All-league selections

Here are the all-league sections, which are selected by the coaches from that particular league. It appears to be formula-based: four picks for the winning team, three for the runner-up, two for the middle teams and one each from the bottom three. Then honorable mention for two players from each team.
A few things I noticed at first glance: Andrew Ojeda made second-team all-state but not all-league. … All four Pelham selections were juniors, which gives some indication of how strong it can be next year. Similarly, Mamaroneck honored three juniors and Mahopac’s picks were a junior, sophomore and freshman. … There were only five all-league defensemen combined in Leagues 1, 2 and 3. Are they being undervalued?… After hearing so much about E/T/B, and Burdick scoring 45 goals for Pawling, I was surprised to see Nick Mucci get League 3 co-MVP.
As always, congratulations to everyone. The Journal News all-star teams (Westchester/Putnam and Rockland) are still to come.

how can Ojeda be all state, and not first team all league?
and how can Schelling coach the only undefeated team in the state, after a 45 game unbeaten streak, and not be coach of the year?
thats Allstate's stand, are you in good hands?
Chiapparelli deserved coach of the year. Yes, Schelling coached Suffern to a 45-game unbeaten streak, but Chiaparelli coached his team to an excellent record (four losses were to last year's D2 state champs, this years D1 state champs, and twice to Suffern during the streak) and also was the the head coach on the team that broke the streak. If this were like MLB where the awards are voted on before the playoffs, then yes, I would say give it to Schelling, but when you take the playoffs into account, Chap gets the edge.
As for Ojeda, things like this have happened in the past. I have seen years where Suffern had 5 guys who should make all-league, but only four spots, so the guy who won league MVP did not make the all-league team. This way you have five spots instead of four with one guy winning 2 awards. I think the rationale is that it would be hard to not give Natoli both the league MVP and All-League awards after the season he had, so since Ojeda made the all-state team, which is a huge honor and accomplishment, let someone else take his spot on the all-league team.
Kudos to all players from all Leagues. Pretty much what I expected. Best of luck to all Seniors.
Agree with LoHud Hockey- With lots of strong players on some of these top teams (that's why they are the top teams), it is good to see the coaches use the All League slots to assure as many of their guys as possible get some form of recognition.
In my opinion, Ojeda deserves to be All League.
Chiaparelli deserves coach of the year, if for nothing else, the way he can balance himself on top of the boards while screaming at the refs!
If anyone sees names misspelled, please e-mail me at hgutmann@lohud.com. I just copied and pasted what was sent out to all the coaches. Thanks
lots of league 1 kids get left off because of number restrictions. Chap deserved it as did the Rye coach, a few coaches in league 1 did awesome jobs. Pelham turned around a bad season last year to get to the finals, Rye won their 2nd section title. Mamaroneck lost only 4 games. Suffern kept the streak going and won league 1 and lost only 1 game.
Harold, any word on next years league alignments?
Can't figure the Ojeda situation out,it baffles me! But also, look at Rogers from Rye, he made All State as a Defensemen and he made All League as a Forward. Pretty good since he played Forward all season. Things happen so just go with the Flow!
Listen, don't worry about it! Just congrat's to all the players.
Congradulations to all of the players making the all-league team. I have a question is there a all-chshl team or is catholic high school players only have a chance to make the journal news all star teams? Does anyone know if there is an all-chshl team?
Good Luck! wrote:
"Can’t figure the Ojeda situation out,it baffles me!"
It appears to me to be a subjective decision simply because there are no objective criteria to judge defensemen. Some people appreciate defensemen playing great defense while others prefer defensemen who put points on the sheet. Unfortunately, the points are the only things that show in the MaxPreps Stats. I would very much like to see plus/minus defensemen stats kept and that be considered in the ratings.
Harold,
When will the All League Selections be in the Journal News?
Agree with you tape. Plus/Minus is what matters most. Judging by what I saw of him this season, my guess is that Ojeda's Plus/Minus was outstanding. Solid defenseman.
Considering how many goals Suffern scored and how few they gave up, I am guessing everyone on Suffern had an outstanding +/-.
I agree with you LoHud. But there should be an objective way to rate the defensive abilities of defensemen. +/_ is far from a perfect indicator, since there are 5 other players on the ice who may have contributed far more, negatively or positively, on a particular goal. It's all I could come up with. Have any suggestions?
Ultimately, when the lights flash and the siren sounds it is the goalie and the defenseman on the ice that take the blame. They are your last line of defense.
Tiger,
Statistically…..it's only the goalie!
That is why Plus/Minus matters.
Statistics for defensemen (and in general) are misleading. Some defensemen are used on the power play more, others on penalty kill as well as other factors that would make statistics misleading. One thing you can be sure of, all the better teams have solid D.
Unfortunately for defensemen they are almost like Offensive Linemen in football when it comes to stats. The only stats that are really kept on a defenseman are offensive stats, so they are not really indicative of what they are doing defensively.
There are a bunch of small things that could be used as stats for defensemen, but they would be a nightmare to keep track of, especially at the HS level. Things like how many times the puck came out towards them at the blue line and how many times they were able to keep it in the zone vs. how many times it got out of the zone. Or what about keeping track of how many times they got beat on a 1-on-1, 2-on-1, 2-on-2, 3-on-2, 3-on-1, etc.? These are things that a coach may ask his statistician to keep track of during a game, but are never anything that would be put into practice across the board and logged as an official stat.
When it comes down to it, defensemen most often only get noticed when they do one of two things. Either when they score (which is doing the job of the forwards) or when they f*** up.
Here it is:

Speaking of categories (not just defensive categories), when Suffern was at the West Genny tournament earlier in the season, the WG tournament booklet listed some stats for their players that some of us hadn't seen before. They had a category called SEP, PD and SB. We figured out the SB pretty quickly, but the other two were a little harder so we asked the West Genny Coach. Anyone want to guess what they stand for? No Suffern people who were with me are allowed to guess or they will be punished. Severely.
I've been informed that there's no all-section team and apparently there hasn't been for 20 years. So feel free to create your own below. Player, coach, first team (3F, 2D, 1G) and second team.
Go to the tape,

Biff,
SEP, PD and SB???? I give up.
SEP- Stopped end zone passes
PD- Passes denied
SB- shots blocked
you got one "let me guess"
My guess is he got Shots Blocked.
YES, but i honeslty forget SEP.. i keep thinking simplified employee pension.. maybe i will remember when i leave my office..
How about "Sucessfully Ended Power-Play" and "Post-Ding"
PD is Penalties Drawn
Wow, I think the Guru is even stuped on these.
Assuming you are referring to me, I think I got one of rhem (Penalties Drawn). I would have gotten Shots Blocked, too, but I hadn't checked the site in a couple hours. SEP is bothering me, though.
