Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley with Harold Gutmann

The week ahead

December

Today

Pelham-John Jay: Games between Rye, Pelham and John Jay will always be interesting this season because of what it means for the DII playoffs (the top two in League 1 get home-ice until the finals), but this could also be a landmark game for Pelicans coach Ed Witz. According to this list, Witz would be only the third coach in Section 1 history to win 300 games.

Scarsdale-New Rochelle: This is a really interesting matchup to see how far New Rochelle has risen, and a great chance to see Richie Prunesti. As a ninth grader last season, he put up 31 goals and scored four against White Plains in the playoffs. He was selected for the USA Junior Olympic tournament this summer and is pure natural goal scorer, a highly prized commodity, especially among scouts.

Wednesday/Thursday

White Plains-Rye and Pelham-White Plains: White Plains begins an interesting back-to-back, so we will see pretty quickly how the Tigers will fare in their new League 1 surroundings. A sweep would surprise me, but a split could raise some eyebrows and isn’t out of the question.

Thursday

Iona Prep-Stepinac at Murrays: A rematch from the CHSHL finals at the site of Game 3, when the Gaels won in OT. The teams split six great games last year, and while Iona Prep appears to have more returning, I’m sure Stepinac will be waiting eagerly for this one.

Friday

Friday means Brewster Ice Arena. No quadruple-header this time, just a triple-header, leading off with Pearl River against one of the League 4 favorites, Kennedy/Putnam Valley. Next is E/T/B’s first league game against Brewster, which should be very interesting. And finally comes Nyack/Tappan Zee, Section 1’s newest member, taking on Carmel.

Saturday

Probably the first huge day of the season. Lots of great action everywhere. I’ll be at Rye-Mamaroneck, the two sectional champions from last season. Also, Clarkstown North faces Rye Town/Harrison. The Rams aren’t in League 1, so this is a rare opportunity to see them against a power-league team. North Rockland gets its League 2 campaign going against Brewster, while Yorktown and E/T/B stage a rare afternoon game (1:15 at the Ice Hutch), so you can start the day early if you want. And Scarsdale, Mahopac and Fox Lane head to the Ice Hutch for the Pelham tournament.

Sunday

The championship game of the Pelham tournament will pit the Mahopac-Pelham winner against the Scarsdale-Fox Lane winner. If it’s Pelham-Scarsdale, it should be an intense, down-to-wire game (for some reason, the Raiders always seem to play their best against the Pelicans). Of course, League 1 Mahopac can get a real confidence boost from winning after finishing seventh in the White Plains tournament, while League 3 Fox Lane can regroup from last season and use a title as a springboard if it moves through this talented field. Also Sunday is Clarkstown North-Yorktown. We’ll see if the Rams will be challenged in League 2.

Thoughts on these games? Any big ones I’m missing?

    Harold,

    Nice write-up.

    Re CHSHL,

Let’s see what Stepinac can do against Farrell the day after the Iona-Stepinac for a late night Friday-Coney Island game

    Stepinac at Farrell, 10PM

Also, Fordham pits a couple of local games this weekend…
-Friday, Harvey at Fordham, 5:15, Playland (first look at Harvey?)
-Sunday, St. Anthony’s at Fordham, 6:30, Playland

Couple of RCDS games as well…
-Friday, Princeton Day and RCDS, 5
    -Saturday, Hoosac at RCDS, 3

  2. Postman

lets start talking about Suffern Hockey, thats the only thing that matters

  3. ted

Chris Seymour is gonna be knocking kids out… I saw him working out at powerhouse one time benching 300 lbs and squatting 350 lbs… he’s ridiculous!!

  4. ted

    He’s on Somers/North Salem

  5. fanotgame

Harold- Agree the back to back WP games should be interesting. With their early start and Thanksgiving tourney, WP is 1/4 the way thru their season on Thursday. Rye has the two Tigers this week and the Mounties next Wednesday. An interesting and challenging week for the Garnets.

  6. mountie style

    harold,

do u have any information on the west genny tournament this weekend that suffern is attending? any information on the other 3 teams as well

  7. mimi

    mountie style,

the other 3 teams in the tournament are aquinas, saratoga and the host (west genesee).

