How does Conklin D from Suffern not make Second Team? Not even honorable mention? That makes no sense. Conklin had 31 assists. Oj had 14. That makes absolutely no sense. None.
There's alot more to the position than scoring points, especially on a team like Suffern who has won Section and Regional Titles in the past because of defensive play. Wynne was probably the best example.
Kudos to all the Section 1 players on the All-State list. I too was a little surprised Conklin didn't appear on that list given the fact he had good stats for a defensemen (4 goals, 31 assists). I'm surprised Ruthberg isn't at least on Honorable Mention as well.
GREAT to see Chris McIndoe get on the Honorable Mention list. KUDOS CHRIS!!!!
How does Rodgers make second team DEFENSE when he was a FORWARD! Were they paying attention??
Eight Section 1 players getting All State honors. Pretty impressive for the downstate boys. Nice to see McIndoe get recognition on a rebuilding team. He and Mamo's Hagan still have another year of HS hockey. As for Connor, the 3 Suffern and 2 Rye players: thanks for the memories. Good luck in college. Your teammates have big pairs of skates to fill.
there is more to playing hockey and especially playing defense then a slap shot from the point. So it makes a lot of sense. A lot.
To Explain- If you watched Rye this year, Rogers played both forward and defense positions. He was all over the ice all the time. Might be the best player in the Section. Probably the best skater. Just had to help out wherever the coach asked him to. If you are a true HS hockey fan, you should appreciate that.
fanotgame,
Best player in the section? Stop drinking the Kool-aid. At least 15 players in the section that are ALOT BETTER HOCKEY PLAYERS AND MUCH BETTER SKATERS…...
To No Way. I only see 6 Section 1 skaters on the all state list. That's a lot less than 15.
Fanotgame,
Definitely agree with No Way, to say that he is the top skater in the section is "NUTS".
Whayt about the following players:Sigona, Rui, Connor, King, Eck, Salt, Ruthberg, Novick, Urban, Datino, Morasco, Hill, Keagan, McCabe, Dimaggio, Molinaro, etc….....I can go on if you want.?
And Explain how a forward all of a sudden becomes a defensemen.
CONGRATS TO ALL SECTION I PLAYERS GETTING HONORS AND BEST OF LUCK IN COLLEGE
WOW fanotgame, you are taking a little beating today. I like the list and really like Ojeda on at 2nd team.. well deserved and it is nice to see that the coaches aren't looking at points for defensemen. congrats to all!!!
fanotgame, top skater in the section ????? Also,
How about Hiller, Burdick, Alfonzetti, Oliverio, Halpin, Cambria, Prunesti and McCarrick…........ List is now up to 24 better skaters!
Amazing story from the state of Michigan..
http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080309/SPORTS09/803090714/1048/SPORTS
Also, if anyone is dying to see the ice one more time, the CHSHL B Division's Game 3 championship game is in Mt. Vernon tomorrow (Tuesday) at 6:45, Archbishop Molloy (Queens) vs. Xavier (Manhattan). Both schools are pretty decent.
Well deserved recognition for Ojeda. Defense wins Championships….and Ojeda is just that kind of Defenseman.
i'm not going to agree with Fanotgame that rogers is THE BEST but he is up there, and he is a better skater than Hiller, Burdick, Alfonzetti, Oliverio, Halpin, Cambria, Prunesti and McCarrick
Glad to see the decision makers for all state are not influenced by this blog. Marshall Rogers is a terrific, all around, unselfish player and difference maker. He deserves his spot on the list.
All I know is that in the state quarter game vs. Thousand Islands, Rye's forward who made all state (Eck) scored 2 goals to give the Garnets a 2 goal lead. Rye was in complete control. Rogers playing both forward and D. He sprains his ankle. Within minutes the score is 4-2 TI. Marshall is the real deal. Is peerless in his anticipation of the play. Can settle down any bad situation on the ice. When at forward, the puck rarely left the offensive zone all season on his shift. On defense, no one gets around him. Plays the point on the PP and leads the PK. Can skate forever with his efficient stride. At the Suffern game ar SOR, he was clearly the best skater on the ice. When Rye skated vs. Suffern later in the season, he was double teamed every time the puck went near him. Someone on Suffern noticed him the first game. Yes, there are lots of good kids in Section 1 that could have recieved this honor. Be happy that Rogers brought home the award for the Section. It was not a fluke.
