League 1 overview

- 19
We’re starting the previews with a look at League 1. I think Mamaroneck is the clear favorite, with Pelham and Suffern the most likely to challenge for the title. At this point, I could see four teams finishing in fourth (you can share your thoughts in the poll on the right, and of course the comments below), so it should be a very competitive year. Away we go, in alphabetical order (note: John Jay has been added).
Mahopac (6-17-2 last year, 1-12-1 in League 1)
Last year: After starting out 3-1-1, the Indians suffered through a 0-13-1 stretch before finishing 3-3, losing to Suffern in the Division I semis.
Fowards: The team’s three top scorers all return. Tyler Perrelle (39 points) missed 10 games with a knee injury and still led the team in scoring, which shows how valuable he was. The three-sport star is powerful, anticipates well and has great hands. Chris Mastrocola, who had a great year as sophomore (38 points), is a dynamic player with a lot of speed, and Tyler Gyscek (24 points as a freshman) is now bigger and stronger.
Defense: After being converted from forward to defense last year, Joey Griskin has some experience and should lead this unit. Senior Chris Kelly, sophomore Nick Alexander and junior Rich Barletta are also returning and should play big roles.
Goalies: Bobby Fatone played about 1/3 of the minutes last year and is in his third year on varsity. Kevin Canedo, who missed last year with a back injury, will also push for playing time if he stays healthy.
Outlook: The Indians graduated only two seniors last year, so the core group returns with another year of experience. The Indians have plenty of speed and depth at forward, where they can go 9-10 deep, and if they can actually stay healthy this year, it should be a very improved team.
Mamaroneck (23-4-1, 12-2)
Last year: After avenging its only two Section 1 losses by beating Suffern 2-1 in the sectional final, the Tigers lost in the state quarterfinals in overtime to eventual state champion Massena.
Forwards: Brett Jackson, Christian Glaser and Robert Fine form one of the best first lines in the section. Glaser and Fine combined for 29 goals and 88 points last season, while Jackson, who was injured for most of last season, is one of the smallest players, but is capable of making unbelievable plays with his ability to create space for himself. The second line of Matt Conner, Matt Marr and Will Thompson/Robbie Gardiner (Gardiner is expected back around New Year’s after breaking his leg six weeks ago) all played valuable minutes in the sectional title run last season.
Defense: At 6-foot-6, 220 pounds, first-team all-state defenseman Sean Hagan is one of the area’s most imposing players. A fourth-year varsity player with a rocket slapshot, he controls play with his reach and passing ability. He will likely play with fellow big man Sam Christiansen (6-2, 205). Adam Zweig is another quality defenseman who can hit people and sees the ice well.
Goalies: Luke Glaser posted a 1.74 goals-against average, with seven shutouts, against the county’s toughest schedule. He comes up huge in big spots and has great reflexes, controls rebounds well and is excellent on breakaways.
Outlook: Despite winning the section, the Tigers should still be hungry after losing to Massena on a disputed goal, and then seeing that team win the state title. Westchester/Putnam Player of the Year Brian Conner will be tough to replace, but the Tigers have more returning talent than any other team, The question will be how they respond to their new role as the favorite.
Pelham (17-9-1, 9-5)
Last year: After a strong third-place finish in League 1, the Pelicans fell to Rye 2-1 in the sectional final.
Forwards: Leading goal scorer Marc Flory (24 goals) and distributor Andrew Emerson (23 assists) both return, and Michael Mamone, an outstanding passer with size and speed, is moving up from defense to the center position. Adrian Rivera brings unbelievable speed, Michael Duffy is a big body up front, and Adrian Rivera and Matt Hernandez also logged significant minutes last year. Overall a very talented and experienced group.
Defense: Victor Dzenis and Gus Harms are boht coming off great seasons. They can shoot, are outstanding skaters, are great in both 1-on-1 and odd-man situations, and really understand and work well in the Pelham system. Juniors Nick Perrorazio and Billy Maselli are veterans, while freshman Graham Lambdin and Matt Landis are big, strong freshman who should see significant time.
Goalies: Canterbury transfer Gavin Lambdin returns to Pelham, where he will compete with Skyler Veselis, who had a 2.917 GAA in parts of nine games last year, and freshman Jason Silverstein.
Outlook: The team lost just three players, and while they were all major contributors on offense, the Pelicans return more skill and experience than any other team in Division II, including a strong group of seniors that played on the Final Four team three years ago. Sidenote: coach Ed Witz is one way away from No. 300.
Rye (17-9-2, 6-9-1)
Last year: After a 2-5 start, the Garnets won their second straight sectional championship and were the only team to tie Suffern in the regular season. They lost in the state quarterfinals.
Forwards: Juniors Paul Mundinger and Taka Katsuta will be asked to carry the scoring load. They bring a lot of speed and agility, shoot well, see the ice and handle the puck. Ellis Beber scored 13 goals last season, and Nick Rosenfield is returning off a great year. Senior Chris Fulenwider brings experience and sophomores Robert Holmes and Matt Moran have size and should contribute.
Defense: Senior veterans Paul Skanga and Kris Talgo are real defenseman’s defenseman and should anchor this unit. Sophomores Tommy Sullivan and Alfredo Hulguin have also looked good in the preseason and are expected to step up.
Goalies: Matt Benincasa, who won the starting job around Christmas last year and turned into a real attribute (2.147 GAA), is returning. So are backups James Goodenough and Billy Kawas.
Outlook: The Garnets certainly have the track record, and the talent and system is there for a three-peat. And unlike last year, when Rye didn’t enter the season with a clear starter in goal and struggled to find chemistry early because so many players were winning a football state championship, this year there is only one hockey/football conflict, junior defenseman Brian Powers, so Rye shouldn’t have to recover from a bad start.