  8. ramsss

    Rams will steamroll titans 9-1

  9. mountie fan

Pelham is going to destroy John Jay. Their first line should walk through jay’s defense with ease. Prediction, 6-2, all six goals from the first line on pelham.

  10. mimi

thursday at murray’s should be interesting

stepinac’s bench is half the size of iona’s

  11. Tourny

Suffern will loose both games this weekend.

  12. My Hockey Team

    Tourny,

The word is spelt – lose, not loose

  13. LoHud Hockey

    My Hockey Team-

The word is spelled spelled, not spelt.

And for that matter, it is Tourney, not Tourny.

  14. Tourney

My bad, I used to hate English

  15. Stepinac Fan

Yeah, we’re eagerly awaiting Iona. All I remember is Yankowski getting schooled by Cambria and then King Schooling Reagan. Game… Set…Match….Championship to Iona.

    Time for Payback!

  21. My Hockey Team

LoHud Hockey, I will accept the one correction. The other is Tourny’s mistake. Thank you for helping out Sr. Mary Wastebasket. Now give us a history lesson

    Pelham 5 John Jay 2
    Andrew Emerson: 3 Goals
    Marc Flory: 1 Goal
    Mike Mamone: 1 Goals
    1st line: 5 goals.

I think rofosky scored one for Jay.
1st Period and 3rd Period Pelham absolutely dominated, Jay might have had the puck out of their zone for 2 minutes in the 1st. The third period turned very physical with Pelham dropping John Jay kids left and right. Marc Flory had 3 huge hits, even Danny Shea (95 Pounds) had a big hit.

  23. random

it will be interesting to see if white plains will be able to cope with two solid teams from league 1 back to back (rye wed.-Pelham thurs.)

  26. birdman fan

Pelham’s win was a great one. Coach Witz finally getting to the 300 wins mark.

  27. jrobs12

Pelham was flat second period, but 1st and third, they laid it down on jay.
best hits came in 3rd period, including Danny shea (95 pounds, freshmen) decking a kid, and adrian rivera laying a kid out with a forearm extension
nice start to the home games

  28. player

There is a game missing on your blog for Saturday. Pawling is playing agians Byram Hills Brewster Ice Arena 8:50 pm. This should be an interesting game and should be a good indicator to how well they will do in the rest of their league games.

  29. birdman fan

John Jay held it down in the second period scoring two goals to tie the game. In the third though in went down hill. They were so soft, players getting knocked down to the ice after every hit. If they want to be a threat this year they have to learn to stay on their feet.

  30. hshockeyfan

Pelham definitely dominated the third. Jay ran out of gas. However, the secnd was all Jay and even in the first the dominated play. Don’t know what game you were watching. I believe shote were 30-28 jay. Pelhams first three goals came off of turnovers in the “D” Zone. Fourth goal was a flip shot from the side of the net. One of the freakiest goals I ever saw at any level. Pelham had one good goal.

After all, wasn’t Pelham supposed to blow JJ out? That didn’t happen. 2-2 after 2. Mamaroneck is a much better team than Pelham. Not even close.

  31. jrobs12

ah, 5-2, in hockey thats not a blow out? i guess its not 7-1, as per typical john jay style blow out, but i’d say they got it handed to them today. Pelham had an awful second period. with out, no 2 goals scored, no tying of the game at 2-2 for a bit.

  32. raiderfan

I saw the last two periods of the JJ/Pelham game. Good game until the end. JJ had them on their heels for a bit there.

I like to watch the “D”. #13 on Pelham was flying up and down the ice and #23 on JJ was as good defensively as I’ve seen so far this year.

  33. hshockeyfan

Pelham won and hats off to them and coach Witz on 300.

After their first five JJ is very young. I will say this, they left the rink tonight knowing not only that they can skate with this team but that they could beat them with a little more work and experience.

