamaroneck’s state quarterfinal opponent Saturday, either Massena or Potsdam, who play tonight for the Section 10 title. Lastly, I have the IP addresses of all the people who posted incorrect scores last night and am seeing what my options are—for instance, whether I can block them from commenting on the blog again. There has never been blatant misinformation on here before (totally misguided, yes, but not outright lies) and I will do my best to see it never happens again.

The game between Mamaroneck and Section X will be a great battle. Section I had two of the best teams in the state. Mneck and Suffern are both quality teams. Someone had to lose. Just like two quality teams from Section X will play Tuesday and one will go home. Doesnt take away from what the other team has done. The state games will be awesome. Hope Massena can make it but it will be a battle.

If points were weighted based level of opponent, #21 would clearly be the leading scorer in Sec 1. Grades in AP courses are weighted…points in HS hockey should be as well!
But more to the point, too much is made of points when intangibles often leave a moderate scorer (who is nevertheless extremely valuable to the team) overlooked

Here is another one of those phrases that I just can't understand. How is supporting your community/school, your kids, and a game that you and your kids love to watch and play, a negative? Are we supposed to just pay no mind to what our children love to do? What exactly do you do that is so much better then watching your kids play a great game that they love. I would bet anything that i have a much more fulfilling life then you? And yes, my kids, hockey, and all the other things we/they enjoy are a big part of it. Also, when did anyone say that this blog means anything and what happens on the ice is secondary?? I think you need to get a life "get a life". You really don't get it!!

The difference between this and the last few seasons, is that, the 2006 and 2007 Section title matches were rubber matches between CN and Suffern, so when suffern won each year, they finished the year 2-1 against CN while Mamaroneck is 1-2 against suffern this season
Harold, Mamaroneck played a great game and deserved the win, so I don't want this to sound like sour grapes. I would never even have raised this issue had you not mentioned it in your recap. He certainly didn't fall down. You could say that it wasn't a penalty or that the ref didn't want to call a penalty at that stage, especially after he called a very weak penalty against Mamo with just over 2 minutes left. I think it was a make-up non-call. Ask Hagan whether he hit Hill or whether Hill just fell down. I was standing right there and he certainly got hit. Hard. And the defenseman was cutting in to receive a pass from Hill before the hit. That is why he was caught up ice. Anyway, Mamo deserved the win and I hope they win the state championship.
So, all that remain alive are Mamo, Iona, Rye and Pelham. Should be a great one tonite at the Hutch and then 3 super matches this Saturday "East of the River". Go downstate hockey.

I am a little confused with how they handle section 1 now. When I was in school at mamk we won our fifth straight section 1 title in 1999, but in your article today you say that this is only mamk's fith all time. Are you not counting the section titles they won playing in DII?

From this CN Fan and alumni, I want to send my best wishes out to the Suffern Seniors – Natoli, Salt, Ruthberg, Conklin, Ojeda, Shore & Hawley (hope im not forgetting anyone). You guys have been fun to watch the past few years battling out games (and CLASSIC games!) with my CN team, runs through the state playoffs, etc. You are a great group of individuals and hockey players who show true class in every way. Best of luck to you all in the future, and I hope you continue to play hockey wherever you go, because you are all great players. Suffern hockey will miss you guys, but the memories you'll have forever. Suffern hockey is over, but the next four years of your life won't be so bad either – college! Hold your heads up high! You'll be a key part of Suffern, and Section 1, hockey forever.

Congrats to Mamaroneck, and Congrats to Suffern. Most of all, Congrats to Section 1 for giving us all something to watch, enjoy, and most of all for those of us on here not named Harold Gutmann, an outlet to write about it.
Both teams were equal all season (even though Suffern was 2-0 against Mamk during the regular season), but Mamaroneck was the better team last night, and last night was the one that mattered the most.
As much as I would love to have seen Suffern bring home a second state championship so they can replace the one that is falling apart at SOR, I would love to see Mamaroneck bring it home as well. Chiaparelli and company deserve it after all the hard work they have put in all year (and in Chap's case the past couple of decades).
Lastly, I guess all the fun of the guessing games is over, postman & Biff. Since both of you will be returning Suffern dad's in 08-09, I guess we will have to resume it in the fall (although according to Rosto, you already figured it out).

