CHSHL/RCDS overview

November
21

The CHSHL should be fascinating this year— just making the four-team playoffs at the end of the season could be a challenge. Iona Prep will still be strong, Fordham Prep and Chaminade are improved, Farrell and Stepinac are always in the mix and newcomer St. Anthony’s is a huge wild card. Two of those teams aren’t making the postseason. I’ve also included RCDS, who will be taking on public schools Clarkstown North, John Jay and Rye this year. Here are how the local private schools look, in alphabetical order.

Fordham Prep (11-12-1 last year, 6-9-1 CHSHL)

Last year: After a 3-6-1 start, the Rams won eight in a row, and then closed the season with six straight defeats, including a two-game sweep versus Iona Prep in the semifinals.

Forwards: Michael Spillane, James Murphy and Anthony Policastro comprise a senior first line. Spillane was on the first line when Fordham Prep won the championship two years ago, and is the team’s leading returning scorer (20 points) despite playing defense for part of last year. The junior second line of Brendan Masullo, Jonathan Renza and James Evers has looked great in the preseason, scoring six of the team’s eight goals in the first two scrimmages. Two more solid lines provide depth.

Defense: Anthony McGuinness is steady in the defensive end and seldom gets beat. James Brown, Jaime Rivera and Spencer Granelli round out a solid core of defensemen.

Goalies: R.J. Fusco and Nick Guberti are both back after stepping up as freshman. They split time evenly last year.

Outlook: While last year’s team had just three seniors, this year’s group has 11, which should even out the extreme ups and downs the squad had last season. Sidenote: Two big highlights on the schedule. A game in Madison Square Garden against Farrell next Sunday after the Rangers game, and a game against Rye for the first time in a long time (30 years?).

Iona Prep (18-10-2, 12-2-2)

Last year: The Gaels didn’t lose a league game until Jan. 7 against Stepinac, who remained the only CHSHL team to beat the team all year. Iona Prep had the last laugh, a 3-2 overtime win in Game 3 of the finals.

Forwards: Mike Cambria, who had 52 points last season, uses his speed and skating ability to create scoring chances and set up teammates. Rob Molinaro is a physical presence who is good along the walls and might be the team’s best skater, and Alex Lopez (40 points) can also put up a lot of points. New varsity players Luke Lynett and Tommy Nolan should provide depth.

Defense: Myles Gillespie brings a lot of toughness, while Matt Kirincic is an offensive-minded defenseman who makes a good first pass and jumps into the play. Together they make a great first line. Because of forward depth, Sean McArdle and Gerard Traficante are moving to defense this season.

Goalies: Junior Kevin Kaiser and sophomore Joe Gizzo are fighting for the starting job, and coach Tim Turnbull said he would play whoever’s hot.

Outlook: The Gaels have to replace first-team all-stars Cody King and Kevin McCabe and goalie Stefan DiMario. But there is a lot returning, including 12 seniors. How old faces adjust to new roles—and how the goaltending situation works out—will be the keys.

Rye Country Day (11-9-5)

Last year: After a 3-1-2 start, the Wildcats went 5-2-1 down the stretch to finish above .500.

Fowards: Ryan Blatt, a two-way centerman, is a strong skater with a good shot who can play the physical game as well. Shane Bingham has good size and is an excellent forechecker who can chip in with scoring, while Jeff Horowitz is a tremendous skater and playmaker and freshman Henry Beshar has moved up the ranks. Chandler Grinell and Jordan Kemp are also strong returners.

Defense: Four-year starter J.P. Garry is a good puck mover who can log a lot of ice time. Cole Kleinberg likes to carry the puck and is a good offensive defenseman. Eighth grader Michael Rocco has looked strong after joining the program this year, and junior Tomo Yokose is a converted forward who is moving back.

Goalies: Eighth grader Omeed Alidadi and freshman Steve Halperin both played in the middle school program last year and will battle for the position.

Outlook: Despite some high-profile transfers, including the starting goalie, RCDS has some veteran talent and will be competitive in a tough league.

Stepinac (17-9-1, 12-3-1)

Last year: The Crusaders won 10 of 12 entering the finals, then lost a heartbreaking three-game series to rival Iona Prep.

Forwards: Thirty-goal scorer A.J. Datino is gone, but Rocco Miano had a breakthrough championship series, scoring four of the team’s nine goals, and Ryan Rueda is a tireless competitor. Frank Magnone completes a solid first line.

Defense: This should be the team’s strength. Kenny Kauffman is steady as a rock, while Anthony Reagan provides an offensive punch. Freshman Lance Holloway and Mike Misotonis are both strong options, and Steven Yankowski can be used as a swingman.

Goalies: Freshman Mike Lanero is very solid and a good mover. While no one can replace Joe Reagan, coach Pat Scanlon said that the Bronx native is on par with where Reagan was as a freshman.

Outlook: Stepinac may not have quantity, but it has quality. It was a formula that worked last year, when it rode a short bench to the cusp of its first title. They’re a hard-working team who shouldn’t be overlooked.

  1. postman

The CHSHL is awful and RCDS is bad. Also no one cares.

  2. chshl

Hey postman, relax! Why so bitter? Someone does care about CHSHL, in fact many do. You don’t have to follow it if it doesn’t pertain to you. This blog is not just for League 1,2,3 etc. Try being civilized instead of cynical. It’s just not right to insult kids.

  3. The Fugitive

    CHSHL,

If you are not aware, their have been numerous “postman” impersonator posts on the blog of late.

Not to be confused with the real postman who while very pro Suffern, has never knocked other kids, schools or leagues.

  4. Ramapo's finest

I will vouch for the Postman. He never bashes the kids. He is very pro high school hockey.