  34. jrobs12

its hard to beat a team after losing 5-2. What you witnessed was the classic Pelham 2nd period slump. That and teh penalties in the first and some of second period is what allowed jay to hang with a team like pelham. pelham’s got to fix their penality problem (a large contribution to the suffern loss), and come out strong after the 2nd period starts (notice that was when jay scored their only two games). whatever though, we’ll know what pelham is as a team after rye, the rematch of the suffern game, and mamoraneck

  35. sec1 fan

Hahaha is that a joke? Did you watch the game? The first period was laughable. John Jay couldnt break out, couldn’t do anything on offense. Their power plays looked like they were on the penalty kill. Of course their first 4 goals came of turnovers in the D zone, Jay never made it out of the d-zone, Pelham had to get the puck somehow…. I mean the second period was ugly for Pelham, but the 1st and 3rd looked like it was C-North 2007-2008 out there in black.

  36. jrobs12

#13 is a god among men

  37. sec1 fan

Shut up robertson. I want to have an argument with this guy.

    Close….. so close

  39. Bigfan

    Hey iiimmmm bacccckkkk

  40. center

new ro was up 2-0 after 2 periods

  41. jrobs12

    new ro is good?

  42. Jay

Not a terrible showing for Jay tonight. They did take advantage of Pelhams weak second period. I think Pelhams talent overwhelmed Jay in the third. I also think this about Pelham, I think they are playing three lines and 6 defense man again as they did in the Suffern game. Maybe they are not all that concerned about getting early W`s and are trying to build a team for the longhaul. playing those younger kids against Suffern and Jay both L1 games must strengthen that team immensly I would guess. Jay Rye and Pelham can be no worse than third in the sectionals so maybe playing more players in these regular season games and getting these young guys experience makes them much better come February.

  43. pruNASTY

New Ro won 5-3. Anybody who saw that game (especially Gluck)now knows how good he is. He only scored twice but holy crap! Oliverio got 2 goals to but they were both garbage goals on scrambles. Scarsdale dominated the first period, then new ro dominated the second and the third was just alot of sloppy and flooky goals for both teams.

  44. Scarsdale

One of the BEST backhand goals by Prunesti for his second goal. Raiders will improve as coach starts to use more players. First line was dead in third period.

  45. New Ro

New Ro got past Scarsdale tonight. great for New Ro as it is a strong move forward. Not so great for Scarsdale as it could mean a strong move back. Still very early though

  46. fact and fiction

shots in Jay Pelham game 28-16 Pelham

  47. NewRo-Scarsdale

I will say it was a great game and the the two stars [Olivero-Prunesti] did not disapoint. Olivero had 2 rebound goals showing although he is skilled he still goes hard to the net and for Prunesti he had 2 of the best goals I have seen so far in this young season, one goal came from killing a 5 on 3 and he went top shelf from the top circles with Olivero on him and the second goal was a backhand top shelf also another star for NewRo was Feliu who made the big saves and I think out played Gluck

  48. Pelican Flash

hats off to ed witz for getting his 300th win. the team had a really good third period and took over the game. coach showed real class in thanking the team and threw out a special thanks to all players who have worn the pelham jersey over the time he has coached the varsity. he has never put himself before the team and this is a great honor well deserved.

  49. hshockeyfan

JJ played three forward lines with the 3rd line being all freshman. Mixed in a 3rd “D” line, again all freshman. Pelhams 1st line was out every other shift (they scored all five goals). I believe one against 1st “D”. JJ doesn’t really have a first “D” as their two best defensemen are split to balance lines on reg shifts. First forward lines were even skill wise but Pelham was bigger and more physical and that took it’s toll in the 3rd. Overall not a bad showing for JJ. I spoke with John Orlando after the 2nd and he was admittedly surprised at Jay’s play.

  50. hshockeyfan

I agree, 300 wins is a great accomplishment. Congrats!

  51. George

IonaVStepinac will be an interesting game Thursday night . Its always been a classic battle and its very good hockey. Both teams will come to play so the outcome is a toss up . Predictions ?