Rye Town/Harrison (13-9, 8-6)
Last year: The Titans surprised a lot of people (re: me) by finishing fourth in their first year in League 1. They lost to White Plains in the quarterfinals.
Forwards: Adam Urban (37 points) is one of the top forwards in the league. He’s one of the fastest kids the program has ever had, has a rocket shot and is tenacious on the puck. Mike Finiguerra, Matt Jacobson and Arran Walsh also played on the top two lines last year, while freshman Dean Brancucci and Sal Jiacomo should see minutes and Connor Strozza moved up from defense. Overall, there are three solid lines here.
Defense: Senior Matt O’Shea and Tyler Ketchabaw are a good pair. O’Shea is offensive-minded with a good shot and good skating ability, while Ketchabaw is a stay-at-home defenseman. Sophomore Nate Berman was playing good minutes last year and should lead the second line.
Goalies: Paul Nadasi is a junior in his third year on the team. He’s tall and knows what to expect after playing some minutes last year.
Outlook: The Titans have improved rapidly in each of the last four years, moving from the lower leagues into the top half of the power league. Now, can they replace their top two scorers, top defenseman and four-year starting goalie? They’ve proven the doubters wrong before.
Suffern (24-1-2, 13-0-1)
Last year: The Mounties entered the playoffs as the top-ranked team in the state. Unfortunately for them, their only loss came in the Division I championship to Mamaroneck.
Forwards: Zac Hiller and Johnny Hill will be the leaders of this unit. Hiller was tied for the most assists in Section 1 (44) and has more points than any returning player (65), while Hill is a physical, hustling player with a tremendous shot. First-line forward Jake Jaeger and senior Joe Modica are the other veterans of this unit.
Defense: Greg McCarron, a third-year veteran, and Kevin Norwin, an Empire State Games alternate, are the backbone of the defense. Both are incredibly solid players and should log a majority of the minutes.
Goalies: Who will replace first-team all-state “Natoli the Goalie”? It’s between Paul Gabriel and Brandon Rice. Though both played a total of 43 minutes last year, they have had a lot of travel experience. Coach Rob Schelling is hoping for another Tom Anthony Vertullo situation—he only started his senior year, but earned second-team all-state honors.
Outlook: The Mounties have a total of six skaters who saw ice time last year, so it’s hard to predict what will happen. Going by past experience, there’s no rebuilding at Suffern, only reloading. It’s just a matter of who will step up.
White Plains (23-4, 10-0 in League 2)
Last year: The Tigers had their best season in 15 years—their only Section 1 losses were to Suffern and Mamaroneck (4-3 in the sectional semifinals).
Forwards: Steve McCarrick, Matt Altieri, Dan Broderick and Jeremy Lindh were all on the top two lines last year. McCarrick and Altieri are big, solid players with good hands and good speed and a combined five yetars of experience, while Broderick and Lindh work really well on the second line, where Broderick’s grittiness and Lindh’s finesse compliment each other.
Defense: Junior Ryan McGee and senior Harrison McCandless are smart, two-way defensemen who seldom get caught out of position and can contribute on the attack. Aaron Klimchuk, a transfer from RCDS, brings good size.
Goalies: Senior Mike Pavarini was 7-1 in his eight starts last year, with a 2.88 GAA. He’s a third-year player with really good quickness, and he should thrive knowing that the net is his.
Outlook: The Tigers might not have the star power like last year’s duo of Phil Sigona and Rui Encarnacao (153) points combined), but they have a bunch of solid players. It will be interesting to see how they deal with the a League 1 schedule, where every game is a battle.
John Jay (9-13-1, 4-9-1)
Last year: After a 1-7 slide to start 2008, followed by a late-season coaching change, the Indians won two straight and then fell to Rye in the Division II semis.
Forwards: Leading scorer Dave Rofosky (40 points) returns, as does Kyle Greenberg (23 points), the third-leading scorer. Rofosky is skilled and fast and plays with a chip on his shoulder, while Greenberg is a very talented senior who should pile up points. They will be joined on the first line by Scott Turecamo in an intelligent player who can pass and shoot well, while strong center Mike Skalaski leads the second line.
Defense: Louis Ricci is an experienced, physical defenseman and is paired with Nathaniel Kaplan, a good-skating junior with a lot of hockey smarts. Senior Alex Wohl and sophomore Alec Lalone provide depth, so Danny Wertz might be moved to forward.
Goalies: Mike Ott returns after a very steady sophomore season (3.25 GAA). He will be backed up by two younger goalies, Joe Webb and Jake Petrillo.
Outlook: The Indians graduated 10 seniors, and need a group of younger players to step into big roles. They’re not very big, but they are scrappy and could sneak up on anyone who overlooks them.

lets go suffern. look for them to do what they always have and show up to play on day 1. we are coming for you mamaroneck!
Looking forward to a great League 1 season. Lots of good hockey talent in that league.
Lots of Section 1 depth this year. Clarkstown North, ETB, North Rockland, John Jay, New Rochelle and Sleepy Hollow are some of the other strong teams in the section.
Harold, you’ll be spared the football type blowouts you had to endure this fall.
It should be a great season.
Hey Harold, don’t worry about Suffern. You are right, the players will step up and play just fine. Suffern has alot of good players, that saw virtually no ice time last year. This year is a different year. There will be alot of young players stepping up on offense. Norwin and McCarron can not do it themselves on defense. The senior Byrnes and the Sophomore Fuchs will have to “step up” and take control. Gabriel is the man in goal. First game prediction- Suffern 6 Pelham 2
Hockey, Hockey, Hockey, Hockey, Hockey, Hockey, CAN”T WAIT!
My predictions for League 1. I think there’s great competition this year and everyone talks about the Big Two but I feel there’s another team out there that will shock league 1 this year! SO here’s my picks…....
1.Pelham (Best forward line in League 1, tough D and strong goaltending and one of the Best Coaches around)
2.Suffern (Hungry and looking for revenge, and do they have anyone who can step in for Salt and Ruthberg?)
