Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley

It's over

March
2

I have to admit, I never thought the season would be over on March 1. Especially not when Mamaroneck was up 2-1 and Rye was up 2-0. But the unpredictability that make playoff hockey so exciting—the fact that each shift, each shot, yes each call, can turn a game—turned against our teams, and now the three-month-plus season is over.

I never made it to Rye, so here’s the game story from Eric Lebowitz. I was at Mamaroneck, where I experienced the most wild swing of emotions I’ve seen since, well, Monday. The Tigers had a goal disallowed in the final three minutes, killed a penalty that started with 1:32 left after Massena had scored twice in 17 seconds in its two previous power-play chances, and then gave up a disputed goal 29 seconds into overtime. I tried to cram as much detail into my story as possible, and I’ll write more when I can.

I thought Messana dominated the first period, but Luke Glaser was great and Mamaroneck tied the game with 0.4 seconds left. From there I thought Mamaroneck was the better team in the second period (though it took one penalty, which was one penalty too many), and the third period was even. Another huge crowd, by the way. It reached the 1,000-person limit before the opening faceoff.

Anyway, like I said I’ll have some more thoughts later on (including who the Massena coach told me was the Mamaroneck player he was most impressed with besides Conner). And in the days and weeks ahead I’ll be posting some top moments from the season and some predictions for next year, as well as whatever all-league and all-selection selections come in, and of course The Journal News all-star (Westchester/Putnam) and all-county (Rockland) teams, as well as the coach and player of the year. And when the time comes, I’ll let everyone know the new league alignments and Division I/Division II splits.

So while the games are over for the next nine months, I hope we keep the conversations going. But I also understand that this is the end of the road for some of you, and I just want to let you know that I appreciate the time you’ve spent here.

    We never forget "Team 2007-2008".
Thank you for showing us many great games!!
    GO RYE HOCKEY !!

  2. Go to the tape

I was at the Mamaroneck Game last night. I didn't think the stick was higher than the crossbar on the final goal. I think Chiaparelli was looking for a sympathy call after the Mamaroneck goal had been waived off in the 3rd period.

In the previous blog, the rule was clarified regarding the hand pass call that reversed the Tigers goal. A Massena player would have had to gain posession of the puck to negate the hand pass. Clearly, no Massena player gained possession.

I was disappointed in Coach Chiaparelli's "sour grapes" comments in the Journal News, especially in light of the fact that he capitalized on the poor officiating in Mondays game against Suffern. I thought he was classier than that.

Sean Hagan, on the other hand, was extremely classy in his comments.

  3. East of the river

Go to the tape: I agree with you no the Massena goal. It was legal. I also agree with the call on the hand pass goal. The only thing that makes that controversial is the outside ref having to come in late and overrrule. That never looks good and causes extra controversy. Also agree Coach C. should have swallowed and given credit to both teams for a hard fought, close game. At the end of the day "That's hockey".

Harold – thanks for a nice job on the blog this year. Keep the posts up and current and you'll still get traffic.

Congratulations to Rye and Mamoroneck on their terrific seasons.

And congratulations to Section X putting two teams into Utica. Massena is certainly a high quality team. And given 1000 Islands comeback on Rye they sure seem to deserve their shot in the frozen four as well.

    And now…...on to baseball.

    LETS GO METS !!

  4. Mamo rules

I am posting this twice, once in the previous post just to get more opinions.
    http://www.news12.com/NewCDA/articles/media_pop?region=WC&id=53022&preview=false
Some Suffern contingents feel that they should get calls with 2 minutes left in a championship game… they did and did not score. They also feel there should have been a penalty called on the game winner. Show me on this video where the penalty is, if the penalty happened to a defenseman deep in the mamk zone out of camera view… then I ask why is a d caught down low with less than 30 seconds left ina tie game. Next you will see a 3 on 1 because the mamaroneck kid outhustles 2 suffern players driving to the net, maybe this was because mamk played 3 lines all night while suffern barely played 2. Then ask yourself why would the D on suffern not take away the pass and let natoli handle the shooter? Conner is the highest goal scorer in section 1, why would you not take away that pass, and be confident in the best goalie in the state (which I agree with, he is the best goalie in the state) to stop jackson? There are so many reasons why suffern lost to Mamaroneck,,, the biggest one being that Mamaroenck outplayed them in every aspect of the game from beginning to end. Is Suffern an excellent team? Yes, howver, that night Mamk was better, faster etc. I will post this on the other blog too, let me know where I am wrong after you watch the tape.

  5. The Truth Be Told

    Mamo rules,

The "non penalty" was in front of the Mamaroneck Net. On our video it appeared to be a cross check allowing Mamaroneck to pass the puck up to Jackson who just got on the ice as the penalty expired. The 3 on 1 evolved from there and yes the Suffern Defenseman blew it. It happened just before the Channel 12 tape starts. But a call there would have stopped the play. And lets not forget the Suffern goal that was called off. The puck was clearly loose and put past Glaser.

What else you want to know?

  6. East of the river

Mamo rules and Truth: Time to move on folks. When the buzzer goes off the game is over.

  7. postman

the fact that the other official came in to override the call just shows good teamwork in my opinion. Sometimes the ref closest to the play doesn' have the best angle. I commend the refs for working together to get what "they" thought was the correct call. I wasn't there so i don't have any opinion on the call but, this is why there is more then one ref out there, they need to work together and that is what it looks like happened. To continue the argument on the non call against suffern is just stupid. Should there have been a call? Yes, but nothing that happens on the ice is a penalty unless the refs sees it, blows his whistle, and it is called. congrats to mamaroneck on a great season!!

  8. Suff fan

I think the only reason Suffern is bringing up the non-calls is because Mamo's coach isn't the only coach to have to endure a tough defeat that could have been different had a call or two been made differently. I really never heard Suffern whine about the calls and the Suffern coach showed class in not even mentioning them in his post-game interview. The Mamo coach acted a little unprofessional. Maybe Sean Hagan can give his coach some lessons as he came across a helluva a lot better than his coach. Maybe that's because he is already thinking about striking out the side with his 90 mph heat.

This is why there should be an outbracket.. Suffern at least knows how to get things done in the state tournament.

  15. My Two Cents

I have to agree that the Mamaroneck coach's comments in today's paper did not reflect well on his team; however, I would make two comments about this. First, the quotes by his player show that they certainly know how to carry themselves with class and dignity; I couldn't have been more impressed with Hagan's composure (as evidenced by his quotes in the paper) immediately following a heartbreaking loss. Second, it further highlights how emotions can get the best of us at very intense times; I've read some criticisms of some Suffern players for showing emotion on the ice at the end of the game, but I think it was terrific to see evidence of players putting EVERYTHING into their effort to win and just needing to "release" that emotion. Remember, for those that were there, they weren't yelling at refs or refusing to shake hands…quite the contrary, they were simply "letting it out." I'm sure Coach Chap is a great coach and a great person, but I'll also bet he'd like to have those quotes back this morning.

    OR

"It was two great teams, and they got the best of us tonight. They played a great game, so did we, and they got a bounce at the end and got the win. It's tough when you have two great teams in the section. Only one can go on."—-???