The Channel 12 replay clearly showed that it was a 3 on 1….Jackson, Fine and Connor were all coming in with just Ojeda back.
hey LoHud, great performance on the blog this year. A lot of useful info and history and no nasty stuff. looking forward to next year. With the loss of some real big-game seniors, Suffern will likely not be a pre-season favorite. there will be a lot of new names that will have to step up. I think they will. anyway, it was a very entertaining season and the suffern team gave us a lot of thrills. the mamo players and their coaching staff work very hard on the ice, in the elementary schools etc. similar to what suffern does. if we had to lose, I wanted it to be to a team that truly earned it, both on the ice and off.

It looks like the TIgers won 15 championships. I see Mamaroneck as the league champion in '32, '48 and '50, the Playland Cup champion in '64, the sectional champion in '72-'73, the intersectional play champion in '81, the DII champion in '89, '95, '96, '97. 98 and '99 and the DI champion in '04 and '08. I have no idea which of these "count" as legitimate sectional championships, since they all came in different eras under different conditions. I have put some calls in and will definitely get back to you.

All the credit goes to the Mamk offense and Brian Conner, which is of course well deserved. However, last night it was their defense and goaltending that won them the game. This is a suffern fan and 10, 17, 18 and 8 shut down all of our top guns. They took our style of defensive play and took our offense out of the game. And when the top players did get their chances, glaser was up to the task. Good luck in states Mamk.
To, LoHud, BIFF, ID-11, East of the river, Fanotgame and everyone else that made this year so much fun, i thank you. We had some great times on this blog as well as in the stands watching some great games. I agree BIFF, while I am upset that the season is over, and we lost, I am glad that in the end we lost to a great team with a lot of class. I wish Mamaroneck luck and would love to see them come home with a state championship. (wouldn't be bad being knocked out 2 years in a row by the team that wins it all) To all the seniors on Suffern, you will be greatly missed but the memories we all share are something that will last forever. I wish all of you the best for the future!!! OOOHHH and just think we can start this all over again in just a few months!!! and loHud, you did a great job on the clock last night, that finger was lighting fast!!! couldn't you just have let it run a little while we were up 1-0???

I think you are correct LG=MVP, he made 2 or 3 game saving saves. The point blank shot from Ruthberg and the tip by Salt are 2 that come to mind right away.
To all the bloggers, great season! we saw some great games! Congrats to ALL teams on a well played season.
To Suffern fans, don't worry, I believe your team will still be very good next year – maybe not the League 1 champs (I think Pelham wins League 1 next year), but def, Top 3 in League 1 I think. Hiller, Hill and Jaeger should lead the offense, and you have a solid D in McCarron and Norwin. You have unprovens though in goaltending, and Schelling will have to work out the second lines for both offense and defense. You'll see some new faces getting playing time next year.

Sorry, postman, I have to wear my unbiased hat when I'm out there. As soon as I walk away, I can go back to rooting for Suffern. I learned way back in high school (With the same two teams on the benches, actually), that somewhere on that short list of things a coach absolutely does not want to see, is the guy in my position cheering for either team.
I wouldn't think anything less of you LoHud. By the way i was checking some stats and if the #'s on suffern website are correct, MMK scored ONE more goal then suffern this season in the same amount of games. That is ONE BIG GOAL!!!

