10 key matchups

September
25

The Section 1 league schedule has been posted (here is the link), along with a few non-league games. Of the games that are listed, here are 10 series that I’m really looking forward to.

Suffern-Mamaroneck (Jan. 10 at Hommocks, Feb. 20 at Sport-O): The teams switch roles this year, with Mamaroneck now the favorite and defending champion. We can only hope that it produces as much drama and blog comments as last time. The game at Sport-O is the last League 1 game of the season and could decide the championship.

Rye-Pelham (Jan. 13 at Ice Hutch, Feb. 11 at Playland): Another sectional championship rematch, and a series that produced a lot of excitement last season. Both teams pride themselves on defense, and with the players they have, scoring against them should be even more difficult this year.

Mamaroneck-Pelham (Dec. 23 at Ice Hutch, Jan. 24 at Hommocks): If any team can break the Mamaroneck-Suffern lock on League 1 it could be this Pelham team, which is stocked with experienced talent. This is always a spirited rivalry, and features the two winningest active coaches in Section 1.

White Plains-Rye Town/Harrison (Dec. 11 at Ebersole, Jan. 26 at Playland): The newest addition to League 1 plays the team that made the jump last year. They both lost some great players, so the Dec game will be a good chance to see where they stand.

Mahopac-John Jay (Jan. 4 and Jan. 30 at Brewster): Both teams struggled last year because of injuries (Pac) or instability (Jay). I think they’ll both bounce back, but how high will they go? Enough to threaten Mamaroneck-Suffern in DI or Pelham-Rye in DII?

Brewster-Clarkstown North (Nov. 28): I just want to see who shows up to the Rams’ first game. Incidentally, North won’t play Suffern this season (Schelling told me the Mounties schedule was full), but they will play League 1 RTH (Dec. 6) and White Plains (Jan. 22), and Section 9 power Monroe-Woodbury on Feb. 8.

North Rockland-E/T/B (Dec. 20 at Sport-O, Feb. 13 at Ice Hutch): It will be interesting to see who the two teams who moved up from League 3 fare in their new surroundings. Both programs beat League 2 teams in the first round of the playoffs last year (NRock over Mt. P, E/T/B over Scarsdale).

New Rochelle-Scarsdale (Dec. 2 at Ice Hutch): New Rochelle has some of the most exciting young talent in the area, and this is an interesting test against a League 2 team. Another one comes Jan. 23 against E/T/B. On a side note, it looks like New Ro is playing all its home dates at the Ice Hutch, with six games of its nine posted games on Friday night at 6 or 8.

Yorktown-Brewster (Dec. 13 and Jan. 23 at Brewster): After Yorktown won twice by one goal in the regular season, these teams staged a thrilling double-OT quarterfinal in sectionals, with Yorktown winning again.

Kennedy/Putnam Valley-Sleepy Hollow/Irvington (Dec. 21 at Sport-O, Feb. 13 at Brewster). League 4 is always tough to figure out, but I feel like these teams could decide the championship. Both teams were strong last year (KPV was 13-3 in league and SHI won a playoff game) and return a lot. Of course Pearl River will also be in the mix, and the new Nyack/TZ merged team is also a wild card.

(update 9:30 p.m.): I talked to SHI coach (cx: Howie) Weiner and he confirmed that SHI is playing out of Sport-O this year. Long story short, the ice is $150/hr cheaper than WSA).

How do you think they’ll turn out? And what do you think I’m missing?

  1. Section 1 Fan

    Harold,

Thank you for getting rid of that Football Blog on the Hockey Blog!

  2. CN-Suffern

HOW CAN NORTH NOT PLAY SUFFERN!?!? No matter how far apart these teams are, this is and has always been a rivalry, and the game will be ALOT more competitive this year. SO they’re not in the same league anymore, they should still have one game scheduled to keep the rivalry going!!!

    thoughts?