Did any Mamaroneck players have anything in this category? Maybe it was "Sent ETB Packing"
Yes, the SB is shots blocked and the PD is penalties drawn. The reason we couldn't get SEP is because it is not initials for something with three words beginning with S and E and P.
so SEP is not really a fair category because it is only one word, not three, but it is a category that helps your team win. Hey, I didn't make the categories, West Genny did.

I think it was Friesen and Chaps that were already elected as co coaches of the year in league 1 for this season. So how does the Suffern coach get considered? The best he can be is #3 in one of the 4 leagues. I think you can consider the coach of the year winners in L2 thru 4, though.
Also Urban or Hiller instead of Ruthberg and Rogers instead of Conklin.
There is no such thing as all section right. Its just what people make up??? And when does all country come out
how many points did connor finish his career with? Has anyone had more than him in recent years?
jordan bloom (last year) graduated with over 200pts
conner had in the high 180s, low 190s
salt had high 170s
ha.. i think graduates a couple of years ago like gitler, herman, capablo, etc had more points in their senior year than conner had in his career (granted it's a different league now)
look the way i see it, conner is a great player, but he's not a standout superstar that can dominate a game. I give those titles to herman, gitler, foster, the daniel twins, willows, etc. The fact of the matter is there was no standout superstars this year, so it made conner look like one. He had a great Senior year – 73 points. but Willows had 103 points as a sophomore, daniels had close to 100 their last year on suffern, gitler and herman had liek 120 point each one year, etc.
Ok Biff….Ive been up 27 straight hours now trying to figure out SEP!!! I need some sleep, LOL.
Go to the Tape, thanks for the laugh. I have to wait for LoHud Hockey to also give up. and postman, don't you dare jump in here.
I think I have given up, too. The only thing that jumps to mind is SEP having something to do with Short-Handed, Even-Strength, & Power-Play (like number of shifts on each), but since you said it is an abbreviation for one word rather than an acronym for three words starting with S, E, & P, I am stumped.
It stands for Separations and it means anytime a player separates an opposing player from the puck, whether that be by wrecking him with a check, picking his pocket, telling him his mother is ugly etc.
That was a great question and a great Stat.
I just spent the better half of 2 days googling SEP and West Genny hockey and….ahh, back to work
I have a two other stat categories.
HOG- stands for Hog. The act of not passing and taking a low % shot when your teammate is wide open for a quality shot. Also applies when you don't make a head man pass because you might not get a goal or an assist on the play and instead try to go end to end yourself and lose the puck.
SWHD- Skating with head down – The inability, as opposed to the refusal (see HOG above), to see your wide open teammate because you skate with your head down and live in your own special world.
Biff I love those stat categories. Wish Suffern used these the last few years. Maybe they should be added to the yearbook and we know who would be at the top of the list!!!
Thanks Bifffffffffffzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Another thing that costs teams is guys who take lots of penatlties and utimately cost their team PP goals against. On every team I've ever played on its the same 2 or 3 guys who go to the box twice per game.
anyone know when all county list comes out
Don't we all know HOGs and SWHD? The thing I've never been able to understand is why coaches let them get away with it. If it seems obvious to me from the stands, why don't the coaches nip it? Probably because the HOGs and SWHD are successful enough coaches don't want to bench them, even though the team as a whole would probably perform better if he did now and then. I know one kid who racked up a lot of goals, but scarcely got an assist all season. He could barely skate, but he could park himself in front of the net and scuffle around and whack it in with enough frequency that the coach let him do it. He was a special team unto himself. The opposing teams probably underestimated him because he did not look impressive on the ice. A very good linemate took one for the team all season and didn't get many goals because this guy just didn't have the skill to return the favor and set him up. And he had to stifle it while this guy walked around all swagger. The bottom line is you can't give all the credit to the guys with the goals. There is a supporting cast who make it possible. No man is a team unto himself.
The Islanders could use a guy who racks up goals. They outplay the other team most games and still lose.
?,
There is no official all-county teams. If you mean The Journal News team, it will come out in about a month (sports like indoor track and basketball still have over two weeks left in the season).
Also, I just received word that the new league alignments will not be decided until the athletic directors meet on April 30.
The teams that win, those coaches curb all that individual garbage. thats why some of the top teams do not have the leading scorers sometimes, while the weaker teams sometimes do
Conner is not a standout player? He frigging wrecked Sufferns season, scored 5 goals on Suffern! The best D and best goalie in the state! He scored more goals (as 1 players) against the #1 team in the state than any whole team did in 1 game!!!! HE also scored against Massena!! HE scored against the best the state had to offer. Nobody in section 1 can say that. There is not one player who had the success he had, he made defensemen look foolish all the time, and embarrased every goalie at some point in the season.
As for Conklin getting it over Ojeda, as a Mamaroneck person, I don't see it. Mamk avoided Ojeda as much as they could, and went at Conklin because he was a weaker skater. Ojeda was the only kid Mamk tried to stay away from, he was also the only kid who did not get caught down low while Mamk had a 3 on 1 for the game winning goal and wrecking Sufferns season.
Whoever wins section 1 gets coach of the year, it is not rocket science. And whoever wins the lower leagues winds up coach of the year for the lower leagues. If suffern wins 2-1 in sectionals, Schelling would have got coach of the year again.
umm yea but matt willows had 5 goals against massena in one game last year when high school hockey was more competitive and massena is pretty much the same team this year, so someone in section one can say that. And he also scored against alot of other top teams including natoli and added many assists also. Thats a standout player. And conner did nothing last year against him so think before you talk.
the only reason he leads this class of seniors in points is cause hes the only one who played as a freshman
Willows is irrelevant. You must be a north lover who can't stand the fact that north is an embarrasment and could not even beat a mediocre league 4 team in the playoffs. Isnt a willows one of the coaches? Nice work staff.
It is weird how much jealousy there was all year over conner. A kid who said screw playing juniors, it is a waste of time and money for the last 2 years. And was still the best offensive player this year. He only played high school hockey, and still outskated everyone. The best skater, the best stick handler and the best shooter. He was small, and did not play juniors the last 2 years and was STILL the best. And guess what, with 15 seconds left in the biggest game of the year tell me who was the hero? Natoli? No. Willows? HA HA he choked his chances verse suffern. Ruthberg? Conklin? NO , and No. It was CONNER who skated away with the section championship, it was conner who outscored every single league 1 player by a lot. All 5'7" and 145 lbs. of him (soaking wet). Sorry, you can't teach genetics, the kid was awsome and he did what no other senior did this year… he had his chance, he took it, and he buried it in the history books. And is the only senior (along with the other mamk seniors) to bring home the section 1 D1 championship home to Mamk.
Conner = Winner There is no arguing that. Conner and his teammates were great…WHEN IT MATTERED.
I rest my case. Don't bother replying, I won't be back until next year. Your jealous retorts will be ridiculous anyway.
