Section 1 playoff schedule — with big change
-
- November
- 4
It’s official now — the Section 1 championships will be held at a neutral site, specifically the rink at Army. I spoke to chairman John Orlando, who said he wanted to play the finals “in the best facility in the area.”It is the first change to the finals format since they were taken out of Playland in 1988 and given to the higher seed.
West Point has almost 3,000 seats, and Orlando said the finals will be treated like an Army home game, with ticket windows, a full staff of ushers and an open snack bar. Tickets will cost $10 for the doubleheader. It is also important to note that this is a one-year trial, and it will be re-evaluated after the season (in fact, if there is a scheduling conflict next year, West Point might not even be available). Still, Orlando said it was a chance “to put the sport on the map a little more” and “move into the 21st century.”
Every other sport plays its finals in one spot, so perhaps it was inevitable that this move would be made in hockey, especially after fans were turned away from both finals last year.

why is the section championship on a sunday? that makes it less exciting and will there be a dj?
10 dollars tickets a long drive for many and and games on sunday this is sure to be a bust
This is great news and long overdue. Play at the best facility around, both games in one spot. I’m marking the date on the calender already. For those of us who are just hockey fans this will be something to look forward. Never even tried to attend the finals last few years because you knew you couldn’t get into the rinks. Nice job by Section 1.
As for being “too far”——please….for all of us that have watched our kids grow up playing travel a drive over to West Point is a cake walk. And I am “east of the river”
Harold – when do league / team preview, snapshots come out on the blog?
A Joke, you obviously are not a real hockey parent or fan. If you were you would know that driving to west point for a game is nothing.
Welcome back postman… enjoy the season….. see you in West Point !!!
If you want to hold finals there, I would agree it makes sense. But, most hockey fans, HS students and others, will not travel to one of these games. They will have to charge $30.00 per person to make up for all the fans that won’t attend this year! Foolish move…........
Long overdue. This site was suggested on the blog last season. It makes too much sense.
Long drive? That is ridiculous. For hockey folks, who’ll drive 2 hours out to Long Island for a travel game on a Sunday night, this is a local trip.
Football finals are being held in Mahopac this Saturday. Not exactly a central location. Tickets are $8 per person. The place to be packed with students, parents and fans. I expect the same for hockey.
As long as the participating schools provide fan buses, the place should be pretty full. Much more so than the Frozen Four at Utica. Still, it will be hard to “pack it to the gills” like SOR and the Ice Hutch last season. The only issue would be if the participating teams were mostly from southern Westchester. As long as at least one team is from Rockland or northern Westchester, that issue should go away. A North/Suffern DI or Jay/Brewster DII final would draw very well at West Point. Not as sure about a Mamo/WP DI or Pelham/Rye DII final, though.
Looks like it makes the regular season a little less important. With first round byes for the better teams it appears that home ice will be only in play for one game the semifinal. maybe teams adjust the thinking of going all out for top seed
Great idea “home ice and seedings” I can see the pre game locker rooom discussion.. coach says “listen guys, I don’t think it really matters if we win this game or not.. lets throw this game, being top seed doesn’t help us anymore, so chris (who is 3rd string goalie) and all you 4th and 5th lines get ready. Lines one and two can go to the party you thought you would miss, man am i smart”
Re: home ice,
It is true that the No. 1 seed will no longer get home-ice advantage in the final. However, it certainly didn’t help last year (Mamaroneck over Suffern at Sport-O, Rye over Pelham at the Ice Hutch, even Massena over Mamaroneck at Hommocks).
OK $10 for a double header. BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!! How are they going to handle the locker room situation. There are only two locker rooms. If you ever played up at West Point normally you have to share a locker room with another team taht plays after your game.
Let’s just assume the following takes place.AND Let’s assume the same teams from lst years playoffs are playing again!
Game one Pelham Locker #1 vs Rye Locker #2 @ 4PM
Game two Mamaroneck Locker #1 vs Suffern #2 @ 6:30PM
Can you imagine?, when they cut the ice between the 2nd and 3rd periods and Pelham and Rye go back to their respective locker rooms, what they are going to think when the see the Mamaroneck and Suffern teams in their locker rooms getting ready for their 6:30 PM game.
I would pay the ten dollars just to see the looks on these players and coaches faces. LOL
The DI teams can watch the first 2 periods of the DII game and then get in the locker room after the DII third period has started. DII teams can’t go back to change until after the ice cut and start of DI warm ups.
Sounds messy to me!
There are more than two locker rooms at West Point. For normal youth hockey travel they only allow use of those two rooms at the end of the long hallway. But Army hockey has other locker areas in the facility. I’m sure for the section championship other arrangements will be made so that each team has their own private space. Maybe the “home ice incentive” for the higher seed will be they get to use one of the nicer rooms
The shared locker rooms at West Point are still nicer than the public locker rooms (never have seen Suffern’s private locker room) at Sport-o-rama or Ice Hutch!
WP is a showcase place for this day.
Al, to limit confusion we need to refrain from abbreviating West Point as WP. That’s already reserved for White Plains.
When the regular season and seeding and home ice advantage are not at stake I am sure coaches will play things differently. Every game is not a must win and injured players or players not up to par may be rested. Last year Rye got off to a bad start and had to go on a run to keep themselves in the hunt for home ice. Now maybe they dont` have to be al that concerned. Maybe teams like Mamaroneck and Suffern who will not see each other till the final can play it differently too. I agree that West Point is a premiere facility but it changes the urgency to home ice advantage to only one game with all the byes, and that one game is the semi final
now this is assuming C North comes in first in League 2 which I think is expected. but I would guess that Mamaroneck and suffern would not want to see cnorth in the semi’s. now the way the brackets work out. assuming suffern and mamo go 1 and 2 which is not definite the #1 seed would avoid north in the semis and the #2 seed would have to potentially play north in the semi’s and that is a very tough semifinal game that im sure neither team would want. so there is some incentive to go all out every game.
thats IF North finishes first in league 2. The one thing we know for certian is this, every league 1 team gets seeded ahead of everyone else. So unless White Plains, Mahopac, beats out Suffern or Mamaroneck its still only a one game home ice advantage, which is not much
Rye over Pelham in D2 Final for the three peat
Suffern over Mamo in D1 Final for revenge
Agreed that if I were Suffern or Mamo, I would not want to play Willows, Shuman and McIndoe in a playoff game – so its interesting that there is an incentive to finish #1 after all – very interesting.
but how will sufferns weak goaltending stop mamaronecks firepower? Oh and mamaroneck still has glaser.
mamaroneck has no firepower and gabriel is better than you think
Again for those who care….
We had some rare D. 1 club vs. NCAA D. 3 match ups lately.
Minot State ACHA D. 1 club beat NCAA UMC (Minnesota-Crookston) score 3 – 1.
Suny Canton ACHA d. 1 played 3 games. They lossed 5-0 to NCAA Worcester State 5-0, they then beat NCAA Franklin and Pierce 4-2 and beat NCAA So. New Hampshire 3-2.
All teams involved played their starters.
beyond just taking away home ice advantage west skating there is a whole other ballgame. West Points ice is 15ft wider than normal ice which completely alters the way a game is played
The whole idea of this section final in west point is so stupid, orlando really pulled one over this year, its so unfortunate that its a testing thing because it will be out the window next year and now teams like Mamk if they make the final will have to travel at least 2 hours by bus, and with the final on a sunday not enough fans are going to come defeating the purpose ofhaving the game take place in a larger location.
you are correct in your assumption that not enough fans will come plus the atmosphere will be nothing like it is at sporto, hommocks, the ice hutch, or even playland
This is a terrible idea. What make sectionals great is the atmosphere created by the student body and people within the town. By moving it to west point, you take away all that, because not as as many people will want to travel that far. Besides the sectional games last year seemed pretty even when it came to fans, mamaroneck fans took up about 1/3 to 1/2 of the stands at sporto in the sectional game. We are not makeing the site any more neutral by moving to west point.
Change it back to the way it was!!!!!
The finals should be played in a nice building that represents the sport and a championship well. Fans will certainly show up. If you are willing to drive to sporto or the ice hutch, people will show up. Most would rather see a game at west point than at any of those other buildings. A venue fitting of a championship. It seems to work for other sports!
Just curious. All those years SOR was the best facility around. What a slap in the face to Suffern fans, HS hockey fans. This year West Point becomes the Premiere facility. Why not 5 or 10 years ago? What changed? Someone spending a lot of time at West Point for those Bear Mountain Midget games? SOR is not good enough anymore? Wonder why? Even a knuckle head like me thinks this smells fishy.
Hey but,
What fire power? Just because they might have three lines, doesn’t mean that they are going to score. You lost Connor, who was the Man for two years. From what I’m reading in the blogs, you have two skaters (Fine and Jackson), who really don’t have a good track record as a player who is going to dominate. So until the season starts, I would have to assume that Mamaroneck really doesn’t have the fire power to put up many goals! But this is just my opinion!
Its stupid to have them up at West Point. It’s not even in section 1! Not all of us are nuts hockey parents who travel 3 hours for games regularly.
acha,
great news. even more so, minnesota-crookston, franklin pierce and southern new hampshire are actually D2 programs, but play a D3 schedule. not sure if that means anything…
I think if a team has the best record and is the highest seed the perk is that you get to play meaningful games at home. As a fan I think that if I go to all my favorite teams homes games all year I should not get shut out in the biggest game of the season if my team makes it to the finals
In hockey NCAA D. 2 and D. 3 are the same thing. The only reason the schools call them differently is because all of the other schools teams might be D. 2 (basketball, football, etc.)..........This is also one of the reasons the ACHA D. 1 teams can’t join a NCAA D. 3 league. You can’t have a D. 1 football team and a D. 3 hockey team.
As I read through the comments, with every post, people are putting West Point further & further away. The last person had it now at 3 hours. If the games were going to be three hours away, we may as well play them at the Knickerbocker Arena in Albany (The Pepsi Arena for those of you young’ns and the Times Union Arena for those of you that are even younger).