  3. LoHud Hockey

I wouldn’t say CN/Suffern has always been a rivalry. It has for the last probably 8 years. It started when North got real good and ended when they were no longer real good. It’s not like a North/South thing where no matter how far apart they are in level of play they always play each other and draw a crowd.

Also, Harold, unless SHI changed coaches to some guy who coincidentally has the same last name as the old coach, the head coach is Howie Wiener, not Ethan Wiener.

  4. mimi

    Always a good one –

    The traditional Friday-after-Thanksgiving-game

    Iona-Fordham, 5:15, Playland

  5. Harold Gutmann

I’m definitely looking forward to Iona-Fordham and Iona-Stepinac, and whatever Section 1 team RCDS is playing, along with the annual local tournaments (Mamaroneck, Pelham, Fox Lane, Scarsdale, Nyack, etc.). Hopefully when we get closer I can update the list with all these dates. There’s a note on the CHSHL site that the schedules will be released around Oct. 7.

  6. Harold Gutmann

Thanks Lohud (though now it’s my turn to correct you—the last name is spelled Weiner).

  7. LoHud Hockey

What happened to I before E except after C????

  8. Suffern Hockey all day everyday

Suffern beats Mamk each time they play them. Close games each time but Jackson and Fine are no match for Hiller and Hill. Even Glaser doesn’t stand a chance. Five Hole all day

  9. Hockey

Hiller is better than jackson and fine but hill is worse than both of them

  10. My Hockey Team

    Modica will lay out Jackson

  11. CN administration

For all those that were looking forward seeing this years much improved CN team take on the League 1 powers such as Suffern, Mamo,Pelham… You can thank the AD for being incompetent and clueless and placing the team in L2. The coaches, present and former, wanted to be in L1 but of course the AD went with what a small percentage of parents wanted. And you wonder why the athletic dept at CN is as pathetic as it is.

  12. LoHud Hockey

I don’t think the administration & parents had much of anything to do with it. They put new rules in place that have teams switching leagues based on the previous season’s standings. So the top team in League 2 (WP) swapped with the bottom team in League 1 (CN), The top 2 teams in League 2 (North Rockland & ETB) swapped with the bottom team in League 2 (FL), and the top team in league 4 (NewRo) moved up to league 3.

The reason for two L3 teams going to L2 while only one L2 team went to L3 and one L4 team going to L3 while no L3 teams dropped to L4 is to balance out the number of teams in each league (We now have 8 in L1 and 7 apiece in L2, L3, & L4 as opposed to last year where it was 8-6-7-9). In future years, I would imagine it will be a pretty standard thing. The bottom team moves down a league and the top team moves up a league.

  13. really?

no mention about the RTH/Rye rivalry games?

  14. RCDS

This year RCDS will be playing Mamaroneck, Rye, and Pelham

  15. ..

    http://www.ryecountryday.org/page.cfm?p=334&show=team&teamID=40

  16. TO RCDS

Not sure about RCDS playing Mamaroneck and Rye, but the Pelham one is a scrimmage not a game.

  17. nice web site

    Nice website to RCDS
Looks to me like the toughest game on their schedule is Brunswick and Mamaroneck

  18. What?

Brunswick and MAmaroneck their toughest game?? WHat about Berwick, Vermont Academy, North Yarmouth…not many people around here know about those teams…but they are much better than Mamaroneck

  19. corrections

    First to LoHud Hockey,
Lakeland\panas moved down to L4 and Somers also moved up to L3. Your math still works out but just incase anybody was wondering.
    And CN administration,
I dont think the AD has any say on League positions (but i’m not positive about that). And i dont think they base their desicions on this blog and rumors about willows coming back or not. Plenty of other teams are badly out of place too (good and bad).
I also heard the JFK goalie is now going to Pawling (JFK is a catholic school so i can see how). If thats true, SHI should run away with L4 assuming Halpin and Pesce dont have conflicts with travel. I feel that also would make Pawling a contender for L3. But if somebody could confirm that for me it would make me feel better.