Guess you're a big Conner fan! Never heard much of him last year when little Willows, as a sophomore, was racking up the points – lucky for your "star" he wasn't in the league this year. And, no, Mr. Willows, is not involved with the varsity coach. Sad that you think North is an embarrassment—there will be some down years for North, as can happen to any team, including yours.
yes, you cant teach hanging
conner got a lot of abuse on this blog because he classlessly flipped off parents, fans and players of an opposing team, on more than one occasion
Some players and parents (not most) are jealous because after literally thousands of dollars in clinics and travel hockey some kid (conner) who does not even play any outside rec hockey, nevermind 5,000 – 10,000 dollar "travel high caliber wonderful hockey" can outskate their kid, out shoot them, and outscore them, and score on the best and worst goalies and everyone in between. I don't think there has ever been a kid who was the best player in section 1 who did not play outside hockey, you can not teach god given ability.
As far as flipping the bird, that story took on a life of its own. People use that story to try and justify ripping a kid who for 4 years of varsity hockey played hard and tough, even though he was one of the smallest kids on the ice. He leaves with nothing else to prove.
The best scorer? Conner
The best skater? Conner
The best stickhandler? Conner
One of The most clutch goals in section 1 playoff history? Conner
Section 1 champion in his senior year? Conner
Not taking any crap from anyone, and doing it his way and not conforming to the dopes who think that "class" is judged on a hockey rink? Conner
Guess what, I doubt Elliot Spitzer didnt flipped off anyone at a rink, and everyone thought he had class. Anyone on the blog who judged anyone by saying they do or don't have class are idiots. You don't know a person from watching a hockey game. Conner will be missed. But I am sure when Jackson is scoring and assisting on game winners again next year, Jackson will be the one who gets the "no class" tag. Which is OK, because he will also be skating around the hommocks with another section 1 D1 championship while you jealous bloggers run to your computers to blog and cry.
Sorry but you can rant on about who you think is the best skater, it's your opinion but respect for others and being a person that others can look up to, does matter. You can try and say it doesn't matter but charater has everything to do with the game and in life. So rant on about it not mattering but IT DOES.
As far as who YOU may think is the best…it's your opinion. The fact that he did not play travel….well, maybe he wasn't up to the task. And you know what…when he was up against THE BEST skater with the best skill and playmaker in Section 1….he was invisible! And the 2 rebounds he put in….were when that player was in the box for ridiculous calls. That skater outplayed him. He didn't even win a faceoff against that player. He was taken off the puck by that player. So you can RANT but if you saw the two of them play against each other….yoo would know you are wrong. And most importantly, if you think that character does not matter, you are both in for many disappointmants in your life! So GROW UP!
Conner has been a great section 1 high school hockey player. A great player who was showcased in one of the top programs in the section. He deserves player of the year.
It's truly remarkable if he never played club/travel hockey ever. I would guess, but do not know, that he played through the Mamaroneck youth hockey association. MYHA is a real good program that has very competitive teams in the Long Island travel hockey league.
If he didn't play anything but high school the last 2 years, well, their was no errosion of skills probably developed through 10 or so years of youth hockey.
I guess I'm trying to say is that you need the organized youth teams, and clinics, and yes thousands of dollars, to get your game to a high enough level that you can be a top-notch high school player. Once your at that level, what you do in your senior or junior year club hockey wise, probably has less of an impact on your skills than what you did between the ages of 7 to 15.
Wrecked Suffern's Season? At 24-1-2, Suffern had a better season than Mamaroneck had this year, than Mamaroneck has ever had in the past, and will ever have in the future. Mamaroneck won the section title this year, and yes, to Suffern it was very disappointing. Mamaroneck had their 15 minutes of fame….and then did nothing with it. These seniors on Suffern have 3 Section Championships, 2 League Championships, 2 Reagional Championships, and 2 trips to Utica, not to mention a 45 game unbeaten streak, only 2nd in NYS HS history, and went through a BS media blitz that even the toughest politicians would have a hard time with. So yeah, hang up your lonely banner.
That is like saying The New England Patriots had a better season than the New York Giants. Trust me, Mamaroneck loves how the season played out. It could not have played out any better. I would rather lose some meaningless games in the regular season and win the section, than to win all those regular season games and lose in the biggest game of the season.
Mamaroneck played a great game verse the eventual state champion Massena, unfortunately for them, the calls went against them, they had the regional championship game winning goal called off, and instead of Mamaorneck it was Massena.
Wrecked Sufferns season? Yes absolutely, when it counted Mamaroneck won. They played in Sufferns shadow all year, and even though suffern people don't want to admit it, it was not an upset. Mamaroneck was a better "TEAM" than suffern. Faster skaters, more depth, played 4 offensive lines, and 5-6 D every game. Suffern relied on 9 skaters who were not nearly as athletic, fast, or as good of shooters. The difference the first couple of games was Natoli who I admit was the best goalie in the section. Natoli carried Suffern on his back for the last 3-4 years. There was no shock that the best TEAM won the section this year. You can have your league title, and your ridiculous streak (which nobody buys in to because you lost in a shootout last year, but technically it is a tie by record book standards, by everyone elses standards you lost that game).
more depth?
where?
the only depth we all see is the thickness of your egotistical skulls
better "TEAM"...you had one player, who hanged. he wouldnt have had those numbers on suffern cause if he didnt play hardcore defense, he wouldnt have left the bench
at least suffern went to Utica (twice) for that tie/clark overtime gamewinner/shootout loss 1-0 after 0-0 7periods
that is as close as it gets, and the closest a section 1 team has come to a state title since the last one suffern won, and the closest any team will be until suffern wins another
can we get a hit of what ever your on, man the delusion sounds great.
"Trust me, Mamaroneck loves how the season played out. It could not have played out any better." That's pretty pathetic. You have a chance to do things in the state, and you make your life on beating Suffern-once. Go read Ready, Aim, Fire! up above to know what winning is all about.
"That is like saying The New England Patriots had a better season than the New York Giants."
Not exactly…the Giants won the Big One. Mamaroneck didn't even get to hire the bus to go to the big one!
the ultimate would you rather:
would you rather have had the career of a mamaroneck senior of a suffern senior.
a mamaroneck senior saw his team play competative hockey for four years, winning a section title, and a few upstate tournaments.
a suffern senior saw his team make the section finals every one of the four years, winning three of them, along with 2 league titles, an undefeated league schedule, and the 2nd longest unbeaten streak in new york state high school hockey history. a suffern senior, in addition to winning many big upstate tournaments against the best the state had to offer, played two incredibly tight games in the utica aud for the state final four. and nearly every game entered a home ice atmosphere packed with hundreds of fans, families, and classmates game in and game out
Suffern players are extremely disappointed in themselves. They know they played tentatively and made a huge defensive mistake that gave Mamaroneck the win. And while Mamaroneck may obviously be happy with themselves as quoted from above, "Trust me, Mamaroneck loves how the season played out," they were a major disappointment to Section 1, especially having defeated the TEAM with the best shot at a state championship.