According to google maps, the four teams that we figure would be playing in the finals, are all within an hour of West Point. Suffern is about 40 minutes away and Pelhem, Rye, & Mamk are all about an hour. By contrast, the drive from Suffern to Larchmont and the drive from Mamaroneck to Monsey are each about 40 minutes. So we are talking at most a 20-minute longer drive.
No, it is not in Section 1 technically, but it is pretty much right on the border. In fact, Lakeland/Panas played their home games there a couple of years ago. You want to play games in a section 1 rink, then remember this, Poughkeepsie is in Section 1, and I’m sure they could book the mid-hudson civic center. Would that make anyone happier? No, all it’ll do is make everyone drive an extra half hour.
As for home ice advantage, so what if it’s only for one game? It’s not like Suffern & Mamk (assuming they finish 1 & 2) are going to have to go on the road to someone else’s home game. When you worry about a team that will only have home ice for one game, you worry about teams like CN, ETB, North Rockland, & Scarsdale, of which three will have a first round home game and then go on the road for the next round (one of them will be the 9 seed and will have no home games). Then its a big deal. If you have one home game, then go to a neutral site, its not the same. Not having home ice in a game is bad only when the other team DOES have home ice in the game.
West Point=Great idea
Well written Lohud, and I really can’t believe these are real hockey people complaining about the drive. This is what hockey families do, we drive far away, play a game for an hour and a half and drive back. During travel season if a game is under an hour and a half away, I am happy.
No problem with us making the drive Postman. All the students won’t though. But, who knows. Maybe you are right. Maybe tons of fans will flock to West Point, unlike the travel games where the kids play in front of their parents.
To ACHA
For ACHA
Great info on the club teams, and not to put a damper on what a team like Canton is trying to do but those so called D3 teams they played are really not great comp.and dont win to much at the D3 level.
More info on some club hockey, Wagner College was just ranked 1st in the southeast with a 12-1 record with only loss to last yrs National Champ Davenport U, this team also has a former Sec.1 player from Suffern on it if I am not mistaken.
Keep ACHA info coming thanks
I wouldn’t underestimate how far the students will drive for the game. SOR holds about 900 people and the stands were roughly 50-50 last year for the D1 finals. So figure out of the roughly 450 Mamk fans there, about 400 of them were students (This is not including those who watched from the outside thru the glass & those that didn’t bother to even try to go because the place was sold out well before game-time). They all showed up at SOR for a 7:30 Monday Night game. Yes, West Point is 20 minutes further, but the game is now a 6:30 Sunday game. So assuming it takes just as long to complete, they will still be home about 40 minutes earlier in time to rest up for school the next day. Plus, for the price of admission, they would get to see the D2 finals which is usually a very good, evenly matched game between Rye & Pelham.
acha,
good point
however, you can have d2/3 athletics and have d1 hockey (denver u., colorado college, lake superior st., st. cloud st., umass-lowell, minnesota-duluth, minnesota st., st. lawrence, union, rpi, bemidji st., alabama-huntsville, nebraska-omaha, ferris st., northern michigan, michigan tech, etc.)
Saw Iona’s Cody King is leading scorer on BC’s club hockey team. Also, New Ro’s Eli Bernstein is the scoring leader for Northwestern’s club team. Cody’s brother Casey and Suffern’s Zach Salt getting game time for Michigan’s club hockey team.
Thank goodness LoHud and postman are back so we can have some sanity on this discussion. West Point is a GREAT idea and long overdue. Everyone seems to be forgetting that you can now see both D1 and D2 finals together. So you’ll have 4 teams worth of fans/parents/supporters as well as the rest of the section 1 hockey world that in the past had to choose which one to go to or more likely didn’t got to either since they couldn’t get in the building due to the smaller seating (and dare I say it – bathroom) capacity. Every other sport does it and it’s not an issue. Field hockey at Lakeland, Football at Mahopac, Basketball at County Center etc.. I don’t get why anyone would think it’s a bad idea. And home ice advantage is really only about last change, which higher seed will have. The fans as has been noted in recent years have been fairly evenly split at the final games.
is my memory off or do I remember people on here the last few years complaining about how SOR was a dump, the other rinks were too small and we should have the championship game at a nice arena, one that was big enough and one that was also a neutral site? this whole freedom of speech thing we have in this country really needs to be addressed. One should have to pass some sort of test in order to speak their mind.
uh, postman—- that would be SOR is a dump, not was a dump. But other than that your memory ia AOK
LOL…hey they put in a flat screen tv to show the rink schedule, its a start…
that’s okay Brewster is also a dump, but no flat screen and SOR has a 20+ year head start on it. Brewster did put in new rubber mats throughout and hot air blowers in the bathrooms though—- so they are ready for the big high school crowds !!!
I don’t mind the West Point venue for the Championship games, but I don’t like having the Finals on a Sunday night. I believe last year, the Finals were on Thursday night (D1) and Friday night (D2). I believe that is more ideal to have it on a schoolday because all the students would be reminded to go to the game that night. Students may (or may not) forget that their team in playing come Sunday.
I’ll bet dinner at Sutter’s that the finals at West Point won’t compare to the atmoshere at SOR the last few years. Now instead of the lines waiting to get into the rink, talking with friends, we will all be sitting in our cars waiting for security to check us through at the gates at West Point. Better get there really early. Otherwise, you may miss the first period.
BTW, can we stop with the club hockey updates. Otherwise, I will start posting summaries of my daughter’s rec league soccer games. Please, enough already.
Mimi, Denver and Colorodo are definietly D. 1 schools. I think the Michigans and Minnosota schools are too. But you are correct on Bemijidi, Lowell, A-Huntsville, and Nebraska Ohmaha. These 4 schools are the exception. And, all 4 of these schools had to petition for years to be D.1. Alabama Huntsville was destroying D. 3 schools for 2 or 3 consecutive years and once they put in a D. 1 size rink they won their appeal. Bemijidi was sending guys to the NHL as a D. 2/3 school, Lowell was independent, and it just made too much sense not to have them in Hockey East, and Nebraska-Ohmaha had incredible Junior hockey all around them, it was an easy transition.
Also D. 2 club Wagner is on a whole other level, forget club hockey they would probably destroy Canton and the 3 NCAA D. 3 teams they played. they got a guy there who was arguably the best player on the NJ hitmen Jr. A team last year, who has no business being in that league. They have also taken advantage of the age limit lift, eligibility rules are mostly based on credits taken, and years played now. They have a few guys in there late 20’s.
Old school, I am sure the soccer blog would love to hear about your daughter, or college soccer updates
West Point, I am going to assume you don’t have a HS age kid or pay little attention to what they do all day. If you did, you would know that they text each other constantly, It is not like when we were young and you lost touch with many people over the weekend (if you did’t want to pick up the phone hanging on the wall in your kitchen) . Within 10 seconds 300 kids will be reminded.. you are showing your age.. ha ha
and anyone who cares – FYI – this was a great experience for Canton this weekend. Of course, the first game was played after a very long (about 8 hours) bus ride. It was great hockey. Besides the 2 North boys playing on Canton, another local boy, Coursen Schneider from Stony Point, is one of the major players for Franklin Pierce. He played 3 years at North Rockland H.S. before doing his last year at Avon Old Farms.
fanotgame,
Wow that’s great news about Salt and the King Boy’s.
fanotgame,
Wow that’s great news about Salt and the King Boy’s.
I heard that New York State High School Hockey is considering changing the state playoff system to become one based soley on size of enrollment (like almost all the other HS sports), instead of leaving it to each Section to determine who is DI and DII. The last two DII state champs were large, regional high schools (‘07 MW and ‘08 Syracuse’s Webster Thomas). If the state were to break it up into more than 2 classes (LAX has 3), teams like Mamo might find themselves in the middle class not fighting it out with the big boys (enrollment size). Schools like Rye and Pelham would benefit from competing against schools more their size (both in the Section and at state Regionals and beyond).
Some more information on West Point, courtesy of Section 1 (and former Section 9) chairman John Orlando:
This won’t be the first sectional final at Army. Section 9 held its championship there in 1978 when Clarkstown South faced Suffern. The next week, Suffern faced Rye at Army in the Section 1/Section 9 regional championship game.
Also, the idea was agreed to at an athletic director’s meeting in the spring, and approved by the Executive Director of BOCES Athletics. 29 teams were involved representing 43 high schools.
I wasnt saying it was 3 hours away. I realize its around an hour. I was just saying I wasnt one of those hockey parents who travels long distances (I used 3 hours) regularly.
one, lets stop the player bashing and saying how west point is gonna be a s***show. second, and most importantly STOP talking about how anyone is going to the NHL even near the NHL because most of you except for the rare exception knows what it requires to get to that level.
chshl website posted the 1st couple of weeks of games
http://www.chshl.net
Harold- when will you have the team and league previews for us?
yup just posted the first few weeks. No ice cuts in between periods, play the same teams four times no home ice, and the season starts in a few weeks and the complete schedule cannot be found
NUTS.. can you please show me one place where it was written that someone was going to the NHL, or even D1 college? The Daniels twins are the only ones with a shot (and I repeat shot) at going to the NHL. Other then that, I don’t understand your comment. Maybe you are the one whos nuts..
I agree with the Postman. I have read these posts for years. Maybe someone says a kid will play college hockey. No one is going to the NHL that plays HS hockey around here for 4 years. Daniels, Shattenkirk Clare all left for much more competitive hockey. I talked to someone who plays in the San Jose Organization and skated with the Daniels brothers this summer. They have a extremely long way to go. Not a mean statement but it puts things in perspective. This is a local HS hockey blog and nothing more. Nothing wrong with that, it makes for good reading sometime.
It still amazes me the ability of the players in the NHL compared to everyone else. Hockey is such a specialized skill… YOu can go to any basketball court in any major city and find someone that could hold their own in the NBA, or NFL for that matter, but the difference between an NHL guy and the top kids in NY isn’t even close. It is kind of like golf and baseball. You can be an incedible HS or even college player and not even come close to playing AA minor baseball… or be the college national champ in golf and might never get your PGA card.
