Gearing up for Binghamton

The Hudson Valley ESG hockey team will be looking to medal for the third straight year when the Empire State Games get underway Thursday in Binghamton. Western has won eight straight gold medals, while HV is looking for its first. Since the competition began in 1982, HV has four silvers and four bronzes.
There’s a new poll so you can add your prediction about this year. Also, unfortunately (well, fortunately for me) I’ll be in California during the competition, but please feel free to add your thoughts on this week’s event.
All games will be held at Broome Community College. Below is the schedule and the roster (the teams are my best guess). It includes five Section 1 players (Frank Dimaggio of Yorktown, Michael Duffy of Pelham, Alex Hagen of Bronxville, Zac Hiller of Suffern and Sean O’Connor of North Rockland) and three private-school locals (Jordan Gluck and Jake Turrin of RCDS and Rob Molinaro of Iona Prep)

Mike Dougherty has been covering sports in the Lower Hudson Valley for the last 20 years. After writing extensively about local high school and college athletics for The Journal News and LoHud.com, he spent a decade on the Knicks beat. Mike has also filed stories from the Final Four, NBA Finals, U.S. Open, PGA Championship and World Series. He graduated from Slippery Rock University after spending two years at Kennedy Catholic in Somers and now lives in Brewster.

Hagen attends Bronxville High School which means he skates in Section 1 for ETB (the combined team of Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville). I think he goes by Alex, not John, though.
Thanks fanotgame,
I wasn’t sure if he had a brother.
hope hv wins it will be though to end that western 8 gold medal streak
Joke. Absolute joke. Four players and the coach just happen to be from Hopewell Junction. What is that, the new hockey powerhouse of the HV area? That explains the exclusion of almost all the top lower-Westchester players. None from Mamaroneck, Rye Town, Rye, White Plains. It’s an embarrassment that will only lower the importance of these games if this continues year after year.
This has been going on for years. Lloyd runs the team and is from up there. Gives everyone something to complain about. Most of these teams (Empire,USA Selects) are accused of politics. Way of the world and sports.
If you try out you better be lights out!
not sure about it being a hopewell junction thing, its more like a travel hockey thing. Travel hockey and where you play travel hockey is the passport in
Guys,
Last year there were no kids from Hopewell on the team. And to be honest with you, other than Eck and Conner the other players from Lower WEstchester aren’t that good!
And also, a few of those players have been trying out for the empires for at least 3 years. And each year they fell short, but this year they made it because of their skating experience.
Oh,
so the upper westchester kids are all better than the lower westchester kids? Wow. I thought the best high school teams where Mamaroneck Suffern Rye Pelham Iona. Guess there are no good players there? Oh, thats right, I forgot, if they are not in a specific travel program they lose points. My fault
These guys continually pick guys who play at either Brewster or Ice Time because thats where they coach, it has been that way for a while just check past rosters.
The guy Huntington who was the assistant the last couple of yrs would pretty much use his Brewster roster for most of this team.
This team is very political every yr and this yrs team really doesn’t stand much of a chance , maybe 5th place at best.
This kid Cerbino has been on the team for at least 3yrs and I dont care what prep school he goes to, he has done nothing during his time here.
Most Putnam and Orange county high schools do not have interscholastic hockey teams. It is all “club” high school hockey. Their is talent there. We do not get to see it because club teams cannot play against NY public school sanctioned teams.
We’ve seen the the good Monroe kids, Burke Catholic, RCDS kids in non-league matches, or we are aware of how these schools match-up with section 1.
I’d agree that the Hopewell Junction cluster of kids seems a little much, but I’ll assume they impressed someone in their midget or junior team years.
I watched the entire Empire process. I heard from many that the selection process is Ice Time centric. True, there are a lot of Ice Time players on this year’s team. But, I am not sure there were any on last year’s team. The Ice Time kids who made it this year looked during tryouts for the most part to be as good as or better than those that did not make the cut. Thought it was about as fair and objective as any hockey tryout process can be.
”... the Hopewell Junction cluster of kids seems a little much”
A little much? It’s a disgrace and an embarrassment for the entire program. Last time I checked Mamaroneck was 4th in the state. Suffern was 5th. I guess the fact that almost none of their players were even invited to the tryouts is just a small factor in the outcome of this selection process? The only Section 1 player worthy of this team is Suffern’s Hiller. And without saying anything detrimental about any specific kid, I think it’s clear that the remaining Section 1 area players on this team are just not the best players.
And back to Hopewell Junction … John Jay East Fishkill HS? RC Ketcham HS? Do they have hockey teams?
Normal- I think your point is that many of the Sec 1 kids you would expect to try out did not do so. I also found it interesting (and unfortunate) that the likes of Willows, Flory, McCarrick, Altieri, Sganga, Halpin, Meile (all incoming seniors who likley lose eligibility after this year)didn’t give it a try. I can understand why most of the graduating seniors punted on this one. It is a big commitment over 1/2 the summer before they leave town for college. Other good Sec 1 skater no shows like Pesce, Prunesti, Olivario, Dzenis, Mearsheimer, Ciotti all have another year of eligibility. Maybe we will see some of them next summer.
To fanotgame
I agree Prunesti and Olivero would have defintly made it and the others would have had fair shots. I did hear though that some coaches actually tried to find out the info for the ESG on when the tryouts are and where and what times and the ES people who run it wouldn’t give it to him. It is a shame too, with those two Prunesti and Olivero it looks like a different team they would be the top 5 players on the team the only ones better or close to them are Hiller Hagen O’Conner and Molinaro
” … John Jay East Fishkill HS? RC Ketcham HS? Do they have hockey teams?”
So just because your high school doesn’t have a hockey team, you can’t be a good player?
To Common sense- From watching the Empire practices, Cerbino (if you like a power forward) and Leen (if you like the small, quick player with hands and vision)are both very strong players. Both stronger than Olivario, who is very good. Have not seen Prunesti that much, but have heard very good things about him. Have also seen Pesce at a few RCDS games last year. Would rank Leen ahead of him too. Still, Prunesti, Olivario, Pesce would have been a pretty good 3rd line this year. Those 3 are simply better players than the Ice Time skaters that comprise lines 3 and 4 on this year’s team. But, the southern Westchester guys I mentioned never tried out. Can’t blame the Empire selection commmitee for that.
The point here is that this whole thing WAS fixed. You’re correct that Section 1 coaches could not find out the tryout dates for their players, and that their calls were ignored. And the reason the players couldn’t find them themselves was that they weren’t published anywhere, including on the ESG site. Go there now and check it out. Nothings changed. It still has tryout dates for every sport for every HV team except Mens Ice Hockey. And those players that did venture up there on their own initiative (after hearing the dates at the last mninute through the grapevine) were greeted with the “who are you?” welcome.
I’m sorry to take this so far and sound like sour grapes. So let’s just go back my original point and leave it at that: four players and the coach all from Hopewell Junction. If you can justify that and I’ll shut up.
Normal
If you dont recieve a letter as an invite you dont go, they never publish any info about hockey because it is the only sport that invites.
The only other way you get a shot is if the coach or LLoyd know before hand as has been for many yrs.
I can tell you for a fact 2 yrs ago when they won Silver 1 tryout couldn’t make it to any of the tryouts except the first night so they made him dress and skate across the ice to the bench and back and that was it he had a spot.
So how political is it.
The impression to many outsiders is that it is political. People dont trust it. Not to say that those on the team do not belong and not to knock anyone on the team but it appears that the tryouts are secret, or under publicized. There is also a cynical element that those running the team are affiliated with certain specific travel programs, have an agenda for that travel program, and things being what they are the impression is that some of those players get an inside track into making the team. Some of the kids that did not try out had tried out in previous seasons only to be cut. So perhaps they decided not to return. I will say that it appears that some of the high school players who made the team are not neccessarily considered the best high school players on their team. That is odd or that the coaches based it on their travel experience and completely disregarded the high school talent.
The team has done well overall so complaints will fall on deaf ears. I look at the roster and I`m sure everyone on it can play at that level, but I doubt it is nearly as strong of a team that could be put together if it was done on a fairer basis. I would go on to say that another team could probably be put together of those not on the team that would be as good or probably better.
As a father of a first time tryout kid who made it this year, I can attest to the fact that it is not very well publicized. We found out by word of mouth in December and then asked for an application. We had to attach a team schedule so my son could be viewed (don’t know if they did it). They then sent us an invite for tryouts. Many kids, including Olivario, did not know about it. I agree with Fanotgame that many players did not tryout or left in the middle of tryouts or post-tryout practices due to oher conflicts (showcases, etc.). That is not fault of HV. We don’t have the best team we could get, but from sources at LI and NYC teams they have similar complaints about missing kids due to conflicts. Most of the kids are 91s or 90s this year, so many slots will be open for next year now that kids may be more informed.
Many worthy players filled out the paperwork and just never got invited, so i wouldn’t call players that weren’t at the tryouts no-shows. Sganga, Halpin, Miele, Oliverio, Pesce, along with many others including Mastracola, Dorgan, Sherding, Blatt, and goalies Glaviano, Feliu, and Benincasa are all vipers. Were any of them at any tryouts? I know personally that atleast 5 of these guys filled out the paperwork and didn’t get invited. They are not the only team or the only players that didn’t get invites. I just wrote this when icetime was mentioned. Their midget teams have been rivals for a while and don’t like eachother. Just 1 personal example of politics.
Dont take it personally, unless you are with their travel programs you are not considered as good. It makes sense, and in a way you cannot blame these guys. They are not going to cut the top players on their travel programs, it bad for business to do that. Maybe a selling point for their travel program is that they get a bunch of kids on the team. I think its just one of those things and it is what it is
Wow Western lost 3-1 to adirondack theres a shock
HV 8 NYC 0. lets go HV BABY
Invites
As noted earlier, Oliverio did not know about tryouts and therefore could not go. Blatt was at tryouts and did not make cut. I also don’t believe Pesce knew about or could make tryouts. As far as others on your listing, I do not know their stories.
First day’s results were somewhat surprising, with Adirondock beating West 3-1, large score with HV over NYC and not so surprising Central beat LI 4-2. Tomorrow is highlighted by West vs HV and Central vs. Adirondock.
Empire hockey tryouts have long been suspected of being biased. This perception is hard to combat with invitation or closed tryouts.
Lacrosse has open tryouts, I don’t know about baseball.
I will say this about hockey tryouts. It is very hard to distinguish talent levels with 50 kids on the ice. Their will be a couple of standouts and a couple “ankle benders”. Those are the easy ones to see.
It’s the 40 kids in the middle that all look the same, and if you attend a “select” tryout you probably have pretty good game at some level.
Drills or scrimmages over a couple of tryouts will not necessarily categorize the players into where they belong. Some better kids may look weak at a certain drill or scrimmage (or make an uncharacteristic bad play) and/or a weaker kid can have his strengths highlighted (great skater, no hands kind of player).
Some times reputation and recommendation are just necessary to select this type of team in such a short period of time. And for better or worse, a coach’s familiarity with a player is often enough to get on a team.
first of all HV Father, all those kids you just named suck and wouldnt have made the team anyway so stop making excuses for them. Go HV
The selection process is a sham. Many of these players DID know about the process and DID fill out the paperwork before December and DID speak to their coaches about dates and DID register on-line and DID make desperate calls to ESG and eventually to coach LLoyd. I’m talking about League 1/Section 1 players at the top of the stats leaders. They were ignored. And to say that you can’t pick a hockey team from 50 kids on the ice at once is nuts. It’s done all the time. You consider reputations and familiarity, sure, but you also get to see everyone. And that means everyone gets at least a shot. That’s not what goes on here.
HV will meet an angry Western team later today. Western outshot AD something like 45 to 17 and lost 3-1 for its fist loss in 5 years. AD quickly jumps into the medal picture. Might be a very close and interesing tourney among the top 5 teams. NYC looks to be lagging a bit. Starting HV goalie Gluck better strap everything on tight and get ready to play all world.
Nice job by the Ice Time kids last nite. From the scoresheet, it looks like they played well together. That was one other reason why they made the team. Line chemistry that is already in place from travel hockey is important when putting together a team on short notice.
In all likelihood a worthwhile player probably got cut from the team. Perhas this was undeserved and unfortunately this player will not experience what should be the positive atmosphere of these games.
But except for the kids who did not tryout (i.e., Willows, Natoli, Connors, Eck..) I’m not sure anyone else could have greatly improved the team.
It appears that one name keeps surfacing on this blog as someone who did not know about the tryouts. I assume he is a viper, his name begins with an “O” Not to critique him but he is not even one of the stronger kids ignored here. He is a nice player, my point is many kids, better than him were left out as well. Bringing his name up is fine, but there are at least 20-25 others better that were left out and in the dark
aint that the truth. it’s the same story i’ve heard from every interested family. total exclusion. not just of the registered players but of their top section 1 coaches as well. nobody had a clue. those that went up there on their own were literally shooed away in many cases.
Hudson Valley was one period away from a huge win, but Western scored three unanswered goals to win 4-2 today. Jordan Gluck (RCDS/Scarsdale) made 44 saves, and the first goal was all local, Zac Hiller (Suffern) from Jake Turrin (RCDS/Brewster) and Alex Hagen (Bronxville). Connor Leen put HV up 2-1 with 1:52 left in the second period, but Western pulled ahead quickly in the third.
All the medals are still very much up for grabs, especially if this is a down year for Western. Central is 2-0, and the next four teams are 1-1. If HV can somehow get past Andy Iles and Central tomorrow morning—and that’s obviously a big if—it could really finish with anything.
Most of the team is picked from 2 organizations which is out right nuts, for who ever said it makes sense, dont tell me the other organizations in the area dont have the players.
How does it make sense to keep most of these kids and leave better players out just because they dont play at Brewster and Ice Time, they have some good players no doubt but not enough of them to win.
Also if your coach does not contact LLoyd you wont get an invite(not guarenteed) unless he or the coach knows you from their past, period
Some choose not to tryout for what ever reason, but that doesnt mean they should blow off other good players because they dont play for their organizations.
This is past practice for yrs,I know first hand, my son played on the team 2 yrs ago when they won SILVER and lost a tough 3-1 game to Western. But 70 -80 pct of the roster was from those 2 organizations.
Final Score:
Western-4
HV-2
West beat HV today while out shooting HV 48-15. HV had 2-1 lead going into the 3rd but couldnt hold off a strong Western attack. We should be proud of our HV boys today
The boys hung tough, but were outshot badly. It looks like West has weak goaltending.
Very tough games for the HV kids. Outshot 18-1 in the first, but scoreless. We had about 7 penalties in first and 14 for the game. Down 5-3 twice in first. Up 2-1 after two with shots at 37-7. After they cut the ice, Western caught a few breaks including one misdirected puck off of a stick. Still time to capture a medal if we be AD and LI (even if we lose to Cen). We even got them to change goalies after two. Hope for the best.
WESTERN 4 HV 2
shots 48-15
To HV why should you be proud you got out shot 48-17 if it wasn’t for our week goalies we would have won 4-0 it was a dominated game by us i still don’t know how you even had the lead, wow if you guys are proud over that you must have been going crazy yesterday
Medals
Five way battle now for medals. LI beat NYC 17 zip in last game of day. 3 teams now 1-1 with Central 2-0.
Another tough game. Lost to undefeated Central 2-1. In better shape than yesterday, although outshot again 32-21. Almost put in tying goal a few times. Need to beat AD and LI for medal.
Too bad, if HV put out the best team possible they`d have a chance for gold. NO QUESTION. Too bad its a flawed system. They are playing as good as they can, and they work, but they are short on talent and depth due to the administrations committment to politics and travel hockey.
Good luck this afternoon, I`m rooting for you guys!
Too bad HV didn’t have Salt, King, Ruthberg, Touhey, Willows. Could of had a real competitive team.
By the way, I can’t believe ALL THE WHINERS out there! The Empires have been taking place for years. I can’t accept the excuse that kids did not know that tryouts were taking place. Anyone that has been doing Travel KNOWS THE PROCESS!
Your Scanga’s, Halpin, Miele, Oliverio, Pesce, Mastracola, Dorgan, Sherding, Blatt, Glaviano, Feliu, and Benincasa are just OK players. The only player that that might of had a legitimate shot was maybe Halpin. This is high level hockey, do you really think that any of the players just mentioned are even close in hockey ability to Salt, King, Ruthberg, Natoli, Reagan, and Willows. I don’t think so. And I doubt they excluded these kids because they played for the Vipers.
King and Ruthberg are not even good, stop praising all these section 1 and CHSHL high scorers, section 1 is a joke
Agree with you Imagine, Halpin probably could have helped this team as one of the best pure breakout defensemen, they probably could have used his clearing the zone skills in the lopsided shot game. I think Olivero’s work ethic and hustle could have helped too.
But, I think these 2 play on a bunch of different summer travel teams as it is. And why not, as we see there are many flaws in the whole Empire process and have been for the past 20 years, so who needs it.
Don’t you think there is a reason why the other teams can attract and roster the area’s best players and we never could here in Hudson Valley,
So good luck to the this years HV team, lets not disrespect those players that make up this years squad, as there are some good ones, and heres to hoping one of these years HV finally figures out a good process, its been a long time coming
wow,
Looks like you have no idea who is considered good. I have played against and watched these two players for years. They are both VERY good players who have excelled at this sport for years. If you don’t think that these two players are good, I would like to know what you have been drinking. Especially these two players who have had unbelieveable success in travel, Juniors and High school.
AMAZING! Looks like we have someone who is a little jealous?
who cares about the ESG look what is happening this year we are getting beat bad and dont say oh 4-2 and 2-1 are close conssidering combined we were outshot 80-36 and NYC is just terrible so we will get 5th place this year and yes we are missing some good players Willows, Olivero, Halpin, Pesce, Prunesti, Ruthberg and many more.
wow,
It’s clear you have “NO” idea what you’re talking about. If we had Ruthberg, Salt and King on this years Empire team. WE would of been very competitive.
For you to say that King and Ruthberg aren’t good makes me think that you’re a FRUSTRATED player who gets No recognition. To pick on two players who have been very dominate in travel and high school hockey for the past three years makes me think that you have no idea what you’re talking about.
Didn’t King and Ruthberg make 1st team ALL COunty this year. ANd if I’m not mistaken, I think King made 1st team All COunty in his junior year. How many players do you know have made All COunty two years in a row.
But you sit there and say that these two players aren’t good. Who are you comparing them to? I guarantee you that there’s not a High School coach or Travel coach out there that wouldn’t want these two players on their team. Believe me, I know them both and they are two of the top players in the area.
Don`t sweat it, you know the routine around here. The only good players in this area are the travel players. Nobody else is any good unless you play travel. Those playing and $$$ paying for travel have to justify all that running around. So therefore only the travel are gifted, everyone else stinks.
AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ive spoken to players from both of their teams and they say that both of them are overrated..im not saying they arent good, they just arent elite players
Hudson Valley with BIG win against Adirondack
Score:
HV: 3
ADK: 0
Big game for HV today, the goals were all local. The first coming from Zack Hiller. The second was a rocket by Frank Dimaggio. And the 3rd goal was an empty netter by Jake Turrin. Big shutout for another local, Jordan Gluck, he made 40 saves.
I guess this team is legit?? Going for the Bronze tommorow against Long Island.
jordan gluck is god – zack hiller
The most exciting game for HV so far in tournament. Game was scoreless going into the 3rd. Zac H scored in third followed by rocket by Frankie D and then the open netter by Jake T. We had two man advantage in third and then were shorthanded. Very exciting ending. Ad outshot us 40-32. Tomorrow is now meaningful.
cerbino is a herb
Jordan is good, but if he is God what is Natoli?
Poster Wow,
you are discussing Ruthberg and King correct? Well, there are two players on this years ESG team that were team mates of Ruthberg and King last year. While both ESG players are good, the BEST player or most valuable forward on their teams were Ruthberg and King. So therefore, the two that are on ESG (and they are great players) are arguably the second best forwsrd on their team. So to say that Ruthberg and King arent elite players, well, they are certainly better than many of the forwards on the current team.
Their two teammates are two of the top forwards on ESG, I am sure Ruthberg and King would have been in the top 4
If Glaser was the Goa;ie they would be playing for Gold tomorrow Go HV
I think they would be playing for Gold if they had the best kids from our area. They have some good ones, but there several secondary type kids on the roster. Its missing some of the top players in the area. I think the goaltending has been pretty good. I think the forwards and D have done fine, but clearly the roster could have been much stronger than it is
you clearly did not watch a suffern hockey game once this season
i was messing around person who took the comment as if he was actually god. But Cerbino is definitely a herb
The Mamaroneck coach has to stop posting ehre about Glaser. Glaser is not good. Gluck is better. This is straight from the dorms up at Binghamton room 305 represent
If Central beats Western to remain undefeated, isn’t the HV/LI game for silver? If HV wins, both HV and LI would be the only 3-2 teams and HV would have won the head to head. If HV/LI tie, I think LI (3-1-1)gets silver and HV (2-2-1) gets the bronze. If HV loses and AD beats scoreless NYC, then you have some messy tiebreaker between three 2-3 teams (HV, Western, AD)who have beat each other for the bronze. HV probably wins that tiebreaker as they lost to Western by 2 and beat AD by 3 (+1), while Western beat HV by 2 and lost to AD by 2 (E)and AD lost to HV by 3 and beat Western by 2 (-1). Turrin’s empty netter vs. AD might be medal clutch.
In short, HV gets silver with a win vs. LI coupled with a Central win vs. Western. HV gets bronze as long as Western wins.
Hasn’t Central already clinched a gold? They can finish no worse than 4-1 and LI no better than 4-1 and Central beat LI. For HV sake, lets hope Central plays hard vs. Western.
Heck of a tourney.
Fanotgame
I think you are right. There are possibilities of silver, bronze or nothing. Obviously, a win assures a medal. A loss could mean nothing or bronze, depending upon West game. Let’s hope for the best. Hopefully the third period HV team of yesteday shows up.
LI-4 HV-1.
What can you say…... They tried.
Seems like they just didn’t have enough scoring threats against the the top teams….If you had Willows, Salt, Ruthberg, King, Eck and one of the goalies (Natoli or Regan), they would of won it all. Oh well, maybe next year.
I was wishing hard for the team this weekend. They played tough. It looks as though the politics did in fact backfire on the administration. Giving your travel kids a leg up on the tryout and having them get in on the ground floor certainly helps these specific travel teams. Its now obvious by the finished product that some strong players were omitted and thats why the team did not medal for the first time in a long time. Maybe the politics will go away next year and the team is more representative of the areas talent regardless of wheather they play travel or play on the favored travel teams
Our boys took home the bronze!!
Goaltending was definetly not an issue
Empires,
Looks like goal tending was good. Big problem was scoring. If you pull out the NYC game, the team Averaged less than 2 goals a game.
TOO bad a few of our top scorers in the area didn’t play. They could of helped. But I understand if those seniors didn’t go out because of the committment. Also, I hear a fws of them were playing in the Chowder Cup.
Wonder how they did?
I thought they played fine. Now that the games are over, heres a point I would like to make. I am a private school fan. So I follow Rcds the league Iona and Fordham are in and I follow the Section 1 stuff. I have no idea about the prep school players on the roster. It seems to me that the ESG roster for HV had about 8 players from a combination of Section 1 and the local privates. Those eight are good players but not all were even the best players from those leagues or schools. That was puzzling. Without mentioning names the Section 1 players were great but not the best the Section 1 has. Same with the privates, those kids are great but there are other talents that could have been there and assisted in winning this tournament. Maybe a series of tryouts needs to take place? I`m sure much of the problem is logistics of getting so many candidates in a tryout. Although it is odd that some players selected are not the best players on their own high school team, thats something I cannot understand
By any chance does anyone know where i could find statistics for the games to see who played well and what not? I am also very interested in seeing if +/- was kept and how each kid did with that stat.
HV supporter,
If you go to the Empire States Games in Yahoo, and then press Summer games. Then go down to Results and click on Ice Hockey. You will find some stats. Just basically goals and assists for all games, They don’t keep track of +/-.
From looking at those posted stats, Zac Hiller had a very strong tourney. His line will be difficult to manage this coming season. Also looked like Gluck played very well in goal. He is a ‘92 and eligible again next year. Congrats on the bronze. Just what I thought would happen, except LI a little stronger and Western a little weaker than expected.