  20. mimi

RCDS continuing the Iona-RCDS game, should be a good one this year…

Wednesday, December 17, at RCDS, 4:30

  21. to mimi

no it wont- RCDS lost about 7 Varsity players from last years team…
    iona will walk over rcds

  22. be real

those teams Berwick, Vermont Yarnouth, are low end prep the lowest. They are weak teams compared to most prep schools. Mamaroneck could handle those teams.
Last year did RCDS play those preps competitively? If so any section 1 quality team would do the same. Did RCDS beat Mamaroneck last year?

  23. not real

be real… mamaroneck could not play against a prep school team RCDS barely plays in the NEPSHA. Think about the players from section 1 that have gone to prep school

  24. hockey

when does the player to watch list come out

  25. to be real

You obviously dont know much about prep school hockey, im not blaming you its just a fact…not many people around here do..but most teams in RCDS league would walk over section 1 teams. When RCDS plays section1 teams they only play for pride.

  26. fanotgame

Good to see RCDS playing a bunch of the local publics and Iona. It will give all us bloggers better perspective on how they matchup against the public and local CHSHL teams. Also glad to see the goalie stayed. He should keep them in those games vs. the tougher prep teams.

  27. fanotgame

Took a closer look at RCDS schedule. Why is Rye scheduled to play them on 2/20? Isn’t that in the middle of Sectional playoffs, or are Sectional playoffs no longer the week of Feb break?

  28. LoHud Hockey

2/20 is a Friday, and that weekend is the last weekend of the regular season. The playoffs start on the Monday right after that (2/23). So that’s probably Rye’s last game of the season that they will use as a non-league tune-up for the playoffs (Similar to what Suffern has been doing the last few years with Monroe-Woodbury the last week of the season).

Also, I don’t know how much stock we will be able to put into the RCDS comparisons to the Section 1 teams based on their schedule. The Mamroneck & Pelham games are scrimmages and the Rye game will be a non-league game for Rye a couple of days before the playoffs, so they may just be treating it as a tune-up and/or a chance to rest their top guys and get some ice time for the guys at the end of the bench(although I’m not saying that is definitely how they would view it). The only other games against Section 1 opponents on their schedule mid-season are vs. CN & JJ, who are not really at the top of league 1 (which is what a lot of the RCDS supporters on here tend to compare them to). If they pull out close games against Jay & North, then we will know that they would probably fit in at the middle to bototm of League 1. If they blow the two away, all it will do is spark debate over where they would slot into the standings compared to Suffern, Mamk, Pelham, etc.

  29. iona

iona has no (good) goalie without one all the games will not be that enjoyable

  30. too much PR

To much PR work done here by the RCDS PR machine. They have never beatan Mamaroneck or Suffern correct? They can recruit, have theri own rink, and a really nice campus right? They should be leaps and bounds better than and public school team and they are not. Way too much time spent on a team who obviously has never made a playoff appearance, and obviously is always searching for respect, approval, and accolades from the public school teams.

  31. Al Bundy

I disagree…it must be really hard to recruit to a school that is expensive and surrounded by high quality public schools, education wise. And if those publics happen to have respectable hockey programs, i.e., Pelham, Mamaroneck, Rye, it’s less likely the very good player would go to RCDS out of those districts. I’m sure the number of scholarships RCDS can offer must be limited. It’s also not a traditional “prep” boarding school on the New England tradition.

I see more disadvantage to fielding a quality team than advantages.

  32. lets get it started

Who does everyone think will make the player to watch list? lets hear

  33. fanotgame

I think the JN usually picks 5 players. Not necesarily who they think are the top 5 players in the area, but often players who the JN believes will have breakout years on a playoff caliber team, respond to a particular adversity or are particularly intruiging. Will probably stay away from the kids who are playing serious jr hockey at the expense of their participation at the HS level. With that in mind, I think they go with:

    1. Willows- He is the most intriguing story, right? Can he come back into the league, put North on his back and get them deep in the DI playoffs? Not an easy task, as coming out of L2, even if they win that league, they play someone like New Ro in the opening round then someone like WP in the quarters before Suffern or Mamo in the semis. That is about as hard as it gets.