  5. CHSHL Fan

It should be an interesting year. Iona has alot of weapons but their goaltending could be their downfall. Fordham has the goaltending but not the scoring power. Should be an interesting game between Iona and Fordham next Friday at Playland.

And for the Blogger who had nothing nice to say about the CHSHL, then try and play them. Most likely you can’t get a game because all the top teams in League 1 have already booked a game with them.

  6. postman

Suffern will beat any CHSHL team and RCDS for that matter.

  7. Iona 2009

I agree with the CHSHL Fan. This years Iona team will be very competitive. They will win many of their games and they will lose their share also. But the future for Iona is unbelievable. It’s my understanding that their JV program is loaded. They have 25 skaters who can really skate. They actually had 3 freshman and 3 sophmores players that could of played on the varsity team this year but Iona already had enough Junior and senior players on the Varsity.

This years Iona Varsity has 3 solid lines of forwards and defensmen. They have the skaters but need the goalie to step up.

Schedule is difficult: Suffern, Monroe Woodbury, St Antony’s, Fordham

  8. C'mon

Let’s be real. RCDS hasn’t had a team since the previous coach left the program to work in the NHL. A once dominant program that usually beat Brunswick and top prep teams now plays a watered down schedule and cannot compete against local teams. Even the teams locally they compete against, they would have a beaten years ago. The program that used to have a fully stocked Varsity and JV program can barely field a Varsity. Why has this happened? Some point to coaching, some point to kids going to other programs. But lets not keep saying RCDS is a top team and should be competitive… who do they compete with? Were they in playoffs last year? Didn’t they lose to Harvey?

  9. postman

It is with great regret I am officailly making my last entry as the original “postman”. Most will recognize my new name.

  10. RCDS

    yup
It is amazing how RCDS is such a great school and has such a great facility cannot keep hockey players in the school. Its own rink and solid education you would think it would do better. Its sad really, and it looks like the school maybe content with the current situation. I always love the pre season hype that comes out of that place about how great the team is and then they lose to public and catholic school teams. I hear all these stories about great the schedule is and they have no playoffs

  11. postman

This is the “original postman” and I am not changing my screen name.

  12. mimi

re: postman saying suffern will beat any chshl team and rcds

    hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  13. postman

Although I am pro Suffern I do feel that this year will be a let down year. The goalie situation is not good and I blame Schelling for not developing enough kids each year. My god he only plays 9-10 kids in a game.

  14. Righty

    Postman,

Most teams only play 9-10 kids each year. Even college and pro teams basically play three lines and 2 lines when it gets tight. Schelling has had a top program for years. I think its wonderful that a former Suffern player has been at the helm of the team for so much success.

  15. League 2

Harold – what about the League 2 preview?

  16. mimi

iona opens up tonight in coney island (against farrell at 10)

by the way, interesting to see white plains and monroe-woodbury go into OT and finish 1-1

also, remember, if anyone wants to see what this st. anthony’s team is all about, they play stepinac sunday at 8 in mt. vernon

  17. Righty

White Plains is going to be a strong team in league 1 and they return a team that knows their system and knows how to play hockey. There is 1-1 OT is not a fluke.

  18. postman

Righty….I believe you are correct. White Plains looks like they will challenge for a top spot in league 1 and they do have a slight home advantage by playing outdoors at Ebersole.

  19. chshl brah

there will be some payback that opening night in playland. fordham’s actions at the end of last years semi-finals were inexcusable! expect a very high scoring game and for iona to ultimately dominate them where it hurts the most, on the scoreboard.

  20. Iona 2009

    chshl brah,

Have to disagree with you. What took place last year isn’t even a thought in anyones mind. Both coaches have tight reins on their teams. Can not afford to get three game suspensions in the CHSHL.

It should be a good game and I think Iona will win 5 to 3.

  21. Mamo fan

Mamaroneck scrimages Ossining tonight at 5:30 P.M at “The Jungle”

  22. My Hockey Team

    Why would Mamaroneck play Ossining?

  23. Mamo fan

Why does Duke basketball play Virginia Union?

  24. Mamo fan

Mamaroneck also Scrimmages Fordham Prep on monday and Glen Rock High(N.J.)on tuesday before opening up the regular season against JJ next friday night.

  25. Not The Postman

Mamo vs. O is friendly thing between two veteran coaches. Happens every year. Both coaches have like 30 yrs experience.

  26. My Hockey Team

Not The Postman, thank you for your answer. Its amazing how some people answer questions with a question

  27. parents get out !

    iona 2009,

you are right to an extent. it probably is not on either of the coaches mind, but what about the players? better yet the players who were affected by that incident. im sure there will be a greater margin with RJ Fusco in net.

  28. Mamk Oss

Mamaroneck beats Ossining somewhere around 8 or 9 to 2 couldn’t tell what the real score was without them posting it, i lost track somewhere in the mix. Mamk looked very strong, played 5 deep lines of O very impressive. I do say i was quite dissapointed by Ossinning there was a lot of talk about the team beating both Fordham and Pelham, but i just didn’t see any real standout talent.

  29. Stepinac Fan

I can’t believe that the Coach from Stepinac made this statement below about Lanero being at the same level as Reagan as a Freshman. Way to DISS your past franchise player. He carried your JV and Varsity teams for 4 years. If it wasn’t for him, Iona would of killed Stepinac 10-2 in every game last year. He made you look good. I doubt your new goalie will has the results that Reagan had.

Goalies: Freshman Mike Lanero is very solid and a good mover. While no one can replace Joe Reagan, coach Pat Scanlon said that the Bronx native is on par with where Reagan was as a freshman.

