Two weeks until practice

It doesn’t seem like school started too long ago, but there’s only two weeks left until Nov. 3, the first day of practice.
It couldn’t come soon enough for me. Why every sport doesn’t adopt a power-league system is beyond me. I understand the reasons against it—you can have longer road trips (with higher fuel costs), your backups don’t get to play as much because every game is close, you can have teams with major differences in enrollment—but this past weekend of blowouts in football was the final straw. My three games were Nyack-Sleepy Hollow, North Rockland-Clarkstown South and Albertus-Blind Brook. The scores were 40-0, 40-14 (40-0 after the third quarter) and 51-8. And these were the games we covered—two decided playoff berths.
So I would like to take a moment and thank the powers that be for instituting power-based hockey leagues. Sure, one or two teams might be misplaced depending on who shows up at the start of the season, but the majority of the games are extremely competitive, which is more than I can say for football.
Anyway, here’s some more hockey news. The Byram Hills position was filled by Steve Annunziato, who was an assistant at Rye Town/Harrison the past three seasons. He previously played CHSHL hockey (I believe at Xaverian, but I’m working on confirming that).
And the Mamaroneck schedule is out. The Tigers will go upstate to the Saratoga tournament Dec. 12-13 (vs. Orchard Park and Liverpool), the Auburn tournament Jan. 2-3 (vs. Shaker-Colonie and TBA), and the Massena tournament Feb. 13-14 (vs. Saratoga and Massena). They will also host Stepinac, Yorktown and Monroe-Woodbury in the Tiger Tournament Dec. 26-27. The other non-league games are against Cortland at SUNY Cortland Jan. 17, and at Whitesboro Jan. 18.
That Mamaroneck-Massena potential matchup on Feb. 14 could be a preview of the state quarterfinals on March 10, since the DI winner against plays Section 10 (but this time it’s on the road).

mamaroneck goin all the way
I like your ideas Harold. The AD’s with their $130,OOO plus salaries should be coming up with some inventive ways to implement a power league and stick with it.
A form of this was done a couple of years ago within the class A football classification, it was called the “Piner” system I believe. The best teams were put in a separate division, so for example this year in class A you would see Ossining, Somers, Nyack and Harrison in the same division. “Power teams” were ranked for playoffs, so a higher division team would not be harmed for playoffs by having 3 to 4 losses.
It was abandoned after one year. Rumor was the coaches were against it, they didn’t like having a competitive game each week.
I totally disagree. Leave the AD’s out of this and let the hockey coaches decide whats best, THEN have the AD’s bless the thing.
No one knows their teams better than the coaches and the coaches (most of whom have been around a long time) know what is best for the league. I doubt there will be much sandbagging, if any, by them whereas the AD’s, who dont have a clue about hockey, might want to let their teams drop a division or two to do better.
Just my 2 cents.
Whoa…this was a small diversion to a HS football topic.
Harold was curious why football did not have power leagues. I explained that Class A football had a power league structure about 5 years ago, but it was dropped because the coaches (of the better teams, not the teams getting blown out) were against it.
Back to hockey…I like the power league structure in place and the coaches should have input to team placement. We agree on that.
harold, when are you going to be posting your input on each team this year? are there power rankings? who are the keys to each team this year in league 1?
keys to iona
-cannot let shots on own net (at best, very mediocre goalie situation…)
-with the exception of small matt kirincic’s size, D are big, strong and fast (gillespie, patalano, murphy, mccrory)
-forwards can be rolled 3-4 lines deep (3 lines of speed and talent)
looks like the former “JR College program” is going to be competitive in D1 club. Canton’s team record is 4-2. Pretty good start for a program making a “big leap”.
At least 2 former Clarkstown North players contributing to the Canton successful “leap”.
It would definitely be nice to see Canton possibly break into the top #25 ACHA ranked teams. In order to do this they would have to somehow pull off a miracle win against Delaware. Still, they really suprised the heck out of Robert Morris University only losing to the #18 ranked ACHA team 5-4. Robert Morris played all their starters the next game and if not for the brilliance of former Laconia Leafs(IN SAME LEAGUE AS NATOLI AND REAGAN) goalie Robbie Fallick, stopping 35 out of 37 shots in net for Robert Morris, Canton may have been able to pull off the upset. That Robert Morris team is good and may move up from #18 after beating a Stony Brook team that is loaded with former Applecore players. Its great that ACHA D. 1 finally has a competetive NY team that our kids can pay in state tuition for.
acha,
how long before canton makes the jump to sunyac ncaa level you think?
oops
That depends on a lot of things. Mostly boring things revolving around money, like league initiation fees which are extremely costly for schools, Title IX rules(must have another womens team(doens’t have to be hockey)) which double the costs. However the teams standing does do mean something. Like anything else if they can get to the point where they become a top 10 ACHA team, than pressure can be put upon the administration to try and get it done. But its a catch 22, if you can be a top 10 ACHA team, than that means you are playing 40+ games a year, playing in showcases, planes all over the country, and playing in a National Tournament….So these top 10 ACHA teams like it right where they are…..I wouldn’t worry about getting them into the SUNY league now. They would get destroyed, I love the fact that they played a quality team like RMU and held there own, but they also gave up over 100 shots in 2 games!!!! and Plattsburg would make RMU look like Mites. I recently talked to Bill Fitzgerald, the head coach at Scranton, he was also the head coach when Scranton was in the SUNY league. I asked him if he is more or less talanted than when he was in the SUNY. He said they are exactly the same. But they would be 1-20 every year in the SUNY, in the ACHA they will beat the weaker teams and lost to the good ones.
Hey Mimi,
Looks like you know alot about Iona Prep. Looking at last years numbers, it looks like they will have a very strong First line with Cambria,Lopez and Molinaro. But watch out for Nolan. He played up at Brewster and he’s a real player and only a sophomore. Could cause alot of trouble for the competition.
Please get an ACHA forum already. Stop posting on here and changing the topic.
By the way, Annuziato should be a great new head coach.
Hey, I only chip in when someone brings up this topic first, I try to be informative since a lot of people are novices on club and D. 3 hockey, I stay out of the regular HS bashing.
Just like Natoli and other former section 1 players are still being talked about on blog, ACHA is talking about Canton because there are former section 1 players on the team. It is nice to hear that about other former players playing college hockey. Thanks ACHA, keep us updated.
Thanks for the ACHA information. Practice hasn’t started, games are a month away. This is the perfect time to hear about something that the kids playing hockey in section 1 can reasonably attain, that is college club hockey. For this time of the year it is more informative than just another post saying “mamo rules”...
The power league is great for hockey. In sports like baseball I think they should adopt a Piner system as well. In baseball you have a ridiculously horrible league that houses all the Yonkers teams, and then you have a ridiculously powerful league that has RCK, JJEF, Mahopac, Carmel etc.
I don’t think it will happen in other sports, but thank goodness that it works great for hockey. It would be ridiculous to see Suffern play Carmel 2 times per year just because they are about the same school size.
I agree with football, you have a school like New ROchelle a perrenial powerhouse playing in the Yonkers division which is a joke for them. IT is a cakewalk to the playoffs every year for New Rochelle football. The lopsided scores are hard to stomach.
ACHA
Good stuff, off hand do you how many other Sec.1 players are in the ACHA at D1 OR D2.Good to hear even if some people think its garbage hockey
Ive seen many of the games and its actually pretty good.
What do you think.
One reason you can’t have power leagues in football because of the injury issue. So many teams are reliant on one or 2 players, and if a team is playing in a competitive game every single week then your stars will have to play all 4 quarters, which will lead to more injuries. Football is too physically demanding and injury prone to have teams have to play a competitive game every single week. Coaches would also have to formulate new gameplans that need to be more inventive every single week. Another issue in football is that there is a limited amount of playoff spots, because there are a limited amount of rounds in the playoffs, unlike hockey, baseball, basketball….. In hockey, qualifying isn’t really an issue, the power leagues set up an issue with seeding, in football, it would be difficult to figure out who deserves to be in the playoffs, with only 8 spots. What differentiates the 6th place team in the 1st league as opposed to the 3rd place team in the 2nd league?
how long is the scarsdale player who got the broken nose going to be out?
I notice ETB is back on the blog!
I think he did not break his nose he may not be injured at all
Not affiliated with ETB, nice try
Has ETB got that goalie situation figured out yet because it’s a shame with even just a decent goalie they could have done so much better last year maybe even an upset over Mamaroneck in the playoffs I mean the shots were like 36-34, but the score was 13-1
From what I have seen with Suny Canton it looks like they really haven’t played any real comp. at least according to the records of the teams they played.
ACHA – great stuff, do you happen to know of more Sec.1 players in the ACHA in D1 or D2, I know most people think this level is garbage hockey but I have seen a few games and it is very good hockey, actually better than some NCAA D3 teams Ive seen.
What do you think Thanks.
You’re kidding, right? The shots in last years Mamo-ETB playoff game were even because Mamo was playing lines of Freshman by the 2nd period. Are you seriously trying to say there was more to this game than a 13-1 blow out?
And why does everybody constantly criticize Mamo? Is it their fault they’ve got four lines of O and three lines of D that are BETTER THAN ANY OTHER TEAMS 1st LINES IN THE SECTION, except for Suffern’s?
I can’t wait for the games to start so we can get back to trashing suffern and CN. and when mamo loses some games, they will finally shut up, but I won’t because I remind them of all thier foolish posts here.
Is Mamo playing North? They will shut up after that game!
Oh, pleaze! Now I can’t wait until it’s time to drop that first puck. But must we have to put up with this endless talk and then have to swat these little flies like Pelham, Rye, RTH, White Plains twice each until it’s time for the real games v. Suffern and upstate? What a bore.
And don’t get me started about the Catholic league. I see a ton of those games every year too and they just don’t measure up. The rivalry and tradition makes for great matches, I’ll give you that. But other than a few bright stars they are just a bunch of below-average League 1 teams.
HIGH UPON A HILL COMMANDING VALLEY, SEA AND SKY.
STANDS OUR … ALMA MATER DEAR OLD MAMARONECK HIGH.