Another problem with looking towards college hockey is that this sport is unusual in that all of the top college teams stack half of their rosters with foreign players. It you look at other college sports rosters I bet you don’t find half the kids from Canada, Russia, Sweden, etc. Therefore, besides the incredible talent you need, you also have a world full of competition.
This is ridiculous. I think Orlando knows that Mamk will most likely be the #1 seed and does not want to see his Suffern faithful have to come all the way to the Hommocks to play the championship game. West Point is NOT EVEN located in Section 1!!!! How dumb is this? IF there is one place to hold the championship games, it should be Playland, which can also hold almost 3000 people and is home to a D3 college team. Gas up your cars Mamaroneck and Pelham and Rye fans, because it looks like you will all have to travel to another section of the state to play a Home Championship game. THis is a totally biased decision, and if decisions are going to be made in this fashion and the AD’s are afraid to speak up, then it is time for new leadership. Why don’t we just have the championship games played in New Jersey or Connecticut. ABSURD.
WIth the economy in shambles that is exactly what everyone needs, a long trip for a 90 minute game. Do you really think Westchester kids are going to make this trip? Is it really fair to beg school systems to provide for a FAN BUS? THis decision was made because West Point is located much closer to Suffern than any other School. Especially the best Section 1 schools like Pelham, Rye and Mamaroneck.
How about this as a proposal. IF Suffern is the #1 seed, we have the game at West Point. IF Mamaroneck is the #1 seed then have the championship played at Playland. Make Suffern get a fan bus and travel.
A quick look at Hockey East shows that only 25% of the players are foriegn born-Canandian or Foriegn.
I am very upset. As a Nyack/Rockland County football fan I have to travel this Saturday all the way to Mahopac, in Westchester, for the Championship game. This is very unfair since the other team, Ossining, is much closer to Mahopac.
I am thinking of not going because of the distance.
Boo hoo! Wah wah!!
IT IS TIME FOR CHANGE.. DO I HEAR OBAMA FOR SECTION 1 COORDINATOR!!!!!
Playland is not a neutral site either. It is home to Rye. So what you are saying is that in the D2 final Pelaham being the higher seed and having a home game against Rye at Playland is fairer than it being at West Point? If you want a truly neutral site and you insist on it being in Section 1, then lobby to have it at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center up in Poughkeepsie. No one calls that home, it’s got a big seating capacity, and it is in Section 1. Problem is, that’s a half hour further away from anyone in the section than West Point is, except for maybe Pawling.
The fact that it is in Section 9 is irrelevant. It is right on the border of Section 1. It is right up Rte 9W from teams like North Rockland & the Clarkstowns and right over the Bear Mtn Bridge from teams like Yorktown, Mahopac, or Lakeland/Panas. Everyone else is a little further. And don’t kid yourself about the proximity of Suffern to West Point. Just because they are on the same side of the Hudson River as each other doesn’t make them close. It is still a 40 minute drive to get to West Point from Suffern.
And not that it pertains a ton to this discussion, but “What is best for Suffern” sarcastically brought up playing the games in NJ. What he/she may not realize is that that’s not actually too bad of an idea. If all of section 1 were west of the river, I’m sure places in NJ would be considered just like if all of section 1 were east of the river, I’m sure places in CT would be considered. If you can find the right venue, then go with it. There are about 6-7 NJ High Schools that play their home games out of SOR, meaning that in the early rounds of the state playoff, there are NJ State Playoff games held in Monsey NY.
Why loose home ice advantage in the finals? Why the change now? Someone trying to “stick it” to SOR? Or maybe just the owner and director? This would have NEVER taken place under the previous director…
OldSchool you hit on it. The selection of West Point is the result of a personal vendetta against the rink owners and directors of the local rinks.
The stated reason, West Point’s seating capacity allowing both Championship games to be played back-to-back accomodating all fans, is obviously a very clever cover story.
At least to this knucklehead, this seems pretty obvious. And if I can figure it out…it must be pretty obvious. LOL
OldSchool.. while some of what your thinking may have, if not a bit of the truth, some rationale. However, the West Point venue trumps SOR, Homocks, Ice Hutch. This is a good decision by the Section Coordinator and approved by the AD’s.
I look forward to those games.
Fanotgame mentioned the possibility of splitting the state into three divisions (which is what field hockey and boys and girls lacrosse use). However, I’m told that hockey cannot go to three classes because you need a certain number of teams in the state, and hockey is about 30-40 short of that requirement.
I do know that having a specific cutoff number for Division I and Division II is being discussed, along with some other options. Whatever is decided, it would have to be approved by the state hockey committee, and then the NYSPHSAA. For all that to happen, the earliest a change can be made is 2009-10.
How quickly we forget…
Over the last 2 seasons, the Clarkstown North fans/parents practically begged for the finals to be played at West Point…
Now, it actually is, and everyone goes nuts?
Don’t get me wrong, I think it should be a home ice thing, but jeez..there’s no pleasing anyone
Who was the most vocal opponent to that suggestion? Who argued that the dump of a rink at the mall was okay to have a league game but not for playoff hockey because it was dangerous? Yep, seems pretty clear.
All the Mamoroneck folks whining about West Point is almost enough to turn me into a Suffern fan for crying out loud. How’s this. Play the games. Show up where they tell you. And then if you win you can brag about how you had to overcome the 47 hour trip to West Point. Yeesh.
Why not the Garden. It has enough seats, easy to get to and is available to rent. Fordham plays Farrell there 11/30. If CHSHL can do it why can’t public strike a deal.
Harold, thanks for the clarification. I didn’t think any change would be implemented this coming season. In this economy, it is not likely 30 more NY Public High Schools will field boys ice hockey teams. So, with a two division system, any max enrollment rule likely would not change things within our section all that much, unless, of course, Mamo and Suffern were split up. Possibly some of the smaller DI schools would be moved to DII or larger DII to DI. ( Mamo, South or Scarsdale to DII or Yorktown or Jay to DI). What it would end is the abilty for a large regional school to play DII. If Mamo were to move down and battle Pelham and Rye, Suffern would need to focus on the other Tigers (WP) for sectional supremacy.
I don’t think Suffern & Mamk would be split up if there was a statewide line (depending on how they do it). If they take some arbitrary number and draw a line, who knows where it will be. If they take the roughly 125 teams in the state and draw a line down the middle, they should be together.
I looked up enrollment numbers across the state and pared it down to only those schools that have hockey, combining the mergers to create the overall enrollment numbers for them (It was a REALLY slow day at work today). There were about a dozen teams I couldn’t find enrollment numbers for, probably because they are mergers in other sections and I don’t know what schools make up the merger. So if the line was drawn down the middle for the teams I did have enrollment numbers for, the line for the state would oddly enough be drawn between Clarkstown South at 1,098 and Scarsdale at 1,096. Depending on where those dozen other teams fall, the line could shift up 6 teams (Putting the line between Mamaroneck at 1,127 and Section 5’s Geneva/Waterloo at 1,125 and moving SHI & CS into D2), it could shift down 6 teams (Putting the line between Ossining at 1,001 and Fox Lane at 999 and moving Scarsdale, HG, SNS, & Ossining into D1) or anywhere in between. Assuming all the schools I couldn’t get enrollment on are merged teams, they would probably be larger, meaning the line would most likely shift down, and since moving down 6 teams would put the line at 1000, I would guess that’s where it would be (even if they pick an arbitrary number). If the line were at 1000, our section would have nine D2 teams (FL, KPV, JJ, Brewster, Pawling, PR, BH, Rye, & Pelham) and the other 19 teams would all be D1.
thats a terrible idea to play at msg. how empty do you want the venue to look?
to harold
when does the player to watch list come out in the news paper
lohud,
I guess the answer is Never. Talent has really done down hill ovewr the past few years! No Daniels, Connor’s, Wynnes, Capalbo’s, Salt’s, Tozzo’s! Now you got Fines and Jackson’s…...LOL
MSG would actually be an amazing venue, im sure if kids have the option of taking a train to the city maybe even for the day and seeing their fellow schoolmates play a section final there at night, many more students and parents would come as opposed to West Point. (For the lower westchester teams it would be much closer ie. Rye pelham, new rochelle, Mamk,)
Harold i think you are wrong. The quarterfinal game for div 1 is section 1 at section 10… almost positive will be heading upstate
lohud,
The winter sports preview won’t come out until the fall sports are done, which is usually Thanksgiving weekend because of football.
I will start putting team preview capsules up before then, but not for another 10 days or so
I think Mistake is right, I heard this year regionals will be at section 10 aka if Massena wins their section its going to be a long trip.
Heres some players to watch in each league in my eyes
L1-Hiller,Hill,Hagen,Fine,Glaser
L2-Willows-Hagen-O’Conner-Olivero-Shuman
L3-Burdick-DeLavergne-Marasco-Prunesti-Martinetti
L4-Pesce-Halpin-Glaviano-goalies from PearlRiver and Greeley
I’m sure there are players I missed so don’t get mad at me bloggers just make your own list
MSG would be amazing!!! the players would absolutly love to play there. and for teams and fans that are far away, they would be more motivated to attend the game if it were at MSG
Regionals rotate every yr, year before last both Sec1 D1/D2 teams went up north as well.
faced off tonight on News 12 the challenge, an academic show. Kind of embarrissing, it was the lowest scorin first round. Iona got five questions right, Stepinac got 0, and both missed or did not answer 10 questions.
who cares this isnt a high school blog its a high school hockey blog
They looked real weak on that show. Real weak, lots of wrong answers, no answers, save your money and stay in public school
the ice at msg is so soft and slow. playing there would be terrible

mistake is right. Section 1 AT Section 10. Only a 7 hour, 400 mile difference.
iona’s non-league opponents include suffern twice (both at sport-o-rama, 1 scrimmage, 1 game)....burke catholic twice (home and home)....pelham (scrimmage)....monroe-woodbury at ice hutch….at rcds….at harvey….league schedule consists playing 5 opponents from the A division 3x each…fordham, stepinac, st. anthony’s, farrell and chaminade
their jv has its dose of non-league games as well…mamaroneck home and home…burke catholic home and home…danbury immaculate at ice hutch…league schedule consists playing 7 opponents in jv division 2x each…fordham, stepinac, st. anthony’s, farrell, chaminade, st. joseph by-the-sea and st. peter’s
to msg? yea your right the pros play on it but its probably not suitable for high school players. Are you crazy?
to what?
