Thankgiving weekend
-
- November
- 3
It’s been eight months since the high school hockey season ended in the state quarterfinals, but the skates have finally hit the ice again for the first day of practice.
Now the starting line is in sight — only 3 1/2 weeks until a blockbuster first weekend, which includes Suffern-Pelham, Iona Prep-Fordham Prep and the White Plains tournament.
Speaking of that, I listed the schedule below. Although I’m aware that some top players missed the tournament last year, it still proved to be a really accurate indicator of how teams would do:
— White Plains won the tournament, a precursor to its League 2 title, 23-win season and sectional semifinal appearance.
— Rye Town/Harrison beat Mahopac and Monroe/Woodbury, a sign that it would be a surprising force in League 1
— Mahopac tied Brewster and strugged to beat Somers/North Salem, an early indication that it would struggle the whole year.
— Stepinac was competitive against White Plains and Monroe/Woodbury and ended up in the CHSHL finals.
— League 3 Byram Hills went 0-3 and wound up struggling the whole season.
With that in mind, here’s this year’s schedule. Clarkstown North has replaced Byram Hills and has a fascinating game against Monroe/Woodbury to start the season. It’s really a wide-open tournament, and a chance for one of these teams to make a real statement to start the year. Feel free to add your predictions in the poll on the right.

Saturday, Nov. 29
Game 3/4 losers, 8 a.m.
Game 1/2 losers, 4:30 p.m.

Game 3/4 winners, 8:30 p.m.
Sunday, Nov. 30

Go Iona!!!! Defending CHSHL Champs !
BRING BACK DAN KIERNAN!
Mamaroneck plays JJCR at “The Jungle” on November 28th. That is the game to go to.
Other Thanksgiving weekend matches at Playland include Rye hosting Fordham on the Wednesday nite before Thanksgiving and the Iona vs. Forham match the Friday after Thanksgiving. These two games will be very even matches with each team having different strengths and weaknesses. Should be a very interesting early season.
fordham will be 2-0 after thanksgiving.
Harold, will you be covering the White Plains Tournament?
I think Fordham has a good team this year. Solid at all 3 positions. I look forward to the challenge my Garnets have the first 4 games (Fordham, WP, Mamo, Suffern) this season before gearing up for a stretch against the upstate teams over the holidays.
Agree,
Unfortunately I can’t tell you what I’m covering Friday, let alone in four weeks. I will certainly suggest it to my editors, though. I think we only staffed the final day last year because we were covering Iona Prep-Fordham Prep, Clarkstown North-Suffern and Mamaroneck-Pelham on the other days.
I think Mamk officially opened the section, they had practice this morning from 12-1:30 am
iona and fordham have been practicing…
....,
don’t be too quick with your fordham 2-0 comment…
Harold, Thanks for the quick response! I hope “someone” from the journal news will be there for the opening tournament!
I personally thought Fordham wouldve beaten Iona in game 1 of their playoff series last year. They went into the final two minutes with a one goal lead and Iona on their heels until a penalty changed the momentum and lead to a 2-0 win for Iona. Interested to see how a mature Fordham team compares to an Iona team that has lost King McCabe and DiMario
Fordham and Iona dont count they are in the CHSHL and all that fancy money the parents pay for tuition gives them the ability to have ice time when they want it, for us non-prep school children on hockey teams we not only start on the 3rd of november, but we take whatever ice-time available hence why mamk is known for their 5:30 am practices (ie todays 12-1:30 am).
Actually they have not been practicing they have just been having tryouts. They start on november 3rd like everyone else
Poor under privileged mamamorneck children. Should we run a fund raiser since your parents cannot afford hockey? aargh…
Fordham,
Other than their goalies, who do they have? No scoreres!I think Iona is probably the team to beat. Saw them at Mt.Vernon last week and it looks like they have three full lines that can fly!
:>},
A mature team. How can they more mature than Iona. Iona Lost a few great players but Fordham has no one that can match up to Lopez, Molinaro, Cambria, McCardle, Kirinic, Murphy, McCrory, Gillispie, Traficante, McElroy, Pellow, Geraci.
Plus you have Nolan, Chung, Lynette, Patalano.
THey have 16 travel players. Don’t think Fordham can match up!
Are teams allowed to have tryouts before the official start date. My knowledge of the dates is that any practice before the date is not mandatory, anyone can show up, and the coach cannot base any decision on play time and making the team based on it.
