High (School) sticking

Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley with Harold Gutmann

Dec. 16, 2006

November
26

That was the last time Suffern lost a regular-season game. You’d have to go back to the season before that to find the last time Suffern lost a regular-season game at Sport-O-Rama. But but those streaks are in jeopardy Saturday night against Pelham and coach Ed Witz, who needs just one win to record No. 300 in his career.

The Suffern-Pelham is just one of a handful of incredible games coming up over the next few days. Tonight there’s Fordham Prep-Rye at Playland, a matchup that hasn’t taken place in a generation. Friday is the traditional Fordham Prep-Iona Prep game at Playland, always one of the most spirited games (and crowds) of the season and a good early barometer of where those teams will stand in the CHSHL. Mamaroneck also begins its title defense at home against John Jay, and the White Plains tournament begins, featuring three League 1 teams, CHSHL runner-up Stepinac and Section 9 champion Monroe-Woodbury and Clarkstown North, perhaps the most intriguing team heading into this season (I’ve seen predictions ranging from sectional finalists to third place in League 2). And on Sunday, Fordham Prep finishes a wild five days with a game at Madison Square Garden against Farrell.

I have bad news, good news and either good or bad news, depending on your views. The bad news is that hockey preview is going to be held until Dec. 1, after the football state championships are completed. The good news is that most of the information has already been posted on this blog (not the features, obviously). The mixed news is that I will be in Washington D.C. this weekend for Thanksgiving, my 10th high school reunion, a Turkey Bowl title and a ticket to the Giants-Redskins game.

Fortunately, an all-star group of reporters will be around the rinks this weekend to cover Iona Prep-Fordham Prep, Pelham-Suffern and the White Plains tournament championship, and you can read their reports on LoHud.com (I won’t ask you to do something crazy like pay for a newspaper, but of course it will be there as well).

I will do my best to check in from a dial-up AOL account. In the meantime, let’s give thanks for some great hockey this weekend.

  1. big weekend

Fordham Iona should be a barn burner but edge to Iona. Pelham is still Pelham, a solid defensive smart team but they are a division II school. Suffern is still Suffern, the best division I team in the area and state up until one sectional final loss late last season. It should be a good one but the edge has to go to Suffern. We will see

  2. postman

Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy the games everyone.

  3. Biff

    ditto postman…..see you at Sutters

  4. fanotgame

good to see the real guys back.

  5. Thanks Harold

have a happy thanksgiving yourself harold! quick question – would you be able to tell us now what the four feature stories will be for Monday’s hockey preview in the paper?

  6. suffern

NOT THE REAL GUYS, those names will never be used again by the real guys…

  7. suffern

    correction…they are the real guys

  8. Rye/Fordham tonight

Fanotgame can you gives us your scouting report about this game. Any thoughts on if coaches are playing to win. Any players missing or injured on either side.

    Key players to watch?

  9. mimi

tonight we’ll find out what kind of roster chaminade is playing with (junior/aaa players…or a bunch of nobodies)

farrell-chaminade 7pm at the new flushing rink, we’ll be able to tell just by the score…

  11. New Name

Has Harold actually banned any posts from the coward who steals names because he has no identity of his own? I just tried to post under the name I formerly used and it got kicked out. Hopefully, we can have a system where once you get a screen name, it is taken and nobody else can use it. I guess the coward will have to find new names to steal. I would be fine with identifying exactly who I am, but not if someone else can post under my name and pretend to be speaking for me.

  12. New Name

and i did not predict Pelham to beat Suffern as the name stealer did on another blog. I guess since I am a Suffern Dad and basically announced who I was last year, the coward thought it would be funny to pretend to be me and predict that my son’s team would lose. You better be a dumb kid. if you are a parent, then calling you a pathetic, cowardly loser is an understatement.

  14. New Name

I just wish the Suffern parents of the top players didn’t act like they are above everyone else.

  15. wow

  17. Soft

    Suffern is soft

  18. not the real guys

YOU GUYS NEED TO GET A LIFE. ALL OF YOU ESPECIALLY FANOTGAME. He’ll be posting all night tonight, rye is playing! Geez!

  19. NSTIGERFAN

Harold when will League 3 and League 4 info previews be in your blog.
There are some good teams in both of these leagues and so far we have gotten very little mention

  20. Taylor

Use your name to post you coward. My line has Rye a 2.5 goal favorite. (Betting is illegal, this is just for fun).

  21. Rye

    Rye 5-2 over Fordham tonight

  22. Impressed

    Hey Rye,

I’m impressed. Really didn’t think Rye had any scorers with Eck and Rodgers gone.

Who scored for Rye and does anyone know who was in the net for Fordham?

  23. My Hockey Team

    Impressed

    game is still going on. 1 – 0 Rye after 1st period. Shots 10 – 7 Rye

  24. My Hockey Team

3 – 0, RYE wins. Iona will beat Fordham by at least 5

  25. mimi

looks like chaminade is the same crapola as last year

    final
    farrell 7, chaminade 2

friday night, you’ve got iona-fordham at 5:15 in rye, then a good one in mt. vernon comprised of 2 non-locals…farrell-st. anthony’s at 9:15

  26. fanotgame

not the real guys- I will limit myself to one post tonite. Rye/Fordham a very even game as I would have expected. Rams very physical and Garnets very focused on the defensive system and playing disciplined hockey. Shots about the same. Rye had more scoring chances and finished on a few. Benincasa in goal was very sharp for the shutout. Goal scorers in order were Fullenweider, Mundinger, Rosenfeld.

  27. Raider rooter

Tough night for Scarsdale tonight vs. Pelham. It was about 8-2 Pelham. Pelham has a strong team in all areas and the goalies were solid. Scarsdale had problems getting it out of the zone most of the night. Scarsdale did score a nice Powerplay goal late in the scrimmage. Pelham played at least five lines and the top line was off the charts

  28. section1blogger

    to raider rooter
did pelham have alot of depth past their first line?

  29. ACHA

To the joy of some and the agony of others, this will be my last time defending the credibility of the ACHA. They don’t need me anymore, they’ve got the NHL

  30. My Hockey Team

    ACHA,

thank you for sharing the link

  31. Raider Fan

    To Section1Blogger

Pelham’s first and second line looked very good (all nite). There 3,4,5 lines lack some size, but are good skaters with good skill (my guess they are mostly freshman and sophomores). There top defensive pair (6 and 13) looked very strong. Especially 13. Great puck movement, and solid positional play.

The game was played in two 25 min halves. First half Gluck played in goal and Scarsdale played only 7 skaters (Harold is right in his analysis, depth will be a problem initially until some of the freshman develop). Those seven were able to match up reasonably well with Pelhams lines 2 thru 5, but struggled with the top line (21’s line on pelham). It was scoreless for first 7 minutes or so, then Scarsdale started to wear down, and Pelhams depth and skill took over. Pelhams first goal was shorthanded, the other two even strength. Second half it was 5-2 Pelham. Second half Scarsdale rotated all of its lines, and scored twice on powerplay. Gluck did not play in second half. When Scarsdale did generate chances to score, Pelham’s goalie made some key saves. Their goaltending looked much better tonite than it did in the fall league.

Raider Rooter’s synopsis is correct. Problem was Scarsdale forwards getting puck out of zone. Too many times it went to forward on side boards, but could not get past Pelham forecheck and D. Should be a great game Saturday nite vs Suffern.

  32. RF

    To section1blogger

Yes. Pelhams top 2 lines looked very good. Lines 3 thru 5 are solid skaters with good skill, but lacked size.

Game was played in two 25 minute halves. Scores was 3-0, 5-2. Scarsdale played 7 skaters in first half, and was able to skate with Pelham for the first 10 minutes or so. Pelhams first line (#21) was able to control the play (right from the start), and its second line and third line probably played even (slight Pelham advantage). Pelham first goal was shorthanded about 7 minutes in or so. Scarsdale did have chances to score, but Pelhams goalies were solid (much improved over spring/fall play). Pelhams defense, especially 6 and 13 can really move the puck, skate well and see the ice. Second defensive pair also solid.

Biggest problem for Scarsdale was getting puck out of zone (agree with Raider Rooter). Too many times forwards got it close to blueline, only to be turned back by Pelham forecheck and defense.

It should be interesting Saturday nite.

  33. Scarsdale

    RF

You have a real good team but last night was not a true test. Very young Raider team, with 2 frosh and 1 soph in top seven. And only a three real travel skaters in mix. They will need dynamite goalie play to stay in many games. Your guys will be tough for most teams. Good luck.