  30. mimi

    varsity

iona 3, farrell 2 (kaiser in net)

    jv

    farrell 4, iona 3 (iona’s jv = VERY deep)

    bottom line, good competitive hockey…

    tomorrow’s st. ant’s-stepinac game should be interesting…

  31. CHSHL-Iona

WOW! It’s a great start. Giving up only 2 goals against Farrell really sends a message. Hopefully Kaiser can continue this great effort throughout the season. If he does then Iona could surprise St. ANthony’s and FOrdham.

  32. HockeyFan

    Harold,

OK Harold, season has started and we have been waiting a year. SO why son’t we have the SCORES AND STATS POWERED BY MAXPREPS up and running? LOL

As you know, Hockey Bloggers really follow their hockey. BUT SERIOUSLY, DO you have any idea when Sports Central will we available?

  33. cdf

because football is still going on

  34. mimi

iona-burke catholic tomorrow 6:15 at ice time in newburgh

  35. hockey

suffern vs. monroe woodbury, tomorrow 6pm ice time

  36. Righty

Stepinac Fan, thats not an insult ,,, its a compliment. Or is the coach not allowed to have anybody ever that can play.

  37. Ossining ??

Ossining played Rye, and Scarsdale in scrimmage. they did not scrimmage Pelham this year

  38. ???

Harold when are you going to preview leagues 2,3,and 4

  39. league 1 all day

when does the preview in the paper come out

  40. ?

On Varsity central there was a short article that said WP beat MW is that true?

  41. North

Clarkstown North looked good last night! They beat Byram hills about 6-2… Also beat White Plains a few nights ago..
They are a deeper team than people give them credit for.

Either that or Byram Hills is in bad shape again…

  42. mimi

    ?

    i believe wp-mr was a 1-1 final (including ot)

    hockey,

who plays this evening up at ice time? is it burke catholic/iona or monroe-woodbury/suffern? iona’s schedule says ice time today 6:20 against BC…

  43. mimi

iona/pelham exhibition tomorrow (monday) 4:30 at ice hutch

  44. Agree

North looked really good, the score was a bit higher though. more like 8-2. North absolutely is much deeper than they are given credit for. They have at least 2 solid lines, and GREAT goaltending. Should be a very interesting year for North! Good Luck to them!

  45. Player

I have to admit, Willows and Shuman looked unbelievable together! North should have a good year. I agree with the posts above they have two solid lines. and goaltending.

  46. iona

for everyone that said iona’s goaltending will be their downfall thats not necessarily the case. kaiser had 28 saves and 2 goals given up against a solid team, farrel. iona controlled the entire game with the exception of a 10 minute breakdown which, against a better team, could have been their downfall. either way iona is still there to compete with tons of scoring talent.

  47. righty

Isn’t Byram Hills in League 3? They essentially have a brand new team, brand new system and a brand new coach. I think the credit should go to Byram Hills. A great job by this team. In one game they are obviously a much better team than last year. I think the new coach has a new attitude for this team and they seem to play a much better much style of hockey.

  48. Westchester Hockey

I saw Iona JV play.. They have so many weapons, however there lack of chemistry hurt them. Give them a few games and they will be great.

^ just wait untill these freshman get older

  49. Iona JV

I predict the Iona JV will make all bloggers remember the boasts of the Stepinac JV posts of a few seasons ago.

    Here is a new topic:

08-09 Iona JV vs. Stepinac JV 06-07

    Who wins?

  50. CHSHL-Iona

    Hey Iona JV,

Don’t worry how strong our JV team is at this moment, but just think how strong our Iona program is going to be for the next few years.

The good thing is that Iona’s Hockey program is really becoming one of the Top programs in this area. And many of the top teams in the area (Suffern,Monroe Woodbury) want to play Iona. Why? because they can play a competitive game. They might not win all their games but the teams that they play know that the competition is good.

  51. CHSHL 08-09

Fordham vs Mamo tommorow at the Ice Hutch at 6. Should be interesting to see how Fordham responds to what is clearly the best team on their preseason schedule. The Rams are “3-0” so far in the preseason with wins against Somers/North Salem, Ossining, and Pelham.

  52. Iona

has a solid program with a solid coach. The only negative is the league they play in which they cannot control. The league is weak and is getting worse. There are way too many games against the same five teams. The lack of practice ice, no ice cuts in games, and the scattered schedule with games at four or five different rinks makes the league second class. Fordham and Iona have fought through it pretty well and maintain nice programs. Too bad both could not be in section 1.

  53. high school

    Please,
nobody wins a scrimmage. Give it a break. Fordham “won” because they scored more goals? Most coaches are not playing to win scrimmages, but want to look at players and game play. It sounds silly to say someone “won ” a scrimmage. You could say one team got the better of the play but even that is not really a barometer

  54. CHSHL

when i saw Iona jv team play, it looks like if they got a goalie they could beat some public high school teams.

  55. CHSHL-Iona

    Hey Iona,

Have to really disagree with you. This year, you might have 6 competitive teams in the CHSHL. To be honest with you the weakest team might be Stepinac. But, if their 9th grader goalie steps up, then they will be competitive also.

When you look at Farrell, St Anthony’s,Fordham ,Chaminade and Iona…...Which team is weak. Each of these teams could very easily skate with Suffern and Mamaroneck this year. So I ask you, why do you think the league is getting weaker?

Fordham, Stepinac and Iona play their games out of Playland, Ice Hutch or Murrays. And when they travel in the CHSHL , they play down in Coney Island.

Compare that to Sufferns local travel, they will go to Hommocks, Ice Hutch, Playland and Brewster. Is there really that much of a difference?

And by the way, All the teams in the CHSHL have two practices a week, which is no different then league 1 teams. ANd all the practices for Iona, Stepinac and Fordham are usually at the Ice Hutch.