3.Mamaroneck (Don’t know if they can overcome the Connor factor. Alot of pressure on that Jackson/Fine line)
4.White Plains ( Could be a surprise, depends on their goalie Pavarini. They have the horses, but no Rui or Sigona. So Alteri really need to step up)
Suffern will have 3 solid offensive lines. The younger kids will step up on offense. Norwin and McCarron can not do it by themselves. The senior Byrnes and Sophomore Fuchs will have to “Step up”. Gabriel will be the man this year in goal. There will be bumps during the season but Suffern will prevail in all games. Yes everyone I said it, Suffern will go undefeated in League. Prediction on the Pelham game- Suffern 6 Pelham 2
I agree with Al here. I expect a lot of close games in League One. The team that eventually finishes 8th (someone has to) will likely have given even the first and second place teams a scare or two during the season. Very balanced league.
Professor, as another DII follower, I am rooting for Witz to get his 300th in the opener at SOR. Good luck. As for the end of the season, I expect my young Garnets to mature during season and battle your senior laden Pelicans at West Point in early March.
It’s Anthony Vertullo, Tom is for Thanksgiving.
fanotgame,
I agree with you, I think Rye is going to really come around by year end. In my opinion, I think Rye has one of the strongest goalies around, have him rated above Glaser but behind McIndoe. Rye’s goalie should keep them in every game and that’s KEY!
The problem that Rye will have, in my opinion, is scoring! With Eck and Rogers gone, they need someone to step up. Not to sure who on Rye is going to step in for Rogers and Eck?
Professor- Rye returns their number 2 and number 4 goal scorers from last season. In addition, Katsuta (AAA travel for years) should rebound from an injury plagued sophomore season. They are young at forward, but thankfully, have solid experience and talent at goaltending and at a few of the defense positions(the two places where you need it most to compete in League One). After the younger D men get acclimated and the younger forwards get comfotable shouldering the scoring load, they should have a good season. Until then, Matty B in net and Sganga patrolling the blue line will have to keep them in it.
whens the last time white plains won the section. i heard it was in the 70s. and who was on that team
White Plains was probably playing League 3 back then!
fanofthegame sorry to burst your bubble but theres a zero percent chance the 300th win comes in the opener. see you there
If Sigona had 78 points last year, and Rui had 75 points, what mathematical equation was used to total up to 178? It’s not like they used the Mamaroneck scorekeeper.
I like the wording…Glaser, toughest schedule in the COUNTY lol
That’s pretty funny about the Mamo scorekeeper. Let’s see how WP’s does when they don’t get to play Scarsdale, Yorktown, Brewster, Fox Lane and P/W/B/V twice each. Let’s see how they do in the Mamo games! HA HA HA
Great assessment Harold. You are one reporter who actually did his homework. Well done. Time to lace them up and get this ball rolling…uh..puck bouncing.
Pac over Mamaroneck in the finals. 3-2.
You heard it here 1st.
It’s common fact that the Scorekeeper is very free with giving points to the Mamaroneck players. I actually went to a game las tyear at the Hommocks saw Connor steal a pass, go down and score and the scorekeeper handed out an assist to Hagen. How funny!
RT/H should be in the top four this year. They’ve proved themselves every year while being predicted to finish dead last. They have some forwards with great speed and have always played a hard-hitting physical game.
max preps stats for mamaroneck home games last year: Always had at least as many assists recorded as goals. In the games where they scored less than 5, they often hit the max of 2X the number of assists as goals. Only in one home game vs Fordham was there the same number of assists as goals. Even in the high scoring games, way more than one assist was recored for each goal. In the JJ game, they had 14 assisits for 8 goals and 18 assisits for 13 goals vs. ETB. Now, I know from watchning them, that the tigers move the puck prety well, but that well???
Last season’s playoff finalist’s assists per goal ratios:
Mamaroneck: 1.7
Suffern: 1.6
Pelham: 1.5
Iona: 1.2
Rye:1.1
Stepinac: 1.1
word on the street is that rye town/harrison’s connor strozza is out for 3 weeks and conformation on that
My perspective on the awarding of assists is that it is somewhat subjective and often dependent on the ref’s focus on scorekeeping and any annotations by the on premises scorekeeper. Loking at the NHL, they seem to find ways to award almost 2 assists per goal. Thru post play video review, they often add assisits to the scoresheet during the game. Successful hockey is all about passing. My guess is that with the benefit of video review, the good Section One teams would average the ratios put out by Mamo, Suffern and Pelham. It may well be that the home scorekeepers for those well established programs focus on making sure their players get an assisit when it is due. A good coach will encourage players to share the puck, and may in fact encourage scorekeepers and refs to award such unselfish play.
giving assists where they are due is not the problem. fanotgame i agree with you that the other scorekeepers should strive to be like those 3 teams. the controversy is that mamaroneck( and yes they are the only team who everyone knows does this) gives assists, even 2 sometimes, on a breakaway goal where clearly there was no pass and it was one guy which for the past couple years was conner would take it down the ice.
Look how many assists Hagen got at home games versus sway games. It’s very clear that the scorekeepers objective s to pad their stats….....
Travel success doesn’t necessarily translate to varsity success. Mike Mamone would not be a great travel player but he is one of the best high school players in the section. Taka is probably a very good travel player, but his lack of size and inability to fight in corners makes him not as good as he is in travel. I’m not picking on him but he runs away from contact.
Ahhhh Sec1 fan- I hope we both get to see how those Rye forwards play in the corners as well as the wide open ice up at West Point.
If your kid plays against Bear MT on the travel level you will see him at West Point. Otherwise Rye just isn’t making it to the finals. Print out the post and pin it in the locker room.
sec1 fan,
Michael Mamone is not one of the best players in the section. Not even close. He is a solid player, not close to being one of the best.