This is not a criticism of anyone who was selected BUT please look at Conklin's stats, as well as what he meant to Suffern this year. NO, I am NOT his dad, :). He had 31 Assists, so would the Suffern forwards have nearly as many points as they got if not for Conklin's passes, shots on net which Suffern scored on rebounds, or deflections on his shot from the point which was incredibly on target all year long. No, they wouldn't have scored all those goals nor won all those games. He was the quarterback of their offense and played a very strong D. Upstate, vs. Canton, a game where Suffern was clearly outclassing Canton, the game turned when the coach sat Conklin (deservedly) for the 2nd half of the game. It was a totally different game from then on.There were many games where the opposing team was focussed on stopping him from shooting, that is how big a weapon he was. If an opposing team had the choice of removing one skater off the ice this year, my guess is that it would have been him. He got the short end of this stick, but knowing him, he will just move on. Classy kid on and off the ice.
Looks like there will need to be a new political note speaker at the opening ceremonies this year.
Hey Harold, I know you're not crazy about the number of times your picture appears on this thing, but unless Dan Kiernan quit his new job after only 6 months, came back to the Journal News, and ousted you as the hockey guy to reclaim his spot, I think there's a bug in the program. The "About the Author" section has Dan's picture & bio instead of yours.
suffernstates
01 Gael: Thanks for the link on the Michigan story. What a fantastic photograph !!!!!!!!!
Maybe those other defenseman from upstate on the list were just as good or better than Conklin. Maybe they meant the same, or more, to their team than he did. Does anyone know anything about the other D's from upstate that were picked?
Suffernstates..you act like without Conklin the fowards would have been doomed. If i am not mistaken 1 foward had 1/3 of Sufferns assisst and 13 more then conklin. But clearly no one cares about assist so you probably do not know who i am talking about. And to your quarterback comment, yes of the defense but not of the overall offense.Don't get me wrong, i truly believe he and Ojeda both deserved the nomination and are both excellent defenseman and were a main component of Suffern's team. Congrats to the section one players nominated.
in regard to suffernstates:Conklin mainly passed to one other forward who usually passed back to him and neither were named!!!
Well…What you mean is that Conklin took control of the puck and made a tape to tape pass out of the zone. That created a scoring opportunity for his team. That is how he got those assists. I guess it would have been better if he had just focused on hammering the man with the puck. Then Conklin would have have created far fewer scoring opportunites for his team. Maybe that would have got him at least honorable mention.
well being that he did not get it for what he did, maybe he should have tried your method oldschool lol. i agree with him creating offense i just dont think it was right to say he created most of Suffern's goals.
Okay. I will settle who is who's Dad. Going back over the posts, Ojeda is mentioned first in 45 threads that start…Who do you think are the best in L1? Here are my picks. Conklin is only mentioned in 23 of those. There you are. Those are the numbers.
That being said, Ojeda impressed me. Not to take away from Conklin's stats and hard work during the season. I like Ojeda's style of D.
To Well—- If it came across i thought he created MOST of Suffern's goals, that was not what i intended nor what i believe. I watched most of Suffern's games this year and saw how important he was to the offense, and defense. A DMan creating that much offense while logging the most minutes on D deserves more recognition. Nobody has to defend their kid or attack other kids on the team because someone thinks another player did not get the recognition that he should have. Teams did altered their defense to get a wing to cover the point when he was out there.
Old School—-You phrased it really well.
I do think if you took one player out of the lineup that would hurt Suffern the most after Natoli, it would be him. I guess that was the point i wanted to make. The Canton game is one good measure. And you don't have to be someone's dad, to speak up for a player who deserved more recognition. Point made, moving on. Congratulations to all the Section One players who were acknowledged. Conner and Natoli both had amazing years.
marshall rogers is one of the top skaters in the section. if you havent played with him on rye or the vipers, you wouldnt get it cuz he plays all over the ice and is not playing on mammo or suffern. rogers makes the game seem easy.
Conklin definitely deserved all state recognition and the post about him and another player passing back and forth was unneccessary. He should not get mentioned with those plays because it was not his fault. Bringing up the Canton game furthers that it was not his fault because i believe he was bench for yelling that that player did the same play repeatedly and he just had to scream. Suffernstates i am sorry if you missed interpreted my comment, i think conklin was the msot important player to suffern's team as a whole and was certainly not trying degrade his offensive play.
and yes oldschool what you said was certainly correct and my fault for not presenting it the way you did. tough day with the stock market sorry for the way my first post sounded
Suffernstates if you know suffern hockey then you will know who i am. I feel bad for my former teammate and think that he certainly deserved an all state nomination. I loved winning the puck back to him and i was always confident that he would get a quick shot off (also get me some assist lol). This is my first (serious) and last (serious) blog post. Just felt it was necessary for me to give my teammeate credit where it is deserved. Hope everyone that was a fan this year will be back again next year.
and Oj..you know you obvs deserve your award..keep it real homie..its been good
Perhaps some of the committee members saw the last 30 seconds of the Suffern Mamaroneck Section Final?