I guess what I’m saying, is that someone is giving you wrong information about the teams in the CHSHL.

  56. mimi

    chshl-iona,

    agreed re chshl

the top division is basically stacked, leaving stepinac as probably the weakest team. if anyone wants to see what this st. anthony’s team is about, go to ice hutch tonight, as they play stepinac at 8

re facilities, you can’t really complain…the coney island facility has nice sized capacity and is indoor…this year chshl is premiering the brand new flushing facility, which is new and state-of-the-art from what i hear…

don’t want to make judgements, but looks like you might be looking to vent about a break-up or a lost bet today in nfl or something…

    fordham, playland
    stepinac, ice hutch
    iona, ice hutch
    farrell, coney island/new flushing
    chaminade, new flushing/syosset
    st. anthony’s, flushing

    that doesn’t look too shabby…

also, considering that probably half the B division (st. ed, st. joe, holy cross, st. francis, xaverian, xavier) can compete with most section 1 teams as well, its even more of a reason to question, really, what the heck are you talking about lol

  57. mimi

chshl iona, sorry, as the bulk of my prior post was to “iona”, not you…

  58. when

when was the last time any chshl team beat Suffern Mamaroneck Rye or Pelham. Those were the sectional finalist last season.
I would not think that st eds st joes hc are anything but league 4 section 1 teams

  59. Iona

good points by all. The scheduling still stinks playing the same teams four or five times. No ice cuts in between periods is not a good thing. No home ice, the only team that has home ice is Fordham they have that Friday night a Playland. Everybody else is all over the place, Murrays, Coney Island, hutch, etc
Oh and lets not forget, the refs. It usually the two brothers or the showboat from Manhattan

  60. refs

the 2 brothers r the worst refs ever to grace the ice of high school hockey games. they are awful. they work together in a collaborative effort to ruin hockey on a nightly basis. every game we play when we have them we know that our efforts are hopeless and that the final score will be determined on who can get away with more as well as who can be on the lucky side of totally made up calls. i’m talking about public school but the fact that private schools let them on the ice as well frightens me

  61. North

I didn’t even know CN had a scrimmage with Byram Hills, but kudos to CN for the win. What are North’s 2 forward lines? and who is on defense?

  62. dressler

    Righty,

Yeah, byram is league 3 but so what…
    North is league 2…

  63. My Hockey Team

    step beats St Ant’s 3 – 2

  64. CHSHL-Iona

Well it looks like the CHSHL has 6 competitive teams. Congrat’s to Stepinac’s goalie. Maybe they do have another Reagan.

  65. mimi

    correction

    stepinac 3, st. anthony’s B 2

lol can’t believe you thought it was st. ant’s regular team

  66. mimi

any score on the iona-burke catholic game?

  67. chshlposts

iona beat burke catholic 5-4. there was never more than a 1 goal lead. i have more faith in ionas goalies now. i missed the farrel game but i heard kaiser did extremely well. turnbull started gizzo tonight and he played a excellent game especially in the last 2 minutes. he must have had 30 something shots. the defense blocked a ton of shots as well and as expected the offence was impressive

  68. chshlposts

    an excellent*

  69. Oldschool

Interesting, so many of the players we are and will be talking about this season on the blog play for the Westchester Mariners. Kudos to Guberti for putting together such a great program. Their success only makes it easier to recruit for next season.

  70. fan

Let the excuses begin. St. Anthony’s B team. Funny that they have players from Apple Core Junior A team. Why would these players settle to be on a B team. The only letter they had tonight is L, and Step W.

  71. CHSHL

    That wasnt St.Anthony’s B team….

Whats ur excuse for the 7 TDs Jeff Mack scored against ur football team.

  72. Righty

yes, “dressler”, thats my point. CN should look good against a league 3 team and yet BH played pretty well.

  73. Win

Suffern beat Monroe Woodbury last night 4-2. Suffern played well, offense and defense. Gabriel was on his mark. Looks like he has the starting job.

  74. MR. HOCKEY

I agree “Win” thought suffern looked good last night. I think the lines are set but who knows what schelling will do. just 5 days to the start of the season!!! its going to be fun…

  75. postman

Monroe Woodbury is weak this year. Suffern defense looked weak. Goalie was so so.

  76. refs 55

Hey refs what are you talking about? The public schools and catholic scools do not use the same refs.

  77. refs 55

    sorry catholic schools!

  78. refs 55

    *schools

  79. no idea

Fake Postman – You have no idea what you are talking about

  80. postman

This is the real postman and I have said all along that the Suffern goalie situation is not ideal.

  81. from the burg

I THINK I MIGHT HAVE A PSYCHO STALKER ON MY HANDS.. RAMAPO’S FINEST, WHAT SHOULD I DO ABOUT THIS.. ??? I HOPE YOU ARE A KID AND LAUGHING, BECAUSE IF NOT YOU REALLY MIGHT BE INSANE

  82. Great Job Mariners

It’s probably become the go to program in Westchester.

  83. Great Job Mariners

I’d also say that the Saints seem to be doing a great job also with very strong Midget and Bantam teams.

    Now onto high school hockey!

  84. no idea

Fake Postman – you sound like a bitter parent, whose kid is sitting on the bench, so you have decided to bash others for your amusement, and I think you chose Postman’s name because you know the connection…. get a life

  85. postman

I see the Suffern parents have started to seperate themselves from each other again based on their kids ability. Top players parent’s only speak with other top player parent’s making the parents of the kid’s who see little or no ice time feel awful.

  86. Al Bundy

Oh boy…this fake postman’s sure sounds a lot like the poster last month complaining about that Suffern freshman taking ice time away from the older kids.