  17. amen CN

mamaroneck had never won, nor played a big game upstate

sufferns been involved in many for years

04-05 lost at shen in quarters
05-06 shutout shen and west genny in west genny tournament, beat shen 3-2 in ot at sporto in state quarters before falling to AQ-4-3 in utica
06-07 beat shen in quarters at shen 4-2, lost 1-0 in a shootout after 7 scoreless 0-0 hockey vs next day state champs ithaca
07-08 won west genny and liverpool tournaments knocking off aquinas, liverpool, greece, etc, and dominated MW

all of these games plus those tight CN games-section title OT, reg season OT, etc) were more meaningful than the game monday night, which was the biggest game of their careers for the mamaroneck players

  21. Thousand Islands and Pelham Hockey

It was to be expected that you'd keep that quote in your back pocket to rub in that player's face. You're going after a kid who has had a tremendous year in sports and basically was just sharing the wealth by expressing appreciation for the passion, commitment and winning spirit he has witnessed in his teammates for a number of years across several sports. Sorry you didn't approve of his choice of words. He doesn't have a media consultant.

  22. Pelham Hockey

Yea, we took Jordan Eck's quote after the Pelham game, and just put in Thousand Islands over Rye. If its classless for us to say it, it was classless for Jordan Eck to say it.

    And I quote
"That's just our competitive nature," said Eck, the quarterback on this year's state championship team. "Rye kids are different than other kids. We expect to win, we know how to win and we know how to get it done, and we really showed that tonight."

  25. Suff fan

Pelham Hockey produced the evidence for you Slacrosse. If you say something cocky after a win, you have to expect it to come back to you after a loss.

  26. Lester

For the most part, the kids handled these high pressured situation better than the adults. They let their emotions out in positive ways…congratulating the winners, and if a tear dropped here or there it was because they cared sooo much about their team. There were no altercations, fights, taunting, DQ's. So for that, great job. There is no shame in showing your emotions in that manner. Trust me on this, you will get over these losses (some of you may already have) and in time you will learn from them. It will make you a stronger person. I won't soon forget the anguish in Sufferns players, knowing that they had something special going and it was over, those kids will be stronger adults as they learn from this. They will be able to spring back from life's ups and downs better than people who never played sports, and that is what I hope my kids will get out of all this. The discipline, the exercise, the commitment, the teamwork, the camaraderie, the pride, and most of all the friends. Most of you will have at least a couple of life-long friends from the teams you played on (whether you had the best team or the worst team), you will have a bond with your teammates that nothing can break. You went through a unique experience that nobody can ever replicate. Congrats on all the fun you gave the parents and fans. We look forward to seeing it all again next year and for years to come. And to the seniors, hopefully in some way, big or small you will come back and give back a little of yourself to help continue this great sport.

  28. Travel Team

Borderline comment as far as graceful winning goes. However, I think it was made out of pride of that particular moment and not necessarily as disrespect for the opponent.

It seems the Rye team accepted their loss with the good sportmenship that they usually show in their victories.

  29. To the Seniors

Congratulations to all the seniors in section I for a great hockey season and best wishes to you all.

To the Mamo seniors, Naclerio, Bruno, Seid, Hardy and Darland, you have showed great dedication and true friendship since your days as Travel Mite teamates. Brian Conner, you have worked hard as a 4 year varsity player, giving up travel to play the last two seasons for your high school team. You're a great group of young men, best of luck to you.

  32. MVP Award

For Rockland it looks like Natoli!

For Westchester, I think there are three candidates that could possibly win? Eck,Connor and King. All three had tremendous seasons, all three had GREAT varsity careers, all three helped guide their teams to Championships, all three came up BIG in their Championship games, all were true leaders on the ice and all were members of the Empire team.

Tough decision! Good luck to all…...

  33. Massena

I have followed this forum throughout the 2007-08 season with pleasure. The insigt into each game by the regular posters here gave a picture of the quality of hockey in section 1 throughout the season. Everyone always has an oponion on the better sections, however, in the last few years it has been obvious that there is quality throughout the state. This was obvious last night at the Massena/MMK. These were two quality teams that put on a great display of hockey. The bloggers who have been so negative regarding that game should learn from the players. The MMK athletes were prob the classiest group of players Massena had faced throughout the year. It is not easy to handle any lose, especially at this point in the season. MMK players good luck in whatever comes next you truly are a class act.

As for the bloggers who made comments about the Massena Fans and their coach, it is one thing to be mad but another to make things up. The comments that have been made are ridiculous.

The other thing is the coach!!! You would think at least at one point he might have said they played a quality team! He continued to make a fool of himself well after the game was over. Does anyone know what happened to the clock and why it went out just before Massena PowerPlay? And also why did the coach keep changing the game time (warm-up) just prior to the game? The radio had to change times at least three times because there coach kept changing the warmup time. The arena director did not even know why the guy was doing that.

  34. Coaching Techniques

The Mamaoneck coach has been that way for years. There has been a Love/Hate relationship between him and his players throughout the years. Just look how he handled that situation this year when his player flipped the bird to the opposing team. He just really ignored that whole situation.

How difficult would it of been for him to give praise to the other team. But that's how he is and don't think anything will change in the coming years. Acts the same in baseball.

  36. Bruce Hood

Mamaroneck v. Massena – to clarify the rules which dictated the calls on the two plays everyone seems to be talking about, note the following, which is taken directly from the NFHS rule book, which governs public HS hockey games:

Rule 6-15 Art. 3 A goal shall NOT be allowed if:
    a. The puck is kicked, thrown, carried or otherwise deliberately directed into the goal by any means other than by a stick. . .EVEN IF THE PUCK BOUNDS OR DEFLECTS OFF THE PERSON OR EQUIPMENT OF ANY DEFENSIVE PLAYER INTO THE NET

When the Mamaroneck player deliberately directed the puck with his hand toward the Massena goal, it was possibly the worst thing he could have done, because the only way a goal could have been scored at that point was for him to shoot it in (which he did not) or for a Massena player to intentionally shoot it into his own net (fairly unlikely). He would have been better served to allow the puck to drop into the crease, where it was headed anyway before he played it with his hand.

    The overtime goal:
Rule 6-18 Art. 1 The puck may not be played or stopped with any part of the stick when the puck is over 4 feet off the ice.

The Massena shot never got above 4 feet – the measurement reference is easy – the goal frame is 4 feet high. No matter what the puck hit (and it is not clear that it hit anything, let alone a stick), so long as it was 4 feet or less, the deflection would not nullify the goal.

Those are the rules and it takes a lot of fortitude to enforce them, not matter how unpopular. But that is what the officials are there for. The rules cannot be ignored out of convenience, to gain popularity with the home crowd or to "even up" a (poorly) perceived injustice.

The players played a fantastic game and left everything they had out on the ice. Unfortunately, one team had to lose. To criticize the officials, rather than congratulate Massena denegrates the effort put forth by the teams.

  37. All Sufffern County

    fiya,

Absolutely, Novick had a great year and has been a big producer for that team for 3 years. And he came up REAL abig against Rye!

  38. Ungrateful Massena

Mamaroneck allowed Massenas internet radio play by play people to do their show from on top of the skate rental stand, which they needed a ladder to get up there. I would love to know how much they would have sued the town of Mamaroneck if they fell off the damn skate rental stand, or if the thing collapsed.
If I were the coach or more importantly the rec. dept of mamk I would have told them no way they are doing that radio show. The rink does not have a damn press box, too bad.

  39. Massena

Get a life man….you are really stretching for someting now. Massena is fortunate to have a radio station that has covered every hockey game for over 30 years. Maybe your school or town should try to develop the same positve enthussiasm they have in Massena. How about the law suit of the mmk fans rocking the Massena bus (fan) if they had flipped it as it was leaving. What about the security at the game….oh pretty much non existant in areas where it was needed.