  34. fordham-rye

Both teams looked good and played well. Rye got the better in scoring chances though and Fordham came very close late in the game. Fordhams first and second lines looked pretty dangerous and Rye was more balanced on Offense. On D both team looked strong, but Rye may have only been running three defensemen for about half the game i think 3 of their top five were hurt. A major difference was the goalies, Ryes goalie looked very strong turning away all 18 shots he saw

  35. raiders and pelicans

I was at the Ice Hutch rooting on my Raiders and heres the way I saw it go. The Raiders are the same old Raiders who rely on seven or eight players. Pelham and I have seen them a thousand times, does not do it that way. It seems Pelham forces new players into the flow and then those kids are usable players. Pelhams first line was really good complete control and they evidently moved the really good D man they had last year number 2 to forward and he was incredible with 21 and 7. That line is terrific. The other lines were pretty good as well. I spoke to a few Pelham people and they played 5 freshman on regular shifts so they have young players too. Yes the Pelham D had two real good ones 6 and 13 and four others that were good too so thats why they probably moved up #2 to forward. The goaltending was much better. As far as my Raiders are concerned we need to have two or three lines to play and more options. Even if it means losing a few games early on to get other kids ready to play and be able to expand the play list to more than 10. The goaltending didnt look good but that had more to do with Pelham pounding our zone not letting Scarsdale out and getting lots of pressure. Scarsdale lost a lot of pucks to Pelham in the zone alot last night. It will be interesting but I hope Scarsdale can open up the play list so we can have more than one line to rely on.
    Happy Thanksgiving to all

  36. RF

    To Raiders and Pelicans

Happy Thanksgiving to you. Your analysis is correct, hard to see how Scarsdale can compete over an entire season with using only 7 skaters. My question is why? Why in preseason limit yourself to seven skaters…why not develop the younger kids and get them experience. Not like the scores count at this point.

  37. raiders and pelicans

Never know how each coach or team sees themselves. Maybe winning a scrimmage brings confidence and beating one of the big section 1 programs in a scrimmage is important? Problem is that if you go for it and dont get the W it backfires. Scarsdale has always played with single digit players and you have to deal with the consequences that follow. Watching Pelham last night they have 1 travel player that I know of so all those players are developed on the high school team. Thats home grown talent that is essential to stay on top year after year. Sometimes you need to lose games to develop players and we will see how things go. Scarsdale has been reasonably successful although they have not been past the first round of the playoffs in a while. I hope these young kids develop and being in league 2 that should ease the burden to

  38. here it is

so saturday night 21 faces off against 21?

  39. Scarsdale

    raiders and pelicans

Saying one travel player is a little misleading. I don’t know team that well, but maybe you have one travel playre this year. Most of the top players have played travel at top teams in Westchester or LI for many years, so they were good players before Witz got them.

  40. hshockeyfan

Duffy, Dzenis, Flory all play(ed) travel.

  41. Raiders and PWlicans

Way off base Scarsdale. Way off. You write in your post above that “you have one travel player this year” I dont have anything. I am a Scarsdale fan certainly not a Pelham fan. Having seen both teams a trillion times and talking to parents I know players on both teams. I never said the Pelham kids were not good before high school. I said that Pelham plays kids and somehow gets the lower level players to be competitive in league 1 and they dont have to play 7 or 8 skaters. Regarding this years Pelham team from what I know 21 7 have not played travel since peewees, the #2 kid I dont think played travel at all. The 2 D did and I think they still may, and Pelham has one more forward who I think might still do travel. Thats not the point the point is Pelham never tries to play 7 kids and they have been able to develop non travel kids that can compete and win games consistently. Matters not who gets the credit, I could care less. Look at the history Pelham is always good there has to be lots of reasons why.

  42. 3 ? big deal

So its 3 travel kids? Big deal, some team have ten and cant do squat

  43. Flory?

Wrong. He dabbled with Mariners slightly last year. Its Harms.

  44. Scarsdale

    3? big deal

I am not picking on your team. I am impressed with what you do each year. Didn’t Emerson play with Vipers? Is so, that gives him, harms, flory, dzenis and duffy. That’s a pretty good nucleus of players with true travel experience. Most of Scarsdale kids have only played in their program (which has usually not been that good).

  45. So I'm crazy

Travel hockey does not matter for High School Hockey. You cant rank a team by the number of travel players. Also, lets give credit where credit is due. The Pelham team isnt a success every year because of travel players… they are a success because the kids buy into the program due to great coaching by Ed Witz. End of story. I will argue that if the travel teams didnt take up so much ice, that the high school teams could practice 5 days a week like other HS teams and then you would see real development.

Pelham is very deep this year
    Rye is back
    WP should be excellent
    Suffern and Mamk always stellar.
Are we predicting another last place finnish for RTH?
    Mahopak looks good
I havent heard anything about John Jay

  46. Yup

The team that I hear this year is a real turn around power house is Byram Hills. Seems like they are playing good hockey and are far better than last year. What’s different? Players? Coach? System?

  47. another last place finish?

rth is always predicted to come in last but never does…

  48. the point

Emerson? I think he went as far as first year bantams. Not sure though. If you want to count ancient history than you can say Pelham has those. Look around the league especially the teams from upcounty and those teams are all travel kids and the same four or five teams end up in the finals each season. So lets not over rate the impact of travel players if you are developing your own players from within. Pelham Rye Mamaroneck Suffern all play league 1. The outside games they play may be tougher than league 1 games. You cannot think that travel players will save the day. You need to get something out of every player on the roster. Some teams do and they win, others do not, and well, that that

  49. league 1

Who’s is this connor strozza from rth is he actually going to be a big loss for them

  50. turkey tournament

Favorites for the WP tournament? I think the championship will be White Plains vs. Monroe

  51. turkey tourny

i say its CN vs RTH with CN winning because of missing player

  52. hockeytime

    who’s connor strozza?

  53. RTH

Connor strozza is a junior form harrison that played d for two years and got moved to foward he is out because of school and is a major loss to the team

  54. sec1 fan

Harms plays travel for Express. Duffy plays for Colonials (shuman and willows on the same team) and he played for Suffolk PAL earlier. Dzenis played Applecore Junior B Empire until a little bit before practices started. Flory played some Mariners last year, and did the travel circuit until 10th grade. All of the other kids played Pelham travel hockey until high school, with the exception of a few who played for Express/Bulldogs and other teams in middle school.

  55. throw down

    whos a better pair ?
    Pelhams 21 – and 7

    or
    Sufferns 21 and 15

  56. two players

Its a team game boys and girls. Matters little which teams top players are better.

  57. WP Tournament

any updates from the WP tournament games today would be greatly appreciated!

  58. Yup

RTH loses 4-0 to WP in the tourney. A very different team than we have ever seen from RTH. It maybe early in the season with lots of new players. They didnt look as hungry or aggressive as years past. They also figure out ways to win. Hope they bounce back.

  59. Cant wait

    Suffern 6 Pelham 3

  60. fiya

rth will bounce back…expect a completely different intensity level from them tomorrow.

  61. Surprise

Pelham will beat Suffern. Pelhams first line is stronger than Suffern’s.

  62. Predictions

Tonight Mamk 8 Jay 1 (give or take one on each side)

  63. prediction

    Suffern 4 pelham 2

  64. WP WINS AGAINST RTH AGAIN

Let’s give dues where due. WP once again beat RTH and has now beaten them today, all last year, and the year before….GO WHITE PLAINS!

  65. fruitflies

Expect a different outlook from RTH after that tough loss. They’ll be a different team after tomorrow. Looked like they were just getting the kinks worked out.

  66. Predictions

    For Iona/Fordam tonite.

  67. iona vs fordam

    4-3 fordam in ot

  68. Suffern Dad

Journal News says CN vBrewster at 7pm at sporto tonight but they are in the WP tournament. JN is off a week. They listed it in yesterday’s paper and todays. If you want to see CN play (and I do), you’ll have to go to WP (I think they play at 1pm). Don’t feel like making that trip though.

  69. Yup

Journal News is wrong I believe. CN does no play Brewster at Sport-O tonight. That game was originally scheduled, until CN jumped into the WP Tournament, so it looks like that game was cancelled and re-scheduled for later in the season. I believe you are correct in that CN plays at 1pm today against MW

  70. Rams vs. Gaels

Who are the starting goalies for both teams tonight?

What players to watch for both teams?

  71. CHSHL Fan

    iona vs fordam,

There is NO OT in the CHSHL!

  72. Gael force Storm

There is weather advisory tonight for all Rams.

  73. Sal

    Any update on Mahopac/Somers NS?