Suffern did not have the legs last night. Suffern has run a short bench for years and years and to some degree it has worked for them, so nobody really questions it. However, having been so close to a state championship the last two years but coming up short, (with a big reason for coming up short being 5 or 6 exhausted players), I was hoping that the coaching staff would conclude that you can't play two lines (and the first line a lot more than the 2nd line)and three to four D (including all the power plays and penalty kills) and beat a deep and quick team. You can get away with playing exhausted kids against teams that are good or less than good, but not against teams that are very good and have depth. Mamaroneck is one of those teams. Sometimes we don't run into a team that is that good until after the sections, but this year it was in the section finals. Is it any coincidence that Suffern outplayed Mamo in the 1st period and Suffern used its 3rd line somewhat and the 1st and 2nd lines were not exhausted yet? That 3rd line played with energy and almost scored and forced Mamo to use a lot of energy. but the use of the 3rd line dropped off as the game wore on, just as Suffern needed their energy badly and also needed rest time for the first line especially and the 2nd line a little less (some members of the 2nd line play powerplays and penalty kills and that adds to their load). Too late for my kid, but I hope the coaches watch the film of this game and see how exhausted several Suffern players were and make some changes next year. It looked like the idea was that we would leave our stars out and with them and our goalie, we would protect a 1-0 lead. That was a long time to protect a 1-0 lead. You can't stop playing aggressive hockey. and the best way to prevent a team from scoring is to keep the puck in their zone. but we didn't have the energy to forecheck effectively or the kids were told to only send one player in to forecheck. just because you lose a game doesn't mean the coaching philospohy was wrong, but I would have loved to have seen that 3rd line used a lot more. It seems that when there is a tight game with a lot of pressure, the coaches think it is too risky to use the 3rd line. I think it is too risky not to use the 3rd line. Maybe I'll coach the team next year? I'll wait by the phone. and this is not meant as a real dig at the coaches. they work hard and have given the school and us fans one helluva ride, but it is just a thought.

ALL Section-
The Journal news picks the All-County teams (1st, 2nd, 3rd teams & honorable mention) and an MVP from each side of the river. These can go to anyone no matter what league they play in.
The all League teams, along with League MVP's and other various awards (like the sportsmanship awards and things like that) are chosen by the coaches and awards are given out at the Section 1 dinner after the season is over. For this, there is an MVP for each of the four leagues, and each team has a pre-determined number of players that get all-league honors, depending on where they finish in the standings (I'm not sure what the number is, but for example, the league champ may get 4 guys, 3 to each of the next couple of teams, 2 to the next couple, and 1 to the rest).
Just a fan and am wondering what are his plans for next year.
I must admit I did not see the game, but I am a little suprised to hear how people think Suffern came out flat. If you look at the shot count, I think 23 shots is the most they have had on Mammaronek, and limiting them to only 31 is the least Mamo has had on Suffern.
Anyone who has seen Mamo, or Monroe probably could have recognized in warm-ups who has a deeper pool of talented players, and its not Suffern, it's a credit to the Suffern coaches that they did as well as they did this season. Ironic to hear the coach say its a little easier being the Underdogs, because in my eyes and I am sure in the eyes of some others as well, his team was the underdog in this one. Great season to all, heres hoping next is even better, good luck to Mamo in the states.

I guess you don't want to mention the suffern fans causing Suffern from getting a power play with 14 seconds left because they threw garbage on to the ice. After bragging about how good the fans were all year, and ripping th WP fans for throwing stuff…. look what happens. Mamk was going to get a delay of game penalty for celebrating on the ice after the secong goal, but it was washed out because a bunch of fans (I say a bunch since there was plenty of garbage on the ice) from Suffern threw stuff on the ice.
It is easy to be a good fan when you win 45 in a row. Not so easy when you lose the biggest game of the year. Where was the security? Weere the pertpetrators kicked out? Tell you what, the security at HMX is tight on the kids, but that would never happen at HMX. Partially because nobody goes to the home games.
It was a joke and it was a few KIDS that threw stuff, don't get your panties in a knot! Take it easy there cowgirl.
While it is absolutely true that Suffern would have had a power play for the rest of regulation after Conner's goal until the fans littered the ice with those blue towels, it is debatable whether that would have helped or hurt. The problem with a man advantage at that point in the game when you are down by a goal is it gives Mamk the chance to ice the puck and kill out the precious few seconds Suffern would have had left to score. And with the open net, it gives them an opportunity to actually put in another almost by accident when they heave the puck down the ice.