  40. LoHud Hockey

    To all league 1 predictions:

The all-league selections are not set up like that. All county (Journal News awards) does 1st team, 2nd team (limiting it to a certain number of players at each position). The all league selections are selected by the coaches and are a pre-determined number of players from each team depending on where they finished in the standings.

    To All Suffern County:

The Journal News never pulls the entire first team from Suffern no matter how much better they are than the rest of the county. Since they can't squeeze McIndoe in there (No way you can put him ahead of Natoli), my guess is O'Connor from North Rockland will make it as a forward and they'll bump one of the Suffern forwards to 2nd team.

  41. Possible All County Selections

  42. fiya

    All Sufffern County,
thank you for realizing how great of a player Novick is. Most people put Conner on a different tier than Novick, but if Novick was on an offensive powerhouse such as mamaroneck, he'd put up some huge numbers, even bigger than the numbers he's already putting up.

  43. question

Do the coaches pick the all league honors and stuff or does the journal news?

  44. LoHud Hockey

Coaches do all league. Journal News does all county.

  45. Slacrosse

    Pelham hockey/Thousand Islands

Yes, now I remember reading that and obviously agree his choice of words came out wrong. It was just a very emotional moment after a big win over a great Pelham team. I dont believe that it was meant to be taken as a disrespect to Pelham and Rye's players have taken a classy attitude towards other teams after wins and losses.

  46. Sorry Lohud Hockey

Lohud Hockey- you are the most educated person when it comes to High School Hockey which is very respectable. BUT, now what are you going to do since most of us know who you are and your post, even if posted under another name next year, will be easily identified as yours by their insane knowledge lol. Was a great year and loved reading your post

  47. Re All League

regarding Novick,he is not only a very skilled player, but also an exceptional leader and friend to his teammates on and off the ice. He has a way to rally his teammates and always keep them pumped and ready. He is a fantastic candidate for all league and maybe even for MVP
Also, with all due respect to Eck, I do not feel he deserves MVP honors or even all league, he didnt do as much as some other players like Connor, Hagan, Novick etc etc

  48. Huh?

Okay, I missed it…who is LoHud?

  49. Biff

To Huh? LoHud Hockey is a blogger who has an incredible knowledge of hs hockey. The rules, the alignments, the history etc. Whenever the rest of us loser bloggers would debate an issue we knew nothing about, LoHud would provide some real facts. That's why we have named him the mvp of the blog. In fact he defeated section 10's head blogger and ran him out of town even if the town section 10 is now running to is Utica. As for whether LoHud changes his name next year, that is his call. he could do it and you might figure it's him, but maybe it will be someone else who goes to blogging camp in the off-season and reallt steps up his game next year. In any event, he basically provides facts and when he gives an opinion, he does it in a way that is not nasty to anyone. So he doesn't have to hide like some other nasty bloggers.

  50. LoHud Hockey

And that's the reason why as time goes on, people still don't know. You have lots of people who don't pay attention. Also, as kids graduate, they stop going on the blog (and so do their parents), while kids just entering HS or making the team and their parents start going on, and it starts all over again with a fresh crop of people who don't know who I am.

Aside form that, I really don't care whether or not people know who I am on here. If I did, I wouldn't have given postman, Biff, ID-11, Ramapo's Finest, and of course, Mrs. Biff so many clues. I was two posts away from giving out my social security number before they finally figured out which coach to ask!!! I have nothing to hide, I have no agenda, and I'm not on here bashing any players or teams, so why would I need to hide behind anonymity?

If I was a coach or player on here bashing another team or player and saying things I don't have the balls to say (translation: have some common sense and know better than to say) to the Journal News or Channel 12 reporters, an anonymous forum is great. If I was a parent of a kid who is a very good hockey player, but in the current crop of great players is not at the tippy top of the mountain, and I wanted to politic for him to win the MVP (Knowing full well that is a Journal News blog and Harold is obviously reading my posts), then an anonymous forum is great. And if I wanted to stir the s*** by coming on here and saying nasty things about a rival coach, team, or player just to get a rise out of someone, then an anonymous forum is great.

I am fairly certain all of these things are happening on here, and I'm sure all of the other regular bloggers have noticed the same thing, but none of them by me, so what do I have to hide? No need to change my name, and if I do, like you said, anyone on here from this year would recognize my posts right away.

  51. postman

I really don't think it would be hard to figure out if he changes his name. Who else can write an 8 paragraph essay on the Sleepy Hollow vs. Rye game on December 5th 1987 where an illegal change led to a high stick goal that was called off with 45 seconds to go in the 2nd period, while most of the rye team was still getting over football season and sleepy hollow was still looking for that infamous head of theirs??? I give him 2 posts under an alias, then we got him..

  52. LoHud Hockey

Actually, that game was on December 9th, not the 5th. Get your facts straight, postman!!!
    ;-)

  53. all county

  54. Not This Time

    all county,

Maybe cambria and urban for All County Honorable mention. But the others were not the top hockey players (this year) in the county.Question?:Why in the world you you have Jackson nominated for anything? Played maybe 3 games and was DQ'ed for just as many…...

  55. East of the river

To Sorry: I don't get your point at all. This blog would be a sorrier and far less intelligent and informed place without LoHud. He's the MVP for a reason. (and I really hope Harold can someone work that into his end of season awards/wrap up articles).

  56. fanotgame

First, congrats to TI on their comeback win over Rye.

Here is my take on the game. Rye skaters were quicker and more agile. Vikings more physical. The Rye quickness produced the 2 goal lead half way thru the game. TI really didn't get much pressure in the first 1/2. Most of their shots were from bad angles or from the outside. Rye could have had a few more, but Mr. Hall was spectacular. Rye had allowed only 3 goals combined during the whole playoffs to that point. And 2 of those 3 were scored very late in a game they led 5-0. So, the Garnets were poised to lock this one down.

Then Rye lost Rogers to a high ankle sprain. The kid just eats up ice time at both forward and D. Plays point on PP, kills penalties at forward and anchors a forward line that keeps the puck in the zone almost the entire shift due to his skating ability, ice vision and anticipation.

The team lost its composure for a 5 minute span late in the second and made a few mistakes in their zone that led to 3 quick ones for TI. Now, Rye was trailing for the first time in the playoffs and against a big, mobile goalie. They kept the puck in the TI zone for most of the third period and tried valiantly to score (Eck in particular), but Hall and his mates were up to the task.

Good luck Vikings at Utica. A hot goalie and hard skating can get you there.

  57. postman

LOL.. that is great!!! very funny.. and to EAST, I think that was a compliment, just not worded very well by "Sorry"

  58. ALL COUNTY?

There is no ALL COUNTY unless you mean the Journal News picks. Mamaroneck beat everyone so their top gun deserves the Player of the Year MVP. They should also get some picks as well. The next two best teams on this side are Rye and Pelham, followed by White Plains and RTH. The stats from White Plains players need to be properly weighted against the softer schedule. To be fair you cannot leave players out because of stats. For example Mamaroneck beat Rye, RTH twice. Therefore they have better players. My feeling is the teams that win deserve the awards.

  59. Rockland County All-County

    Should go something like this:

1st Team – has to be all Suffern. If you are going to take one out, they'll probably take out Hiller because he's a Junior and he'll be first team next year.

    F – Salt (Suffern)
    F – Ruthberg (Suffern)
    F – Hiller (Suffern)
    D – Conklin (Suffern)
    D – Ojeda (Suffern)
    G – Natoli (Suffern)

    2nd Team

    F – O'Conner (North Rockland)
    F – Hiller (Suffern)
    F – Shore (Suffern)
    D – Meany (North Rockland)
D – either Holewinksi (CS) or Williams (CN)
    G – McIndoe (CN)

  60. Rockland County All-County

whoops… on 2nd team above – i meant Hill, not Hiller.