MAM-AR-ONECK, MAM-AR-ONECK, DA, DA, DA, DA, DA, DUMM …
hey normal, this is high school hockey. in new york. downstate
if ETB can find a goalie they have a shot at winning league 2
if ETB can find a goalie they have a very good shot at winning league 2
reality check bud mamo’s good but to call the rest of section 1 “flies” is overdoing it a bit
That first ETB comment was not criticizing mamo at all. People trash you guys as much as they trash suffern. If your really tired of being trashed all the time, move to one of the 20 other school teams that nobody cares about with no fans and no depth. See how cool you feel then.
bitterness aside, if ETB had 1 of 10 goalies in sec 1 (atleast that i can think of) they would be one of my top 3 favorites to win the section. But they don’t so too bad.
are you kidding me your saying mamo has four lines of O and three lines of D that are BETTER THAN ANY OTHER TEAMS 1st LINES IN THE SECTION, except for Suffern’s? I can think of lines in each league that can compete with mamronecks first line and definitly better then the second and third lines in L2 with Willows on any line for CN thats better then the second and third lines, Hagens line for ETB is better, in L3 theres that NewRo line and right there I named three lines and I’m sure there is alot more
Flory Emerson Duffy
OK Mamo, which of your first liners are better than Lopez,Cambria,Molinaro. Jackson and Fine would be lucky to make Iona’s second line. What a joke!
section 1 championship is at west point this year.. thoughts?
“to normal” – i agree with you. Besides Suffern, there are alot of lines that are better than any Mamaroneck’s lines:
CN definitely with Willows and Shuman on their first line
ETB’s first line with Hagen
Pelham’s line with Flory, etc.
Scarsdale – probably Oliverio’s line
Heck even North Rockland has a case with O’Conner’s line
etc.
Mahopac’s first line with Perrelle and Mastrocola and what about Sleepy Hollow with Pese and Halpin Ossining with Dorgon and Melle there are alot of solid first lines out there. Let Mamoraneck and Suffern think that they have the best. The only difference may be that they have more depth the other teams basically only have one solid line.
JJ-Greenberg and Rofofsky
Did I miss something here? Teams have not started tryout or practices yet, how do we know who is on what line?
Mamaroneck is loaded, they do have 4 quality lines of forwards and defense. Now having said that as truth, which it is, then they should be blowing people away, and…....they dontt
So with all that artillery and all the quality skaters they have in the arsenal they should be far and away the best club out there. They trailed Suffern all year and finished behind them in the regular season although they did beat Suffern at the end when it counts. They had many tight games with league one “flies” like Pelham, Rye. So I guess they are not playing up to their potential? If they are so much better equipped right?
Section 1 championship for D1 and D2 will be at Tate Rink in West Point played one after the other. Interesting call here. I think it is good to have a neutral site but you do take away some of the importance of a league title. Also, the rink at is 200×90 feet which is slightly larger then normal but not a big deal I’m sure. it is further for some teams like Mamoroneck but I think it could be interesting how many fans the finals will attract. the seating capacity is 2700 so it wont be filled but at least nobody will get locked out like at SportOrama or Hommocks. Very nice rink though and has great ice. Can get a bit hot for players too. obviously there are always some negatives to any decision but I think this is a good one for the section.
Rye’s schedule out today. The first 1/2 of the season (thru mid January) will be quite a challenge with 2 games vs Suffern, 1 Mamo, 1 Pelham, 1 WP and 6 games vs. upstate teams (cohosting {with Pelham} CBA and Queensbury (both ranked) and then away at RFA tourney (played ranked teams RFA and Sweet Home last year) and then up with Mamo to play at Whitesboro (ranked) and Cortland. 3 November scrimmages with Ossining, ETB and Scarsdale.
Normal- I have always ranked your Tigers very high. But, as you will see this season, almost every League One team has 3 forwards that can compete with your top 3, let alone your top 12. I like your team’s depth at both forward and D, although I heard Gardiner was recently injured. Hope for a quick recovery.
Last time i checked Mamo actually did blow out Rye and pelham and the other teams in in league one besides suffern. Actually Mamo at the end of the season Mamo beat Pelham 5-0 and Rye 5-2
Mamaroneck does have good lines but for guys like Fine,Jackson and who ever else have to prove they are better then other lines. Conner ran the show last year I think he had 30 more points then the next closest guy on the team, lets see how they do without Conner this year
Mamaroneck= overrated!! Yes they have a lot of depth but other then glaser (the goalie), nobody is really that good. a ton of mediocre players don’t have much of a chance in HS hockey.
Everybody stop saying teams are overrated or suck! wait until that first puck is dropped and then we can judge everybody, right now anyone can say mamo is better than suffern and vice versa we are all basing judgements on last year, HOWEVER this is a new year with kids improving and new additions so please get over yourselves
I’ll take a ton of average skilled, hardworking kids any day. The ability to run 3 plus good lines is very advantageous.
Well, we’ll soon find out if that formula works, now won’t we Darcy.
you obviously have not watched many HS hockey games big AL. Without 1 great first line, the team cannot compete. There is such a huge span of abilities in HS hockey that you need 1 great line to be succesful. Mamaroneck had it last year with connor on the team, you don’t have it this year. Won’t help having 3 lines when other teams, (suffern and upstate teams) first lines score every other shift for the first 2 periods. Now maybe in the third period having 3 lines will help but it won’t matter at that point, you will be down too much to come back. So back to what I said earlier, you will have to depend on Glaser in goal. He is the team, I am tired of hearing about this depth BS. Now if the first two lines at Mamaroneck can compete at the highest level you have a shot, if they can’t all the depth in the world isn’t going to help you.
Some teams do it without one big line. I look at Pelham our big rival in division 2. Did they have a player in the top 25 in scoring? I doubt they did and they were in the section final for the umptienth time correct?
Gardnier did get injured and I beleive he broke his leg, he won’t be back into at least January maybe later.
having the game at tate rink would just be a shame it takes away from the great atmosphere of a smaller rink packed to capicity plus tate is way out of the way from most team in section one i dont even know if it would even be considered in the boundaries of section 1
Pelham plays differently. Every other contending team has big front lines that carry the scoring. Pelham plays more team style game. They probably could care less who scores as long as they keep the other team out of there end and they play solid defense. It works for them
you are right it does take away from it and it is a section 9 rink, its not even in section 1. well thats what the section has decided this year so we will see how it turns out this year and maybe they will change it back if it doesnt work out too well.
as a CN fan, i’m interested and excited to see what they can do this year – should be a big bounce back year. while they are in league 2, they do play a couple league 1 teams (white plains and RTH), they play Monroe Woodbury twice, i believe RCDS again, and according to their schedule, they are in tournament hosted by White Plains on Thanksgiving weekend – anyone know anything about the team in that tournament?
hockey games start in 1 month!
In the white plains torunment I know for sure Mahopac Brewster,White Plains of course, Monore Woodbury usually participates Somers waa there last year too
Im pretty sure that the championships will not be played at Tate Rink
If people really think that Iona is better than Mamk and that Ionas first line is better than Mamk’s possible first line, then they are just simply retarded, Iona with King last year was a decent team, if i recall they got smoked by Suffern like 5-0? and Mamk had beat suffern and only allowed 3 goals in the league championship and sectional final combined, i really hope the two teams scrimmage so all these catholic league people can get a reality check and realize that public leagues are way better. (for example a kid Baum on Iona lives in the Mamk district and if anyone knows him or has seem him play he is horrible and would never make even the 3rd line for Mamk)
I can’t wait to see Mamk lose some games this year they brag about so much and same with Suffern but at least they have a history if I am right they won 23 sections in a row Mamk thinks they are so great, it will be so much fun to see Jackson and Fine and Glaser struggle and lose to teams they would have beat last year. You’re best player will be Fine who is not even close to kids like Hiller or Urban or Willows any theres plenty more believe me
agree with post above. once they play north or suffern their supposed amazing team will be ruined. Willows and Hiller will run their team past Mamk. Shuman and Hill could probably also alone take out Mamk. GOing to be a hilarious season
hey NO TATE,
talk to a coach in the section and ask them. it was announced at the annual section meeting
that both section final games will be played at Tate Rink. D1 at 6 p.m. and D2 following after that scheduled for 8 p.m. I am 100% sure it is. Go ask a coach and get back to me.
Mamks defense returns as well as glaser in goal and they had no problem shutting down sufferns ruthberg salt and hiller line when it counted i dont see how one player will be able to beat mamk alone this year
Many of Suffern sectional championships went uncontested. A good many were achieved when they were the only division 1 school in the section. All others were division 2. I will say though that Suffern was probably the top contender if the d1 schools were in with them
and the date of the finals is Sunday March 1st in case you were wondering
I was just wondering why the penalties in high school are a minute and a half instead of the traditional two minutes. Does anyone have any idea?
Yes, and while Suffern won sections without challenges since they were the only D1 team, Mamaroneck was a D2 which was a joke and they were winning sectionals by beating small schools 4 times smaller so it evens out between Mamaroneck and Suffern
The reason its 1:30 is due to the fact that it is a 15 minute period not a 20. If it were a twenty minute period then it makes sense to have 2 minute penalties
Jesus what is with everyone and hating Mamk, im not saying they are the best team alive and that they are some superstars and better than suffern (they actually might not be this yr) but at least show some respect, i’ll say this they are a talented team and they will be a strong force this year, thats it im not going to hate on them or descredit specific ppl.
Whoa whoa, they aren’t playing them up there in West Point
does anyone know where to find the mamaroneck 08-09 schedule?
okay, don’t believe me. i don’t care. just trying to give everyone the correct info and that is the correct info. i guarantee it 100%. a head coach told me the day after the meeting.
Harold if you are reading these posts, can you call a coach or a section administrator and post it officially that the section finals will be at Tate Rink in West Point. I think everyone deserves to know for sure instead of all this speculation. Thanks
You can find anybody’s schedule at section1athletics.org then click schedules then game schedules
i think the teams participating in the White Plains Tourny was the same as last year:
White Plains
Stepinac
Monroe-Woodbury
Brewster
RTH?
Somers/North Salem
Hey Iona=Joke,
First of all stop thinking in the past. Mamaroneck IS NOT a super power. It’s a joke to think that your two top players (Jackson and Fine) are going to take the place of Connor. Connor was an impact player since his sophmore year. JAckson and Fine have really been transparent for the past two years! Your new Super Stars have done nothing! NADA!. To think that they are the best first line around is a JOKE. It’s very clear that even in League 1 they would not have the best line around. And to think that the Jackson,Fine is better than Cambria and Lopez is just amazing. Combined Jackson and Fine have 98 points over two years and Lopez and Cambria have 177 points combined. Wake up and smell the coffee or stop drinking the Kool-aid.
Let’s face it, Your Fine and Jackson line will put up points but that’s because they will alot of ASSISTS from your Scorekeeper. Do you realize that Hagen had over 80% of his assists at home and very few on the road. I wonder why? The word is out about the Mamaroneck’s Scorekeeper. THey give out two assists for every goal, even when the player has nothing to do with the play. I remember one game last year when Connor stole the puck and went down and beat our goalie, when I looked at the box score the next day, the scorekeeper handed out two assists. It’s amazing since NO ONE ELSE TOUCHED THE PUCK!
SO I expect Fine and Jackson to have alot more assists than goals. But let it be Known, Jackson nor Fine WILL never be able to replace a Connor. Connor was the team and it will take some time for someone to fill his void!