They did. That is why the player from Mamaroneck impressed them. They won the game.
Conklin had a great season. His shot from the point led to 32 goals and found the net 4 times. These are the kind of numbers rarely seen by a Suffern defenseman.
But Suffern's game revolved around defensive play from Natoli on out. And, it was that defensive play that got them to Utica two years in a row and to the Section Final this year. And Conklin was a big part of that.
Unfortunately for Conklin in the Section Final against Mamaroneck, that mental lapse letting Connor behind him leading to a 3 on 1 with 16 seconds left, perhaps cost Suffern the Section and their shot at a State Championship.
Congrat's to the players nominated. Listen it's not worth trying to figure out how they picked the players. Some are deserved and some you question. But, to be honest with you the two best defensemen in Westchester/Rockland counties weren't even considered. Because one plays for the Hitmen and the other plays in the CHSHL. So unless you're part of the final 4 in League 1 and 2 you stand no chance of getting nominated. Stay Calm and enjoy.
This is how it was for all 4 yrs with him on D, everyone keeps mentioning how many points Conklin had ,but the real question is how many D-fensive plays did he make in that time, really not many.If you saw all the big goals against Suffern the last 3 yrs you can bet he was on for all of them while trying to do something his ability would not let him.
Conrats to Ojeda who may not have had as many points but was huge on D and his last 2 yrs on O,pretty tough to do both regularly.
"That mental lapse letting Connor behind him leading to a 3 on 1 with 16 seconds left, perhaps cost Suffern the Section and their shot at a State Championship." First of all a mental lapse is not what caused the 3 on 1. Secondly, you cannot expect to beat a team like Mamaroneck scoring 1 power play goal in three periods. Mamaroneck outplayed Suffern on that night – that's why they won.
Listen you all need to grow up and stop blaming kids and saying their names. It appears that although your team is very together the parents are not. Geez…get a life.
"Listen you all need to grow up and stop blaming kids and saying their names. It appears that although your team is very together the parents are not. Geez…get a life.'
This door was opened by the person complaining that Conklin DIDN'T get named to an All State Team. The discussion ensued.
Stop Complaining,
You mention two Defensemen? Who are they? Is one Himelson?
I think Stop Complaining is referring to Iona's McCabe and Fordham's Clare. Himelson is Section 9 material (MW), I think. Had he played HS hockey, there is no doubt he would be all state. Clare didn't play HS hockey this year either. He played Hitmen with Himelson. If he did, he would have been the best D in Section 1 (as a sophomore), I agree. But since he has elected not to play HS hockey, why include him in the discussion? Should we also consider local resident Kevin Tuoy (a jr at Shattuck St Mary's in Minnesota) when discussing forwards? I think not. Regarding McCabe – played well on Empires and logged major minuted for Iona this season. With Hagan and Rogers making all state, McCabe probably would have also had he gone to public school.
fanotgame,
I was talking about Clare and McCabe. I forgot about Himelson. In my opinion those three players are the top Defensemen around this area. Followed by Conklin, Hagen and Ojeda.
#1 Himelson
#2 McCabe
#3 Clare
#4 Conklin
#5 Hagan
#6 Ojeda.
Conklin's dad needs to get over this. Stop embarrasing your son and just keep quiet.
Stop Complaining- I see it a bit differently. If we include Section 9's Himelson, my list goes:
Himelson
Clare
Rogers
Ojeda
McCabe
Keegan
Hagen
Conklin
Suffern Parents
Dont think for 1 minute that this team was as tight a group as you think. (THIS IS FACT)
Again, points do not make you a good DEFENSEMEN
Did Cody King of Iona Prep have any chance of making the all state/ all tourney team? Is he a top player in the league?
Thanks
fanotgame,
I agree with your list but in my opinion, Rogers should be a forward. That's what he played this year so he really can't be grouped with the others. He might be a good skater but not a true defensemen.
If you're looking at TRUE Defensemen, you have Himelson, McCabe and Clare. They are definitely the top three in the area "HANDS DOWN"! And you can't have Ojeda rated over McCabe. Last year Ojeda barely saw the ice in the Empire Games. McCabe and Himelson were never off the ice. Defefinitely rated #1 and #2.