I saw the mamk-suffern game and will now ask the suffern people to change the lyrics to my song, that they sing between periods, that used to be titled:
Sweet Caroline
The new title is:
Sweet Conner Line
The lyrics are now:
Sweet Conner Line
Scoring never felt so good.
SO GOOD SO GOOD SO GOOD!!!
I would appreciate the Suffern fans now singing those lyrics at all future Suffern Games. Thanks, Neil Diamond
From now on when you sing that song (with either lyrics you choose) , you will forever remember what happened in 2008… keep singing that song when you play mamk.
Is connor now a leader of a cult? seems that way.
Sweet Connorline…..we heard that one before. Try being original in your posts. It keeps the blog interesting.
hmmm…how can they be a "TEAM" and you all call it the Connerline….sounds like one player to me
what's with the obsession with Conner (both pro and con)? getting very boring. don't make me come up with more made up stat categories just to change the subject. in other exciting news, four Ramapo police cars showed up at sporto on Saturday because two fathers were out of control at a pee wee level 3 on 3 tournament. One was filming the game (which already indicates a problem) and was screaming at the ref (who was a high school kid helping out) that he had his "bad" call on film. this is spring, 3 on 3 pee wee hockey!!!! happy to report that the non-screaming team upset the screaming team.
you know BIFF, these 3 on 3 spring tourney's are a VERY BIG DEAL to some.. i hear there a lot of college scouts at these type things..it is a good thing that this event didn't happen during HS season, there would have been a major problem for the modified team…
Biff,
I remember one Mother at a Saints Peewee game with a stop watch writing down her kids ice-time. Can't make this stuff up!!!
Anyone know how the mariners made out at their state tourney
I heard about the 3 on 3 incident. I also heard Ramapo's finest was named lead investigator so a root cause can be found. The video tape has been confiscated and we will know if there was a penalty on the play within a week. Do not hang the 3 on 3 championship banner from the rafters at sport-o quite yet.
Both Mariner Majors and Minors lost in their respective state final games last nite. Long ride home.
Majors had a very short bench by the final game. Keegan, McCabe and DiMario didn't make the trip and Datino and Altieri and others were injured during the tourney. Just ran out of gas playing 5 games in 48 hrs with so few kids. Only 10 skaters available by the end of it.
Minors lost to a team they beat easily in the preliminary round and also earlier in the season. Just a bad game at the wrong time.
Good effort all around. Thanks to Coach Rich and Mike also.
Lets face it, there is no one form this area going to the NHL any time soon. Starting with the youth hockey and going up, parents in particular, and because of them the kids are getting out of control. Why doesn't everyone just take a back seat and let the kids play the games and the ref's make there calls. Really it's a game it should be fun… for everyone.
RINK RAT.. I don't know what your problem is, but myself and EVERYONE I know is fully aware that there isn't anyone going to the NHL or playing any high level of college,, and we are having a lot of fun and most importantly so are the kids, so i have no clue of what you are talking about..there are a very small % of idiots everywhere, in every sport, job, intersection etc.. so your great words of wisdon and insight are really a waste of time..
The Vipers tier 2 16 and under won their state tournament and are going to Buffalo in 2 weeks for nationals
Good luck Vipers! Go get them.
1st place prize is a trip to Buffalo !!
I'll take the 2nd place prize
Congrats to the Viper Midget Minor team. Great season. Do well in your shuffle off to Buffalo.
To ha- I agree with you that Conner is a super player. We all experienced that this season. He will be missed. Mamo will be very strong next year, but Jackson is no Conner. Conner has explosive speed and a sniper shot. Jackson has good hockey sense, but nowhere near the speed or shot that Conner has. He will get his points next year skating on such a strong team, but opposing teams will not be forced to key on Jackson like this year's Mamo opponents had to with Conner. Jackson is solid, Conner is superb.
overrated
no, not the band…
a winner.
Good luck to the Vipers @ Nationals!
If you missed the All League Selections in the Journal News today, it's because they weren't there. Only the top award winners were mentioned and for a complete list of All League and Honorable mention players you're directed to LoHud.com/vc.
That's too bad. I know some of the boys who worked hard all season would have liked to see the list printed in the newspaper.
But All County picks are still to come. Last year they were announced around mid April.
New Topic:
All County Rockland
All County Westchester
My Selections:
Rockland
Forwards: Salt, Ruthberg, Hiller
Defense: Conklin, Ojeda
Goalie: Natoli
Westchester
Forwards: Conner, King, Novick
Defense: Hagan, McCabe
Goalie: Glaser
you all see to forget this
jackson made one of the greatest passes to conner and conner did finish
i would guess that natoli was fooled or off guard by the pass
as everyone thought jackson was going to shoot
that is why there is no I in the word team
What is Natoli doing next year? Jr.'s, prep, d3?
"one of the greatest passes" "everyone thought jackson was going to shoot"???????????? WHAT??????? did you even see the play??? that might be one of the craziest things ever written on here.
For My Selections for Westchester I prefer:
Forwards: Conner, Encarnacao, King
Defense: Hagan, McCabe
Goalie: Glaser
Westchester & Rockland Counties (Combined)
Goalie: Natoli
Forwards: Salt,Connor, King
Defense: Hagan, McCabe
Rockland
Fwds- Salt, Hiller, Ruthberg
Def- Ojeda, Conklin
G- Natoli
Westchester
Fwds- Conner, Novick, King
Def- Hagan, McCabe
G- Reagan
Rockland – Suffern
Westchester – Mamaroneck
"jackson made one of the greatest passes to conner and conner did finish
i would guess that natoli was fooled or off guard by the pass"
Well, the pass was moving from Natoli's right to his left, and Connor was moving from Natoli's left to his right, and with no defensemen taking away any of the options, Natoli was toast. It was indeed a great pass!
To me it looked like Jackson actually pulled the puck back towards his body before he passed it, to avoid Ojeda's body which was low on the ice. If he had made a traditional pass, I think it would have been blocked. It is not easy to control the puck and make an accurate pass when you are pulling the puck back towards your body, especially considering the pressure of the moment, the fatigue late in a game etc. At a minimum, it certainly was a clutch pass. I never actually saw a high quality video of the play, so maybe he didn't do it the way I think he did, but again, still clutch. No panic. Give credit where credit is due.
Thanks to the mariners for their support. I assumed the major team would be competitive but i did not realize their minor would so well. Good luck to the organization next season (unless their playing us)

Where to purchase fire-arms so I can kill myself to prevent further boredom from reading all of your comments.