I am a fan of neither Iona or Mamaroneck but I will say this going by stats is not fair. Ionas schedule is weak. Although its not there fault they play Fordham, St Edmunds, Farrell, and Chaminade four times each for league contests. Last year all of those teams were weak or had down seasons. Iona played 9 games I consider tough opponents, St Marys, Rye Country Day, White Plains Stepinac 4 times Suffern and Monroe. Mamaroneck on the other hand played about 15 tough games. So the stats will be different.
Iona and Tigers,
Yeah Mamaroneck played tough teams last season like Fordham Prep, Mahopac, John Jay, Eastchester (LOL), Yorktown.
Looks like IONA played alot of the same teams that Mamaroneck played with bacically the same type of results. Not much of a difference. Both beat Fordham Prep and White Plains by a goal or two. But Mamaroneck got killed by Monroe Woodbury and Iona lost in OT. Actually, it looks like Stepinac lost to Monroe Woodbry in the Mamaroneck tournament in OT also.SO Stepinac might of been better than Mamaroneck also. ANd let’s face the facts, playing upstate these days is not as difficult as it was 3-4 years ago. Play the competition that Suffern plays and then you can shoot of your mouth!
Looks like this years most hated team will be Mamaroneck. Good they deseve it! They win one big game in ten years and now they are the Power House team in the Area! Give me a break.
Can’t wait to see their SUPER STARS (Fine and Jackson). I agree with Scorekeeper. Connor was the team and it will be interesting to see if ANYONE will ever be able to take his place. Mamaroneck lost ALOT when Connor left. Jackson and FIne will disappear. But thier scorekeeper will definitely help them out in the stat category.
By the way, how come Fine and Jackson didn’t make the Empire team? If I’m not mistaken, CONNOR DID!
I think its great that the sectional finals will be played at West Point. I look forward to seeing both games on the same day.
As far as distance from parts of section 1, well, it’s close enough. It’s a far commute for some schools to the County Center for basketball playoffs, this year football finals are in Mahopac also not in Westchester central and 2 year ago lax finals were in Suffern, not local to the Yorktowns and John Jay powers of the lax world. I’ve attended some of these events and they can accomodate all comers. I can’t say the same thing for recent playoff-championship games at Sport-o or Ice Hutch without arriving 5 hours prior to game time.
This was a big topic of debate on last years blog, just maybe the hockey king pins have listened to the power of the blog.
I think a few things. I think its a great venue, but it takes away from the local rinks. I root for Mamaroneck and i like the fact that if the boys win they get home ice advantage and the final goes through Hommocks. I know its dicey knowing you may have to go through sportorama if Suffern comes in ahead of Mamaroneck. It kills the home ice advantage. The home ice only counts now for maybe two games, 1/4s and semis. In some cases some teams get Byes through quarters so the regular season and top seeding means little when discussing home ice advantage.
Fine and Jackson never tried out for Emprires
Fine Jackson,
Are you sure because I heard Jackson was there! Not sure about Fine….. WOuldn’t make any difference anyway, neither would of made the team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Since when does making the Empire team mean anything? Everyone knows it is and has been politically flawed. Everyone knows that while some who make it are deserving it really matters where you play travel. Where you play travel determines if you make it. Look at the rosters over the last few seasons, you will see players on those teams that do not belong in the top twenty of our area. Heck, they are not even in the top five of their teams. Pointing to weather or not someone makes Empires is dumb. All of us could probably put together three teams that look better on paper of kids who did not tryout or who got cut.
Jackson and Glaser tried out for Empires. Did not see Fine at any of the tryouts. To be fair, Jackson was still recovering from ACL surgery and Glaser was coming of a demanding baseball season. Neither was at their top form at those tryouts.
Toughest schedules in Section 1:
1. Suffern- League One plus Don Bosco and 3 tough upstate tourneys
2. Rye- League One (Mamo and Suffern 2X each) plus 5 of 6 upstate opponents were ranked lat year.
3. Pelham- almost as tough as Rye’s, Massena a real test, but Niskayuna, Saranac, Malone, Saratoga not perennial upstate power houses
4. Mamaroneck- Have League One and Massena and Whitesboro, but the other upstate teams are not the caliber of what Suffern or Rye has scheduled.
High school home ice advantage.
Their is some comfort playing in your home rink and many of the Mamaroneck kids have called Hommocks home ice since mite hockey.
A partisan crowd is one of the big advantages of home ice. This is somewhat nullified for a local HS championship. I’d think that a Suffern-Mamaroneck championship game crowd would be evenly split, at worse a 60-40 split, whether the games was at SOR or Hommocks.
I’m sure their were plenty of Mamaroneck fans at SOR for last years final. I did not attend. I’ve been left outside of SOR at a couple of North-Suffern games, so I didn’t bother.
Maybe West Point will turn out to be a dud. I’ve seen good high school games with lively crowds at NJ’s Mennen and South Mountain Arena’s, both with about the same seating capacity as West Point. I’m just hoping that the use of West Point will allow more interested fans to attend.
Tate Arena
I think playing a championship game there would be alot of fun and would eliminate the capacity problems of the usual venues. I think most serious fans would attend, although some might not want to drive. I can’t believe it is more than 45 minutes to 1:15 for any fans of the potential finalists which is not that bad. In NYC, they have played city basketball finals at MSG for similar reasons and people simply commute to see a big game.
Who is Rye playing from Upstate? I know both Rye and Pelham are playing Queensbury, and they were in the final four last season.
Who does Rye play outside of the league this year?
turnbull going old school
not calling up any talented sophs (lynett, nolan, patalano) to play varsity…rather, roster will consist of only juniors and seniors (some won’t see any ice…essentially, making a statement he’s going 2/3 lines with 3/4 D)...jv should fight chaminade and st. anthony’s for championship…aim is to win together now in order to fight for chshl varsity titles the next 2 years as well (also, iona supposedly has 18/19 freshman that play…some with sound shore and brewster backgrounds…)
Iona Prep is becoming a significant sports power in the area. Congratulations on the impressive football win over St. Anthony’s, with this they can lay claim to best in state. It was not to long ago that IP football while respectable, was only middle of the CHSFL, not quite New Rochelle or North Rockland level for football.
I could see the hockey program following the same trajectory. It could be a powerful draw for good hockey players not in the Mamaroneck, Pelham or Rye districts.
To Rye and Non League games:
I think Rye still has 2 non league slots to fill. In addition to the 14 League One games, Rye is scheduled to host Scarsdale at Playland and will play at RCDS. They have 6 contests against upstate teams over 3 weekends:
1. Syracuse’s Christian Brothers Academy and Queensbury the weekend before XMas at the Ice Hutch (Pelham also plays those two teams the same weekend)
2. Rome Free Academy Tourney the weekend after XMas. Last year they played ranked host RFA and New York State Tourney DII semi finalist Sweet Home. This is a very competitive tourney where Rye’s last 4 games up there have gone to OT or shootout.
3. At Whitesboro and Cortland over MLK weekend. Mamo travels upstate with Rye for these two opponents who both came to the Jungle last season over the same holiday weekend. Whitesboro is a perennial DII state powerhouse. Cortland was a competitive team last year.
rye is a joke
bundy,
couldn’t agree with you more…
lacrossemaking a name in the tri-state area (triziano led nation in goals last year, team played many local powers, including some in that upper westchester/putnam area, and won…won chsaa title i believe)hockeybecoming more and more dominant (winning titles as of late, inflow of hockey players becoming so large that varsity can’t afford putting sophs on (reminds me of iona in the 90s)...constantly playing local powers – suffern, mamaroneck, rcds, monroe-woodbury, etc.baseballcoach gallo always has a title-contending team…pitchers that come out of that school constantly getting drafted and playing professional ballbasketballvic always takes teams with unknown talent and goes deep every year with them (everyone, watch pope this year…)track/field/cross country/etc.coach mitchell i think is in every hall of fame possible…team always top in tri-state…soccerjust won the Archdiocesan championship and made quarterfinals of City championshipgolfalways a strong tradition (connors, fitzpatrick, etc.) – ireland spring trip every year well worth it – one year (connors/fitz years), 4 of the 5-man-rotation were nationally recognized…golf team was winning State championships left and right…tennisstrong tradition like golf team – used to have nationally recognized powers (perna, bass, etc.) – lots of players play D1 – not sure how the program is now…footballenough said…the school is blatantly making a name for itself…
to “rye is garbage,
When Rye wins its third straight section championship then I’d like to hear you say that again.
For those of you who care, SUNY Canton got crushed by Delaware (A top 10 ACHA team) this past weekend. 9-0 and 5-2. Delaware coach tried to do the right thing and started most of his back ups in both games, not even giving his starting goalie any action in either.
I heard the Canton team would have fared better if not for some injuries.
Still, great job by Canton for even putting Delaware on the Schedule. Canton remains a possible great place to play in the future and may be a nice place to grow with the team for all you HS Seniors out there.
In other college news, CS alum Corey Conte dressed in Lebabnon Valley’s (NCAA D. 3) first game this past weekend.
Yes, Rye has a tough schedule, and I expect that, however I must be even handed as a Rye fan and say our divvy 2 rival Pelham has an equally tough schedule. I hear that they have Massena who was the div 1 state champs, Saratoga is on a par with those section 3 teams, Niskayuna is a solid div 1 team that plays in a tough section 2 league, Pelham is only playing 1 league 2 team all season all the rest are tournaments or league 1 games. They are playing Queensbury and CBA when our Rye guys play them. I think both Rye and Pelham are doing it smart to take on this schedule although it could be risky as there are no weak links on either schedule
Nothing risky about the tough schedules for Pelham and Rye. Out of league game results won’t affect playoff seedings. The Pelham and Rye coaches focus on one thing, the Section championship. Pelham went to the Frozen Four a few years back with a below .500 record. The only thing a tough schedule affects is mid season bragging rights, power rankings and individual stats. And the Suffern boys were able to find themselves at the top of those stat lists, even playing their tough schedule last season. As a Rye fan, I look forward to all the challenges and hope we meet the Pelicans for the title up at West Point.
Iona
I am sure that Nolan and the other two kids have more talent then some of the juniors. Those kids playing JV is a joke
For ACHA and those who care: After driving 9 hours and with their 3 captains out with injuries, the Canton team with the 2 CN boys playing did the best they could—the 9-0 score did not reflect the effort they made playing the 4th best ACHA Div. 1 team in the nation. Saturday night was a much closer game and these Canton players (which is made up of only 2 seniors and mostly sophs and frosh) played their heart out and kept it close.
Rye is not going to beatPelham this year. Rye lost ALL their scorers from last year. They have No one that can keep up with Flury. Flury is going to be a force this year. By far the best player in League one this year. Can even give Willows some competition for top player this year.