    2. McIndoe- Can he return to all state form after a knee injury?

    3. Prunesti- Can New Ro be a playoff contender? If so, it will need to rely heavily on this younster’s firepower.

    4. Urban- Can the speedy senior who had his super junior season cut short by injury just before playoffs, keep RTH competitive without the support of his now graduated linemates?

    5. Sganga- need a Dman on the list. This guy is poised for a super senior year. Doesn’t score much, but will lead the Garnet’s “Defense First” mantra with strong skating and hard hits.

No need to put Suffern or Mamo’s top guys on the list. Their play is already known to the hockey public. Maybe the new Suffern goalie becomes an intruiging pick, replacing Natoli on the gold standard team. Have heard some chatter about Hill who is presumably skating with Hiller. He is bound to rack up some points there. Mamo does it with a whole bunch of players who are to some extent interchangeable and all very solid. Once you get past Hagen and Glaser, hard to single out anyone specifically over the others. Maybe talk about the need for Jackson (coming back from his own ACL issues_)to replace Conner’s numbers. But, I think that will be more of a Tiger team effort.

  34. let me get this straight

if what you are saying is true fanotgame by how the JN chooses the players, players like Jackson, Fine, Hiller, and Hill do not deserve individual publicity because they play for a great program? I think thats a little rediculous and think that they should be the one’s on the list because they make their team as good as it is.

  35. fanotgame

Didn’t mean to offend Mamo and Suffern’s finest. Sure those two teams have their top players who are very, very good. “Players of the year” seem to come from those two programs with great regularity. They do benefit from a strong supporting cast, as both the Mounties and Tigers are always very deep. The top names at those two schools will likely be at the top of the scoring lists at the end of the season. My list contains players who will have to do it more on their own. Put teams on their back and carry them or take a particular leadership role in certain aspects of the game, as opposed to simply perform at a high level with a solid supporting cast. I did say that my list (and the ones I have seen JN compile in the past) is not necessarily a list of the tippy top players. I think Harold stated in a post last season that the “players to watch” are not necessarily the projected “best” players in the section.

  36. sec 1 hockey

    let me get this straight,
Hiller sould probably be on the list because he is the second best player behind willows but all the other players you listed are not as good as the players on fanothegame’s list, especially Hill. I have nothing against him but I don’t think he is even close to one of the top players in the section. He is a solid player that any high school team would want to have but he is by no means dominant or a major impact player. I have seen him play and I am not impressed.

  37. Al Bundy

To bad CN won’t be playing League 1 this year. No Sufferm, Mamaroneck or Pelham on the schedule, only White Plains. That could hurt them come playoff time. Is CN doing any upstate tournaments? They should try to get some tougher competition before playoffs.

Their best competition in league 2 will be ETB and North Rockland. They also have Monre-Woodbury twice. Anyone know how good they are this year?

  38. My Thoughts

Should be an interesting year. Here are my thoughts on some of the top teams.

Mamaroneck – always have great depth. Very good goaltending, solid forwards and a many good defensemen. The real question is: How much will their offense miss Conner?

Suffern – always a powerhouse, and this year should be no different, just with a different bunch of players taking on key roles. With the Senior class of ‘08 now moved on, there are plenty of opportunities for other players to step up. Hiller and Hill will provide the most points, while others like Jaeger, Modica, Goetz, etc. will have to step up as well. The starting defense is solid in Norwin and McCarron, but they will have to sort out the 2nd line D, as well as the goaltending situation

Pelham – strong core of Seniors should put this team back in the D2 title game

Rye – solid goaltending, can others step up to fill Eck and Rogers’ place?

White Plains – how will they respond to losing their 2 stars?