  61. Pelham Hockey

Flory has to be somewhere on there.

  62. Pelham Hockey

I mean for Westchester of course.

  63. fantasy hockey

what if we took section 1 and made a team, heres my lineup:

1- Conner (MMK), King (IONA), Salt (SUF)
2- Encarnacao (WP), Hiller (SUF), Novick (RTH)
3- Sigona (WP), Eck (RYE), Ruthberg (SUF)
4- Dimaggio (YT), Datino (STEP), Cambria (IONA)

    1- Hagan (MMK), Ojeda (SUF)
    2- Conklin (SUF), McCabe (IONA)
    3- Kegan (RTH), Clay (PEL)

    1- Natoli (SUF)
    2- McIndoe (CN)

  64. ID-11

Being lohud is the man possibly you can send harold a topic of the week during the off season. Hockey never really ends why should the blog. Just a thought and who better to come up with some interesting off season stuff than Lohud.

  65. icehole

SKOL Vikings, I hope they play Led Zepplins Immigrant Song
during warm-ups in the next round.
Great job to rye and also mmk.

  66. LoHud Hockey

Nah. I like jumping in on topics more than I like starting them.

No matter who is starting the topics, about 90% of them are always the same (Pre-season favorites, who should get end of season honors, what leagues should teams be in next year, who would win in a Catholic School vs. Private School Royal Rumble, etc.).

That's not a knock on Harold's stories that start off each topic, those are usually different from one another, but after the frist 5-10 comments made by us readers, someone always posts something like "I think XXXXXXX should be the MVP and Team A should move up a league while Team B moves down next year" and the topic Harold started no longer has abything to do with it anymore. Look at how many times the heading has been a story about a Catholic School game and it deteriorates to a debate between Suffern, Mamk, WP, Pelham, & Rye and then all the Iona, Fordham, & Stepinac fans get upset.

  67. postman

Norwin from suffern has to be on the all rockland team, I would say 2nd team.

  68. Small "TWEAK"

    fantasy hockey,

I agree with choices except for defense. I would have

    McCabe and Ojeda
    Conklin and Hagan
    Kegan and Clay

Would have McCabe rated above all defensemen in Westchester/Rockland. During the Empire games, he was a force and played over Conklin and Ojeda.

  69. Next Year

Here are my top 4 rankings of teams for next year:

#1 – Mamaroneck – will miss Conner and Hagan, but return a strong team and apparently their JV and Modified teams were extremely good. Good program, they'll have no problem reloading.

#2 – Pelham – looks to be a very strong team, and may have the best Senior class in the Section – returns alot – Flory, Clay, Emerson, Durand, Duffy, Dzenis, etc.

#3 – Suffern – loses alot of Senior talent; will come back down to Earth from this year and will lose a few league games, probably to Mamo and Pelham. Strong 1st line on offense and defense, but the 2nd line is the big question mark on both O and D, as well as goaltending – how do you replace Natoli???.

#4 – Rye – will miss Eck and Rogers, but I've seen their Modified team and its pretty good.

    Other thoughts?

  70. To Next Year

Hagan is only a junior – so he will be back next year!

  71. Seasons Over

small tweak…...... tweak a little more as clay was moved to forward from defense and did real well.
next year …....... if all the pelham players who are eligible to return do so , they will be solid with mamone, flory, dzenis, emerson, rivera, clay?, and hernandez stepping up.

  72. Rye/Thousand Islands

    JN 3/2/08:

"But just as Rye (17-9-2)seemed poised to put the game out of reach, the momentum took a sudden, inexplicable turn."

Fanothegame provided the explanation above. The loss of Rogers to injury at the end of the first period was a big blow for Rye in that game. He is an all around terrific player on O & D. Had he been uninjured and able to play his regular shift, I think the outcome would have been different. But, as we all know, on any given day anything can happen. We wish him a quick recovery.

  73. Pelham

Just some comments to all. Dzenis is going to be a junior. I have a question for all of you posting all star or best players lists. Why is Emerson Flory Clay Mamone the top Pelham players not making anyones list? The team finished ahead of everyone in the first league other than Suffern and Mamaroneck and was the first seed throughout the sectionals. They swept everyone in league one except Rye who they split with and swept Rye/Harrison and Jay.The team was also bringing along a young goalie who had struggled although has seemed to turned the corner after a great few sectional games.

  74. fanotgame

    To Next year-

here is my list of contenders (including privates and CHSHL):

    1. Mamo- loaded even w/o Conner
    2. RCDS- All those sophs are jrs next year. Watch out.
    3. Pelham- Sec 1 D II favorites w/ that strong Jr (next yrs seniors) class
    4. Suffern- should be just fine, just not as dominant
    5. Rye- will miss all 5 seniors but have 2 very good goalies and a large core of travel players
    6. Iona- Has loads of top talent returning, but who is the goalie?
    7. Stepinac- See Iona comments above
    8. White Plains- Will be able to put together a strong first line. Goalie OK. Few good D men. Pretty solid team
    9. Fordham- This season was for rebuilding. Didn't lose as much to graduation as others. Next year they reap the benefits of playing those freshman tenders.
    10. New Roc- Solid goalie, some good travel players. Should play League 2
    11. Pac- Another young team that will be better next season.
    12. Yorktown- A strong goalie and a few gutty performers return
    13. Jay- They have a bunch of good skaters. Maybe this is their year to reach full potential
    14. ETB- See RCDS comments above. Only real differences (big ones) are goaltending and commitment to team.
    15. RTH- great story this year. Are devastated by graduation. Even worse if Urban goes prep.
    16. Brewster- The two super sophs will be jrs.
    17. Ossining- Have some snipers who can score in league 3. Can they do it against top competition?
    18. PWBV- Have a good HS goalie and a few good travel players. Can those players make others on the team better?

  75. Next Year!

Emerson Flory Clay Mamone are the top Pelham players, and they are good players but who on the list below are they better than. Good players but not as dominate as the players mentioned below. Next year they most likely will be the cream of the crop!

1- Conner (MMK), King (IONA), Salt (SUF)
2- Encarnacao (WP), Hiller (SUF), Novick (RTH)
3- Sigona (WP), Eck (RYE), Ruthberg (SUF)
4- Dimaggio (YT), Datino (STEP), Cambria (IONA)

    1- McCabe (IONA), Ojeda (SUF)
    2- Conklin (SUF), Hagan (MMK)
    3- Kegan (RTH), Clay (PEL)

    1- Natoli (SUF)
    2- McIndoe (CN)

  76. Go to the tape

Lancaster beat Monroe Woodbury 6-0 and apparently a huge brawl took place on the ice. Several of the Lancaster Players including the Starting Goaltender are suspended for at least Saturday. Anybody know more about this?

  77. rumors

I heard that the two top players on RCDS are leaving next year. They might not be as good as u think.

  78. just wonderings

when does the journal news announce the all league awards and honarable mentions

  79. heard that too not a rumor

Its a fact. Two players leaving, one is a great D man

  80. Lancaster - Not Surprised!

I heard that at last year's outbracket finale when North played Lancaster, the Lancaster players were totally unclassy and were "barking" at the North players as they were coming out of the lockerroom. Also, they were banging on the walls of North's lockeroom and shouting stuff so North's players could hear the taunts through the vents. So it doesn't surprise me that some of those players brawled on the ice against MW this year.

  81. postman

I kind of like the "barking" thing.. yelling through the vents is just strange..