Fanotgame i agree with most of your schedule toughness except for mamo, they are playing in more upstate tournaments than Suffern and their competition is pretty rigorous. Mamk will be traveling 5 times in the regular season including games against teams like Shaker colony, Orchard Park (near buffalo), Liverpool, Auburn, Cortland, Whitesboro, and Massena.
I guess you can say rye and pelhams schedules are tougher because they have to play upstate teams plus Suffern and Mamk the powerhouses, but i think some more credit will-eventually be given to Mamk, they upstate competition this year might be a little bit of a challenge, im sure they will come out with some wins (if not all).
Get real,
Very good points, Rye will suffer a lot after losing eck, and rodgers, and others on D like gordon. Although they will be lacking in power I think rye-pelham will be close but it i would go with pelham coming out on top in both games. Also Flory is very talented but i think it is a but much to say that no one from rye can keep up with him, he is a force this year but i have a feeling Willows is going to blow him out of the water especially since willows will be in league 2 and just embarrassing all the teams.
Get Real,
First of all his name is Flory not flury, so if you can’t spell his name you clearly don’y know really how good he is.
Second Flory is a very good player, but be realistic Flory had mabye 40 points as a junior, Willows had over 100 as a sophmore, they are not even remotely close. Willows is by far the best player in the section. Finally dont worry Rye will score plenty of goals this year and they have much better goaltending.
It looks like Suffern’s goaltending might be a questionable area this year. Although the other two goalies barely played because of natoli, their stats are not very impressive.

Agreed there are a few who should not be on JV. Thats another negative about the catholic high school leagues. Aside from playing the same teams four times in league games, no ice cuts for regular season games, too many games at odd rinks and no home ice, most catholic teams in all sports do not allow freshman and sometimes sophs on varsity. I went through this with one of my boys and at its makes little sense. Maybe twenty years ago it made sense, not now. I prefer the public league to the catholic league and I have had kids in both
Also Flory is not the best player in league 1 this year. Hiller is much better.
Delaware is actually #5 after a loss to Westchester, good to see the North kids are both playing, I heard one of them wasn’t dressing when the season first started.
Tough to take a 9 hour trip and then play. Guaranteed if it was the other way around, Delaware would have come up the night before and spent the next morning recovering. But then again thats why they are #5. Hopefully Canton learned a little about what they have to do get to the next level. I don’t want to see them fall into the Binghamton, Rochester, Oswego (club level), which with all due respect gives ACHA D. I a bad name, these other NY schools say they are D. 1, but are not even good club D. 2 teams.
Canton, a team in the jr college hockey league only last year, has proven that they are D1 club worthy. When healthy, they have an excellent record and played very well against Robert Morris earlier. They had to make the leap with a very young team which put them at an immediate disadvantage yet they have proven they can win many games. With 2 former clarkstown north players on the roster, it is clear that D1 club is very much in reach of the top 25% of the section one players.
Mike Duffy terminated his contract with Suffolk PAL Junior B Hockey team. He know is playing on split season New Jersey Colonials, he will miss one Pelham hockey game.
Victor Dzenis has terminated his contract with Applecore Junior B Empire Hockey team. He is now playing for no team and will play all of Pelham’s games.
Whats good fanotgame?
and I said know instead of now. My mistake.
And Flory doesn’t get a lot of points because he plays in a system where kids don’t get a lot of points. Willows got the 100 point season because his line was on the ice 95% of the time and he was surrounded by 4 excellent hockey players. I’m not saying Flory is better than him, because he isn’t. If Flory gets 37 points this year he will be the 4th all time leading scorer in Pelham history. Other than the D’Agastinos and Fredricks Pelham hasn’t had big scorers, including Furlong and Emmet.
Overall Pelham has slightly better position players but Rye has far superior goaltending. There are sure to many good games between the two teams and they will most likely meet in the section finals should be an exciting season.
Top 5 players in each league in order:
U R correct Sec. 1, the top 25% can play for some ACHA D. 1 team. And that’s what its all about, the fact that the 2 North kids can even have the opportunity to play against a team like Delaware is special. That’s also why Canton is a great place to go right NOW!!, Because in 2-3 years, they may be like a Delaware, in which case only the top 5% of Sec 1 HS players might make it. The North players are in a perfect situation because they are already on the team, they can now buy their time and improve so that when they are seniors they will be at the point where they can still play with the hot shot freshman coming in. And believe me, now that Canton is in this league, they will attract a whole other level of player in the coming years.
After watching those teams from Pelham they always have forwards who play solid two-way hockey. So they give up point opportunities and the trade off has been a pretty successful program that wins. Some players cantt do it the statistics are to important to them. If a forward can just hang around on defense and wait for a pass sure you will get more offense and points but you may not win many games.
I think the forward numbers were down the last few seasons because Pelhams goalkeepers were inexperienced and they may have played even more defensively than they normally would have. Matters little as I expect them to come to play every night
My top 5 in league 1
Hiller
Willows
Jackson
Flory
Perrelle
yes I listed Willows as a league 1 kid because I cannot handle the fact that North is now a league 2 team. THAT is ridiculous!
willows is league 2
Flory, Emerson, Duffy, rivera, hernandez, reilly, alpert, camardella and dooley.
Mamone, Dzenis, Harms, Landis, Perrazzio
Lamdin Durand
looks pretty solid to yours truly
ACHA
Amazingly, I absolutely agree with your follow up comments. Canton may become a club powerhouse which would limit the Section 1 qualifiers to the top 5%.
Flory is a very good player, but he is not even in the same vicinity as Willows, nobody is. Willows is the best player i’ve seen in section 1 since foster (and many others agree with me). he is a special player and he is a rare multi-tool player. not only does he score, he makes everyone around him better, he’s not afraid to check, he’s not afraid to be checked, etc. he’s one of the toughest kids i’ve ever met, hands down. north is THAT much of a threat this yar simply because he is back on the team. he joined his prep school team mid-season last year, and by the end of the year, he was still the leading scorer on the team, incredible.
and when he did score over 100 points as a sophomore in section 1, he had support from the Shumans and his older brother, BUT – Matt was the driving force of the team and set up a lot of the goals for the others.
my top 5 forwards in section 1:
Willows
Hiller
Flory
Perelle
Jackson
I listed Willows as a league 1 kid because I still cannot believe North is a league 2 team thats ridiculous
Rockin in Rockland,
JAckson???????????? You must be one of his parents. He’s not even consider3ed in the top ten!
Yeah right I am his uncle,
You may not like him but he is main part of that team. He is a creative play maker and you may think he is cheap or whatever but to deny his ability is wrong. I hope the team I go for kills Mamaroneck but he is their best forward and they do look like the favorite right now so I put him in. I am trying to be objective rather than just picking all kids I root for
Iona is winning the Catholic League this year.
its fun to post all these messages about where we think all the sec. 1 players will be going. but a reality check lets look at all the leagues around us. not only do they have to compete with their own sec. 1 opponents but then come the prep schools up north where college coaches are constantly picking up players
To Mamo Sched- you are spot on why I put Pelham’s and Rye’s schedule ahead of Mamo’s. Mamo will be a ranked DI team that both Pelham and Rye have to play twice.
To Sec 1 Fan- looks like the Pelham coach has all his boys lined up for the HS season. With that loaded senior class, the Pelicans look like the pre season D II favorite. The Garnets will build during the season and expect to see you guys up at West Point for the finale. With the junior hockey conflicts behind you, the early season match vs. Suffern should be very interesting.
Now that we have a better idea of who is actually playing for their HS teams this coming season, and having watched a lot of travel hockey this spring, summer and fall seasons, here are my preseason rankings (by position) for the League One teams:

I think Suffern is a bit under rated in your poll. For Suffern Mamaroneck will be the big challenge and Suffern will have to win that first game to take away the momentum Mamaroneck had after last season. I do agree that Pelham is the most dangerous of the rest of the teams as they are a calculating group and will have a game plan in those important games. I see everyone running out their best games against Mamaroneck since they are returning champs, I am happy to see the heat switch from Suffern to Mamaroneck and I feel Mamaroneck will feel that this season
how is that Flemming kid from Brewster? I thought last year was his first in this area and I believe he ended up as one of Brewster’s top scorers. I know he wasn’t a senior so is either a senior or maybe even a junior this year.
I am sure many fans will disagree with my rankings. I focus less on the top players, especially the top forwards (except in a special teams context). My take is that all of the League One teams can put together a first line that can skate with (and somewhat manage) the other League One teams’ top forward line at even strength. I also think almost every League One team has a solid D man who can move the puck, play physical and log tons of ice. When ranking teams, I ask myself the following questions, in the following order of importance: (1) Who is in goal? (2) How good are their special teams? (3) Who are the #2 and #3 D men? (4) What does that second line look like? The answers to those questions form my rankings.
Sufferns O is by far the best in league 1. Their O this year is better then it was last year. Their defensive is just as good defensively as it was last year but not as offensively.
Rewind,
You have to be kidding me Suffern’s O is good but not the best in league 1, there is no way they are better than last year, I glanced at their roster from last year with the stats, and other than the graduated seniors and a select couple of players (hill, hiller etc) the offense was only run by salt ruthberg and shore. Maybe the D is strong but still even teams like Pelham have better Offense this year, especially mamk, i cannot wait untill Mamk starts playing they are very under-rated by everyone on the blog.
I heard Clarkstown North will be playing White Plains in a scrimmage on November 13th. Any predictions on this league 2 team vs White plains which is league 1? Score?
i think its a little early to be predicting scores until we have seen the teams for at least a game or two, nonetheless predicting scores meaningless scrimmages…
obviously North is going to win i mean their three main players are all they need; willows schuman and mcindoe, WP was very good last year but without sigona and rui they will definetely struggle in league 1 (plus the goalie was not that god extremely overrated)
missing the big picture here. Mamaroneck is not under rated here. Lets face real facts. Last season Mamaroneck won the section based on one victory out of three tries against Suffern. The fact that Mamaroneck with all the quality players they have and having the only junior varsity in the section tells me they have under achieved in the past. I am proud of what Suffern has accomplished without the extras Mamaroneck has. Mamaroneck has many things and positives that no other team has in the section. the fact that they finally won a section should be a relief to the Mamaroneck fans. If I was a tiger fan I would be feed up. Having so many more skaters to choose from and still not winning a thing until last season. The tigers did win last season they beat Suffern once when it counted most and we need to give Mamaroneck credit but what about all the other years? The only time Mamroneck won a section was when they played in the smaller school division 2 sectionals. So nobody is under rating them at least Im not. They are the favorite because they won last year and they are also the favorite because like most years they have the most talent available and the most talent more guys than anyone else. It should be considered a major disappointment when they dont win the section with all the talent they have
to “royal mounted police” all I have to say to that is coulda, shoulda, woulda, but they didn’t. Really dumb post! Lots of kids does not equal “talent” just means lots of kids.