Whoever is listing the Westchester All County teams and is putting Glaser ahead of Reagan is missing something. Reagan (along with Natoli) has represented the Hudson Valley the past 2 seasons at Empires (much higher level hockey than HS hockey). The two have alternated starts in this forum. Reagan also played Juniors (making an all star team). Glaser is a solid Midget Minor Tier II goalie. Big step down from where Reagan is.
Before giving Glaser his All Westchester due, you would need to consider Fox Lane's Sartorious (who had a McIndoe type experience this season), Yorktown's Parra and KPV's Delaverne (who was the Brewster Tier I goalie while Glaser was the Brewster Tier II goalie in the same age group). What about New Roc's Felieu and Carmel's Glaviano (who were in net for Vipers' Tier II state championship and are off to nationals)? And I could also throw in Bennencasa who played very well down the stretch for Rye. All of these save Sartorious are back next year. Glaser is not even a shoe in for All County next season. He is one of a group of strong goalies east of the river. Mamaroneck's advantage is that they have great depth across their lineup. They are and will continue to be a very successful team, but for the most part (Connor the exception) it will be due to a team effort as opposed to outstanding individual play.
The all-county teams are not based on travel hockey. All of the players you mentioned except for Benincasa, you are giving them credit for what they did outside of HS this year. While those may be great accomplishments, they are not what goes into the all-county choices. You have to look at what they did for their HS teams.
To Lohud- Looking at stats, except for Parra, the aforemetioned travel guys all had great seasons for their HS teams. They simply were not on good teams. Are we saying you have to play on a successful League 1 team, or you can't be All County? Sartorious was 2.5 GAA for a 5-15 team. Glaviano had a 4.1 GAA for a 3-15 team. Those compare favorably to All State McIndoe's stats (similar situation). Felieu's 2.0 GAA and Delaverne's 1.5 also not unlike Glaser's GAA. Those 3 played on successful teams that were likely in the opponents' zone most of the game, taking pressure off the goalie and allowing for a low GAA.
You can not exclude #9 from WP from the list for All County. Actually, he is probably the best player in the section. Great hands, feet, and vision for the game. As well as probably the least selfish player in the section, which is probably what makes him the great playmaker he is.
Great numbers? yes, lousy soft schedule? yes. Mamaronecks goalie deserves it based on his numbers, against his schedule, which was significantly tougher than Fox Lane, Stepinac, and anyone else.
The soft schedule is not their fault. It is soft b/c that is the best the team they play for can handle. I bet these goalies on many of these lower league teams (especially the teams with poor records at the lower leagues) face more high quality scoring chance shots than a goalie on a successful league 1 team. The successful league 1 team keeps the puck in the offensive zone a lot and when it is in their zone, their good D keep the shots to the side. The goalie on the unsucessful lower league team is probably getting pummelled with high percentage shots, albiet from players who, on the whole, are less skilled than higher league players. Its an interesting argument. I can see both sides.
of course, but now your talking potential and what ifs? Based on the completed season we have to go by the numbers and whats here.
If you go by numbers alone, Delaverne has the lowest GAA of an east of river goalie getting regular playing time. And he was Brewster's Tier I goalie while Glaser was the Brewster Tier II goalie in the same age group.
Glaser played big against the #1 team in the state. Reagan lost to Iona. Case closed. Glaser may not have been as good as some of these goalies years ago because he started serious hockey late. But everyone knew he was an excellent athlete, and has surpassed almost all the goalies ahead of him at this point. He is an outstanding goalie, and knows how to win.
Congrats Luke, you were outstanding this year, and just improved every single day at a great pace. Looking forward to an even better season next year.
GLAZE,
What a joke. Glaser over Reagan is Crazy. Just remember that Stepinac lost to MW 4 to 3 in OT. Mamaroneck or Glaser got destroyed 5 to 0 (NADA).
To even mention Glasers name in the same sentence as Reagan's is just laughable.
Really, if you look at Mamaroneck's schedule…..who did they actually play? No ONe! They beat the teams they should of beaten. No surprises and NO upsets. And when they had the chance to make a name for themselves they CHOKED!
Connor good high school player….used to be average but the copetition in HS has declined greatly over the past couple of years!!!
As for glaser..it is really laughable…your talking HS hockey…i don care if when he started taking hockey seriously its HS most players are brutal therefore stopping thier shots mean absolutely nothing….idk how ppl some of these kids not just the two mentioned above are real good hockey players…its mind-bottling! ha
Obviously you are not over the fact that Mamk won the section. And CONNER GOT CO_MVP – FINGER AND ALL!!!! I guess the coaches had to agree that he was indeed the best forward in the section… and his finger up in the air showed who was #1, and that would be Mamaroneck.
Sorry Section 1 fan, and it aint going to get better next year as mamk is returning everyone except Conner and his finger.
See you next year, as you keep pounding your keyboard in bitter anger, Mamk is busy winning another section championship… this time in baseball.
To mam players blogger,
The only thing that is brutal is your spelling, punctuation and grammar. Maybe you should have paid more attention in Middle School English Class.
hah thats the only thing you can say b/c you know I am right…well bud as long as you got my point and it rattled you like it was supposed to it's all good!
Mamaroneck blogger is a jerk, but he is right about one thing. The Journal News awards are based on the high school season, not youth or travel hockey. Therefore Glaser had the tougher schedule than both Stepinac and Kennedys and Glaser won. His team went further and did more and he palyed a major role. Lets not forget he beat Suffern, and that counts and wipes out the loss Monroe because Monroe didnt beat Suffern either.
I see the goalies this way.
Natoli
Glaser
Reagan
Mc kinney
"Sorry Section 1 fan, and it aint going to get better next year as mamk is returning everyone except Conner and his finger."
He accounted for 35+% of your team goals (a team with an impressive 4.64 gpg-good for second best in league 1)
Suffern returns the highest point scoring junior in the section to the team with 4.703gpg- the highest in league 1)
CONNER GOT CO_MVP – FINGER AND ALL!!!!,
Isn't it amazing that the only one that approves that Connor gave the finger are the fans from Mamaroneck. How they can award a plyer for such behavior baffles me. Why the journal would give out such awards to somone just amazes me. Can't wait till he gets the MVP of Westchester. Now that would be a joke. Way to st an example for all kids. Be an idiot and we will award you!
Fanotgame.. i think you are losing your mind. Did you actually write this..
"I bet these goalies on many of these lower league teams (especially the teams with poor records at the lower leagues) face more high quality scoring chance shots than a goalie on a successful league 1 team."
If that theory is correct, we should schedule games against NHL teams as they would never has as many quality scoring chances as a league 4 team would. I am losing a lot of faith in you after that comment. And to compare Glaser to Reagan is crazy, AT THIS POINT (remember Reagan is a year older) Reagan is a MUCH better goalie, and also to the person who said Reagan made the all start team.. that is not correct, he was an alternate and I don't think he even played a minute..