HEY WESTERN
how does it feel to be on THE first western team to NOT win a gold medal??
wait wait did you guys even win a medal at all… oh that right, you blew it with 11 seconds and gave HV the bronze
hahaha way to go western, maybe you shouldnt talk about how much better you are then us considering you didnt take anything home
GO HV 305 represent
and also to whoever is blowing glaser..
gluck is by far better than him and maybe you should watch him play before you say glaser is better, gluck stood on his head everygame and you need to shut your mouth
What was HV record in the games? 2-3? boy, lucky that was good enough to qualify for a bronze
Maybe the record wasn’t the best, but the tourney was very even. HV played gold medal Central very tough, losing 2-1 on a third period goal. HV had a tough game vs. Silver medal LI, but LI returned 11 players from a team that played well last year. Good for them. The big game for HV ended up being the 3-0 win over AD. Without Gluck’s shutout and Turrin’s empty netter a the end, there is no medal. So much for bashing RCDS. Those 2 played well in Binghamton.
How does an empty netter in a 3-0 game save the bronze medal?
Makes the goal differential between the three 2-3 teams tied for a bronze (HV, Western, AD) for HV go from an E to a +1. Just enuf to break the tie in HV’s favor. Western was E and AD was -1. So, without the empty netter, HV and Western are both E and Western beat HV head up. Western also would have won bronze had they held on for the tie vs. Central instead of giving up the losing goal with 12 sec left in the 3rd.
With the exception of a weaker NYC team, this was a very good 5 team tourney with lots of competitive games.
Fanotgame
You are totally correct. It was very exciting and we missed you. Maybe next year we all go back and change the color. I think about half the team is still eligible. See you soon.
Yes, those two played well, but so did others, and the others are mostly complimentary players on their teams, not the stars.
is there anywhere where we can find pictures from this tourney?
Thank you. Unfortunately there was no +/- stat but looks like the section 1 line led the squad to their bronze medal. I believe Hiller led the team with 6 points followed by his linemate Hagen with 5 and Canterbury star Cerbino with 4. Great Job to the whole team.
Yes, maybe with the success of the Section 1 kids will allow the ESG coaching staff to actually give some of those bottom feeders a shot at the tryouts next season.
There is a lot of talent that could have helped the cause if only they were given a fair chance. Talent is not exclusive to travel hockey
All of the top hockey players are probably playing travel hockey, unless they go to a prep school and may not be able to play. What players are you thinking of that could have made the team that don’t play travel hockey? It does not sound reasonable that they could find the competition they need to get better without playing a travel program.
somebody
I have not seen any pictures in Journal News. I have some personal pictures I took.
Kudos to the Hudson Valley team for taking the Bronze. Congrats to all the players. Seemed like Suffern’s Hiller was one of the best forwards on the team, and his name came up in a lot of the stats. Hagen also did well stats wise. Those 2 should be two of the top players in Section 1 this year and be the go-to guys on their team.
Once again, congrats HV!
Hopefully they keep the same age eligibilty as this year for the teams sake lol
HEY WESTERN
how does it feel to be on THE first western team to NOT win a gold medal??
wait wait did you guys even win a medal at all… oh that right, you blew it with 11 seconds and gave HV the bronze
hahaha way to go western, maybe you shouldnt talk about how much better you are then us considering you didnt take anything home
GO HV 305 represent
and also to whoever is blowing glaser..
gluck is by far better than him and maybe you should watch him play before you say glaser is better, gluck stood on his head everygame and you need to shut your mouth
HELL YEA TO ALL OF THAT
Glaser is better. He doesnt jump from high to high school either
To ESG player- The Empire eligibility rules say that next year’s cutoff date is Aug 31 (like all other sports except boys ice hockey this year). So, to be eligible next year, you must not have turned 18 years of age by August 31, 2009. Need to have a late ‘91 birth date or later to be eligible.
yea i no..thats why im saying they should keep it as this year with april lol
I think that is what a bunch of posters said on this blog once they understood that ‘91 birth year kids born between May 1 and Aug 31 would have the double whammy of having to compete this past year against ‘90 birth year kids born between May 1 and Aug 31 and then lose the chance to try out next year. The only way to get boys ice hockey back on track eligibility wise (so they have the same rule as all other sports), is to make that switch sometime. The Empire games have decided to make that switch next season. If, for example, they waited another year and let ‘91s born between May 1 and Aug 31 compete next year, then the ‘92s born between May 1 and Aug 31 would have the disadvantage. Some age group has to have the disadvantage sometime if you make the switch. Without a switch sometime soon, you have one rule for boys hockey and another rule for everyone else. And that seems a little strange.
He was in Scarsdale first. Then went to Iona. Now he is at RCDS.
Nobody does that
3 high schools and he is a 92 birth year? Is that possible. Did he play (scarsdale?) varsity as an 8th grader?
Any way it shouldn’t matter. They are all good schools and it is very common to switch schools to improve your hockey situation. That could be a player going to private or prep for more difficult competition, or players leaving private and prep for more playing opportunities in public school.
Based on his showing in empires, he probably has a good hockey future..if not in D1 or D3, certainly at a good college club level..
Iona and RCDS??
improve your situation? You want to improve your situation? go to Suffern, Mamaroneck, Pelham or Rye. Or better yet go to Prep school. I`d hardly call moving to RCDS improving your hockey situation
That would require his family to sell their home and move to those districts. Quite a sacrifice, when it is easier to just go to one of the local privates.
Scarsdale is a very good school with a respectable hockey program, but like most public schools its competitivenes varies year-to-year. It’s only my opinion, but I’d place Iona and RCDS on a hockey level above Scarsdale.
Not sure if he would have played a lot in 9th grade at Scarsdale as they had a pretty good upper classman goalie.
At Iona he was a JV kid, but right now he`d be the guy. At RCDS that team is not that strong and is on the down cycle especailly losing another strong player this year. Plus, they play nobody.
Out of the three RCDS will give him the most practice ice. Iona does not practice that much and Scarsdale would be a place where he`d be the #1 guy now
YOU are wrong he never attended scarsdale high school u dumbass
RCDS plays nobody? they play prep schools liek Brunswick, Worcester Academy, Kents Hill, North Yarmouhth…etc. these schools honesty would beat most publics schools if not all. Brunswick played Trinity Pawling this yea which is a D1 prep school and had a good game, and Worcester BEAT Andover this year which is a very good D1 team, and then RCDS beat Worcester. So i suggest you learn about the topics you are discussing before posting on this blog.
RCDS plays the lowest level of Prep schools. Have they beaten Suffern or Mamaroneck yet?
Regarding the goalie, he went to Scarsdale middle school, and left the Scarsdale school district going into 9th grade to go to Iona, which is puzzling since Scarsdale high school is one of the top schools in the nation. He was at Iona for a year, then went to RCDS. So thats 3 school districts.
All 3 of those high schools are good academic schools, even the one he never attended, which you inferred earlier that he did.
As a hockey player, and apparently a good one based on his empire performance, going to a private school is very common. Him and his family felt perhaps that hockey-wise Iona and/or RCDS were a better fit and the academics were still good.
Even if IP and RCDS are not Mamaraneck or Suffern, with all due respect Scarsdale is also not in there league also.
Not that i am in love w/ glaser but why are people knocking him considering he was on the team that won the section when you knock him your knocking the whole section now i haven’t seen gluck play but i think it’s safe to say natoli and reagan are better then both of them hands down well at least travel wise
To common sense- Time will tell. Natoli and Reagan are ‘90 birth year kids. Glaser is a ‘91 and Gluck a ‘92. Glaser is a multisport player. Hockey may not be his primary focus. I have heard he is a very good baseball player. If Gluck grows and fills out, and continues to work hard, he could be a top notch goalie that plays at the Natoli/Reagan level.
High school wise too.
Talked to some college and Junior scouts who were at Empires last weekend. Three promanent guys suggested that this was one of the weakest games in quite some time. So basing anyones success on this years games is probably irrelevant
mr.or mrs. “scarsdale schools”.
..somehow i don’t get the feeling your disappointment with the goalie is not in him getting the best education he possibly could..
Well,
now that you brought it up, anyone who thinks Iona Prep or Rye Country Day are better schools than Scarsdale really does not know much about education. I think its sort of ridiculous to base your choice of something as critical as high school on sports. Academics should come first. Unless you are an Olympic claibre athlete. Especially in hockey where you can always find good quality travel teams to play for
off the highschool topic, Who would you say was HV’s MVP that led them to Bronze?
it is “Zac Hiller” not “Zack Hiller”
Rye Country Day is a much better school than Scarsdale. RCDS is one of the most well respected schools in the country.
when Scarsdale High School recieved national attention for being on the front page of the New York Times for their homecoming dance…
Just the fact that gluck moved to 3 different schools it shows that he either has a problem every where he goes wether it be on or off the ice or he maybe just like hoping schools for education reasons which i doubt
to fanotgame
your right time will tell for gluck. Glaser i doubt just because he plays another sport it is hard enough to focus on one. Gluck might have a shot but needs to stick at one place for more then a year or however long he stays
he MOVED to 2 different schools. he moved to iona for hockey. he moved to RCDS for hockey+education
You guys are jokers, especially the one about RCDS being better educationally than Scarsdale. That is so dumb it doesnt even warrant a comeback
Get real. Gluck is just OK. It’s amazing anyone is talking about him. He’s no Bennacasa, Reagan, Natoli or McIndoe. If that’s who you think is the top goalie around here then the Hockey season is going to be a long one!
When he was at Iona, he played JV. And was terrible. Then he left and went to RCDS. He changes schools like he changes travel teams.
Jordan Gluck has verbally committed to Uranus University for the fall of 2014. Most likely will play one year and then sign with the U 46 universe team and compete in senior good will games.
How was he terrible at JV…you people who have never seen him play have no idea what youre talking about at least give the kid a chance. This is High School hockey stop making it into a fight. These kids are all from our area and we should support them
Honestly Section 1 is right he is not even in the class of Reagan, Natoli. I still don’t see why people like him so much I mean he had a good empires but they still had a losing record. Also RCDS is a good school but not great I mean if its so great why did Pesce leave and they would be in the middle of league 1 if they played their. If you look at the schedule they lost to Mamo 6-3 however they did shutout IP and CN
When Iona Prep or Suffern or Mamaroneck play a team like RCDS they have xertain goals and things they want to accomplish. When RCDS plays Iona Prep Suffern or Mamaroneck they have an entirely set of different goals. They are and have been on a mission to prove that they are the top hockey school in the area. They are always looking for publicity and always looking for respect and approval from the hockey teams in the area. Therefore, these games become big and they play their best against those teams. Its a recruiting tool for them. They want to be able to gain respect by saying they are better than the top teams that are getting all the attention. Keep in mind Rye Country Day really has no exciting playoffs like Section 1 or Iona has that are covered in the papers. They also have no really big games on their regular schedule that would draw attention. They also have a long break during mid December to early January which keep them in the background.
The Section 1 teams and Iona play them but really get nothing out of it other than a non league game. So theres not that much incentive there. They try to win I`m sure, but I had two coaches who play RCDS tell me they do it to get good competition as RCDS is usually competitive with middle league 1 teams, and they play them to look at other players and get some guys more playing time.
One indictment I always thought of was that for a school that is supposed to be so strong academically and I think its above average and for a school that has its own rink why do they not draw that many players from Rye Mamaroneck and that area? Its right in Rye and its a day school. That tells me a lot about it right there. I think when Effinger was there the hockey was extemely good now its watered down quite a bit.
He left because he hated the school not because of the hockey
Wow,
tells you alot about RCDS
Pesce is going to one of the areas top public schools for academics in Irvington, he will also be reunited w/ his little bro who as an 8th grader and had a big impact on the team after playing only about half the games due to a broken bone he got in travel. Then you add Halpin, and their other young players (I don’t think they lost too many seniors) and SH/I may a great team next year.
mark my words, mamaroneck will win section 1 again next year…
Section1,
You’re right about Gluck. Not only does he change schools but he rotates travel teams. ANd he can’t make any of the good ones! So what does that tell you about him.
But then again, what goalie around here, is playing for any good travel teams. Is any off them playing for any Junior teams?
By the way “CHAMPIONS” how many of the Tigers made this years Empires?? I think the answer is “0”. LOL
Wait how did Gluck not make any good teams???
He played AAA hockey in Long Island for 2 years, and then chose to come closer to home for commuting purposes. you people truly have no idea what youre talking about.
not sure??? ,
And did he play? Answer “NO”! GOt lit up like a Birthday cake…. ANd can’t make any top teams around here! Who is he playing for this year?????????
not sure,
You must be Gluck’s parent. Tell me this, in all his travel days, what championships has he led his teams to? From the people I know in Long Island and around Westchester, they never heard of him do anything.
Please enlighten us? And I think he came closer to Westchester, because he couldn’t make any other teams…..
Besides a state championship last year…im not sure. But i know he has succeeded at this level. And this year he is playing for the Westchester Mariners 18UAA
why do you hate Gluck so much? And what top teams are there to make around here anyway. And what teams did he tryout for, and not make?
Those who are on this blog pumping up the ETB forward and the Scarsdale/Iona/RCDS/whats next? Empire players have missed their calling.
They should go into Public relations or become agents. The stuff and the hot air about these two ordinary hockey players is actually funny.
The forward is on the small side but is a nice high school hockey and solid travel player who looked like he was in the top 25 of Section 1 forwards. The goalie is a solid high school goalie. Neither is in the top ten in the area at their position. I wish them luck, will root for them to accomplish whatever goals they seek, but they right now are facing a situation where there are PLENTY of players just in the metro NY area as good or better than them. Once they master this area, which will be tough and certainly not guaranteed they then must take on the State, followed by all the hockey hot beds in the US, then Canada and the international students from abroad.
Those pumping these kids need to get out of the house more and truly gauge the competition outside of the metro area. Believe it or not there are thousands of players all over the world that can play, and their are only a certain number of spots available. You need to be CLEARLY the VERY BEST in our little fish bowl, and even if you are, there are no guarantees once you step outside of our little area. Respect what outs there, don`t be foolish and drink all the kool aid
SH/I should have a good team next year and should be the League 4 favorites.
I’d wish the section could wait longer to decide the league set-ups. SH/I would be better off competing in league 3 and Clarkstown South might be better off in league 4.
Both Gluck and Hagen are in the top 10 in their position in the area
Yeah can somebody name 10 high school goalies goalies better than Gluck? I dont think i can
gluck, glaser, delavergne all seem to be on the same level with delavergne and gluck both being 92s. Dont say Reagan or Natoli because they no longer qualify as High School goalies. Benincasa is good. McIndoe is also very solid may be better than Gluck im not sure. But I can highly doubt that anyone can honestly name 10 better high school goalies in the area.
can u play on the empire team next year if u turn 18 in sept, oct, nov, and dec
empiers
Based upon the rules going back to prior age limits, the players in 2009 who turn 18 after Aug 31 of 2009 are eligible to play in ESG.
Yes, I meant to say that the RCDS goalie is not at the highest level. I guess he is in the top ten in high school, but not at the highest level.
The ETB forward was has a pretty good PR machine behind him, heres the dilly on that.
without mentioning names as thats not what I do
here are the teams with forwards just as good our better. If you know the league you`ll know who I mean
CLarkstown North has 1
John Jay has 1
Mahopac has 1
Mamaroneck has 2
Pelham has 1
Rye town harrison has 1
Rye has 1
Suffern has 2
Scarsdale has 1
Yorktown has 1
New rochelle has at least 2
Iona has 2
Pawling has 1
Somers has 1
North Rockland has 1
Hagen was at the usa hockey u 16 national camp a few weeks ago getting 3 assists in 4 games. Prunesti is at the u14 national camp now with 1 goal in 1 game. I looked but didn’t find Willows in the u17 camp. The point of that is to show these players are impressing people that actually matter, not parents and players in section 1 like me and you (and most of us have no idea what we’re talking about). Besides, the reason so many people dislike Hagen is because he missed like 10 games or something this year for travel and people were offended and saying he should care more about high school then travel and some people even said things like “he doesn’t want to play travel, his dad is forcing him”. People just want to downplay his abilities to make it seem like they or there kids can play at the same level as him.
Prunesti has not had the same criticism as hagen, but he was at most of his highschool games. Also the fact that he was a freshman that came out of nowhere (Nobody on New Ro knew about him till he came to practice and sniped the goalies pants off) helped him. He may have to start missing high school games for travel stuff like Hagen and Rui did last season, but hopefully not.
Anyway, people that see them play high school will always say they are overrated, but scouts dont seem to think so.
Many people believe Hagen is overrated but he is a very good young player. And as for the RCDS goalie, most people dont like him because he switched schools more than they think is right to do.I say, WHO CARES. As long as hes getting better and trying to improve his situation why do you all care what school or how many times he changed his school. Hes a very underrated goalie who I think many people should go see play before criticizing.
I don`t dislike either player. I just come on here and read a load of stuff of other people pumping these guys up like they are clearly separated from the rest of the strongest players in our area. The ETB forward and the RCDS are great players no question. but to suggest they are separted from the pack of the best in the area is false.
I see both play, and against their peers in high school games they look ok, but they do not look like the absolute best at their positions. The times I saw the forward against good high school competition he looked awfully ordinary especially on the defense side of the game.
SUFFERN WILL BE SECTION CHAMPS THIS YEAR FOR SOMETHING LIKE THE 30TH TIME!!!!!!!!! I HOPE MAMARONECK ENJOYED THEIR VICTORY, IT WON’T HAPPEN THIS YEAR. AND LETS PLEASE STOP TALKING ABOUT PLAYERS ON LEAGUE 4 AND HALF ASS PREP SCHOOLS, THEY AREN’T NEARLY AS GOOD AS ANYONE ON SUFFERN!!!! GO MOUNTIES!!!!!!
champs brings up a good point. None of these players play for suffern so why do we care about them? If there parents were smart, they would have moved to suffern so they can actually become descent hockey players. Its about time somebody said what everybody else is too stupid to understand. Thank you champs. You are the reason everybody likes suffern.
If champs was really from Suffern, the would know exactly how many section championships have been earned. My guess it’s someone from another school-usual attempt at haymaker stuff
gluck played with the mariners u18 at a tourney up in marlborough back in the beginning of may. had a real strong showing there also beating the new roc patriots in the semi finals and then losing a nailbiter in the championship. that mariner tournament team was also an excellent team that weekend with many talented players
To champs and good point
people should go to suffern to become better hockey players? well those 2 kids mention by national camp hagen and prunesti they are being scouted by USA Hockey guys and playing at select camps and AAA Hockey tell me how many players on Suffern are at USA Hockey national camps and playing for good AAA teams
cant wait till suffern plays mamk this year. suffern is looking for big revenge
good point was being sarcastic.
you continue to impress me. i like you ‘common sense.’ you’re the kind of person that I wish I had as a consultant. whatever you recommend, I’d do the exact opposite and as a result, would lead a life full of common sense.
to common sense has none
how do I have no common sense is what I said not true and if it is tell me how
to champs
u r a flippin retard
those half “good prep” schools can and will beat u… RCDS has plenty of players that r as good as or better than ur players… suffern LOST this yea—- just get over it.. and they wont beat rcds next year wen they play them
RCDS probably wont play Suffern this year..but lets get off this RCDS fight…nobody will ever agree on them so just leave it
Jeez Champs, its pretty sad when your whole town lives for High School Hockey
mamaroneck will win section 1 with ease. they will have the four best d in section 1 – hagan, zweig, gardiner, christiansen. their first 2 lines will be stacked with jackson, fine, glaser, marr, and has anyone seen conners brother play recently, wow is all i can say. all of that on top of glasers great goaltending. who does suffern have?
to champs and common sense has none
whats the matter why arent you saying anything back because what you know you said was wrong
mark your calenders.. 1.10.09 suffern vs. mamo 8:10
hommocks...... 2.20.09 7:00sportoramaTo gearing up
Did the coach of your team give you the schedule or is there a website that has all the teams schedules
to common sense
go to sportspakdb.lhric.org/gameschedules
its only the scheduled league games
to common sense
sorry its actually
sportspakdb.lhric.org/gameschedule.asp
mamaroneck will deffinetly not have the best 4 defenseman in section 1. besides hagan, kevin norwin is the next best in section 1, he had an outstanding year last year and i thought he was sufferns top defenseman after ojeda. this kid is something special and he was also on the empire practice team but was probaly better than one or two of the defenseman on HV. he is a great all around player and look for him to make an impact this year
suffern also has Hiller who is better than anyone on mamaroneck without question. He is probaly the best player in league 1 this year. Johnny Hill is also better than anyone on mamo and has a awesome shot. also from what ive seen and heard, jackson isnt good and will not make an impact this year. hes nothing without conner just like every other player on mamaroneck
Nice to see the Mamo /Suffern back and forth banter. But, this is not a two team league. All of league 1 will be pretty tight this year. RTH seems a bit behind, but they will find a way to be competitive. They always do. My vote for best defense is Pelham. Their first pair (Duffy/Dzenis) both play jr B (Apple Core and PAL). Duffy was on Empire team. Dzenis would probably have made it had he tried out. The Pelican second pair (Mamone/ Harms) is solid if not spectacular. Would be first pair on a lot of teams. Expect Pelham to keep all games close with those blue liners.
thanks gearing up
And wow still no comments from champs or from common sense has none
To number 1 and mamaroneck, I like the young players Norwin, Gardiner and Christiansen. They will all be impact players. But, there are a bunch of pretty good D men you may not know that much about lurking in Section 1. Other than the aforementioned Hagen, Duffy and Dzenis, there are Sganga, Meany, Halpin, McNamara, Ciotti and Meile who all currently play at a level above the younger kids from Suffern and Mamo.
To Everyone
Just a little tidbit for you all, I have read this blog for a while and while their might be plenty of what you people call good players in the area weather its Sec1 LG1 OR LG4 or Prep school or what many think is good Hockey in the Catholic League(not),their wont be many playing in College at D3 or D1 which out of reach for pretty much anyone down this way.
Playing club will be where they finish and for most it will be lower club teams at what ever College they go to.Their will be a few who get a shot at D1 club which in most cases is very competitive as are some Good D2 programs.
So stop debating where kids are going and at what level College they will play at.
Their have only been a hand few of these kids play at the next level weather it was D3 OR D1(which their has not been a handful).
I have personally gone through this with my son, who I will only say played in Sec.1, these are facts believe them or not.
PS Most of the players down this way rarely get any looks unless they play in a great travel program.
So when you bring up the name of some freshman who lit up LG4 and then say he has a shot playing college, take a good look at what is out there ,their is always someone better, this is also a fact believe it or not.
Making it to either D1 or D3 in any sport is difficult. I think anyone who frequents this blog is aware that only a handful at best get to an NCAA varsity program. What I think should be even clearer is that it is not for any of us to discourage any of the HS players from attempting to attain this goal. None of us are qualified to determine who can or cannot make it. If anyone chooses to post positive support for a local player…..good. Most of the players have worked hard and deserve the recognition and support.
Constantly reiterating how difficult collegiate hockey is to attain is merely restating the obvious.
to number 1
just wait and see what mamaroneck does next year and u cant say we are nothing without conner. jackson is good and can score same with glaser and fine. where also going to get scoring from hagen and zwieg at the point. they also have one of the best goalies in the league to so if they score 3 goals a game they will win since they have good enough defense.
I am a little late on this posting but I would have figured that the moderator of this blog would make sure that a player’s H.S. team would be accurately reflected when reporting. Alex Hagen plays for ETB, not Bronxville. A little school recognition would be nice . . .
to for the record
you are absolutly right, however some kids mentioned in this blog are pretty good players travel wise like Hagen I know is playing for the Bobcats junior A team next year Cambria is playing junior B this year, Prunesti is playing Junior A next year and some kids last year who graduated are playing Junior A [rui reagan natoli]
Don’t forget about CN. CN could take down Suffern or Mamaroneck on a good day next year for three reasons: Willows, Shuman and McIndoe