Mamaroneck has the target on their back this year, let’s see how they handle it
I wouldn’t put too much analysis into pre season scrimmages. The better coaches use the scrimmages as extended tryouts, or to see how different kids might play together. Maybe let the back up goalies play. Have forwards who may need to play D later during the season on a penalty kill or other tight situation practice D for the game. That is why they are called scrimmages, not games and why they don’t count on a team’s record.
How many Section 1 Division 1 titles did Suffern win because they were the only team in Division 1? Then years later they only had to play White Plains in their “only ” playoff game to win the section 1 Division 1 title. Most of Suffern’s titles came under this format.
Don’t demean any of Suffern’s earlier titles. No other school in the Hudson Vally region would have beaten them. The John Orlando-Sportorama-Ramapo Saints alliance have been around since the 70’s. Their was no better symbiotic relationship between coach-rink-club and high school.
Other high schools stayed D2 (when you were allowed to make your own declaration) most likely to avoid Suffern in the playoffs. Of course in many of those early years Suffern and Rockland County were in Section 9, Rockland-Orange counties.
While that’s true, most of those years Suffern romped through all of the competition in Section 1 all year long meaning that even if the playoff format was what it is now, they more than likely still would have won it every one of those years. WP had jumped into D1 to play them hoping for an off-night from Suffern or a lucky bounce that would have given them an upset. The only difference if the entire section had been in one tourney back then is that there would have been more chances for Suffern to have that off-night (although it was unlikely that they would).
Lots of kids do equal talent. Thats why every school in every sport is set up by enrollment. Of course there is a distinct advantage for a school to have three or four times bigger pool to select from. The bigger the pool the more athletes more talent. Bigger pools also create better competition within the program. If Suffern had as many modified and junior varsity players available to them as Mamaroneck does it would even the playing field. As it is now Suffern has had the upper hand every season except in one game last year
Can someone please answer my question? How many Section 1 Division 1 titles did Suffern win without having to play a single playoff game? It’s a joke that you people even mention these past titles like you won 4 rounds of playoffs or something because they were “given to Suffern” before the season even started.
Seems to me that back then Suffern took the easy root to the States.
Mamaroneck and their fans celebrating at Suffern after winning the section 1 championship.
Royal Mounted Police: Really dumb post. What do previous years matter, except for the past couple of seasons and only as they relate to who a team has left for THIS year? We’re talking about THIS year!
Mamo is favorite because they’ve got almost the entire team returning. They’re underrated because they have a bunch of last year’s League 1 scoring leaders returning. They’ve got a 6’6” monster in Hagan on D who nobody on this blog has even bothered mentioning! All of their kids play travel all over the place and have for years. Want me to continue?
these public school teams are in for a rude awakening. every team in the CHSHL took a huge blow accept for Iona. stepinac loosing reegan meant they lost their whole team. Iona smoked them 10-3 without him, also donofrio dation coughlin are also gone. fordham lost whoever was left from there undefeated run 3 years ago and have a half-way decent team. no one is certain yet how st. anthonys is but iona plays them the day after the iona/fordham game. overall the public schools have some excellent players, ultimately all the shcools might of graduated some of the best players around, from natoli to conner, rui and sagona, no one is going to be as dominant as in the past. iona has 3 solid lines this year and if you don’t think so check out this list, cambria molinaro lopez pellow mcardle lynett nolan the younger pellow and donelly. yes some are unheard but from what i have seen no one else can match that. yes there’s been rumors that they have no goal tending but that’s also not true. the backup from last year attended many camps over the summer and so far through out practice has been putting on show that no one can believe. granted he is no stefan dimario or joe reegan, but he can and will get the job done and iona’s defense will just have to be a little bit stronger.
THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS
I guess they don’t teach you about run on sentences in Catholic schools. Go back to english class. The CHSHL is like league 3.
thank you. I said that way above. Been to too many CHSHL games to count and they’re all just hacks but for a few stars.
And why do bloggers compare the public school teams in League 2, 3 and 4 as if they’re interchangeable with League 1 teams? I don’t get it. Have you seen the quality of play in a League 1 game vs. the lower leagues? It’s the difference between kids who can skate and kids who can’t.
under is the correct first word, the second word should not be rated it should be achieving. Exactly, they have the lock on talent and they should have beaten the Mounties plenty of times for league and section titles and they only have one to show for it.
Since you claim to know so much about Iona and seen them practice have you seen that Nolan and other freshman will be on the junior varsity this year? Thats how it works over there. So if anyone is in for a rude awakening its those star travel players who will play in that really awesome catholic jv league. Bet that will be fun.
Absolutely, Mamaroneck is the favorite. So, let’s see how they handle the pressure of every team coming after them each game.
The sectional championships that Suffern won without playoff challenges are 1995-2002 and it was eight of them. All other teams were division 2 amd during those 8 years that Suffern went upopposed Mamaroneck won 5 Pelham New Rochelle and North won 1 each.
8 Section 1 titles were given to Suffern before the season started. They did not earn them. They chose the easy way out.
How did they choose the easy route? What were their other options? The other 20 or so teams that were in the section (aside from WP) all chose to go D2 to avoid playing Suffern and give themselves a chance at a trip to Utica.
Every team during that span was given the choice of D1 or D2 at the start of the season. Suffern chose D1. There was no other option for them since D2 would have been a huge step down for them and made them an enormous fish in a tiny pond. Seems to me that the other 20 or so Section 1 teams chose the easy road by going D2 for a better shot at the state tourney than D1 where they may have belonged.
That was the way the system was back then and it has been corrected. Since it has been corrected, it has made the competition better and we have seen a more even playing field at the top of the section. Either way, though, you can’t blame Suffern for doing the right thing and playing at the highest level of the state tourney possible (D1). They did not force Mamk, CN, NewRo, and all the other large schools to play in a lower level than they should have.
I agree that the level of play in the CHSHL is very uneven. But, this coming season at least, the 3 local CHSHL teams (Iona, Fordham and Stepinac) would all be able to compete in the middle of League 1. None are complete enough teams(for eg, all three have very young goaltending this season and Step has real depth issues) to handle Mamo, Suffern or Pelham. But, as long as they field full teams (ie no travel conflicts), these three would play relatively evenly with WP, Rye, Pac and Jay this season and would be favored against RTH. We will probably find out soon enough about the local CHSHL teams. Fordham is scheduled to play Rye (likely without their football players) the nite before Thanksgiving. I think that is a game, not a scrimmage. Maybe RTH will draw Stepinac in the WP Thanksgiving tourney. No need to bash your CHSHL bretheren. They are better than you think.
Regarding the post about talented freshmen and sophomores playing CHSHL JV to free up ice for Jrs and Srs who may not be as talented, that is too bad. Imagine a solid travel hockey player paying tuition to spend 1/2 his HS hockey career scoring hatricks against ankebenders on a square rink in some godforsaken section of Queens. Ouch.
Just don’t go around saying you won the Section 1 championship 8 years in a row. You guys make it seem like you played games and won something. You did not win anything it was assigned to you. Those yerars should have been marked with an asterisk *
hold on
Suffern had to go in D 1 because they won the state championship in 1992. I blame the 12 or so other legitimate D 1 schools for ducking Suffern and taking the easy way and going down to D 2 to get cheap wins over much smaller schools. Every team that won D 2 championships during that year was a big school much larger than the teams they were playing in the D 2 sectionals. Only one legitmate D 2 school won a section during that 8 year span so the teams looking for the easy way out were Mamaroneck North New Rochelle Scarsdale White Plains until White Plains tried to take a shot a Suffern since they could not win a thing in the D 2 sectional
Just don’t call yourselves Section 1 Champs because you did not play any games to win it. You could have gone 0-24 and still been assigned section 1 division 1 champs. Those 8 seasons were meaningless. None of your games counted toward anything. They were all exhibition games. Your whole seasom meant nothing because you were already in states.
Suffern’s 28ish section titles are legitimate…those teams, like mamaroneck..who won a handful or so of D2 titles playing against smaller schools and programs are the ones that should have an asterisk *
EVERYONE CHOSE NOT TO PLAY SUFFERN, SUFFERN DIDNT CHOOSE NOT TO PLAY EVERYONE ELSE
I really hope you are joking “WOW” because you sound very dumb
And the teams that won the Stanley Cup when there were only 6 teams in the league should have an *, and maybe some of the Yankees World championships should be tainted, because there weren’t many teams. If it was your team that did it, you would be as proud as the Suffern people are. Give it a rest Ford Frick died years ago.
Suffern won the section 1 championship 8 years in a row
who did they beat to get there? answer…...NO ONE…it was decided before the season even began.
Would you rather have had them step down to D2 and beat everyone in those playoffs and take that route to the state tourney like everyone else? This way they would have gone through 4 rounds of playoffs with a 5-goal lead by the end of the first period in every game (including the championship). Would that have made you feel better? This way Section 1 would have had no representation at states in D1 and Suffern would have barreled through states to win a D2 title that would have been way below their playing level at the time.
You are right that they could have gone 0-24 those seasons and still won the title. Fact of the matter is that they didn’t. They were winning 80-90% of their games every year. If they were a middle of the road team with a 10-12 record, maybe you would have some semblance of a valid argument, but the fact of the matter is that no one was able to knock them off their perch, so everyone stopped trying.
Again, they did not choose to make the playoffs that way. The other D1-sized schools in the section all bowed out to make them that way.
8 Section 1 Division 1 Championships in a row (1995-2002)
PAPER CHAMPIONS
They won at least 80% of their games last year but LOST to Mamaroneck in the Section 1 title game.
Yes decided by the other teams who chose to play schools much smaller then they were, and who did not want to play suffern. Really sad that a team that chooses to play against the best possible competition is getting bashed, any person worth listening to would be bashing the other teams.
The dominance of Suffern in the sport of hockey for the last 25 years can only be compared locally to Yorktown’s lacrosse dominance in about the same time period.
Anybody who remembers the earlier part of these dynasty’s knows that the games were but a mere formality and, yes, the championship trophys could have been handed out on the first day of the season.
If it makes you feel better, than technically for many of those years their was no D1 section Championship game, unless it was a Suffern vs. Suffern scrimmage.