  87. thought

Maybe they just don’t like you fake postman, and by the things you have written here I am not suprised.

  88. Ramapo's finest

To the fake postman-I guess you are a Suffern parent, because you say Suffern looked weak. I guess you were at the game. The Suffern parents who speak on this blog, only talk positive. And we all know who we are. Oh and by the way, we know who you are to. I think you were out with us the other night.

  89. Stat Cheque

cant we all just go to sutters for wings and beer and talk jets/giants football?

  90. shs

    blue moons on rosto!

  91. fanotgame

I kind of miss the real postman.

  92. LoHud Hockey

I second that. Fake postman, please stop posting using that name. It’s obvious to all of us regulars which postas are from the real postman and which are from you, so why bother using his name? Travel Team already changed his name over the summer, we don’t need another regular to go through a name change.

Either that or the real postman should start using “The blogger formerly known as postman.”

  93. MR. HOCKEY

    LOL,.. that is good LoHud!!!

  94. WOW

Seems like the bloggers don’t like you either, fake postman. YOu must be a real winner. Why don’t you just go away!

  95. MR. HOCKEY

I do however agree with postman that Suffern’s goalie situation is disturbing. They are going to miss Natoli much more than people realize. The defense is also not the same as last year. This in fact is a rebuilding year for the Mounties. Sorry that is how I see it.

  96. Biff

Real postman has already moved on to a new name. LoHud Hockey, have you figured out what the new name is? fake postman (who apparently wants everyone to believe he is the original postman) can have the name and use it exclusively for complaining and negative comments. all I know is I am going to Sutters with Stat Cheque and shs, to talk Giants Jets football and have Rosto buy me blue moons. what’s better than that?

  97. Eeeeeeeek

Some blogs do make you register and therefore, people can only use one name connected to a profile. The bad effect is that it limits the people that can comment and that post and slows the interactions and free expression. The positive is that we will know who the real Postman is. Now to go along with the list of postings on the blog that will be more annoying, lets have some posts to aggrevate everybody…

    – Phantom assists – The merits of travel hockey – AC?? or whatever that club hockey league is that is said to be like league 3 – RCDS does not play in a real league and is not a power house – Bashing kids, kids grades, their schools or their parents – You are allowed to base how cold Ebersol gets – You are allowed to discuss which rinks have the best food (I tip my hat to the Pizza at WSA. – Which rinks have the worst coffee (could be several in the running)

or maybe we should concentrate on the fine sport of hockey and the teams and kids that play it (without bashing the kids)

  98. no idea

Fake Postman – now Fake Mr. Hockey….
    we know who you are…
You should be ashamed of yourself! The only way you can feel better about your kid not playing is by knocking another kid who is. You don’t belong at the games in the stands with the rest of the parents who support the WHOLE team, not just their own player. Maybe that is why NO ONE wants to sit with you and listen to you whine….

  99. RM

he took it again, I think he wants me!!!

  100. Eeeeeeeek

Ouch, fake postman..that sounds like you got called and rather personally.

  101. mimi

At the ice box (hutch) to watch the iona-pelham scrimmage…will post shortly…

  102. fanotgame

mimi- you sticking around for the triple header? Fordham/Mamo and then ETB/Rye after Iona/Pelham. Those might be 6 of the top dozen or so teams in the area playing back to back to back. Yes, ETB deserves to be included in that kind of discussion.

  103. 6 plus hours of HS Hockey

Fanotgame you must really love HS hockey to watch 3 games in a row of scrimmages today. When your kid graduates next year you will need a support group.

  104. Who Cares

Scrimmages are great to have. Do you really think that Iona or Pelham care about these scrimmages. It’s like a practice. You get to work on your power plays, you get to work on your penalty kills and you get to play kids who are trying to get extra playing time.

Iona has already played two games this season ans has won them both. So I’m sure their coach is going to work on line combinations to get more scoring and get them ready for this weekend when they play Friday, Saturday and Sunday. And I think that Witz is probably doing the same thing with his players.

I don’t understand why everyone is so concerned with the scores of these scrimmages. It means nothing! That’s why they call tem SCRIMMAGES! So WHo Cares!

  105. Mamk

quick question. if you lose in ot does it count as a lost or as a tie? bc i know if u lose in a shootout, it counts as a tie.

  106. hockey man

Iona Vs. Pelham… didnt Pelham lose some young kids to Iona

  107. mimi

i know a scrimmage is a scrimmage, but jesus, iona (and i’m sure the best of the others) just plain out doesn’t care lol

i think turnbull scheduled this scrimmage and the burke catholic/harvey games just to get those 3rd/4th line kids and those bunch of healthy scratches some ice

left after 10 minutes…at least i live close and didn’t waste more than a gallon…

  108. mimi

looking forward to the triple-header weekend for iona, all local

    fordham friday
    chaminade saturday
    st. anthony’s sunday

  109. hockey man

wait . Iona was looking badd… was lopez, cambria , and molinaro there or what? I feel that a real game between iona and pelham, iona would come out on top

  110. Rule Check

if you lose in the 5 min OT its a loss. Shootouts are only when one team has to advance, i.e. tourney, and it is a tie

  111. "Kick the Tires....

....and Light the Fires”. It’s Hockey Time-Let the Games Begin-It’s Put up, or Shutup. AHHHHHHH.

