Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley with Harold Gutmann

Coaching news and our future

September
15

Well another school year is here, and that only means one thing — two months until hockey season. Seriously, I’m happy to see how many people are supporting the hockey blog already — it should be a great season.

Before I go any further, here’s some news right off the bat. Nyack/Tappan Zee was approved as a merged team and will be coached by Nyack coach Mike Hughes. You can debate the merits of some merged teams (Lakeland/Panas lacrosse, for instance), but I think this one’s the reason they were created — both teams would have folded otherwise. I wish the Dutch Indians luck so they can both get back on their feet.

Next, Chris Huntington had the interim tag taken off — he is now officially the John Jay coach. He seemed to have the support of the players (and, importantly nowadays, the parents) last season, so despite losing a lot of talent, the Indians might be an interesting sleeper in Division II. The last thing they needed was a fourth coach in three seasons, so it’s good to see Huntington back.

Finally, Clarkstown North has hired a new coach — Andrew Trust, who teaches special education in the middle school and the Rams modified coach for 2 1/2 years. Trust was in the Clarkstown school district through fourth grade before going to private school. He graduated from Bergen Catholic in ‘95. “We’re certainly looking to bounce back this year,” Trust said.  Obviously the Rams are a fascinating story — star goalie on the mend, big-name additions, trying to bounce back from one-win season, and now a new coach.

In the meantime, this isn’t directly hockey-related, but it’s about an exciting future for the direction of our coverage. Click here for Gameday Central, and you’ll see that we just did a live streaming broadcast of four football games this past weekend (Rye-Nanuet, Dobbs Ferry-Rye Neck, White Plains-Scarsdale and Mahopac-Mount Vernon), plus a half-hour football show filmed in our office. Just in the past five years we’ve added online stats, photo galleries, video highlights, and of course blogs, and clearly we’re just getting started.

Harold, thanks for the timely post ;-)

This should help the carpal-tunel in my wrist, not scrolling down past 500 posts.

  2. Thanks Harold

Harold – you have gone above and beyond with posting hockey news even during the offseason, appreciate the update.

Best of luck to Nyack/TZ, but hopefully mergers will slow down a bit.

CN is definetely an interesting story this year and a team to watch. Best of luck to the new coach. McIndoe in net (anyone have an update on how well he is progessing?), Willows and Shuman carrying the offense, and a couple young talented defensemen – the D men I am referring to are Byrnes, who had a solid freshman year last year, and i believe a freshman this year who is coming up from modified and i hear is very very good (can anyone confirm?).

    Coaching.

This is a rarely examined topic. We are quick to criticize players for their weakness but the people running these programs are basically not talked about.

With a couple of exceptions the hockey pedigrees for most section 1 coaches are very light. Compare the hockey coaches experience to your high school coach in football, baseball, and basketball. It is usually not as impressive.

Of course, the people in the coaching age ranges, lets say 35 to 55, mostly grew up when hockey was truly a secondary sport, not as well organized as today, and when there were even less good coaches.

The subpar coaching usually manifests itself in the high school practices. It takes a very organized and knowledgeable hockey person to effectively practice up to 20 kids, of varying skills, perhaps 2 to 3 times a week in an hour long slot. I have witnessed some very poor practices over the years. The game coaching itself is not as difficult, but bad practices usually result in poor game performance.

I was reading a profile on a very succesful New Jersey high school coach and not surprisingly he is not a teacher. Of course it is great if you can get a teacher who is a good hockey person. However, I’d like to see more schools get good hockey people first, teacher or not. Ultimately these people are responsible for hockey program budgets exceeding $50,000. With that type of money involved, the persons ability to run a program should be the first consideration.

  4. mimi

back in the day of early CHSHL years, Iona’s coach (Kowal) was not a teacher and had that intimidating, no-BS, serious tone…travel team, definitely know what you’re talking about…

  5. coaches

There are a lot of coaches with tons of experience in high school hockey. Just research all the HS coaches. type in their name + hockey on a search engine like yahoo, and you will be suprised just how many HS coaches, while they may be teachers as well, have great playing and coaching backrounds.

Also, while I do not know of the new North coach. I like the fact they took someone who paid their dues in the modified first. Something Lynch never had the opportunity to do.

  6. Travel Team

Poor practice sessions are probably the number one reason kids leave high school hockey programs. Good and average players both.

The games are fun. They are the reason many stay.

But if practices are pointless, the good kids will unfavorably compare HS practice to their club practices, and the bad kids are often ignored and/or not getting proper skill coaching.

At some point kids will question the usefulness of investing 6 hours practice per week (ice time and transportation) into an activity.