You have to add Mcindoe in there, i think i would put him above Glaser… but its close.
if i hoped in goal today for the first time i would be better then "GLAZE" haha
please go back to english class!!! or better yet, grab a broom, as that is probably all you'll be using for the rest of your life.
Postman- I agree with you that Reagan is way ahead of Glaser. Go back and read my earlier posts more carefully.
Regarding my comment about lower league goalies- I was simply making the point that it is not their fault they go to school where the team, as a whole, is not strong and has to play in the lower leagues. Because their team is not strong, these lower league goalies (especially the ones on teams with poor records in the lower leagues) often get shelled in net. It is unreasonable to expect even a very strong goalie to have a very low GAA in that situation. I was not saying the league 4 teams are better than the league 1 teams; or even that the league 4 goalies face better shooters than the league 1 goalies. I was trying to point out that the league 4 team defense might allow league 4 shooters a lot more time and space than league 1 defenses allow the league 1 shooters. So, with all that extra time and space, the league 4 offenses can really shell a league 4 goalie. My thought simply stated is that some league 4 goalies might actually be similar to or better than some league 1 goalies. I don't think that is a crazy proposition.
Look, it is impossible to truely compare every goalie in the section based on HS. The game speed in the lower leagues is so slow compared to what some of us are used to, and some goalies cant show their ability against that. For some, if their is no adrenalin running through you, you just play down to the oppenents level. There is also the argument of weaker (and less hockey intelligent) defencemen playing in front you, which causes more screens and deflections from your own team, as well as little help on clearing rebounds. There are goalies that dont get the credit they deserve because thet do play weaker competion.
However, for all league awards based on high school, you have to go with L1 or CHS goalies unless somebody else has ridiculously good numbers (and the JFK goalie was close). But when you argue for who is THE best, you have to look outside of high school.
Fanotgame, that is why you use stats like save % when a goalie plays for a weak team. You also need to remember that all the teams in league 4 are weak, so the offenses on these teams are weak as well. Not many kids in league 4 have a hagan or conklin slap shot, or the moves of a salt or conner.. even if they are giving the offense more time to shoot, the shot won't be that great anyway. so if they are getting peppered with shots, the shots aren't anywhere near the quality of a league 1 teams shot, so it basically balances itself out. I have written many times before there are probably a bunch of kids that kind of get the shaft by playing in a league 4 team, it really isn't fair but it is what it is..you can't really tell how good a kid is due to the fact that they are playing against weaker teams. My comment about Reagan was not meant towards anyone specific and especially not towards you.
I guess your kid was not even honorable mention huh?
But I bet he got all state in Manners class!
This year there were four good teams in League 1 and four bad teams in league 4. All the rest, from the bottom of league 1 to the top of league 4 were or could have been competitive on any given game. So I have to slightly discount the arguement that Mamaroneck or Suffern faced a high quality team every single game and that White Plains or North Rockland had a creampuff schedule.
You can't just presume that only the best players reside in league 1. Sure, Tom Natoli, is the best goalie, but he plays on a great team that showcases him. Or conversely, he is the reason Suffern is so great. Same with Connor. Put these great players in a lower league and I still think they would perform spectacularly.
Conversely, put a great league 2 or 3, even 4 player on a top league 1 team, he would still be great.
That being said, unless we want college or professional scouts to pick our local all star teams, it make most sense to use individual player statistics, with more all-star selections being geared to the most succesful teams.
Glaser won the big game against a great team,Reagan lost against an ok team , Glaser this year was the better goaltender, and he was dedicated to his team played all 28 games!
the record,
That OK team would of beaten Mamaroneck. Stepinac would of beaten Mamaroneck. Mamaroneck just beat Fordham who came in 4th in the CHSHL. Amen!!!!! LOL
To Sec 1 fan,
Obviously you still are not over the fact that mamk won the section.
By your ridiculous logic you would have to make this leap:
Suffern wrecked Iona 5-2. Mamaroneck beat Suffern 2-1. So you would make the leap that Mamaroneck would beat Iona 6-2 or 6-1.
However, that is an ignorant way to look at things.
If you want to go a step further, Iona was shut out by RCDS 1-0, Mamaroenck beat RCDS 6-3. So when Iona and Mamk played the better teams, who won? Oh yeah, it was Mamaroneck.
If you were to use that logic, here is something to think about. New Rochelle loses to White Plains by one, WP loses to Mamo by one, Mamo beats suffern by one, so you could say Suffern and WP are equal and Suffern would only New Ro by one goal.
Against top teams in the state- Mamaroneck is 1-4, Suffern is 5-1
Hey section 1 fan,
Monroe Woodbury 5 Mamaroneck "0". Mamaroneck got lucky against Suffern, let's face it. If Suffern went to the states, they would of gone far… Mamaroneck was lucky!
The only game that mattered all season was the section 1 championship. If you don't remember Mamaroneck 2 Suffern 1.
Suffern was 0 – 1 when it mattered.
Go buy a box of kleenex and stop crying already, you are embarrassing everyone in sloatsburg.
"IF Suffern went to states". Please get this through your head. SUFFERN DID NOT GO TO STATES. IT IS OVER. THEY WILL NEVER GO TO STATES IN 2008. YOU LOST. MAMARONECK IS THE CHAMPION. ALL History of section 1 will say :
Mamaorneck High School Section 1 D1 2008 Champions.
Nowhere will it say, Suffern played well upstate and were undefeatted until they lost with 15 seconds left in the biggest game of the year. Nobody cares who came in 2nd place.
Yes Mamaroneck won the section title, but then it was sput sput sput thud clang thththththth….crash. Sweetie "the finger" Connorline will have to pay his own way if he ever want's to see beautiful downtown Utica.
Too bad its a dump.
Good blogging except please dont put Iona with Suffern and Mamaroneck. Iona is a good team, not a great team. Over the course of the high school season Glaser played better and against better competition than Reagan did so therefore in this high school year Glaser was better. Outside of high school, you want to say Reagan is better? ok, maybe but maybe his priority was travel, and Glaser won bigger games against bigger teams, in high school
good blogging except,
Both Stepinac and Iona were better than Mamaroneck.Overall better talent and much better goal-tending. You barely got by Fordham. And I know you beat Suffern, but for you to think that your on the same level as Suffern That's funny. Mamaroneck beating Suffern was an upset and we all know that. Just remember, Monroe Woodbury 5 Mamaroneck "0". ANd then when Mamaroneck really started to play with the Big Boys and could of made a name for themselves, THEY CHOKED. SUffern would never of lost that game.
Mamaroneck really wasn't that good. May of had a good record…bur who else did they beat? End of Story…... Really Mamaroneck in the end was a big disappointment because they couldn't get out of the first round.
Ridiculous comments on Mamaroneck…
They were better at the end of the season than the beginning. Thats what matters most.
