Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley

State tournament Saturday

March
1

I spent Friday at the County Center watching four Class A semifinal basketball games, and I can sum it all up in one word: Blowout. Or six words: The exact opposite of playoff hockey. The scores were 58-37, 79-47, 61-51 and 57-44.

So I’m glad to get back to the rinks, where I expect three close, exciting games today. I’m not going to go crazy with predictions because I have absolutely no idea what to expect from teams seven hours away, without a single common opponent. Gut feeling is that Rye will win, Iona Prep will lose, and Mamaroneck is 50/50. Only because Rye is playing so well right now, Iona Prep’s opponent is 5-0 in the state championship game and Mamaroneck and Massena both have about the same ranking and seem like similar teams. What does everyone else think?

It’s sobering to think that after three months, today could be the last day I cover hockey for a long time. Or I could be in Utica next weekend covering four games. And it will probably all be decided between 9-10 p.m. We’ll have a different reporter covering all three games, though I definitely plan on going from Hommocks to the Ice Hutch after my interviews. Google Maps provided this route, though if someone has a better idea I’m listening.

harold i have been waiting for a new blog and even though mamk won sectionals the blog are sort of lonely now that only 3 teams actually still in…i will be at hommocks seems the most interesting but im rooting for section 1 and if mamaroneck can beat massena it will mean more and exciting hockey for you harold. what i was wondering was if you could find information on the total limit for ppl that are going to be allowed at hommocks. i heard it was 1000 ppl and that u should be there at 45-30 mins b4 and the jungle is gonna be packed. i hope other teams and fans come watch and support mamk for section 1 and hopefully to see another day of hockey in utica. massena be ready mamk will not want to disappoint in the most crowded game of the year similiar to last year against scarsdale and believe me, u wont wanna be there….lets got tigers lets go all the way..

  2. Go Section 1

Harold, did I miss it or was there no mention in today's JN about the public school hockey playoffs? I would have thought there would have at least been a short notice that today is the day with times and locations. Of course, bloggers know, but what about the other fans who are not keeping up with this minute by minute?

I think the quiet on the blog is indicative of just how much it was dominated by "As the Suffern World Turns" and "Just How Good is White Plains Anyway?". Not dissing anyone here, just my observation.

Good job Harold for your first year. My unsolicited advice is that next year you should try to go beyond the boldface names. Just from watching the team I follow, I know that there are critical players whose contributions went largely unrecorded in favor of those who accumulated the points and the goalies. There were people who really were team players and did not get the glory. And before everyone jumps on me, I am not talking about my own son, just other good kids I know who contributed a lot and didn't get much notice compared to other players whose teams had a lot of buzz about them.

  3. Thomas McKenna

I am looking for the Mamaroneck-Massena game to be a tight
one. I can tell you that all the upstate blogs and talk is
that Massena is gonna crush Mamaroneck….As a Suffern fan,
I was quite impressed with Mneck in all three games this
year. Mneck has a very good team. I had to put my two
cents in with those up-state bloggers and let them know
that they could be in for a shock if they think Massena,
after their 6 hr bus ride, is going to crush Mneck.
I've even seen on those upstate blogs "so-called" section
one, Monroe Woodbury fans giving scouting reports on how
to beat Mamaroneck. I hope Mneck runs them out of the rink.

  4. Thomas McKenna

Harold wondering if you could answer this: Did the state
hockey playoff structure change this year??? How is
Monroe Woodbury in the tourney when they lost to Burke in
the Section IX final??? Last year Clarkstown North lost
the section I final and was an "at-large" birth. They
had to travel upstate and play two or three "out bracket"
games to get to the quarterfinals. That all must have
    changed this year, no??

  5. Wow

Wow – this blog has really slowed since Suffern and Pelham lost.

Good luck today to Mamaroneck, Rye & Iona Prep!

  6. : Hockey Fan

    Thomas McKenna,
As I understand it, MW qualified for the Div.I tournament as the Section 9 representative because they are the only team in Div. I for Section 9. MW would have advanced to the State playoffs whether they had won or lost in the Section 9 playoffs.

Last year, MW was was classified as a Div II team so it opened a spot for another team in the Div I bracket because there was no Section 9 representative and thereby only seven Section champions in Div. I To fill the vacant eighth slot in the tournament bracket, the State Association created an out-bracket qualifying playoff structure in which CN played. In 2008, because there are eight Section teams qualifying, there was no need for an out-bracket.

  7. Good Luck Rye!

Good Luck Rye! Your first line defense has been awesome shutting down the competition and your goalie has been unflappable lately. Sounds like a winning situation if you add a few goals from senior forwards. Rye Hockey plays fast & smart with a lot of heart which may be the key tonight! It doesn't hurt that you have seniors that make things happen & win the big playoff games and will raise the level of the players around them. Go Garnets.