  7. Travel Team

I hope the new CNorth hockey coach also works out. Rockland hockey has been in a decline and poor coaching is certainly part of it.

Both Clarkstowns should be better, Nyack and TZ forced to merge, Pearl River losses lots of kids to nearby St. Joes and Bosco in New Jersey. North Rockland has been a nice surprise these last 2 years.

Only Suffern, which clearly has coaching excellence, is rock solid.

Not to demean the selection, and I do admit to liking Coach Lynch, what is the background of the CN coach? Attending clarkstown schools through 4th grade and graduating from Bergen Catholic in 1995 does not say much.

Did he play at Bergen Catholic? That i’d like to know. Dan May of Bergen Catholic (if he was there in 95) and the New Jersey Avalanche is a great coach! Learning from Coach May would be great experience for any aspiring coach.

I tried Yahooing and googling some of the section 1 coaches, like suggested. Not surprisingly the known good ones came up. Alot of the others had occasional references to Journal News articles and this blog only.

  8. Harold Gutmann

    Travel team,
Trust played four years of varsity at Bergen Catholic, and then club hockey at Oneonta. I also forgot to mention that Trust’s assistant will be Ken Holvig, who I believe was the first hockey coach in Clarkstown North history 35 years ago.

Also, Trust said McIndoe’s rehab is going well and he is expected to be ready for the start of the season.

  9. compare farily

Good posts on coaching, but be fair, just because you are a “travel” coach does not make you better or more of a coach than a high school coach. This is the same argument presented on this blog all year, where assumptions are made that a travel player is “always” more talented than a high schooler who does not play travel. Sometines travel coaches are fathers with little experience or could be less desirable personalities. With high school for the most part or at the better schools they will screen these people carefully, and at least they normally are good people. USA hockey just got into the screening of coaches recently which is good when dealing with children. I caution making judgements on all high school coaches, and assuming that travel coaches are always better. Theres good ones and bad ones in both venues

  10. Marasco Guy

I dont know who thinks this guy C.Huntington at JJ is so great, have seen him in action thought he was pretty much a jerk and kind of just stands on the bench and does nothing during a game

  11. Travel Team

Harold, thank you for the additional information. It sounds like a very good hire. A good high school program and a good college club program. I’m especially glad to hear of the assistant he has. His sons were all excellent players.

To “compare fairly”..your points are valid and there are very many ordinary and bad travel coaches.

But I am speaking about high school coaches. They are paid approximately 5 to 7 thousand per year, pensionable money if you are a teacher. They manage $50,000 plus programs. Many are good people, but not so good coaches. Practice sessions consisting of “open hockey” scrimmages and line sprints are not practicing. Try to place the best people in charge of highly funded taxpayer programs is my cry here. At least if you have a bad travel coach you can go somewhere else the next year. Not so easy with a school.

BTW, my screen name “Travel Team”, denotes a travel bias. But actually I prefer high schol hockey and sports for the intangible, thrills and lifelong memories it provides. Why else would I be way to much on this blog. I picked this name about a year ago in reponse to a travel team post and stick it with for consistency.

  12. coaches

Travel – team. I think you are talking about the minority here. Hockey is better today than it was years ago. I can only think of about 3 teams that run their teams with the old scrimage for an hour and sprint for 15 minutes routine.

Even a low level team like Carmel, has a travel coach that is with Brewster that has well structured practices and game plans.

  13. I agree

I agree with Marasco guy. Huntington really isn’t a good coach. He has favorites and plays them no matter how bad they preform. Not impressed with him or the way he controls a team on the ice!

  14. alumni

Great to hear that Ken Holvig is coaching High School Hockey again. Played goal for him on that original team at North and the 75’ Championship team the following year. One the best people I’ve ever known.

  15. CN Coach

Is it Ken Holvig Sr. or Ken Holvig Jr. that is the assistant coach for CN? I heard it was the son, who is I believe in his twenties, and not the older one? Can somebody confirm?

  16. Absolutely

Marasco guy is 100% correct. Buy him dinner and you’ll get all the playing time you want!

  17. CN Assistant

I believe it is Ken Holvig, the son, that is the assistant. That is what I heard also.

  18. Section 1 Fan

Does John Jay really know what there in for? Do you realize because of him last year, Datino(Stepinac), Keagan (RT/H), Eck (Rye), McCabe (Iona), King (Iona), Novick (RT/H) refused to play for Brewster! What does that tell you when 6 of the top players in the area would not play for him? Good luck John Jay!