Why would it be not suitable for high school players? Why is that crazy?
he was being sarcastic and agreeing that its a good venue
Congratulations to Coach Orlando and all those associated with getting West Point. This is a move that should be welcomed and embraced. I bet every kid who plays hockey in Section 1 has played at Tate more than once and they will all say its the best place around to play. As a parent, there was no better thrill to watch the boys play at WP. Parking is fine, forget those post 9/11 lines, not anymore.
Remember, baseketball has their sectionals at the White Plains County Center and that place is packed for each game and they play games on Sundays as well.
To those who think the Sect 1 admin have is planed on Mamaroneck being the #1 seed, I bet Chappy would be the 1st one to vote on Tate as well. They will be packed. And $10 isnt going to stop anyone.
GREAT JOB!

Saturday nite Glaser (Brewster U18AA) vs. Gluck (Mariner U18 AA) up at Brewster rink. In the 2-2 tie both goalies looked strong, with Gluck robbing Brewster late on a dive to cover open net to preserve tie. Mamo’s Jackson had a nice shorthanded goal for Brewster and Pawling’s Burdick the same for the Mariners.
i’m sorry, can you tell me what teams will qualify for the playoffs at west point. (new to all this)
To help. New York State Public High School’s Section 1 (Westchester, Rockland and parts of Dutchess and Putnam counties) will hold its Division I and Divison II boys ice hockey finals at West Point in early March. Section 1 has 29 boys ice hockey teams. 16 will vie for the Divison I (bigger schools) trophy and 13 will battle for the Division II (smaller schools) trophy. The pre season DI favorites might include Mamaroneck, Suffern, White Plains, Clarkstown North, Mahopac, New Rochelle, Scarsdale, ect. while the DII favorites might include Pelham, Rye, John Jay, Pawling, Ossining, Somers/North Salem, Brewester, Yorktown, ect. The teams do not play in DI and DII divisions during the regular season. They play in leagues one thru four based on a pre season determination of team strength, with league one being the “power league”. Playoff seedings are determined by regular season records. No team from a lower league can be seeded higher than a team from the higher league, no matter how a team fares during the regular season.
help-
Assuming it is the way it has been in previous seasons (where teams had to qualify for the playoffs), here is the formula:
There are three ways to qualify for sectionals — overall record (League 2 must win 35 percent of its games, League 3 must win 40 percent, League 4 must win 45 percent) OR teams must win 50 percent of its games against division opponents OR Division 2 teams can win 50 percent of games against Division 1 and Division 2 opponents combined.
If your head is spinning, don’t worry, most people’s are after reading this. Figure on it this way. Everyone in League 1 makes the playoffs. A League 2 team would need about 8 wins, a League 3 team about 9 wins and a League 4 team about 10 wins in order to qualify (give or take depending on how many games on their schedule during the regular season).
If they can’t reach those win plateaus, then a .500 record within your league will do the trick. So if a league 3 team, for example, goes 7-14 on the season, but all 7 wins come against other league 3 teams in league games, they would be in because they would be 7-5 against their league.
The third way in, I have never understood since it says that a D2 team can make it by going .500 against D1 & D2 teams combined, but since everyone is either D1 or D2, then that would mean they would have to have at least a .500 record on the season (and even a League 4 team would qualify at a .450 winning percentage).
Only the section championships will be played at West Point, not the entire playoffs, so who qualifies for those games depends on how the regular season & playoffs go, but smart money would be on Rye/Pelham in the D2 final and Suffern/Mamaroneck in the D1 final. Of course there’s always the chance for an upset so one or more of those four may not be there, but most likely those are your West Point teams this year.
I know all league 1 teams qualify and only some of lower leagues. Does anyone know who qualifies in lower? Based upon % games won, etc.
No idea why ANY league 2, 3, 4 teams should qualify for Division 1 playoffs. League 2, 3, 4 games are a joke and just painful to watch. I’m sorry, but teams made up of high school age kids that can’t skate are an embarrassment.
Why wouldn’t they be in the playoffs? Last year, we had a league 4 team (Sleepy Hollow/Irvington) beat a league 1 Team (CN) in the first round, and a league 2 team (WP) beat a league 1 team (RTH) in the quarterfinals.
For Division 1 large school playoffs, the League 4 playoff teams of New Rochelle and Sleepy Hollow/Irvington were very respectable, as were North Rockland and ETB in league 3. Honestly the league 2, D1 playoff team Mt. Pleasant and Scarsdale were not as good (White Plains of League 2 was of course a very good team.)
As far as D2 the league 4 representarives of Somers and Pearl River were also respectable in the snaller schools division.
The power league set-up, while not perfect, does a darn good job of allowing teams a “competitive” season against similar skilled teams, and also making sure the teams with the toughest schedules get easier accesss to playoffs. Remarkably it works most of the time.
The power league setup works very well. Allows for close games most of the time. It really benefits the DII teams who challenge themselves by playing up. 2 of the last 3 DII Sectional champs have made it to Utica.
league 2 hockey is very competitve and all the teams can skate, you never know what teams can suprise you and step up and take on a higher level team, as lohud said L4 sh/I beat L1 cn last year
the section finals should be at the rink of the higher seed…having it at west point would be a waste because no high school student would want to pay $10 to watch a hockey game, and they also wouldnt want to have to deal with the hassle of getting into west point, because of this the rink would look even emptier then it really is because there are less people then usual in a larger rink then usual…this idea doesnt make any sense for the players who love playing in front of 1000 people in a packed house on a friday night…this idea is garbage
Went to Stepinac’s web site. It only lists around 12 players on the varsity roster. How can they compete with only 12. Is the roster list not updated? Also noticed that their JV only has like 7 skaters. Is their program in trouble? How can Fordham’s and Iona programs be so strong versus Stepinac’s? What’s going on?
It’s going to be a tough year for Stepinac this year. Last years loss to Iona really killed us. In my opinion, if we had won, our team would of been well positioned for this year. I think we would of had more hockey players come to Stepinac but it looks like many of the Hockey players who were looking at Fordham, Iona and Stepinac are going to Iona.
We lost alot with Reagan leaving. WE definitely will not be as competitive as we have been the past 5 years. Last years loss to Iona “REALLY HURT”. Last year was our year, but we couldn’t finish the job. That Cambria and King combination was a killer. Only time will tell…..
It’s going to be tough. Will find out about Stepinac real fast. I think they open up against St.Anthony’s. Who won the States last year. Good Luck!!!!!!!
to lohud (Why wouldn’t they be in the playoffs? Last year, we had a league 4 team (Sleepy Hollow/Irvington) beat a league 1 Team (CN) in the first round, and a league 2 team (WP) beat a league 1 team (RTH) in the quarterfinals.)
1. CN was horrible last year. They had the goalie and nothing else. They had no business being in League 1 w/o Shuman and Willows.
2. Anybody could have beaten RTH after they lost Urban for the season with a broken arm in the Mamo game
Speaking of CN, I’m a bit baffled by all the posts putting Willows above Shuman. Anybody whose played with and against these two for years knows that Shuman in the real skater and playmaker.
Normal,
Get real!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shuman can’t even come close to Willows talents. Plus the fact, he has NO Character! Not after turning his back on his teammates last year. Tell me ….. What has Shuman ever accomplished… Willows list is a mile long.
I agree with Stepinac Blogger. Losing to Iona last year KILLED our program.
Suffern vs Iona and Pelham vs New Rochelle this week any thoughts on the outcome of these games
Too bad your name isn’t “abnormal”. Guess you never saw them play together. Shuman looks good because of Willows.
Suffern will go undefeated this year in the league. The first line of Hiller, Hill, and jeager will be the best line in the league, and score a minumum of 3 gaol a game. Norwin and McCarron will play out of the skates on defense. The second line of Modica,Sanchez and Baker will score at leat 2 goals a game. The second line defense of Byrnes and Fuchs will step up and get the job done.
im sick of hearing about suffern and mamo.
Dear Normal,
You are either a foolish adult, a wiseguy teenager trying to rile up L2 players and fans, or you should not be on the internet without your mommy knowing about it. Why don’t you let us know which it is. You obviously either have an agenda or have no facts. There are a number of top players from this area who are on L2 & L3 teams that are as good as any in L1, they just happen to go to L2/3 schools, since when does the level of league dictate conclusively your talent level (hopefully that question was not over your head)? I know of at least one L2 team that has 5 players from nationally ranked AAA teams, and 3 players from nationally ranked AA teams, and they may not even win that league. I assure you they can skate/play better than you gretsky. Now if you are that foolish adult you should retract your statement, if you are under 5 yrs old, please let your mommy know what you are up to and if you are a wiseguy teenager with an agenda, we will just have to ignore your statements. To all who have replied in a similar manner prior to this post, I suggest we ignore and see if he/ahe goes away!
Normal,
I dont think that you can say that anybody could have beaten RTH after Urban went down. They still played some pretty good hockey..
and WP should have been in League 1 all year but chose to be League 2 last year as we have established on the blog. The power league rewards teams for playing a tougher schedule all year, not just in the playoffs.
As far as Willows and Schuman go, I have seen them both play, and I think they both compliment each other. they work very well together. What you dont seem to understand is that every player on a team should have a role. they both know their role! it doesnt need to be debated on whose better, who cares!?
The stepinac fans thought last year was there year. They did not even have a good team. They would have never won without reagan in net and datino scoring timely goals. I dont understand how it killed the program when the past years before that they did not even make the playoffs and last year they lost in the finals in game 3 in OT. explain to me how it is killed
Willows is better than Shuman.
It killed the team because if they were going to win it was going to be last year. Stepinac got “KILLED” through Graduation. I thing they lost 12 players.
That coupled with the fact that Iona and Fordham both won e championships the past few years hurt also them. And if you look at their current roster, it really looks like they have very few players to play the season versus Fordham and Iona who are twenty five strong!