Just so everyone knows you will see a lot more players stand out on Mamk, because last year Conner completly took the spot light and Hagan usually got the credit on D, so quiet but deadly players like C.Glaser, Fine, Zweig, Jackson(out most of last season) will stand out more a get the credit they deserve, all of these key Mamk players were hiding under the shadow of Conner. Last year it was conner, conner, conner all year, so Mamk has some very underated individuals that will combine for a great team.
To Sec1fan and good players
I undestand what you are both saying and my point wasn’t to discourage anyone from trying to play at a higher level but that the way many people on the blog talk its like everyone who gets a all county award etc. will be playing college somewhere,Same goes for playing JR A OR B, their are many good JR A and B players that dont get a shot.
From what I have seen personally it sometimes becomes a right place right time senario.
Since NCAA varsity hockey is such a long shot, lets just concentrate on and enjoy the upcoming HS season. Can’t wait for the big crowds, great rivalry games and the bloggin. It really doesn’t get much better than that.
for the record
Everything you’ve said in your last 2 posts is fair and accurate. There are alot of boastful postings that don’t have much merit or are being made very prematurely. My point is that there is no need or purpose to dispute any of them. Maybe one of them will turn out to be true.
As for the right place right time, it might hold true in certain instances. The top players will make their way. Its the border line players that might need to be at the right place and time. The D1 guys get there. The D3 guys usually get there also. There are a few that might have gotten chosen over another borderline player if they had been at the right place and time.
I’m amazed at how these blogs continue to get attention. Here it is just about the slowest hockey time of the year.
In contrast, due to my interest in hs football, I also check up on the “VarityCentral” blog and it’s very quiet. This is during camp and pre-season scrimmage time, and just weeks before the season. The same low blogging occurs during basketball time.
I think the Journal News just continues to underestimate the popularity of hockey in this area.
To Travel Team- HS hockey has the benefit of grouping teams by talent level, not size. Like HS LAX does. Far to often, HS football games are a complete mismatch. I am a Rye HS fan. Their football team has not lost in Section in like 6 years. But, except for a special out of league rivalry game with Harrison, Rye football doesn’t get the chance to test themselves against some of the better football teams in the Section. So, not much to blog about.
Hiller and Hagen will be the two best players in the section hands down and they both are being recruited by NCAA teams.
highschool hockey
Which Hagen do you mean and what NCAA Teams are recruiting them.
yes I would also like to hear these NCAA teams lokking at Hagen and Hiller
sean hagan has been recruited to st. johns for baseball… but i havent heard about anyone else
Hagen for Baseball is fine, but you have to be honest he has a very hard shot but there is not much more to his game.
Hiller will be one of the best players in Sec.1 without any doubt but the problem is there have been many players over the yrs who were just as good and racked up points and did not go anywhere near playing college hockey.
This is not a rip on anyone, just fact.
Let’s also not forget the time commitment that a student athlete has to make to being a Varsity College Athlete. There have been several players with the possible talent that have decided not to give up the time needed at that next level. Being a Varsity Collegiate Athlete is a full time job itself and then add in academics and a social life. Only those truly committed take that next challenge. These days, it is simply not enough to be a stand out HS athlete but almost all US based hockey players need a year or two of Prep School or Junior Hockey (Real junior hockey such as the USHL) to complete. College coaches are looking for athletes who are willing to sacrifice for the sport and who have made that commitment. Graduating from HS and straight into college usually assures that athlete to compete against guys who are 19, 20, 21 years old Freshman.
Saying that guys in this area dont have the talent is in accurate. Saying that they (like almost the entire country) need more development is more accurate.
With regards to travel hockey… Yes, it is an excellent way to compete with top players and play another system of hockey. However, unless well scouted (which is rare) very few hockey players can truly point to that to moving along their careers. Despite what the travel coaches, parents and players want to believe… talk to a college coach.. the High School coaches and league play still is the predominant way that kids move up the ladder. This statement is not intended as a dig or slight on several of the excellent programs, players and coaches involved in travel hockey. In fact, the extra practice time and game time is essential for development… so please dont take it as an insult.
As far as the season coming up.. it should be interesting to see how the teams and leagues play out. It is a wonderful testament to the hockey fan base that this board is still so active!
WOW, Did Playland Balcony just say that HS hockey league play is the way to move to the next level? Was that post meant to address the sport of hockey? I hope not.
What player made it to the D1 collegiate level by making an impression on a college recruiter in a HS hockey game? Has anybody seen a D1 recruiter actually at a HS hockey game?
Travel hockey is a must. Thats where you develope the skills to compete at the levels where the scouts can be found.
I agree with the commitment to play college athletics,I know of a kid that played 2 sports as a freshman and at 18 was the youngest by 3 yrs on the hockey team, but his commitment was using up all his non class time to play 2 sports.
Never coming home on breaks for one, missing class for road trips etc.
Like you said if thats what the kid wants he will find a way.The kid above did.
I agree with sec1fan
High school hockey is supposed to be fun, and for kids who play competitive travel to relax and have fun representing their schools and it is not rare at all to see scouts at travel games ,maybe there won’t be scouts at a Rye Mariners game but at real travel hockey games there are always scouts and for those kids who don’t play travel, high school season is like travel to them which is fine, some kids might not want to commit to travel or some might not be good enough which is fine too
Sec 1 fan, I believe you missed the point of my post. With all the talk on the board of who playing ability and who is going D1 or D2, my posting was to highlight the fact that nobody from the area is LIKELY (not impossible) to play hockey without the extra years of Prep or Junior. That most college coaches want a player older, more mature and who has made a commitment. That said, my point was also, that while travel hockey is a great resource of playing and improving… that most college, prep and USHL coaches go through the high school coaches. And to answer the question, Yes, there have been college coaches many nights at Playland and Sport O Rama. Very often because the HS coaches have coordinated it or facilitated it. Three of the coaches in the area have done that and some of players have played as a result. Even players not expected to do so.
I did not say that travel hockey was bad. I said college coaches, real junior coaches and prep coaches tend to go through the high school programs as the level of travel hockey is inconsistent. I do not included the spring and summer showcases which several coaches are at.
Balcony
I am familiar with almost all of the local players that have moved on to Prep, Juniors and College. Most of the top players never played or played just their freshman year at a section 1 HS. I have been to many HS games at sporto and playland and have never seen a D1 college recruiter at any HS games…..NEVER. I’ve seen and spoken to several of them at travel team tournaments. Of course those tournaments are for AAA teams only and are held in new england (nationals is loaded with scouts including NHL). How do you even mention the USHL? What recent (recent is being loosely applied here) section 1 kids other then Foster and the Daniels twins have even flirted with the USHL? Only Foster’s placement in that league may have involved a HS coach or program. It is mind boggling that you infer that a USHL scout would be at a section 1 HS game, never mind a D1 recruiter.
There have been a few (very few) players that have gone on to a D3 program which was tied to their HS participation. Its not a significant number however. There is a small possibility that a prep coach might scout a HS game because his schedule made it convienient. They prefer to scout travel games (usually AAA or juniors). The competitive level of a HS hockey game is not a benchmark to evaluate talent!!!
I can continue with the discussion by pointing out the local talent that has moved on and what road they traveled on to get there (section 1’s best players moved on through other avenues besides HS hockey). I’d like to know from you what players have been recruited to D1, D3, USHL or Prep through their section 1 high school performances. I’m willing to bet this is going to be a short list.
C’Mon guys. This is a HS hockey blog. Whenever travel hockey gets discussed, people get really worked up. I think everyone knows that the travel teams the top HS kids play for are better teams than the best HS teams. Lets direct the attention towards the upcoming HS season, even if it does involve less consistent talent. Not a discussion about how much faster and better high level midget and jr hockey is. I bet most players who play both HS and travel enjoy the HS games more, especially if they play on a HS team that has significant student support. The faster travel game is watched mainly by parents (sometimes just one parent b/c the game is often played in another state with the other parent at home tending to the rest of the family) and (hopefully) a college coach or two. When was the last time a travel hockey admission was sold out like at the Ice Hutch and SOR for last year’s CHSHL, DI and DII finals? Both types of play have their plusses and minuses.
Nyack and Tappan Zee?
Was that hockey merger ever completed? In looking at the Section 1 website for the upcoming season I could find games for Nyack but not for TZ.
fanotgame,
You are 100% correct! I have been involved with Travel Hockey and High School hockey for years. My boys have gone to States and Nationals. They have experienced alot because of hockey. BUT it’s the High School games that they constantly talk about. It’s those games that they will always remember because they played against their travel team mates. It’s almost like they had bragging rights over their friends. Very seldom do I hear them talk about their travel days (11 years ) but they always talk about High School.
So all I can say, is sitback and enjoy! Eventually they will go off to college and hopefully continue to play at some level, but enjoy while you have it, because once it’s over you will start going through “Hockey Wilthdrawals”. Have fun with it and make sure your son or daughter enjoys themselves, because bottom line, that’s what’s its about!
Also,
Where it’s important for the kids to have fun, it’s very important for the parents to enjoy themselves, epecially if they’re going to be a senior.
Believe me when I tell you this, once the season begins, then the count down begins. That is, you start counting down the games and eventually they’re done. So if your the parent of a Senior, sitback and really enjoy the season and try to get more involved with your son or daughter, because it will be a season that you will never forget!
HAVE FUN AND ENJOY!
THE PROFESSOR
High school is fun because you play with and against your travel mates?
Uh I think its playing in front of your family, friends, and school mates. Playing and representing your high school and community.
This thing that travel hockey is a bonding thing kills me. Travel hockey players have no allegience or loyalty to their travel teams. Many players jump teams and change sweaters based on so many different factors. Travel hockey is more individual, as the travel player is looking for PERSONAL exposure and improve himself personally to move to the next level.
To the Professor- I have that empty feeling at the end of each HS season when the seniors I am not related to have played their last game on HS ice. Can only imagine the feeling when it involves a member of your family.
Nothing like a HS season. The game is fun for everyone, parents, players, school mates and fans. Even reading about the games in the journal news is part of the experience.
Travel hockey is work. Its fun but players have responsibilities and will answer for failing to meet them. There is some bonding but mostly an individual experience. I think most of the players will say they forged some lifetime friendships thru their travel years.
Wasn’t making an argument travel vs HS. Just trying to make a proper distiction as what to expect out of each in terms of moving to the next levels. Misinformation doesn’t help the players or their families.
fanotgame,
Believe me,it’s not easy. But I was blessed that I got to watch “ALOT” of great hockey. Got to meet alot of great parents and kids. Got to travel up to Boston over to Buffalo, and even visited Virgina, Montral and Toronto (many times). Went to the States and even attended the Nationals.
I had a great time and so did my kids. But the one thing that I miss is jumping in the car and being with them for hours.
SO I as said before, ENJOY IT! Because eventually it will end and when it ends you can’t have any do overs. But hopefully there are alot of GREAT memories!
SPeaking as a league 1 fan, theres a certain magic and excitment when Suffern Pelham or Rye come into Hommocks.
The Rye Pelham games are great atmosphere too. I saw a few years ago a Fox Lane OT victory over Pelham with John (forget his last name) at the Hutch that was awesome too.
The Suffern North game two years ago was electric as well. Some of those rivalrys are incredible.
Sorry John Carter was who I meant
really exciting game
This season will be a good one,you have good teams and your stud players in each league,in league 1 it should be fun to watch Hiller try to lead Suffern past Glaser and Mamaroneck or League 2 you got three top scorers trying to battle it out against eachother with Olivero for Scarsdale,Hagen for ETB and O’Connor for N.Rockland and League 3 you have Marasco for S/NS Prunesti for New Ro and Burdick for Pawling battling in which should be high scoring games and League 4 you have Halpin and Pesce together for SH/I and MIke DeLavergne of JFK.If I missed anybody please tell me
Should be a fun season you got Hiller vs Glaser in league1 and Hagen,O’Connor, and Olivero battling it out in league2 you have Marasco,Prunesti, and Burdick in league3 in what should be high scoring games and the combination of Halpin and Pesce against Mike DeLavergne of JFK in league4 and if i missed anybody else don’t be afraid to say anything bloggers
To high school, Now that Rye has revived their program, the Garnet /Pelican rivalry is building. Now that Mamo has raised their game, the Suffern/Mamo rivalry is super. If those are the DI and DII matchups again in the finals this year, expect more sellouts. North/Suffern, Mamo/Scarsdale, Rye/WP and RTH/Rye matches also draw large crowds. Don’t forget the Iona/Fordham match on the Friday after Thanksgivng at Playland. Sort of a homecoming/reunion feeling with all the recent grads back from college. It would be great if Rye and RTH or RCDS played a game right afterwards. Could be a zoo that nite at the Casino. I would like to see more crossover games between the local CHSHL teams and League 1. Also would be nice to get RCDS more games with League 1 opponents. There are many possible rivalries in the making.
Yes. Back in the 80`s and 90`s Pelham Rye was huge. Then Rye was not contenders for a while and Pelham battled with New Rochelle Mamaroneck and then later Fox Lane. Now Rye has won the title twice and Fox Lane has struggled while Pelham continues to stay in contention every year.
Rye is a power now so this season should be good, I assume Pelham will be what they always are and it should be an exciting season
Pelham-Rye really escalated this year in terms of the rivalry. About 30 of us students went up to Playland for the regular season matchup, where there was almost a brawl. We all remember what happened in the parking lot after the sectional final when again things escalated and there was a little fighting. There was a ton of trash talking on a facebook group after. Kids from Pelham HATE kids from Rye and kids from Rye HATE kids from Pelham, makes for a great rivalry.
Who does Rye have for next season. Don’t really think they have that many horses? Don’t think they will be that competitive next year. At least Pelham has a large core of their players coming back. Who does Rye have?
no common sense..and no job?
pal, i’ve been working. I didn’t check and I don’t check the blog every fourteen minutes.
that being said. you STILL missed the point. whoever made the comment about moving to suffern is the only way to make your kid good at hockey was OBVIOUSLY being sarcastic/kidding. IT WAS A JOKE..ya know.. HA HA…
You were SOOOOOO offended by that joke that you felt the need to promptly reply that two other, non-suffern players were AAA National All-Universe team…
No one doubts the ability of those players you mentioned, but I seriously doubt your common sense.
Take a chill pill and go back to work
to common sense has none
I don’t think the blogger was kidding and if he was kidding yes I should take a chill pill
there should be some fun competition this year in all the leagues this year, team wise and player wise, in league1 you have Hiller probaly gonna lead the league in scoring but will it be enough to surpass Hagen Glaser and Mamaroneck, league2 you got some snipers with Hagen Olivero and O’Connor but whose team will preval and league3 theres good skills with Burdick Marasco and Prunesti in which should be a fun scoring race and team race and league4 theres that Pesce/Halpin duo and theres probaly more in each league if I missed any let me know
To Section 1- Rye has 2 pretty solid goalies (most important position) in Bennecasa and Gibbs. Plus a strong skating shut down D man (the next most important position) in Sganga. At forward, they have 10 or so travel skaters (some AAA and AA players) that will make 3 solid HS lines. Sure, they will miss all state players Rogers and Eck as well as tri sport star Gordon, but they should be there in the end with Pelham. I would say Garnets and Pelicans are pretty even at forward (Pelham has Flory, but Rye has depth), with Garnets having the clear advantage at Goalie (the Rye goalies play Viper and Mariner U18AA) and Pelham the clear advantage at D (lots of jr B talent there). Should be a good matchup. As I have said in earlier posts, if Pelham’s jr B players (Duffy/Dzenis) make the Rye games, Pelham has the advantage. If not, advantage Rye.
sec1fan.. u say no player has ever even ‘flirted’ with the ushl in sec 1, however there are some. i know for one encarnaco tried out for chicago at their final training camp this spring, did not make it, but still, made it out there. marasco last year was invited out to one of the teams camps dont remember exactly which one. cant rememember any more but those r 2 off the top of my head. but i do agree w u obviously there r absolutely no scouts for ne level newhere in a 5 mile radius of a sec 1 game. haha
Rye is going to be good no question. Regarding Pelham, saw them a few times last year, once at Sportorama. I see extrodinary depth at defense. Although thats always been a Pelham trait. They always have great defenseman and the forwards at Pelham all must play good defense.
I do not think they are a two man defense they have other quality defenders to go along with that
high school,
HAve to disagree with you. I think that Rye’s goaltending will be their strength.BUT they lost their “Fire Power”, when they lost Rogers, Eck and Wenzel. Don’t see them scoring that often in League 1. I think it’s going to be a long season.
just to mention,
Morasco and Rui were way over their heads. Both were too small!
Top teams in the area next year in my opinion, will be the following:
League 1
Mamaroneck
Suffern
White Plains
League 2
Clarkstown North
League 3
New Rochelle
Eastchester
League 4
Sleepy Hollow
CHSHL
Iona
To fan of the game and to all the others who think goaltending is the most important position,
I heard a great story to pass along. I ran into a guy that covered the NY Islanders in the 70s. The first season they were horrible. The reason they were able to become as good as they were so fast was that they were ahead of their time. They spent the first season taking measurements and statistics. They measured things like puck possesion, and time in each zone of the ice, wins losses ties. Anyway, After thinking that a goaltender was the most important position like most of us, they learned through their statistics that type of player that most directly relates to wins is a defensemen that can move the puck out of the defensive zone.
If you look at the past Stanley Cup winners, all of them had one of the top 5 puck moving defensemen on their teams, not necessarily the best goaltender. This year Lidstrom, Raflaski, Kronwall…Last year Pronger and Niedermayer. The only exception is when the Hurricanes won, although, they did have possible the games smoothest skating D in Brett Hedican, and Glen Wesley
Um, ETB is in league 2 not 3, but since we are making predictions here are mine.
League 1 – Mamo, sorry Suffern, I know Hiller is top notch, and the incoming players have looked great all summer, and Schells is one of the best, but Mamo is too strong
League 2 – hmmm. Willows is great, but still not sold he is there, has anyone seen him over the summer? If he is I still think they come in second behind ETB, if ETB is running on all cylinders.
League 3 – New Ro, an absolute joke they are not in league 1. I really think this is a stronger league than 2, still just like ETB if they are running on all cylinders, no one should touch them until the get to the playoffs
League 4 – Don’t know if its true, but I heard SH/I and Pearl River really made a push to jump to leagues 2 or 3, but were denied to keep the league #s even. SH/I should cruise through this league, Pearl River makes it interest if the older Hickey returns to join his little brother
League 1 – D1 should be between Suffern and Mamo and should be close games everytime they play eachother. With that Senior class now gone from Suffern, whom have filled in the starting spots for the past couple years(Salt, Natoli, Ruthberg, Conklin, etc.), others will have to step up. Returning veterans like Hiller, Hill, McCarron and Norwin will be very solid and have certainly proven their worth. But Suffern will need to form a 2nd line on both Offense and Defense with players who don’t have much Varsity level experience, as well as sort out their new goaltending situation. Mamo will have great depth as usual. Very strong goalie and D, but the offense might take a dip with the loss of Conner. On the D2 side, Pelham has a great Senior class this year and should be neck and neck with Rye, who has very strong goaltending.
League 2 – Willows and Shuman are back for their Senior year, and with McIndoe still between the pipes, CN will be very very dangerous. Kapnick, also coming off an injury from last year, will probably will be the 3rd player on that first line. They also have two very good young defensemen which should complement that first line of offense nicely. Overall a dangerous starting lineup. They may even beat a Suffern or Mamo on a good day. ETB and North Rockland should be the other top 2 teams.
League 3 – New Roch should be the top team
League 4 – Sleepy Hollow should be the top team
In my opinion heres the league MVPS
L1- Zac Hiller-Hiller I think will lead the league in scoring and lead Suffern to another league title
L2- Matt Willows- havent seen him play but had 103 points as a sophmore can’t wait to see how much he turns CN around
L3-Rich Prunesti- was in a class of his own as a freshmen can’t wait to see what he does with New Ro this year
L4-Brad Pesce- He should dominate a weak L4 and have as much points as anyone and lead his team undefeated in league play
Suffern will be just fine with the players they have. Cant wait till MAMO vs. SUFF!!!
MVPS,
Don’t forget about Hagen from Mamaroneck. He’ll end up with 150 assists because of the scorekeeper! LOL
Does anyone think the MVPS for any of the leagues will be different?
Pelham has more than Flory at forward, Andrew Emerson is better than any of the forwards Rye has, including Taka and Mundinger. I agree, Pelham is much stronger with Dzenis and Duffy, but they still have a good defensive core with Harms, Mamone and Perrazio, along with upcoming freshman Landis.
Style of play is important too. Mamaroneck always has great goaltending and they have depth at all positions. Last years experience for them will go a long way. Its not every day that you displace Suffern as Section Champs. That win could build momentum.
In Division 2 I thought Rye was pretty solid last year and although they are losing a few highly visible stars they will be ok. I thought John Jay was going to be a force but they never could beat Pelham or beat Rye in big games.
Pelhams style of play will keep them competitive. Its no secret to anyone who understands the game that Pelham plays a defensive style of disclipined hockey which keeps them always competitive. Look for that Rye Pelham rivilry to heat up. Two good teams that play intelligent hockey. Please do not count the Mounties out. Schelling is a smart guy and he`ll do whatever it takes to compete. Natolis loss is hard to replace thats the biggest challenge
Pelham will destroy Rye this year. Rye lost all their leaders and scoring threats. Rye’s goalie is good but will not be able to stop the fire power of Pelham. Pelham will win easily. Actually I think Pelham will beat Suffern and Mamaroneck.
Who does Mamaroneck, Suffern and Rye have that can match up to Flory, Emerson, Dzenis, Duffy, and Mamone? It’s going to be a Pelican Year!
Get Real,
That’s funny about the scorekeeper. But that’s not the first time I heard that.
I looked at his assists from last year and seems like he got an assist on every goal scored at Home games and almost never got an assist at Away games. How can that be?
In league 4, i think the mvp will be halpin over pesce, all though that could go either way asuming delaverne doesn’t get back to back mvps.
In league 3, it could be one of 4 new ro players. Prunesti gets attention (deservidly) because he was only a freshman, but martignetti was new ro’s leader in points last season and starpoli was a part time defenceman and feliu is the only proven goalie in league 3. but there are other players that can rack up high point totals like o’conner, dorgan, marasco and oliverio. which ever one of there teams does the best has a very good chance to win it.
Forget Rye,
You sound like my kind of person. Whats your connection to Pelham hockey?
Mamaroneck will beat pelham next year. In the last spring league season Pelham beat mamaroneck by 1 goal in the playoffs with their full team minus duffy. Mamaroneck had Brett Jackson in goal and did not have Hagen, either glasers, Christiansen, Gardninar, and marr. I think with all of their players Mamaroneck will win easy.
you can’t go by spring league, I mean who cares, kids play that for fun and for kids who don’t play travel it gives them a chance to skate. I’ve seen many spring league games and heard about many spring league games [it’s not important]Pelham beat Mamaroneck and probaly didn’t care I heard New Rochelle beat RTH and so did Scarsdale so I guess New Rochelle and Scarsdale should be in L1 and Pelham should be dropped because of their terrible spring league performance. Lets get real hear
Mamaroneck and Pelham? Come on. Pelham will play them tough, they always have for ages, but they cannot match the depth or goaltending of Mamaroneck. They are in two different divisions Mamaroneck is probably twice or more the size of Pelham.
Pelham always plays tough against them though. Look for close games settled by goaltending. Pelham will throw 30+ shots at Mamaroneck, and Pelham should limit Mamaroneck to under 25.
Suffern will probably split with Mamaroneck. Mamaroneck will probably only lose 2 -3 games all season
Which team do you guys think has the better D-fence??? Mamk or Pelham. to me, it looks real close!
Mamoroneck- Hagan, Zweig, Christiansen, Gardner
Pelham- Dzenis, Duffy, Mamone, Harms
I can see this as the final standings in each league
L1-Mamaroneck-Suffern-Pelham-White Plains-Rye-Mahopac-RTH-JJ
L2-N.Rockland-CN-ETB-Scarsdale-Yorktown-Brewster-Mt.Pleasent
L3-New Ro-Pawling-S/NS-Ossining-Byram Hills-Fox Lane-CS
L4-SH/I-L/P-JFK-Pearl River-Greeley-TZ/Nyack-Carmel
Give slight edge to Pelham because there forwards play awesome defense too. The forwards for Pelham play defensive hockey so it takes pressure off the defense and goalie.