  19. Dont throw him under the bus already

I dont think it was just the coach. Those players realized that “junior” travel hockey does not get you the exposure it claims. Also, unless I am mistaken, all of the programs mentioned do not make any exception for travel hockey to miss practice or games. They are some of the top programs in the area and have excellent coaching (to keep with the coaching them of the blog). Its not fair to judge the new coach until the season gets underway.

  20. Section 1 Fan

Looks like Natoli’s Junior career didn’t start off well. Gave up 9 goals, might be a long year.

  21. ACHA

Who did they play is that a misprint on the AJHL site, or did he really have 84 shots in that game?

  22. Section 1 Fan

ACHA, Only had 43 shots and 9 went in. Must of been a long day! BELOW ARE STATS FOR GAME:

Goalie Name Minutes S SA %
    Tom Natoli 60 34 43 0.791

  23. ACHA

Oh, ok, the AJHL page says he had 83 shots, not 43. Well hopefully he can be at it, atleast one more year after this before college. I think he really needs to improve on his speed moving around the net. I loved the way he would get the puck bring it back in to the crease or try and stop it around the boards, but he always seemed a little slow doing it. I think once he gets all the lateral movements up to speed, he will be great.

  24. Section 1 Fan

In my opinion, both Reagan and Natoli are good goalies. Nothing special. Might make a D3 school but I doubt it. Remember, they’re playing Junior B, which is good, but when you start to compare those two players to Junior A goalies and when you start to compare them to Junior A players in the Midwest, then they do not have a chance. But then again, that’s just my opinion!

    But everyone can dream….

  25. Joke

Noticed the poll taking place when you first log onto the Blog. The Shulman family has been busy. THe only thing that shulman should win is letting his team down. Definitely #1 in that poll.

  26. Section 1 Fan

I agree 100% wih Joke. Shulman as the top player in the area NOW that’s a JOKE! What has he ever done? Willows has a track record, the older Shulman has a track record, but this Shulman is a QUITER!

  27. bigger

shulman should not even be on list. Part of being a player is leadership. courage , heart of which he has none of .

  28. Energy Plan

    relax, its a joke

come on..T. Boone Pickens has 8% of the vote and is virtually tied with Rob Fine

this is ridiculous….Rob Fine is no T. Boone Pickens!!!

  29. section 1

i see john jay as a sleeper pick, hunnington has a strong relationship with his captains family. john jay is going to need leadership in order to be a success in d II.

  30. fanotgame

Jay has had plenty of talent the last few years. There seemed to be a lack of focus by some of its more skilled players. They lost a lot of depth to graduation. Still, can’t really call the 3rd DII team that plays in League 1 a “sleeper”. They have been Sectional finalists or semi finalists the last 2 seasons. Should be in the mix again this year.

  31. tough times for Jay

In Division 2 they really have not beaten anyone. The got to the finals two years ago and got killed by Rye. Last year they were up and down at best. I`m not sure but I think they have only beaten Rye once or twice and they have never beaten Pelham. I think they benefit from being in league 1 and getting seeded automatically in the top 3 seeds. If they were in league 2 the last few years they would have probably finished behind some of the league 2 Division 2 teams. They always have talent but cannot figure how to beat the big boys yet. Maybe this year will be different

  32. mounties

Suffern will shock the world this year and win the section!!!!!!!! remember this post

  33. ???

How would suffern winning the section shock anybody? all they need (as it looks right now) is an incredibly mild upset over mamo. Mamo’s win last year was reasonably suprising because suffern was so good all year. But this years mamo team isn’t last years suffern team. And have you ever been on here before? Everyday some suffern or mamo person says they are winning section. Its only suprising if somebody else wins.
Win states, then i’ll be “shocked”

  34. fanotgame

I actually think White Plains (new to League 1) will be the DI sleeper. Not getting much press. But, even graduating a lot of talent, the Tigers will be a solid team. McCarrick/Altieri is a nice 1/2 punch at forward. Big, strong pretty fast skaters. I think Broderick is a solid young forward. They have two and maybe 3 very solid HS defensemen in McCandliss, McGee and maybe Klimchuck from RCDS. The issue is in goal. Need a solid tender to compete with the big boys who will take advantage of weakness there. Pavarini had some good games two seasons ago, but was inconsistent. If he has matured and becomes more consistent, White Plains will be a team neither Mamo or Suffern will want any part of in the playoffs.

  35. great possibility

that one of those 2 teams in suffern or mamk will win states this year.