They had a good team as long as Reagan was in the net.
I agree! Stepinac didn’t have a good team. Their success depended on Reagan. No one else! Datino was good but he disappeared in the finals. Didn’t even know he was on the ice. Iona was a much better team and even though two of the games went into OT, Iona definitely was the stonger team. I think Iona out shot them by over 50 shots in 3 games and Stepinac had absolutely no Answer for the Molinaro, Cambria and King line. This line dominated and they came up big when it counted. Stepinac’s defensive squad and coach made one mistake after another and in the end, they paid for their shortfalls. This year might be a real tough year for Stepinac!
Who cares about all this. Lets talk about Suffern
If Suffern goes undefeated in league 1 i will personally go out of my way and donate $1000 to suffern hockey at this point it would be a miracle if they could beat Mamk at least once.
I am marking down the date and time. I will get back to you at the end of the season
Forget about Suffern and Mamaroneck. You’re both lucky that at the end of the season that you will not play Pelham. Because Pelham is going to beat you both during the season!
How can anyone say Shuman is the best…... What has he ever done. Willows has a track recoed… Shuman’s only record is that he turned his back on his team when they needed him. Parents should be proud of him!
is this if they go undefeated in league 1 or the entire season?
League 1
for all those that bad mouth players be an adult or kid if you feel the need to bad mouth someone be a man and put your name on here and dont hide behind some made up name.
Pelham v. Suffern
Hey Man, Boy does the TRUTH HURT!
anyone going to be at the iona-suffern exhibition game tomorrow (11/13) at 3??
fyi
suffern-iona is (obviously) at sport-o
I heard a rumor that Hiller has missed travel games recently due to an upper body injury. Is he playing in the Iona scrimmage later this week? Without his playmaking ability, other Suffern skaters will need to step it up against a very fast and deep Iona squad.
fanotgame,
It’s just a scimmage…..why would he bother?
I would think suffern and iona will use this scrimmage to view players that will have to fill in spots that are open due to graduation. I think most already know what Hiller can do so for him to play in this game (if he’s not 100%) is just crazy. I would bet that if he does play it won’t be for very long
Hiller is not hurt
You all need to stop putting these kids on a pedestal. Let them play hockey and stop talking about them like they are the second coming. You all need to treat them like kids. Nothing against Hiller, but who cares if he plays or not. It is obvious that the person who asked if Hiller was hurt, knows him. So why bother asking. You just wanted to start a controversy. Oh and by the way, Schelling does not care that it is a scrimmage. He wants to win, because he knows if he lost, it will be all over the blogs that Suffern has lost its touch. And no matter what he says, he does care what people say.
Crazy- I don’t know Hiller personally. Just appreciate his style of play. Heard he missed some Saints games. Glad to hear it is nothing serious. And I am sure the Iona players will take the scrimmage seriously, also.
WoW-you are concerned about a player on a team that you have no connection with. Sounds creepy to me…..
if anyone is at sporto-o-rama at 3 for the game (scrimmage) today, please post when available for score updates…thanks in advance…
I would be interested in Fanotgame’s take on the RYE/Oss scrimmage last nite? My sense was not many varsity players participated.
To AAA- It was the last day of tryouts for Rye. With about one half dozen returning varsity palyers in street clothes and a still crowded bench of about 25 skaters, it is safe to say that close to 1/2 of the ice time was given to skaters who will not suit up for Rye varsity this year. For those that did participate, it was a good scrimmage. Close game, no stupid penalties and no one injured.
Who won the Rye/Oss scrimmage? What score?
I didn’t see the whole scrimmage and the score wasn’t posted on the scoreboard. They just did two 25 minute halves with an ice cut in between. Stops every once in a while to switch goalies. Both teams played a bunch of them. I think the score was something like 3-3, but I could be wrong.
Stepinac will not be the only Westchester team having trouble making the playoffs this year. Both Iona and Fordham will struggle in a league in which Chaminade is allowing travel players to play and St. Anthony’s “A” team competing. Also Farrell is always strong. This leaves only one playoff spot open if there are no suprises. I have a feeling the Fordham-Iona rivalry will be alot more entertaining this year.
chshl 08-09, if that chaminade comment is accurate AND if st. anthony’s plays its A team in CHSHL, i agree
Chaminade alway has travel players on their teams. The travel players just don’t miss their travel games for HS generally. St. Anthony is playing their B team in the league. Their A team would be wasting their time in the CHSHL.
That being said it should be a competitive league this season.
CHSHL,
Chaminade does not usually allow travel players to play however this year apparently they are, I dont know why, I do kno that they have at least 1 junior A player and a few junior Bs. St. Anthonys will be fielding a team in the CHSHL, as most of us know, but the rumor is that they could only field one team this year because they didnt have enough. Regardless, I agree it should be a very competitive year.
chshl 08-09, agreed, heard st. anthony’s graduated a ton from that championship season (when they beat St. Mary’s for the State title)
etb vs. stepinac scrimmage sunday
Pelham vs New Rochelle at Ice Hutch friday 11/14 should be interesting
Scarsdale vs. Ossining scrimmage on Friday. Should NOT be interesting.
suffern beat iona 7-3..it was 3-3 after the first half(they played two 25 minute halves) when the regulars for both teams played. suffern came out sluggish and it seemed like they need a 3rd and 4th defenseman to step up after mcc and norwin. iona forwards molinaro especially looked quick but their defense and goaltending looked suspect. after a stretch in the first where iona dominated, suffern pretty much controlled play.
since rye football is doing well and has another shot at the state title will they have problems with top players getting enough practices like they did last year
Sorry, but Chaminade has always allowed travel players to play. This year no different than the past.
Honestly, who gets excited about Scimmages. Yes WE beat Iona today but it was close until their two top starters (Molinaro and Cambria) left to go to NY Applecore practice.
Iona definitely showed our weaknesses. Need more help on Defense. Mcc and Norwin need another 2 defensemen to step up. Can’t survive the season with just two defensemen.
Iona has a good club, Definitely have alot of speed and if their Goalie improves then it should be a great game in January.
Rye does not have as many kids playing both football and hockey like they did last year.
CHSHL 08-09,
If Chaminade has a player playing for Applecore A, then don’t worry about him going to the HIgh School games. He’s not missing the Applecore game.
is north playing out of sport o or the mall this year
What football players play hockey? Not nearly as many as last year.
is harold still running these blogs? where are the team and player scouting reports already? bloggers have been faithful throughout the offseason and as the season nears we need more topics for dicussion. also i was at the suffern-iona scrimmage and i think “suffern fan” said everything perfectly, good analysis.
Hey Suffern Fan, I don’t know what game you where watching, but I saw Fuchs and Byrnes step up and play a good game.I think both those guys who got a total of 10 minutes between them last year did just as good as anyone else.
I agree with Crazy
who scored for Suffern?
Jeager -3
Hill-1
Hiller-1
Nicholson-1
Norwin-1
wrong,
i second applecore’s comment. you’re completely off. chaminade maintains an unwritten rule (pick either your club team or your high school team). they informally put in the place the CT rule. you’ve obviously never seen ncaa rosters on uscho.com where there are always a few chaminade kids (i’m sure they really played for chaminade in order to get where they did)...just think about it, a school with close to 2,000 boys smack in the middle of long island…and they don’t have hockey players? hahahaha
what other leagues are there for the catholic hs besides the chs. how are the leagues set up
?,
the chsaa (catholic high school athletic association) only has 2 geographical areas in the state. here and buffalo. (the only 2 districts where the catholics do not compete with the publics.) the rest of new york state does so i believe
however, there are some schools (st. mary’s in manhasset, formerly st. anthony’s in huntington, etc.) that competed as non-sanctioned, club teams in the NYSAHA (new york state amateur hockey association)....basically, these teams have no official start date, no official stop date and have no limit on game capacity…
you obviously have your districts in the NYSPHSAA (new york state public high school athletic association)
and you then you have your prep schools/boarding schools (ie, northwood, national sports academy, trinity-pawling, millbrook, hoosac, new york military academy, etc.)
heard that iona took a 3-0 lead
suffern ties it up
then iona’s 3 applecore players leave for practice at the break and the young iona sophomore goes between the pipes for the 2nd session
downhill from there…
iona dominated the first half. their passing was accurate and they were quick on all ends. their defense cleared everything quickly minimizing quality shots on goal for suffern. halfway through the game one of the iona players got hurt and with molinaro and cambria leaving as well there was a huge loss of skill, speed, and momentum. adding to the loss of ionas players, suffern came out better in the second half (the game was set up in 2 periods of 30 minutes) and without ionas 2 best players, suffern was able to capitalize. also in the second half, iona put in a goalie who had sat on a cold bench and a locker for almost 50 minutes, and had no warmup. he had a shaky game though he had a good performance towards the end once settled in, making an impressive breakaway save. sufferns goalies did very well. their goalie in the first half looked very professional, standing up to iona at their high point. the goalie that came in second had very few shots on goal and was not tested in a big way, though he played his part when he had to
Crazy,
They did OK for their first scrimmage! Saw alot of good things but agree that we need some improvement on Defense. We also still need a few players to step up but the season is young and we’ll be in a good position by year end.. Iona had a lot of speed so it’s good playing a fast paced game.
heard iona took a 3-0 lead
yea they just lost it towards the end
they steadily decreased as the time went on lol
i really thouht sufferns dmen would not provide quality scoring opportunities from the point this year after losing conklin and ojeda but their point shots looked solid against iona..people are saying that none of sufferns dmen after their top two stepped up but i thought bryrnes played a steady game and if he plays like that could be a viable 3rd man…gabriel and rice both looked sound, none of the goals were really their fault…the forwards started off slow but gained momentum as the game went on. couldnt really expect too much though considering hiller and hill both have missed considerable time recently due to sickness and injury and aren’t quite back in stride yet.
Hill had mono for awhile and is just coming back and Hiller had surgery and is also just on his way back so they are not 100% yet but I’m sure they will be in sync and ready to go for that first game against Pelham.