  112. 2?

harold when is the league 2 preview coming out

  113. parent

It bothers me that these suffern parents can talk about consuming alcoholic beverages on a highschool hockey blog. We should be role models for our kids. It is absurd harold and should be taken down

  114. Triple heada

Was at the Ice Hutch tonight for the triple header. I am partial to the catholic league. All six teams looked good. Iona and Pelham looked good. Pelham has an explosive first line they are smart and patient with the puck. Iona was real fast up front and the goaltending was good. Pelham played some kids and Iona played kids and everyone held their own out there. Fordham was good but Mamaroneck was better a key Mamaroneck player was injured not sure of his name but he was off to the side on crutches. Mamaroneck looks pretty deep with good lines. The tall defender shoots bombs from the point. Fordham hung in and it was a good one to watch. Rye got the better of Eastchester Tuk Bvill but that first unit East has is good. Rye was strong in all areas and in goal It was a good preview with ood teams and good hockey

  115. hshockeyfan

I heard the Mamo/Fordham game was only 3-2. If that’s true that’s not good for Mamo. Even though it was only a scrummage.

  116. In the stands

was only a scrimmage Mamo 4-2, and outshot fordham by alot 2nd half of scrimmage, played 45 minutes running time, was good for both teams!

  117. In the stands II

What becomes obvious to someone who is impartial is that there is little difference between Iona, Fordham, Pelham, Mamaroneck and Rye. ETB needs a few more horses but the other teams have good lines and D men and in some cases good goalies.

  118. Mamk- Fordham

I heard it was 5-2 Mamk win

  119. Tigers

Also, Jackson was out of the game vs. fordham, hurt is leg, might miss the opener at the “Jungle” on friday vs. John Jay

  120. good programs

all have good programs good coaches good players. was good hockey tonight

  121. scrimmage

i agree with mimi. iona just did not care today lol. i saw the game…not bad on either side. i follow iona and the offense was quick tonight, but they go through various ups and downs-5 minutes they score 2 goals, the next there trying to clear it out of the zone. iona defense-not bad, not spectacular yet. from what i have seen in the last few games, i think iona has patched up their goal tending issues due to a good game by kaiser against farrel friday, and a good game by gizzo against burke catholic sunday. tonightiona was not amazing, but i’m sure its due to the lack of seriousness in the scrimmage. If that were a league game i think the scoring would have been more on par as well.

  122. Journal Article-Professor

    Hey Harold,

Great article in today’s Journal about Life after High School Hockey. I hope all parents who have kids playing hockey read this issue.

The article basically says,Hockey after high school is almost impossible. I give these kids alot of credit considering that after 3 years of going to Prep School or playing juniors, the fact is that there’s a good chance that they will be lucky to make a D3 program.

Don’t get me wrong, a D3 program is FANTASTIC! but most likely that’s a very far reach also.

Look at last years top players:

    Connor: No longer playing hockey
Rui: Make Applecore and then got cut
Salt: Made University of Michigan’s club Hockey team Reagan: Playing Juniors (doing well but nothing special)
Natoli: Playing Juniors (doing well but nothing special)
King: Made Boston College’s Club Hockey team (Doing well)
    Eck: Not playing hockey
    McCabe: No longer playing hockey

Bottom line, it’s so competitive out there! So enjoy High School Hockey because there’s a good chance that after High School, many of the kids will no longer will be playing. So as a parent, enjoy because these great times are going to end for you also.

  123. another great post Proff

Professor, another great qoute. Nothing is guaranteed out there. Nothing at all. Theres so much competition and you need some luck and some breaks. You have to really objectively evaluate your potential. Its hard to do but you need to in order to make the best decision. Club hockey is getting stronger because players are starting to realize that juniors after hockey is no guarantee to the promised land. Natoli Rui Conner and Salt all dominated the high school scene and they have either not made it or have a tough road to go. Think of the kids that do not dominate high school hockey? They have little chance. We hope they see that objectively and make good decisions

  124. fanotgame

Didn’t make it to see Iona vs. Pelham, but from what I know, they are very similar teams. Mamo/Fordham was a very even scrimmage, with Mamo getting the better of the play at the end and scoring most of their goals there against the second Ram goalie. Not sure who was in net and when for Mamo. Jackson on crutches may have afected the Mamo’s top line. ETB’s third goalie (a freshman, I heard) was very sharp. Whenever Hagen was on the ice, he created havoc. Otherwise, the puck was in ETB’s zone, even with Rye palying 3rd and 4th liners. ETB could be a League 2 force if Hagen makes a lot of games and the freshman goalie matures.

  125. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT

Journal Article – Professor & Harold

Rui was not cut from Applecore but asked for a release so he could be traded to the New Jersey Rockets, as that coach is “the real deal” and has proven results for getting his players their dream! D3 or D1 club could have been both Rui or Tom’s choice right after high school but that’s not what they wanted. Their dream is the same, to play D1 NCAA hockey. It is a long hard road to get there but I believe they will both make it. Good Luck to you both…..if you don’t have dreams…..what’s left? Give them the credit they deserve for dedicating their entire juvenile and young adult life to playing the game they love and for going after their dream by giving up far more than most teenagers
    could ever imagine!

  126. Hitmen

I can vouch for the last blogger. I tried to contact Applecore’s main guy to inquiry about a showcase and getting some of his players to colleges. I had worked on some college coaches to get them to some showcases in mid December when their schedule is light because of college finals. I never heard back from Applecore. It seems the Jersey Junior teams are the way to go now. A lot of the players Applecore has sent to high levels got their because of Their HNIB performances, or they PG’d at prep school after applcore.