D=Ossining G=NewRo L4 O=SH/I D=PearlRiver G=JFK
Nice to see someone actually talk about team play (thanks high school)
A lot of time just names are listed,
quick anyone outside of suffern name one player on next seasons roster besides Hillier, can’t? doesn’t matter Schelling will have them playing great again
Prunesti helped new ro this year but the real reason they almost took out WP was because for the first time I can ever remember they played somewhat of a system (I wasn’t sure what it was, but there was definitely some assignments going on in the nuetral zone)
I love the way Pelham plays but they are almost too structured and predictable, that overload is getting real old, and no matter what, be rest assured the break out pass is going to the same side wing whether they are being covered or not. Watching them is like watching the jets offense under Paul Hackett.
Also with two incredible talents coming back to Sec. 1 Willows and Pesce, will these 2 be able to fit into the system their teams play in, or will they try and do everything themselves?
In the name of Herb Brooks, or at least Kurt Russell, all-star teams fail because they depend only on the talents of their players, the russians win because they take that talent and use it in a system.
to predictions
These are high school players not russian super stars and did you see that playoff game, trust me there was no system it was Rui and McCarick tryin to score for WP an Prunesti scoring for NR what could the system have been get the puck to that certain player
Predictions,
incredible talents
....Willows “YES” Pesce???????? what has he done. Gime me a Break!
Predictions,
good post especially on the New Ro situation. I agree on that. In discussing Pelham, I can only go by what they do against the better competition. They play everyone and are in every game. Watch them closely, I think they are much more sophisticated than the team I see play all the time, Mamaroneck. Watch Pelham teams in a warmup and look at the printed program handouts of the game at a Hommocks home game.
You`ll see two interesting things. Pelham and Rye play a lot of underclassman. and those youngsters play regular shifts. Lets match them up against my Tigers for example. The Tigers have seniors and juniors in all postions on all lines while Pelham and Rye cannot do that.
The second thing you`ll see is this. You`ll watch the warmup and watch for example Pelham warming up vs. Mamaroneck and you`ll say how can this possibly be a game? The overall talent level and depth will spotlight on Mamaroneck. However late in the third period, it will be always be close, it always is. I think if Pelham was so predictable they would have trouble getting out of the zone on the breakouts and I have never seen that group have that issue.
Additonally if they were that predictable they would not outplay so many opponents as they do. I think its a fair comment for me to say that if they were stronger and more experienced in nets the past few years, they would have another Championship.
I think many teams probsbly do not play system hockey. I think the top guns, Suffern, Rye, Pelham do. I`m not so sure of my Tigers, I think it depends on the opponent. This is from my view watching game after game in the Hommocks.
I will say that Suffern is going to be a tough game for Mamaroneck this year. I expect Suffern to try to change the culture of what happened last year. I also am convinced that the tigers need to come out really strong and win that first one.
I am waiting for the schedule so I can make my plans
Pelham does well against teams that can’t counter them, but if you see how they have stuggled whenever they go against a systemized team like suffern and RTH, these guys just through a wing to wing forcheck on them(one forechecker and the other two just kind of wishbone out to the fowards waiting for the breakout pass) and they have all kinds of trouble breaking out of the zone, but you did hit it right on the head, because their fowards are locked on the boards for dear life, they never get caught up ice, hence there fowards are already in position to play defense, and the overload they have played for the past 10, 20 years keeps their players on all sides of the ice. Back in the day when Suffern would kill everyone, they would beat, but never kill Pelham. Pelham rarely gets blown out. You are also right that they are more structured than Mamo. Mamo is an allstar team.
Oh and to Sec 1 fan, I don’t agree with all the people that promote RCD, but at the same time they are not chop liver either, and for Pesce to lead them in goals (by a lot) as a 15 year old is impressive.
Finally to common sense, I hear your point, maybe its wishful thinking on my part, but I would like to believe the HS hockey days of “If my best player is better than your best player, than I win” days are in the past. I think based on the fact that because so many areas have hockey now, your average mid-level player is getting better and better year after year, and you can win if play structured hockey
to predictions
well you are right on “you can win if you play structured hockey
However what I was trying to say was some teams I think systems are to get the puck to the best player because alot of teams leading goal scorers have way more goals then the other players on the team
predictions,
I am a Mamaroneck rooter, but you sound sour on Pelham which is ok by me.
I think you are mistaken with Rye Harrison. I know Pelham beat them twice last year. Both games Pelham was shorthanded. They were sitting two key players I think one was Dzenis and Clay. They won that one. Then later in the year they best them at Playland which is a game I attended because I was there to watch the next game.
I think Pelham loses to Suffern because Suffern has been better. There was a time a few years back when Pelham swept Suffern. My Tigers have just recently had the upper hand the last two seasons. Tigers have swept but in close games. Before that my Tigers would usually draw a split in the games agianst Pelham.
My point being that I would not be too critical of whatever Pelham does strategically since it has been as successful as any other team other than Suffern. The last six or so seasons of which I have watched Mamaroneck I think Pelham has a least two Championships along with a few tough losses in the Championships.
I like the defensive style and I think it works for them.
I just want the Tigers to come out real strong in defense of the Section. They cannot let down. This is a new team and a new season.