  36. fanotgame

To tough times. I think you are right that Jay has had a tough time vs. Pelham the last few years. Two years ago, Jay finished higher in League 1 than Pelham, but lost both league games against the Pelicans. Last year, Pelham handled Jay in both league games. The Indians have fared better against the Garnets in the regular season the last 2 years, splitting two games last year (although the early season Jay win was the low water mark before Rye kicked it into gear). Two years ago, Jay easily beat Rye early and tied them late in the regular season. Rye found a way to get thru the Indians and win the Section those last 2 years.

  37. Beware of CNorth

Dont be surprised if CNorth upsets one of those two teams in the section finals. With Willows and Shulman back and a healthy Mcindoe they have a shot.

  38. my sleeper pick

    SCARSDALE

  39. high school

Its all matchups. Certain teams match up better against others. I think Pelham handles Jay because of the style of defensive play. Jay takes many penalties sometimes and teams like Pelham and Rye are usually very disciplined. Pelham it seems will never come out of what they are doing and run and gun, Rye did for a while in a few games and thats when Jay can catch you.

  40. fanotgame

High school- I agree with you. Pelham and Rye are definately “defense first” teams where the forwards need to play hard in the defensive zone if they want a shift. Lots of low scoring games. Last season’s 7-5 shootout win for Rye at Playland was an aberration. The tight 2-1 Sectional final is more typical of how those 2 teams play.

My sleeper pick- I heard Scarsdale may get a talent infusion from one of the local privates. Raiders coming home. If that is true, Scarsdale will have a nice season. Not necessarily causing problems to the DI big boys in Sectionals, but a solid League 2 season.

  41. high school

Pelham rarely airs it out or runs and guns and that keeps them in games and keeps them competitive against teams with more depth and talent. They thrive on the close wins and play strong in big games. Rye is the same type of team although I thought Rye had a better team last year going into the season. Mamaroneck plays more wide open hockey and can get away with it due to the bulk of talent and depth they have. That also can backfire as teams like Rye and Pelham who play tighter defensive games tend to give them fits.

  42. My Hockey Team

fanotgame – is RCDS hockey team falling apart? you mentioned a White Plains resident and now it seems you are referring to some Scarsdale resident(s)

  43. fanotgame

Not affiliated with RCDS. So don’t know that much about the inner workings of thier program. I am only reporting what I hear. The White Plains resident is a solid hockey defenseman, who I heard from several sources may not be returning to RCDS. I also hear he is a very good golfer who has stopped playing travel hockey. So, not sure if he will play HS hockey and if so, where. I only mentioned in a prior post that if what I hear is correct, the Tigers could get a nice addition to their team.

I don’t want to comment on the likelihood of the Scarsdale situation b/c I don’t have any info. Just rumor. I mentioned it in my post b/c I figured the person who posted the Raiders as a sleeper heard the same rumor I did and maybe had more info on it. Without an infusion of players, Scarsdale could have a tough time this season, as they graduated a whole bunch of kids off a team with an already short bench.

  44. the rumor

I have also heard the rumor about the 2 RCDS kids (1 of which is important) and why they left, but thats all i’m going to say ;)

  45. my sleeper pick

    me 2

  46. transfer again?

Odds are those who know the high school game can figure out who would be moving from RCDS to Scarsdale. That would make that player start in Scarsdale, transfer to Iona, then to RCDS, now back to Scarsdale? Does that make sense to anyone? None of those teams are Suffern or Mamaroneck or remotely contenders, seems really odd

  47. hockey

why is only one player important “the rumor”
    they are both good players
scarsdale should have a good team this year

  48. Scarsdale

I just checked Scarsdale’s roster from last season. On a team of 17 players, 9 were Seniors, including the 2 goalies on the team – which means they have only 8 returning players for this year. So unless Scarsdale has a big incoming Freshman class of skaters, I’m not sure if they will have enough skaters or even a goalie for a team?

  49. sleepers

my sleepers in division 1 would be NewRo or Scarsdale and in division 2 I think it will just be another Rye-Pelham final with someone winning 2-1 or 3-2 something like that. I can see NewRo or Scarsdale pulling a Q-Final upset possibly beating a L1 team like RTH Mahopac maybe if they have a great game Mamk or Suffern I would like to see a NewRo-WP rematch and I want to see one of these teams make a run to show how bad the Leagues are made up

  50. Travel Team

We are to quick to criticize kids, but not program administrators.

Going back to my original blogs on the lack of good coaching in section 1. We easily point out and ridicule the handful of players who transfer, looking for the right place to play, or don’t play for the schools they attend, as bad teammates.

I don’t get this. Look at how lousy some of these programs are run, not just the coaching, but the administrators ability to get kids on the ice.