HAHAHAAH,
You are acting like Hiller and Hill did not get any better and are the exact same they were last year. This is certainly not the case. Them now as seniors is better then last years Salt and Ruthberg who without the help of these two would not have half the points they had. Sufferns O will be perfectly fine. You’ll see when they come out firing on pelham. 5-1
why doesnt everyone take a look outside your little section 1 championships and look at all the hs leagues around you
ip alum and former player here, have nothing to hide
yes, turnbull is going back to traditional catholic league ways…fresmen/sophs not playing varsity…obviously there are both pros and cons to it
nolan (soph) might be politically put on the roster (dad runs westchester/brewster hockey program), but not sure
between lynett, little pellow, patalano…you’ve got talented sophs probably staying back to captain and lead jv to a jv title, basically grooming them to do it again their jr and sr years…have heard rumors that turnbull might call them up midway through the season if need be…
“Please”...what is you point.
The other high school leagues around section 1 are not that good, nor have they historically been strong.
Only the Catholic league has been a little respectable. Of course this is due to Westchester schools Iona and Fordham mostly. . The section 9 league is only Monroe-Woodbury and Burke Catholic and those schools fill their schedule with section 1 teams for better competition.
NYC publics have no league, Long Island only has club leagues. Arguably you have to get to the Albany area to get a NY high school league as strong as section 1. No real Prep school leagues in the area. I don’t know enough about Connecticut hockey and maybe north Jersey is stronger than section 1.
No doubt section 1 is the strongest downstate NY league. It’s championship in D1 or D2 have real merit.
north jersey hockey is easily the best high school (not juniors, not prep/boarding school) hockey in the tri-state…schools in that gordon conference (top-10-in-the-state-conference, something ny/ct doesn’t do) like delbarton, don bosco, bergen catholic, st. peter’s prep, seton hall prep, christian brothers, etc. will kill anyone around here…
regular high schools in ct have very good teams (fairfield prep, greenwich high, etc.), but this is also prep/boarding land (before you go nuts in the mass./boston area)
bottom line – best hockey is prep in ct/mass….MAYBE a few preps/boardings in ny/nj (northwood prep, westminster, national sports academy, etc.)
Stop the trashing and predicting. These are kids who love to play hockey. Do you need to kill them for it? And to fanotgame, GET A LIFE!
I will say this Bergen Catholic a gordon conference team beat Iona 2-1 in a game last year now Iona won the CHshl last year while Bergen got beat in the new jersey quaterfinals last year so the 5th to 8th best team in new jersey beat our best ny catholic team and the the top team Delbarton would probaly beat Suffern by at least 4 lets see how Suffern does against Don Bosco [gordon team] Delbarton beat them 6-0 and 4-0 last year and they shutout Willows Mo-Beard team and beat Bergen Catholic 3 times
fanotgame,
I would put Glaser above Benincasa in the goaltending category. I also think Pac’s forwards are a little underrated, mastrocolo and perelle are both solid forwards. And also RTH’s Urban will be able to steal a couple games, even though you have them ranked last for everything.
Mamaroneck never took the easy way out they were always Division two because they were a small school and they only moved up to division one because of the massive influx of families to the area, they still are on the edge between div 1 and 2 and it was debated for them to go back down since recently the school has been recording lower class numbers each year. Don’t even try to descredit Mamk again i’ll say it they were div 2 because they were a small school, and went upto Div 1 and have been a strong program despite how many section championships they have won. Also they could ultimately go back to division two because they are so close to that line, but they obviously choose not to because they are a strong team and like the competition, if they win the section this year then they earned it and deserve it, and like-wise with suffern, only time will show come late february.
Also I really hope Mamk and Suffern get a chance to play Iona so they can stop running their mouths and everyone from the CHSHL, *by the way mamaroneck beat fordham last year having 4 players suspended (including Jackson, Conner, and Glaser), Goes to show a lot.
Glaser is by far better then Benincasa, i have played with both but don’t get me wrong benincasa is a VERY GOOD goalie. However I choose glaser, he is very strong and showed tremendous talent last year especially by only letting up 3 goals in the two games against suffern at the end of the season between the league and section championship. Also Glaser has been improving even more by playing on his Brewster team since the summer.
Sec 1 Fan- Have seen both Benincassa (Vipers 18AA) and Glaser (Bulldogs 18AA) several times this fall in travel games. Have also seen Rye’s other goalie Gibbs (Mariners 18AA) a bunch of times. Gibbs alternates with Empires Gluck and there is not much if any drop off when Gibbs plays. I have both Benincassa and Gibbs even with Glaser (Mamo fans please don’t lynch me). Mastracola and Perelle are solid skaters. Don’t see a lot of depth after that. That is why Pac forwards not ranked higher. Still, middle of League One is not really a diss. Urban one of the best forwards in the section. He has some support, but not at his speed. Just because RTH is ranked last doesn’t mean they won’t give a bunch of League One teams trouble. I suspect they will. Rye is a big rivalry game for RTH. Rankings go out the window there. As I have posted before, I expect lots of close games in League One this year, including matches involving RTH.
Is Rye playing Massena?
Not that I know of. I heard that Pelham and Rye were supposed to host CBA and Queensbury the weekend before XMas, but that CBA pulled out (Queensbury still in). I bet the Pelham and Rye coaches are looking for some other upstate team to fill the CBA slot. Massena would be great. They are a very, very good team. Maybe they want to come down to the NYC area during the holiday season, check out the tree at Rock Center, ect. and knock around a few D II teams.
Rankings:
1. Suffern- secret here is that not only will their first line be better than mamks first line, but their 2nd line of goetz, modica and jaeger will be just as good as jackson, fine and glaser. they will have 2 shut down d-men. also gabriel is a top 5 goalie in section 1.
2. Mamaroneck-mediocre offense at best. people keep emphasizing their offensive depth but its not really depth when none of the forwards are really goal scorers. their true strength is defensive depth and goaltending, which is very solid.
3. Pelham- fundamentally sound in all aspects of the game but don’t have any real superstars. goalie may be a liability though. with mamks defenseman injured, they could overtake them.
4. Rye-a little on the young side but have some very talented young forwards. goaltending is a huge plus here.
5. Mahopac- talented forwards(perelle and mastrocola), but don’t have the size and depth at any positions to beat the top 4 teams.
6. WP-lost their big guns like other teams, but they seem to only have a few people(mccarrick, altieri) to replace them. goaltending may be very suspect.
7. RTH: adam urban can win them some games but after that they dont have much. can’t even name a defenseman or goalie.
8. Jay- always undisciplined and have lost their top players of the past few years.
-north from league 2 would fit somewhere around Pelham and i think they can get better as the season progresses to compete at a level with Suff and Mamk, but, depth will ultimately prevent them from overcoming them.
Are you crazy. Mamaroneck has a much more than mediocre offense and has tremendous depth. They have 3 solid lines that can all score. No way suffern’s second line is better than jackson, fine and glaser.
with league 1. mam’k doesn’t have any scary goal scorers. Here’s a fact that may wake some of the mamk fans up:
Last year vs suffern in 3 games: Conner-
5 goals, rest of team-1. How do they plan to score on teams with the defensive capabilities of suffern and pelham?WOW you are off base. Mamaroneck was never a small school, in fact their enrollment numbers were always above Sufferns enrollment numbers. Mamaroneck chose to stay down with all the other D 1 schools in order to get an easier path to state finals. Nobody wanted to go near Suffern and at the time there were protests from legit small schools that the larger schools were running away from Suffern and invading their d 2 play off system. To blame Suffern or to cheapen what they did is wrong. Mamaroneck should be ashamed and white Plains too as both were larger than Suffern in enrollment, both White Plains and Mamaroneck had junior varsitys and enormous youth programs pumping players into the system. New Rochelle had the lightning youth teams going strong too and they also dodged Suffern and they had junior varsity too. Those three large schools ducked Suffern that is the fact and went down and overwhelmed thesmaller school play off system. Pelham took one sectional title and I believe had to beat both New Rochelle Mamaroneck and my team North Rockland and we probably did not belong their either. New Rochelle may have won once and I believe Mamaroneck took all the rest of those D 2 championships. Im no Suffern fan but lets call a spade a spade, those schools ducked and dropped until section 1 came to their senses and put them where they belong. Those schools left D 1 Suffern was always D 1, those teams left the minute they saw the loop hole
Pelham and Mamaroneck are in the Massena tournament in February
Mamaroneck and Pelham are both in Massenas tournament in February
If he plays Gibbs is as good as or better than glaser. Saw them play against each other in Mariners vs Brewster. Game ended in a 1 to 1 tie and Gibbs faced many more shots only giving up 1 goal in the last couple minutes when Brewster had a power play.
How dare you say mamk should be ashamed of themselves for playing in division 2 thats such a ridiculous thing to say when you don’t even know the reason why. Why dont you talk to the old AD and see why it took long for them to switch into division one, some people just have no class lately on the blogs.
League 1,
Although you make a lot of very good points, no offense you must be from suffern, only then would u be to put Mamk under them and then say that their 2nd line offense (which includes 2 kids who barely recorded any stats last year) is better than Mamks first line. Im not saying fine glaser and jackson (who might not even be the 1st line) are the best players in the section but each one of those players are significantly better than goetz modica and jaeger.
wrong
ahhahaa id bet anything that nolan lynett and pellow are on the varsity team. november 13th iona and suffern play. come see for yourself
Suffern Skates the River
NO class? I think the poster was stating the facts. The decision of playing in division 1 or Division 2 was up to the individual school. Suffern really had no choice they had a state division 1 championship under their belt so they were in. All the other schools that were previously Division 1 decided and moved down to the division 2 sectional play off setting. It was their choice and the reason was obvious. To get as far away as possible from Suffern and also to try to barrel into Utica by way of competing against smaller schools ill equipped to handle the larger schools. Some of the division 1 schools who dropped down were at least competitive with smaller schools like Scarsdale South and North. Mamaroneck was just like they are now a true powerhouse and an imposing opponent for the smaller schools and programs. Suffern was not happy with this arrangement either I am sure since it forced them to sit and wait two weeks before playing regionals. White Plains finally agreed to come up thinking they could get lucky in one game since they had little success in the division 2 sectionals. I agree with the other poster that Mamaroneck was looking bad in those days due to the fact that they were loaded with talent rich with players and still did not want to get anywhere near Suffern. Thats all old news now and for this season I expect both teams to battle to the end.
mcindoe is the best goalie in the section HANDS DOWN!!
Also tore his ACL during lacrosse may not be back to that amazing beast as last year i say he’ll be strong but probably only 80% of what he was last year (which is still better than most other goalies in the section)
Now that Jordan Gluck has officially gone back to Scarsdale High School and is clearly the best goalie in the section. I would not be surprised at all to see any of these teams win the section championship for Div 1:
Mamaroneck
Suffern
North
Scarsdale
White Plains
The preseason favorites are probably Suffern and Mamaroneck but I would not be surprised at all if any of the other teams pulled off an upset. I do not follow any of the teams above so I am just giving my honest opinions.
beyond Gluck and Oliviero Scarsdale is pretty weak.