Oh know, I am very much a supporter of Pelham, I am just saying they are too predictable sometimes. Oh, and I was wrong it wasn’t RTH, I was referring to when Pawling upset them in the playoffs 2 years ago, as their wing breakout probably fell right into Pawlings pinching D, no D I’ve seen pinches as much as Pawlings.
To be honest I didn’t see much of Pelham this year, I saw they were good, maybe they have opened it up a bit, my comments come mostly from a few years prior.
Predictons,
I was actually at the Pawling Pelham game. I went to all of Mamaronecks playoff games and I will go to Playland or Ice Hutch when Mamaroneck has the off day between games. That loss by Pelham was strictly goalkeeping. I think Pelham outshot Pawling by more than 45 shots. I remember the shots being somewhere in the 55-12 range in Pelhams favor. Pelham was in Pawlings offensive zone the entire game. The Pelham tender gave up two or three weak shots. In fact I think the first four pucks pushed or directed at Pelhams cage were goals. Pelham came back but then Pawling scored a huge breakaway goal as Pelham was pressing and Pelham never recovered. I cannot really say your opinion of Pelham predictabiltiy was the reason they lost. I will say that Pawlings goaltender did stop close to 50 shots.
Predictions,
what did you thinkof last years Tigers? I thought they got robbed in that regional loss
really the shots were that bad, I stand corrected then. pelham always gets a lot of shots because if teams try and cover the off wingers, the puck carrier will just shoot it from a sharp angle. One of the nicest goals I have ever seen was in the playoffs a couple of years ago, Micheal Emmett who is now a good player for Towson state scored a goal upper corner on a rocket from practically the goal line. If you want to see an overload done right, then watch Pelham.
To be honest I didn’t see mamo that much. I saw one game against a full strentgh Mahopac team. I still say if Maho was healthy, and had Perrelle all year, no way they don’t finish with 10 wins last year. Watch Mahopac this year, they will prove last year was a fluke.
The game in which I saw, Hagan looked very impressive, Mamo seemed to control the boards pretty well, and they were big and fast, looked like an all-star team
i have watched many of Mamo’s games, its true the mamo team does look like an all star team, on offence their 3 and 4 lines had some good players and do get somesort of ice time and on their 1 and 2 line’s all players were great skaters and well rounded. Mamo does a good job of getting their 3rd line out their and the 4th do occasionally see some ice. their defence does control the boards very well with physical play and smart positioning. Mamo’s D also have some very fast skaters but i forgot which players they were. Mamo’s team are very solid on D but some guys will need to step up on Offence (conner gone) if they want to make it even deeper into states after they win sectionals.
hagen is not playing junior bobcats. he is playing gulls 16U bantam
hagen is actually playing on both teams the bobcats promised him if he had stayed with the gulls midget team they will let him play some games for the bobcats
this is what I can see each leagues standings looking like

Thats what I like about the Tigers. They have enough players and talent to play 3 or even 4 lines without using 8th and 9th graders. The depth is a major plus. I expect them to come out strong and defend the Championship.
I am wondering how White Plains will do in league 1. I suspect they are a smaller version of Mamaroneck, a large population of hockey players with depth. Do they still have a Junior varsity?

this year is all about suffern. no one understands that hiller controls the game and is basically unstoppable
I’m not very sure but i think Mamo is one of the only programs in the section with a JV team. they also had a great modified team. Jeez Mamo is looking good for the future, however after this season they loose like half the team, but i’m sure they will have some more great players come up.
I definitely agree with what you say and with some help from Hill and Baker who knows how far that team can go. I’ve spoke with a few of the guys on Suffern’s squad said to be their top players and they like that all the hype’s about mamk and can not wait to show everyone how overrated the entire mamk team is.
Ok I agree Mamaroneck is overrated, however Hiller is very good ,but he does not control a game and if he is so unstoppable how come he couldn’t get past Mamaroneck last year with all those players Suffern had last year

suffern did get past mamaroneck 2 out of 3 times last year and beat them pretty easily in those 2 games. Just a fluke that they lost the one that counted. I also think that mamaroneck is very overrated, yes they have a lot of returning players but most aren’t very good, and on the flip side suffern is very underrated. Can’t wait for that rematch. Going to be a lot different outcome then last year. With Hiller, Hill, Jaegar Norwin, McCarron and a bunch of younger kids that nobody has really heard of they will be much better then people think. The one spot that is going to be trouble is in goal. Rice played amazing in the CDL league this year and Schelling will have a hard time on who is going to be the starting goalie.
well common sense, i highly doubt Hiller has not gotten any better like your making it seem and this year he will control the game. He is just so calm with the puck that he will be able to settle and make plays to Hill. That is controlling the game
to Suffern alumni-
“beat Mamaroneck easily in thoes two games”???? what are you talking about the first game was 5-3 and the second game was a nailbitter 2-1 comon…and the third game was a fluke? now u got to be kidding me! the whole yeaar it was suffern, then mamk just a tiny bit below them and then it was everyone else. you had to of known that Mamk was going to get them in the third game because it’s very hard to beat a team three times in a row thats just about on your same level. comon give mamo some credit. i know deep down inside you were just hurt that mamo got them on the last game
on the other thing u said, i think its true Mamo is getting a little to much hype, they are good but not overpowering, they will not have a perfect season but will have one close to it. i think the suffern and Mamo games will be close but mamo will eventually make their way to the top they have a great defence and an outstanding goalie, plus they have a good enough offence that will give them a sufficient number of goals to win games.
to suufern alumni
You can’t say Suffern beat Mamaroneck easiley those two times when the scores were 5-3 and 2-1 also I don’t think Glaser played in the 5-3 loss,I say the two teams split the season series with Suffern winning the first and getting there revenge and then once they have gotten there revenge I think Mamaroneck will beat them in the second game, also I think one of the teams won’t make it back to the section championship
Assuming that there will be 12 teams in D1 and 11 teams in D2 like last year heres what the playoff seedings will look like in my opinion Division1:1.Suffern 2.Mamaroneck 3.WP 4.Mahopac 5.RTH 6.NRockland 7.CN 8.ETB 9.Scarsdale 10.NewRo 11.SH/I 12.LP Division2:1.Pelham 2.Rye 3.JJ 4.Yorktown 5.Brewster 6.Pawling 7.Ossining 8.S/NS 9.PearlRiver 10.JFK 11.Greeley.Now some teams might have bad seasons and miss the playoffs and others will have great seasons and make the playoffs so what do you bloggers think the playoffs will look like?
Glaser played in the 5-3 loss to Suffern, and then gave up 5 goals to Mahopac the next nite.
also to suffern alumni-
you say suffern has alot of underated players that will beat Mamk, but being a long time Mamk fan, i think Mamk has a few underated players too, and one player who i think is the most underated in the entire section, but will not mention names.
who are they???
Most of the underated players are in league 3 and 4.
McManus on Pearl River is a 6’2 D-man that anyone would love,
The goaltenders in league 4 deLaverne, Glaviano, and Lacey
Halpin, Marasco, Prunesti all were able to score just as easily in the higher league games as they did in there own league last year. These guys should be able to be mentioned in the same breath as anyone in the league this year
I agree delaverne and glaviano are great goalies that get overlooked cause they play in L4. Lacey at his best like he was in the playoffs last year is about as good as any other goalie in the section this year, but he also has days were nothing goes right. but i know he was recovering from some sort of head injury all season, so i’ll cut him some slack, he was there when it mattered. The Pearl River goalie was also pretty good and greely had a freshman that was also pretty impressive. My personal opinion was L4 had much better goaltending then L3 and probably better then L2. Even with Fyfe graduating and Feliu moving up to L3, L4 will still have great goaltending.
League 4 respect. Everyone of the New Rochelle starters last year would have been decent to significant contributor on most league 1 teams last year.
Pearl River has lots of solid if not spectacular skaters and most are returning this year. Kennedy/Putnam Valley plays very good team defense in front of their very good goalie (the Suffern concept).
Heres what I think the league standings will look like
L1-Suffern-Mamaroneck-Pelham-WP-Rye-Mahopac-RTH-JJ