Mike Mamone is one of the best Defenceman in the section. As I remember it neither him or his brother played much travel and his brother was the best defenceman of his time in the league. Sometimes these travel players come to their HS teams and think they are better then everyone else. Their selfishness really shows.
I`ll take him on my team anytime. Tough competitor
have the guns to do damage
i wasnt sayin WP would win this year i asked what year in the 70s did they win and who was on that team if anyone knows. i think it was 76 or 77
as a defenseman? He was all-league last year. I havent seen him play forward but he had 3 goals in their first scrimmage. He is tough, plays excellent fundamental defense, is smart, can handle the puck. He just doesnt have the ripper slap shot.
Taka is more than willing to go into the corners. Hes always taking hits and is braver than almost all the other players on the ice. He puts up with more on the ice than any player can dream of. He is the real deal.
We really need to stop knocking players and mentioning names, its not right for them to come here and read or hear anonymous people talk junk about them. Its not right. If its about a player and its not positive it really should not be written. If something needs to be said, we should not mention a players name. Thats my feeling.
16 in 12 away games
20 in 16 home games
Wow, entire League 1 preview in one day, thanks Harold! League 1 looks to be very equal and competitive this year, should be lots of close games. suffern and mamaroneck have an edge, but not by much.
goals for mamaroneck was hagen marr glaser johnson fine and jackson with 3
goals for mamaroneck was hagen marr glaser johnson fine and jackson with 3 in 8-1 over rye contry day
**Pac over Mamaroneck in the finals. 3-2. ARE U SERIOUS WOW Looks like someone has been hitting the Kool Aid a little early this year. I cant wait for the season to start its really funny how these comments come out and then people keep saying mamk is weak and should be the #3 team in League 1, just wait until next friday mark my words!; Mamaroneck over Jay 6-1 (give or take one goal)
wow section 1 fan you are probably just some scrub on a league 4 team or some dad who cant even skate. stop talking crap about other people.
I never said Mamone was a terrible player. I would take him on my team. He is a solid player. He just is not a top player in the section.
Seriously read the posts on this blog. it is truly sad how mean they are. Is this blog of any benefit to the kids? You should all be ashamed of yourself. kids taking smack is one thing but many of you are parents. Shut the F up please.
Hey Wow,
Definitely a newcomer… This is tame stuff so far.. If you don’t like it then try the blog for Girls Volleyball!
nope, not a scrub on a league 4 team, not a dad who cant skate. Lets keep on guessing.
so no one knows what year in the 70s they won or who was on that team then. im just curious. heard the team that won it back then was supposed to be pretty damn good
Hey section champ,
It’s not that no one knows, NOBODY Cares! And to be honest with you, I think you already know the answer!
exhibition game between pelham and iona, monday (11/24), ice hutch, 4:30
For those reporting on the Mamo/RCDS scrimmage, how did the RCDS goalie situation look?
Suffern 6 Pelham 2
Pot shots
Looking at the last few posts here is my humble opinion.
Someone took at shot at Hagen and points he recieved from a home scorekeeper. Hagen is a quality defender and has a great shot from the point and his team is a success so lets give him credit. Teams win because players perform.
Someone else chopped at Taka, same thing, successful team two time section champs, hes there, hes involved with that success. Yes he is not a physical force, but he figures into Ryes success. Someone else after Mamone at Pelham, one of top defenders in league 1. Pelham is a top club Mamone logs much ice for them and he is up against the other teams top forwards. Pelhams goalkeeping was suspect the last few years yet the team kept winning. Translation? good defense and team defense. Now the move him up to forward and he is a senior, he obviously is unselfish and wants to win to make that change now.
Regards to scorekeeping. The league assigns scorers. Yes Mamaroneck usually gets the same fellow. The refs control who gets what though. Its a pretty strong charge to accuse the scorer of over riding the refs on the sheet. I am not saying its impossible though
No trash talk about the RCDS goalie. Just whether he is undersized for varity as young underclassmen, or someone with a little more experience that can manage play in the schedule they have.
Scorekeeping….i though the same thing also. Doesn’t the ref award goals and assists, basically directing the scorekeeper what to record. I would find it highly unusual if a scorekeeper added an “extra” assist based on their own observation. I’d also think a ref would pick up on this and object.
If I am wrong someone explain better the process to me.
Pawling vs JFK….Tuesday November 25, 2008….4:15 PM…Trinity Pawling Rink…...Big rivalry! Pawling has a goaltender who played for JFK last year and JFK has a new forward who played for Pawling last year. Also there are a few people who go to JFK school but live in Pawling. A few of the kids on both teams play AAA travel hockey together out of Brewster. This should be a fun, exciting, hard-hitting game.
It’s a jealous Suffern parent that is complaining about stats. Mamaroneck has beaten Suffern in 4 different sports this past year (3 of them in the Section 1 Championship game). Stop bad mouthing Mamaroneck players!
Why don’t we stop bad mouthing all the players. The only reason people feel compelled to put down others or their choices is pure and simple JEALOUSY. And when it comes from adults, it’s really ugly.
WoW, I can’t wait until the season actually starts and Suffern goes undefeated. Suffern 5 Mamaroneck 3. Guaranteed.
You don’t have to take Michael Mamone on your team; he plays for Pelham and so what if he is not a travel player. The best thing about him is that he is all about T-E-A-M . He gives 150% in practice and games. Mamone is also a great leader and that’s why he wears a “C” on his shirt…...... him and Flory will provide the character and leadership necessary to have a nice season. No predictions here except that Pelham will work hard. I wish all the teams the best of luck this season. Let the kids enjoy themselves.
You never cease to amaze. How was Suffern involved with your precious points. The original blog above about the scorekeeper looked like it was a joke, based on inacurate stats in Harold’s recap about WP player’s. But you took it as a chance to spew Mamaroneck. Just keep seeing the world through rose colored seating sections.