  52. A Quick View

I saw both the Pelham JJ game and the Scarsdale New Ro game.
First observation is the Section 1 game is mostly much faster and goals come from smart passing rather than a defensive one on one breakdown. Pelham is a good defensive team although have to work on staying out of the box.
The New Ro Scarsdale game goals were mostly scored by big older faster forwards scoring on younger d men or less skilled dmen. It should be noted that New Ro plays some 8th graders who play the game with poise. Umbro a forward got his first last night while Kenny the 8th grade Dman made very few mistakes. New Ro has one big D man who is slow to react got beat a few times and is a bit of a liability. Scarsdale is not a deep team but capalized on Defensive mistakes. If I was Tozzo I would work on that D some as half his blue line is an issue for teams that have greater depth going forward. The difference between Sections
    was obvious to me.

  53. fanotgame

Tonite at Playland I expect a tight, low scoring battle between WP and Rye. If you don’t count open net goals, the last 3 matches between these two teams have each been decided by a single third period goal. WP has two big forwards (McCarrick and Altieri) and 3 solid D men. Rye has one of the best stopper D men in the Section (Sganga), very good goaltending and opportunistic scoring from 3 solid, balanced forward lines that really commit to defensive play.

  54. pp7

just wait until pelham starts getting some production out of lines other than their first..only a matter of time

  55. ICEFAN

I think Iona will beat Stepinac

  56. Al Bundy

    To “A quick view”.

I’ll presume you where referring to Pelham when speaking about scoring being created from “smart passing” rather than the other teams defensive breakdowns. That would be expected, Pelham is 1 of probably 4 teams with Forward, Defense and Goaltending strength.. and excellent coaching(the other 3 are the usual suspects Suffern, Mamaroneck and Rye).

After that, including, the remaining league 1 teams and other powers like New Ro, Clarkstown North, ETB, North Rockland, etc. . most teams have weaknesses that can be exploited by one of the 4 very good coaches of those teams.

So unless you see a game with the “elite 4”, you are likely to see many games where a skilled forward takes advantage of a young or underskilled defenseman or goalie. Or an underskilled forward cannot advance the puck against strong D-men.

  57. patience

Think you are right about Pelham. Looks like they are going to develop more players and use the start of the season to accomplish that. The first group can carry them until the rest get going

  58. good call Al

Agree with AB. In regards to Pelham as a fan of Pelham they play many young players. I think its good but it could hurt them in some tough games

  59. wp fan

Altho our team is good this year I just don’t see them scoring on benincasa. But well definately wreck pelham on thursday cause they are small and slow

  60. A Quick View

    Al Bundy
My point was only looking at how Pelham and JJ moved the puck vs New Ro and Scarsdale. In every case goals in the New Ro Scars game came on a defensive breakdown which resulted in a one on one battle to the net/ while in the Pelham JJ game there were little transitional breakdowns good backchecking and the offense had to pass to get shots. The skill level difference was obvious. Don’t get me wrong it was good hockey either way but Section 1 looked to play a more decipline game which meant they had to move the puck for opportunity. And in seeing it they certainly moved the puck well at times… Must be a thrill however for 8th graders to play varsity hockey while lots of Witz kids 10th graders don’t see time.

  61. Confusion

I think you mean League 1 there, A Quick View. Not Section 1. Everyone is Section 1.

  62. mimi

strongly suggest whoever is going to watch iona-stepinac (8:45 murray’s thursday) go a little earlier and watch the jv matchup…i’m assuming stepinac’s is close to nothing, as they barely have 3 lines/4 D on varsity…iona’s is fully stacked, as most know already, with a half dozen players between frosh and soph easily good enough to be dressing for varsity (their captain, #4, a big, strong d-man with a shot, #2, #3, #8, #9, another one, number in the 20s, who looks like a mini cody king, and the frosh goalie, imo better than both kaiser and gizzo…)

  63. mimi

    jv matchup is at 7

  64. to wp fan

maybe you missed the pelham john jay game, where pelham basically man handled jay physically. and you must know that pelham is always among the top teams in section 1 in terms of team speed..white plains really doesnt stand a chance against any decent team. they lost their WHOLE team last year let me repeat their WHOLE team when they lost rui and sigona..keep dreaming though

  65. mamk

i cant wait until the top four teams which usually are mamk suffern rye or pelham play eachother…this weekend should be interesting for mamk playing against rye, but the real test should be when mamk plays suffern and rye plays pelham…

my guess is mamk over suffern and pelham over rye but who knows… btw what league 1 teams does CN play this year and if they were to come out first in league 2. who wud they play in the playoffs first ( suffern or mamk/ considering they will either take 1st or 2nd place)? like would they play the 1st seed first or the second seed? it wud sure be a great game between CN and suffern and great to watch with willows and shuman.