If a school district is going to spend $50,000 a year in ice hockey costs, do not waste this money by hoping kids just show-up and try out. Make this a worthwhile investment. The coaches/AD’s have to know how many kids in the 4th grade are playing hockey. If it’s not enough, they better start working on the 1st through 3rd graders. Turn the young kids out and get them interested. The coaches should know their players well before they hit high school. I believe that their are a good number of coaches or AD’s who haven’t even seen their modified teams play.

The good programs are good for a reason, organization and planning. The underperforming and failing programs are that way because of a lack of this.

  51. im not sure

I have heard whispers of an RCDS to Scarsdale transfer as well

  52. Future Players ?????

Travel Team your right. The problem is your asking coaches or AD who don’t get paid a lot of money to ask travel organizations to make young kids into players. Then when the travel teams do that the high school repay them in later years. You know how by having HS teams play in illegal fall leagues, start off ice training in September and then play games instead of on weekday nights but during the weekend. This makes the good players created by travel teams have to choose between inferior HS and travel. HS wins due to blogs, crowds, news 12-newspaper coverage and school spirit in only a few cases.

Bottom line: They don’t have to bother cause they will just merge teams when all else fails.

  53. Travel Team

AD’s don’t do too bad salary-wise. Westchester/Rockland teachers do okay too, and if they coach 1 or 2 sports thats a nice stipend also, added to their pension. Not a bad vacation package either.

It’s part of their job, but the good ones make their programs better. Look what Tony DeMatteo has done with the Somers football program. It’s taken a couple of years, but it could be done with a hockey program also.

  54. LoHud Hockey

It doesn’t have to be a deal with the local travel programs. The coaches and/or the varsity players need to go into the elementary schools and visit with the younger kids, talking up hockey to them. That’s how the kids get interested. The Suffern varsity players are celebrities to the local kids, so them giving a 15-minute talk to these kids will have them all wanting to go out and play hockey. It’d be almost as if Derek Jeter walked into a local elementary school to get kids interested in baseball. How many of them would be out buying gloves & bats the next day? That’s why when the Suffern team hits the ice in home games, there’s always 20-30 little kids hanging out by the door they come in through waiting just to see them or pat them on the helmet as they walk by.

Also, Suffern & North Rockland (that I know of, but there may be more schools that do it) run “Learn to Skate” clinics for kids in their respective districts age 4 & up who are interested. They are free and all equipment is provided. This way the kids get on the ice at a young age to see if it is something thy like, and if so, the parents may enroll them in a house league or at least get them going to more clinics to learn how to skate.

  55. Well said travel team

Just ask the coaches at CN how they feel about administrative backing. Not just the hockey coaches, how about baseball, softball, basketball, and soccer – all these coaches, just to name a few, have been replaced since the new AD took over.

  56. Al Bundy/ formerly known as Travel Team

I am changing my name to dissuade the notion that I am a Travel Team enthusiast. My sons have played and enjoyed travel hockey but most of their best experiences are related to their HS hockey.

Welcome back LoHud. I agree and that is why Suffern and North Rockland have enjoyed recent success. While other schools are underperforming (The Clarkstowns) or failing (Nyack and TZ). All these schools have rinks in close proximity, local travel teams, and large enough segments in their school districts that can afford hockey.

CN is a particular good case study. Despite an incredible cluster of elite level players enetering the school in recent years, the “program” was never well organized or administered. When the elite player-run ended, last years results speak for themselves. This year may offer a one-year reprieve, but again the modified teams of recent years have barely cranked out players.

  57. suffern/cn

This is a perfect comparison Suffern has a great system in place where kids look up to the varsity players and want to learn to play this sport at a young age. They have a excellent coach who is at the rink making sure he has a good nucleus of young players always coming up.
CN has NO feeder program in place and it is amazing that they had such a good run of excellent teams with no interest level from the coaching staff or the AD in the development of young players. These players developed because of travel hockey.

  58. Al Bundy/ formerly known as Travel Team

I’m not trying to hammer CN here. I thought Coach Lynch was trying to make some in-roads into the elementary schools and hopefully the new staff will continue. But your right, it was ignored for a long time.

My point is that districts make large annual $$ expenditures on ice hockey programs each year, but do not follow-through to ensure the money is being spent wisely. If these were private schools, surely the programs would be eliminated to save tuition money.

Now a good hockey player comes along who dedicates many years (and dollars) getting to a high skill level. He decides not to play, or transfers, because AD’s or coaches have ignored the program. That kid should not be unduly criticized. He has done his work, the administrators have not.