Why on earth would any coach want (or AD allow for that matter) a midnight to 1:30am practice on a school night? Just for some kind of “bragging” rights or something?
For a program that has its “own rink” you think they could get better practice times. 5:30am. How about right after school like any other team. For the dozens of teams that call Brewster, SportO or Ice Hutch home I understand the crazy hours…..there’s only so much ice, but who else uses Hommocks rink?
As a parent of a non-driving student-athlete I would not be pleased with Midnight to 1:30am.
Mamaroneck High School does not have their own rink Hommocks is owned by the town of mamaroneck and it is used first for public skate, and after that all the travel teams get priority over ice slots because thats where the big $$ is put up, the Varsity, JV, and Modified get whats left over, between a boys and girls travel program each having 2 teams for Mites squirts, pewees, bantams, and midgets, there is a lot of ice being used and therefore Mamk does not have crazy practices for bragging rights, they do it because thats what they get, and although it is crazy for non-driving athletes it will most likely help the team build character and strive to do better.
Just call it the way I see it Fordham was a junior heavy team last year, most of them had never played varsity. From what I saw towards the end of the year if the better players (Spillane, Massulo, Murphy, Policastro) step up, they have enough players who can play roles that can stay with Iona enough to slow them down. (FYI almost every kid on Fordham plays some form of travel)
the game will be a good one..you have junior players on both teams and it will be close…iona has one solid line while fordham has depth in all positions…people forget iona doesnt have such a solid goaltender the whole game cant be won by 3 junior playing all stars..
Does Fordham have any Defensemen? Last year their Defense revolved around McKenzie and to be honest with you, even with McKenzie thier defense was VERY weak. Who is taking over for McKenzie? Hopefully it’s not Spillane because he’s better as a forward!
Fordhams Defense: McGuiness-Brown-Rivera-Camarada.
Goalies will see a lot of shots. Fordham will be decent 500 team at the least. Number of questionable selections to fill out the roster. Two seniors cut for 2 kids better off on JV. The seniors would of helped while the JV kids will rust on the bench.
H.S. hockey practice at 5:30 in the morning and until 1:30 a.m. in the morning when school starts at 8 a.m.? What is that all about? What is more important – hockey practice or school? There is no way a student can fully be awake and concentrate at school with the lack of sleep they would be getting with those ice times. When my son played h.s. hockey and travel his travel practices were until 11:30 and he was exhausted the next day. Shame on the school district and the town. This is not years ago when there were hardly any rinks and teams had to schedule early morning practices wherever they could get it.
The Mamo midnite practice sounds a lot like what some of the big college hoops programs do on the first day to get the fans into it. Call it Midnite Madness. I wonder if a lot of fans were at the Hommocks to cheer on the start of what could be a very good Tiger season. The real question is which hockey team (girl’s field hockey or boys ice hockey) lets in the first goal of the season. Saw in the JN news that those Mamo girls have a 21 game shutout streak going.
can’t believe the hype over mamaroneck, might be one of the most overrated teams in history. Yes they have a lot of players, but only 1 is really any good and that is Glaser the goalie. The rest are second and third line players on suffern or pelham. Keep holding that chin high guys, it will make it very easy to knock you out.
Mamaroneck fans showing up at midnight before preseason? They didn’t even come to the jungle for the Suffern game last season at Hommocks lol

Should be an exciting season!!!
just so all of you know. many ncaa hockey teams all over the country run 530 or 6 am practices. so mamaroneck practicing that early really isnt that big of a deal
Mamaroneck defeats Suffern to win Section 1 Title in:
Hockey, Baseball, and now Field Hockey and they crushed them 35-0 in the regular Football season.
Hey Suffern….can you say who’s your daddy?
Really stupid grandstanding stuff by the Tigers. Circus type atmosphere practing at midnight, Attention starved already? The season just started
you just wait till this year when suffern plays mamo
Suffern 28, Mamaroneck 2 ???
Who’s YOUR Daddy?
O don’t you worry Mamk will be holding that chin high, so when it looks like the shot is open to knock them out, they will be ready to duck and then knock out the opponent , i like how everyone bashes mamo now that they are the number 1 team like suffern was last year, i get to read all these funny and outrageous claims, and these funny metaphors relating to boxing keep it going guys your hate and doubt wil only drive the team harder to beat all the teams in the section and go on to states. The only good team that will potentially stand in the way is CN, they have a talented squad and i wouldnt doubt if they upset Suffern in the sectionals considering Suffern is without a doubt the most overrated team in the section now with ppl trying to justify that without Natoli they still have state material goaltending and solid lines without ruthberg salt and conklin its funny. Keep on typing that hate people and i hope everyone shuts up once mamk starts their reign this year and embarasses this new suffern team.