Do you think if the 1980 USA Olympic Team played the Russians one more time that they would have won again? Absolutely not! They probably would have gotten destroyed. But for that one night…well we all know what happenned…see the movie if you don't.
Just like in 1980 (I'm being overlt dramatic here), the 07-08 section 1 hockey season will be remembered for Mamaroneck's upst of an undefeated Suffern team.
Suffern had a great season but could not close the deal. With all the great victories over CN, and the deep playoff runs these particular Suffern seniors experienced, they'll also have learned of the disappointment of an unexpected defeat. But they'll be fine, to be cliched about it is just "part of life". At 20 year reunions they'll remember an overall great hockey experience that made them better people.
Surprised that you are allowing your disdain for Mamaroneck to cloud your judgement. I do not root for Mamaroneck but lets be honest. Stepinac, Iona? were not better than Rye, Pelham, or some of the other league 1 teams. Iona and Stepinac are not better than Mamaroneck or Suffern. Regarding that, I think Suffern is better than Mamaroneck, Mamaroneck only beat them once this season. Stepinac and Iona play a weaker schedule than both Suffern and Mamaroneck, not their fault but just the way it is. Be fair
Sect 1 I `m surprised,
Honestly do you really think League 1 was tough this year. ANd Before this year, when was the last time Mamaroneck beat Suffern? I still think the wimn over Suffern was an upset and I do think Iona and Stepinac were better than Mamaroneck.
Iona and Stepinac? based on what? who did they beat other than those weak Catholic school teams? Stepinac had a statement game against Monroe and Iona beat Stepinac but those teams are a level below Suffern and Mamaroneck and quite frankly I think Rye, Pelham, maybe even Rye Town Harrison, Yorktown were as good as Stepinac and Iona or better. That catholic league has problems, they play too many games against each the same teams and many of the catholic league teams were not that strong this year. Looking at Stepinacs final schedule on varsity central are you aware they played Iona 7 times, Farrell 6 times, Fordham 4 times, St Eds and Chaminade 3 times. That is ridiculous. So its hard to gauge it in my opinion
Section 1 Fan,
Mamaroneck beat Suffern last season actually
Travel team, The US went on to win the gold, mamo… not so much
the mamaroneck seniors are 2-7 against suffern in their career
Sect 1 I `m surprised,
Mamaroneck just barely beat Fordham Prep (Who came in 4th in the CHSHL)and Mamronmeck got killed by killed by Monroe Woodbury… Let's face it Mamaroneck got lucky against Suffern and there's no way they would ever beat Stepinac or Iona at season end.
Sorry, we agree to disagree Sect 1, I am not a Mamaroneck fan, but I must say that there is no way Iona or Stepinac could beat Mamaroneck this season.
Conner's 2-7… all the other Mamaroneck Seniors are 2-3
The way Stepinac and Iona were playing down the stretch, Mamaroneck would of been beaten by both CHSHL teams.
They both had beter forwards, defensemen and goalies.
Listen, I think that Mamaroneck had a good team, NOT GREAT but good. I also think that Iona and Stepinac could beat Mamaoneck, Especially Iona. I think that match ups between Mamaroneck vs Iona would favor Iona.
I realize Mamaroneck has Connor but Iona has King who is probably a better skater than Connor, but Connor has a little better hands,But each can score and each are very dangerous.
Iona would have the Edge on defense with McCabe,Shipper and Kirinc. I realize Mamaroneck has Hagan but McCabe is probably the number one defensemen in the area this year.
And Iona has alot stronger forwards with Lopez, Cambria, Molinaro. Mamaroneck has no one to match up with those three.
And overall, DiMario is beter goalie than Glazer.
Who cares. Mamaroneck is the champion. The best team won. NObody who watched the 3 games between these 2 teams was shocked that Mamk won. If you had eyes, you saw who the better team was. This was certainly no upset.
Reading sect 1 fans blogs just leaves me to believe that he is in 3rd grade and is not worth arguing with.
As for Iona, You could not give suffern or RCDS a game, meanwhile Mamk beat both teams, you would get wrecked by Mamaroneck. Iona's schedule is a joke, and when it was time to step up to the plate you got destroyed. Mamaroneck played suffern tough every time, even in the first game when they played horribly. When they got Jackson back, that was the difference, Jackson was the player that tilted the scales in Mamks favor. That game winner does not happen without jackson. It is not worth arguing with Iona people though, they are just blogging and trying to cut Mamk down to feel better about the crummy league they play in.
Iona is a joke, that is why everyone from Mamk that went there, wind up coming back to Mamk. I know it is hard for Suffern people to admit that Mamaroneck was hungrier, hit harder, outshot, outgoaltended, and easily outskated Suffern in the championship… the game that actually mattered, but it really does not matter if they are in denial, the bottom line is winning the championship… and that is what Mamaroneck did. If it is true (which it is not) that Suffern was so much better than mamaroneck… then the suffern loss was the biggest all-time choke in section 1 history. Never has a team in Section 1 been ranked #1 in the state and then lose in the sectionals. Also, check the state rankings now…. seems that the NY sportswriters also agree that Mamaroneck is better than suffern. http://www.newyorksportswriters.org/reference/current_polls_hockey_080312.shtml
You keep bringing up Mama just beat fordham, remember Mama benched 8 players that game, and still won, I saw iona and Stepinac play ,they would never beat Mama on any day this past season. King is not even close to the skater Conner is,period, there is no debate!!!
Section 1 sniper,
I have played with and against Conner and King. Conner is good, but King is alot beter skater and overall play maker. Anyone who plays travel would agree. Even playing with them last year on the Empires, I would have to give the advantage to King. He sees the ice better and gets his other teammates involved.
Section 1 sniper,
Any why were those players suspended? Was it becasue of their Great Sportsmanship? Is that when Connor acted out by Flippinmg the Bird to the opposing fans and team? Is that why the MVP got suspended? Definitely MVP material for Westchester County. Guess their coach wasa really proud of that moment.
P.S I agree with Section 1 Fan
Everyone knows that Mamaroneck's win over Suffern was a "FLUKE". They were lucky! If they were the real thing, they would of gone further in the State Championships. They played messena and CHOKED! Suffern dedfinitely would of gone further in the tournament if had made it. Mamaroneck got lucky that one game, but that's all they needed!
Concerning the MVP award, I would never give it to a player who did not demonstrate good sportsmanship or disrepected his fellow players.
Blink,
Bottom line is that MAMARONECK got luky agaisnt SUFFERN! Then CHOKED in the playoffs.
Concerning Iona, they played Suffern and lost 5 to 2. When Mamaroneck played them the first time they lost 5 to 3. But your excuse was that they played poorly! Both Iona and Stepinac lost to Monroe Woodbury in Overtime. AND Mamaroneck lost 5 to 0, YES 5 TO 0, against Monroe Woodbury. Iona and Stepinac KILLED Fordham Prep and Mamaroneck just beat them 4 to 3. Fordham Prep even killed Mahopac 8 to 1 and Mamaroneck beat them 8 to 5.