  74. Somers1

    Marasco 6, Mahopac 2

  75. Yup

Give credit to White Plains..Agreed!!!. We seem to have had RTH’s number for the last two years.

  76. RTH Rebuild

Looks like they better add another school to this team with some players. Nobody is replacing Novick, Keegan and the McKinneys on this years squad. Urban is all alone this year.

  77. In the stands

C-North 6-1 after 2 periods, Willows 3 goals, Schuman 3 goals, McAdo playing defense by himself

  78. Maybe

Even with the schools combined the total number of kids is still small. Rye Neck only has two kids on the team. Urban is alone but looked a bit off as did the rest of the team. I think this was their first game at all this year. They always seem to figure something out and a way to win when we all say they cant.

  79. Suffern Dad

North is playing MW? and btw, it’s Mcindoe not McAdo

  80. northhh

North won 9-2, willows 6 goals, shuman 3

  81. To sec1fan

North won 9-2, willows 6 goals, 2 assist, shuman 3 goals, 4 asists

  82. tiger fan

I saw that kid Connor Strozza walking around at the game he dosent look that big very thin idk hw he is as a player

  83. Last Year

Did CN score 9 goals all last year?

  84. Last Year

The string is confusing. Did North play RTH or MW?

  85. CN

geez, will anyone be able to stop willows this year? he may be able to score at will

  86. observant pessimist

    RTH Rebuild,

How would you like RTH to rebuild? Lose intentionally in order to get a high draft pick? RTH should simply be playing in league 2 where they belong, but the coaches refuse to see that losing Novick and Keegan cripples their team.

In regards to Urban being alone out there, I didn’t even notice him on the ice at all today. Perhaps that proves how much Novick did for RTH, and how he did nearly everything alone. If Urban isn’t scoring constantly (can he do it without Novick?), RTH will be in trouble this year.

  87. Shoot out

CN played MW. Watching Willows and Shuman play was ridiculous. They each no exactly where the other one is. I also thought CN is deeper than most give them credit for. Mcindoe played great in net, although he really didn’t have many shots. CN does not belong in league 2. Can they still move up to league 1?

  88. Scoring Champs

SCoring Champ will definitely come from League 2 or 3.

Pecse had 7 points first game
    Willow had 6 or 7
    Morasco had 4-5

Scoring leader this year will have over 130 points +

It’s going to be a JOKE! Because TOP Players are playing in Leagues 2,3,4!

  89. Blogger fka Biff

Playing in League 2, Willows and Shuman may break every NYS single season scoring record. New tv series “2 guys and a goalie”. I need to see myself if they are deeper than two guys and a goalie, but they might not need to be.

  90. Correction

    CN’s Points
Willows had a total of 8 points
Shuman had a total of 7

  91. Suffern Dad

Playing in League 2, Willows and Shuman are going to break NYS single season scoring records. They may have done it in league 1, but in League 2 . . . New tv series. “Two guys and a goalie”. I’ll have to see for myself if they are truly deeper than that, but they may not need to be.

  92. Agree

Suffern Dad, I agree with you on all counts! Those two are going to break records this year.

  93. north

What were North’s lines? Any depth?

  94. scores from WP

    Any Step Brewster score?

  95. Old School Mountie

Being the top scorer in League 2 is like being the tallest midget…

  96. fiya

3-2 iona after 1st…the defense looks very weak on both sides

  97. fiya

    3-2 iona after 1st

  98. fiya

    4-2 iona 12 minutes left in 2nd

  99. WP stacks

Every year, White Plains conveniently stacks the tournament so they are facing the weakest competition in the first round and they put the “supposed” top two teams against each other in a different bracket. This year they faced RTH (the weakest of the 8 teams) in the first round and MW played CN in a different bracket. Little did they realize, MW, who they tied, isn’t as strong as some of the other surprises.

Now they have to play Stepinac. A team with talented players, just not enough of them. A team they’d have beated easily in the past. If they could beat them, and they can’t this year, they’d be in the finals. White Plains will still lose to Stepinac and then they will play for third place. White Plains will lose to Somers. The truth about how the teams are rated (and yes, I saw them all…)

    1 CN
    2 Somers
    3 Stepinac
    4 MW
    5 Brewster
    6 Mahopac
    7 WP
    8 Rth

CN is really a cut above…None of their games will be close.Teams 2-6 are pretty close. MW, Mahopac and Brewster are just about even. And WP and RTH are a little weaker.

  100. Al Bundy

No one is really concerned about scoring titles. That title is usually minimal help with all county or section selections, see WP kids from last year. I don’t think the CN kids are concerned with scoring titles. They’ll score alot because they are good. I’m sure the goal is to make a run at the league and than the section championship. But they’re still deserved underdogs to Suffern and Mamaroneck. Very tough to do it with only a few kids. It is a long season.

  101. WP Tourney Update

    WP 4 over Ryetown 0
    Stepinac 6 over Brewster 4
    Somers/N.Salem 6 over Mahopac 2
    Clarkstown North 9 over Monroe/Woodbury 2

    Saturday’s matchup:
    Mahopac vs Monroe/Woodbury
    Ryetown vs Brewster
    WP vs Stepinac
    Somers/N.Salem vs Clarkstown North

    Let the predictions begin!

  102. Game Times

whats times are the games on Saturday?

  103. Righty

Hey Old School I bet Willows and Shuman will have more points then anyone in league 1. Very petty comment you made. Just hope your “Suffern” doesn’t have to play them…..

  104. wow

Saw Marasco’s performance and it was great but I mean Willows had 6 goals and 2 assists wow. I can’t wait to see these two battle it out tomorrow however CN will breeze after the first half of the game just because McInde is a way better goalie then the S/NS goalie and as for the WP/Stepinac game who cares the winner of the CN-S/NS game will win it easy. Wow if Willows plays like this the whole season CN will destroy Suffern and if he had 8 points against a decent Monroe Woodbury what will he do against the weaker L2 teams?

  105. why

Why didn’t Willows or even Shuman try out for the ESG if we had Shuman we would have done better and if we had Willows we probaly wouuld have won it.

  106. WP Tourney Times

    8:00 am – Mahopac vs Monroe/Woodbury
3:30 pm – Ryetown vs Brewster
5:30 pm – WP vs Stepinac
    7:30 pm – Somers/N.Salem vs Clarkstown North

  107. mimi

iona will be 500 or barely over 500 this year

a shooter tutor is 3x better than kaiser…gizzo, the soph. backup, is not much better either…

its a shame for such a strong program…what are you gonna do, happens every so often that you don’t have a goalie…happened to me in 2000, too…

every iona game will be lighting up the scoreboard on both ends…7-6, 10-8, etc….unless they make a conscious effort to go down on every shot (will make you twice as tired) or just do whatever it takes, including icing the puck, to get out of their own zone, it’ll be hard for them to win, even against mediocre programs, i.e. a 1 goal loss to fordham tonight…

only so much cambria, molinaro, lopez, etc. can do…

  108. mimi

    kaiser’s sv% tonight must’ve been like .221 lol

  109. hockey man

yeah. it looked like Iona dominated the play. I think fordham had 16 shots

  110. interesting posts

thought I`d jump in. The teams in league 2 are in league 2 because their AD and school want them there. So there is no conspiracy. Ionas goalies? Mimi get over it. Tell your kids to play better defense. Many quality teams had below average goalies and you need to make adjustments and work around it. At least Iona can recruit unlike public schools who get only what available in the district. They must have know it was a problem going into this season and they at least can recruit a kid.
White Plains stacking? You surprised by that? I`m not, they are a large D one program with a rink youth hockey and lots of players and they hid out in the lower leagues for years.
Stepinac will bury them mark it down

  111. title

    mamaroneck over john jay 7-1

goals by fine, jackson, glaser, scott hagan, and matt conner had a hat trick.

  112. Mamo

Final Mamk 7 John Jay 1. A laugher.

  113. Mamo

Mamo played 4 lines of O and 3of D. Sophs got lots of time. They make it look like a scrimmage.

  114. Mamo

Mamk kids were hardly skating. And hitting anybody on JJ that made a move really hard.

  115. scores

    What was the Fordham-IP score?

  116. Mamo

Prediction is it will quickly be clear that CNorth is top 3 with Mamo & Suffern and that they’re all even and in no particular order right now.

  117. mimi

    interesting points,

agreed. but as hockey man stated, fordham = 16 shots. no excuse (on the goalie) for 6 of those to go in…

  118. Benjamin Franklin

Fordham-Iona was a WILD game, with a large and loud crowd. Iona kept taking the lead and Fordham kept tying the score. Fordham grabbed a late lead (about 2:20 left) and won 6-5. Very entertaining.