Forget if it hurt or helped the team. Throwing stuff on the ice is a disgrace at any high school event. There was plenty of stuff, define a few kids. I guess a few kids grabbed everyones stuff and threw it on the ice. When WP does it, they are classless hooligans, but when suffern does it, it is no big deal. I get it now.
I agree with Suffern Fan that if you want to go deep in the playoffs (Section Championship and beyond) you need to run 3 forward lines. You can get away with using just 3 or 4 D men, but to effectively forecheck, you need the third line to give the top 2 lines a break. It can be a rotation like 1,2,1,2,1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,1,2. The coach has to be able to rely on quality minutes from forwards 7 thru 9. Teams do it differently. Some have 2 strong lines and a third line that just plays a trap. Rye, for eg, runs 3 balanced lines for most of the game. It keeps the three most dynamic players from playing on one line together, but gives the coach confidence in each line.
hey Whatever, get over yourself. is this the best you can come up with? Suffern people were not at any of the WP home games this year. We don't know what was thrown or not thrown, who fought or didn't fight, whether you had good security or bad security. whether issues happened repeatedly or not. those were other bloggers complaining about WP. people who were at the games. take your issues up with them. mostly, what ended up on the ice last night were those blue towels that were used for cheering. I did see a kid throw an empty water bottle on the ice and security caught him and dealt with it. it was a big game, a last second defeat and some kids acted the way kids sometimes act. over the course of the year, the suffern crowd and the visiting team's fans have been well behaved at sporto and security has been good.

I'm not condoning throwing anything on the ice, I was responding to you saying that the fans caused them to not get the power play. The fans should not have thrown the towels on the ice. My point was that they most likely didn't hurt the team's chances to come back by doing it.
and for the suffern fans, yes a "few" of them threw waterbottles, but security did a great job in handeling the situation
mamaronecks goalie, sorry i dont know his name, deserves a lot of credit for the win and shouldve been recognized more, he made a save on a shot within the last 2 minutes that was possibly the best save ive seen this season
first thing, all the talk this year was about Natoli, McIndoe, and Regan but Luke has been around all year. I've seen him win tournament championships 1-0 in OT and 2-1 in 2OT (winning goal scored by Hagan). His is a great and clutch goalie (not that the others are not)
Second, playing for Suffern the last 4 years is like playing DIII college with shorter travel distances. They won, had large crowds and plenty of coverage. They can be upset for a month, but after that, they should look back at how lucky they were and how jealous almost every other team in the section is.

Another part of the Mamaroneck success story that is overlooked is this. Rob Gardiner #8 and Sam Christianson #27 both played D last night in the biggest game mamaroneck has had in years. Both players are huge and physical… and guess what? Both kids are freshman.
The JV was 16-1, and the modified had a winning record too. Mamaroneck will certainly miss Conner (how often does a sniper come and dominate the way he has?)and Matt Seid, but they will easily re-load next year and for years to come. The JV and Modified team each had 25 kids on the teams.
As for the towels and water bottles thrown on the ice… I don't see how anyone can defend it… even if you are from Suffern. I also thought the blog would be filled with entries of non-suffern people taunting suffern about the big game. Nice to see almost nobody is ripping the team and trying to make them feel worse than they already do. Even though I think Mamaroneck will be great again next year while suffern has almost all their big shoes to fill, Suffern will be back with another real good team.

Suffern got caught going for the win. Usually Suffern has a forward up high to prevent odd man rushes… this time it seems that they were going for the win. I was positive that the game was going in to overtime…glad to see that it did not.
Channel 12 did not show the Mamk breakout that preceded the goal, so I don't know how anyone could say that they saw it on News 12.