  66. both are young

interesting takes on all the hockey. I watch both games at the Hutch arena and I certainly was impressed with New Rochelle. Glancing at the program for the John Jay Pelham game I noted that Pelham played quite a few players, some freshman. Jay had two really strong players but had trouble getting and enough puck to do anything. Pelham seemed to have flow to their play and a connection to the way they were playing. John Jay could have have gotten out of it earlier when Pelham missed some open nets and hit some red iron. I expected the Scarsdale team to allow fewer than 3 yesterday so I am surprised they allowed 5
I expect White Plains Rye and Pelham White Plains to be one goal events. Keep in mind that White Plains is a class or division 1 team and Rye and Pelham are in the other smaller school bracket.

  67. LoHud Hockey

    mamk-

CN has two League 1 teams on their schedule. They play RTH this Saturday at SOR and they play White Plains at Ebersole at the end of January.

As for who they would play in the playoffs, assuming they win League 2, they would be seeded 6th in the D1 Tourney and would face the #11 seed in the first round. Now assuming all the other D1 schools in league 2 (ETB, Mt. Pleasant, North Rockland, & Scarsdale) qualify for the playoffs, they would play whoever finishes higher in the league 3 standings between NewRo & Clarkstown South (From the talk on the blog, i would guess NewRo). Should one of the other 4 D1 teams in league 2 not qualify, then they would play whoever finishes lower in the standings between CS & NewRo (If one of them doesn’t qualify either, then then they would play the highest finishing D1 team in League 4 (most likely Sleepy Hollow/Irvington).

Assuming they get to the second round, they would be playing the #3 seed which (assuming Suffern & Mamk are 1 & 2 in whichever order) would be the team with the best record between WP, RTH, & Mahopac. Assuming they get by that game, then they would play the #2 seed which would be either Suffern or Mamk (assuming the #2 seed beats the #7 seed, which they should be able to do).

So after all that long-windedness, North’s most likely post-season route to the state tourney based on what I’ve seen & read so far would be NewRo then WP, then Suffern or Mamk in the semis and the other in the finals.

  68. fanotgame

So, by Lohud’s analysis (which I agree with), there is a pretty big incentive to finish as a #1 seed in DI. Your likeley semi opponent is Pac, while the #2 seed’s likely semi opponent is North. Looking at the WP tourney results (North #1, Pac #7), that is a pretty big difference at this stage in the season. Those Mamo/Suffern battles will be as intense as ever.

  69. Al Bundy

Thanks Lohud! It’s stil unclear to me but I’ll believe it if you said it.

I wish Suffern the best of luck and their great program another great season, but I’d love to see one more CN-Suffern game before CN loses Willows, Shuman and McIndoe next year. So a part of me is probably wishing Suffern the no. 2 seed to better make sure this game happens. A CN-Suffern final at West Point would also be a great event, although I’m sure Mamaroneck would have something to say about that.

  70. Al Bundy

Or I meant to say…Mamaroneck will do there best to see that a CN-Suffern game occurs in the semifinal.

  71. high school

informative posting for sure. I see the other league 1 teams playing a prominent role in deciding the fate of Suffern Mamaroneck and CN. All league 1 games are now so important with CN lying in the weeds

  72. The Game

This saturday night’s Rye vs. Mamaroneck hockey game at the Hommocks “Jungle” will be the place to be. Game time is 8:15 P.M. This local rivalry dates back at least 75 years. Get their early or you will not get in. The place will be rockin!!!!!!!!

  73. George

Did the kid from Pelham, #15, quit the Varsity hockey team

  74. new ro

So if new ro wins league 3 we would have to play the top team from league 2. We got screwed last year playing WP while SH/I got north and mahopac (and we probably would have beat both those teams last year). Now we move up a league and that is likely to happen again?