  82. Hirsch44

Please help me with some history… (pre internet times)

Who won section 1 and/or went to the states from 95 – 2000? Anyone know?

  83. CN

And taht was after CN beat them

  84. RCDS rumors

    uh… who cares

  85. fiya

Which team(s) do you guys predict will be a surprise contender next year and which team(s) will be a disappointment?

  86. Harold Gutmann

The date hasn't been set for the all-star/all-county section, but last year it ran April 15, and in 2006 it ran April 9, so that should give some idea.

By the way, the Mamaroneck player who most impressed the Massena coaches was freshman defenseman Robbie Gardiner.

  87. Harold Gutmann

I heard two Lancaster players were suspended, but not the goalie, he just got a misconduct. Pretty dumb since the score was 6-0 at the time.

  88. Harold Gutmann

Last comment for today, here's the answer to Hirsch1
'95-'99 the DI/DII winners were Suffern and Mamaroneck
2000 it was Suffern and Pelham

Sorry for the lack of posts, I'm working on a hockey feature for tomorrow's paper. Also tomorrow, I'll post the Top 10 moments from the season.

  89. Holy Smoke

Gee I wonder what #1 will be?
Not a real brain buster as far as the biggest moment. Beating the #1 team and the #1 goalie in NY with 15 seconds and breaking the 45 game unbeaten streak AT sor nonetheless. I can't even imagine what #2 could be.
Mamaroneck has 2 freshman starters on D that are coming back, a seasoned outstanding goalie, 5 of their best 6 forwards, Sean Hagan arguably the best westchester defenseman, with D Adam Zweig who will be a senior. It will actually be Mamaorneck with all the pressure to win section 1 next year… not suffern who will have a lot of kids with very little varsity game experience. Not to mention Mamk JV players who dominated their competition going 16-1.
WOW, anything but a final 4 in the state birth is going to be a letdown after this year.

  90. outside

every year Suffern loses top seniors. The group that is graduating this year was very, very good but mr. Schelling has done a good job in developing his "farm system" and even if they are not as dominant quite sure they will be just fine.

  91. Mamo

Next year MAMK is stacked. Jackson, Fine, C Glaser, L Glaser, Sean Hagan, Scott Hagan,Zweig, Christiansen , Gardiner, J Naclerio, M Conner,...ect

  92. the KING

what about cody kings game three overtime game winner as the best moment

it ENDED a 3 game series, in overtime

  93. Rob Vizard

Suffern loses a lot of seniors this year but they will be perfectly fine next year. Over the weekend the Saints Midget AA team won a big playoff game with Gabriel filling in as goalie. Players from Suffern (Hiller, Hill, Mccarron, Norwin and Gabriel) and kids from north rockland (Meany and O'Conner) won a 3-2 game in which Gabriel made 20+ saves, Hiller, O'Conner and Hill made beautiful plays and Mccarron, Norwin and Meany played solid D. Suffern will be right there with Mamk next year even after losing all these great seniors.

  94. Get real

    Holy Smoke,

Hagan is a good player, but no way he's the best defensemen in the league. There are at least 4 defensemen better than Hagan!

  95. suffern

    Top Defensemen-

    1. Kevin Norwin
    2. Sean Hagan
    3. Greg McCarron

  96. To Vizard

thanks big guy, wanna get a hotel room with me?

  98. Rob Vizard

    1. Kevin Norwin
    2. Sean Hagan
    3. Greg McCarron

  100. To Vizard

Just get rid of those braces and your number one on my list ;)

  101. defensive hockey

    Rob Vizard,

I think i know who you are. Not so sure though. I heard about the Midget AA district run and that the players played outstanding, including gabriel.

  102. defensive hockey

you dont need to get those braces off to be number 1 on my list.

  103. Rob Vizard

You must have me mistaken for somebody else because I don't have braces.

On all those lists of top defenseman you're missing several people from many other teams like Pelham. The section loses most of its top forwards this year, but outside of Conklin, Ojeda, McCabe and Gordon..all the top dmen return.

  104. defensive hockey

no i am pretty sure you are who i am thinking of. What are your thoughts about Willows and Shuman returning to north next yr.

  105. midget aa

The midget AA team went 1-2 this weekend and was in every game but had trouble scoring goals. The 2 games they lost were to the #1 seed from NJ 2-0 and the #1 seed from DVHL 2-1. The game they won was against a #3 seed from DVHL. Hill was not at the game they won due to SAT's.

  106. To Vizard

well if you do not have braces then you are an imposter and need to come up with your own name. If it really is you, no need to hide the fact of braces. You will be cute again in years to come ;)

  107. To Vizard

Plus, won't the braces help cut through the meatballs because you know your the predecessor to the meatball devouring thrown. Or maybe you'll be the philly cheese steak man

  108. defensive hockey

DO NOT TALK TO ROB LIKE That. he is a nice looking young man and will always be cute. If you have problems with people, get off the blog

  109. To Vizard

Go play with your ugly dog defensive hockey

  110. defensive hockey

My dog will woop you and your dogs behind

  111. Rob Vizard

To Vizard, I had braces many years ago, however, now I'm in my 30's and no longer have them

    Defensive Hockey,
Thank you about your previous comments. I don't know much about Shuman but I hear Willows is returning.

Assuming he returns here are the top 5 forwards next yr:
    1. Willows
    2. Hiller
    3. Urban
    4. Hill
    5. O'Conner ….what's your thoughts defensive hockey?

  112. Rob Vizard

    To Vizard,
lol. If I'm following his foot steps, then I think you'll grow up to be a pretty crazy driver and get plenty of middle fingers.

  113. defensive hockey

same as you…maybe we can meet up at sutters one day like good old times after we played suffern at SOR.

  114. To Vizard

I'm going to beat your bottom next time i see you vizard. P.S. cut your hair. You look like a girl

  115. Rob Vizard

    to Vizard,
Ironically I got a haircut today. lol And Defensive Hockey has a pretty nasty dog so i wouldnt mess with him.

  116. To Vizard

This weekend. Lets see if i can drive to Antartica and back before you finish 1000000 philly cheese steaks. I will make it there in 4 hrs,but i'll lose because you'll be done and on seconds in 20 minutes

  117. To Vizard

when i said seconds i meant another plate of 10000000

  118. defensive hockey

yea just got a new rotty….. humongus

  119. defensive hockey

ha. i am pretty sure you can not drive to antartica in 4 hrs

  120. Rob Vizard

I'll also have a vanilla milk shake with that. And yes I'll wait the extra 5 minutes rather than getting a pathetic rasberry iced tea. And yes Defensive Hockey i'd love to meet at sutters one day but for now I'm sick of it.

  121. To Vizard

Congrats on the haircut big guy. P.S. i amd still going to beat your bottom

  122. defensive hockey

funny i have to get to work now.. bye

  123. To Vizard

If i didn't know any better, from that milkshake comment, i'd say your a rookie. Those cheese fries must have been hot while your milkshake was M.I.A while i was sipping my refreshing Iced tea. But knowing you, hot or cold, its all just food that your going to end up eating anyway.

  124. CN Next Year

League alignments are set for the Spring. So, IF, and a big IF, Willows and Shuman are returning to CN next year, they better let the coach know ASAP or else CN will be going to League 3 or 4. If both of them return next year, I say CN stays in League 1.

I mean could you imagine CN decides to go to League 3, or perhaps even League 4, THEN Willows and Shuman decide to come back? Can you imagine those guys playing against teams like Bryam Hills, Nyack, TZ, Carmel, etc.?!?!? It would be a playground for them every game. They could end up with like 150 points each! CN would be the most feared League 3 or League 4 team ever, and League 1 teams woiuld be terrified of playingn them in the playoffs.