  59. Don't make assumptions

now we are judging unfairly. The Suffern coach walked into program that was already developed and up and running. The man who started it, was the guy in charge of hockey operations at Sport O Rama. He pretty much had and has car blanch access to that rink when he needs it. Kudos to him for working hard to keep that machine running – they are the gold standard for a successful hockey program. CN has a rink that is poorly run. The man in charge of the travel program actually took his son off the team and then persuaded his younger son along with their friends not to play on the modified team. The former coaches tried to get involved with the rink but it was always a battle with little support from the management. Instead many players have been developed and introduced to hockey via the roller rink in C town. Clarkstown, especially North will start to see these kids arriving at the HS in the next 4-5 years.

But of course the only coach that cares about his program is from Suffern. Shame on everyone else for not having the pull in their local rink – oh that’s right, most teams have not had the benefit of having a rink in their backyard the last 30 years!

  60. OldSchool

CN had a coach for 25 years who did nothing to promote the program in the lower schools. He left at the right time and the new coach got the axe instead. The director at SOR tried for years to get him involved, he never even bothered to show up for the section meetings. You can’t blame the AD for that.

  61. fanotgame

If everyone heals, decides to return to HS play and ends up at the schools that they are rumored to be going to, here is my top 10 in three groups where ranking within the group is very close:

    Group One-

Mamo- Skating depth galore and a strong goalie. Don’t see many weaknesses.

Suffern- Not as much (utilized) depth as Mamo, a solid goaltender and the X factor player (Hiller). Also want revenge.

Iona- By far the best skaters. It really isn’t close. For you Suffern fans who may not know much about this team, they have 3 that play at or above the Hiller level and a whole bunch of others who are just a step below. Problem is that a bunch play a serious Jr travel schedule and they may not have experience in goal.

    Group Two-

Pelham- Very good senior class. From what I hear, improved goaltending. Would be in Group One except for the jr hockey conflicts for their top 2 D men.

White Plains- Three solid forwards and 3 solid D men makes for a pretty good HS team. Questions at goaltending, though.

Rye- Very good goaltending, a lock down Dman who can move the puck and real depth at forward. Not a bad equation.

    Group Three-

Fordham- Solid, if young, goaltending. Also a bunch of jr hockey players who if they focused more on the HS game, could really lift the level of Ram play.

North- How far can the McIndoe, Willows and Shuman show bring these Rams? I would be surprised if the two forwards approach the lofty scoring numbers of their super soph seasons, now that they are the main attraction without a lot of seasoned support. It will be fun to watch them try, though.

Stepinac- Lost the super goalie. Not sure of his replacement. Also lost some strong skaters. Still have a core of good skaters which can cause trouble.

RCDS- Yes, lost a lot of talent and depth. But, they can recruit, and do so. Also have ice every day of the week. May have a tough year in the league they play in, but they would still be competitive vs. a bunch of the top publics.

    Honorable mention-

New Ro- One of their go to guys is recovering from a head injury. If he plays, this team could be fun to watch. Even without him, a nice team.

Pac- A young team on the rise. Will be a tough out by the end of the season.

Scarsdale- If they get the third forward and goalie, an interesting team. A lot like the North situation. A few very good players who, to be successful, will need to lift the level of the other less experienced players around them.

  62. WHAT???

sorry but suffern will not be anything this year they have one good player thats hiller. defence will be terrible and without natoli they are nothing. their goalies have never played and will stink. Wait til you come to the jungle for and get beat again!!

  63. WHAT WHAT IN THE....

    to “WHAT???”

every year, people say suffern wont be anything this year because they lost such and such. and every year, other people, who didnt play much when such and such played, but are way more talented than you’d imagine but they don’t play because its not their turn, step in…and this repeats over and over again

OMG what will they ever do without justin daniels, drew daniels, anthony vertullo, jesse christiansen, andrew yorke, richie kastor….

enter tom natoli, chris wynne, zach salt, andrew ojeda, mike conklin, matt ruthberg, nick clark

omg what will they ever do without tom natoli, chris wynne, zach salt, andrew ojeda, mike conklin, matt ruthberg, nick clark…

enter zac hiller, johnny hill, norwin, maccarron, gabriel etc etc

  64. to Lohud Hockey

Those “learn to skate” clinics you speak of are North Rockland’s Varsity team practice lol

  65. Lohud Hockey

    I did some searching…
The two RCDS students are Jordan Gluck and Alex Klein
Scarsdale could be a contender? We will see

  66. Hockey

Not saying they will win the section but scardale just went from having no goalie to the best goalie in the section. You never know how far they can go.

  67. i dont know

From what i’ve heard, Gluck may be staying at RCDS

  68. Interested Fan

    Transfer Kids

  69. Interested Fan

    Transfer Kids

Why doesn’t everyone just leave these kids alone? They’ll be where they’ll be. I’m sure they have enough to worry about in a new school without worrying about what their neighbors think about their moves.

