Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley with Harold Gutmann

Preview schedule

November
18

Hey everyone, thanks for your patience this weekend. This is actually one of the busiest weeks of the year for us, since fall sports and winter sports collide (for instance, I can’t cover hockey this weekend because I’ll be in Kingston Friday for Nyack football and Uniondale Saturday for Iona Prep football).

It looks like the winter previews in the newspaper won’t start until next Friday, Nov. 28 (hockey goes first)—there will be 20 players to watch, four feature stories, three questions about the season, and a “season at a glance” box. Incidentally, this should give you some idea of where our focus is right now, since fall sports are still going strong. But I will start posting the hockey team previews this week, starting with League 1 (hopefully by tomorrow morning), and then continuing with the CHSHL/RCDS and League 2, League 3 and League 4.

In the meantime, you can scroll down on the blog to find league and division alignments, key matchups, coaching changes, a new merged team and last year’s all-league, all-section and all-star players. So thanks for hanging in there and I’ll be back shortly.

to title (from the end of the prior blog trail)-

L1: Mamo, Suff, Pelham, Rye, WP, Pac, Jay, RTH

L2: North, ETB, Scars, North Roc, PWBV, Brewster, Yorktown

L3; New Ro, Pawling, Ossining, SNS, South, Fox Lane, BH

L4: SHI, PR, Greeley, LP, KPV, Carmel, TZN

DI Semis: Mamo vs. Pac and Suffern vs. WP/North winner

#4 seed has easier route to semis than #3 seed (who likely has to play North).

DII Semis: Pelham vs. Brewster and Rye vs. Jay. Again, #4 seed (has to be the higher of Brewster/Yorktown regular season) has easier route to semis (a third game against each other) than #1, #2 or #3 seeds that have to play somewhat dangerous league 3 teams like Pawling (Burdick, Delaverne), Ossining (Meile and his merry men-maybe with Dorgan) and SNS (Marasco and co).

  2. Suffern goes to States

Lets talk about Suffern, who wants to go first

  3. I wants to no

Who is the Russian Beauty on the right? WOW!

  4. suffern in 09

what are the lines for suffern and who will be playing. is schelling going to play more than 2 lines and 3 defenseman?

  5. Thanks Harold

Harold – you’ve gone above and beyond here, while still covering your Fall assignments, just wanted to say thanks.

To the rest of the bloggers, we all know who the key players are, the key teams, etc. etc., – its been talked about all offseason – so stop rushing Harold here.

  6. suffern alumni game

    J. Daniels D. Daniels J. Foster
    S Hiller Z Salt M. Ruthberg
    B Hawley M Shore J turco
    S Turco R Matera A cleveland

    VS OLD TIMERS

  7. WP?

    Who does White Plains have?

  8. RCDS Mamk

I know the scrimmages have been controversial topics and people might not care, but just reporting Mamk beat RCDS today 8-1, Mamk played 2nd 3rd and 4th lines of offense for the first 2 periods and Fine and Jackson didn’t play until the 3rd. I won’t say anything more.

  9. not surprising

RCDS has lost a lot of players and Mamaroneck has big numbers of players. Its a scrimmage so lets keep that in mind. Its no secret that Mamaroneck is always in the drivers seat with the amount of talent and players they have every year

  10. tough

Harold, must be tough for you right now. Pressure from your boss to cover fall sports and pressure from the readers to start covering hockey. I can’t imagine there is even one person on your case about the football season, but maybe I am wrong.

  11. Sal

Any predictions on the first round of the White Plains Tournament?

  12. Biff

I was just looking at the Atlantic youth hockey (AAA) website. I feel bad for league 2 goalies. The two leading scorers in the Midget 18 league are Willows and Shuman. If they lead the league against AAA 17 and 18 year olds, what are they going to do in League 2? It is interesting though how many penalty minutes Shuman has. He has significantly more penalty minutes than any other top scorer. Almost 4 times as many as Willows. What’s up with that?

  13. Hockey Fan

Does anyone know who scored for mamk in the scrimmage at rcds?

  14. who cares

rcds just seems to lack everything this year. Very sad

  15. Willows and Shuman

I agree with Biff!! WIllows and Shuman play very well together! It is like they both know were the other one is going to be on the ice. Shuman works hard in the boards and gets the puck to Willows who finishes almost every time. I feel that Willows and Shuman will definitely light up all the goalies in league 2. The should each have over 60 goals each this year with out a doubt. Also Shuman is not one to take many penalties, he is usually the player who draws penalties. I was really confused by this so I looked into his penalties on ayhl. It says in one game he recieved 17 penalty minutes in one game. He got 10 minutes resulting in a game misconduct and 5 minutes for grabbing the face mask. So if you take away those penalties, than he only has 24 penalty minutes which is still not good but its better than 39 minutes.

  16. fanotgame

I think RCDS has goalie issues now that Gluck has left. There may be an 8th grader between the pipes.

  17. sec1 fan

Willows and Shuman play together on a line for NJ Colonials.

  18. rcds vs mama

goals for mamaroneck was hagen marr glaser johnson fine and jackson with 3

  19. Uncontested

Who cares about all of this…the most exciting game all yr is going to be the suffern alumni game much more fire power in this game that you we will see in NYS all this year!

  20. giants hater

Does anybody know when Norths first home game will be either at sporto or at the Mall?