  119. mimi

    fordham 6, iona 5

the cambria-molinaro-lopez line scored literally 10 seconds into the game…

    believe iona blew 2 2-goal leads…

  120. Suffern Dad

I agree that kids can’t help which league they are in. Willows already proved two years ago that he could score 100 plus points in League 1. Not his fault that he plays in League 2. and I am sure that both he and Shuman would much prefer to win the section and then move on rather than win individual scoring titles. should be an interesting season.

  121. Benjamin Franklin

Iona only had one 2 goal lead (when it was 4-2). This is nitpicking but the first goal was scored sixteen seconds into the first. :)

  122. mounain lions

If Willows and Shuman stayed and did not leave North two years ago, North would have never moved down, So indirectly they are kind of responsible for what league they play in this year

  123. Fordham

Congrats to Fordham if in fact they knocked off Iona. I watched the Rams agianst two public school small schools teams Pelham and Rye and I dont think they scored more than 2 goals in total in the two scrimmages, so to explode against Iona is pretty good

  124. sec1 fan

    Pelham wins 4-2

  125. CHSHL 08-09

The Policastro-Spillane-Murphy line finally stepped up for Fordham tonight after having a whopping 2 goals in the preseason. Against Iona they had 4 with Murphy having a hat trick and Policastro adding another. The other goal scorers for Fordham were Nicosia and Brown. It was a very excited game to watch with a great crowd.

  126. hshockeyfan

Actually, Mamo played two lines most of the game when it mattered. JJ played 3 lines O and two on D. Mamo clearly the better (deeper)n team but the first 3 goals were deflections. Score was only 2-0 after 1 and both goals were scored in the last two mins of the period.

Mamo is a deep and well rounded team but the only individual player who stood out was #87. The goalie played well too.

Personally, I expected more from Mamo.

  127. fanotgame

Saw Iona/Fordham last nite. Agree with interesting points. Iona has the horses to make it work. Turn in “run and gun” for a little more “stay at home D and forward backcheck”. Pelham has done just fine protecting their young goalies the last few seasons. Rye finds ways to win with just a few goals per game. The Gaels can do the same. Their forwards will need to sacrifice some stats to do it, though. This may need to be the model for all the local CHSHL teams who seem to all have very young or inexperienced goaltending. Unless there is a switch to a more defensive focus, I expect a lot of 8-6 games in the CHSHL this season.

  128. wp tourney

rth will bounce back remember this post

  129. Mamo

Sorry if anyone expects more than a 7-1 win in game 1.

  130. WP FAN ALWAYS

Enough with the WP team hangs out in League 2….they did not win the league for something like 20 or more years and according to the way leagues are assigned…did not make the League 1 slot! BUT they were soooo good last year it burns you bloggers…Everyone says how good RTH is so why would they choose them to play first and in the 7:00 am slot if they were “stacking” the tourney? RTH should have never been in League 1 last year and WP should have but it didn’t work out like that. Not the players fault…WP came in third that year and was not afforded a chance to be moved up to League 1 but they finally won the league and were moved up. Exactly the way the allignments are supppose to work. How RTH got there is just plain not right…they did not belong there last year and it is questionable if they belong there this year! WP lost in the semifinals to Mamo last year 4-3 because the refs put their best player in the box twice on bogus calls and then they held up a defenseman behind the net on the powerplay and scored. They were lucky to get by WP. Get over it!

  131. some teams have all the luck

WP was lucky to make the scoresheet when they lost 6-1 at sporto

  132. to WP Fan always

Not a good thing to say things here when you havent a clue as to what you are talking about. First of all, this proceedure of if you finish first in the league you move up a league and if you finish last in the league you move down a league JUST CAME INTO PLAY this past season. Before this year it was up to the school. WP was asked and begged because they were a large school with a JV no less to come into league 1 and they refused every year. This year they had to because the new rule came into effect and they did finally finish first in league 2. Nice try though. Regarding RTH at least they were not afraid or looking to hid out and they stepped up into league 1 even though WP has a much better situation.
WP is an underachieving program for a school that size with youth hockey and a rink and tradition they have not done a thing in the last ten years. What one playoff win?

  133. Iona will get it

Agree with Fanotgame. Was there to watch and it was not pretty. Correct Rye keeps the score down and Pelham before this year had weak goalies and adjusted and never missed a beat. They keep opportunities to a minimum and Iona has the talent to do the same. They`ll figure it out

  134. sec1 fan

    forwards need to backcheck

  135. Got to scratch your head at some of the comments

I will comment on two elements concerning RTH.

First to the WP FAN ALWAYS. How can you say that RTH didnt belong in League 1 last year. They had a fourth place finnish overall and played Pelham to one a goal and overtime loss. They didnt hide in League 2 nor did they do anything tricky to be in League 1. WP DID NOT want to be in League 1. They were asked. RTH met the challenge and they played well. Why should they go down a league this year rather than meeting the challenge again. I dont think a 7am game in the morning after thanksgiving that was their first game (how many games and scrimmages has WP had?) is an indicator of their success or lack there of. Why not give the credit to the program for having the belief that they can play well and learn.

To the comment from Observant Pessimist

“RTH should simply be playing in league 2 where they belong, but the coaches refuse to see that losing Novick and Keegan cripples their team.” WHY? If they did that and they did well wouldnt they be the “sandbaggers” WP was accused of?. The coaches refuse to see that losing last years class cripples them? Losing any senior class is tough on a team. Every year the RTH program is picked dead last in their respective league and every year they finish in the top two (last year was the exception moving into League 1). The coaches are pretty experienced guys with some rather high level and pro experience. I am sure they will get another great team out of the group they have now and if not, they will put a team on the ice that challenges other teams every night.

I would doubt that the RTH you saw in the first game is what you see the remained of the season.

ACTUALLY Mamo played three lines consistently throughout the whole game and didnt incorporate their 4th line into the swing of things until they had a 6 goal lead in the 3rd Period. Do not try take take away Mamos credit by saying their first two goals were tip ins, i will be surprised if you are a hockey fan and have never known a team that does tip in drills, shots from the point while forwards battle for tip ins, thats not luck its skill developed in practice. Thank you for recognizing mamo is the deeper team. Also thank you for pointing out that jackson and glaser had great games HOWEVER when a team wins 7-1 and you say that you expected more, what exactly are you talking about, do u want Mamk to run up the score into the double digits next time?? Next time give them the credit they deserve but dont say things like you expected more when they won by 6. thank you

Does anyone have a report on the TZ/Nyack vs. Lakeland game late last night?? Just curious to see how they did.

  138. Updates?

Anyone know the results of this mornings the Mahopac vs Monroe/Woodbury game in the WP Tournament?

  140. early league 4

early league 4 scouting…mostly gleamed from knowledge of last year and games played this year at BIA.

Sleepy Hollow Irvington should win league. Most talent and very good coach.

Kennedy/Putnam Valley good defense and goaltending is strong.

    Those are 2 strongest teams.

After that some drop off occurs.

Pearl River, decent depth, need underclassmen to step up, biggest threat to the top 2.

Lakeland Panas, not bad, could push Pearl River.

Carmel, good coach, good goalie, they have one or two good goal scorers.

Horace Greely, Their very good goalie will win them some games. Some big bodies

TZ/Nyack, Some talent, need to play more disciplined hockey.

  141. Mamo gamo

That’s pretty funny about WP almost beating Mamo last year in the sectionals. Argue all you want. I’m laughing. This isn’t last year anymore, it’s this year. And WP has no one and pretty much stinks.

  143. South

South jumped byram early in the game getting the first five goals. Byram was missing injured senior defensemen Neil Hinrichs and injured sophmore captain Eric Basmajian. You cannot say that if you have travel players you will be good because Byram has 10 players on their team play at least one season of travel

  144. sec1 fan

Travel doesnt matter. Pelham has 3 or 4 travel players and would EASILY beat every team in the section other than the good league 1 teams and north.

  145. league 4

You must define travel…..Some travel is great, other travel teams would lose to some good inhouse league teams.