CN – most interesting storyline. How far can the super Seniors Willows, Shuman and McIndoe carry this team on their backs? Willows can probably score a hat trick against any goalie and McIndoe can probably make 40 saves against any team. This is a team you don’t want to run into in the playoffs if you are a Suffern or Mamo. The underclassmen on this team took their bumps in L1 last year, but a drop down to League 2, coupled with the fact that they are a year older and bigger, should do them fine.

ETB – we know they can score, but what about the goaltending?

North Rockland – similar to CN in that they will rely heavily on 2 skaters – O’Conner and Meany, and their goalie, who had a good year last year.

  39. Here We GO

the only matchup i want to see is Willows VS Hiller. By far top two players in the section and honestly can say mamaroneck stands no chance against either of these two. The supporting cast in Hill and Shuman for the two above are quite similiar and will be a major help. Going to be one hell of a matchup in the section final game. yes i said it. North plays Suffern in the Section 1 finals.

  40. My Hockey Team

I hear Monroe Woodbury is weaker than they have been in a long time, lost a lot of talent and it only will get worse for the next few years. My source are from Father’s who know the program and live in the area. Their kids do not play for MW but play against them.

  41. fanotgame

    To Here we GO-
That would be a heck of a story. As I said in an earlier post, North would need quite a run to get to finals. Coming out of L2, the road to the finals might need to go thru the likes of New Ro, then WP and then Suffern or Mamo. WP looks like a 3 seed. The highest seed North can get is a 6. The highest seed New Ro can get is 11 (unless some DI L2 teams don’t make playoffs- unlikely). Do the bracket. Tough. Fun to watch them try. But tough.

  42. Agree

“Here We Go” – I agree with you. CN’s Willows/Shuman/McIndoe vs. Suffern’s Hiller/Hill/Depth would be a great matchup. And you’re right, no other team has a player as important to the team as Willows is to CN and Hiller is to Suffern.

CN’s first line and goalie can stack up, or, may be even better, than any other first line and goalie combo in the league. The key for CN will be to develop a 2nd line that can be competitive while the 1st line rests (and believe me, the 1st line won’t rest much) and can score against League 2 teams.

  43. Harold Gutmann

    Re: “Players to Watch”
The list will come out along with the rest of the hockey preview, which is sometime in late November.
There will be five players in each of our zones (Rockland, Southern Westchester, Central Westchester, Northern Westchester/Putnam), for a total of 20. Fanotgame is right that we don’t just list the top players (otherwise it would be called “top players” and not “players to watch”). Like the MVP voting, there’s really no formula to it, obviously you have to be talented but it’s also a list of influential/intriguing/exciting players, with an eye on including different positions and teams.
For the first time, I will also consider your poll votes, so T. Boone Pickens and Tess Brogan will probably be represented. But seriously, I’ll open it up for nominations as we get closer, though you can certainly weigh in now if you want.

  44. Al Bundy

What of last years sophomore class are candidates for CN’s second line and the 3rd spot on the Willows line?

  45. Energy Plan

    T. Boone Pickens built and energy independent robot to play goal for the Mounties

  46. mimi

    Pro update

Tom Collingham (Iona Prep/Rye Country Day/U. of Vermont product) just signed with ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers (affiliate of Pittsburgh Penguins)

  47. CN

My guess is that Kapnick will most likely be on the first line with Willows and Shuman. When he was a Freshman he was on the 2nd line and did pretty well.

  48. My Hockey Team

fanotgame – thoughts on your 5 southern westchester players?

  49. fanotgame

    To My Hockey team-

Southern Westchester has the most teams by far. Depending on where the South/Central cutoff is, at least 12 of the 34 teams if you include the local privates reside in the Southern region. 5 of the 8 League One teams are from the region. A bunch of the teams are regularly in the DI, DII and CHSHL playoff finals. A long way of saying there are a lot of worthy candidates. I will list the most interesting questions, from my admittedly Rye biased perspective. The players involved in answering those questions would be considered for my “player to watch” list:

    1. Who will replace the Sigona/Rui points for WP?
    2. Who will lead the Rye “Defense First” charge- I already mentioned Sganga. Also, who will lead the Rye offense now that all staters Eck and Rogers have graduated?
    3. Does Pelham have the goaltending to compete with the big boys?
    4. Who will replace Connor’s points for Mamo?
    5. Will RTH be able to keep pace in LI- I already mentioned Urban?
    6. Is New Ro a DI contender?- I already mentioned Prunesti.
    7. Can the RCDS goaltender keep them in games?
    8. We know they have some super skaters, but who is between the pipes for Iona?