Yes Mamaroneck has that many players, and they don't make cuts until varsity level. Since modified started, they have had about 25 kids on Modified, JV and varsity.
The price they pay is that all 3 teams have practice slots at 5 a.m.
Mamaronecks Hommocks rink does not give MHS great ice times, public sessions and youth hockey takes a front seat as far as ice times are concerned. And while Hommocks rink is located on school grounds, the schools do not own it. The rink is run by the recreation dept. Most people don't realize this. (just in case anyone gives rats butt).

This was my first time watching #21 and to be honest he disappointed me greatly in the way that he acted on the ice, although his finish was for the ages. congratulations but im not sure if that is how i would like my son to play the game.

as far as natoli goes, i hear he will try out for the jersey hitmen and attempt to play for them in the ejhl. He will opt out in going to college to hopefully take the better route to playing the best possibly college hockey. Top division 3 school i believe maybe, MAYBE division 1 medioker.

but even comparing willows to conner, you cannot. willows had 103 as a soph compared to conners 38 as a soph. conner isnt even in the top 5 in the section in points combined over the past two seasons, so, he isnt dominant….and what a player? yes hes a goal scorer, but if he hadnt gotten the puck in front with no one on him with 20 seconds left he would have gone 45 min without doing ANYTHING..thats not dominant

Mamaroneck hockey, you said that Hagan did not crush the kid in front of the net. Did you see a video of this play? I saw it live and saw him get crushed and yelled at the ref to make a call. I also spoke to the kid who was hit and he told me he was cross-checked from behind. But don't take my word for it. Go ask Hagan or wait to see the Mamo video. Don't get me wrong, if I was a Mamaroneck fan or coach, I would have wanted Hagan to do exactly what he did. It was a dangerous situation with a Suffern kid with the puck and a Suffern defender cutting in to possibly receive a pass and have a scoring opportunity. Watch the video or talk to Hagan. Actually, it would be better to just watch the video. I think it is hard for players to remember exactly what happened in the heat of battle.
I agree with Suffern Next Year. Hiller and Hill will not be split up. They should have been together this year but I understand why they weren't. And the Ruthberg, Salt and Hiller line wasn't only split up to balance the lines. Chemistry is very important and they were lacking in chemistry. Hiller and Hill played incredibly well together on their travel team. They get along well and they want to play with each other and pass to each other. If they are allowed to play together, they will create a ton of opportunities for the team.

Ummm I'm pretty sure there was a kid named Matt Willows who completely dominated the Section last year as a SOPHOMORE. 103 points last year. If he was still in Section 1 hockey now, he'd make Connor look like a League 4 player. Don't get me wrong, Connor is a great player but don;t talk like he's the greatest player ever.

Mamk fan says… yes. Definitely a penalty right before that last rush. Either a hit from behind or cross check and it was big because the whistle would have blown right as Mamk touched the puck and the game would have went to OT w/a Suffern power play. Its a part of the game though.
On the news 12 video you can't see the player being taken out in front of the net… but Christiansen is the one who made the pass to Jackson, so the other defensmen, who i think was Zweig, did it

he was outplayed by #9 saturday night, and was outplayed by Suffern players in other meetings, most notably game one between the two teams. he isnt dominant. he is SIXTH in points in the last two seasons combined behind sigona, king, salt, encaracao, and ruthberg
it is also interesting to note that someone last night said this was the greatest moment in mamaroneck sports history lol. had suffern scored w 16 seconds left last night (or with 4:40 like they did) it wouldnt have even been a top 10 game in THESE KIDS FOUR SEASONS…just kinda sad that winning the section is the biggest moment in mamo sports history. suffern won last year and barely celebrated. A CN player from that team whom Im friends with watched the video of the Suffern lockerroom after last seasons CN-Suffern sectional final, and he was shocked about the lack of celebration. No taunting, no screaming, no shirts off on the ice celebration..just, business as usual.