Question?? Thanks,
The Catholic School is given a TOKEN player every year. Even though they might have some of the top players in the state playing like Reagan, King, McCabe, they will only have one selection. Last year it was a kid from St. Joes name Famia this year it was another player from St. Joe's.
fanotgame,
Stop Complaining is right. Rogers played forward, he didn't play defense. Everyone knows this…....
All State and All Tourney was for NYSPHSAA (read Public School) state play and state championships. Iona plays in CHSHL (Catholoic league) which does not participate in the Public School playoffs. I think Iona (and Fordham and Stepinac) players will be eligible for the Journal News all county teams. Players from those 3 Catholic schools would be placed on the Westchester/Putnam/Dutchess (East of River) team. The East of River team will be dificult to make, as most of the top teams resided East of the River this past season. Suffern players will fill most slots on the Rockland (West of River) team. The Catholic school players will not make any of the Section 1 "All League" teams either, as those Catholics don't play in Public School Section 1. The CHSHL may have its own "All league" selections.
To once a year- The St Joe's guys are eligible for all state because they play in the public league up in Buffalo. They even participate in the Section 6 playoffs. They just don't represent Section 6 in the public state champs. If Iona and Fordham and Step did the same thing in Section 1, their skaters would get "All State" consideration. Wouldn't that be neat to have those 3 Catholics integrated in Section 1's league 1. What a great league that would be. Just think -this year there would have been home and home matches among:
Suffern
Mamo
Rye
Pelham
Iona
Step
RTH
Jay
Fordham
The Catholics could have avoided the 6 meaningless games against Chaminade and St Edmunds.
when did section 1 kids start making the all-state team? I remember in the late 90's it was never really even considered a possibility
Conner lit up the best goalie in the state 5 times this year, and he does not get first team all state?
Stop complaining
You cant even put McCabe in the same catergory as Himelson and as far as Ojeda not getting much ice at Empires, this had to do with who the coaches were and where they coached travel.
This is fact,I know first hand.
Stop Complaining
Where would you have put C.Wynne from Suffern in the mix with McCabe,Himelson, and Clare who I dont really know,He did go to a D3 school and made the team as a walk on at 18
The Truth,
Good question?
I think Wynne was one of the best defensemen I have seen in years. Definitely RATED number 1.
My Rankings
#4 Clare: Overall he might be the highest rated Defensemen in our Area in the next year. Had a good year for the Hitmen, Needs another year to really break out. Has speed, size and hockey skills to go D1. Time will tell. He needs what Wynne had and that's have the forwards fear him because they know that they are going to get HIT and Hit hard.
To Stop Complaining- All these guys we are talking about are players I would love to have on the team I follow. Regarding the ones who actually played HS hockey in the area, I picked Rogers and Ojeda over McCabe simply because they skate a little better and are unparalled in their anticipation of the play. McCabe is a physical presence who never panics with the puck and can log a lot of ice time. But, if my team is protecting a 1 goal lead late in the game against a forward line comprised of lets say the 3 sniper/danglers that scored the 3 championship game winning goals (Conner, King, Eck), I would counter on D with Rogers and Ojeda. Not the physical presences of McCabe or Keegan, but they skate so well, are so strong on the puck, manage the gap perfectly, anticipate the play like no others, can break the puck out on their own and never ever get beat wide.
Now, if I were coaching a team that was down a goal late in the game, I might want either Hagen or Conklin out there to let loose a few blue line bombs.
Wynne was the best pure defenseman and a real leader on the 2006-2007 Suffern Team. Offensively he was very much held back by the coaches. They wanted him concentrating on defense only and if he were going to make a mistake, they wanted it to be on the side of being too cautious. That was the philosophy the previous year with Yorke as well and it got Suffern to Utica twice. Not many Suffern fans are going to forget the Ithaca game, one of the greatest defensive battles in NYSPHSAA history.
"...But, if my team is protecting a 1 goal lead late in the game against a forward line comprised of lets say the 3 sniper/danglers that scored the 3 championship game winning goals (Conner, King, Eck), I would counter on D with Rogers and Ojeda…"
"...Now, if I were coaching a team that was down a goal late in the game, I might want either Hagen or Conklin out there to let loose a few blue line bombs."