Easy flash, Whoever trys to take down kids like that, players who control the teams destiny and especially if its Suffern Mamaroneck Pelham or Rye is full of hot air. If the team wins and has success look at the leaders those guys who get it done. Probably some jealous parent going at these movers and shakers on the top clubs
Lets call a spade a spade. The phantom assist and points have been a problem for years in high school scoring in the area. Some teams are known for it, some teams dont allow it. Sadly, scoring races have been decided by the extra 10 or 15 “points” that have been given out.
point leaders do not win championships
Right Hand Side…..you are a jealous Suffern parent who keeps bringing this under different screen names. Get over it. I think we know who you are.
Team wins are important in team sports not individual stats
section champ- as a Rye HS student at the time in question, I will try to help you out here. From what I can remember, WP and Rye were two of the top teams in the Section during the 75/76 and 76/77 seasons. Great rivalry. Not sure who won what, though. Here are some of the players I remember from the two teams: Rye: Duncan(later Trinity’s hockey captain), Thresher brothers from Canada, Smith in goal. WP: Longo, Blackwell brothers. That’s all I have.
is white plains hosting monroe-woodbury today at 5:15 at ebersole???
fanatogame thank you. i dont know how a question about WP winning the section 30 years ago gets misconstrued as me somehow talking up White Plains upcoming season. if anybody else knows anyone that played for white plains between 75-78 that would be great. all it is is me just being interested who was on that team when they were supposedly one of the top teams in the section. not trying to talk up white plains at all here
last season, a game at hommocks produced a score sheet with more assists (allowed) than the amount of goals scored..i believe it was 6 or 7 goals scored..and the team had either 13 or 15 assists haha…until someone posted it and they removed an assist lol
Stat Cheque…there you go again…you are a jealous Suffern parent. Get over it.
You must have some kind of w**dy for Suffern parents. You keep bringing them up. Can’t see in Right Hand Side’s post anything that would make him seem like a jealous Suffern parent. Honestly, can’t imagine what they would be jealous about when it comes to hockey. In your cloak and dagger world you care who the are. I’m sure they could care less who you are.
Max Preps vs. Offical Statistics
Max Preps seems ripe with mistakes. Some are very easily spotted, like players points being doubled. For example a TZ player from last year is listed as the section goals leader. While this player is a very good player, it is obvious his goals were mistakenly doubled. I highly doubt the coach did this and it’s more likely a Max Prep glitch. Some errors are more remote, I’ve noticed goals and assists credited to players on the Team Page, but invisible on League lists of scoring leaders under that players name.
Of course this is all a sideshow and wins and losses are what counts most.
Since in my opinion the Max Prep site has a degree of unreliability it begs the question, how are official stats recorded? Is their an official statistic kept at Section 1 headquarters?
If you are out there today, this seems like a good place for the very knowledgeable “Lohud Hockey” to jump in.
Since they seem to be getting all the good and bad shots taken at them, I’d take a Hagen and Mamone pairing as my 1st team D anyday.
As a Travel Coach in the region I will tell you that in many cases the best players on HS hockey play travel hockey.
The ones playing on Long Island see better Competition regularly.
Last year I saw Pelham Play Rye in the Finals and the defenseman that impressed me the most on Pelham was Harms.
He was a 9th grader playing with the poise and maturity to a senior. Every move with the puck was right on, sure and in a place that any coach would want it to go. That kid sees the ice and understands defense at a young age. This takes nothing away from the rest but if I am looking to find talented Junior A players or college level I am betting Harms would be a nice fit.
I did not see Harms in that game but I saw him twice and I agree. The best part about him I think is that he plays a team game. Even though he is a upper level travel player he plays with his team mates. Many times upper level travel players try to separate themselves and play without their team mates and they end up hurting the team. I am sure he has the ability to be selfish and play for himself but he plays for his team in the two games I watched. Credit him and his coaches and team mates for making it a good solid transition to play a team game
Looks like the Harms kid loves it. He was having a grand time on that team last year. I assume he was playing pretty regularly as a freshman on one of the top teams. They must have a lot of confidence in him and he deserves it. Pelham is obviously not afraid to play younger players and thats smart.
Yes, Al, I am out here and have been watching this discussion the entire time. I also have been purposely staying out of it for the same reason that we (at least those of us regulars) don’t mention any player’s names when we have something bad to say. This is a very touchy subject and it is far from new and far from being relegated to just Mamaroneck. I will try to be as diplomatic and neutral as possible at this point.
First, as for the “Official Stats” unfortunately, at this point, max preps is it. The scoresheet is kept during the game and after the game is over, each coach gets a copy and the section gets the third copy (Sometimes the scorekeepers will be nice enough to make Harold a photo-copy to help when he is working on his story, as well). It is up to the coaches to call the results into the Journal News and usually the coaches figure out which one is going to do it after the game. As for Max Preps, I am not sure if it is the JN that handles updating it or the coaches, but whoever does it there seems to be a lot of errors on it. I think a lot of the max preps problems are human error, it’s just a matter of figuring out what human is making the error.