Scrimmages are so meaningless. Each coach has a different opinion on how they want to play it. Some teams, concerned with how they will look or be percieved by others play all out to win. Other coaches maybe not as insecure with their team or more comfortable are content with looking at players or trying things out with no concern for the outcome or the scoreboard. Many times if a mid level or level team scrimmages a high level team the lower team may want to build momentum by getting a scrimmage victory. It all depends on the coach. Usually astute fans can watch and tell if the coach is going for a W or just checking some cylinders on his team. Watch how many players the coaches use, etc. These scrimmages usually mean nothing, the only people who can tell are the players and coaches as they know how much stock they put into it in the first place
Somers/North Salem vs. John Jay tonight
Suffern vs Iona,
Seems to me that both coaches would learn alot from this scrimmage. Iona does have the fire power to score (Up 3-0)but needs to concentrate on their Defense and Goal tending.
Suffern, realizes that they have to improve their defense especially when they’re playing against a faster team. But once we settled down, proved that we could skate with anyone.
Overall, I think this scrimmage was a success for both teams!
It really is too bad Iona and Fordham can’t play in League One. Both these programs put out a competitive team year after year and would do just fine in and add depth to the power league. Stepinac is a little short on players this year, but they have also had some quality players go thru their system recently. Sounds like the CHSHL this year is a little deeper than in the past with St A’s coming in and Chaminade allowing jr players to participate on the school team. That should make for a good season. Better to battle for the last playoff spot in a bunch of tight league games than run thru a weak league winning big.
High school. I agree with you on scrimmages. As long as no one gets hurt and everyone gets to play, the scrimmage is a success. A secure coach will use the ice time to answer questions rather post a result. If a lower league team playing a higher league team wants to play it more like a game to give the program some confidence going into the season, that is fine also.
Suffern’s defense will not be as strong as they were last year. Their goals from the points will be down. But, I feel they played well last night and will get better as the year goes on. They have to, Schelling will not allow anything else.
I was very happy with how the defense played yesterday, Byrnes and Fuchs looked good. There is still a lot of work to do, but I am confident they will get the job done. a few of the younger guys also looked good, Jaeger, Baker and Nicholson showed a tremendous amount of improvement from last year. With a little fine tuning with the lines Suffern will be right there at the end of the season.

Which Iona player got hurt? Did Modica lay him out?
Suffern is the most under rated team this season. The defense is solid (both lines) and the forwards (even the third line) is still strong enough to skate with any team in League 1. After the first few games of the season, they will not be under rated any longer! Fuchs is an Ojeda like talent. He will only get better as the season grinds on.
alot of ppl look for approval from ppl on this blog. i think the only way to gain respect is to show it on the ice. i think suffern can skate with prob the best teams in the state, but do i think there the best team in the state? no but they can prove me wrong and more power to you. Cant wait till suffern vs mamaroneck good luck to both teams.
Most of the time I don’t agree with Postman, but this time I do. Hey Postman, don’t get used to it
Postman and Ramapo’s Finest,
Besides the two players from Iona who left for practice who else could skate with Hiller
My Hockey Team, Honestly nobody, and Hiller is far from 100%. Ramapo, I honeslty like it better when we disagree, a little uncomfortable otherwise..
Postman- I have been told that I need to start being nicer to people. But if you want, I will disagree with you on everything.
old school.what do you mean by ojeda like talent when talking about fuchs?
I agree with you postman but think in the first half of the scrimmage we played great D on him. Looked as if we always had a guy watching him. I can’t wait to watch our boys face you again and see Hiller at 100%.
does anyone happen to know what the lines were for the scrimmage yesterday for suffern?
fanotgame,
You’re absolutely right. Too bad Iona, Stepinac and Fordham were not in League 1. Now that would be very interesting.
brewster/carmel scrimmage tonight…brewster looked small and weak, I was surprised at how well carmel did against them. brew did not skate like a league 2 team
would be more a league 2 team. Iona and Fordham would be good fits in 1
New Ro has some weapons this year I thought they hung in with Pelham pretty good today. Pelham came out on top though. New Ro goalie was strong and Prunesti is a strong player. Pelham had lots of kids and played maybe 5 or 6 lines. Pelham was consistantly strong the whole time like they always are. New Ro will contend in league play count on it. Pelham showed not too many weaknesses and had quite a few smaller younger players getting time. New Ro opens with Scarsdale should be a good game.
Not sure how good this game will be with Scarsdale not looking too good in 8-2 loss to Ossining. 6 came vs. frosh goalie in first, but skating did not look good anyway. Might be a long season.
Anyone catch the John Jay-Somers/NS game tonight?
what football players play hockey this year?
Old School
Ojeda was one of Schellings most consistant players but never got any respect from the coach, and when he hit someone they would hurt 2 to 3 days later as far as Fuchs being this type of player he has a long way to go,and I can guarentee he will not be as physical.
How he plays over all depends on how the coach treats him over time.
Also noticed Suffern doesnt have much size at all there is no Yorke no Wynne no Kaster type players and I would’nt put Modica as that kind of player even though he has size
Saw the Pelham-NewRo game yesterday and both teams showed there skills and weakneses Pelhams top players looked to be Flory who had 2 goals and Emerson and Duffy who looked solid however the goaltending was very questionable for NewRo there top players were Prunesti who had 3 goals and Feliu who looked strong before they took him out but their defense showed they were weak anyway the score was 5-4 Pelham
John Jay blew out Somers last night. JJ might just be more competitive than everyone thinks. Greenberg is a dominent skater and with Rofofsky they will put up lots of points. They have a top coaching that will likely shorten the bench once the real games begin. JJ a Surprise?
Can’t wait!!!! ONE more week and let the BLOGGING begin. I’m really impressed with all the hockey Bloggers. Do you realize this blog has never had any down time since it first started.
Any way, I think this year is going to be very interesting. Looks like Mamaroneck and Suffern have the edge, BUT keep and eye on Pelham. They have alot of horses and it looks like they will not have any Travel conflicts. And White Plains is going to cause havoc also. So it’s going to be competitive. All I have to say, is sit back and enjoy because it’s going to be fun!
The Record
John Jay was even worse than I expected. Somers came out in the first half and skated circles around them. Two ridiculously lucky goals off of deflections were the only reason the game was tied. Somers’ defense had some trouble in the second half, but there is no way that John Jay is going to be competitive in their league. John Jay was a surprise, but not a very good one.
Problem with Scarsdale is depth and inexperience—it could be a long year for them. They have two defenseman who can play and have experience at the HS level. The other two have good size, but lack skating ability and game experience (too many times they turned it over and/or beaten at blue line creating odd man rushes). Offensively, the second line is 2 freshman and a sophomore, and it showed last nite. The third and fourth lines are mostly freshman, and post the first period, saw little ice time except for at the very end. For the second and third period, Scarsdale skated 8 or 9 kids. Gluck did not play until third period. Scarsdale 2nd goalie played well in second period. First kid looked overmatched. Game was 1-1 in both 2nd and 3rd periods. 6-0 Ossing in first. Ossing looked very good, moved the puck well, especially their defenseman. Ossing goaltending was solid (big kids who cover alot of the net). They rolled at least 4 lines. It looks like they have a very solid team.
So John Jay beats a League 4 team and they get excited! WOW. From what Sal says, it was a tie and not a BLOW OUT! Looks like John Jay is going to have a long season! LOL
Actually the scrimmage was 5-3 in Pelhams favor and Mamone who was a D man was at forward and had 3 goals I think. both teams played ok New Ro will be gearing up for opening night against Scarsdale. New Ro will be ready when they hit the ice. Prunesti will lead it but New Ro has other players who could make things happen.
Agree. Suffern and Mamaroneck will lead the pack but Pelham could contend. Whats amazing about Pelham is how they stay at the top every season with very little travel player influence. Mamaroneck gets the edge over Suffern as the defending champ. Keep an eye on the Eastchester Tuckahoe Bville group too. Ossining looks good also in early scrimmages
Not to sure that Mamaroneck gets the edge over Suffern. Both are good teams but Mamaroneck has the Connor factor. You might have Fine and Jackson but they haven’t been tested yet. Don’t know if they can pick up where Connor left off.
That’s why you have to include Pelham in the mix. Witz well definitely have his team ready to play the big boys.
Pelham will always be a good team. Their players mainly grow up together playing in the Pelham Youth Hockey association. Once they get older the varsity team plays almost year round. There is a fall and spring Ice Hutch league that bookend the HS season. Witz coaches his kids a extra 25 games a season right there. Combine that with a heavy weekly practice schedule and players basically don’t need travel hockey. Only a few of them over the years play travel cause frankly there isn’t any time to. Since Witz runs the Ice Hutch it makes Pelham one of the few HS teams to basically have it’s own rink and full time locker room. All of this adds up to long range success for Witz and the program.
just looking at some updated ncaa level rosters…
no wonder delbarton from jersey smacked iona these past few years every time they played…there are 3 freshmen that play for middlebury (arguably one of the best non-d1 schools year-over-year) that went to delbarton (Thad Williams, Zach Williams and Charles Nerback)
also spotted a few more locals making ncaa level rosters
-patrick bursee (west nyack) at colby
-a.j. ferraro (new canaan) at wesleyan
-danny new (white plains) at providence (d1)
-jake douglass (white plains) at framingham state
-michael carroll (white plains) at framingham state
-kevin kelley (bayside) at framingham state
-greg squires (white plains) at western michigan (d1)
douglass and kelley both played for rich guberti’s westchester mariners, but the others played either at good boarding schools or good north american junior programs…
Thoughts on White Plains….
mickey carroll is from new city and not white plains
correction,
you’re right, thanks
CHSHL opener at the new Flushing rink 11/24/ 5:15 pm. Its is said to be state of the art, with an NHL size rink and olympic sized swimming pool. Holy Cross vs St Franny
icehole,
chshl’s opener is actually thursday (11/20) in bayonne (st. joe’s – xavier)
the A division’s opener is the day after, friday (11/21) late night, iona at farrell (coney island) at 10 (iona jv at farrell jv first at 8:15)
but yes, the new flushing rink’s first game is a flushing battle (st. francis – holy cross), 11/24 at 6pm
iona will be playing at farrell (11/21), hosting burke catholic (11/23) and scrimmaging pelham (11/24) before they play in the classic-day-after-thanksgiving-matchup (iona-fordham, 5:15 at playland)....doesn’t stop there….hosting chaminade the day after that, then hosting st. anthony’s the day after that…
The team I follow Mamaroneck has their own locker room and I think Suffern does also. Not sure what that does for you on the ice. Having travel players and talent help out a great deal. In Pelhams case they have never had many kids playing travel but they to play sound and consistent hockey as a team. Mamaroneck Rye Scarsdale and a few others play Spring or fall too. Mamaroneck youth teams play in the Long Island league as youngsters which has to give them a leg up while Pelham youth teams are HV level. It should be an unpredictable exciting season
Test Message
hey how do iona and fordham look this year?
i think fordham’s offense and iona’s goaltending & defense are both underestimated.
any opinions?
john jay was playing their whole entire bench hence it was a scrimmage…they had kids out there on the ice who belong in the in-house leagues. u actually think they went out there trying to prove a point against a team vs. somers/north salem? get real. come game times, JJ is going to be able to compete. One of the strongest teams? obviously not. but they will be able to get some solid wins. with the first line of rofofsky, following greenberg as his go-to guy they should be able to hold some ground. enough talking smack about teams when the season is yet to start…once the season starts, then let the smack talking begin!