Fanotgame,
You left out: Who would you have out there in a Championship game tied 1-1?
fanotgame,
I guess this is why we have the Blog. See a McCabe is a bigger Defensemen who can skate and who controls the flow of the game just like a Wynne. Rogers can't do that! As mentioned before, McCabe played during the Empire games versus others that you have mentioned did not.Question? If you have the puck in the corner, who's coming out with it? Rogers or McCabe? McCabe of Course, if you have the Puck in the corner, who's coming out with the puck? Conklin or Rogers? Conklin right! Why, because Rogers is small.
Plus the fact, Rogers didn't play defense this year so you really can't have him in this discussion. If you're rating defensemen because of speed, then your Connor's, King's and Salt's would be the best defensemen out there! But we know tht's not true.
If Rogers did play defense this year, I think he would probably be rated 7 or 8. But that's my opinion.
"...if you have the Puck in the corner, who’s coming out with the puck? Conklin or Rogers? Conklin right! Why, because Rogers is small."
That statement makes no sense.
My money would be on Ojeda to come out with the puck against any other high school defenseman…..and he's relatively small.
I agree with question for fano. Size doesn't really matter that much along the boards. Its more footwork, strength and agility. My bet is on either Rogers or Ojeda over McCabe along the boards. The Rogers vs. Ojeda along the boards match would be a good one, though.
I would not agree that size doesn't matter.. take a good big man vs. a good small man and the big guy will win everytime. Does that mean that a small guy can't beat a big guy NO.. but all things being equal i take the big guy everytime.
fanotgame,
True defensemen like Conklin, Ojeda and McCabe would come out of the corner evertime versus a Rogers. They are stronger and more powerful that a Rogers. And skate just as well. Rogers is good but not a True Defensemen! Anyway, didn't he play as a forward this year.
It's time to get off of the blog.
To even think that a Rogers can match up with a Clare, McCabe, Ojeda, Conklin, Keagan, Hagan is funny. He might be able to skate, but so can the others. But the others have a slap shot, are bigger and are dominate on the ice. If a coach was to pick a true defensemen for their team, I don't think it would be Rogers. He's good but I really think he should be a FORWARD. Sorry to say this, but That's what he played this year and I think the Rye Coach made the right decision.
Stop Complaining
Real good stuff, great analysis, appreciate your answer
While Clare and M Cabe are great D men, the All State Team is for Public School players only, so to discuss it is dumb. For all the public players unhappy with the selections talk to your coach as many of the public school coaches do not sign up for the coaches association, if they were signed up they would be able to vote and nominate
Hey Draino says,
Please refer to blog message below. Initial discussion was about Wynne,Clare,Himelson and McCAbe. Were not talking about "JUST" Public School players. Then fanotgame said that Rogers should be in the equation with Ojeda. And then more discussion took place. WE were NOT talking about ALL State. Don't really care! We were talking about true Defensemen and how they would match up against a Wynne.
It actually was good "BLOGGING".

Stop Complaining
Where would you have put C.Wynne from Suffern in the mix with McCabe,Himelson, and Clare who I dont really know,He did go to a D3 school and made the team as a walk on at 18
Hey fanotgame,
First of all, I appreciate your thoughts on many of the topics in ths BLOG. But I have to say that you're to close to Rye. Sometimes you have blinders on. I have seen many of the teams play this year and I have a good sense how to judge a Defensemen. Top defensemen in the area has to be McCabe, Ojeda, Conklin and Hagan. I have to agree with a number of the bloggers above that McCabe should be rated right behind a Himelson. Rogers is good but not on the same level as the players mentioned above. As the Rye Connection said, he played forward this year so why is he even being discussed at this time?
Maybe if Rogers played on a certain other team, some more people would be sticking up for him. Its not his fault his coach moved him to were the team needed him. Besides, he was not in the same bracket as Hagan, Conklin, and Ojeda.
observer,
You're right …it's like comparing apples and oranges.
marshall would come out of the corner everytime, because he is a smart player that doesnt need to destroy a player in the corner with his strength. And he is a lot stronger than you give hime credit for. And marshall can control the flow of the game
Very few people understand defense. Making comparisons is ridiculous. All of the names mentioned that played this year are good defensemen, but they might have different roles and they play for different teams. There are also age differences among the defensemen mentioned.
Clare is by far the best defensemen in the hudson valley area probably in the state of N.Y. for his age. Clare was invited to the top 40 camp in Michigan where he will try out for the U17 national team next week. He already has at least two D1 full scholarship offers. He is a projected top 20 draft pick by many scouting services when he turns 18. I would like to know what other defensemen in this area has that resume.
How does Ojeda make second team all-state but not all league.
IT MAKES NO SENSE