As for the phantom assists, this is not directed at Mamaroneck & the Hommocks, since it happens everywhere in every level of hockey and is not relegated to League 1 or Section 1 or even HS hockey. It happens with the travel programs as well. There are many different sources of these phantom assists. One is the referees. They are out there watching a million things and the number of the kid who passed the puck to the kid who passed the puck to the kid who scored the goal is not always tops on their priority list. In those situations, some refs do the right thing and ask the coach or the kid who scored (or the kid who he knows got the first assist) who passed him the puck before telling the scorekeeper. Sometimes they will just give the scorekeeper one assist instead of two rather than trying to find out who it was and sometimes they may just get the number wrong (Give it to #74 instead of #47). There are also A LOT of kids out there who after a goal is scored, skate up to the ref and say “I got an assist on that one.” Some refs give it to them and some don’t. Some kids & coaches go directly to the scorekeeper and tell them to add an assist for xxxx to that last goal. The scorekeepers are supposed to tell the player or coach to take it up with the ref and if the ref says to add it, then they can. Some follow this rule, some don’t. There are other scenarios as well that I won’t get into, but needless to say there are many things that can contribute to this. So while I don’t know the scorekeeper who normally works the games at Hommocks, I can honestly say that jumping down that person’s throat may not be warranted, because if there is a problem, they may not be the source of it.
well spoken. thanks. it’s the game results that get totalled up to determine this, not who gets an assist on a goal nor how it was awarded. and stop bashing mamaroneck kids by name.
bottom line – mamo beats suffern for the section. suffern and mamo were the two best teams by a mile. same story this year. by a MILE!
if you really can’t get over the scorekeeper thing, why don’t you consider how much bench time mamo starters get (and how this effects their points) while the coaches regularly play 3rd and 4th lines of freshman and sophs as we’re cruising all season vs. pelham, white plains and rth.
Lohud, again you are the master!!! I too have been sitting here on the bench (like many suffern kids.. ha ha just kidding guys, you know I am there with you, been there done that) reading this garbage. Can’t wait til the season starts and we actually have something to write about..
I also will say that this will be one of the weakest Suffern teams that there has been in quite a few years.
“last season, a game at hommocks produced a score sheet with more assists (allowed) than the amount of goals scored..i believe it was 6 or 7 goals scored..and the team had either 13 or 15 assists haha…until someone posted it and they removed an assist lol”
Tiger fan,
Where in there do I mention Mamaroneck, Suffern, or jealously?
Here’s a quote for the season:
“paranoia paranoia everybody’s coming to get me”
a little schooling.. in the name field you put “your name” not the person you are responding to.. so obviously I didn’t write that second thing about suffern being weak
Lohud you are THE MAN !!
Like postman I am just lurking around looking forward to Turkey Day and games that count.
Harold – thanks for the updates….looking forward to leagues 2, 3 and 4. Keep ‘em coming.
Becarefull postman, I hope you would not make that statement.
and why would you think I would write that??? are you telling me you can’t tell the difference between what I write and someone just trying to start trouble..??? I do like the name, “mountie style” good one
Impersonating a postman is a serious offense.
As for Harms, he is technically a very sound player who makes great decisions. He has gotten bigger and should even get bigger, look at his brother. This year little Harmzy is going to be able to hit kids, giving some physicality to his shut down defense. Him and Victor Dzenis, big fast junior, will be the best D-Pair in the section.
And as for the Mamo statistician, there was an example of a goal with 3 assists this past year, I forget which game.
Let’s drop the talk of the Mamo statistician. Hey Mountie Style why don’t we meet at Sutters for a beer tonight.
Harold – any indication as to when the League 2 Overview will come out? thanks!
I just believe that the Suffern goalie situation is not ideal.
can i mention that this mountie style is not the real one. he is using my name. thank you
OK guys, Let’s start a new topic:
Which team has the Top forward line this year?
Within Leagues 1-4 and the CHSHL (Fordham, Stepinac and Iona)?
i think mamm based on experience has the top 1st line in the section. a lot of their power over the last few seasons has come from this group of kids. right behind them will be the suffern top line of hiller hill and jaeger. should both be putting up the top numbers in the section with a large gap behind them
mamk is over rated…they have a good 1st line average 2nd line and a hardly decent 3rd line…the 1st line is going to be the only line that produces for this team and thats not going to cut it in a league as competetive as the one they are in. Teams like suffern and even pelham will take advantage of mamks 2nd and 3rd lines.
suffern on the other hand makes up for in depth what they lack in pure skill…suffern has a lot of young talent, look for them to make a strong push for the section title in the next few years
Wow name, you definetely are not a player on suffern that was the most biased unbacked comment anyone could have said, have you played Mamk and all 4 of their lines? No you havent, keep your mouth shut until suffern plays them i’m looking foward to Glaser being a wall this season and your precious gabriel being embarassed at Hommocks
results of Pelham v RCDS?
wow wow, i am looking forward to suffern playin mamk at hommocks that would be a great senior night for u guys having a loss to suffern to end your season
and it looks like your a little biased toward mamk cause you had absolutely no reasoning behind anything you just wrote, not one thing you said had anything to back it up, you probably have never even seen gabriel play and your just assuming hes bad
im looking forward to this game big time
it was about 5-1 Pelham. Rye did not mount much of an attack. Got a weak goal on maybe Pelhams 3rd keeper. Pelham played several lines and looked solid.
For League 1
Not convinced that Mamaronecks first line is the best yet. They have alot of POTENTIAL but really haven’t proven themselves as THE #1 line yet. I’m sure once the season starts, we will find out FAST!
But at this moment, I would have to give Suffern’s first line the edge over Mamaroneck and Pelhams’s first line the edge over both Mamaroneck and Suffern.
For the CHSHL
If you look at all the stats from last year and look at the players that have returned to play this year, then I think the top line for the CHSHL and maybe all of Westchester & Rockland, might be Iona Prep’s first line of Cambria, Molinaro and Lopez. Last year they had 56 goals and 64 assists combined (110 points).
Cambria ( 21 goals and 31 assists)
Lopez ( 21 goals and 19 assists)
Molinaro (14 goals and 14 assists)
Does anyone know anything about the Eastcheste fist line?