  8. : Hockey Fan

The blog may have slowed down but the action will be fast and furious at the three games today. Good luck to Rye, Mamamaroneck & Iona!

  9. shuddup

no way Iona's going to loose, this is the year st. joe's streak ends, they have come to far and worked to hard to loose now, they have their full team back, and there are not going down without a fight, not literally, they have the speed the talent and the determination to return the title for the very first time! i for see an excellent game, one of which the team who truly wants it will come out on top. GO GAELS!!

  10. G0 mamaroneck!

Hey thanks to the Mamaroneck Hockey team players that came to the rye vs pelham game to cheer them on! Good luck to Mamaroneck tonight.

  11. Old School Mountie

Still recovering from that crushing loss on Monday but I'll be rooting for Mamaroneck throughout the playoffs. You guys have one hell of a team and I wish you the best of luck against the upstate teams. Bring home the championship for Section 1! Keep us updated on the game tonight…

  12. Biff

Agree with Old School Mountie. Still recovering from the crushing loss and rooting for Mamo (and Rye)tonight. Two great teams who played Suffern incredibly tough this year. I think we can listen to the Mamo game on the section X weblink that somebody posted on one of the blogs, but will also look for updates on the blog. I hear that the best therapy for a tough loss, is more hockey. Wish I could see the Mamo game tonight but my sons Saints team just won a district game this morning (in Aston PA) and they have another one late this afternoon and hopefully another one tomorrow morning. So can't make the Mamo game. I know. Nobody cares. But people said the blog was lonely, so I thought I 's throw something out there.

  13. Axl Rose

I am hoping that the HMX is 99% section 1 supporters. And to Massena and their supporters who made the trip.
"You're in the Jungle Baby…. You're gonna Dieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" – Axl Rose

  14. West of the River

    GO RYE!

  15. East of the river

Biff. Hey, most, if not all of us, of a certain age here started with travel hockey. So – Good luck to your son's team at Districts !

And Let's Go Section ONE !!!!!!

  16. mimijr

I'm at the Catholic game with my Berry

1 hour until the puck drops

  17. Thomas McKenna

I don't believe the Mneck-Massena game is on a weblink. The Section X site is www.northcountrysports.net and it does
broadcast live high school hockey but unfortunatley not this
game. You can have a look…it lists the live broadcasts and
this game is not listed. I did listen to the Section X final
on this site, Massena vs Potsdam..lol..i know..i need to get
    a life.

  18. fan bus

any score of mw vs lanncaster

  19. people's choice

can anyone give me the link for the upstate blogs???

  20. mimijr

    1-0 St. Joe's after 1 from a breakaway

  21. LoHud Hockey

MW was losing 4-0 to Lancaster after 2 last I heard, but that was an hour ago.

  22. mamk

    http://www.syracuse.com/forums/hshockey/

thats the link for the upstate blog people's choice

  23. mimijr

    4-0 St. Joe's after 2

  24. mamk

mw – lancaster ended up 6-0 lancaster…mw should go back to d2 …so much talking trash… they got it good

  25. mimijr

    5-1 St. Joe's

  26. Thousand Islands

Thanks mamk for that link. Got some intelligence about a possible dirty player from TI who was accused of butt ending a Salmon River player. Rye will have to watch out for him.

  27. Thomas Jefferson

Iona Prep embarrassed themselves and the CHSHL. Not b/c they lost; nothing they could do about playing a team vastly superior. Their fans screamed vulgarities at the opposing team and some of their players took cheap shots against the other players. #29 was a particular sore losing disgrace. He was frustrated by #10 on the other team who was like twice as good as him so he chased him down and slashed him at the end of the game when the kid was going to the bench with his back turned. I think it was his 2nd or 3rd unsportsmanlike penalty of the game. Classless and embarrassing. I was ashamed to be wearing a CHSHL hat.

  28. O BABYYYY

you should be embarrassed to rip high school kids. and those unsportsmanlike penalties weren't on Iona, they were on St. Joes. Get you facts straight and stop belittling kids who are barely old enough to drive. get a life you punk

  29. Thomas Jefferson

YOU get the facts straight. Were you even at the game? Go look up the score sheet. Check the penalties of the gutless wonder #29.

  30. Disgusted Viewer

    Thomas Jefferson

You are exactly right on about what you saw as I was amazed to see how the last few minutes played out. Its sorry to see that the Iona players whether frustrated or not lost their cool and initiated the slashing. As for the Iona student who was beyond vulgar in attacking the St. Joe's players; it was just an ongoing assault non-stop at the end. The security people standing there did nothing to stop him. No doubt who he was, wearing his Iona Prep baseball sweatshirt. As for the team, they had a super year but I was dissappointed by the fact that the coaches seemed to have no control over their loose cannons on the ice all year. Out of character for Iona.