Suffern fans need to understand something, everyone acknowledges the fact that everything you accomplished is incredible. The fact that our team was so excited and the fans are so crazed is because it was so unexpected. This is one of the greatest moments in mamaroneck sports history because we beat you guys, and because we have a shot at states. To win in such dramatic fashion against such an intimidating opponent is something that mamaroneck is going to be proud of and remember for the rest of their lives. Don't put us down because you've already accomplished what we've accomplished, let us enjoy our victory just as you have been able to the past few years.

DPW….lets remember that there were around 900 people at the game the other night, i would say at least 500 were from suffern… so don't lump all suffern people into one group based on the comments of just a few. "typical suffern fan" really shows how little you know. I bet if I knew you I could lump you into some group and come up with a whole bunch of nasty things to say that really aren't true.
Most Suffern fans understand the Mamo celebration. It is a huge accomplishment to win that game at sporto, and come from behind to do it. To break the unbeaten streak and break the section championship streak and beat the team ranked # 1 in NY state. from what I saw, the Suffern players acted with class and congratulated the Mamo players and told them to go beat section 10. I saw a bunch of parents congratulate Coach Chap after the game. and our coach did not make excuses, did not cry about any pivotal calls or non-calls. I also saw many congratulatory posts from Suffern people on this blog. and my son is the player who got hit in front of the Mamo net, and I was standing right behind the Mamo net at the time, and I am not crying about it either. and neither is my son. it is part of the game and Mamo played great and deserved the win. so don't anybody use the term "typical Suffern fan". good luck to Mamo on Saturday.

The last two games against White Plains and Suffern were Conner's worst 2 games of the season! and guess what losers, he still put up 3 goals, one of which won mamo the championship. Did Willows win the section? noooo! Did Willows have a hatrick against suffern? noooo! If any of you went to the majority of Conners game's you would know how dominant he is, if you didn't then you have no idea what you're talking about. Everytime he gets the puck mamo gets a scoring chance, only in the last 2 games did this not happen. He had 45 goals this year, that's almost 2 a game! If you want to talk about how players act how about the way the whole Suffern team acted the first meeting of the season between Mamaroneck and Suffern. Suffern Players turning there backs on Mamaroneck when the Mamaroneck players were being announced. So disrespectful Suffern got what they deserve. Good Luck to Mamaroneck in the states.

Ask anyone on Suffern. In Game 1 at Hommocks the entire Suffern team turned their backs on Mamaroneck as they were being introduced. The flag at Hommocks faces the Mamaroneck side so they were not facing the flag. When the national anthem began is when the first time Suffern turned around to face the flag. This was done as a sign of disrespect and the Mamaroneck coaches, team and fans never forgot that. Coach Chap would have never allowed his team to do that.

someone with class would have said something like "well it was a hard fought battle between the two teams, we have a lot of respect for them, yada yada yada" similar to what the first team all state goaltender said after last seasons section final

try having some class and realize that conners heart was pumping with adrenaline after scoring a goal and BEATING your team. That camera was stuck in his face about 5 minutes after the game was over. You lost, we won. It probably hurts reaaally bad, but just get over it already. Actually, i hope you stay in denial for as long as possible.

Your son played a great game drawing 3 penalties (S/B 4) and had a great season. Also my son was watching along the goal line in Suffern's offensive zone in the 3rd period and agrees that the ref completley missed the call. It was a GOAL. By the way I am not a Suffern parent.
Meglio, Conner's anything but cocky, he's probably the most even mannered kid I know. Now maybe his demeanor in the locker room is different, but as for his personality off the ice, you'd be hard pressed to get a word about his accomplishments out of him.