I was at the Rye Country day Pelham scrimmage and Pelhams first line was nasty
sufferns 1st line is actually very good
hiller centering hill and nicholson
although nicholson didnt rack up a lot of time last year he has potential to do well on that line, and he is a perfect fit for hill and hiller…and i dont think i need to justify why hill and hiller are on that 1st line, they each made it clear that they are 2 top players in the section after last season
the best 1st line in the section is CN’s with Willows, and Kapnick (i think the 3rd forward is Kapnick) ... no question! but i will agree that the others (Suffern, Mamaroneck), have CN beat on depth
sorry, i meant in my post above the st line of Willows, Shuman and Kapnick – i left out Shuman above
I definitely agree with you, CN’s first line of Willows, Shuman and Kapnick is the best line by far in Section 1.
Using the Postmans name is a Federal Offense.
Pelham will run the show. Get ready boys and girls. Next saturday you will see.
I am glad to see the Ramapo’s Finest on the case of the “Postman Impersonator”. As far as the season goes the pressure is on Mamo they have the target on their back this year. I do not think they are up for the challenge, Suffern wins the section.
I come in to work, check the blog and see several more imposters!!! Might have to change my name… those of you who know me will recognize it.. BIFF, there is evidence there that can prove that it was not me writing at 4:37 and 4:38, here is a hint.. high caloric drink….
ID-11 and ramapo’s finest, you may also see the evidence..
real postman, at 4 in the afternoon you are drinking LI Iced teas? no wonder the financial services industry is in such disarray. It really is disheartening that idiots use the name of other regular bloggers either because they are too dumb to figure out how to blog correctly or they want to create confusion and controversy. if you want to start trouble, that is fine, just create your own name. I have a suggestion for your name: LOSER. it is pretty obvious that the real postman would not have said the things that were said by the postman wannabe.
postman wannabe is not nearly as smart as they think they are.. he made some major mistakes in his writing
It is with great regret I am officailly making my last entry as the original “postman”. Most will recognize my new name.
I am “the original postman” and I will not chnge my name.
Word on the street is that Porzio on Rye Town/Harrison will be the top scorer on their team this year with his lightning fast speed and quick agility. He will be a BIG asset to the team.
Titan- why would you put a students name in the blog that failed 2 classes. Is there something wrong with you. Maybe it is none of your business why the kid is not playing. It just shows that you have no class. And if you have a problem with what I just said , you can ask on the blog who I am, and you can find me usually a Sport-O-Rama. You moron.
i dont think any1 will go undefeated this season.
Suffern might have a solid team this year, but they didn’t prove it based on last years results. By mid January last year, before the moved Ruthberg to the second line, the first line accounted for all but 5 or 6 of their goals. Hiller is their only proven scorer coming back. They also lost the best goalie in the section. They would be wise to wait until they win some games before they anoint themselves.
Also, although I’m a WP fan, this comment has nothing to do with WP.
I SECOND THAT RAMAPO’S FINEST.
Love the disclaimer at the bottom WP Fan 2.
The only 2 I’m sure are on it are Hagen, who is better then anybody on mamo’s 1st line and Sherding who is just as good as anybody on mamo’s 1st line, and i’m not sure who is the last guy will be. I’m not picking on mamo, i just know the people from their 1st line as well as the 2 i mentioned from ETB (and dont know anybody from suffern or CN). And i was comparing them based on individual skill i dont know which lines will have good chemistry and which wont. And no i did not say ETB had the best 1st line in the section, just answering an earlier question.
OK. Enough about ETB. This is the 3rd year in a row you guys are saying how great they are and then once they play a real team in the playoffs they get completely dominated and smoked.
Postman, this or next will be the season you and the rest of the league 1 biggots are surprised. if you know the facts, you know that ETB back 3+ years ago was the worst program in the section. 2 yrs ago they had an influx of 6 freshman who are “quality” travel players, and have moved up the ranks rapidly, loosing mainly to only top teams come playoff time. WELL GUESS WHAT, they are no longer young and small. In addition, the current freshman class is even better. This team has 8 players who currently play on nationally ranked triple and double A programs and IS the best skating team in the section. Granted goaltending may be an issue, and I understand that can be a big problem. This group will be outrageous next year as they will only lose 1 core player, and the quality freshman will have a year under thier belt, as will the current freshman goalie. We will see as the year goes on. If you are smart you will lay off of picking on this team they may become your worst nightmare, stay tuned!!
Monday Pelham vs. Iona followed by Rye vs. ETB. Pretty interesting back to back scrimmages (yes, they are only scrimmages)at the Hutch. I am well aware of Iona’s firepower and Pelham’s top notch senior class. Looks like ETB may be another version of Iona (strong skaters protecting inexperienced goaltending).
One comment and suddenly its “enough about ETB.” Meanwhile, these suffern parents use the blog to plan which bar they are going tonight. I’m not even on ETB i just know alot of their players and i made it clear it was an observation about their 1st line and nothing else. That being said they would be the best team in the section if they had a good goalie… but they dont (And if the travel conflicts were resolved too). I dont know if that was the “real” postman or not but you definately fit the characteristics. Dumping on any team that isnt in league 1, and for that matter, any player that isn’t in L1 cause that is the major league and everybody else is a scrub in the minors.
Who do you people think are gonna come in first place in section 1? Who do you think is going to be the most surprising team?
I think the top 5 teams in the section and in particular order wud be mamaroneck suffern pelham rye and rth. The most surprising team will be Clarkstown north as they are the x factor of where they will fall considering there in league 2. Dont think they have enough depth to beat mamaroneck or suffern but i cud be very wrong. I also heard alot about pelhams first line. Should be interesting how they match up with suffern. I think rye won’t be as strong as last year and pelham just got stronger. They will be teams that will surprise us and teams that will get beaten again like last year and just a joke to play
Mam’k….how do you leave WP out of that list when they have beat both RYE & RTH for the last two years. It will be very interesting this year to see how the chips fall as they say since the graduating seniors of last year are gone. A great group who played hockey well, from league 1 to league 4. There was talent at all levels…..now don’t get your panties in a twist over saying there was talent in all leagues becaue you league 1 followers are just biased. A player does not choose his league but it does not mean he is not a talented hockey player!