  31. next year

I am a parent and my kid plays on one of the teams in the CHSHL (not Iona). I understand what everyone is saying about Iona's actions but you have to understand that these are kids that are just plain frustrated and wanted to win. I am not going to sit here behind my computer and bash them because they earned they earned the right to be in that game. You can bash them for whatever reason you want, but it is not right for people to jump on the blog and bash the team that beat your son's team. Iona was a great team and nothing that happened was that bad. Do not use this blog to jump on a team because they beat your team. Just isn't right. There are a lot of good kids on that team that I know personally. Also stop making it seem like everything was initiated by Iona. If anyone saw #19 on St. Joes shooting his mouth off before the 3rd on the redline then you would see where some of the hostility came from. Good season Iona, tough luck today.

  32. Thomas Jefferson

    To Disgusted Viewer:

Thanks for corroborating what I stated. I saw the guy you mentioned in the sweatshirt. His behavior was truly abysmal. I also heard another one telling Iona's players to start a fight.

I echo what you said. Iona had a terrific year. It's too bad that a few of their players and many of their student fans conducted themselves the way they did.

  33. Bracketology

I predict this final 4 and final-

    Massena over Lancaster

    Shen over Fairport

    Shen over Massena

  34. Thomas Jefferson

    To "next year":

If your comments are directed toward me, you couldn't be more off base. I don't have any children and don't have a "team." It's not a good idea to leap to conclusions.

  35. next year

you think my comments are directed towards you? chances are you are no one important so you shouldn't be jumping to conclusions either…

  36. postman

I am so sorry that I am not going to make it tonight, just got back from PA (saints distict championships). I am looking forward to updates and i still cannot believe i am watching this from the outside.. GO MAMARONECK!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. Not needed

Its high school kids at a high school game, what do you think is going to happen? I'm sorry people aren't always professional at events and I'm sorry that people can't always control their emotions, but its ridiculous to whine about their behavior. #29 is actually a really good guy who just had a moment where his emotions got the better of him. Its stupid to complain about fans watching games with a lot of their friends playing. No one was serious about starting a fight. You have to look at things in context.

  38. jimmy dangles

    updates if possible

  39. yeah

mamk tied it 1-1 with .4 left in the first

  40. hockey

1-1 mamaroneck just tied it up

  41. yeah

    atleast according to http://www.syracuse.com/forums/hshockey/

  42. icehole

    Not needed
Just remember the game at Ebersol with White Plains and how the spectators embarassed the players. Its not whining@ just a HS game, its about upbringing.Do you think some of the best role model players in our leagues (Natoli,King,Eck ect)would lower themselves to this level at that kid's baseball game?

  43. Hey Stepinac

HEY STEPINAC, Way to show up at the Championship game, sit on St.Joe's side and applaud as loud as you could to cheer for St.Joe's. Reagan, really showed ALOT of Class. Glad he got lit up like a Birthday Cake against Iona. AND GLad STEPINAC WILL NEVER EVER see a Championship game again! Just remenmber that IONA won the championship this year, they might of lost to a good St.Joe's team, but they have nothing to be ashamed of. But at least Stepinac won a JV title….....LOL

  44. CHSHL Fan

    next year,

Next year, don't worry about ther comments about Iona. The comments are coming from the players from Stepinac….. Can you spell, Jealous!!!!!.. I was there at the game and the only idiots that acted STUPID were the fans fron Stepinac cheering for St. Joe's.

  45. Frustrated Crusader

    Disgusted Viewer,

Now what game were you watching. COuld you be another Frustrated Stepinac Fan?

  46. hockey

  58. hockey

    second period 40 secs left

  59. TYRONE

DOES ANYONE HAVE CHARLIE RONIES FRESH BOUGES?

  60. party central

Any update on the Rye game yet? We are not patiently waiting!!!

  61. screw lohud

shuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuudddddupp all of you people complaining about molinaro, did anyone see the cross check to the back by number 10 of saint joes, guess not, granted he should not of responded like that, number 19 jumped off the bench and tried to fight him, don't act like u didnt see that, hats off to iona, fantastic season goodluck to you guys next year

  62. PUBLIC SCHOOLS

nobody really cares about iona, stepinac, st.joes etc.. just go away. I really hope you pay all of that money for the education, because the hockey teams are a waste of time.. sorry but true..

  63. hudson shore

I got it on the phone

  64. hudson shore

    rye 1-0 end of first

  65. IonaPower

Stepinac has been jealous of Iona for years. Iona dominates Stepincrap in every sport. Iona has spanked Stepinac this year in Football, Basketball, and of course Hockey. Stepinac will always be second rate!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  66. fanotgame

1-0 Rye after 1. Rye has better of play. TI goalie nasty. Mundinger hit post on penalty shot. Eck buried one on PP. Go Garnets.