  50. My Hockey Team

fanotgame – haven’t you ever been told dont answer a question with a question(s).

  51. Who Cares

Just went on the New York Bobcats Junior Web site. Does anyone know if Natoli is hurt? or did he leave the Bobcats?

  52. just to mention

    who cares,
At the Hitmen showcase both reagen and natoli were there however both games I saw regaen played. Applecore, where Rui plays played the bobcats and dominated them 5-0. Rui scored twice against Reagen. Bobcats are looking pretty weak this year compared to their past few seasons they had excellant teams.

  53. NHL MAN

Who is going to be playing with urban this year and do they have any depth

  54. sec1 fan

    Fanotgame,
Gavin Lambdin is the answer to question #3.

  55. sec1 fan

    Fanotgame-

    #3- Gavin Lamdin

  56. WESTCHEST

how come no teams out there have nice websites that i know of?...are there any teams with websited to visit?

  57. Nobody in the middle

Playing with Urban on left wing, right wing, def and goalie will be Bugs Bunny.

I am sure they will figure it out. RTH seems to always figure out a system and style of play that works and comes to compete every year.

  58. fanotgame

That’s what I am talking about Sec1 Fan. Intrigue. Us Garnet followers and players know what the Pelham skaters are all about. Its the new guy between the pipes that piques our interest. Can he be a top notch goalie, or is this a repeat of the “kid from Colorado” on Suffern’s team last year. Or somewhere in between. Interesting question to be answered during the season.

  59. Observer

Pelham’s Gavin Lambdin is small and has always been an average goalie. In fact in Pelham youth hockey he was always the back up. Yes Pelham’s problem will once again be in goal.

  60. Westchester Hockey

    Observer

With that information, it is strange that he became a starter at a New England Div 1 prep school’s JV team?

  61. bad scouting obsever

    Observer,
The kid you are mentioning and I think mentioning his name is wrong is at least 6 ft tall. So I am sure you have not seen him in a while. When he played youth hockey in Pelham it was at least 5 years ago and he was not a backup player to the other 5 goalies on Pelhams roster. Pelham also has other options this season too. Speaking as a supporter of a major rival of Pelham I know something about the team as the team I follow plays them in many important games. They still have superior defense and wings who play superior defense that will as it always had take huge pressure off whoever plays goal for them. They have done quite well the last few years with weak goalies, most notebly last season when they lost to the team I root for in last years final. They will be fine.

  62. CN Depth

Rumor last year was Kapnick was done with hockey. I think he actually was healed and cleared last year and did not come back to a team that desperately needed him. As far as the rest of the team if they can play solid defensive hockey and McIndoe can save 9/10 they should be a very dangerous team. Don’t forget about Spencer Cohen who might have been CN’s best all sound player last year. All those young players last year that got tons of experience playing against the elite section 1 teams will only get better (if the put in the work over the spring/summer).

I agree that being in L2 will only hurt this team – they will be the favorite in every League game they play this year and most of the athletes are not use to that pressure. Plus come playoff time they will not get as high a seed as they deserve (if they play as good as everyone is hyping them up to be). It’s too bad since they were finally allowed to play home games at the mall – shame on the AD for this.

It will be interesting to see how the new egos mesh with the role players from last years team.

And finally a new coach who will have to put this all together and make it work. Should be a fascinating season!