Good luck to all teams in whatever league you play in!
Eastchester
November 17th, 2008 at 9:20 pm
How did Eastchester do against Stepinac last night in their scrimmage?
@hockeyboy
“Porzio is an excellent player, but he’s likely the second best on RTH. A kid by the name of Dean Brancucci is porbably the best on the team, and will be the section leader in scoring. By simply watching him it is possible to see that he will go to the NHL and challenge Sidney Crosby for the MVP award,” claims Dean’s parents.
Hey Pooper,
That’s a bit inappropriate.
Mamaroneck 13,Easy To Beat 1
Titan and Hockey Boy,
Please feel free to let your real name and email be shown if you are willing to post students names on the blog and discuss their academics and/or mock them. If you can name them..name yourself. You are both cowards.
Agreed. ETB has some top flight players. so…....when are they going to cut the crap and go on their own and break up the three school merger? It obvious that they have talent and maybe they can do what other small schools like Rye Pelham and ossining do and stand on their own two feet. Whats the excuse for the merger now?
3 schools, but 0 goalies.
Enough with the ETB stuff im tired of hearing Hagen and Sherding are better than Mamk’s first line, if they were so good and were on nationally ranked teams how come hagen only put up one goal against mamk last year, i mean if he is truly a travel superstar and on such a prestigious team he would be able to do something, but guess what he didn’t. I was at that game and quite frankly i wasn’t too impressed (along with the rest of the team but thats another story) Jackson Fine and Glaser will be putting up big numbers and will be strong, i can guarantee that the line will score more in league 1 than Hagen’s line will in their league. Enough said lets leave it at that
ETB top five is better than mamo’s five
Hagen is better than any player on mamo this year
you needed a Leon Washington Kick Return TD, an onside kick, and a Favre to Cotchery TD pass to compete in the playoffs last season
Lets say there was a magical land and Glaser was the goalie for mamo and ETB in that playoff game. What would the score have been? The shots were about even that game. And 2 years ago when ETB was in L5 and played mamo, wasnt the score only 4-2. ETB could be the deepest team in the section this year but they dont have goaltending so they are not going anywhere.
Two years ago etb was league 5 and lost 5-2 to mamo but etb had a very solid goale in net who they lost the next year due to graduation, and had no one to replace, etb lost 13-1 to mamo but that score dosnt truly represent the quality of the team, they are solid on offence with sherding hagen… , and ciotti and mcnamara are two of the best defenceman around we just have to see if someone can step up in the goaltending position in order for them to succeed
good team or not the merger should be over. Its a bit much now. Let the three schools, which incidentely are bigger than Rye and Pelham, fend for themselves. Eastchester should stand on its own. Lets see how they do against teams while they are standing alone. The mergers are for teams in trouble, Etb does not look like they are in trouble
Not sure if Tuckahoe and Bronxville are bigger than Rye and Pelham. Eastchester is, but I`m sure Tuckahoe and Bville are in the same ballpark with Rye and Pelham
Tuckahoe is MUCH smaller than either. Bronxville is smaller than both, but not by that much. I think if Bronxville and Tuckahoe were combined they would be about as big as Pelham.
either way that merger is a joke
Who cares about all of this…the most exciting game all yr is going to be the suffern alumni game much more fire power in this game that you we will see in NYS all this year!
If they play against the current varsity team that game is not legal. Hope they are not that dumb
Like playing in a spring or fall league game is okay? Who are you kidding?
New alumni play against old alumni
well the old alumni better watch out…the youngins are gonns be wheelin around this year!!
Can’t we all just get along? Watching these kids play is a wonderful sight and nothing else matters. Why can’t we be friends?
The color of your skin don’t matter to me
As long as we can live in harmony
I’d kinda like to be the President
so I can show you how your money’s spent
Why can’t we be friends?
shut up Wynne
Its illegal if its in the actual high school season. If its before or after its ok.
Why is it that you who bash the merged programs only do so with ETB, why not RTH or others. ETB is actually the most logical merger, these are the 3 school districts in the town of Eastchester. These kids grow up playing all rec sports with each other and live in the same town. To those of you debating the size of the schools, Tuckahoe is the smallest district in the section, maybe the state, and can never field a team, which one of you detractors would like to inform these kids it is over, please come foward and stop hiding behind fake blog names and immature, uninformed statements(ie… Tuckahoe and Bronxville are the size of Pelham and Rye, not even close!) . ALSO, why now, when the team is making strides and has played together for a few years to get to where they are. Can we infer that you only can be a merged program while you are losing, but once you overcome and start to win you need cease and desist, great message from what I am sure is a group of negative people with no real direction except to stir things up with with empty statements. When one of these programs domonates in an unfair manner you have an argument, until then you have no case.
All mergers are bogus. Every other team stands on their own. Let the coaches recruit to build their programs like everyone else has had to do
Why don’t you tell us what you think of the kids who love to play this sport and are in districts where there is no chance of fielding a team, why shouldn’t they have a chance to play? Seeing that you are a skeptic, and taking your statements into account I am sure you feel it is a tactic to put together an unfairly competitive team, where that is the case it is wrong. Where the intention is to give kids who would otherwise not have a chance, it is right. Let’s look at the facts. Merged teams are giving dozens of kids a chance to play, no merged teams have won ANYTHING, nor are they competing unfairly with anyone. If I am wrong please cite examples, otherwise, please put some substance behind your posts!
Harold, wheres the league 2 preview
haha sec 1 fan….sorry ur son is a superstar!
new topic:
top 5 goaltenders in the league 1?
Sec.1fan
Sounds like your in a bad mood, but that will probably be for most of the yr.Thats the best you could do,
Nothing to complain about yet?
After what I heard about the Suffern opener sounds like the Alumni game was better.
top players in league 1?
There’s some more information here if anyone’s interested
Great article. I found some more information here