  150. mimi

looks like the long island theory (connecticut rule) holds true…jr/aaa players must choose between club or high school…such a shame, considering the amount of hockey players that really go to the below 2 schools…

assuming chaminade’s jv is dominant again (they didn’t play a league game yet), their varsity looks weak again (lost to farrell 7-2)...just saw them now play against iona, bench is maybe 15/16 players…iona looked like they were running a clinic…

looks like st. anthony’s is in the same boat…varsity lost to stepinac and farrell, but jv just killed farrell 9-0

  151. you will know

there is a very easy way to tell who is winning the suffern pelham game. if there are constant updates every 5 minutes with suffern goals and assists then it is a pretty good bet that suffern is winning if not pelham is probably winning

  163. ip/chaminade

wouldnt say iona is done just yet. the season is stil young. they beat farrel, fordham was messy, and tonight was the direct result of playing an amazing goalie. iona needs to learn to finish and stop expecting cody king to score the important goal. as for the goalies, yes, friday kaiser was unimpressive. could be the result of the first varsity game with a huge crowd chanting against him. tonight, gizzo gave up 2, both of which were dead in front and not bad goals to give up. the sooner iona can come to realize that new big guns need to step up, the sooner they wll start to win. king, mccabe, and stefan are gone though most of the team is still there. the goal tending will work itself out and the offense will hopefully begin to realize that they are responsible for the big plays, not cody.

rth ran 3 lines for most of the game and they all seemed to be fairly strong, they had many scoring opportunities that they weren’t able to convert on

  173. sec1 fan

Suffern won 2-0. they had an empty netter with 3 seconds left. Sufferns first goal was on the PP and it was bouncing around up front and trickled across the line (arguable). Both goalies were outstanding. Gabriel is very good, his only issue is that there were a couple times that he went to the ground and would lose control of the puck and have no idea where it was as it sat right in front of him. The game was very chippy overall and it resulted in a mini fight with 2 left. Lambdin covered the puck and a suffern player came in hard and landed on him. Landis got in on the scrum. When lambdin got up he threw 3 titanic right hooks to the kids temple. Landis and the other kid sat in the box for the rest of the game. #15 and #21 on suffern were very very good. other than that I didnt see much, but those 2 are excellent. Mike Mamone (#2) played his first game at forward and played very well. His forecheck essentially killed off 2 Suffern power plays.

  174. North fan

Clarkstwon north beat Northern Salem 13 to 2!! Shuman and Willows both had 5 goals and 3 assists. CN was beating NS 9 to 0 after the first period!

  175. early league 4

Unbelievable CN! 2 kids make this much difference.

  176. North Alumni

Wow! it’s pretty unbelievable that those two boys are making such a major difference in that team! Way to go CN! Good job Matt and Jake! Keep it going CN, and make us proud!

  177. mountain lion

Great game tonight Suffern took care of business in a tight game. Goaltending looked strong as did all aspects of the game. Give credit to Pelham nice team that played three lines and 6 defense. Looks like several freshman playing nice balance.

  178. North

What are the lines for CN?

  179. wow

wow i was disappointed by pelham and sufferns play and i thought that they would both be much better. the only offensive player on suffern i thought was good was 21. 15 was not very good. Also, pelhams “great defense” did not impress me at all. so far it looks like mamaroneck will spank these teams.

  180. shame

RTH lost to Brewster. RTH will finnish last as predicted for once.

  181. My Hockey Team

    interesting posts,

nice call on the Step vs WP game

  182. to WOW

Well, Mounties will beat Mamaroneck no question. Pelham? well they are in the lower playoff division so they don`t have to worry about Mamaroneck. Well see when the Mounties get to Mamaroneck

  183. Suffern

game could have went either way glad Suffern came out on top. Pelhams D was real good especially since I found out they played 6 different kids back there. The Division 1 play offs are going to be nasty if North is as good as everyone says. Looking to a sick season

  184. OldSchool

So far the competition hasn’t been to tough for North. 13 to 2 against No Salem, not like playing L1 competition. They will put up some big numbers this year. Ashame they didn’t show up last season when the games were a lot tougher. MacIndoe stood on his head and the coach played the freshman against Suffern and Mamo. He had no choice. At least they didn’t loose 13 to 2 then. Ouch, that is painful.

  185. Suffern

I would not want to meet north in the semi final

  186. OldSchool

Hope Suffern will be there this year.

  187. observant pessimist

The problem with RTH is that it goes with 3 mediocre forward lines, rather than consolidating and making 2 good lines. This appraoch will keep RTH in a lot of games, but they will likely not win very many of them. Urban looked excellent tonight, likely a result of him finally starting to move his feet unlike in the first game against WP. Brancucci on that line is decent at scoring, which is not very difficult considering that he is playing with Urban. However, he is very slow in the defensive zone which is what lead to the Brewster’s overtime winner. Overall, the line is excellent offensively, but somewhat clueless in the defensive zone.

The second line of Walsh-Jacobsen-Giacomo plays decently in the defensive zone, but cannot get a single scoring chance going offensively. Walsh is an excellent forechecker, but his hands are very questionable. Jacobsen makes way too many passes, and isn’t even successful on many of them. It looks like he is scared to skate the puck, which is odd since he is a decent skater. In regards to the third line in tonight’s game, it will be a slight miracle if it ever scores again. You could carve sculptures from the hands of each kid on that line.

RTH’s defense is terrible; there is not a single defenseman on that team who can stop a good player on another team. Plus, the D can rarely even get the puck out of the zone.

Paul Nadasi should be the backup goalie on RTH, with Lauro being used as the starter (that is if he actually shows up).

RTH will have to out-think their opponents in league 1 this year, because it surely won’t beat them from superior-skill.

  188. suffern

sect1 fan, I don’t know what game you were watching but the game was not “chippy” at all. I guess you watch a lot of “mite” games. A couple of pushing and shoving moments in front of the net but nothing out of the ordinary. Maybe you watch too much girls hockey. Good game by both teams.

  189. Kidding?

    observant pessimist,

you certainly are an RTH parent and not a happy one. I take it that you are none to pleased with the team this year and to be honest, the way you put down the team is shameful. Some of the things that you say in your post and naming names of kids in such a manner is terrible. I am sure you wont have the decency to post your name.

RTH is building a team. The third line was not terrible it actually did a great job including getting the first goal of the game for RTH. The second line also had some great chances. The first line was put together in the middle of the game and the center (no need to name) moved to the position well.

Brancucci did do a nice job on offense and might have been one of the reasons that Urban played better. Urban doesnt do it on his own.

Its not the RTH team or style we have seen in the last few years, but my guess is that it will be soon. You wont replace the players that left but so what.

  190. northhh

Good luck to whatever league one team plays north in the regular season and playoffs. These two scores in the last two games prove how good willows and shuman really are. Can wait till the section playoffs. Suffern and mamaroneck, i hope your getting prepared now for them.

  191. Hey Suffern and Mamo

are you ready for the Willows and Shuman show???

  192. Disgrace

Not that we should be bashing kids but whoever saw the CN-SNS game would agree, this Shuman kid is a total show boater. I mean every time he scored weather it be 1-0 or 11-1 he was jumping up and down like he won the stanly cup however Willows would score and go to the bench like your supossed to, I just feel its a disgrace what he did. Also someone should tell Shuman he’s nothing without Willows,Willows set up every goal perfectly. When Willows left last year that is why Shuman didn’t play not because he wanted to focus on his travel career

  193. hocleyfan

CN may be a good team, but last night was not a true match with SNS. Marasco was removed from the game in the first 5 minutes after his response to being provoked by two CN players. Aruilio and Bassin were out with shoulder injuries. This blow out score does not tell the true story

  194. mountain lion

Suffern Pelham game was not chippy. Both teams played tough and the individual battles along the walls and corners was good stuff. Both teams will play better Suffern will be fine and will match up nicely with Mamaroneck. Pelham will do as they always have and be one of the top D 2 programs I like the playing of three lines and 6 d men in a game like that. Shows they are in it for the long term and are working toward sectional play as the goal.

  195. North

Is the older Shuman brother playing hockey anywhere? I heard that the older Willows brother is playing up at SUNY Canton. The older Shuman was just as talented. Wasn’t he also 1st team All State? Someone said he was playing club up at Syracuse. Good for him. What a great business school. And to be associated with their club team is really special. It is great to see these talented HS players move on to great schools and continue playing the game they love in one form or another.

  196. CHSHL Wise Open

After a couple of games it is anyones guess who will win.

    Iona: No goaltending
Stepinac: No depth with only 12 skaters
    Rams: Defense is suspect
    Chaminade: Surprised Iona last night
St. Anthonys: Not the power house everyone said
Farrell: 2-1 so far lost to Iona

  197. To Disgrace

I was at that game too and I agree with basically everything your saying I mean the kid is jumping 20 feet in the air when it’s 10-1 and yes without Willows he is not much

  198. Kidding

Are you kidding me? The first three goals Shuman scored I saw no jumping. Guess you dont know Shuman he is a very animated kid, very funny! And as far as he is nothing without Willows, look at the stats, Willows only assisted 2 of Shumans goals. But I guess when your jealous you see things a lot differently! Both Willows and Shuman are good players, and they don’t deserve to hear your jealous rants. Grow up and if your an adult, I feel sorry for you!