L3-NewRo-Pawling-Ossining-S/NS-ByramHills-CS-FoxLane
L4-SH/I-LP-PearlRiver-JFK-Greeley-TZ/N-Carmel
There are good players in all 4 leagues. The depth and experience is the only separation. The gap is starting to close. Years ago first round playoff games between league 4 and league 1 teams were blowouts. You do not see that any more.
I am not a fan of New Rochelle at all, but I hope they win the section this year to prove how ridiculus the league placements are, they may have a long shot, but still a shot if they play the way they did at the end of last season.
Also can we keep this blog clean, the opinions are fine, but we can do with out the fellatio comments involving the Mamo, and RCD goalies, thats just ignorance
League 4,
Halpin, Marasco and Prunesti might Average a point or 2 in League 1 games and that’s all. Different level all together.
Look at White Plains last year, they had two of the top scorers in the area. WHen they played the top teams around the county last year they barely averaged 1 point a game. Different level ….Different results.
Also, Halpin is Defensemen. A good defensemen but not really a scorer. In League 4 yes ….In League 1 “NO”!
Um..Halpin scored 30 goals, had a hat trick vs. WP, had no problem gaining a goal and an assist vs. C. North, lit it up vs. Mt. pleasant, and didn’t come off the ice vs. mahopac, registering and assist. He would be a great player in league 1. He was the leader of the Vipers tier 2 team that made it pretty far, and he really should only be a sophmore he has one of those weird Dece3mber birthdays, oh and Pesce proved he is a top scorer anywhere netting 15 for RCD, comparable to league 1
league 3 and 4,
Give me a break…He hasd 30 goals against “WEAK” competition. ANd No he did not have a Hat trick against White Plains. He had two goals and White Plains was a weak team. They lost to Fordham prep who came in 4th in the CHSHL.
Can’t compare players from League 3 and 4 against League 1. It’s not fair.
Section 1 Fan was right. Even the top teo scorers (Rui and Sigona) couldn’t really score against League 1 teams. They did OK but they weren’t getting 5-6 points a game. They were lucky to average 1-2 points against League 1 Competition.
And Pesce…..What has he ever done! Must be his father blogging!
Well one thing Pesce has done was score 2 in one game vs. mamo this year, any other sophmores do that?
also amazing how Marasco had 4 goals and 2 assists in 3 games against league 1 teams, yet couldn’t manage a goal in any games vs. JFK this year, yet we still think points in league 4 mean nothing
Rui and Phil did fine against League 1 both averaging about 2 points a game, and they went against the best of league 1, Mamo, Suff, Rye. The only weak team they played was North, and they still had to get through McIndoe. They didn’t have the benefit of racking up 19 points in 4 games vs. mahopac and John Jay like Connor, and this is by no means knocking connor who was the best scorer in the league this past season
Hey White Plains,
Rui and Sigona had alot of points because they played in League 2. And then beat up on League 3 & 4 teams.
Section 1 -White Plains beat up on their own league 2 teams worse than they ever beat up on us, infact if anything we did better against league 2 teams with the exception of white plains.
Oh and I like using Pesce as an example because he came from league 4 and proved he could be just as effective in the RCD league. What has he ever done? Well, how about something no other sophmore did all last year, that is score 2 goals in one game vs. Mamo
I liked to know where Halpin thinks he led the Vipers in ponts last year he was a defensemen. There was alot of talent on the Viper team last year he was not the only one and by all means no standout, he did not even get noticed at the prepschool showcase. If i recall the two smallest kids on the ice were noticed. And for Pesce he is a good player when there isn’t any hard hitting once the hitting gets hard he shys away.
Look folks the bottom line is there are a certain number of players in L3 and L4 that can do well in L1. Section 1 fan says Prunesti,Marasco and Halpin would average maybe 2 points a game in L1, well Halpin had 2 points against WP and Prunesti as a freshmen had 5 points in a playoff game vs WP and lets face it WP should have been in L1 last year and Marasco did well against L1 teams [Mahopac,Pelham]also didn’t a L4 team beat a L1 team in the playoffs last year CN vs SH/I
If you look at any of the stats from sect 1 no defensemen scored 30 goals, there is no way Halpin would be scoring 30 points as a defensemen in League 1. Yes he would be able to keep up with League 1 but he would not score all those points lucky if he would get 10 in league 1 as a defensemen.
Of course Halpin wouldn’t score the 31 goals he had this year in league 1, the best offensive defensemen I have ever seen in league 1 is Joe Hlushko from North. Hlushko went on to be one of Castelton’s best d-men ever and a D. 3 first team all-star, and remember Castelton is a place where Chris Wynne (who I thought was the best D-man in the league his senior year only dressed for a game or 2 this past season) and Joe only had 25 goals his senior year, and Halpin wasn’t the point leader of the vipers, but he and Olivero were the spiritual leaders of that team. If Halpin was in league 1, he would probably hit the 10 goal mark and put up as many assists as his teammates would allow.
I think of the returning D-men, Hagan is the best after him I think the next crop is Halpin, NR’s Meany, and Sufferns McCarron, and Rogers (I am not sure if he graduated or not though)
The kid on Pelham Dennis or Victor Zenis is better than that kid you are talking about. If the kid is a defenseman his job is to play defense. Very few players can handle all the great forwards in league 1 like Dennis or zennis. The other Pelham D Mamone is really tough to beat too
Hagen is a D man but he is more skilled on offense.
after hagen the best defenseman will be sufferns junior Norwin
I agree that there are a few kids playing League 3 and 4 that might be able to do OK in League one.
But there’s NO WAY that you can compare their stats to Players that that Play League 1. The League 1 teams, most of the times, play tougher competition throughout the season. When a player constantly averages 5-6 points a game then that’s just rediculous. That means that the competition STINKS and you’re better off practicing.
Look at those two players from White Plains last year who had all those points… EVERYONE knows tht when they played League 1 teams they got one point a game if they were lucky.
Now these good players might be successful against a good team but I doubt that they would be that successful if they played at a higher level all season.
I wonder if the score keeper from Mamaroneck is coming back next year? That defensemen who can’t skate should end up with 100 assists. LOL!
Norwin is the best d man. May not put up big number’s but i have yet to see someone go around him.
These are what the leagues will look like
L1-Suffern-Mamaroneck-Pelham-WP-Rye-Mahopac-RTH-JJ
L2-NRockland-CN-ETB-Scarsdale-Yorktown-MP-Brewster
L3-NewRo-Pawling-Ossining-S/NS-ByramHills-CS-FoxLane
L4-SH/I-LP-PearlRiver-JFK-Greeley-TZ/N-Carmel
We will see this year which kids are the studs and which kids are the ankle benders
2 top players average 2 points a piece against league 1 teams? The team scored 1 meaningless goal vs. Suffern-think they had 1 point between them
what will be the lines next year for mamk, rye, white plains, suffern???
The Mamo Starters are pretty clear and they will be…
On offence- Fine, Jackson, C.Glaser,
On defence- Hagan, Zweig
In net- L.Glaser
Second liners-
On offence I’m not very sure but possible guys are-
Marr, Conner, Naclerio
On defence- Christiansen, Gardiner
Back up goalie- Buly
does not really matter with the Tigers, they have a ton of strong players and many of those players are thesame. They will have 3 to 4 solid lines
what about sufferns lines
No one is saying league 3 and 4 players would romp league 1, we are just saying that the good players here would still be good players in league 1.
You can through stats out the window on all accounts. Scoring on the worst teams in league 1 was much easier than trying to score(with the exception of the brilliance of Mcindoe some nights) on the best in league 4. And League 2 was all together ridiculus. Greely and Sleepy who were two of the average teams in league 4 scored a combined 16 goals on Mt. Pleasant in 2 games. And I didn’t see Brewster all year but judging from the stats they didn’t seem to be rock of gibralta either.
Hiller Hill Baker
Modica jeager murhpy
gatta gorton nicholson
Norwin MCCarron
I see lots of seniors and sophmores from “suffern line’s”.
Whats up with the junior class? Except for Norwin will their be any contributing juniors
how will suffern only play 2 d. it looks like mamk has an advantage over them with 4 solid d men
suffern defense will be just fine
2 dmen will not be able to hold up 45 minutes
A lot of talk about a few defencemen. I played with these guys and heres what i think. Halpin is the most talented dman i’ve ever played and has hands as good as anybody in sec 1. Dzenis made a better applecore team cause he is more physical and was already in the organization. So Halpin is more talented, Dzenis is tougher, but i think the best defensive defenceman is Kaufman from stepinac. Nobody beats him 1 on 1 and he always clears rebounds. I think Halpin is best for high school and would be a household name if he played for the right team, considering his shot is as hard and he is a better skater then a nother former teammate of mine that gets alot of attention. But that guy has already got ripped on this blog, even he is very modest and hockey isnt even his top sport, so i’m not trying to make him look or sound bad cause he wouldn’t ask his scorekeeper to screw with his #s.
As a Tiger fan I think the Tigers kids are the best. However I watch mostly league 1 teams and Pelham has 3 real good defensive D men. I think they held my Tigers down to a minimal amount of good chances. Pelham has not had great keepers yet they are always a tough team giving up few goals and less chances than most. Therefore the praise goes to the D men. I would recognize that and not overlook the impact of those D men at Pelham. Theres a reason why that team limits good chances
I have played in league 1 the past couple of years. Its a tough division. Last year two teams were down North and Pac but the rest of that league was solid. Mamaroneck has many players all as good as one another. Suffern always has real skilled players and of course they had Natoli all those years and good D. I read talk about Pelham and defensive players. Pelham is a tough team to score on. The guys they have on D year in and out make it hard to get quality chances. The guys they have playing D are always under rated I think because those guys play defense first. So the offensive numbers are not there sometimes. You would not be able to hold teams to so few good chances in that league if you did not have real strong D men and Pelham always has them
Oh, Halpin is on the right team, especially with Pesce back now, their team is just in the wrong league. They had 3 injuries to 3 of their best players last year one cost the whole season and I think the other two only played half the games, and no Pesce. If they are healthy this year watch out.
And, Pelham is tough to score on, still Jo Jo managed a goal and an assist in the playoffs, score another for league 4!!
So if a guy scores a goal in a playoff, which was a 6-3 loss, its a big deal? They were in the game for about 20 minutes
The game was tied going in to the third I think they were in it for more then 20 minutes
Look I am not saying L4 is the best league but its not far from some other leagues just look at the L4 teams that made the playoffs last year [NewRo,JFK,SNS,PearlRiver,Greeley,SHI] now NewRo gave the heavly favored WP team a hell of a game and almost beat them JFK lost to SNS and SNS was tied in the third with Pelham, PearlRiver lost to Ossining only by a goal, SHI beat L1 CN and almost beat L1 Mahopac and I forgot what Greeley did I think they lost to Pawling or JJ. My point is L4 didn’t get embaressed by anybody in the playoffs and it just shows how tight the section is and how L4 isn’t much different from other leagues
Along with McCarron’s shot from the point Suffern’s D will have the offense needed for the powerplay. Wow is Suffern underrated this year
The Pelham Salem game was close on the scoreboard for a while, the shots and the play was all Pelham all game long. Salem got a weak goal on the pelham goalie. The rink looked tilted in Pelhams favor
League 3 and 4, who are you? ”... Halpin wasn’t the point leader of the vipers, but he and Olivero were the spiritual leaders of that team.” Oliverio wouldn’t write that about himself so who are you, a scarsdale fan or what? Its true Halpin wasn’t our leading point scorer, even though nobody kept tract, but he was probably the best player on that team, but the whole spiritual leader thing makes no sense, unless you want to make a case for the captain Aidan McHugh (leaving Ossining for prep school but is still going to play enough games to qualify for states for vipers this season). I’m not trying to rip any of my teamates, and i agree with everything else you have said, but dont listen to whoever told you that stuff, cause they were not on the team. Unless you were thinking of Robby Oliverio, the older one who was on the major team, not Matt.
And to ….., The 2 guys at the showcase that “got noticed” were mastrocola and McGee because they were 92s (other 92s like Pesce and Oliverio were not noticed) and they were offered a tour of the school at Hotchkiss, a prep school neither of them could play at. And Halpin never brags about himself so easy on assuming he wrote that about himself. And he was a standout, you saw his bright lime green gloves. How could you not notice him.
I, like you, thought Halpin was the best player on that team and Oliverio was the hardest worker, thats why I called them leaders. Yes I am a Scarsdale fan, love the way they play would have liked to see them in league 1 or 3 or 4, I thought league 2 was a bit weird this year and with WP being what they were and everyone else very inconsistant. It should be better this year with N. Rockland, hopefully a good North team and ETB (I know this isn’t going to be popular, but the 2 best players in the section will probably be ETBs Hagan, and Prunesti(Here come the Hiller arguments))
The reason I bring up halpin, Prunesti, and Jo Jo so much is along with Glaviano, Felieu, and De Laverne, they kind of get a raw deal playing in 3 and 4. Believe me, these 6 could step onto any league 1 team and make an impact
Its funny how everyone thinks L1 has the best players but you know what how many kids in L1 can say they have gotten to a Tier 1 or Tier 2 Nationals which is in many peoples opinions the biggest tournament at ages 12-18 L4-has Feliu,Halpin,Glavano on that past Viper team also Prunesti for the Avalanche and L3 theres Mchugh,Dorgan from that Viper team and in L2 theres Olivero from that Viper team and Hagen went there with the Avalanche so travel wise it looks like L2,3,4 have the advantage
Not League 1..is it possible the league 1 guys dont go to “nationals” because:
a) nationals arent that important
b) its in the season and those players play for programs that wont allow them to leave
c) they have an obligation to their HS team and not their travel team
real simple, you maybe a great player in league 2,3,4 but you cant compare the stats from league to league. Show me a player that has moved up in leagues and then I will agree.
Nationals are not important? Are you kidding me you obviosly have never been to one and they have an obligation to there HS team in case you haven’t figured this out travel hockey is better and I mean real travel hockey not HV league hockey for teams like the mariners where the fartest they travel is Brewster
there is definitely a few players in league 1 that have also been to nationals.
I think it’s time everyone stops hyping Pelhams suppose to be “superb” defense. When suffern blows them out 5-0 opening night there dream team will be like every other season, overrated. You are overrating every single player on their team with the exception of Flory. Flory is the only player worth giving recognition too and he can not come close to beating either Suffern or Mamk by himself. Keep dreaming for that amazing season but it will never happen.
“To Whatever”, I am guessing that your son/student/athlete play travel hockey, is in a lower league and is not the star of his program. I have actually been to Nationals three times with two kids. The easiest thing to do on this blog is to start a debate over travel hockey over high school hockey, to let parents with no sense of perspective get on their digital soapbox to justify why there kids are better than another. Just let them play hockey, let them work hard and enjoy the sport. If they learned to compete rather than to find excuses… or would you like to ban the 9 year old little league baseball player who was banned for being to good. Its simple, the great players rise above the standings and the leagues or they force their teams to move up. Its that simple.
O yes, and they have an obligation to their HS team. Yes, more so than Nationals…sorry. Maybe start by teaching to honor a commitment and not bail on your teammates mid-season.
pelham is going to put a good season together losing 2 seniors and 1 junior that were a big part of the team but are getting a new senior goalie i heard from new englend prep
Going to Nationals..
It is quite an accomplishment to go to Nationals. However, the Nationals top talent level is considered to peak at the U14 age level.
Simply what happens is that at ages 15 and 16 a lot of the top talent gets siphoned off to Prep schools, sometimes to junior prgrams (i.e., Kevin Clare with the NJ Hitmen) A lot of good talent remains but alot has also left.
The Tier 1 talent drainaccelerates even more at ages 17 and 18 to prep and junior programs. In addition, many of the second level talent have decided to play more local “Travel” to accomodate the social life of high school and high school hockey. Thusly while a U16 and a U18 national championship is something to be proud of, the U14 is generally considered the toughest to achieve.
Also, before anyone knocks the “lower level HV travel” just remember there is a tier 1 player/parent out-there with the same condescinding attitude towards tier 2 teams like the Vipers, and a Junior/Prep player parent with the same condescending attitude toward tier I.
Try not to make yourself feel better by maligning other levels of play.
Peace.
The post from “this calls for a celebration”
I hope you are not a Suffern fan. Suffern is better than Pelham the last few years, but Suffern respects Pelham. I would hardly call Pelham over rated as they are a division 2 team and clearly the most successful division 2 team in this section over the last 100 or so seasons.
Lastly, I did not read one instance where people were “hyping” Pelham. I see Mamaroneck getting hyped, and they are the defending champs, I see Suffern getting hyped, and thats because they are Suffern but I have not seen anything where Pelham is boasting. So I disagree
Hey d-men,
Are you on kool-aid. Kaufman as the best defensemen around. Even on Stepinac’s team he isn’t the best. I would take little regan and yankowski before kaufman. Wasn’t he on the ice when Iona scored the tying goal with 2 minutes to go. He let the Iona player go right down the middle for the equalizer. PLease…............. stop telling jokes!!
First off Harold can you please start a new topic,Thanks
Just an update for all you fans who like D men, Chris Wynne from Suffern has transfered to Wagner College to continue playing Hockey
Pelham is getting a new goalie from Canterbury, Gavin Lambdin. He was the JV starter and is pretty good, especially when you compare him to Durand and Vesselis.
Just in August, I count at least 20 new blog topics started on the Lacrosse Blog.
Okay, so perhaps lacrosse is a little more topical because a lacrosse scholarship is more easily acheivable than a hockey scholarship, you could expect a couple of more blogs. But 20 lax blogs to zero hockey blogs.
Come on Harold or JN sports editors, step-up.
The same thing with the football blog. If the topic is not Rye or Harrison footbal related, the blog gets very little attention.
All these guys you are metioning in league 3 and 4 might be good in those leagues but if you really watch these leagues many of the skaters can’t and don’t skate that well,so racking up points in these leagues doesn’t say much and to say they would score a point or 2 in league one is ludicris,no matter what you say,its that simple
Hey, always welcome college hockey talk for a new topic.
Wynne to Wagner??
He should be a big help, I saw them play Montclair last year in a battle of two ACHA D. 2 middle of the road teams. Amazing Montclair isn’t better, they have a rink right in the middle of campus, and a pretty decent fan base. Anyway, Wagner’s starting 5 looked great, better than anyone Montclair had. After that though the rest of their team was very, very weak, while Montclair looked like they had 20 guys all of the same skill. Wagner relying on these 5 players won the game 6-5. After those 5, Wynne is clearly better than anyone else Wagner had.
Also Paul Doran and Micheal Emmett have been invited to try out for ACHA’s USA team that is playing in the World University games in China during winter break. Doran should make it being that the Rhode Island coach has been chosen to run team USA this year.
Wagner College hockey received a great recruiting class a couple of years ago from the “major” junior team that played out of Sport-o-rama. I believe they were called the Metro-Moose. They relocated to a Staten Island rink after one year at SOR, leaving behind a refurbished hockey lockerrom which is now used exclusively by the Suffern hockey program.
Perhaps Wagner’s “great” starting 5 were those Metro-Moose kids.
http://www.wagnerhockey.com/news
Here is the site that shows Wagners incoming players. It seems like they are stacking up for next season.
Wagner has brought in some of the top scorers from the JR A Hitmen and Dane Gluting(leading scorer) formerly of the Metro Moose came back to Wagner after a yr at Davenport in Michigan and has added Wynne on D, They should be a team to cause some problems.
I know I’ve said it before, but just another example how unless you’re drafted in the first round of the NHL and are going to BU or Michigan, its tough to make it right out of high school. Dane Gluting is going to be 26 years old this weekend. The youngest player on his Davenport team last year was 20 years old. This is no knock on Dane, enjoy it while you can. I just wish our players wouldn’t rush right into college and then find themselves on the the 4th line getting a minute or two a game.
I said kaufman was the best defensive defenceman. I also said i was friends with him so obviously i’m a little biased. But i can tell you he was our goalies favorite because he was alert and cleared all sorts of rebounds and never gets beat 1 on 1. As for comparing him to Yankowski, wasn’t he the one that completely whiffed on the pass that lead to Cody Kings game-winning goal in game 3. I’ve played with him too and he has little to no hockey smarts at all. Kenny, unlike steve and regean, is level headed and doesn’t have some sort of anger problem. And how is it kool-aid if nobody has ever hyped him up before?
ACHA
I would probably agree with you about leaving HS and trying to play at some college, but playing a yr or 2 of JRS doesn’t always help either, which proves how tough it is even for much better players.
I personally know at least 8-10 kids that went to play JRS and or Prep and still are not playing where they thought they would be playing, which isn’t a rap on anyone but just the hard facts.
I agree, but it still gives you a better shot, look at the Daniels, they were drafted and they are still going to play juniors before trying D. 1
No argument, but they are the exception.
Didn’t you metion J.Hutchko and his outstanding Offensive ability, I totally agree and thought the same, but he didn’t even get a sniff of the big time, which is still amazing to me,I think his size might have hurt him.
ACHA
I also thought Wynne was pretty good but I really think his HS coach held him back Offensively, because Defensively he was a standout.
Hutch was an incredible player, in my opinion he made some wrong decisions (like many of us) in his playing choices out of HS. I talked to some scouts and former D. 1 players when he was at North, and playing for the Ramapo Rangers. They all said, if taken the right route he could play D. 1. I don’t think size was as much of a concern, but of course if he was 6’5 we would be watching him on TV right now.
Some colleges also don’t develop their players, I’m not saying Castleton doesn’t (I really don’t know a whole lot about them). But, there is a reason NHL clubs love when their players go to places like Wisconsin and BU, or you always see defensmen going to Bowling Green, these are great Developmental teams. While teams like Minnesota role 4 lines and are more of win one for the gipper type teams. Even D – 3 teams have some good developmental programs. Bemijid State, Hamilton, and Elmira may not have NHL players but you can find them in the AHL. Penn State and Rhode Island also usually send a player or 2 to an NHL camp per year.
sufferns lines
hill hiller murphy
jaeger modica mitchell
sanchez gatta goetz
norwin mccarron
fuchs byrnes
to correct your line assumptions
1)hill,hiller,baker
2)jaeger,modica,gorton
3)mitchell,gatta,_ i have no clue
mccarron, norwin
fuchs, byrnes
who is sanchez?
never seen murphy play
sanchez is a 9th grader who plays AAA avalanche and has good talent. murphy is a solid player but was on 5th line last year as a junior. also goetz will be on either the first or 2nd line replacing either baker or gorton. then the 3rd guy on the 3rd line will be who ever gets replaced. the defense sounds good except suffern will only run 3 defenseman, ocassionaly 4.
who are those 3 defenseman
d-men,
AND WASN”T IT KAUFMAN WHO LET KING GO DOWN THE MIDDLE FOR THE TYING GOAL! LOL
the 3 defensman are norwin mccarron and fuchs in that order
to d-men
little reagan will be the best defensemen on stepinac this year. The team doesnt have much hope because they lost reagan there goalie and all of the scoring natoli and reagan are doing playing together on the same team.
sorry i meant to say does anyone know how natoli and reagan are feeling playing together. and that stepinacs goal scorers since all the seniors left
Kenny is not the type of kid that makes enemies, so i think “funny” and “stepinac” are either yankowski or Reagan (or a very close friend or family member). I was simply comparing him with my other teamates halpin and dzenis (and i said i thought halpin was the best of the 3, and i didn’t say anything about best around, just guys i played with). Whatever i said seemed to make you very angry so it was clearly personal to you. I just mentioned his name and suddenly i’m his biggest promoter. I dont play in chshl so i never saw any high school games. I threw his name out cause he is solid and does his job, but those guys usually get no credit. If anybody else wants to promote an underrated solid dman that may not be a goal scorer (1 that doesnt play on suffern, mamo, pelham, or rye) go ahead. They deserve more credit then they are given.
d-men,
You’re definitely not a player. WHO ARE YOU TRYING TO KID!
LOL What a joke….
Isn’t davenport a club d 2 team?...no way the youngest kid was 20 if it is a club d2
Davenport isn’t your normal D2 team. It’s very clear that Davenport is a roster full of players that could not make a D1 team. They actually have a player that’s a Juior this year and has a 1981 birth year (27 years old). They also have 3 players that have 1985 birth years and two seniors and 1 sophomore with 1986 birth years. Last year they gaduated 5 players that had played club hockey for 5 years and all these players had birth years of 1984 and 1985. Doesn’t sound right but that’s what you’re dealing with at the club hockey level these days.
http://dupanthers.cstv.com/auto_pdf/p_hotos/s_chools/dave/sports/m-hockey/auto_pdf/0708-media-guide
Don’t know if this will work, because it is a media doc, but this will show the birtdates of the roster of Davenport. They are not your typically D. 2 club team. They play over 40 games a year and travel all over the country. Some of their players played on the D. 2 USA team that did very well in….I think it was Korea?? last season. They are good enough to play with any D. 1 club team
Yep the URL works, I looked it over again, Davenport actually has one 19 year old freshman, the rest are 20 or older
Davenport even has a player with a 1981 birth year! That makes him 27…...Ouch!
Hey D-Men,
Check out this goal, Have to give the Iona player credit on this play which caused the WINNING goal. Yankowski did nothing wrong. The Iona player made a great play. Would never of been in this situation if they didn’t let king go down the middle with a minute to go to tie up the game. Where was the defense?
http://www.lohud.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080221/VIDEO03/80221009/1110
yeah, remember that the next time you see a 150 pound senior thinking he is ready to play college hockey.
27 is a reach. I know in D. 1 Club there is an unwritten age limit. I am not sure if it is in the league rules, but they kind of blackball anyone 26 or older, unless there are extrodinary circumstances. They fear if they let them play, it will become a glorified mens league. Which…unfortunately is what some (not all) D.2 and d. 3 club teams are.
The top D. 1 club teams. the top NCAA d. 3 teams, and the top D. 1 NCAA teams are made up mostly of 19-25 year olds.
There are some sketchy reports coming in but I have heard through the grapevine that Biff was shot with a BB gun on the 11th green today at Spook Rock Golf Course while playing with two fellow bloggers and his son. Desptite being wounded by the shot, Biff proceeded to apprehend the shooter and disarm him immediately. In other news, Ramapo’s Finest defeated Biff by 1 stroke to take the title and Big Dog’s 20.
I knew that was you Steve.
P.S. Cambria was on my team to and he called it a whiff. He just skated after you and it slipped off your stick. It happens. I wouldn’t rub your face in it if you weren’t trying to blame somebody else. He should have assumed you’de give it away and stayed back. While were at it, lets blame Reagan for not stopping the breakaway. Why dont we blame the center that lost the face-off that led to one of Ionas earlier goals. Stop trying to blame other people just cause you became the scape goat. Man up and move on.
what do you all think about rye town’s loss of seniors and how they will manage to recover this year? they lost both mckinneys kegan and novick and have a large void to fill. i can’t see them doing too well
Does anyone know what the schedule requirements are this year for mandatory games? For League 1, all of the teams have posted their games against League 1 opponents – 14 games. White Plains, Blind Brook and John Jay have schedule those games and an additional 4 games against League 2 teams. Does anyone know what the requirement is for each league?
With the addition of a solid goaltender and participation from Duffy and Dzenis, Pelham should be right there with Mamo and Suffern. Rye and WP (two evenly matched teams) form the middle band of League 1; with Jay, Pac and RTH filling out the league. With a few strong lower league teams (North- if all those guys come back, North Roc and New Ro come to mind immediately) it should be a very good, competitive season. Lots of even, hard fought games ahead. Travel hockey has already started. HS hockey a little more than 8 weeks away. Can’t wait.
d-men,
Who’s Steve? Seems like someone hit a nerve…...
I was there when Biff says he got shot. Im not sure if it really happened. All I know is he took off through the woods chasing a 13 year old boy. I think that is a little strange. You guys think what you want.
i heard that the shooter was a mamaroneck player
I understand you are a pelham fan but to say they are comparable to Mamk or Suffern is unfair. Those two d you named to not make them any closer to either of the two powerhouses. The goalie returning from prep school might be a little better, but have not heard great things. Have been told more along the lines that Mamk and Suffs O are going to eat him alive
To the last poster:
I read this blog and I doubt Fanotgame is a Pelham fan. I think he was just looking at another team objectively. I am a diehard Mamaroneck fan in all sports. I do realize that all that separated Pelham from Section Championships the last few years was goalkeeping. Thats a fact. Beating Mamaroneck and Suffern? Well, agree but Pelham is a Divvy 2 school so they only play them in regular season. Pelham had close losses over the last few years to both Suffern and Mamaroneck. Last year Pelham was leading Suffern until Suffern scored a few soft ones. I did not see the Suffern game at Suffern but I think it was 3-1 same kind of game where Pelham gave up some weak ones. I followed those games closely because I was hoping Pelham would help my Tigers out. In the 2 games against the Tigers one was a 5-0 win by Mamaroneck but Pelham outshot my team by quite a bunch. The other game was close. So I think Fanotgame was suggesting and I agree that Pelham has always had the defense and offense to compete at the top but the goalkeeping was not within the talent level of the rest of the team. Now with a stronger keeper they might stay in those games longer and maybe knock one of them off
if I remember correctly, fanotgame is a Rye fan,, am i correct?? I am glad to hear BIFF didn’t sustain any permanent injuries from the shooting. I would hate to have to massage his wound.
To high school. You are correct. As evidenced by prior posts, I follow the Pelicans closely as they are the arch rivals to my beloved Garnets. Last season’s sectional final between the two teams was a great hockey match. Hoping for a rematch in the finals again this year. Both teams will need to finish ahead of Jay in the regular season and then work their way thru a solid D2 bracket to play each other in the finals. I don’t know anything about the new Pelham goalie. My point was that if he is solid (not necessarily McIndoe, Glaser, Benincassa, Delaverne, Feliu, but just below), that fills a gap Pelham has had to deal with when playing the big boys. I do believe that with the two jr B D men mentioned before, Pelham has a deep and talented defense. Both Duffy and Dzenis can shut down most forwards and rush the puck well. And what team would not want a Mamone/Harms pair as their second D unit? Flory/Emerson is a nice one/two punch at forward. Saying all that, I still believe my young Garnets can match up with the Pelicans and their loaded senior class.
Do not worry about Suffern’s defense. the returning defense is McCarron and Norwin. the second line defense of Byrnes and Fuchs will do just fine. Although the first line D will probably play 2 minutes shifts, the second line will do just fine. And don’t forget, they will have Gabriel in goal. He will pick up the slack.
Sanchez has a relative in Suffern and one in Mahwah and has chosen to take a spot at Suffern that he doesn’t deserve, since most of the kids there have come up through the program. So someone who has been here since Kindergarten will be getting screwed.
As far as the D,there is no way this team can play 3 D they are not athletic enough or conditioned enough. They will have problems against teams like Mamo.
And who could forget Ricky Nelson as Colorado.
Who keeps saying suffern will play 3 D.
To, for a fact,
from what I understand (and might be wrong) Sanchez’s infamous relative happens to be either his mother or father,,(one lives in mahwah and one lives in suffern) Can’t see how someone would have a problem with a family making a very personal decision like that, which is really none of our business. if the kid can play he deserves to be on the ice. I wasn’t aware that a kid had to have 13 years in the district to be eligable. Is this some new rule???
the 3 forward lines I would like to see next year for suffern…
Hill, hiller, sanchez
Jeager, modica, Murphy
gorton, gatta, baker
Postman, I think you are right. i heard his father does live in Suffern. And as for ” for a fact”,Who says he is taking a spot from anyone else. he has not made the team yet and if he does who says he will play. To make the statement that he is taking a spot from someone else is not very smart. Are you afraid he will be taking your sons spot. if you are maybe you should tell your son to move his A_ _
Hey Postman, What about the defense.
as for D of course it will be Norwin and mccarren. then Byrnes and fuchs will slip in every so often. but the first 2 better be in good shape, they will be on the ice a lot!!!! I would hope that schelling will split the top 2 and team one of them up with one of the other 2 ie. Norwin and Byrnes, and McCarren and fuchs. But come crunch time you know who will be on the ice.
postman, you know way to much about suffern.
Changing school districts for sports? Gosh…I’ve never heard of that.
What is exactly coming up through the Suffern “program”?
Is it playing modified. The Saints…an earlier poster alluded to this freshman as playing AAA NJ Avalanche…with no disrespect for the Saints, but the Avs tier 1 teams are usually the among the top age-level teams in the Atlantic region.
I guess those other 2 better be step up, there is no way Norwin and McCarron can be the 2 main D, I heard they are good, but not that good
i like your lines except that sanchez is not as good as everyone is saying. dont get me wrong he is a good player and will deffinetly contribute after this year a lot but he is to small this year and will not be on the first two lines.
suffern will play 4 defenseman in the year coming up. they will be norwin, mccarron, fuchs, byrnes(in any order). obviously in key situations norwin and mccarron will be on the ice, but they will play evenly throughout the season
Numb1, you seem pretty sure of that last comment
Numb1, you seem pretty sure of youyrself. Who knows more about Suffern Hockey, you or Postman
numb1 you’re absolutely correct about the defenseman i couldnt agree more. But who knows maybe schelling will only run 3 defenseman and in my opinion that would be norwin mccarron and fuchs. for the forward lines there seems to be only 5 lockups on the first three lines and that is hill and hiller on the first. jaeger and modica on the second line and gatta on the 3rd line are the only guarantees. Who fills the last spot on the 1st two lines and the other two spots on the 3rd line?
to hkyfan,
i think the 3rd guy on the 1st line will be goetz. this is his 3rd year on the team and hes gotten his chances and hasnt performed but he should get his chance again on the 1st line. he can also keep up with hill and hiller unlike baker or sanchez who are to small to play first line. On the second line i cant make up my mind between baker, murphy and gorton. im leaning towards baker or gorton because i cant see schelling playing a senior over a sophmore if they are at the same level because he wants them to have experience. baker has the speed for that second line and gorton has good size and is agressive.. that should be interesting. with gatta on the 3rd line will be either baker or gorton depending on who isnt on the 2nd line and then it should be murphy or possibly sanchez.
Its a good question that was posted about RTH. They lose a huge core of players. Had the Novick-McKinney-Urban stayed healthy there may had been a different scoring leader. I dont think anybody knows what will happen with them. However, somehow they seem to every year come out and surprise everybody. They tend to be one of the harder working teams and well coached teams. Somehow the coaching staff keeps developing players and more importantly the players keep stepping into those roles. The seniors they lose logged the most minutes and most points. Is there 15 points left on the team? They could have a rocky year but then again I predicted (as did everybody) that they wouldnt win a game in league 1 and shouldnt be there. RTH certainly proved me wrong. I am pulling for them and hope that they continue to be a force in the league.
nys hockey, what you are saying is true. goetz should start out on that first line and then go from there. as for the second line i havent seen baker gorton or murphy play much. does anyone know anything about them?
i cannot say i have seen baker or gorton play but what i have heard they have what you need to play the game. Gorton with the size and ability to play the body very well. Baker with the craftyness to get around guys but his size may be a key factor in the starting job or elsewhere.
suffern1, i say postman knows alot more about suffern than i
Hiller and Hill are 1st line Forwards sure things
McCarron and Norwin are 1st line D sure things
im guessing thats really all anyone knows for sure. the next 8 forwards and 2 defenseman are really up for grabs, not to mention the goalie position. in terms of the forwards, jaeger was on the first line last year, so i’m assuming he may be on this year as well. id say modica and goetz, two upperclassmen who were third liners last year, move up to 2nd line this year. i have seen goetz play and in my opinion he is maybe the fastest skater on suffern, he deserves a shot. as for the next 4 forwards, in the mix is probably gatta, murphy, baker, gorton, etc. i guess whoever works the hardest and earns a spot in tryouts/practices.
schelling will figure it out – he is a great coach who knows how to use the talent he is given. suffern has around 20 returning players from last year, plus some good players coming in from modified – plenty of talent to choose from, and overall looks to be another solid year.
to gone bloggin,
when you say baker’s size may be a key factor in the starting job, do you mean he is big enough or to small?
The difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull is
Lipstick!—Sarah Palin
I think he means that since he is small that might affect his first line chances
where can i find the 2008-09 league game schedules???
I think you are all nuts. You all should get a life. It is apparent that the only people whoo blog are actually the parents of the kids on the team. And it is obvious that when someone blogs about a player, in a good way, that that player is the son of that blogger.
Honestly the 3 kid on the first line and the other 2 forward lines are up for grabs as others have written. What I wrote is just speculation with a lot of time to change my mind… still 8 weeks before the season starts, a lot can happen before then and also after the season starts and the team develops.
Didn’t you just blog? Thank you Dr. Phil, or Dr. Mrs. Phil.
You are right Mr. Postman. We all might be suprised come November. There is about 8 weeks before the season starts, alot can happen in those weeks. Kids that you don’t think have a chance might suprise everyone. We will just have to wait and see.
Hey “Suffern Projection” Stop talking your own kid up, how dedicated is he, he didn’t even play in the CDL. Believe me, Schelling noticed.
who is suffern projections son?
to nuts,
that is not true at all. just because someone writes about a kid in a good way it doesnt mean that it is there parent writing it. maybe you should get a life because no one else on here has a problem with what anyone else is saying except you.
i agree with you also postman and ramapos finest, there is still a lot of time for kids to get bigger and better. and i think “stop” is talking about goetz because i heard rumors he wasnt playing cdl because of some other activity?
no body should be getting mad here on this blog. just because someone compliments a kid does not necessarily mean they are that kids parent. and if they are that parent, why are you getting mad there is no way you can tell if it is a parent or even that kid
to hs hockey fan,
sportspakdb.lhric.org/mainindex.asp
this blog just might be the worst blog in the world. stop talking about lines and wait until the season comes so all the kids can prove themselves. PEACE
WOW
Where is Biff when we need him the most
Where is biff when you need him the most
it is fine to talk about the lines since there is really nothing else to talk about. anyways no matter what schelling decides the lines are, suffern will have a great season and will win the league.
Lets talk about Mitch Norwin
why…
Just out of my own curiosity, how many members of the 92 suffern team were on the Saints team that won the 14u national championship (in 89 i think).
All of you know it alls from Suffern might not care about Sanchez today but in those 8 weeks till it all starts if he does end up taking a spot from one of your kids you wont think it so great that he is here, but then I forgot everyone who plays at Suffern is the best.
so what if he plays. if he does he obviously deserves it
That was a long time ago, 89’ but your answer is zero.
It wasn’t an 14U team, they didn’t have those back then. It was a bantam team that was 14 and 15 year olds. They had 2 suffern players, but none on the 92’ squad. McCarren and Kirschner graduate in 91’. That bantam team consisted of players like the Ferraro brothers, Sean hennessy, and Max Williams, all d. 1 college players.
M. Schuman/S. Palin 2008
wow why is everyone obsessed with sanchez. hes not even what everyone is saying and he is small. you dont all the sudden get big enough to play in 8 weeks and whos spot do you think hes going to take on what line?
I didn’t say what line, but he will take a spot you can bet on it and like I said if he takes your kids spot you wont think he so good anymore and Schelling wont care what anyone says or does he will do what he wants whether you have been in the program or not.
yes sanchez will take a spot but not on the first two lines. the incoming freshman will be more upset because he is going to make the team over one of them. i dont think sanchez is better than any of the sophmores this year but maybe a few of the juniors and deffinetly the freshman.
wasnt there a kid from denver last year . nobody complained before about him”taking time’ from anyone. Never saw this kid play but just because he plays for avalanche doesnt make him a stud. he still will have to prove on ice. suffern coach does not have a history of playing freshman anyway . last year was an exception.
I’m a big Mamo fan. For the people that were talking defence pairings before, here’s a stat. Hagan(43 points) and Zweig(25 points) last season, combined for the most points as a defence pair than any other D pair in the section last season (including suffern).
This is more than pelhams starting 4 defenceman combined! So how are people still saying that pelhams defence is the best? you might say that pelhams D plays very defencively, altho Hagan is very offenceive defenceman(which is not bad), you couldn’t find a more defenceive defenceman than Zweig.
So tell me how people are still saying Pelhams D is the best. I hope I bring up a point.
the only reason those two defenseman had a lot of points last year is because connor gave them the puck. they wont have the puck nearly as much this year because they dont have anyone that can control it.
Stat Fact,
How funny! Hagen got points even when he didn’t touch the puck. Thank the scorekeeper. Isn’t it funny that he got all his assists at home and very few on the road. Wonder why?
I dont think anyone said Pelham has the best defense man. I dont think I read that anywhere. I believe people said the team plays great defense andyes they have good defense man on thst team. They have always had that. I think what was said also was that looking at Pelhams results with perhaps the weakest keepers in the league the last few years that they still are one of the top teams in league 1 and lost inthe finals of the section championship. With goaltending being that weak, the rest of their position players have to be plus at their positions. How else do you explain such success? My vote for top keeper is our keeper Glaser. Hes awesome. Put him in a Pelham jersey the last few years and who knows? Point being if the keepers are weak and the team still is stingy in giving up goals and good chances then they must have great defense man and team defense.
I am a Tiger fan too and those two you mentioned are awesome. I expect the Tigers to go all the way this year.
Ughh, enough with the points already, who cares how many mamo’s players get. I can’t stand Mamo, because I have seen a few of their teams really displaying poor sportsmanship in the past, and I am not even talking about the hockey team, but it does give me a reason to root for whoever is playing Mamo. I actually do like Chaps, but thats about it. Still, they won the whole freakin section last year, and you are going to knock Hagan because someone may have given him a few assists? Mamos section champ, and they deserve all the accolades they get. I don’t have to like it, but good job Mamo, now lets someone beat them and then you can talk.
Out
That kid from Denver, had lived here before and moved back and left right when the season was ending he wasn’t good enough to take anyone spot and didn’t get much time at all.
Mr. “For a Fact”
The incoming freshmen you are referring to has been around sport-o-rama forever, and is well known in Suffern, at least with the 8th through 10th grade crowd. It’s not like he just showed up yesterday. He’s played for the Saints teams before and left when their tier I program fell apart.
Certainly, do not be judging a familiy/schooling situation, that is very common today and really nobodys business.
Most HS programs would be welcoming with open arms. In Suffern, where the competition for ice time is fierce I could understand your anxiety over the prospect of diminished playing time. But, thats the downside of an excellent public school hockey program. Many very good hockey players will get limited chances to contribute.
I am of the thought that he’ll make the team, but see mostly 3rd line time. A very skilled player but still to small this year. By comparison, the Prunesti kid from New Rochelle last year, who came out of the same AAA Avalanche program, was better prepared for high school hockey because of his size. Prunesti would’ve been a 2nd line Suffern kid last year and 1st line this year.
Moderate Blockage
Agreed the AVS…
Prunesti’s size would have enabled him to be on one of the top 2 lines at suffern. Just as the Daniels size enabled them. The Daniels weren’t quite as tall at the same age, but they played big, and were still above average size for frosh. I think the skill set of prunesti was on par with Salt, Hillier and Ruthberg. I would say those 4 are interchangable depending on who you like or who you ask, some would probably say Prunesti is the best of the 4 and some would probably say he is 4th out of the 4. I would say it is pretty close.