  63. Canterbury

The prep school he played for is not a top of the line D1 prep team like Kent or Salisbury. Those schools JV teams are about the same as midget AA. I know Canturbery varsity is still better then RCDS and their division. I dont know anything about this kid so i cant comment on him, but dont put too much weight on starting on that JV team

  64. raider rooter

I do nt think anyone was putting weight on the kid but after what was there before its must better situation for that team. Anytime a team picks up a veteran keeper its got to help. The level he played has to help

  65. Just Wondering

Just looking through rosters of teams where kids were suppose to be dressing for their school didn’t notice M.Conklin from Suffern on Suny Canton roster, did he not make the team or what.
Curious because on the Suffern web page it said he would be dressing.

  66. CN

“CN Depth” – if Kapnick isn’t playing, then it will defintely be Cohen on the first line with Willows and Shuman.

  67. Canton roster

    M. Conklin is on the B team. R. Willows and K. Moro from C North are on the A team that plays in ACHA Div. 1. There supposedly was about 50-60 kids trying out.

  68. Just Wondering

I not sure Canton realizes the comp they will be going up against after being a Independent(and not winning much) and now moving up to D1 Club(FIRST YR),do they honestly think they can win games, looking at the schedule its pretty tough.

  69. Canton

First of all, Canton was not an independent team. They were in the NJCAA for years. Last year, they had a new coach who was from an ACHA team and a new bunch of kids who exceeded expectations and made it to the quarterfinals of the NJCAA championship and also beat ACHA teams in Div. 1 like Oswego State, Univ. of Rochester and Niagara University. So it seems with more fire power on the team this year they will be competitive in D1 Club.

  70. Just wondering

    Canton
Thats my point, if look at the teams they played in the past (not what you call power house teams)and look at who they will be playing this yr it will be a big difference
As far as the NJCAA come on ,just look at the teams not much there no matter what you consider comp.hockey.

  71. Canton

What’s your point – First of all, don’t put down the players on the NJCAA teams—many go on to continue playing hockey on club teams and if you have ever watched a game you will see that it is competitive hockey. Second, Canton has played teams in D1 last year and beat them with only freshmen and sophs on their team—they beat Scranton (D1) 7-2 last night – sure they might not be a strong team this year but they will only get better over the years. If those teams in D1 they beat last year are weak teams, then what are they doing there? Scranton is a weak D1 team—so what are they doing there? If you’re a section 1 fan, with two former sec. 1 players on the team, why don’t you just route them on?

Harold, How come you make little to no mention of the Somers/NS team which moved up from league four to league three?

  73. Gary

All due respect whats the big deal of Somers/Ns moving up? Many teams move up or down. Further its not like they are moving to League 1, that would be news. Or even league 2. League 3 and 4 are still not as strong as the other two. Although Somers had a good year last season. If you want your team to “make news” either beat some quality teams or play with the big boys.

S/NS Beat Byram Hills and Lakeland last year both league 3 teams and skated with League 1 Pelham the entire playoff game. In my opinion its a big deal how the team never had a lot of success in the past shoots up this one year. Maybe it isn’t huge news but i think its worth a mention especially with the young talent (Maracso, Aruilio, Bassin)

  75. BH?

Byram Hills won what 4 games last year? Marasco is good but hes not young I think he is a senior? As far as the sectional game with Pelham I recall the score being 6-3? and Pelham had a huge edge in shots something like 37 to 15? Besides are we tipping our hats and making a huge deal about another two school merged team becoming competitive? Shouldn`t they be? Two schools and in an area that has strong youth hockey programs in Brewster? They should be good by now.

  76. cdf

Yes he’s a senior, it’s just nice to have the focus on some other teams who show improvement rather than league 1 teams

  77. Food For Thought

    What about John Jay?

Rofosky and Greenberg are solid skaters
alex wohl and louis ricci are back on D to cause havoc infront of the crease.

  78. HS player

It is true….JFK’s goaile, Mike DeLaVergne has moved back to the Pawling Schools. He will be playing hockey and bringing up the level of competition Pawling will offer. Also, JFK has picked up new players as well.