As a Scarsdale fan, unfortunately I think sec1 fan is probably right. However, they will at least be able to beat some of the middle of the road teams, and maybe put a little scare into the better ones. They’ll need some of the youngsters to step up.
Scarsdale will have a very good first line and I agree that after that they don’t have much offensive or defensive players, but I don’t think anyone on this blog understands how good Gluck can be if he stands on his head anything can happen. I am not a Scarsdale fan and I do not think they are any kind of favorite, I just would not be surprised if Gluck has a great game and pulls of an upset for Scarsdale. Scarsdale seems to be very similarto North because they both have a couple good forwards and then the best goalies in the section, and haven’t people been talking about north upsetting someone.
To the comment made by hockey above me that Iona did not take a big hit this year, are you kidding me. Cody King and McCabe were there only good players. Cambria and Molinero are over-rated.
Cambria and Molinaro can play on my team anytime. Although I do agree their style of play (with a real physical edge to it) is better suited to the jr game. They get penalized a lot in tightly called HS games for boarding and pushing and shoving penalties that don’t get called in jrs. A lot of the jr players need to be mindful of this necessary adjustment.
Can’t wait for the season!!!
Does anyone know if McIndoe will definitely be on the ice at the start of the season?
I heard from a reliable source that McIndoe is ready to go for the season.
I was at the palisades last week, stopped into the rink and saw McIndoe on the ice.He looks great! Good Luck to North this year. I have a funny feeling we are going to see them in the section championship game.
fanotgame,
very accurate point regarding cambria/molinaro…see that all too often with section 1’s best players
So the goalie who started in the Scarsdale middle school then went to Iona then to Rye Country Day now is going back to Scarsdale? A bit ridiculous in my mind. If he is so good then why does he not go to a high level prep school?
He is certainly better than what they already have but I think he is not in the top 3. He does like Rye country day have many supporters who will be here telling everyone how great he is so we will see. I just think its team shopping on his part. He did not start in Scarsdale probably because he thought the program would be down and they already had a solid starter, he went to Iona probably thinking he would be on varsity and he was not then over to rye country day and I guess they are no longer good enough for him? Not sure what the story is. Whatever hes been in some superior high schools hope so his SAT scores should be off the charts.
full circle
Not sure if you know his family, but if you don’t, I’m not sure how you could presume to even guess why these moves were made. As far as the RCDS program falling, it would still be better than the one at Scarsdale. Half their games are against Div II Prep Schools, and his exposure would obviously be better than Scarsdale program. As far as why not going to top prep school, I guess you should also pose that same question to McIndoe, Glaser and Delevergne – who are probably comparable goalies. You or your parents probably have to make similar questions about education.
This is for WOW
Are you kidding with this Sec. championship garbage, who was going to be Suffern,NO ONE and the 3 yrs before last yr when CN was the so called power house in Sec1 Suffern won all 3 Section Finals but they shouldn’t count either.
You are probably from a school or district that gets pounded on regular basis especially by Suffern.
They have been the Hockey power for last 25 yrs and will continue to be for the next 25 unless everybody just gives up and waves a white flag.
Is this the same poster who’s been dogging the “scarsdale goalie” about his school selections since the Empire games?
Geez..some other high profile kids left private to return to public (Pesce and Willows), no complaining about them? It just happens for a lot of reasons.
You should be happy if your associated with the scarsdale team, and if not, why would you care. Your bitterness just reads to personal.
I am thinking it is a good question I see it as quite unusual for a student and athlete or otherwise to go to at least three high schools in four years. I guess the other players like Pesce and Willows only switched schools once right? This guy is on his third high school in three years. I think its a valid question, and someone might be interested in the motives.
Interesting that a bunch of talent has returned from the privates to the publics (Pesce, Willows, Gluck) and other serious travel players (Dzenis, Duffy, Shuman) have elected to put public HS hockey over travel. Is it because all these players have come to recognise the benefits (fans, media coverage, sense of community) of public HS hockey and the drawbacks of serious travel/prep hockey (expense of time and money and lack of fan base)?
fanotgame raises valid plusses on the draw of public high school hockey.
So Pesce and Willows attended 2 different high schools, while Gluck attended 3 different high school, a difference of 1. (I don’t quite understand the counting of middle school as a change in schools.) Lots of other more lower profile kids do this each year and of course hockey is a consideration.
All are good schools education wise and should not make much difference to college plans if the grades are there. Why not go where the hockey situation is best for you. Ideally where you can play, be on a good team, etc.
The only one who should be concerned are the other goalies, or their parents, on the Scarsdale team.
Look, I agree with axe to grind, except, who is bringing it up? If the ability of this kid wasnt blasted all over this blog all the time maybe nobody would bring it up. If a subject or a player is brought up expect it to be commented on and its fair game
To Sec 1 Fan and Lohud Fan. I have watched most of Scarsdale’s spring/fall games, and I think they will be better than most people expected coming into this season (having lost 9 seniors including both goalies) but not the top of section 1—so i agree with you. My scouting report of the team is that their first line should be able to compete with many of the other top lines in the section (Oliverio, Klein and Felix), but their second line is currently two freshman and a sophomore (who saw limited playing time last year). The third line is likely to be all freshman. Defensively, they have two returning players (senior and sophomore) who saw alot of ice time last year. Neither is very big, so that can be a problem against the more physical teams. The other 4 defensive spots are all question marks at this time, with the leading candidates likely to be freshman. Defensive depth and size will be a problem for them. The goalies (prior to Gluck) were both new (sophomore and freshman) and were playing well this spring/fall. Gluck’s arrival gives them a top flight goalie – and a hot goalie can keep you in many games. Lohud’s analysis is correct, they will go as far as the young kids can take them, since it is hard to beat the top teams on a consistent basis with just one established line and a goalie, they will need to get solid play from their freshman and sophomores.
Trust me I have nothing to do with scarsdale at all, I respect your opinions full circle, but if you think he is not even in the top three then must not have seen him play enough. I have seen Glaser, McCindoe, Gluck, Bennicasa and Delavergne play many times and Gluck is definately the best. I don’t knok why he decided to change schools, all I know is that he has a lot of talent. Everyone is saying that empires are a bad way to judge talent because the politics are so strong. Please tell me how politics caused Gluck, a kid from Scarsdale, to make a team who’s head coach is in Newburgh and had not even heard Gluck’s name until the tryouts? Glaser is a good goalie, one of the best in the section, but he was not good enough to be on the empire team. He was cut because the other goalies were better, not because of politics. Gluck clearly showed that he belonged as he was the best goalie in the tournament other than Isles who is going to get drafted. And guess what? Gluck still has another year of eligibility. Anyone can think whatever they want, but in the end Gluck is the best goalie in section 1.
ok fair enough. I do nt root against him, I wish him luck, but it was a curious situation to change so many times
Gluck,
Heard he tried to go back to Iona Prep but they said “NO”!
Whatever this kid has an incredible public relations department
Haha Iona would PAY to have Gluck play for them.
I thought this site is supposed to be people’s opinions about high school hockey in the area. It seems that we spend half our time badmouthing kids from Suffern, Mamaroneck and now the kid du jour. Most rumors about people tend to be wrong and all we do is hurt the parties involved. Why don’t we get back to a more reasonable topic that would interest more people?
most people underestimate the influence that a coach can have on his team. Many of the winning programs would be nothing without the coaches who are able to use their player’s talents and put them in the best position to win. This includes skill development, team systems, lines, etc.
Ok to GET REAL and every other inconsiderate ignorant person on this blog, leave gluck alone, you do not know the situation he was in nor is it any of your business. This is a 16 year old KID you are trying to make feel uncomfortable. So congrats GET REAL and every other joke who is blogging about this kid… really congrats you are all very important and cool people to make a family you dont know and a student you dont know, feel terrible. The funny part is any team would kill to have him as their goalie.. so chill out and find a life other than one that bashes the actions and feelings of a 16 year old.
Rather than bother talking poorly about Gluck why not ask why Klein and Gluck both left RCDS for Scarsdale? Let’s face it RCDS has a more challenging practice and game schedule. Scarsdale even with those two has much less good players and weaker games during the season.
Either way to switch this late in the school year must be a tough decision and I wish them both luck. BTW: Gluck is talented no matter what is said in spite on this blog.
If anyone is to say gluck is THE BEST goalie in section one over glaser mcindoe, benincasa then they are either from scarsdale, RCDS, or Iona it is ridiculous he is a great goalie but to say he is the best in the section is ridiculous, and especially to say that scarsdale has a chance this year. (THEY LOST TO ETB LAST YEAR AND MAMK BEAT THEM 13-1!!!!!))))
I do not support Scarsdale, in fact I do not like Scardale hockey very much. I am simply telling people on this blog that Gluck is no doubt the best goalie in the section. All those who say he isn’t have not seen him play enough and do not understand how good he is. Just watch him play a couple of times this year and you will see what I mean.
can confirm
iona shut its doors on gluck, wasn’t allowing back in..
You people don’t know what you are talking about. League rules do not allow transferring in student to play same sport as currently playing ( e.e., hockey) for one year. He would not want to go back there if he could not play. That’s ridiculous.
Glad Gluck is back.
League 2 should be a nice little competition with CN, North Rockland, ETB and now Scarsdale.
Their is nothing bad with him joining the league most of us follow. I get concerned when kids are leaving the publics for the private school hockey.
And yes, as put by a previous poster, a fair question is why did Gluck, Klein and Pesce all leave RCDS?
Gluck would not have been allowed to play for a year at Iona its a Catholic League Rule. He didnt get shut out of Iona, he didnt want to sit out.
you forgot about another player who left for another prep school. as one person once put it RCDS is the place where hockey players go to die
Maybe it has something to do with the coach, the fact that the team wasn’t very good and it lost it’s best player? Oh, sorry, I didn’t say that, did I?
What Suffern fans don’t realize yet is that they are going to be very weak in Goal. Losing Natoli to graduation is a huge loss. Their defenseman now are going to actually have to play defense and the 5 brilliant saves that Natoli used to make each game are now going to be goals.
none of these players have not gone to prep school because they have not been exposed enough to be recruited. prep schools especially the D 1 teams are not going to spend 20 grand on a kid that is gonna hold on to the puck all day. they arent looking for the kids who can skate through everyone because thats not how it works once you get to a certain level.
To Suffern- I don’t think the Mountie goalie will be “very weak”. Sure, replacing Natoli will not be easy. But, I have seen Gabriel play and would rank him as solid (not quite “top five” like League One ranks him, but solid. Behind the Section 1 frontliners (Gluck, McIndoe, Glaser, Benecasa, Gibbs, Delaverne) and similar to the next level (Parra, Felieu, Glaviano).