28-2 welll hmmm let me see why don’t you let the other bloggers know how many uncontested titles suffern won, and how many titles they won once Mamk came into Div 1 im sure that number will drop significantly.
Also stop living in the past Suffern winning sectional titles how many years ago won’t help them win this year, its not like those older players are coming back.
predictins,
how do you have Brewster at the bottom of League 2…I think they are better
bear fan, Who do the bears have?
since mamo grew a pair and moved to the level they should have been playing at….suffern’s won 8 or 9 to 2? in the last 12-13 years
MAMO was one of the teams that MADE Suffern’s titles uncontested….they “ducked and covered”
“Also stop living in the past Suffern winning sectional titles how many years ago won’t help them win this year, its not like those older players are coming back.”
Each time suffern loses “players of the past” everyone says…such and such isnt coming back so theyre done…
and everytime, the players that would have started on other teams but waited for their chance at suffern, rose up, with “no playing time/experience prior” hits the ice in november and keeps the tradition alive
From Turco and Columbia to Block, the Daniels, Christensen, Vertullo, to Kastor, Yorke and Wynne, to Natoli, Salt Ruthberg, Ojeda, Conklin…and now to Hiller, Hill and the next crew of “unknowns”...who, after this season, youll say…well sufferns done next year without those guys…and sure as the sun will rise, there will be another group right behind them
go brag about going 1W 2L against Suffern last season…well done, congrats on the stanley cup
Suffern has no goalie this year. Don’t you realize that Natoli was 95% of your team last year?
and Natoli can really dangle! Did you see his top shelf against Greece, was on ESPN.
that is the truth Suffern, Gabriel or Rice are not even one of the top 10 goalies in the section and by far the worst in league 1. I hope Hiller and Hill can score a lot of goals, they are going to need it.
yeah, natoli had around 30 saves and netted 5 goals past glasser in the game at hommocks last season
can anyone tell me when each team has practice
One interesting part of this “Suffern not as good” debate is whether Suffern’s players will gain more incentive from being cast as something other than the favorites than Suffern’s opponents will gain in confidence from playing a team not considered invincible. Personally, I think Suffern benefits from no longer being the top gun everyone wants to knock off. But, some opponents will show up at SOR with a little more confidence this year than they may have had last season.
A lot of Suffern-Mamo hating going on. Nothing wrong with a heated rivalry. Makes the season and the head to head battles more exciting. A bunch of biased fans on each side overestimating their own talent and underestimating their opponent. Just like Suffern and North used to do. And they supplied some amazing games and amazing crowds. And it’s not just Suffern and Mamo this year who will be competing for the title. I am very interested to see what North can do with three dominant players and then a big dropoff after that.
Silly discussion.
Both programs (Suffern and Mamo) are 2 of the best section 1 has to offer. Maybe I’m wrong but Mamo and Suffern have won the last 5 straight D1 Sec1 titles. Three consecutive by Suffern with bookend wins by Mamo.
No way of knowing who is top of the heap this year. The players will decide that when they hit the ice. Don’t under estimate some of the other programs that have had success in the past. There havent been many surprises in the past but one never knows. Several “x” factors are in this year’s mix.
I put Brewster at the bottom because I think its a toss up between them and MP for last because the top 5 teams are just cleary better and I don’t think either teams got that much better
your hysterical to say there offense last year revolved around Salt and Ruthberg. I guarantee if you asked either of them theyll both tell you who the offense revolved around. And on the second line. If it wasnt for the hardworking winger and center ruthberg would not have had half the points he did. Conklin had a great point shot but his defensive abilities were slacking. Norwin and Mccarron will be perfectly fine. LETS GO SUFFERN!!
how do you think mt pleasant will do this year.
they lost a couple good players to graduation this year
fordham and iona have the same amount of junior players…its gonna be a hard fought game neither team is “Stacked”
How do you guys think the new league 3 teams will do this year? Can New Rochelle or Somers/North Salem keep up with teams like Ossining, Byram, and Pawling?
Nw Rochelle will not only keep up, but they will embarrass the rest of league 3. Is Burdick still on Pawling?
wow i cannot wait until january 10th after the game so we can hear the mamk fans shut their mouths and realize there not good. no more conner to score or handle the puck. jackson sucks. no chance against hiller and hill.