Has anyone else heard the rumors that Willows and Shuman are coming back? can anyone confirm?

  125. To "To Vizard" and "Rob Vizard"

You both are really gay..i know who both of you are…"Rob Vizard" you are far from cute and "To Vizard" your dog might be the ugliest thing that walks the earth. Defensive Hockey also needs to get a haircut as does Rob Vizard and will get rookie hazed next year as will all the other rookies from this year because the seniors never did anything to you cocky chumps.

  126. Gaye$t meal?

I have to go with a Raspberry Ice Tea, Oriental Chicken Salad dressing on the side, and a key lime shooter with low-fat whipped cream!

    Any other g ay combos?

  127. To Vizard

The person who posted about my dog and Rob being ugly i am unsure of who you are. Maybe if your name was B1tch or Defensivesman i would recognize you. I can not seem to figure out who you are. P.S. hope the lacorsse checks you tried using work for lacrosse cause they certainly did not in Hockey. To Vizard out

  130. we could..

They are just trying to lighten up the blogs and end them with a laugh. it was a one hell of a time over the course of the season and i think its fine for it to end like this. If this is your life over the summer and the blogs never end for you then i guess your not in luck.

4- Chap…for all of those 'disputed' calls
3- TigerVet…for calling for suffern players suspensions when he knew nothing of 'the incident' only to learn that #21 and #87 got booted like Bob Knight
2- Harold Gutmann…eight six seven five, three oh nine
1- NY POST…this, too, is obvious

  132. Mamo

LOL a Rick Springfield joke above me.

  133. 2 teams still playing!

    We just having fun.

  134. LoHud Hockey

Shenmomma's not even on this blog (at least not under the name Shenmomma). Shenmomma is ALL OVER the Syracuse blog. There has to be some mention of Travel Team & East of the River on the list of awards on this site (if you are giving them out).

.. the season is over, we have covered MVP, all this, all that, a 100 times, as well as thoughts on next season. If a few want to have a little fun, go do something else. As for the top bloggers.. I am honored to be listed with TRUE HOCKEY GIANTS.. I thank you!!!

  137. East of the river

Thank you LoHud. I am also quite honored to be mentioned in your top bloggers list along with Travel Team.

Speaking of travel teams, Harold has a nice piece in the paper today on Midget travel teammates who compete on HS teams.

So here's a question I thought of as I read about the Mariners Midget Majors featured in the article. If King, Datino and McCabe (all White Plains residents) played for the Tigers; would they still be in League 2 ? :)

  138. West of the River

haha interesting point "E O T R" but, yes, they would remain in league 2, though each of their players would get a 'quality shift per game,' until the playoffs, when they'd again, fail to reach the section title game

  139. icehole

Interesting series about a 15 yr old kid on the USA Hockey team. For anyone interesred in the behind the scences. Trying to do my part to be in the company of Postie and Hudie.

  140. Get Real

I'm surprised they would allow Shulman to play after he turned his back on his High School team. And did NOTHING in Travel hockey. He'll shine when he's playing league 4

  141. fanotgame

I for one would like to see Willows skate in Section 1 next season. A dynamic player. He and McIndoe could keep North in league 2 , at least. I still think North needs more depth to be a League 1 contender. Even a player like Willows can't skate thru everyone. Shuman would help, but he is more of a role player.

  142. Travel Team

This is a great blog. Lots of really entertaining and informed regulars and back and forth banter.

That was a great article today on the kids on the Saints and Mariners. Ir really captures the hockey community. There are not many hockey rinks and the player pool is relatively small, so everyone knows someone, or knows someone who knows someone. Its truly amazing the number of posts we can generate. Look at some of the other sports blogs, and you'll notice that even with all their JN headlines and comprehensive coverage they don't generate much bloggng traffic. Hockey people are the committed!

On another matter, good job to the Mariners on their recent success at the Bantam to Midget levels. I had always thought that the Vipers and Brewster teams were the best in Westchester, but it looks like the Mariners are doing something right to attract the talent they are getting. Thats a heck of a Midget team they have assembled.

  143. fanotgame

The midget minor team for Mariners is also pretty decent. They are a Tier III team that split a 2 game series with Tier I Long islang Gulls this weekend and have only lost 3 games since Silver Sticks in early September amd play in States next weekend.

  144. O Please

Get Real your a joke! You have no idea what your writing about. We all wanted him back and from what we heard, SHUMAN, was going to play, but the CN coach wouldn't work with his travel conflicts! And we also heard he is NOT going back to CN, he is going to PREP, so I guess he must be doing something right! But you sit back at your computer, and play judge and jury, Change your name to Get A Life!

  145. Travel Team

    fanotgame….

What are the Mariners doing to attract that caliber of player? Word of mouth….are they exceedingly high school friendly? Only a couple of years ago these kids would've been on tier II Viper teams or tier I and II Brewster teams.

On that Mariners team, a team that has nothing but fun! Not only do you have Flory (Pel), Novick (RT/H), King (Iona), McCabe (Iona) and Datino (Stepinac), but you also have DiMario (Iona), Sartorious (Fox Lane), Keagan (RT/H), Alteri (W.Plains), Martenetti (NR)

  147. Biff

O Please, what prep school is Shuman going to?

  148. Agree

Why is it that the season is over, and the need to BASH players is still so desirable?

  149. fanotgame

To travel team- A combination of lots of recruiting (esp players in the CHSHL), strong coaching thru their relationship with Manhattanville's hockey team and being HS hockey friendly. No penalties for missing travel practice or games (even playoff games) for HS in season conflicts. The president works hard to schedule travel games that do not conflict with HS games/practices. I think they plan on having a Jr team in addition to their Midget Major and Minor teams next year. My guess is that the Jr team may not be so HS hockey friendly, though. That is pretty hard to accomplish.

  150. to biff

    perhaps fordham prep? HAHAH

  151. Travel Team

Thanks fanotgame…The Mariners are doing it the right way.

I don't know if I like the Juniors idea though. I think Juniors should be pretty selective and more elite skill. Juniors implies "getting' to the next level, D3 or D1, so it should be a bigger committment than midgets.

Unfortunately, to many junior teams are only more expensive midget teams.

  152. postman

there are bottom of the barrel teams in every division.. there are AAA teams that should be AA teams, AA teams that should be B teams etc.. but for the most part teams are in the right division.. so "most" Junior teams are really junior quality and not "more expensive midget teams". I went to a few of the junior saints games and the speed and ability of the kids playing were well above any midget team i watched. Although, at the silver sticks tourn. the top AAA teams would give many junior teams a run for their money. We can go on and on forever about the fact that there are a lot more teams in every division now a days, and the talent is watered down, but it is what it is. It gives a lot more kids a chance to play and strive to reach their goals, and that is a good thing.

  153. radar

    East of the river,

Datino is not a White Plain's resident.

As for an earlier blog that said Lancaster (vs MW) was responsible for the fights in their quarter-final game,it just isn't true. I was at the game, and it was MW players that started all the trouble. Lancaster players were dumb and didn't skate away, but it was MW that was classless.

  154. Travel Team

Well Westchester is a populous county and right now there is only the brewster junior team. So I guess there is room for another. The Mariner midget major team with all their all-stars could that be the basis of the junior team?