  70. wrong

you are wrong the other kid is not Alex Klein you should get your facts straight before you assume

  71. You are wrong.

    yea it is..

  72. Section 1 Fan

Tell Gluck to stay at RCD, not needed at Scarsdale.

  73. Hockey 101

Gluck is exactly what Scarsdale needs

  74. Hockey

You have to be crazy, why would scarsdale not need Gluck? He will now be the best goalie in section 1.

  75. Lohud Hockey

    yes it is
alex klein is one of the students from rcds who transfered back to scarsdale
    i would know

  76. TigerVet2

The financial situation of a family can change. There is no blaming the kids for leaving RCDS. Their names should be kept off this blog.

  77. Huh?

Who the hell is Alex Klein?

  78. rumors

if the rumors i’ve heard are true, it was not a family situation or a personal choice.

  79. LoHud Hockey

Why do people find it necessary to use the screen names that others on this blog have pretty much laid claim to?

I know nothing of kids transferring into Scarsdale, yet someone on the blog has decided to use my screen name to start arguments about who is transferring, and the merits of doing so.

  80. transfer again?

Gluck would help Scarsdale, but in my opinion he`d be maybe the third or fourth best goalie in the Section. Will help Scarsdale bigtime

  81. RCDS move

apparently plans have changed since goalie spotted in rcds today – can’t trust rumors

  82. Hockey

    transfer again?
entertain me and tell me the goalies you think are better than gluck, it really is not close, and if you say glaser, then why did glaser get cut the first day of empires while gluck was the top goalie on the team?

  83. sure

Glaser, Macindoo, are better and he is on a par with Parra, Delverne, Funei at New Rochelle.
Please, everybody knows you cannot go by Empire tryouts. Many times you could put together a better team from the guys who did not make it

  84. Upper Left

It seems everybody has written off RTH and I think that happens every year. I think we can point to that program and the player and skill development that has developed with a well coached program. White Plains has also developed due to some good coaching.

  85. to sure

I agree with you, but i got to ask what is with the spelling? Macindoo and Delverne are close, and i’m not really sure how the last guys name is spelled but i know that isn’t close. But how many of these goalies were even invited to Empires. In Gluck’s defence he did play very well and was not a bust, but who’s to say none of these guys wouldn’t have done well either. That fact that Gluck made the team shouldn’t be held against him, but it also doesn’t make him the best.

  86. Empire Member

They might have done as well but not better. He led the 12 State goalies with 96% save %.

  87. sure

Not saying anything bad about Gluck. Heres my visual of it. Claiming someone is better because they made the Empire team is wrong. Who decided that the Empires were the gold standard for hockey in the area? A tryout is a tryout and it is the coaches discretion. Some of the top players in the area did not tryout. Some did try out and did not make it. Playing Empires does not make you the best players.
More times than not those tryouts have been skewed and they cut quality players all the time. To make him the best in the section based on that is not fair. There are some real good keepers in Section 1 and while he would be good also he would not be the best.

  88. look at the talent

I am fairly certain we all could come up with a team on paper of course, that could be as good as the empire team was this year with players who either were cut or did not tryout

  89. Actually

Of the kids that were cut, or did not try out for empires you would have a much better team. A few that come to mind are, in no apparent order, Regan, Natoli, Eck, King, Salt, Ojeda, Hill, Glaser, Ruthberg, Willows…Ya da Ya da Ya da.

  90. Player

I have played in games with Gluck, Mcindoe, Glaser and Delavergne. Gluck is the best and the only one close is Mcindoe who tore his ACL and will not be at his best.

  91. Player 2

I have played in games with all the other goalies, and they are the best! :)

  92. Player

ok but have you played against Gluck

  93. hockey

    rye over pelham 8-0
    scarsdale over pelham 7-4
    (fall league games)
    comments?

  94. FALL LEAGUE

    DID PELHAM USE JV TEAM?

  95. hockey

    no…
clearly scarsdale and rye will be good teams this year

  96. Who Cares????

The comment is who cares. Isn’t it illegal for teams to start playing now and many wonder why coaches would take a chance. Whatever coach forces his good players to show wins. I guess Pelham had the least upper classmen show up and so there are the poor scores. Meanwhile some poor freshmen is fooled into thinking this will help them get ice time during the regular season.

    Bogus all around.

This stuff about Gluck? Unless this is his father or himself writing it what is the purpose? The kid is one of 10 good goalies around. If any of them want to get some place rathe than change crappy HS just go try out in Canadian for a legit Junior team or go to the USHL tryouts in June.