One more look:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuAI5QawPNc
wrong,
that is true, but there is more to the story..
Nice slide show but I am bewildered. Why show clips and photos of the Monroe-Woodbury game? Did nt you lose that one? In addition there are many pictures of Rye and Pelham are nt they division II teams? Teams you do not faceoff against in the play offs?
I have also seen Gabriel play travel this season and he is a good goalie that lacks varsity experience. He was not able to get playing time behind natoli the past 3 seasons.
Parra, Felieu, Glaviano don’t play in league 1.
Nobody said they did. fanotgame said “Section 1 frontliners.”
To coincidence- if you are looking for League 1 goalie rankings, those who have seen all of the League 1 goalies play would likely put Gabriel behind Glaser (Mamo)and Benencasa/Gibbs (both Rye), but ahead of the others. This season, a lot of the better goalies will play in the lower leagues. Could make for some upsets come playoffs.
Listen, who really cares how many schools Gluck attends. He’s an OK goalie, He’s no Reagan or Natoli. He’ll do OK in League two. Nothing special!
But if I was his parents, I would start concentrating on school because he’s not going to a D1 or D3 school. And that statement can be said also about the other goalies that fanotgame earlier mentioned. Have fun and stop this crap!
How can you say gluck is the best goalie in the section when mamo played RCDS last year they put up 8 on gluck, hmmm thats a little funny because goalies like natoli who mamo struggled to score against earned his respect. Pretty hard to get that respect when you let in 8 goals against a section powerhouse, anyway glaser is far better
What are you talking about? If you saw the RCDS-Mamo game last year at Hommocks, you would know that RCDS started their senior goalie who gave up 4 goals in first half and then soph came in and gave up 2 more for a total of 6. If you’re going to bad mouth a kid you don’t even know at least get the facts right.
Come on…..............GLuck has done nothing compared to McIndoe, Glaser, Benencasa. These goalies have been the strength of their teams for years. They have a great track record, even in travel! What has no track record. HAs he ever played for the same travel team two years in a row?????? Don’t think so. Travel teams can only deal with him for one year at a time! His success can not match the goalies mentioned above. Only thing he has done is jump from one high school to another. Guess he has his own HAT TRICK…. Three High Schools in three years. Now that’s a record that he should be proud of! LOL
To Who Cares- If we only spoke about players headed on to DI or DII careers, there would not be much action on the blog. The discussion is usually around HS hockey, not who is moving on to play varsity ice hockey in college.
I know Suffern fans will go crazy when I say this, but Gluck is just as good as Natoli for his age.
Boy, he has some PR dept. As good as Natoli was as a junior? Will this Scarsdale/Rye Country Day kid lead his team to the final four? Will he be a all state player?
coincidence, don’t worry about those goalies. The goalies in the lower leagues are more accomplished in travel then the others so it all balances out. Parra plays at the highest level of any goalie in sec.1, Delaverne is the only other one still playing AAA, Glaviano has been to nationals twice and Feliu once. I’m assuming fanotgame meant the goalies that people know when he said frontliners.
Gluck never gave up 8 against MAMO thats wrong.. hes good
Not related at all to Gluck, RCDS, Scarsdale, but have seen Gluck play in tournaments against real bona fide Jr. A players (Hitmen ring a bell??? – he was in net against a team full of them). The kid is good. And I emphasize kid (16 year old more than held his own against 20/21 year old junior players). Say what you want – the kid is good and credit is due.
To goalies I agree with you I seen Glavanio play, he may be small but he as talent. If he was in section 1 he would be the goalie to watch better than all of the above.Deleverne is also a talented goalie compatible to Glavianio if i had to chose though Glaviona would be my choice.
Club Hockey:Noticed that Salt is playing for Univesity of Michigan and King is playing for Boston College. I thought Connor was playing for Miami (Ohio), but I didn’t see his name on the roster. Does anyone know if he’s playing for another college?
Natoli did not lead his team to the final 4. He was a good goalie who was part of a good team that made it to the final 4. Gluck probably will not get all state because Scarsdale will most likely not make it that far and therefore he will lose consideration, but Gluck definately has the talent to be an all-state goalie.
have seen plenty of goalies play and heres my top
gluck
mcindoe
benincasa
glaser
gibbs
glaviano
delaverne
feliu
and yes im not a scarsdale/rcds/empires/where ever else gluck has played fan, but he is very good. and i have never seen gabriel except for a few minutes playing for the saints so i left him off.
Another strange coincidence. Is everybody here a league 1 mariner? If Gibbs doesn’t start for high school why is he in the top 5 for you and fanotgame?
Conner transfered from Miami (ohio) to Iona for personal reasons.
scarsdale vs. pelham
gluck’s first game for scarsdale
should be good
fall league semi
Coach is not putting him in game- going with regular fall team roster.
3 local high school players made the final roster for framingham states D3 hockey team this year. jake douglass (mt pleasant) mickey carroll (trinity pawling, clark north) and kevin kelley (chaminade) all survived tryouts and made the team
Gluck,
GLuck All State Goalie…...............Stop Drinking the Koolaid. What has he ever done other than go to three different High Schools. And from what I’m hearing, they were all glad that he left!
Mr. Gluck…Do us aaa a favor and stop writing about your son.
By the way,
Reggev was four times better than GLuck whrn he was a junior!
Cant be the best goalie in the section when you have no glove
goalies is right. even though he doesnt start on rye, at any other school except CN and Mamo, gibbs would be the starter hands down
gibbs would not start at Scarsdale
FAJA,
His glove is probably the best aspect of his game. I completely agree with the list that “goalies” put out finally we have someone who knows the goalies and doesn’t just say their team’s goalie is the best.
GLUCK AND KLEIN WERE NOT TOSSED OR KICKED OUT OF SCHOOL
they left on their own
get your facts right before flat out lying!
so you really no nothing… hence don’t say anything
since the season starts soon why don’t we list the “players to watch for” for the section 1 teams?
what team does glaviano play on?
Players to watch
Willows
Hiller
SHuman
Hill
Flory
Urban
Hagen
Fine
Jackson
MCindoe
Glaser
Gabriel
Way to leave out many other players, clearly favoring several teams
he clearly was not favoring teams, just outlining the good players who happen to be on the best teams, other than Marasco there really was no one left off
To Watch this,
Very clear that you are from Mamaroneck…How you can have Jackson and Fine listed as top players, That’s CRAZY! Tell me, in the past two-three years, what have they done to be considerd the best. Nothing! The only way they will make it to the top is because the Scorekeeper will take good care of them! The others mentioned (Other than Gabriel) have proven themselves. FIne and Jackson HAVE NOT!
Hey To Watch this,
How about these players: Hagen from Eastchester, Oliverio from Scarsdale, Halpin from Sleepy Hollow, Prunesti from New Rochelle, Martinetti from New Rochelle, Pesce from Eastchester, etc
Pesce is from Irvington first of all..
Emerson Duffy Mamone Dzenis Harms Lambdin Hernandez Rivera
Get Some
Jackson and Fine…..LOL
He plays for Carmel so his proving ground has been with the vipers where he Feliu and Benincasa are about the same. Last year, Glaviano and Feliu were better then any goalie we played all season, exept maybe a couple at nationals (both were less talented but alot bigger). I’ve heard them talk about how annoying high school games are cause the speed is so slow and it throws off their timing. They said it would be easier to play in league 1 because then the speed would be closer to what they are used to so they wouldn’t have to change the way they play. I don’t really understand but if high school people think Benincasa’s back-up is better then they are “hands down,” maybe they do play worse in high school.
PS- Marc is definatly the best looking goalie around (sorry Dan)
you are making things up
that is a flat out lie!
you really need to get a life
get your facts straight.. they did not get thrown out… they decided to leave
who are you?? you think you know the facts and you don’t
you are a joke just stop speaking now!
Isn’t that basically the same reason why Gluck left Iona?
I believe that Jackson and Fine deserve to be on the aforementioned “Players to Watch” list (By the way, Players to Watch does not necessarily mean “The Best Players” it just means players to keep an eye on). Jackson is coming off a bad ACL injury and fine really needs to prove himself as a star. They need to fill up some big shoes as Conner graduated last year. Many attribute the mamo sec 1 title to the exceptional play by Conner. He was clearly mamos best player last year thus Jackson and Fine will be interesting players to watch as they look to win a second straight title.
I heard the same thing from a different RCDS player. He said they were suspended and Klein decided to leave right away. Not really sure why Gluck left now though, he had been back in school for a while. I know them both and they are not racist but (more true for one then the other) their judgement isn’t the best and its a slip-up he would make.
To someone who knows
You may think you know but you don’t. Heard it from many including the kid who did it.
Anyone “to watch” from White Plains?
I hear they have a really good soph
Any returning seniors of note?
I will have another hockey-related post tomorrow. In the meantime, there’s a big group of very skilled players who have transferred. Instead of speculating about an individual’s motives, let’s just focus on what it means on the ice, or better yet get over it and talk about something else.
To White Plains and So- I think there are a bunch of players to watch for on White Plains. They lost Rui and Sigona plus a bunch of other strong support players like Goldstein. The senior forwards Altieri and McCarrick are experieced jr hockey players who will score goals. Sophomore Broderick scored a bunch against League 2 and League 3 teams. Two goals against RTH in the DI playoffs was impressive. It will be interesting to see how he does competing against League One D and goaltending thru the full season. I think WP will surprise a few teams with their defensive depth. McCandliss is solid as is RCDS transfer Klimchuck. I heard they lost one D man to prep but have another solid one. The Tiger season will likely depend on how well the goalie plays.
To coincidence- I put Rye’s Gibbs as a top 5 based on what I have seen in travel play. The Rye starter would tell you that Gibbs is very, very good. Just not a Rye coach favorite.
Jackson although undersized has good hands and a motor that won’t quit.He will be a player to watch.
Also, Flushing will finally open 11/24 for a 5:30 pm game CHSHL.
St. Anthony of Huntington is joining the league and will give Iona and Step some more challanges.
As always the Chshl 5:15pm game at Rye Playland (day after turkey day )11/28 is always a classic.
is the key to how someone will help their team win. By early January the top players will become obvious-PR in November should stick to politics, it has no place in HS hockey.

Iona Prep this year will have a strong team, fast fowards and a solid defense. Main problem will most likley be the goalie, team consists of mainly juniors and seniors, sophs that might play are nolan(f) and lynett(f), mabye little pellow(f), and patalano(d). Tim might hold these sophmores. The defense for varsity consists of murphy, mccrory, gillespe, kirinsic, traficante, and mccardle, all these players are juniors and seniors. turnbull might bring up the main sophmores thorught the year to adjust the team if needed
pelham would drop rye suffern and mamo at everything and outparty you