  67. Loser!

    PUBLIC SCHOOLS,

Then challenge the CHSHL. You'll lose also!

  68. Dictionary

When you look up the word "LOSER" in the dictionary, you'll see Stepinac mentioned…..LOL

  69. Thomas Jefferson

    To Public Schools:

You obviously didn't follow the results this year. Several public school teams were defeated by several CHSHL teams. Know the info first next time.

  70. Tman

    ladies..ladies…stop!!..Incidentally Rye up 2-0

  71. Public better

And they cannot recruit like Catholic teams can

  72. PUBLIC SCHOOLS

didn't beat suffern, i know that, for that matter suffern crushed iona, wasn't even a game, not really sure what mamroneck did against them for that matter.

  73. Steers

How much time left in the Period

  74. PUBLIC SCHOOLS

i like saying that.. for that matter, for that matter. those are good words, and here are better ones. CHSHL is sooo bad, you really need to ask for some more $, take some from the football team, that is really the only thing that is worth going to one of these schools for. Teachers are terrible, if they were so good why didn't they get a job in the public school system? It is a well know fact that when you can't get a job in the public schools, you turn to the private ones, for that matter,

  75. LoHud Hockey

Mamk & Massena are tied at 2 with about 3 minutes left according to the message board on Syracuse.com.

Rye is beating TI 2-1 midway through the second.

  76. LoHud Hockey

TI just ied it up & mamk just had the go-ahead goal waived off according to syracuse.com

  77. postman

you home LoHud? why not at the game??

  78. LoHud Hockey

I promised the wife weeks ago that the week after Suffern's season ended I would get started on the Honey-do list that has been getting longer & longer all season. And no matter how much Rosto & I tried to get her to change her mind, she held me to it.

  79. Tman

    Mamaroneck-Massena going to OT!!!!

  80. LoHud Hockey

TI went up 3-2 midway thru the third and mamk/massena going to OT.

  81. Steers

The jungle must be going insane!

  82. postman

LOL.. sorry for you.. i have to tell you i am a little sad being on the outside like this. We should be at sporto right now celebrating.. :(

  83. postman

syracuse just said that massena won.

  84. jon

mneck lost 29 seconds into ot…

  85. Suffern Fan

Good…now Mamaroneck knows how it feels to lose a heartbreaker at home.

  86. fanotgame

Rye went up 2-0 and then had a bad 4 minutes letting in 3. Go get 'em Rye.

  87. yeah

i lost all respect for the mamaroneck team after some kid who warmed the bench made a facebook group about one of sufferns players…i really wanted them to go far and its ashame that their player did that

  88. moneymaker

now u guys no how suffern feels to lose the big game at home.. at least we have class and dont make facebook groups about kids on the team crying. good run guys maybe next year. NOT! sufferns ready to play

  89. Old School Mountie

For those old enough to remember Wide World of Sports, you'll remember Jim McKay in the intro…"the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat!" Congratulations to Mamaroneck for a great season and for fighting the good fight against a tough upstate team in Massena. This one will hurt for a long time but time marches on. It's been a pleasure blogging this year but as the Section 1 season is now complete, we must look ahead to the fall and the renewal of old rivalries. To the seniors…thanks for the memories guys. And to the juniors…it'll soon be your turn to shine. Good night all!

  90. Thomas Jefferson

Who's the moron that said they "recruit"? Wow, this kid is clueless. Kind of funny that his "awesome" public team got slapped by upstate.

  91. Hockey Parent

    Rye score?

  92. sing along

na na na na. na na na na. Hey Hey Hey. GOOD BYE

  93. Old School Mountie

    Rye lost 4-2.

  94. Suffern Fan

Thanks for calling me a 7-year-old and then following it up with a racial, profane, idiotic comment. You're a really classy person…

Did you need Mamaroneck to win to "validate" Suffern's season? Give me a break. Great teams lose heartbreakers all the time, and the "best team" doesn't always win. I'll just end with this: thanks to Suffern for a great season. Those kids are some of the classiest kids I've ever met, a hell of a lot classier than you, "tman".

  95. not league 1

TMAN, Suffern never gave anybody else in the section any respect. And why do you accuse someone of being a 7 year old then turn racist?

  96. Slacrosse

Good game and all credit to TI. Rye up 2-0 then ???????. Missed a penalty shot and couldn't convert on power plays and TI did convert on one and believe scores shorthanded. Just one of those nites.

Great season Rye. You should be very proud of yourselves. I know the fans are. To the seniors, Eck, Marshall, Gordon,Wenzel,Rogers, Nishino, you played like champs all season, not only displaying great hockey skills but you're also a "class" bunch of kids who've represented Rye in the best tradition. Good luck!!

  97. Section 10

Section 10 continues their years of dominanca over section 1. I know you comeback will be 1992. Suffern was lucky. No talent on tha team in 92!

  98. Suffern

    ok