  127. Realist

Who really cares what happens. If any parent thinks that their kid is going to the NHL, or even to play college hockey, at any level, they are crazy. The problem is, this tri-state area is not a mecca for hockey. These kids have been playing hockey for so long, and had to deal with the idiot parents all throughout high school. Then they go away to college. Its usually the first time they have been away from mommy. Then they get a taste of the life without rules, they find out that they are really not that good. So they say, why am I breaking my chops, still getting up early playing for this club hockey team. 9 times out of ten, they quit or they come home. . They get to the school and there is nobody their to wake them up, make their breakfast, clean their clothes, make sure their hockey equipment is cleaned, and last but not least, remind them to “skate hard”. Basically what I am saying is, the kids around here are not bred to be hockey players. And if you really think all these has been ex-pro hockey players that are charging you $100.00 dollars and hour really cares about your kid, you are mistaken. If they were that good they would either still be playing or teaching at a higher level. Someone who reads this might say I sound disgruntled. I am not, I am a realist. My kid still plays, and I love to watch him. The bottom line is, when March rolls around, he probably will never play hockey again. Unless he decides to play on a mens league.

  128. LOL

you are not a realist, you are probably someone who hasn’t done anything special with your life. Nobody has ever said on here that they think their kid is going to the NHL, there are a small few that have a “shot” at playing D3 or D1 hockey, yes it is a long shot but a shot! I say if you have a dream, go for it. You might not make it, but at least you gave it your best and actually know where you stand. Without that you may wonder the rest of your life “what if”. I have a feeling you have a lot of those in your life “realist” and all you know now is that you never accomplished anything or looked at something just out of reach and said “I am going to do this”.

  129. C'mom Realist

    Realist,

You are disgruntled. There are several coaches; especially, former pros that coach because they care about the kids. You may have paid the wrong guy.

As we mentioned several times on this site. The next level is a huge and hard next step, Rarely, does anybody go from HS to College D3 not mention D1. Most college coaches want a kid that has spent PG year or a year or two in real juniors (USHL). Kids need to make the commitment to do so and its not easy to do when all of your friends are either at college or going out with friends. The path to the next level is very hard. Think about how many high schools there are in this area lone and then look at how many college college there with programs…there is a tiny funnel to move on to the next stage. These kids have dreams and they should be allowed to dream. Kids have pulled it off. Mike Dario (RTH) went as true freshman and made his D3 team, other have done it. Do you need coaching that knows how to get guys there, do you need commitment of course, do you need to dream, of course.

  130. Mamo

when our top players were on the ice Mamo totally dominated Fordham. goalie Luke Glaser was outstanding and the top defense totally shut down Fordham and when the top players were on the ice for Mamo the play was pretty much one sided. Brett Jackson was hurt but will be back soon. scorers for Mamo were Scott Hagan with 2, Christian Glaser and Sean Hagan had 1 each.

  131. Hockey Mom

Realist you sound disgruntled because your wife takes better care of her ‘baby boy” rather than you! Stop stomping on others views and dreams…..you need to dream a little yourself and maybe you would have something to look forward to! lol lol

  132. YO Realist

I hope that your offspring learned to set an alarm clock, feed themselves, and perform basic hygiene by the time they have graduated from high school. Begin a life without rules, wouldn’t that be anarchy. LOL

  133. high school

This discussion is as old as the blog. Lets agree to disagree. There are people who believe that metro kids can make it. Some have. There are others who think its not possible. Parents play a huge role. The parents are the guides. Parents need to have an objective eye, and need to make sure that their son stays on track. The parent also has to know when to fold up the tent and go home. The parent also needs to weigh weather the time and money are worth it. Junior hockey is big business. The gap is closing between club and d 3 hockey and soon the club spots will be as tough to get as the d 1 and d3 spots. I think if a player wants to take a shot go for it. Who could disagree with that? However you cannot let your imagination get the best of you. You should be the top player in our area on your high school or travel team and in your league. If your not at that level around here then its hard to think you could go to the next level.

  134. ECACST

If the NCAA had a true freshman rule then you would see more 18, 19 year old on the ice for DivI and Div III schools from our area. Not sure why the NCAA does this but 2-3 years of juniors really hones the skills required to play NCAA College Hockey. Size and speed and skills improve under competitive play in Juniors better coaching and in general maturity makes for the aspects required.
There are those Shattenkirks of the world who can go from Prep to BU and make a difference but there are only a handfull of those who can make a difference at 18 years of age. I vote for True freshman because I think the education and the hockey should meld into one. So few go anywhere special even after Div I and Div III hockey unless you think 400 per week is special playing CHL hockey. The difference between CHL and AHL is huge and then NHL is even greater. There is a reason why NHL’s make the bucks it requires a talent and desire far greater than 99% of high level players have. By the time they hit HS most parents know that there little Gretzky is done @ Senior year.

  135. Biff

The post that said that certain players have either not made it or have a tough road to go should not have included Salt. He went to Michigan because it is a good school and that is where he wanted to go for his education. He obviously wasn’t thinking about playing on their D1 varsity team. The fact that he is playing club hockey at a top school is a bonus . . . and impressive. He doesn’t have a long road to go.

  136. Hi Hockey mom

Nice article about Rui. Best of luck to him in the future. No one knows better than you who cares what people especially the haters on this blog think.

  137. cell out

nice to see HG isn’t afraid to dial up for another story

  138. Realist

Its ok to dream. But the problem is that the parents are spoon feeding these kids. Thats why when they try and go to the higher level, they fail. They are told since day 1 that they are the best and when they get to the real world they find out that they are average. Buy the time they get to the college level, club or other wise, they realize that’s not what they want. I tell my kid, what ever he wants to do he can do, if he chooses not to go further that’s his choice. And that’s not true, I have done alot in my life, and is very successful in what I do. I have played hockey at a higher level, and have seen crazy parents think their kids are as good as Gretsky. The kids start thinking they are then they crash when they get to the real world. Only stating what i have seen. To many parents try to get the kids to do things they could not. It causes alot of resentment.