  97. fall

    its not illegal haha
    its fall league
and gluck is back at rcds not scarsdale
and no pelham did not just show up with freshman
scarsdale and rye are just better teams

  98. sec 1 hockey

    Acually,
the players on your list are all good, but some of them were too old to try out also Hill sould not be on that list he is not one of the top players in the section

  99. double standard?

So its ok for kids to play travel from September through April but if high school players want to try to get ready for the high school season its stupid? Its not illegal for the high school players to get together and play or skate. It probably helps the teams who want to work on things or get lines set. I am sure Rye has many new players coming to varsity and maybe these pre season games give coach a chance to evaluate what he has. I follow Rye and I think it helps the team get going and start the season fresh. I am sure each coach and team have different reasons for doing it. I would not put any stock into wins and losses for this though.

  100. rock the vote

Regan, Natoli, Eck, King, Salt, Ojeda, Hill, Glaser, Ruthberg, Willows

of these: returning players would have been Regan, Natoli, Eck, King, Salt but they elected not to play

  101. What?

Ojeda tried out and got cut..

  102. What?

    Oh, and so did Glaser.

  103. fluke?

    Scarsdale 5 : Rye 4

  104. fanotgame

Lets get some perspective on fall hockey. For a team like Rye that might have 35 kids try out for the varsity this year, the coach gets to see some of the inexperinced kids in a lower level scimmage setting. I saw the games this weekend. Rye had a huge bench, full of kids who will not make the varsity roster. The coach was rolling 4 lines, so the experinced kids were barely out on the ice together. A few of the newcomers might make the team, but likley see limited ice time. The top 2 goalies for Rye are not participating. 3 of Rye’s top 4 forwards (one that plays at the Olivario level and 2 that play at the Felix level) were not there. Another one of the forwards drove straight to the Ice Hutch after a hard fought U18AA travel game at Ice Time. How much gas in the tank do you think he had left for a fall game? Its a time for the kids who have friends on varsity to play with them in a fun setting. Extrapolating regular season success from a fall league game is an inexact science, at best. Even the most optimistic Garnet fan doesn’t think the 8-0 Rye win over Pelham means anything. I am happy to see the Scarsdale program on the rise. Other bloggers mentioned that with losses thru graduation, the Raiders might have a tough time fielding a competitve team. They looked just fine last nite. A solid league 2 team.

  105. Scarsdale

Very true yet the Scarsdale team was rolling all four lines too. And i understand Mundinger came from an 18Uaa game but Oliverio and Kline had both had games that day also before the game. It just shows that both clubs will be strong this year. Should be interesting.

  106. Tough Year

In my opinion, Rye is going to have a VERY long season. Has a good goalie but “NO” scorers.

  107. Garnets

Rye will score plenty of goals don’t worry, you will see when the season starts.

  108. Rye

You clearly do not know Rye’s team well enough if you think they have no scorers.

  109. just the facts

Only 22 returning players with 5 or more goals scored playing a league 1 schedule last year:
    1. Flory-25
    2. Hiller- 21
    2. Perelle- 21
    4. Mundinger- 19
    5. Urban- 18
    6. Emerson- 17
    7. Fine- 16
    7. Mastracola-16
    9. Rofofsky-14
    10.Glaser-13
    10.Beber-13
    12. Greenburg- 12
    13. Gyscek-9
    13. Hill- 9
    15. Hagen- 7
    15. Naclerio- 7
    17. Marr- 6
    17. Darland-6
    17. Jackson- 6
    17. Duffy- 6
    21. Dzenis-5
    21. Katsuta-5

That means Mamaroneck has 7 such players, Pelham 4, Rye 3, Mahopac 3, John Jay 2, Suffern 2 and Rye Town 1.

Not that many League 1 returning goal scorers.

  110. just the facts

If you want to make the cutoff at 10 goals, then you only have 12 such players with Pelham, Mamaroneck, John Jay, Rye and Mahopac each with 2 and Suffern and Rye Town with 1 each.

Any way you slice it, a lot of new scorers will emerge in this coming season.

  111. just the facts

now make that list with assist and it is probably the same

  112. fanotgame

    To tough year-
Understand your concern regarding Garnet goal scoring with them losing Eck, Rogers and Wenzel. Pretty darn good trio. But, all good teams lose good players every year. That is why they were good teams in the first place. The above list does show there is potential for Rye, though. Lets see how these new leaders do now that they get their chance at the power play and top line shifts. They can skate and shoot just fine. It will be interesting to see if one or more of the Garnet scorers can do it at crunch time like Eck did time after time.