Iona goalies are not underestimated, but are just not very ggod. However, they will score lots of goals and will win a lot of high scoring games.
was just looking at some more ncaa level rosters, and looked at hobart (one of the best non d1 programs) b/c i know capalbo from mamaroneck is playing his 2nd year there right now…looking at their roster and see applecore product greg ciciola (freshman) from yorktown heights…congrats
to get real,
when u say LOL in all caps, i assure you that you are the only one who is laughing
Congrats to Cicola. It sure puts it in perspective. Ciciola is finally a freshman at a pretty good D3 school. As a Freshman only has dressed for 1/2 the games. He toiled long and hard travelled and sacrificed in juniors and other places to get a shot, he is still not D1 but he ended up in a good place. Hopefully he can hold onto his spot for four years as every recruiting year will challenge those not on the first two lines. Is a struggle to get there and stay there. so all of you who think its easy to go D1 because you are a travel all star think again. Hats off to Capalbo for holding his slot.
Mimi
Check D3’s Trinity college roster, should find fox lane and yorktown represented. Also D3 Lebanon Valley with a Clarkstown South former player. Speaking of South (never played varsity), move to D1 Merrimack. BU(top D1) has a new rochelle product who was also a 1st rd NHL draft pick.
Thats 3 D3s and 2 D1s, you missed a few.
For those on the JJ vs. /S/NS game. S/NS was missing 2 key defenders, one due to injury and one due to soccer state finals. Also 2 fowards got injured during the game, one in the first half and one in the 2nd, both players didnt return. yes, somers played weak but JJ wasnt that much better, once again it was a scrimmage both teams playing players that may not get alot of ice time
sec1fan,
thanks for the updates. i knew about one of the shattenkirk brothers at bu…
trinity has 3 local boys returning to the squad (carter, letizia and oetting)...still waiting to see the school post their freshmen for the roster (nescac schools start late compared to their d3 peers)
congrats to conte at lebanon valley
i see a nyc kid (soph.) playing at merrimack
don’t know why bobby is listed as ny ny. I beleive he played a year at Clk South modified. He at the very least played for don bosco. If you are including Ct (new canaan) as local, there are alot more kids on many rosters.
Tomorrow at 4:30 at the Palisades center. Any thoughts on the game?? I heard Lynch is the assistant coach there?? Should be an interesting game!!
fritchblows
i checked section 1 athletics’ website and saw that there were 2 games before the white plains/north game
11/12, ossining at rye
11/16, newburgh at jj
were these games or scrimmages? the website doesn’t note them as scrimmages. scores?
fyi, they note white plains/north as scrimmage
Fordham Prep won the scrimmage with North Salem/Somers last night. Not 100% sure but I think the score was 7-4.
score was 6-3 on the Fordham vs. NS game. Not that big of a blow out as the score shows
fordham’s got trouble if that is all they can do against a somers/ns squad…
Any eyewitness reports on the Clarkstown North and White Plains scrimmage?
Don’t people yet realize that these scrimmages don’t reflect anything??? Who knows what players/goalies are getting played and for how many minutes per game. Need to wait for the actual season to begin….....
Lets not get crazy about the pre season scrimmages. From what I can see, there seems to be a lot of 7th, 8th and 9th graders interested in HS hockey. Assuming most HS programs at least suggest and collect a player family “donation” to the hockey booster club to defray the ever increasing ice costs, HS programs should work hard to have full (read 20+ player) varsity and modified rosters. For the public schools, that means putting your 9th graders on varsity to open up modified ice for the 7th and 8th graders. Those freshman are not likely to see a lot of regular season varsity ice time (unless they are strong travel players), so coaches will look to get those paying 3rd and 4th line players in a lot during the pre season scrimmages. Maybe that is why I am seeing an explosion in the amount of scheduled pre season scrimmages. A team running 4 forward lines and 6 D men in a scrimmage will look a whole lot different running 6-9 forwards and 3-4 d men in a game that counts. Also, scrimmages are a great way to let the backup goalies get ice time that they are unlikey to see in the regular season. For example, it is unlikely Ossining would score 8 vs. Scarsdale with their top goalie in net the whole game and their top line playimng every other shift.
Sure, I agree scrimmages should be discounted. But useful information can be gleamed out of them.
An Iona/Suffern scrimmage can tell you if iona will be strong and /or how is Suffern’s next wave of players, goalie, et. al. wil be.
A clarkstown north/white plains scrimmage is a possible indicator of White Plains after they’ve lost all last years good seniors and of course how does the North all state goalie look coming off ACL surgery and do Willows and Shuman still have that old chemistry from 2 years ago. Ididn’t even no about Coach Lynch at White Plains if that is true?
The final score is the least important part of a scrimmage.
Either way, we’ll no soon enough as the real games start next week.
hey mimi, it was just a scrimmage. You must know that coaches use those opportunities to form lines, see what new players can do, etc. Wait for the regular season to get underway before you pass judgement.
How many other blogs talk about scrimmages??? NONE i bet. Hockey rules in Section 1.
Mamaroneck scrimmages at Rye Country Day School tomorrow tuesday) at 4:30P.M.
Scrimmages? your all kidding I hope. Little freshmen skating against seniors shooting on kids who will never play a single game in net this season. The coaches are using these games for their own purposes. Scores and results mean nothing. Sure a couple of times a game some of the actual regular season kids will be pitted against each other. For the most part it is just a scrimmage.
Hey Harold, are we going to be looking at new posts soon, perhaps a preview for next weeks games?
very good “we are talking about scrimmages” you are very smart, yes, they are talking about scrimmages. Can you pleae show me one place where someone said anything about these games meaning anything other then a chance to see what a team has and doesn’t have. I know you can do it, you are very bright.
Hey smart if your going to be a smart ass learn to spell please correctly. (pleae)
I agree with “Talking about”.... You have people posting scores and making judgement on the blog for scrimmages. You mean someones parent is keeping score even if the scoreboard shows zero.
if anyone can post any information on the CN vs. White Plains scrimmage that took place tonight, that would be great – as a CN fan, im more so interested on the CN side. again, i know its only a scrimmage, but im interested to see how CN looked – how did mcindoe look? besides the willows and shuman, are there any promising players that will make an impact this year? how many players did they have total?, etc.
any info from anyone who attended would be much appreciated! thanks!
North 5 White Plains 4 Good scrimmage for both I call it even. But Norths Matt Willows out sick did not play, add him to the equation and its no contest.
Wrong, at the end of the regular scrimmage (before the two teams did power play/penalty kill for eachother ina non-formal format) White Plains was up 3-1
Mcindoe looked weak and Shuman was invisible on the ice
North scored no goals on White Plains starter and the rest on their backup, who began playing hockey last year
so willows did not play? who scored for CN? for WP?
White Plains,
The score was 2-1 at the end of 2 periods and then they started the power play/ penalty kill situations. I thought for the 1st scrimmage both starting goalies played well.
Its a scrimmage nobody wins. Both teams have a lot of work to do before the first game. and using your mentality you should of went home when it was 3 to 1, but you didn’t. And the players you talk about were far from invisible. and for your back up goalie i thought he played good, he didn’t get much help from your team when North scored. And time will tell if I’m WRONG about the difference Matt Willows will make to Norths team.
Who was the goalie for White Plains?
McIndoe looked weak? you have got to be kidding me! and Shuman invisible, come on now! every time Shuman was out he was getting slashed, or hacked. McIndoe didn’t have much help from the new defense. North will come together and do fine. They pulled McIndoe after the first 1/2 and put in the backup goalie. Shuman was barely out. As previous posts have stated, it was a scrimmage. Time for the players who wont play during the season to play!
And the score after 3 periods was 5-4 NORTH
I’m surprised Shuman wanted to lower himself to play high school hockey this year. He should go directly to the pros!
How did Eastchester do against Stepinac last night in their scrimmage?
Personally I think both Altieri and Mccarick looked better than Shuman. And yes, i believe Mcindoe is the best goalie in the section, I’m saying he did not look good tonight.
Why is Shuman getting any press. Honestly, what has he ever done. Last year he didn’t even play, two years ago, his brother and Willows were the team and he did nothing.. He plays travel and still has not proven anything! So I ask why is he considered a top player when he has done nothing in High school hockey other than turn his back on his old teammates.
I’m glad that McIndoe was playing. Thats whats most important. Coming back from his injury, it is probably the first game action he’s seen since last season.
#9 and #23 looked looked the best players on JJ last night. #9 has some size and speed. #23 was knocking kids all over the ice. JJ might surprise some people.
Its not hockey season yet, can I still sneak in some college stuff?