I can’t wait to get the last laugh when north upsets both suffern and mamaroneck on their way to the sectional championship
anthony policastro and mitch camadra are not junior players ! there so bad i do not know what to call them. the fordham coach is an absolute moron cutting 2 seniors but he believes it’s better for the team, we shall see november 28th.
chshl,
interesting regarding fordham’s coach cutting 2 seniors…turnbull at iona did the opposite (many question him for keeping returning lettermen, juniors from 2 years at jv, and returning seniors, rather than bringing up some of those talented sophs they have…)
The Sophs belong on the Iona JV team. Turnbull is a good judge of talent. His belief that building the JV team is important is smart especially long range. The varsity has enough talent and none of the JV players mentioned in previous posts are needed to sit the bench or get the occasional shift on the varsity level. Sorry about that parents. This blog is better when people keep their parental adgendas off it.
camadra n policastro play in the same orginization as cambria n molinaro…
It will be interesting to watch Camarda on D, because its his first year at the varsity level. Fordham and Iona are evenly matched and always play eachother very well. While Fordham has a balanced team, Iona may have more depth. What Iona lacks however, is a goalie. Look for an interesting game on Thanksgiving weekend.
Fordhams best defense is playing forward and it’s not Spillane. It’s Murphy he mite be the best in the chshl this year. Put him back on defense.
New Ro should win, but Pawling does have Burdick and now they also have Delaverne, so those games should be close. Some of the other teams have talent on offense but none of them have a good goalie.
....., very good skater – but best at what?
camadra n policastro play in the same orginization as cambria n molinaro…
Thats like saying the last two play juniors while the first two play squirts. The Apple Core junior C team is a joke and everyone but fools know it.
i went and looked and policastro and camarda play in the CHA B league not junior c
Listen, I know one of these boys and he is a great kid. Why does this board have to put players down for trying? Look in the mirror before you throw stones!
And even if I didn’t know one of these kids, it still stinks. It really isn’t nice and Harold, you should require people to register with you before posting here. Maybe it will discourage all the trashing….............
I agree Murphy is a very good defenseman judging from last year’s playoff series, where he kept the puck in the zone at one point 3 times on the same shift. However, Fordham needs scoring this year and he might be there top forward as well. Also he is no where near the best defenseman in the chshl. That belongs Matt Kirinic.
ok mister or misses policastro. with all do respect your son has no talent what so ever and needs to talk for himself instead of letting his mommy and daddy say everything for him
why would i lie?
jimmy murphy had two goals last year playing forward the entire year….. TWO
both against saint edmunds… all this chatter is useless wait until the season
to harold
when does the player to watch list come out?
New Rochelle should be playing in league 1, or league 2 at a minimum. They may get a cheapened league 3 title, because they never should have been in league 4 last year.
OMG SO TRUE.. BUT I THINK RICE IS FAR BETTER THAN GABRIEL
GOOD LUCK SUFFERN.. LOOKS LIKE YOU WILL NEED IT THIS YEAR
Good luck Suffern.. Only time will tell.. Gabriel and Rice have some tough shoes to fill.. To follow such an amazing goalie as Natoli has got to be the stress of a lifetime in itself, especially since for the past 3 years they really havent had the opportunity to play and get the experience as alot of the other goalies in the league. Look at their last years stats.. Combined ice time is only 43 minutes with 5 goal allowed and 21 saves. No stress there is there…...
can’t be too bad…the 18u AA team he plays for (ramapo saints)is in first and went 13-3-2, and it’s hard to win with a bad goalie
i think iona is better than fordham this year. iona has a huge amount of seniors and juniors. the sophs that came up are really good too. fordham has less experience than iona. everyones quick to say iona has no goalie. has anyone seen them practice? the junior returning from last year certainly improved and the jv one that came up is pretty good;hes never had the pressure of a huge crowd game but if he and last years backup can handle that than i think iona will be strong in all 3 spots.
suffern vs. iona tomorrow, first pre-season game
fordham prep won the scrimmage with N.Salem last night
Ice fan it was just a scrimmage. A chance for the coaches to see what they got out there
Yep, I realized that, but thanks for pointing it out anyway.
fordham prep also beat pelham today in a scrimmage
Good scrimmage, both teams played pretty well. FP’s defense looked good, so did Pelham’s goalie.
Lets go TITANS