  139. Biff

To “Parent”, I understand your point about alcohol on this forum. However, nobody was talking about getting drunk or underage drinking. Adults getting together for some food and drink, some friendship and some good discussion is not a horrible thing. As our kids go off to college, they will have choices to make. Binge drinking is a huge problem. Seeing adults consume alcohol in a controlled way could actually help them make good choices. I realize this is an emotional subject, but I didn’t like the black and white characterization that we are bad role models for our kids.

  140. Hockey Mom

Aaaaahhh now I understand Realist…..your son does not have that commitment, desire, or want of sacrifice for the game and you did. It is a lot of all three of those things. I can vouch for what I have seen my son give up for the love of the game! This hockey thing though, is all him…..no parent pushing here but crazy parent….welll that’s another story! A dirty, dirty, dirty one! lol lol

  141. YES!!

Dirty Hockey moms, drinking, this is my kind of blog!!!

  142. Hockey Fan

    Biff,

You’re absolutely correct in my opinion. Cody King is doing the same up at Boston College.

And to give you an idea, how competitive Club Hockey is, I spoke to Cody’s parents and they told me that he almost didn’t make the team. Now what does that tell you about the level of CLub Hockey these days?

P.S. COngrat’s to Salt and King for making two highly competitive CLub Hockey teams.

  143. Fleming

Imagine if his mother told him to stop playing with that moldy bread. These kids have a passion and love for the sport of hockey. The sacrifice and commitment they put in to play well to the high school level, will hopefully carry to other areas of their lives. Passion and dreams can certainly work together to create great things, and that is reality.

  144. not suprising..

professor and realist, you as long as many others on these stupid blogs have just proven that many people still love to make brainless assumptions about players, especially ones that you really have no idea whats going on. I know for a fact Rui actually requested a release because the applecore coaches were not doin their jobs. So get your facts straight and shut ur mouth!

  145. Al Bundy

Fleming…your moldy bread reference was so obscure that Dennis Miller would have pause to think. But I like it….

  146. It's not just league 1

    C’mon Harold….

When will you preview the other leagues????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  147. Biff

    correction…it is just league 1

  148. Biff

oh great. now we have a fake Biff as well. I did not write that it is just league 1. not my style. this identity theft on the blog is getting ridiculous

  149. just a thought

Hey maybe this is not a blog for Suffern parents and fans to talk to each other. Try instant messaging and leave everyone else out of your conversations because nobody else cares.

  150. Stat Cheque

    to: just a thought

so ignore it if it doesn’t pertain to you
i fail to see how it could bother you as long as you just skip those posts, it doesn’t seem to be too difficult a task and doing so would create the clarity you seek

  151. shs

agreed! Just as nobody else cares when bloggers beg for league 3 and 4 previews, just ignore it like the rest of us! ;-)

  152. straight from the burg

I have decided to go nameless from now on…no more postman or Mr. Hockey…

  153. ACHA

Some people wonedering why there is no freshman rule. The coaches of Michigan, BU, BC, and one or two others have been pushing for it for years. But….That is because that is where the Shatternicks of the world go. They don’t go to Ferris State, or Manakota. If they had a rule D. 1 hockey would only have 6 competetive teams.

I also found out this weekend that ACHA D. 2 and d. 3 have little rules, that is why Wagner can play 27 and 28 year olds. ACHA D. 1 and NCAA D. 3 and D. 1 state you only have 5 years to play 4. Also ACHA D. 1 counts as a year of eligibilty.

Finally Congrats to Mickey Carroll of Framingham, and Corey Conte of Lebabnon Valley for quickly asserted themselves as top 5 players for their team. Unfortunately neither player is receiving much help and both teams are at the bottom of D. 3 again.

  154. ECACST

Lebannon valley has gone through many coaches over the last years.. With Ted Russell now on board there is a good chance for improvement but today they are awful to watch.
Thats what recruiting badly for a few years produces and a program that was drafting locally instead of Western Canadian Juniors…
It would be a good test to send a few of our area’s best HS players to a d3 program to see if they can rise into the game by second and third year..My hope would be no Freshman could be older than 19 but its cadre of problems dealing with NCAA bylaw changes.

  155. icehole

    Couple of things—
1)The new flushing rink is not complete (locker rooms and seating)The ice is superb but rink will only have 400 seats. Disappointing for a big championship venue.CHSHL
2)There are a couple refs who do both CHSHL and Boces.(for refs 55)
3)new rule for goalies is flapper throat guard as well as neck guard are required for boces games.
    4) lastly, can the JN or Harold check into limiting screen names to just one person? If it is taken then find a different one.

Welcome Back All—See you Friday in Rye for Iona/Fordham
Remember to stand for the National Anthem and remove your hats.

  156. correction

none of the refs doing catholic games do public games except those across the river. The catholic has its own group. the public schools on each side of the have their own group. Problem with the catholic league is that its the same five guys doing all the games.

  157. icehole

wrong. I know of at least 3. 100% sure

  158. icehole

    rockland side

  159. title

mamaroneck beat glen rock (nj) tonight 7-3. wow mamaroneck is looking good and glen rock was not bad at all.

  160. title

plus.. mamaroneck has three lines full of goal scorers who all contributed for goals tonight

  161. correction

    right rockland side not westchester
the catholic league needs to have more than the same five guys though

  162. Rams

Rams 6 Iona 5 poor goalies had their hands full. The Iona goalie basically had trouble on every shot on net. Hard to watch the poor kid in net. Hopefully Iona has a goalie coach work with the kid.

  163. all or nothing

    ACHA
For you info Wagner does not have 27 or 28 yr olds, they due have 1 26 yr old that is a graduate student, the other older player has left the team, but this is what happens when you play 3 yrs of JRS and start college at 21 or 22.