  199. WP

I think that everyone under-estimates Stepinac. Short bench but lots of talent. I think they will give North a run for their money tonight. Definitely will be closer than last nights games. North can score goals but their defense (other than McIndoe) is weak. One of their top defenseman got a broken jaw and a concussion from a hit from behind in the game against MW. I heard it was a real scary hit and he was carried off the ice.

  200. OldSchool

Both Willows and Shuman are very talented players. Lets leave it at that. They will both put up some huge numbers this season. Good for them.

  201. Disgrace

First of all Shuman almost fell over twice when he scored and I don’t care if he scores 20 goals but to celebrate like he did especially when it’s 9-1 in the first period and Willows did nothing wrong he scored and left it at that and to be fair on Willows assist they were perfect and he made the play on Shumans assist he would dish it to Willows and then Willows would do some great move also Willows left last year that is why Shuman didn’t play which shows me he needs Willows and please don’t say he wanted to focus on his travel career what he focuses for 1 year lets get real

  202. Get Real

Disgrace, you are a sad, pathetic person! Did you speak to Shuman and ask him why he didn’t play last year, or are you just assuming from what you have read on this blog? Worry about your kid and what your team needs to do, to win some games. your jealousy is showing….... not nice that you have nothing else to do with yourself then bash a 17 year old kid. enjoy your holidays!

  203. OldSchool

In looking at CN roster from the White Plains tournament, I noticed a lot of juniors and seniors that did not play last year. Maybe the strength of CN this year has more to do with them. You can give credit to the ones scoring the goals, but it seems to me that the other SIX kids playing this season had something to do with it. They weren’t on the ice by themselves. Lets be real. I am sure that both the seniors who scored the goals last night realize that. I am sure that they are both humble in the locker room. You can’t tell me that an influx of six upperclass players does not have an immediate impact on a team.

  204. cn fan

Mammo and suffern will battle for 1st for the right not to play CN in the semi’s. CN will be a wild card because they will not be playing a tough schedule this year due to last years record. During the season they will be scoring alot of goals which will hide their weakness defense. In order to beat either Mamo or Suffern they will need the defense to improve or like last year rely on their goaltender to make the impossible saves.
Lets remember McIndoe is the one who stuck it out last year and he will be the player Mammo and suffern will worry about come playoff time.

  205. CN

how many kids are on CN’s roster? and how are the other CN players looking besides Willows and Shuman?

  206. Al Bundy

McIndoe is still CN’s most important player, especially come playoff time.

Willows and Shuman will give Suffern and/or Mamo fits, but for one game they have the depth of players that can keep up with those 2.

  207. Roster CN

Except with the addition of Willows and Shuman the CN roster is much the same as last year, minus last year seniors and the addition of a couple of freshmen.

Last year provided experience by fire to the Soph’s and Freshmen. They are naturally stronger this year and while

  208. out of control

Any post with a young man’s name listed should be deleted and the poster should be expelled.
    just awful stuff.

  209. Out of control 2

I agree with you out of control. People blog on here as if this was the NHL. Is the Journal News doing local hockey a favor? It seems that parents blog the most and without much positive comments. Typical hockey parents for sure. I wonder if other sports parents are this ugly. The blog has been like this for years.

  210. tiger tourny

RtH lost once again to Pac looks like wiil be some changes with that awful team

  211. CN Fan

Marasco was removed from the game for pushing the ref, not for an altercation with CN players.

  212. Al Bundy

This blog has been fairly respectable. Hockey is a relatively small community and since many people no or have associated with each other i think that controls it somewhat. I see more “calling out” on the football blog.

The RTH naming seems like the work of a disgruntled parent, if so, it’s the first time RTH has been named like this.

  213. sec1 fan

There were like 5 roughing penalties…. How often does a goalie punch a kid in the face? Did you not see when 3 kids tried to attack Flory in the second? I mean it wasnt a blood bath but it was chippy.

  214. Suffern

    Sect1 fan,

it was a great game by two competitive teams refereeing was awful and I will agree Pelham got the short end of that but it was a hard fought game leave it at that and please move on

  215. Respect

I would agree. RTH has never had disgruntled parents or been called out like this in the past. They have also always won and looked like a cohesive team. I AM an RTH parent and have full faith that this team with these kids and these coaches will improve. These kids have always developed on this team and built character as well as skill. If any unhappy parent would like to discuss or have questions with some of the parents who have been in the program for the last few years why we value this team and these coaches so highly then I suggest they just ask. Otherwise, I would ask that they would be respectful of the players on the team. I think that goes for other players on other teams as well.

  216. Lines

    what were suffern’s lines?

  217. CN-SNS: More of the Story

    CN Fan –
You are partly correct – “Marasco was removed from the game” but the reason is not clear – perhaps it will be revealed once the video tape of the game is reviewed. What clearly was not addressed by the refs, however, was the CN player who launched from the ice and landed on top of several CN and SNS players already on the ice and in the net, nor the extra CN player who came off the bench and joined in the “altercation.” None of the CN players left the game or incurred a penalty, while SNS incurred a 4-minute major.

  218. The Cash Cab

The Marasco altercation was fairly lopsided against S/NS. Marasco came in from the wing, took a shot and followed up his rebound, running into McIndoe, who by the the way was outside the crease. Of course, some CN players rightfully gathered round to protect McIndoe, then one CN kid flew in and knocked over a few guys, including Marasco. Then as Marasco is being escorted to the box or off the ice (who knows when the ref decided to throw him out) I believe it was Shuman who gave Marasco a shove.

Marasco was just following up his play, should have gotten no goalie interference penalty since McIndoe was out of the crease, a CN player should have gotten one for flying into the altercation, and then Shuman for instigating. Marasco’s removal from the game was the ref’s discretion, but CN should have been represented in the box as well.

  219. To Cash Cab

Agreed however even though McIndoe was out of the crease Marasco still should have gotten a minor penalty while I beleve 18 on CN should have gotten a penalty for coming in late and hitting Marasco and McIndoe should have gotten a penalty for punching Marasco and Shuman should have gotten a penalty for shoving Marasco way after the play so it should have been 3 CN players in the box with only one SNS player in the box instead it was a 4 minute major for SNS and no penalties for CN

  220. The Cash Cab

exactly, you outlined the penalties much better

  221. suffern lines

    The Suffern lines were:

    Hill,Hiller,Jaeger

    Modica,Goetz,Baker

    Gatta,Murphy,Nicholson

  222. sec1 fan

I’m just saying it was a rough game. No bias. I said it earlier and people said I was used to watching girls Pee-wee hockey. Just defending myself.

  223. hshockeyfan

What was the score of the North/Somers game?

  224. cdf

    1. you can’t come off the bench to go after someone thats an automatic game misconduct
    2. marasco got ejected for “abusing the official”, when the CN player who came off the bench after retreating from hitting marasco behind the net came back and hit him again where joe bumped into the ref

video tape should show it all

  225. sec1 fan

Whatd people thing of Pelhams all freshmen line? #10 #25 and #18?

  226. tournyfan

North’s a real class act. For 2 games #9 & #26 played regularly (power play & penalty kill too) in the 3rd period of blow-outs. Sportmanship??? Surprised SNS coach shoke hands with North’s coach after the game.

  227. cn fan

Marasco caused the issue by running the goalie. It does not matter if in was in the crease or not he ran the goalie after the play and CN reaction is justified and expected. If he got tossed for mouthing to the officials then maybe the coach should address that issue.

  228. The Cash Cab

    To cn fan-
Marasco didnt run the goalie, he made the proper play of crashing the net to get the rebound (which must be done against a good goalie like McIndoe) and either was going so fast they just collided or got shoved by one of the CN players.
Yea, CN has every right to defend their star goalie, but not to overreact and have the whole team come in on one guy.

  229. WP Fan

Decided to stay after the WP game to see if the Willows/Marasco hype was all it was made out to be. Willows was phenomenal, and still remained a class act throughout the game. He handled the goalie situation with Marasco well and the rest of the game was not chippy. Wasn’t able to see much with Marasco, but his movement on the ice seemed pretty flawless.

What really surprised me was the way Shumann(however you spell it) represented himself after scoring in a 9-1 game. I can understand celebrating when the score is close, but this kid was going insane when there was clearly no shot that S/NS was coming back. His stats may look impressive, but everyone at the game could recognize that Willows is a leader, and Shumann is a show off.

  230. Al Bundy

Can Stepinac hang with CN? I hate that maxpreps isn’t up yet becuase I can’t see who Step has played against.