I just feel that true juniors would interfere with high school hockey. Right now there is a good thing with the Mariner-midget team and its very friendly high school rules. With all due respect to the NY Saints, and I know they are a new team, but has the high school friendly aspect of this team contributed to their not so great win-loss record. I just don't mean when the Suffern kids are missing, but recruiting wise. Would a serious Junior player join a team if he knows 5-6 kids will place high school over there junior team?

To differentiate from midgets, Juniors should require a deeper commitment, that most likely will interfere with HS (see the White Plains HS kid). Your goals are to get into prep school, D3 college (D1 is very rare for junior teams in this area), or high level D1 ACHA.

  155. postman

I think you have to remember this is junior B, I really don't have a problem with the whole HS, junior conflict at the Junior B level. In this area where HS hockey is much bigger then other areas i think its ok to be HS "friendly". If you are good enough you will get noticed and then it is a whole different ball game if you move up to junior A.

  156. Travel Team

Nearby junior B teams like the Applecore and Brewster what kind of high school conflict rules do they have?

  157. East of the river

radar: thanks. article in the paper said they were all White Plains residents. was just picking up on that.

Mariners had done a nice job building their program. They certainly have a good talent pool to pick from in Lower Westchester and if they maintain the HS friendly approach they should build on that success going forward.

In this area you really only have 4 programs (Brewster, Mariners, Vipers, Ramapo) to chose from for midgets. Maybe 5 if you include Polar Bears out of Newburgh. So competition gets tough and all of these teams start to get pretty good. Of course you can go to the Island as well, but we already know that the Gulls aren't HS friendly.

Juniors is very hard to be hs friendly due to the wider circle of travel required. Brewster Junior teams go as far as Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Virginia for 2 game weekend sets. So you are away for the entire weekend very often.

  158. Travel Team

I agree. Its difficult to run an ultra-high school friendly Junior program, even Jr. B, and maintain presumed Jr. level quality, i.e. lots of practice and off-ice, showcases, longer travel, playing other quality programs, et.al.

Perhaps Westchester could support one other Junior team, but after that you are just taking kids who are as well or better served playing midgets.

  159. JUNIORS / HS

Travel Team….Juniors is not HS friendly at all. Miss a Junior practice and you sit a game….miss a Junior game for a HS game….miss two games for Junior. Everyone says that the travel players don't care about their HS teams but that kid from WP…played his HS playoff game instead of his Junior game and was sat for both travel games on the last weekend of travel. Juniors is a big commitment and a lot of stress for a kid also playing HS.

  160. Travel Team

Good clarification on how many sucessful Jr. programs are run.

  161. Go to the tape

I heard they wouldn't even let the Clarkstown North Coach into the section final game as a spectator, LOL.

I'd have more respect for Lynch if he told Willows and Shuman to take a hike!

  162. TigerVet2

Your coach may not have to. I hear a few of the players are not going to play if they come back. That way, they can have all the ice time. No line changes…just one line. That would be pretty funny.

  163. Travel Team

No. You take them back. Thats the nature of the hockey's developmental system. Sometimes kids leave to play at a higher level. Thats what they have to do. It's rare but sometimes the kids also come back to HS.

Now I can't question each of those kids motives for leaving. But I'll assume the original goal of not playing or playing elsewhere was to better themselves for something beyond high school. If it didn't work out or plans change, so be it, they tried. No rule says they can't play HS.

  164. North Coach

    Go to the Tape,

You heard wrong I saw coach Lynch at the sectional final game. Also why would he not take back Willows, he made a decision on what he thought was best for his future and maybe (still rumors) it did not work out. I wonder if Suffern would of taken back the Daniel twins if they decided they wanted to come back?
    (In a second)

  165. postman

can you just imagine how good suffern would have been this year if the daniels didn't leave.. they are seniors this year correct?? But i guess you can say that about a lot of teams over the years.. I am far from a shoulda, coulda, woulda guy.. but it is still interesting to think about.

  166. Travel Team

I know many instances of kids who transferred to private schools for their junior or senior season. The unspoken reason is that the public school program is weak or prospects look dim. Rarely is it publicly questioned.

What these kids did is only a slight variation of that.

  167. Willows

i highly doubt Willows failed to better himself. The kid scored 3 or 4 goals a game in Prep School this year and was the player of the week one week. He's clearly THAT good, but maybe if he comes back to public school, he has other reasons. Maybe he just didn't like the whole Prep school atmosphere it terms of classes, classmates, etc. Maybe he missed his friends and was homesick, who knows. But its clear that Willows belongs with the elite as he had a great year in Prep. So if he comes back to Clarkstown next year, it will be because of another reason other than hockey.

  168. Go to the tape

The Daniels Twins would have graduated Suffern High School in 2007. When they went to prep school they repeated their junior year.

Last year, however, they would have made a huge difference in that Ithaca game no doubt!

  169. viper bias

the mariner 18 and under team is a group of AAA players who dont want the AAA commitment. However, the vipers stacked the 16UAA team which weakened their 18U team. The 16 and under team has states in Saratoga in 2 weeks. most of the kids have been with the program for years, but the mariners are a one year wonder.

  170. Holy Smoke

It was a rare year where you had a great offensive player like conner playing in his senior year, and not playing any junior hockey the last two years. Goes to show you can still be the best player and not have to play juniors. And also Natoli, one of the best goalies in section 1 history and he chose (I am not sure if he had options) to stay and play his senior year. Does anyone know what Natoli is doing next year? Or if he had opportunities to go elsewhere this year? I am guessing he stayed because he thought suffern would win states this year.
I am pretty sure conner is not going to try and play hockey at any college level. Kind of like that Scarsdale kid who led the league in scoring, he did not want to play after high school either? What was his name? I just remember hearing he was like a borderline genius and wanted to be a doctor and knew that hockey was not his future.

  171. SRM

Its all about competing in the end nobody from section 1 is going to the NHL its a big hockey world out there.

  172. new ro

what if Shattenkirk stayed in New Rochelle. And if it is any consolation to Rui, WP would have lost to NR in round one and he would be the new Alex Hagan. He had about 10 scoring chances and set up Sigona for about 5 more, even with only 3 goals between, NR freshman Richie Prunesti had 4 goals and an assist.

  173. Travel Team

One year wonder? Mariners have strong teams at midget-major, minor and Bantam A.

  174. fanotgame

Agree with Travel Team. The stacked Major team is full of kids who started as Mariners, went to Brewster and came back. The successful Minor and Bantam teams also have a bunch of players who have skated with the Mariners for many years. The Pee Wee team (full of long time Mariners) also did very well this year, losing in the league finals. The program did get a big boost a few years back when a talent rich but under managed Yonkers program was folded into the Mariner organization. And the Mariner president works as hard as anyone to provide a program that works for many skaters.

  175. No Way!

    new ro,

Shattenkirk would of gone to Iona Prep like his older brothers.

  176. Smell the Coffee!

    Hey viper bias,

There's a reason why the TOP Players from the Mariners would not play for the Vipers!!! The coaching sucks…. Also heard there are a number of players on this year Vipers team (Midget Minor) that will be joining the Mariners next year. Why because the coaching sucks! LOL

  177. Smell the Coffee!

    Hey viper bias,

You know why these top players play for the Mariners?

Because they have better coaching then the Vipers. And guess what, a number of the players who play for the Vipers Midget minor team this year will be on the Mariners next year because they don't want to play for the Midget Major Viper coach….... How funny is that!

  178. Finished!

    Holy Smoke,

Conner and Natoli like many of this years seniors are done with Hockey! Unless they play club hockey somewhere…. D1 is not even an option….......