i heard that b. newman is an up and coming goalie and could pose a serious threat to Rice and Gabriel for the starting job. Will be interesting to see.

Just wondering what Sophs you are talking about when you say Sanchez isn’t better than any of them.
You might be surprized,I dont remember anyone that have gotten much ice to where you can say that.
i have seen the sophmores play and they are a great group of hockey players. sanchez is good but i have to agree that he is not as good as those 5 sophmores that were on the team as freshman last year. also the freshman last year didnt get much ice time besides jaeger because of the depth that suffern had with all the seniors. if they were freshman this year they would play.
The best 2 “liitle guys” I have seen play in section 1 in the last 10 years were Joey Herman for Clarkstown North and Chris Squires for White Plains (his freshman year only).
Those 2 had extraordinary quickness. Especially Squires who went on to the NTDP after his frosh year.
Although Matt Willows was bigger than those 2 in his soph year, thats the type of quickness and couple of gear speeds needed when you lack size.
I heard through the grapevine that the modified has a few good players, offense and defense that should be on the suffern varsity this year
what modified players?
Someone compared a kid on a league 4 team and compared him to/and being better than some of the league 1 top players-funny stuff.
A few of the modified could be on Varsity a, so what kids did you hear about through the grapevine.
Was down in Philly this past weekend for U18AA Silver Sticks. Nice to see all the Section 1 boys on the ice. Lots of Suffern, Rye and Iona players participating. A few Mamo, Jay, North Roc and Fordham guys. They all looked ready to go. Probably a bunch more playing next weekend for U16AA Silver Sticks.
the two westchester teams took at beating at silver sticks!!!! Combined, they were 0-6!!! and were out scored 22-8!! I believe the great mamaroneck goalie gave up 13 of those. Ramapo Saints lost a tough game in the 1/4 finals after an overtime and shoot-out. So if you think the players on the vipers and mariners are “ready to go” you have some big problems.
Wow..
I really don’t remember the specific comparison your posting about. Can you be more secific.
to silver sticks- The Viper, Mariner and Brewster teams were all very shorthanded for the tourney. That stuff happens this early in the season. A bunch of call ups from lower teams and many forwards filling in at D. The Section 1 kids who are rostered on those teams and played their regular position looked just fine. The Saints looked like they had a pretty full team (with all the Suffern and North Roc kids in attendance). And they played pretty well. The Ice Time Polar Bears with their group of Empire team players also had a good tourney.
Silver sticks
“the great mamaroneck goalie gave up 13 of those.”
what are you talking about – Brewster only gave up 7 goals in three games
What “stuff” happens this early in the season?
High school hockey is 2 months away. I don’t think it was SAT weekend. Perhaps the opening weekend of high school football distracted the players?
I’d just think that AA players (or A and B players for that matter) would be committed to a travel hockey team this early in the season. The “stuff” and other conflicts usaully begins in November.
I’m surprised that the Viper and Brewster coaches would stand for missing an important tournament. I’m less unsure about the Mariners.
The Avs
I think the “stuff” he is talking about is other sports, such as soccer. Also, some kids not into away tournaments this early. Also, some high schools (at least White Plains and RCDS) had early season trips that kids attended.
“not into away tournaments this early” that says a lot about a kid, I would bet there isn’t one person who wants that kid on their team.
Other sports and school trips, well, that probably effects every team equally.
But if your reason is, “just not into away tournaments this early in the season”, than you should not be playing travel hockey with a team that enters a Silver Sticks AA competition.
There are local club teams that play lesser schedules, don’t do away tournaments, and limit to between 10 and 20 games.
WOW
I personally agree, but can’t speak for all families. I don’t think early season touraments are as good as later ones, but when we join a team, we go to all of them – but not all families agree.
actually the more I think about it, “not into away tourn…” and then actually not going, is a typical attitude of many spoiled, bratty, westchester kids. I seem to remember many players missing games for this reason or that reason, which actually was whatever benefitted them the most or just what they wanted to do. Not too often do these kids (or parents) care about what it means to be on a TEAM, or they pick and choose what team they are going to be a part of from day to day.
yes, some families, not all.
Is someone posting that Brewster and Vipers teams were short players for a tournament? Wow, they allowed that? Seems odd as they do not allow those same players to miss games for high school games during the high school season do they?
double standard? Or do these travel programs wish they could eliminate the high school game?
most tournaments require kid miss school or half of day either friday or monday. maybe some parents still feel school just a little more important.
A typical U18 AA team is a mostly HS seniors team. Maybe even a few college kids. Just a few juniors. The college age kids may have orientation. The seniors may be visiting colleges for next year. Some schools have class trips for the upper classmen. A lot of the high school administrations are cracking down on non academic or non medical absenses, so Friday afternoon out of town games could be an issue. Some kids are also playing a school sport in the Fall. Don’t think too many AA skaters simply decided not to show up because Phily was too far to travel.
Anyone wanting to place a bet on the Suffern lines for this season please let me know.
So during the hockey season.. the pro travel hockey bloggers make the case for the importance of travel hockey and that the players being so much better because its such a higher level. Now you guys point out that players are skipping these tourneys because they are not that important… seems that some parents and players will go for any excuse to play the games they want, for the teams they want and for the ice time they want.
It seems the travel folks can spin it however it looks best for them.
They can justify it anyway they can or anyway they want
And the travel coaches are no better. Miss a travel game for a high school and you will pay the price, because high school is garbage, and the clear path to the NHL is through travel.
You can miss tournaments no less for other reasons and other sports, (not even hockey) and thats fine
i would like to place a couple bets
Believe it or not travel is the way to the NHL not HS unless you play for a HS in boston or in minnesota ,however when you are playing in a 16 or 18 AA tournament I think its safe to say your not going far with your hockey career and your going to college to get a good job and get smarter not for hockey so does it really matter if you miss that kind of a tournament
sure it does when you have a team counting on you..I AM EMBARASSED FOR YOU. It is sad your kid will probably grow up to a piece of s… just like you. Or if you are a kid, you are on a really bad path.
Silver Sticks is a pretty significant tournament. Most clubs will require you to attend this tournament unless you have a compelling presonal reason not to, family wedding, etc. It puposely scheduled early in September to avoid high school conflicts for the 16 and 18 age brackets.
The problem with most travel hockey players at this age is that in many cases they are embarking on their 9th or 1oth travel season. It no longer is as exciting as say when you are age 10. Sixteen to eighteen year olds are now into very active social lives. School has just started again, its the first weekend of the big HS football game, followed by parties and dances and other “funner” things to do on a beautiful fall weekend.
I understand that, lots of kids drop out of the travel hockey as midgets. And truth be told if you have been playing hockey for a number of years as an A or AA player, You probably do not have to play midget 18 and you can still play high school hockey at a very good level.
Truth, Travel Team and all of those that believe that “Travel” is the “way to the NHL”
You all need help and need to stop drinking the travel cool-aid. If you want to play college hockey.. you better have a great HS career. End of story. And that HS career better get you to some summer tournaments. And the, you will need a PG year or Junior Year, then college and then maybe NHL. By the way, the Suffern kids drafted…what path did they take…sound familiar …
But lets just keep being delusional.. I am sure it more fun
the suffern kids played 2 years of HS and then went to PREP school which is a big difference fron HS and look at the big names in HS this year in the section Rui, Sigona,Conner,Eck,Regan,Natoli,Ruthberg,King Regan,Natoli, and Rui are the only ones still playing and most likely they will all be done with there hockey careers by the end of the season and sorry to break it to you OUCH ,but if you are playing club hockey at college your not going to the NHL and if you want to say the kids I mentioned above are playing club then fine its not gonna get them anywhere
Also to OUCH
There are NO SCOUTS at HS games, do you honestly think that in travel hockey you have kids scoring 3-4 points a game like the big names around here do, they don’t, in travel there are games where you get no points, in HS you at least manage a point a game if your a good player and the Daniels brothers made there way to the NHL through PREP not Suffern, thats why they left Suffern!!!
I believe that years of travel hockey at the youth level will help you become a real good high school hockey player. That is reasonably achievable.
Once you get to your junior or senior years, if you decide to cut back on your travel hockey, or not play it, you can still remain a good to great high school hockey player. Such examples include Marasco at Somers and Hagen at Mamaaroneck. These 2 seemingly are focusing on other sports, lacroosee and baseball, which have brought them college scholarships.
But their hockey skills honed as youth travel players is still great enough that they are still considered among the best players in the section.
Well said Travel Team
Just read on the Suffern hockey website that Zach Salt made the University of Michigan Club team, 1 of only 2 freshman to be selected. Don’t know much about the level of play, but still a nice accomplishment. Congrats Zach
Now thats terrific. A kid who has had a great high school career, is going to a great college, and is playing, as a freshmen, at a very respectable level.
from what I understand D1 club is at least on par with D3, and some say it might be a higher level. But I guess this could be argued forever.
I echo Travel Team. Doesn’t get much better than that. Accepted to one of Americas top schools in the quintessential college town (Ann Arbor). Playing darn good level hockey without having to sacrafice a large portion of his college experience to the obligations of a varsity sport commitment. Way to go Zach.
I am not talking down the college varsity experience. Having played several varsiy sports a generation or two ago, I know how the commitment takes away from your studies and social life. It is great for some and not so for others. The bonds between college athletes are pretty strong and playing in front of rabid college kids is a blast.
I wonder if the Wolverine club team gets to play their home games at Yost?
Tryouts were at Yost. 60 tried out for 5-6 spots.
They play most of their home games at Yost.
to the truth: the daniels actually were on Suffern varsity for 4 years- didn’t play in 8th grade but played 9th, 10th, and 11th.
Congrat’s Zach! He’ll be playing with Kasey King who was the goalie for Iona Prep’s team two years ago! It’s nice to have local kids playing for top programs!
I love it when you talk about my ACHA. Michigan is actually a D. 2 club team that is on the rise. They stacked their schedule this year with some top D. 2 teams, and a few decent D. 1 club teams. Ending the season with a trip to a perinial power house Florida Gulf Coast team that is coached by a couple of ex. Boston Bruins retiring out in Florida. Good chance that with a good showing, Michigan will move up to a D. 1 club team and enter the Easten Michigan, and Western Michigan league in a year or two.
Enough about the past players. Lets start talking about suffern again. thats all that matters. what about those lines.
The 3 players this hs season that most people reconize as potential d3 players (and maybe d1 with a couple years of juniors) are Willows, Hagen, and Prunesti. Do you think making ETB his first priority is going to help Hagen play college. Maybe a scout will be impressed watching Prunesti score a hatrick against Greeley and offer him a scolarship. Well, maybe if they played in L1 scouts would come cause that is where the real talent is
.
There are 2 routes for somebody from this area to play D1. There is the Prep School route and Juniors route. And those schools only notice you if you play for a really good travel team. When somebody says high school on this blog, they are talking about sec. 1, not prep school (founders league prep school, not a RCDS)
Obviously 18u midget tier 2 isn’t going to get you there, and if thats what you were trying to say, then yes everybody knows.
High school and travel mean different things to different people. Natoli played for Suffern with tons of fans and alot of winning, while his junior B team went something like 4-20. The best example i can thing of the other way is Carmel’s goalie Glaviano. carmel probley had no fans at most games and played at a less intense speed to win maybe 3 games all season, while his viper team won states last year and went to nationals with a final record of 30-5 or something. Different people have different priorities and people should respect that
mrs. glavino
I still don’t hear any Suffern talk
It’s Mrs. GlaviAno, and please don’t leave it out next time-:)

lets hear your line predictions
Line 1 Modica Hiller Jeager
Line 2 Hill Murphy Baker
Line 3 Gatta Gorton Sanchez
defense McCarron Norwin
Byrnes Fuchs Possible splitting them up, but playing Mccarron and Norwin on power plays and penalty kills
L1-Hill-Hiller-Modica
L2-Goetz-Murphy/Baker-Jaeger
L3-Gatta-Murphy/Baker-Sanchez
I could see that. What about the defense
maybe norwin and fuchs and mccaron and byrnes???
Iona preview (tons of speed and size)...

Murphy-Patalano
McCrory
Freshmen/Gizzo
That sounds like a winning season
Actually i’m just a kid that has played travel with him before. But just goes to show you cant say anything nice about anybody that plays outside L1 without somebody accusing you of being his parent.
Ouch is currently playing travel and switched travel programs when he realized that the High School coaches pick up the phone and call the colleges and that those assistant coaches that recruit do show up because of that..as opposed to be told that the “travel” was the way to go. I know I am not making it out of high school…but maybe with some hard work and Junior hockey, if I can make it.. I will have a good college shot. If not, not. But it seems that is the formula that works.
you can’t handle the truth