Lets just leave it as Mamaroneck and Suffern are 2 outstanding teams, everyone knew it would be a close game and it was. One team was going to be horribly disappointed, while the other team was going to be on cloud 9. Suffern had the last 3, so it is amazing for Mamaroneck to win.
Weirdly, I think if Mamaroneck wins on Saturday… they won't be nearly as excited. I don't think a Mamaroneck team has ever made it to the Division 1 semi's …. ever. I think they may have in D2, but I don't think so.
Made it when they were in D-2 in the 90's but have not since they have been in D-1. It would be amazing if they reach the State Championship and win!
To whoever said that Conners quote was cocky…. he actually said "I thought for a second we were gonna loose then Matty Marr restored my faith" or something like that… his quote in the newspaper also talks about how good Suffern's defense is and how tough it was to let up that early goal against them

when you say the shot that marr scored on was deflected, when was this referring to: Marr's shot or the initial shot that hit marr/ was batted down by Marr. It was unclear to me as to how the puck made it to him but i can assure you that Marr's shot had no deflection. I was right there in the stands… Just saying
While visiting from out of town to attend the game I was shocked when the Suffern team turned their backs at game number one. Give Conner a break, he's an 18 year and was clearly excited about winning the game. He doesn't have a pr person or a speech writer. And as far as the finger flipping how many of you have never flipped someone off? Or gone head to head with someone in the heat of the moment? People who live in glass houses should not throw stones.
i also heard randy moss guested as a suffern player and mooned the whitesboro, i mean mamaroneck fans in game 1…disgraceful
Back to Suffern's lines next year, who do you think will be the starting goalie? I don't know either goalie and don't no idea how good they are, but it's going to be hard to take Natoli's place. Are they any good?

they have 2 goalies that are pretty good, rice and gabriel. It is going to be a tough decision for Schelling next year on who to play. I give the advantage to rice because he will be a 4 year varsity player and gabriel is only a 3 year varstity player. Rice also plays on the saints AA team which is made up of a lot of the suffern players and Gabriel plays on the A team which is much weaker.
I think it will be Gabriel over Rice. It already is that way in the few games that they took Natoli out this year. And there is a little story as to why Gabriel is on A and Rice is on AA. No need to get into that here, but right now, I would give the edge to Gabriel based on how the coaches have acted so far and having personally seen each of them play. Or maybe they will split games. But I doubt it. It is there to be won.
I think both will get playing time until one of them proves he is #1. I give the initial advantage to Gabriel. There is also no doubt either one has big shoes to fill.
Gabriel actually filled in for the AA team at districts recently because both Macindoe and Rice we're not available. He actually did very well, winning 3-2. Gabriel picked up the only win for the AA team. But yeah like what was stated before, both are good goalies and schelling definitely has a tough decision to make.
All 3 midget AA games were well played games that could have gone either way. The win was against a #3 seed from DVHL and the 2 losses were against the #1 seeds from NJYHL and the DVHL. The team played great in all 3 games but cam up short 2-0 to Vineland and 2-1 to the Reading Royals. They did win against the Quakers 3-2 on saturday morning when some of the players were taken the SAT"s. The AYHL should be ashamed that they scheduled district playoff games the Saturday of a national SAT date.
from what i heard they had to change the date they origianlly planned on due to another conflict (forget what it was).. so the fact that they changed it to the same day as the SAT's wasn't entirely their fault. They knew about the SAT conflict but didn't really have a choice..

I don't agree, even if for some reason they had to play on saturday then why not start the games in the afternoon to accomodate the SAT's. This might have meant games being played late Saturday night which i think hockey teams are use to.
this is what I overheard, some guy was talking to one of the AAHA guys behind the tables and that is what he told him. I have no idea if it is true or not.. but it sounded good to me.. i also heard it from one of the coaches..who knows, and who cares, maybe the delaware people have a lot of dumb kids who aren't taking the SAT's and thought they would have an advantage.. ha ha
All I can say is congrats to Mamaroneck on their win and Suffern you had a very good year. So im saying congrats to both teams