  179. Finished!

    Holy Smoke,

The players name was Gilter. He was a good player but NOTHING SPECIAL! When he played Juniors he QUIT because he got his BUTT KICKED and he could no longer hang out by the Red line! Couldn't score in Juniors!!!!!!!!

  180. Bitter Party of one!

    Viper Bias:

Next season awaits you. The Mariners had 4 teams in the league finals: Peewee A-Bantam A-Midget Minor-Midget Major.

The last 3 teams won the championships and are #1 seeds at the states.

The bantam team has won the league two years in a row. Minors undefeated this year in league play. The majors are mainly off to college. Only Flory-Alteri-Martignetti stay. Spots open there for new players.

That's more than a one year wonder my friend. that is a major build.

Tryouts in April, what are you waiting for?

  181. Wondering

    viper bias,

"However, the vipers stacked the 16UAA team which weakened their 18U team. The 16 and under team has states in Saratoga in 2 weeks. most of the kids have been with the program for years, but the mariners are a one year wonder"

Was that stacked 16UAA team you're talking about the same one that was beaten by the Mariners Midget Minors in the finals 2 weeks ago? One year wonders on that team were last year's Bantam champs and will be moving up to Majors next year. The only wonder is next year when you're left wondering where your best players are!

  182. goalie

I wouldn't say that "finished" Natoli has a shot at D1 and can play D3 without question. He was contacted by several prep schools and chose to stay at suffern. You really don't know what you are talking about.

  183. Hockey Fan

Natoli is definitely not finished. I believe he will be playing Junior A somewhere next year or atleast trying to play it somewhere. After that he'll probably wind up playing D3 somewhere with a slim chance of D1.

  184. No Way!

    Hockey Fan,

Natoli, is good but D1 is definitely not going to happen. In junior B's this year, he had an OK season. Reagan was rated higher and he's a just OK goalie also.

  185. Wow

Good luck to all the Seniors as they go off to college. I hope you continue to play hockey at whatever level you can if you want. Who are we to say anything about your talent or ability. Remember relax it's just a game.

Natoli-Reagan andall have fun. Play as long as you like and remember Men league is waiting for you if you want.

  186. SLAPSHOT

    Wondering:
No the Vipers 16U AA did not play the Mariners.
As for the Mariners Major team do you think it's
right playing T1 one year droping down to T3.
Kids don't lose their talent that quick.
It's not fair that kids did that.
Must have found a loop hole in the system.
Kids usually move up not down.

  187. From Juniors To Tier 3

I agree with much of what Slapshot has said. Btw, that all star super duper team which is one of only four real midget teams in the area, lost to the Capitals once by a goal, beat them once by a goal, and beat them in the league semifinals. So there are more than one option for Midgets. Capitals beat Mariners last year as well at U16 to be the top seed for States. And I understand that 'we just want to have fun' but bringing Junior players down to Tier 3 league just to win and go to states is somewhat lame. They could have done what many of the top players have down in the past and played LI Edge which plays many games out of Westchester at the LI Tier 2 level but they would have had to play the Freeport Arrows who beat them 7-0 this week after the Arrows were beaten 5-4 the day before by the Capitals. So super duper all stars who can't seem to stop talking about themselves and how much FUN they are having being super dooper all stars, there are other midget teams to play on in the area who actually have players who played all through the system and were not recruited in for one year. Hey, its over, but just getting my last two cents in. Vipers kids have been pretty much the same team for the past four years since we have played them, and played them tough, losing a bit more than winning but always great games. Mariners games were great last year, and somehow we stayed competitive with them this year with our not so super dooper stars from TZ, Nyack, South, North, NR, St. Joes, Tenafly and Suffern. Two one goal games that were split, and a loss in the semi's. Ya needs ta get over yourselves, soon. If the Arrows destroyed you like that, you are cooked for the States. They are an awesome team but 7-0? Good luck.

  188. Wow

    Hey Juniors to Tier III.

Guess you got a lot to write late at night about the Mariners losing a exhibition game afte a long Saturday night. Seems you aren't going to the states and are a little pissed about it.

    See you next year.

  189. Give It A Rest

Recruited by the Mariners? That's funny – yeah, my signing bonus is almost gone and I'll make this fast because my limo's waiting for me. Let's try this one more time: We left junior or tier 1 programs because it gets pretty old driving to Virginia or Pittsburgh every other weekend. We like to play hockey. We wanted to play together. We wanted good coaching. We didn't care what Tier it was. We wanted to be able to play high school and travel. We wanted good coaching – oh, did I say that before. Mariners gave us everything we wanted. We win. We lose. We play travel, we play high school. We like our coaches. Get over it.

  190. Plug!

atoli will nto go D1 and if he does he will never leve the bench…even at the D3 level he will have a very slim chance of playing D3 or Junior A…its just getting that good! and im sorry but tommy just is not quick enough for that

  191. Other Plug!

And Reagan doesn't have the head.

  192. Travel Team

    The Yonkers Kings!

I am referring to an earlier post that says they folded and many ended up with the Mariners.

I often wonder what happened to the Yonkers Kings. They had some good, tough teams. I remember 5 or 6 years ago some of the battles that they would have with the Vipers at pee wee and bantam levels. I liked there uniforms too, classic purple and gold.

  193. fanotgame

Who cares if the graduating Section 1 players make college varsity rosters and play? If a few do, thats just gravy. We are at a point where D III college hockey coaches recruit in Europe for god's sake. These graduating seniors were a lot of fun to watch on the ice and talk about on this blog. Their younger teammates deify them. The playoff games were for the most part close, hard fought matches. The winners were elated and the losers and their passionate fans were devastated. The players will remember the battles and the rivalries and their teammates their whole lives. Playing meaningful playoff games in front of packed houses where fans were actually turned away. This HS hockey thing (however it stacks up on a national or international level in terms of talent) is a great thing. I for one wouldn't trade my Hutch seat at the Section 1 D II final for club level seats at a Ranger game 7 Stanley Cup game.

  194. postman

I really don't think anyone knows anything about how good one needs to be to play in college. Natolie without question has a shot at playing D1, maybe not at a school like michigan, clarkson etc.. but I think many D1 schools will give him a look in a year or 2. And how can anyone say that he only had an "OK" season on the jr team?? He is in the top 4 or so in save %, started the all star game (by the way Reagan was an alternate for the all star game) was the only goalie mentioned in the article on the all star game, he was honored at MSG during a ranger game as being the player of the month, he was invited to practice with the NJ Hitmen (a very good Junior A team), he was also invited to play in canade this summer, he chose to stay at suffern instead of going to a prep school.. so unless you are just writing out your a$$ and being stupid, you have no idea what you are talking about… and, to tommy and family "you are welcome" for the plug.. As for conner, he also has more then a good shot at playing D3, if he wants to and takes the correct route. Jr's for a year or 2 then go as a 19 or 20 year old freshman. Wynne made his D3 team as an 18 year old walk on, (A GREAT ACCOMPLISHMENT!!!) that being said, if Natoli and Conner take the correct route I think many will be suprised at how far they can go. Is it easy to play in college? NO, but don't make it out to be the greatest accomplishment in the world.

  195. SRM

Question in all the years of section 1 hockey does anybody know anyone who has made it to the NHL.

  196. postman

oh and by the way I know it is Natoli not Natolie..

I think one of the Haggertey's from Rye made it back in the 80's, but I'm not 100% sure. Aside from him, I don't believe so.

There have been a few to make it to the minors and at least two that I can think of off the top of my head that played pro over in Europe for a little bit back in the 90's.

  198. Hockey East

According to a Hockey East report a few months back, the article said to look for the Daniels twins as mid round draft picks this April