Kudos to the kids on struggling teams who stick it out.
Glaviano is a very good goalie that could challenge for playing time on many league 1 and 2 teams. Rather, he plays for a traditionally weak hockey school, bringing them a little game respect.
MacIndoe did the same last year.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, DON’T TELL ME YOU ARE COMPARING Glaviano to MacIndoe!!! MacIndoe, got a ton of respect and it was well deserved. If Glaviano has the season that MacIdoe had last year then you can talk, but until I see 50 save games, don’t make the comparison. And this is not coming from a North fan/parent/friend etc…
My comparison is of 2 good players that stuck it out on weak teams in their respective leagues. To each of their teams they brought a little respect.
I’ll let professional scouts determine who is the better goalie since I haven’t seen each play more than once or twice.
He didn’t compare Glaviano to Macindoe, he just said he did the same thing. I do think he is about as good as Macindoe. Same as i think Delaverne is as good as Glaser. Macindoe and Glaser are very good goalies but what makes them different is they play were people pay attention. If i ask anybody that reads this thing to name 10 league 1 defencemen, they could do it. Could any of you suffern people here name 5 defencemen from all of leagues 3 and 4?
To oh please,
You make a very good point. I am not a Suffern fan per se, but a League 1 observer who can only think of 3 lower league dmen (Halpin-SHI, Meile- Ossining and Starpoli- New Ro) that play at a top level. And that opinion was formed more from seeing them in travel games than HS ones. And those guys also move up to FWD when needed for their HS teams. I am sure there are more League 3 and 4 Dmen that are worthy of blog recognition. There are plenty of solid league 2 D men including Meany-North Roc, Ciotti and McNamara- ETB, Cabrielle-Yorktown and Marinelli-PWBV.
Westchester connection
I thought C.King was going to Michigan, did he not make the team or didn’t he tryout.
All the suffernites above say that Sanchez wont take a spot on 1st or 2nd line then the last bloggers have hime on those lines,so its obvious no of you no what you are talking about.
What happen to Michigan
Cody King went to Boston and I assume will play club there as does his older brother at Michigan.
you guys have no idea what you are talking about. Sanchez will not play
Cody King’s brother Casey was a goalie on the Michigan Club team last year. My guess is he will play there again this year. I heard somewhere that Casey may have even had the opportunity to skate some practices with the varsity last season. Cody King enrolled at Boston College’s Undergrad Biz school this Fall. Having visited BC recently with my son, my understanding is that BC does not have a club hockey team, but has a very competitive intramural hockey program. That doesn’t surprise me, as Boston is a hockey hotbed and there must be many D1 wanna bees that still want to play competitive hockey in college.
If Sanchez is good enough then Schelling will play him. That is the bottom line. Schelling does not care what any parent thinks. It is his team and he will play who he wants. It does not matter if the player is a senior or freshman, if he thinks the player will help him get to the states then he will play him. All he cares about is making the states, and if he has to upset some kids and parents while doing so, so be it. The only ones who care if Sanchez plays are the parents of the kids that think Sanchez is going to take their kids spot. If you are that concerned then go out and get your kid private lessons and make him skate his butt off. Remember one thing, NONE OF YOUR KIDS ARE GOING TO THE NHL. So stop your crying.
Very well said
Suffern will win no matter who you throw up on that first line with Hiller and Hill. that line is talented enough to play just them two and norwin and mccaron on defense. It is going to be a great season. you all will see
Its actually not as hard as people think to make a Michigan, or a Boston College D.1 team as a walk on. There are only 18 scholorships, and these teams usually carry over 20, so there are a few spots. I would say most of the top D. 3 and club players are better than these walk ons. Because, why would they sit on the 4th line and on the Taxi Squad on Michigan, when they can be a star at Penn State, or Plattsburg.
are you a coach of some club team in the ACHA?
ACHA are you dillusional…its easy to make a D1 team as a walk on? This is one of the hardest things to do. The scholarship guys I have jobs, there are no scholorship guys that have been recruited and other guys that are top players looking to make the team. Yes, walk on do happen and they are the great stories of college hockey.
Why would they want to be 4th line D1 instead of top line club…becuase true athletes want to compete against the best and prove themselves. Because they grow up wanting to play for Michigan, BU or Minnesota Gophers.
You cant compare Plattsburgh and Penn State they are two different levels of hockey.
fanotgame,
bc does in fact have club hockey, d2 in acha, just like michigan…
http://www.eaglesclubhockey.com/
No, I wish, getting a good(and I emphasize the word good)college hockey coaching job is tough to do unless you played in the NHL, or else you get really lucky. Even at the Club level, a lot of the coaches are ex-NHLers. There also aren’t too many good colleges around our area to coach at. There may be one or two, but its not like Mass, or Minny. I did play both NCAA d. 3 and D.1 club hockey though, and my old coaches are still there as well as most of the ones I played against. Albeit some have flip flopped, the old Nichols coach is at Curry, the old Rutgers coach is at Delaware, the old Delaware one is at Eastern Michigan. I talk to a lot of them. I can tell you this…A lot of them get their players on reccommendations. Also there is not a lot of recruiting going on, they try to get one or two of the best from their own area, which has always hampered our kids. And, they only recruit players they feel can be first liners. They will never recruit someone to be a 3rd line player or a developmental player, because they don’t know if they will be around for that long. Some of the weaker teams will take anyone, and then have a massive tryout.
To kidding,
well, it has happened, Im just trying to provide info, and facts, look up Jim Gehring, was an ok NCAA D1 player, he decided to play D. 1 club for west chester in his hometown of Penn. instead. He wound up being the league MVP, and captain of the USA ACHA team last year. Guys have gone the other way to, look up John Brennan, he was one of the University of Rhode Island better players, and like you said he wanted to play the best and transfered to NorthEastern where in 2 years he played in 2 games. These are just 2 there are many others. You would think kids would want to play at the highest levels, but sitting on the fourth line, or just practicing and not playing will wear on anyone after a while. Trust me on this…Penn States best player and Plattsburgs best player could walk on to any NCAA D.1 team in the country.
why would they sit on the 4th line and on the Taxi Squad on Michigan, when they can be a star at Penn State, or Plattsburg.
well…because they would have a degree from Penn state or Platsburg as opposed to michigan hahahaha
Don’t plan on walking on at any D1 program. Its a tough road to travel, statistically slim at best.
The D1 programs do have only 18 scholarships. The “twist” is that very few of the recruited players are on “full” scholarship. If a team has granted 8 full scholarships they can have 20 more players on 2 for 4’s(half scholarship). There are a number of partial scholarship scenarios used to round out full rosters. Just to top it off, they do bring in “recruited walk ons” to.
If you want to play collegiate hockey, go where you know you are wanted.
Nothing wrong with a Penn State diploma. Probably even beter than Michigan.
Sec1 fan, I have never heard of that, every D. 1 coach I have talked to told me they do a 5,4,5,4 meaning in a four year span, they give 5 kids full scholorships the first year, 4 the next, 5 the next, and 4 the next, so in one cylce they have 18 players on scholorships, very few teams do partials unless they dont give 18. Some baseball teams only give 6, this is done so they can get a dominant pitcher or 2, so they give 2 fulls and split up 4 wholes to the rest of the team. Its a hassel though, because other factors go into it, ie. who gets their books for free, who gets free lunch, who is allowed to have an on campus job, ex.
You are right on one thing though sec1 fan – go where you are wanted, not where you want to go.
ACHA – No disrespect, but you’ve given out a lot of misinformation and I would hate to see anyone reading this blog take this information to heart. Maybe things have changed alot since you’ve been in school. Again, no disrespect. Walk on to a D1 team? Play lotto – equal chance. Next: heavy recruiting is going on in the NCAA obviously but also in the ACHA. Very heavy. Also: No smart or respectable coach is recruiting just players in their area. Isn’t that a little ridiculous? Take a look at any roster – D1, D3 and top club. You see a concentration of players from a specific area – what would be the point in doing that? Players today are playing all over the country in various respected tournaments and the college coaches and their assistants have the schedules of the players they’re interested in and are out there watching & talking to these boys endlessly. Finally: Massive tryouts? That’s when your walk ons try to make a team that the coach has already recruited his 20+ players. Maybe on a DIII team coach will get lucky and see 1 or 2 decent walk-ons to complete the roster. NCAA is a tough achievement where very very few from our area will make it. The very top D1 club teams, Penn State, Delaware etc. are just as hard because they have many transfers from those 4th line NCAA DIII schools and 20 and 21 year old freshman straight out of prep and juniors. Let’s not give false hope. If your goal is to play college hockey it was best said by sec1fan: “Go where you are wanted”.
So some people on here are saying MacIndoe, Glaser,Delaverne and Glaviano are the top goalies in the section, what order would you put them in???? and who do Delaverne and Glaviano play for?
To Mimi. Thanks for the BC info. We were at the BC Athletic dept over the summer where they said no club hockey. Guess our info was incomplete. Good luck to Cody King if he decides to try out.
Mimi- Just read the article on the link. Sounds like a group of passionate hockey players recently built the club program without support or even recognition from the university. Maybe that is why the athletic department was so quiet about it when we spoke to them this past summer. Now that they are ACHA sanctioned and have the hot BC name, the BC club hockey program should thrive. Sounds like a great outlet for those players who want to stay involved in the game even if they might not quite have the makeup to skate for the defending national champs.
To Goalies-
Here are my thoughts on top area goalies (the super 8)assuming McIndoe returns to top form from his torn ACL:
1. Gluck (RCDS Jr./Mariner 18AA)- Played very well at Empires. A big game goalie.
2. McIndoe (North Sr./Saints 18AA
rehabbing knee)All state and deservedly so.3. Glaser (Mamo Sr./Brewster 18AA)- Smaller athletic goalie. Can be absolutely super. Needs to be a bit more consistent.
4. Benincasa (Rye Sr./Viper 18AA)- Same coments as for Glaser.
5. Felieu (New Ro Sr./Viper 18AA)- Solid travel goalie
6. Delaverne (KPV Jr./Brewster 16AAA)- All the tools (size, quickness). Have only seen him at Empire tryouts (playing thru injury)and HNIB showcases.
7. Gibbs (Rye Sr./Mariner AA)- Bigger than Benincasa and quick on his feet. Not quite the glove hand of the Rye starter. This guy would start on most top Sec1 teams.
8. Glaviano (Carmel Jr./Viper 16AA?)- Little guy who gets shelled constantly in HS hockey. Have seen him stand on his head in travel games, too.
Honorable mentions include: 1. Suffern’s Gabriel (Saints 18AA) (who I have only seen at Empire tryouts and down at Silver Sticks last week) and Yorktown’s Parra (Brewster Empire Jr B), who goes very hot and very cold.
fanotgame,
just a couple corrections with the L3 and 4 dmen. Halpin is a travel Dman but (atleast last year) played forward for hs. Miele is usually a forward for travel but plays d for hs. As for starpoli, the only time i’ve known him to play defence was on new ro’s power play last year, otherwise he’s usually a forward. But i’ll give you credit, you had an idea.
As for the goalies, i would make a few minor changes but i have a hard time rating goalies cause their situations are so different. I think we can agree that all of those goalies are close and can be better then the rest on a good day. The only thing i completely disagree with is refering to Glaser and Benincasa as smaller goalies. They are both about 6’. Glaviano is the smallest (maxpreps said 5’5” or something) and Feliu and Gluck are smaller (maybe 5’8”ish, its tough to tell with goalie equipment on). But other then that, i’d say you did a pretty good job.
When I meant smaller, I was referring to the space they fill. Agree Glaser and Benincasa are a bit taller than Gluck. But, with his equpment on, Gluck seems to cover a lot more area. Maybe just an optical illusion. Never intended to say the Rye and Mamo goalies were short.
The RCDS goalie has an awesome PR machine. Hes pretty good, but hes not the best.
yeah im sure hes telling people to write on the blogs for him…only suffern does that
Gluck or Gibbs vs. Glaser this Sunday 11:45 AM at Playland.
Didn’t know we had infants visiting this site.
I just mentioned it cause being a small goalie is a disadvantage. It is a skill to make yourself look big. The main reason Natoli was so good was because he was already big and still played big. I like rooting for little guys like Lerg (5’6”) at michigan state because he needs to do so much more then that maine goalie that was 6’7”. Anyway, that shouldn’t change anything. The best goalie is the one that keeps the puck out of the net, however big he is.
ACHA, do you just make this stuff up? 5-4-5-4, wow what coach did you speak to ??????????
full scholarships in D1 are the EXCEPTION, not the rule. Pull up a D1 roster, its not 18 and a couple of walk ons. It is a fact that partial scholarships are the norm. If you play your way into a first liner, you may get bumped up to full. The only incoming players that get full rides are the studs which usually means they are NHL drafted or will be.
Season’s approaching… top 5 players in the section in order- F and D
To Wonderer- Top 5 is tough. There are a lot of really good players. How about top 10?
In Section 1 Schools:
FWDS
1.Willows- North
2.Hagen- ETB
3.Hiller-Suffern
4.Urban-RTH
5.Marasco-SNS
6.Prunesti- New Ro
7.Flory-Pelham
8.Pesce-SHI
9.McCarrick-WP
10.Fine-Mamo
10.O’Conner- North Roc
D
1. Hagen- Mamo
2. Dzenis- Pelham
3. Duffy- Pelham
4. Meany- North Roc
5. Sganga- Rye
6. Halpin- SHI
7. McNamara- ETB
8. Ciotti-ETB
9. Meile- Ossining
10.Norwin- Suffern
Now, I know Suffern and Mamo fans will probably go ballistic over my list, since there are only 2 Mounties and 2 Tigers on it. But, it is the depth of those teams that bring them to the top of the Section, not a few star players. And I can hear it now from the Suffern fans that Norwin should be much higher on the list. Not yet. In HS hockey, your stars have to score goals. That includes defensive stars. So, unless you skate like the wind and are an absolute lock down defensemen who can always move the puck out of the zone (Sganga is there and young Norwin is getting there) you have to score goals from the blue line to make my list.
If you were including the local privates, Iona’s Molinaro and Cambria would find themselves somewhere in the list of top FWDs.
I would also include Oliverio in top ten mix. Don’t know enough about others to know who to eliminate.
Travel Team? Where do you get that scholarship info? NCAA allows 18 full scholarships per program for Division I hockey. Most, if not all D1 players are on Full Ride. I would agree with on most of the other sports where roster size is much greater than scholarship availability. ie- Lax, Baseball etc….
What about Jackson from Mamaroneck? What about Momone from Pelham?
Scholarship information? You have me confused with another poster. I don’t pretend to no that stuff. Just that it is darn difficult to receive an NCAA D1 scholarship.
It’s easier to save all the money you would have spent on hockey and put in a college fund, rather than play for a free ride.
To high school. I would love to have both Jackson and Mamone on my team. I am sure their respective HS coaches give them high marks. Just don’t think they are at the tippy top for the Section. Jackson is a smooth, sneaky, creative player. Doesn’t possess much speed or size, but is so creative in getting the job done. A little chippy and won’t back down from anyone. The kind of player you love on your team and hate to play against. Mamone is a solid HS defender. Hasn’t played travel in many years, so doesn’t really skate at the high level of those mentioned on my list.
Mamoner the Boner should most certainly be on that list. And also I think we are trying to rank League 3/4 guys too far up there. I would rather have most of the L1 forwards who are playing the tough schedule over some of these L3 L4 guys who may have tremendous skill, but have faces a physical opponent like Pelham, Suffern, or RTH.
Marasco is a little too high, I would have Prunesti and Flory over him…
Heard that Hill and Hiller tore it up at Silver Sticks this past weekend with their linemate of O’Connor. Thats a dangerous line. Should do well in their travel season.
.
To Silver Sticks. Having the two Mounties play on the same travel line the next 2 months will be a nice advantage come HS season. With those built in synergies, they can accomplish more than they would by coming together for the first time in November. Hiller is a real playmaker who makes everyone on his line better. Have not seen much of Hill, but if those 2 and the other fwd on that line click, a lot of points could be put up. I think WPs McCarrick and Altieri might also skate together on Mariners 18AA. Same benefit there.
Like your list fanotgame. i was up at empires and have watched both during many highschool games and would put Hiller above Hagen. Both are exceptional players in the section but truthfully feel Hiller has the edge.
To Sec1 Fan- Maybe Marasco has leveled off a bit as he focuses on a D 1 LAX career. But, anyone who as an incoming sophomore made that ‘06 Silver Medal Empires team with the Daniels twins still has to have a pretty good HS game left.
To Agree Almost All- I could go either way with those 2. Gave the younger kid the nod.
Yah, who do these league 3 and 4 punks think they are! Fanotgame, stop being such an unbiased jerk. You’re a disgrace to League 1 fans.
To Sec1 Fan- Marasco may have leveled off in hockey as he pursues D1 Lax, but anyone who as an incoming sophomore made that ‘06 Silver Medal Empires team with the Daniels twins, Ryan McKiernan, ect. goes to the top of my list.
To agree almost all- Hard to pick betweeen those 2. Gave the nod to the youngster.
I know posters were ranking the best players for high school for this coming season. It looks like that there is a bias toward travel players with the assumption that the travel players are always better than high schoolers not playing travel. If a player is on a travel team it does help that player become better but it does not mean that a travel player is better than all those not playing travel.
Some travel programs are very strong and competition for those roster spots are hard to come by. Although with so many travel programs around, the explosion of “juniors” or glorified midget teams the travel can be watered down. Some players choose not to play travel that should not mean that they automatically go to the back of the line talentwise. Travel is not the end all and further there have been many instances where travel players who are on high school teams are not even the best players on there teams.
Most higher level travel kids do well in high school, many do not. I feel ranking players and giving the travel players the top spots just because they play travel is short sighted
Don’t even try to argue travel rules person.
Most travel people will just never acknowledge that a non-travel player could ever be on par with a travel person. You are wasting your breath. However, they did through Marasco in there, and I don’t think he has played travel since he was a freshman or sophmore
If you want to become a very good high school hockey player, you should be playing travel hockey at least beginning at age 10, age 12 the latest. If you never played youth travel, i know of league 3 and 4 kids who turned themselves into “nice” complimentary skaters or goalies by their junior year
If you give up travel hockey while in HS you could remain a very good player, see the Marasco example and I guess Connor (Mamaroneck) did not play travel his junior and senior years.
Someone please make me aware of an example of a recent kid who never played travel, as a youth, and became an all section quality player.
That would be akin to never playing little league baseball or CYO basketball and becoming an all star in those sports.
Your right travel team, I am sure there are a few exceptions, anyone correct me if I’m wrong, but when North had that outstanding line of D’aadio (does anyone know where he is playing this year) Froatz, and I forgot the other guy. I don’t think Froatz ever played travel at least early on. I know John Foster grew up playing on “B” teams until later on, Ed Jovanovski didn’t play hockey until he was 11. Us Ranger fans know of Nick Fotiou who didn’t start playing hockey until he was 16. And of course who many consider the greatest college hockey player of all-time, and who many don’t know until the movie came out was supposed to be the star of the 1980 olympic team, Joey Mullen made the transition from roller to ice in his middle teans. But, and it happens in every sport especially soccer and hockey, non-travel players automatically get dismissed as the weaker players. Now listen eveyone, if your highschool team only practices once a week, then you need to get on the ice some other way, or else indeed the travel players will make you look foolish.
ACHA…I beleive the very good CN line of D’aadio, Froatz and Gellis all played travel with Ramapo Saints.
But now you have jogged my memory and the best 3 kids CN ever had at the same time, Joe Hutchko, Dan Quatruccio and Joe Herman, were not big travel players. These kids (at least 2 of the 3) were big pond hockey(at Congers Lake) and roller players. Later on in high school they started playing with the Ramapo Junior C Rangers, a good but not great level of play. That said, they won a Junior C national championship.
Hutchko went on to have a very nice D3 college career. All 3 were all-section in high school.
The CN team they were featured on beat Suffern and made it to the NY State DII final before losing to a powerful Salmon Lake High School (10-0!), probably the best team in the State that year.
Herman and Quartuccio always played travel, and Herman was captain of most travel teams he played on, I know Hutch played with the Ramapo Rangers, but I think you are correct, I don’t think he played much travel growing up.
I just think its grossly unfair to assume that every travel player is better than everyone not playing travel.
I do not know the breakdown of which high schoolers play travel and which do not. I do know that there are many travel teams maybe too many and the teams are watered down.
Therefore a player of average ability can probably find a home on a travel team where years ago they could not
Morasco was a good player. He tried to play Juniors but he was over his head. His type of play in Juniors just was not good enough! He did the right thing and stayed with Lacrose.
fanotgame,
Jackson…...LOL Give me a break!
I thought Herman did play travel, thats why I said 2 of 3, but was apparently wrong on Quartuccio.
to Section 1 Fan. Not “making it in juniors” doesn’t mean you can’t be a top HS player. The jr game often emphasises physical play over finesse, and the HS games are called much, much closer by the HS officials than a typical junior game. The HS game rewards finesse and speed over physical play. I think that can also be said for Empire play as comared to juniors. As an incoming sophomore, Marasco played on that ‘06 Silver Medal Empire team with Ryan McKiernan and the Daniels twins. That team tied Western when they had Patrick Kane (1st oerall NHL pick) skating for them. My bet is Marasco has plenty of game left.
Does anyone know how Fordham,Stepinac and Iona will be this year. I know Stepinac lost alot of their top players (Reagan and Datino) and Iona lost their top players (King, McCabe and DiMario). Don’t think Fordham lost that many impact players?
But will these teams be competitive this year?

Fordham will have a competitive team. Their strength most likey will be their goal-tending but not sure how strong their defense will be with McKenzie gone.
Stepinac will also be competitive but Lost their Goalie (Reagan). And I’m not sure if they have any other scorers other than Miano.
Iona will be strong again. Lost McCabe,King and DiMArio. Goal tending might be their weakness but they have at least 5 decent defensemen that will help out their goalie. HAve two powerful freshman from JV moving up (Nolan and Lynett). Take those two and add them to the other forwards (Cambria, Lopez, Molinaro, McCardle, McElroy, Baum, Traficante, Pellow), and you have alot of weapons.
http://www.achahockey.org/files/roster_2009_us_numerical.pdf
Team USA for the ACHA has been released. As you can see, while most are 20 or older, the ACHA is legit with the ages. The oldest player is Jim Gehrig who sat out a year after transfering to West Chester after a productive freshman year at D. 1 NCAA Mercyhurst. He will be 25 in October.
Section 1 fan,
See comments posted September 9, 7:24pm…gives the Iona lineup
Forwards have tons of experienced speed and scoring touch (cambria, molinaro, mcardle, traficante, lopez, etc.)…as well as some should-be-fun-to-watch newcomers (lynett from jv, Brewster-product Nolan who had to sit from transferring)…they also have some fast boys who love to hit (older pillow, hylton…)
D should be a solid unit with tons of size and stability…gillespie, patalano and murphy are pretty much college sized…kirincic has that calm, smooth touch for a smaller D-man (zubov-like)…and mccrory is solid as well
Goalie is iffy…sophomore gizzo shined 2nd half of jv (was the reason they almost beat stupidly dominant chaminade in a playoff game last year)…supposedly there is a brewster-product freshman…word on the street is that the brothers (Gaffney is a nut haha) are trying to get a goalie or two to transfer in before the season starts
All in all, the Friday after thanksgiving, 5:15 at playland is always a fun one to watch…usually the league opener for both Iona and Fordham…
Fordham will be pretty good with their young goaltenders maturing. Stepinac does have other scoring threats including Muccio, Yankowski and Rueda. Iona has lots of skaters that all the top teams would like to have on their rosters. Even if Molinaro, Cambria and Lopez miss a lot of the HS games due to juniors, the above list shows just how deep the Gaels are at forward. They will have guys on their second and third lines that could skate on the top lines for the top Section 1 teams. Iona may need all that firepower. I hear their tender is a converted Lax goalie.

Here you’re a Rye follower. Who are their anticipated lines this coming season?
One of the Rye coach’s primary in season goals is to build 3 relatively even forward lines. Unlike a lot of other HS coaches, I think Friesen really believes you need 3 lines to win a tough playoff game. The lines won’t necessarily play even shifts, but all 3 lines will be in the rotation. Maybe two are a little better than the 3rd, but the 3rd line has to be playable. At a small school like Rye, that means playing underclassmen alongside upperclassmen on each line. He might put his top fowards out together on the first power play unit or to kill a penalty at a crucial time, but during 5 on 5 play, he does not skate all his top 6 forwards together on two lines. So, projecting lines is tough. He will likely move the boys around during the beginning of the season to get the balance he always looks for. Sorry I couldn’t give you more specific info.
This Rye strategy also explains why their top forwards are not always at the top of the scoring lists. The top forwards don’t play together, but rather support younger players on separate lines. Last year both Eck and Rogers were all state, anchoring separate, very balanced lines. Just think of the points those 2 together would have put up had they skated together? But, then the remaining lines would be more vulnerable. A team playing this way tends to score less often, but also gives up less goals, as they don’t run the risk of having a weak line out against another team’s top line. The trick is to mix and match so you have some balance, but also retain one line with some extra scoring punch. Need to score a few goals to win games.

If lines are a problem to project, how about the 9-12 kids expected to be on those lines, in no order?
Alphabetically (and with travel team affiliation)the ones with prior varsity experience include:
Beber- Vipers
Fullenweider- Vipers
Holmes- Mariners
Katsuta- Avalanche
Keogh- Rangers (not this yr due to HS football)
Mundinger- Mariners
Rosenfeld- Mariners
Thompkins- Mariners (not this year due to HS football)
There are a few other sophomore forwards who currently play on Viper and Mariner Midget teams who have a good shot at making the team. A decent mix of speed ( a couple of burners) and size (4 pretty big boys). Not a bad HS FWD lineup.
who will be the biggest surprises this year in sctn one on defense and forwards for suffern, mamk, rye, pelham
Don’t know much about the guys at Suffern who fly under the radar. I think Mamo’s Jackson will do much better than Suffern fans think. Katsuta for Rye will have a breakout year after an injury riddled sophomore season (much like Pelham’s Emerson did last year as a junior after his injury shortened sophomore year). Rivera for Pelham will be a real contributor, whether or not he plays on the Flory/Emerson line.
Mamaroneck
-offenceive Suprise will be C.Glaser(not to be confused with bother goalie) really keeps his head up and makes passes others can’t see, and can skate the puck up the ice. big help to Conners success last year.
-Mamo’s Defencive suprise will be Zweig, who is one the most underated players in the section, one of the best defencive skaters, and can put up sneeky points.
Suffern
off. suprise Modica- big guy with solid talent, will get the minutes this year to show his stuff. Can skate well and has a hard shot
def supise- all the defencemen will come out better that expected! they’r undreated, but by a little.
do you know how to spell?
Fanotgame
Marasco played Empires that yr only because who was the coach and where he played travel that yr, don’t try to put him on a list with guys who were drafted by the NHL and guys who play USHL and got D1 scholarships ,he was very average at best and playing in the league he was in and scoring all those points against mostly below average players just doesn’t cut it.
Lacrosse is where he should be.
hey for all of you who want to knock our area saying that they send slim to none players anywhere heres a short list of kids playing NCAA Division 1 and 3 or big time juniors right off the top of my head.

No, but you might be the only one who has tried to figure it out.
who is it?
who is fanotgame?
Obviously Rod Gilbert, the ambassador of NY hockey.
your one hell of a blogger. why not try to figure out who lives for this stuff
Kevin Clare – NTDP U17 Captain 08-09 (big time juniors) (New Rochelle/Fordham)
No, you aren’t the only one who knows who he is.
I know who he is.
sec1 fan
Who cares who he is. Alot of us know who he is. The bottom line is he has claimed his allegiance to Rye, does not promote his son, and has insightful comments. That’s all that counts.
Suffern will take on Clarkstown North for the section title. Hiller will rival up against Willows as the best two players in the section carry their teams. There will be no Mamk or Pelham this year. Just North and SUffern.
Eric Thomasian did not play BU nor Ontario Reign, that is a total lie. Dont believe that at all.

Showing some love to this topic “new to this wordpress”. I defiantly agree with it also. If you really think about it than it all makes alot of sense