Can ayone give a recap on Stepinac’s season so far.

I know that hey have some excellent skaters. Should be a good test for both teams.

  231. Al Bundy

It’s to bad that Joe Marasco was taken out of the game. Although I’m a CN rooter, I wasn’t their so will not comment on the circumstance.

I’m impressed with him as a 3 sport star athlete, rare these days in the era of sports specialization, excelling in lacrosse, football and hockey. It’s amazing he can play all 3 at such a high level. I’d think he was looking forward to playing against the CN hockey duo.

  232. Suffern

I favor North vs Stepinac. I have not seen Stepinac yet but with a short roster they will have trouble. I think that young line Pelham put out was fine. They did not look like they did nt belong. The smaller schools have no choice sometimes but to put the young ones in there. It is a nice opportunity for those players. Pelham played two freshman D men to right???? Will pay off in the long run for that team it always has.

  233. Stepinac/Shuman

Stepinacs whole team is Miano he had 4 goals in a 6-4 win against Brewster and 7 goals in a 7-4 win vs WP but thats all they have CN should win easily

I feel I have to comment about Shuman I saw the game and the people on the blog who support him must be CN fans I am not a CN supporter or a CN hater however Shuman did celebrate too much not to knock him but theres no need for that whens its 10-1 notice the SNS team went after Shuman alot more then Willows who by the way pushed his own teamates off Marasco which shows CN overeacted a little

  234. sec1 fan

Yea one of the D-Pairs was 2 freshmen also. 23 and 24 are juniors, 16 & the other kid, I forget his #, are freshmen. 6 is a sophomore and 13 is a junior.

  235. giants hater

Im a Suffern fan but I have the most respect for North. I understand that North had a bad season last year but they are a large school bigger than Rye I’m discusted that Suffern won’t be playing North. The schedules should go by large school Suffern , Mam small schools Rye , Pelham? shouldn’t that be the way schedules are handed out?

  236. NO

No, giants hater. that is not how the schedules should be made. They are made using the power league system. Sorry

  244. running it up

Have a new forum here, I would like to hear some peoples comments on.

After seeing a few games this year, there have been some mis matches.

We have heard time and time again about Mamos 13-2 over ETB, this year a league 2 team has scored a ton. And we had a 10-2 game in league 4. If the league 2 team stops scoring, would they be hurting themselves when it comes time for individual honors at the end of the year? Because if their stats are equal to league 1 stats, some would say to go with the league 1 player. In the league 4 game this year the team with 10 eventually stopped shooting, they actually had a player with a breakaway who just dumped the puck into the corner and played keep away. Is this the way to go? Also especially in the beginning of the year here, you want your team to gel, because lets be honest there is not enough ice time to go around, and these games are practice for a lot of teams, you don’t want your 1st line off the ice after the 1st period.

I can see both sides of the fence, you don’t want to embarrass anyone, but you don’t want to have players not playing their best. I just want to see other peoples thoughts.

  245. mimi

    final

  246. Suffer/Pelham

Being in the back video taping the suffern pelham game Saturday, i noticed that the goal suffern was given, actually didn’t go in. Pelham’s goalie #30 made a remarkable last second save right on the goal line. The ref happened to blow the whistle before the puck even reached the goal line. Kind of shows the game was chippy.

Squires worked hard to get where he is. He is from WP, left to play in the USJHL and ended with being rewarded with D I success. Clare left HS to play junior Hitman and was rewarded with the National team. They are the exception to HS hockey. Speaking of which Marasco ran Mcindoe tonight. CN acted appropiately by defending their star goalie. From what I was told Marasco ran another goalie in a scrimmage weeks ago and gave the kid a concussion. I guess playing 3 sports gets confusing for him sometimes. 3rd and goal, hard to the net, lacrosse whatever.

  269. Just a Fan

I just have to say how very disgusted I am by Observant Pessimist’s nitpicking and negativity. I haven’t the faintest idea who O.P is, but I have to say that it is completely and totally inappropriate to criticize and and NAME other people’s children like that. I also have to wonder if O.P is a disgruntled parent, or WORSE, a team member. Way to be divisive!! Anyone who knows those lines so specifically and bothers to rip so many members of the team clearly has a grudge against the team- not just an interest in HS hockey worth posting on this blog. Get a life! Teams change in HS sports. That’s how is goes. RTH, like other teams in the area, is faced with the challenge of creating something new this year to follow up terrific seasons that many critics thought could never be for them! RTH proved those critics wrong! RTH handles themselves with sportsmanship, respect and class. Too bad O.P can’t say the same for him/herself!

  270. Hockey..no crap

I went to watch the Suffern/Pelham game last night. Suffern did not look that good. the big scorers #21 and 15 did not do anything all game. Everytime a Suffern kid got hit, he lost it and had to take himself off the ice. They only played 3 D, they looked very tired in the third. Pelham looked alot fresher, they played a full 3 lines. Suffern wont be able to play like that against the stronger teams. Thank god for the Suffern goalie.

  285. yep

    to observer,
that is exactly how i felt.

  286. 411

Looks like that kid quit or was gassed off the team that night. The kid took a few cheap shots at the Suffern kids and took the penalty that Suffern scored the goal on. My kid knows him from travel jumps back and forth from team to team so who knows

  287. LoHud Hockey

From what I saw, after he took the penalty, he got into a bit of a shouting match with some of his teammates, then Witz went over to try and calm him down and he started yelling at Witz. Probably not the best idea in the world to show up your coach like that, so it doesn’t surprise me that he would bench the kid. As much as he would have liked to get his 300th career win against Suffern at SOR, it sets a bad precedent when you let the kids yell at you in front of 700 or so fans and don’t do anything about it.

  288. Al Bundy

I view Suffern’s win over a veteran and well coached Pelham team, perhaps Pelhams best team in years, as a very impressive start.

Last years Suffern team is an unfair comparison for this years team. Probably more like the preceding couple of years when Suffern started off slow, losing a game or two, but by years end was playing it’s best hockey. Suffern never has played 3 regular lines. Team defense and goaltending. They’ll be fine.

  289. pitsburg playa

  290. suffern

Observer, I thought Pelham was one of the stronger teams???

  291. Observer

I am not bashing Suffern. I just think that if Suffern is going to win they need to score more then 1 goal a game. Gabriel in goal is good but he can get rattled. And playing 3 D in close games is going to be tough. The D looked real sluggish in the third. There is no way Suffern can play 3 D all year without them either faultering or getting hurt. Suffern is not known as a tough team. They are more finesse. It looks like once they get hit, they loose it. Numer 21 of Pelham knew it, and was getting in the heads of some of the Suffern players. Once you get knocked off the puck, its hard to get back on. All these other teams know, once you shut down 21 of Suffern, they won half the battle. Pelham played 3 full lines and really stuck it to Suffern. Pelhams lines were well rested, and Suffern were sucking wind. The Suffern goal was a lucky shot on a average goalie. Thats just my observation

  292. Foolish

Hey harold, when is max preps going to put up scores? I can’t handle reading these blogs anymore to get scores. Too many critics for me and the stuff these people say, OMG learn the game. And folks this is high school hockey, it all stinks, deal with it!

  293. Suffern Dad

I agree with suffern and Al Bundy. All pre-season, people have been talking about Pelham as one of the strongest teams. Some people have ranked them second behind Mamaroneck, with Suffern ranked third. Observer comments that Suffern won’t be able to play like that against the stronger teams? Pelham is a “stronger” team. Winning games is what counts and Suffern has been doing that with team defense, great goaltending and opportunistic scoring. I agree the offense did not fire on all cylinders, but they still found a way to beat a strong team.

  294. mimi

i’m sure this will be corrected once the stats get organized (along with maxpreps), but iona is 3-2, not 1-2 as stated in the paper…(the 2 wins not included in the journal news were over farrell and burke catholic)

  295. Al Bundy

I hope the Journal news paid the Max Preps bill? I never remember this being as late for any season.

  296. suffern/pelham

#15 got the boot after the end of the 1st period. One of those “you cant fire me cause i quit” situations. Lo Hud hockey is a retard. You say that Witz lets the “kids” yell at him, when #15 is the only one trying to talk back to the coach. The captains tried to put 15 in line but even then he just started cursing off the captains. At that point, Witz benched him for the rest of the period and the rest is history… probably a blessing in disguise if you ask me. Overall, Witz handled himself really well. Once 15 showed no respect, he got benched, a much wiser move than showing the all the people at sporto that he could yell right back into 15’s face.