Concerning Iona's schedule, after playing teams like St. Mary's, Bergen Catholic, Burke Catholic,Monroe Woodbury, Suffern. Teams that are highly respected! Not like the teams that Mamaroneck plays, like those upstate POWERHOUSE teams like Auburn (4 and 13),Cortland (6 and 13), Shaker ( 8 and 14) and Guiderland (13 and 10 ). Also, you barely beat Clarkstown North, who only won "1" game!
As mentioned earlier Mamaroneck got lucky. And then showed their true colors by CHOKING in the State Tournament. Face it, they weren't that good! LOL
Get off it with Iona, yes they played St Marys and LOST, Bergen Catholic LOST, Burke Catholic?? They are an average D2 team, discount them. Monroe LOST, Suffern LOST.
For a team able to recruit their brains out they are very mediocre, oh, can you be fair and mention the garbage league with 5 or 6 games against each of those teams as part of their schedule? Can you be fair?
Other than Suffern….......Who did Mamaroneck beat! They beat no one! They won one game and that's it. and when they could of made a name for themselves and League 1 THEY CHOKED!
THey didn't CHOKE!
But they embarrassed League 1.
They embarrassed League 1 by loosing to the state champs in a hard fought over time game? If you want to talk about an embarrassment to League 1 how about Mahopac or Clarkstown North.
Looks like OMG hit a nerve with Section 1 sniper. The truth hurts doesn't it! Playing those PowerHouse teams from Upstate really makes Mamaroneck look good. "NOT"!
Regardless what you think, Mamaroneck did CHOKE! BIG TIME!
lohud,
Didn't Mamroneck only beat those two teams by a score of 8 to 5 and 2 to 0? They wern't that good, had one upset win and then CHOKED!
You are correct…They also beat them 8 to 0 and 4 to 0. Choking is the Patriots… but if you want to call Massena beating Mamaroneck and then winning states because they were a good team a choke on Mamaronecks part then continue.
Believe me…...............Everyone in League 1 thinks Mamaroneck CHOKED! They got lucky against Suffern in the final and then embarrassed us in the State Playoffs. The past few years, League 1 winners went far. I guess Mamaroneck wished that they were playing teams like Auburn (4 and 13),Cortland (6 and 13), Shaker ( 8 and 14) or Guiderland (13 and 10 ). Then maybe they would of advanced further!
SO stop shooting off your mouths, because in the end Mamroneck went NOWHERE!
It's amazing how Blink and Section 1 Sniper can criticize the CHSHL. First of all, could you please tell me what kids Iona, Stepinac or Fordham recruited? Yes there were two players who went to Iona last year and played JV and then transfered to Mamaroneck for their sophomore years. Looks to me that they went to Iona first and then went to Mamaroneck. Maybe Mamaroneck did the recruiting! It's my understanding, that if they stayed at Iona, they would of been on JV AGAIN! Because their varsity team was loaded.
Here's a question for you, ask those two players how often they were recruited by Iona? and ask any player from Stepinac, Fordham or Iona how often they were recruited? the answer ….NEVER!
Regardless, what you think, the CHSHL plays very competitive Hockey. These teams don't care who they play as long as it's competitive. Mamaroneck played Suffern and that's it! Believe me if Mamroneck had to play Stepinac, Fordham ,Iona and Farrell 3 times a year, you wouldn't have the results that you had this year. Remember, Mamaroneck just got by Fordham 4 to 3. (PLEASE NO EXCUSES!)
Also, As mentioned,I know Mamaroneck plays Fordham. Is there a reason why they willn't play Stepinac or Iona? The true powerhouses like Suffern and Monroe Woodbury look to book games with these teams. What do they know that Mamaroneck can't figure out?
As a Pelham fan I really dont care all that much about mamaroneck. Here is my opinion…
Mamo was lucky to win the section championship, they played a hell of a game. Then they choked in states. In terms of the comparisons between Iona and Mamo. Mamo is the better team and would beat either Iona or Stepinac.
And whoever is comparing how they did against common opponents. Even though Mamo barely beat fordham, they won. They had no motivation to blow them out, but in the end, they won. Someone used the fact that mamo only beat mahopac 8-5 and iona beat them by more as a reason why iona was better… mamo also beat them 8-0 later in the year. Every team loses their heads some games, ie the MW game, but in the end, Mamo lost to MW, and so did Iona, who cares if they lost by more. in the end they LOST.
Personally, I think mamo is better, but in the end everyone typing their arguements doesn't bring us any closer to deciding who is better.
Mamaroneck didn't just lose to Monroe Woodbury…. They GOT KILLED! Actually, When Stepinac played and lost to Monroe Woodbury 4 to 3 in OT. It was Mamaronecks Tournament and they didn't even make their own tournament finals.
In my opinion, both Stepinac and Iona were just as good as Mamaroneck by the end of the season.
if not for section 1 officials mama would have won the state championship, then you wouldn't be taking would you.
Section 1 sniper,
Excuses, excuses, excuses…......You CHOKED! Got lucky one game and came back to earth the next game. End of story.

IF NOT FOR SECTION 1 OFFICIALS, SUFFERN BEATS MAMARONECK IN THE SECTION FINAL AND PROBABLY GOES ON TO WIN THE STATE!!!!
Don't forget the waived off goal and the no-call cross-check that lead to the break out pass and winning 3 on 1 goal, AND the ref admitted he didn't want to call another penalty on Mamaroneck because he thought it would influence the outcome.
Go to the tape,
Then you agree, MAMARONECK CHOKED!!!!!!!
Mamo and Suffern are better than Iona and Stepinac. Much more complete teams. Rye and Pelham are simliar to Iona and Stepinac. So is RTH with a healthy Urban. At the start of the season, I thought Iona was the top team in the area, based on their skating depth, espcially at forward. It took them all season to gell. And their goaltending never really impressed me at all this season. Stepinac has some strong skaters and a very good goalie. But they lacked defensive depth and their top scorer was shut down in the playoffs.
I don't understand why there is an ongoing discussion about how good or not Mamo is. They won the section so they were a pretty good team.
Didn't they play Suffern 3 times. Lost 5-3, lost 2-1 and won 2-1. Total goals for 6, against 8. Thats a 2 goal differential over 3 games. Sounds like Suffern was better overall (based on entire season results also) but the 2 teams were very evenly matched. The game preceding sectionals was 2-1 in favor of Suffern. I don't think you can make a Mamo sectional victory a MAJOR upset. They might have been the underdog but not by much.
Mamo lost in a hard fought qtr final in OT to the state champ. How is that a choke? The game went to overtime against a team that was undeafeated in the state playoffs. Section 1 was well represented, period.
"....Section 1 was well represented, period."
Debatable this year, period.