ACHA vs. NCAA D. 3
University of Rhode Island beat Wesleyan 6-4 Friday night. Former Monroe Woodbury Star Richie Falasca had a goal and an assist for Rhode Island.
Also Mickey Carroll of C. North put up his first point (an assist) for Frahmingham this past weekend.
Who are #9 and #23? Who were they playing?
Can we pleases start talking about Suffern again.
Jojo is going to dice kids up this year, people are forgetting how amazing he is. He was skating circles around fordham prep kids. 60 goals coming from him this year. Another 30 coming from Chris Seymour.
false. the best players on jj are rofofsky (#17) and greenberg (#88)
Mr. Jojo, thanks for the update on your amazing child!!!
How about those Mounties
acha,
this is great to see acha programs attracting the same (and sometimes better) talent as ncaa d3
now that i think about, who wouldn’t want to go play club and get an quality education at a place like bc, lehigh, maryland, cornell, etc. rather than playing at frammy state…
stop with the college updates seriously who cares
ok lets get to it…
Predictions for section 1 title??
“bbear”
Didn’t notice them. Sorry
I would say Mammaroneck has to be favored in League 1 and Pelham in League 2 at this point.
Those kids on JJ are #9 Mike Skalaski who is a sophomore forward and going to be a good player this year and beyond and #23 Lou Ricci a senior who should be one of the better defensemen in the section this year. Rofosky and Greenberg are senior forwards who should have big years this year. There are also some younger players on JJ who are going to contribute right away and get better as the season goes on.
ACHA
D1 Club is not NCAA varsity hockey. Its great hockey but its not on the same level as D3.
I noticed that you failed to mention:
1)RI is ranked 10th in D1 club
2)RI is 12 games into their season
3)Wesleyan is not a D3 powerhouse. They had a significant losing record last season
4)Last but definitely not least, Wesleyan hasn’t played a D3 game yet this season, they’re just finishing up tryouts!!!!!!
Whats most telling about the post is that the game was only 6-4. The NCAA establishes the competitive designations assigned to the participants. There is no reason to try and make an argument that D1 club is on par with NCAA D3.I’m sure, many people with similiar agendas would pose the argument that D2 club is on par with D1 club.
Anybody who goes on to play collegiate hockey at any level is an accomplished hockey player. Be happy where you are and refrain from trying to convince anybody willing to listen that a level below another is just as good.
Thank you Sec 1 Fan. Now can we stop with the club hockey posts?
I think you have to go with Mamaroneck in league 1 and Pelham in league 2 at this point.
#9 on JJ is Mike Skalaski. He’s a soph forward and will be a very good player this year and the next two.
#23 is Lou Ricci. He’s a Sr defenseman. Should be one of the better defensemen in Section 1 this year.
Since you are accusing me of not mentioning all the facts, don’t forget any now, here are some more facts I didn’t mention.
The Goalie RI was using…....it was his first college game ever. Maybe Weslyean was using it as a tryout, but Rhode Island was trying out many players that had been sitting on the bench or in the stands all year. Oh, and the players that scored for Wesleyan were the best players on the team the year before. Weslyean will be better this year than the 7-14 team they had last year, they didn’t graduate anyone.
Rhode Island was ranked 10th, but that was before they were blown out in 3 straight games to West Chester twice and Delaware. When the new rankings come out, look for them to drop to about 15, unless they come out with a miraculous effort vs. Penn State this weekend. At the end of last year Wesleyan was ranked 50th, look for them to move up after they play a few games in their league
Did I leave anything out now?
Why don’t you ask those RI players who just beat a D. 3 team after losing 9-0 to ACHA Delaware if they think the ACHA is a level below.
Just to mention – Suny Canton, 1st year in D1 club, beat both Southern New Hampshire and Franklin Pierce, both NCAA Div. 3, a couple of weeks ago. Both of these Div. 3 schools are on the weaker side but they are still D3 schools – so this just goes to show that D1 club can be just as good as the weaker D3 schools.
High school hockey time. Not college hockey time.
ACHA, what you did leave out was that Wesleyan played 3 goalies: Number 1 Goalie: 7 shots, 7 saves. Number 2 goalie: 21 shots, 19 saves. Put in Number 3 goalie: 10 shots 6 saves: Game over. Definitely not looking for the win.
Mimi – seriously, knocking a kids’ choice of college is pretty low. Why don’t you give their parents $45,000 a year for 4 years so they can go to a school that’s acceptable for you.
I’m with you on that one, WITH ALL DUE RESPECT. I doubt mimi’s gonna pony up though.
Some people just can’t see that not every school is for every kid or better yet within every parents budget.
Oh Boy, ACHA you are trying to say that club is on par with D3.
ACHA, your response is ridiculous as WITH ALL DUE RESPECT was able to demonstrate with his/her post. If a D2 club team beats a D1 club team its NOT a benchmark for making the argument that the 2 levels are equal!!! It doesnt matter who played or who didnt play. Some of the top D3’s can beat the weaker D1’s, it doesn’t make D3 as good as D1. Its a fairly simple concept.
Again D1 club hockey is a tremendous accomplishment. It stands on its own merit. It does not have to be compared favorably to NCAA D3. I will agree that Club hockey is just below the NHL if it will make the posts go away.
It would suffice if the posts gave us updates on how former local HS players were doing. Its great to hear about their accomplishments. It might even help current HS players in figuring out what might work for them collegiately.
Once again you don’t make sense, I always mention how past players are doing. In my last post I mentioned that Richie Falasca and Mickey Carroll just put up some points in their last games.
And I am telling you I played in both. My team was NCAA D. 3 and switched to ACHA D. 1 my sohpmore year, and I will admit that at that time (the early 2000’s) Babson, Middlebury, Plattsburg, and Norwich were better than any ACHA team I played against, but we were always on par with the Stonehill’s, Curry’s, and Wentworths of the world. However the ACHA has gotten much better since my time there, while D. 3 has stayed pretty much the same.
acha your post is ridiculous. curry is always the top contender in ECAC northeast every year and are in the top 20 right now in the nation. they had th ecac northeast plaer of the year and the ecac northeast rookie of the year from the 07-08 season on their team and your telling me your club team is as good as them
They are much better now. In the year 2000-2001 they were not very good at all we played them twice and beat them 5-0 both times, they went through a few coaches, and they didnt’ start to get better until the last 4 years.
I looked it up to make sure I had the year right (sometimes they blend together for me), but Curry had just gotten their new coach and they were weak when he frst started
http://www.uscho.com/stats/teamYxY.php/curry-colonels/mens-college-hockey/team,curry/gender,m.html
with all due respect,
you’re right, schools like williams, amherst, tufts, connecticut college, manhattanville, hobart, st. olaf, lawrence…they’re all cheap…
Why can’t we talk college hockey? Not a single high school game has been played.
College club hockey is extremely relevant for most kids in section 1 who desire to play any college hockey.
And why limit the discussion to D1 club and D3 NCAA. The vast majority of the high school players will fall into the category of D2 and D3 club hockey. Let’s here some about NYU, Fordham, Marist, Hofstra, St. Thomas Acquinas. These are the schools which will extend the hockey “careers” of most of the locals.
ACHA – Has to be the most ridiculous posts you’ve made since you wrote it was easy to get on a DI NCAA roster as a walk on.
The reason the ACHA is better now than when you played is the trickle down effect. Huge increase in births with the bubble beginning around ‘85 birth years and on. That coupled with the influx of Canadian players to U.S. colleges, the fact that most freshmen are 21 years old, played junior and prep school hockey, makes it much more difficult to crack NCAA rosters. Therefore, many strong players began to play club hockey, strengthening those leagues (mostly within the last 3 or 4 years). You’re living back “in the day”. DI, DIII and the entire ACHA is much stronger than it was when Scranton made the move to Club, NOT JUST ACHA. Get real.
Agree with sec1fan, let’s just stick with applauding the accomplishments of our local kids and forget about comparing colleges to each other. I would say it’s impossible to do if you’re not there and just studying box scores.
Mimi…
Nothing wrong with playing for Framingham State, or Franklin Pierce for that matter, NCAA D3 schools which have struggled. I know of 2 that go there and they have worked hard on upgrading their hockey skills, including prep school time. All this denotes a very seriousness of purpose which can be transferred to their other life choices when their hockey ends.
The Daniels twins made the same choices, of course with more startling results. But no one would have criticized them if their results were less spectacular.
I forgot about the easy to walk on to a NCAA D1 roster. That truly was an alltime classic.
ACHA, I really do appreciate the updates on club hockey. There should be a fair amount of interest in club hockey shared by many of the bloggers involved in this site. As ENOUGH pointed out, hockey has improved at all levels. We all agree that Club, Varsity, whatever is great hockey. Just give us the updates and drop the comparisons.
Hey AL BUNDY, even Peg would have agreed with that post.
Come on what is the purpose of questioning kids college picks. Shame on anyone who judges others. All of these kids love hockey and at the same time want to go to college. They love the game and want to play. Some figure out a way to play D III. Other play club, who are we to judge. Good luck to all of them and shame on anyone who says otherwise. Seriously if your so smart buy some skates and try playing this great game.
Eastchester
November 17th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
How did Eastchester do against Stepinac last night in their scrimmage?
just so everyone noes the score of the fordham and north salem/somers scrimage was only 5-4
fordham and north salem/somers
Who cares what the score was. It was only a scrimmage and luckily the two teams will never meet again this season.
Fan, here is the answer to your question:
“How did Eastchester do against Stepinac last night in their scrimmage?”
ETB has a much larger roster than Step, they ran all thier lines, which would not happen in a real game. Step has only 2 lines, all good players,so they could only run thier top lines.
So here is the breakdown:
ETB top 2 lines 2, Step 1
Step 4 rest of ETB 1
Questions?
So what you saying is they lost. Anything else is just excuses. If you have a team playing against another team its a game. It’s called a scrimmage because it doesn’t reflect your record, but no player plays a scrimmage to lose, everyone wants a win, and its sad that ETB can’t beat such a small sized team.
So what was the score? I heard that it was 6 2 Step. But your numbers say 5 3 Step.