  297. Terrible

I guess the Journal didn’t realize that Hockey season starts during Thanksgiving week. There’s no excuse that the Hockey Max Prep isn’t up and running. I really don’t want to hear that they had to wait until the football season was over. One has nothing to do with the other.

Hockey schedules and teams for ALL THE HIGH SCHOOLS, have been known for over one month! Why the Hockey Max web site isn’t up and running makes no sense. Looks like we might have to wait until next year!

I can’t understand why the Journal waited so long? It’s TERRIBLE, the Hockey community deserves a little more respect.

Witz did what he had to do. This kid was a distraction all along. He thought he was too good for Pelham. Witz has earned the respect to not put up with kids like that. When he yelled at him he took him out of the box and sat him squarly in the middle. He didnt take a shift the rest of the game, and he wont take one for the rest of the year.

  300. too bad for all involved

I m sure the Pelham coach tried to keep that kid and this is not the first incident that kid has had. I remember a few years back the kid quit his team for something that happened in that awful overtime win against my Rye Garnets. He quit after the game over something. Suffern must have played a marvelous game but it had to be hard for the kids and coaches on Pelham to have to deal with that in the middle of the game. You cannot have players think they are above the team. Coaches can try to work it out and give the player room but once it effects the team something needs to be done. The kid is a nice player certainly not in their top 6 so it will hurt Pelham but maybe losing the distraction will be better in the long run. Too bad for everyone involved.

  301. Terrible

    Thanks Westchester Hockey,

What ever happened to the Kiss concept (Keep it Simple Stupid). The new Max prep website is Terrible! They actually paid someone to revamp their old web site.

    Unbelieveable! LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

  302. lynn chernetz

OP is obviously frustrated with the RTH team and how they played in the WP tournament. This parent/fan/player or whoever should have applied the 24 hour rule to him/herself before blogging. Surely, the team is doing the best they can as they try to work out new lines. Any school who is lucky enough to have a few really good players during a season will win games. Duh!! When these kids graduate from their respective schools, their school teams may be in a similar position to RTH. Maybe RTH shouldn’t be in league 1 – this season will tell. But, give the kids a break. They play for the same reason kids on better teams play – they like playing and don’t want to give up.

  303. Suffern Dad

to suffern/pelham, I think you misunderstood LoHud Hockey’s comment. He wasn’t saying Witz mishandled the situation. He was saying that as much as it might have been tempting to let 15 play to help Witz try to win # 300, he had to do what he did, which was bench the kid.

  304. C'mon

Remember that Suffern won on a goal that probably never went in.

  305. LoHud Hockey

    suffern/pelham-

If you choose to resort to calling me names like a child, then so be it, but you may want to work on your reading skills before resorting to that. If you go back and read my post, I was not saying that Witz lets the kids yell at him. I pointed out that this one kid yelled at him in front of 700 people and it sets a bad precedent if he lets the kids do that and doesn’t do anything about it, so I’m not surprised that he beched the kid.

I also pointed out that the decision may not have been the easiest to make for Witz, but I guess I didn’t elabortae on that enough, so here it goes. It was a scoreless game against Suffern at SOR (Where Suffern hasn’t lost a regular season game in almost three years) and Witz is stuck on 299 career victories. This kid is an assistant captain and to that point was logging quite a bit of ice time in a close game meaning Witz must have thought pretty highly of his abilities coming into the season & this game. When weighed against shouting at your coach, it should be a no-brainer to bench the kid, but some coaches would probably let the kid slide so he can keep him on the ice for the big game. I applaud Witz for putting a lid on the BS ahead of trying to put op the W.

#15 on Pelham is Mike Duffy

To foolish if high school hockey is so bad why read maxpreps?

to cash cab if the goalie is out of the crease you still can not hit him. Hope you never get a hockey rule question while in the cab.

  308. C'mon C'mon

If it never went in, why was it tallied on the scoreboard?

  309. C'mon

The hometown Ref said it did go in. It really dont matter, whats done is done. 2 even teams, good game.

    Re: Maxpreps
The Journal News has switched from MaxPreps, which is owned by CBS, to HighSchoolSports.net, which is owned by our parent company (Gannett).
    beginning this season.

  311. lohuds on the money

Lohud you are right on this one. The kid is out of order. The Pelham coach is not dealing with that and thats why he has the program he has. It sets the right example that its not win at all costs. First game of the season in Sufferns building cannot be bigger than that. Glad to see the coach do the right thing even though a big W was at stake

  312. new duo

Willows and Shuman are the Rui & Sigona of last year. Two excellant and talented players stuck in league two and will be putting up huge numbers. I think if Rui didnt miss the 7 games he did, the wp duo’s numbers would of been equivalent to those that the North duo will be putting up, and it going to be huge. The only thing I’m concerned about, is why doesnt Willows play juniors. He clearly is good enough, but yet he doesnt even excel playing AA midgets.Sort of puzzling with the numbers he can put up in high school

  313. WP fan 2

I didn’t see yesterdays WP game, but the newspaper listed a goalie that is not on the team making 38 saves. Did he (or the real WP goalie) really have 38 saves?

  314. mountie style

harold im sorry but i was just playing around with highschoolsports.net and its a very weak site. any chance they will add some features that we have grown to expect from maxpreps. i couldnt even find the standings

  315. icehole

    FYI—Didn’t see game BUT===
A minor or a major penalty shall be imposed on a player who
body checks or charges a goalkeeper while the goalkeeper is
within his goal crease or privileged area.
A goalkeeper is NOT “fair game” just because he is
outside his privileged area. A penalty for interference or
charging should be called in every case where an opposing
player makes unnecessary contact with a goalkeeper.
Likewise, Referees should be alert to penalize goalkeepers
for tripping, slashing or spearing in the vicinity of the goal.

  316. icehole

    Also
A player on the ice makes physical contact with an Official
following a decision made by that Official. What penalty or
    penalties shall be assessed?
A misconduct, game misconduct or match penalty, depending
on the severity of the offense. Rule References 601(e.1 & g.1).
In all instances where abuse is physical in nature, a minor
penalty for Unsportsmanlike Conduct shall not apply.

  317. refs 55

icehole you are in the wrong book all schools now play federation not NCAA. But a goalie is not fair game in either rule book

  318. Mountie Watcher

I saw #15 act out the Suffern Pelham game. He almost destroyed two Suffern players from behind with bush league slashes. The first time, he got away with it, but the second time he got nailed and got the penalty. That is when he blew up on his teammates and started shouting at them from the penalty box. I think the kid is a senior and word is that he always thought he was better than everyone else. This is just the same old sad story with players and parents pumping their kids up as big prospects when they really have no clue. They all need a reality check. Been that way since forever. Players and parents can t put themselves above the team, especially in this league.

  319. WP Tournament

Tough break for Step. Their bench is short and they lost 2 great players. With them it would have been a different game.

  320. CHSHL Fan

What two players are you talking about?

  321. Observer #2

gabriel and pelhams goalie both held there teams together in that game, who is pelhams goalie?

  322. no way

“WP Tournament” And if Willows skate didn’t break in the first period the score would have been 10 to 3. Move on worry about next week

  324. WP Tournament

All I said is that it would be a different game I didn’t say Step was going to win but who knows.

  325. hockeydude

Yo Pitsburg Playa, you right. They are all insanely good, suffern is winning states.

  326. Charlie Everywhere

    Hey “Terrible,”

First of all, come up with a name for yourself. I’m tired of people treating the “Name” field like it’s a subject line. Look at icehole. He/She is making an effort.

You say you don’t want to hear about football season interfering with hockey coverage because one thing has nothing to do with the other. That would be true if Harold’s right nut could cover football while his left nut wrote the hockey preview and prepared MaxPreps for the coming season. Unfortunately, he’s just one man with one sack and you’ll just have to learn to wait.

  327. jordan peck

    i gave willows my skates

  328. mountie man

whats the story with that kid duffy? and did hill really break his patella?

  329. All or nothing

Shuman has been doing this hollywood garbage for yrs and will eventually pay for it,but playing in the league he is in will only make it worse but since CN went L2 he came back knowing what he could do,do you think he would have done this last yr with the older Shuman and both Willows gane not a chance.
Who ever above asked about the older Shuman and Willows, Willows is at Suny CANTON but doesn’t seem to be playing at this time unless he is hurt, not sure .
And from what I know Shuman is not playing at Syracuse.

  330. Bauer Hour

There were minor penalties called on both #21 of Somers and # 18 of Clarkstown. The penalties did not show up on the board because they were coincidental. The 4 minute major was for the game disqualification.

  331. Philley

Showing some love to this topic “new to this wordpress”. I defiantly agree with it also. If you really think about it than it all makes alot of sense