Prunesti isn’t going to have the numbers willows had sophmore year but just remember he didn’t have quality linemates willows had. I’ll admit he will play against weaker teams but he doesnt usually run up the score so hes probably not going score 6 goals when we play weak teams. No, i did not say he is better than willows, just something to consider.

I agree that most goals in lower leagues come from defensive breakdowns. Each team in our game had 1 goal were a dman hit it in on his goalie, scarsdales other 2 goals came from 2nd and 3rd chances on scrambles and new ro scored on a partial 2 on 0. The goaltending was good on each side but if either of us is going to make a run the defense needs to improve.

  75. mountie style

to all the people saying that teams are trying to be the number on seed to avoid north. understand this saying, it dosent matter what your seed, you still need to beat everyone. so whether sufferns #2 and they play north in the semis or its mamm. the other would still have to face north in the finals pending a win like everyone here is assuming. you cant get away from a team in a bracket. if north is so good and wants to advance to states then they will have to beat both suffern and mammaroneck. i feel worse for the #1 seed who could have to face them after a major upset win over the other. i think the 2 seed will have major momentum going into that finals up in west point

  76. Just a Fan

Not a dis—-but before we hand New Ro the L3 crown without playing a single teensy weensy game, let’s remember that Pawling has their scoring machine back and picked up the terrific JFK goalie. Pawling defense was light last year but is a year older now; they’ll be better. I think Marasco is at a totally different level as an athlete and that makes Somers exceptionally tough. And finally, Ossining beat New Ro twice last season and returns all except a couple of players. So I understand that New Ro jelled and is primed for a great season, but this league will be a dogfight to the bitter end.

  77. fanotgame

    Good point Mountie Style.

  78. cn

    Mountie Stlye

I don’t think anyone is saying that North is a sure win against Suffern or mammaroneck, I think if you have a choice this season to play CN or Mahopac in the semis you would want the #1 seed so to avoid a game against north. I am a CN fan but I think Suffern and Mammo would both be favored against North just from a depth factor alone.

  79. mamk

i agree with cn and its great how ppl are naming cn in the top 3 for d1. no one would have believed it until the season started. However i think its disappointing we wont see cn play wither suffern or mamk because we wont know until the semis if those 3 teams make it, of how cn stacks up with mamk or suffern and if cn either beats mamk or suffern in the semis the other team will have tons of pressure and be in shock and will now have to play an opponent who just beat there next best contender in the league 1 for d1. wow i wish cn the best of luck and i hope to see them in the semis and regardless who it is, they will be waiting for you. another point to make is why dont the coaches vote on what seed a team gets for playoffs and keep into consideration the leagues and everything but sort off how they do it for soccer. Playoffs would be matched up much better but regardless this system works anyways but we would not have had white plains be a number 6 seed and cn a 5 seed.

  80. QuickShot

Yes, #15 quit Pelham varsity during the Suffern game last Saturday. I heard this from many however, I am not for certain.

  81. honestly

mimi no one care about any jv and probably never will. even if iona’s jv is good there is no reason to come to murrays (the coldest rink around) and watch half a team who could barely skate for an hour and a half. odds are that you are a parent of some kid on the iona jv because we all know that no one follows jv hockey other than those who play it. stop trying to bring attention to your kid by telling people to come see a jv game because there are plenty of better things to do than that.

sorry. someone had to say it…

  82. Stop

The only reason CN would be considered in the top 3 in D1 is because of Shuman and Willows are doing all the scoring.. Without them they are nothing. They would have been good last year to, but Shuman wouldn’t play without Willows. They are both overrated, they are scoring because they are playing against weaker teams. Gaurantee, they play no where next year.

  83. Coach Chap

Congrats to a fine coach at Pelham Ed Witz on your 300th win, a great accomplishment!! You run a great ,respectful program with alot of great kids, keep it going ,see you on the ice, Your friend Coach Chap

  84. HOW

How is there not a Varsity Central Page for winter sports yet, we’re already multiple games into the season!!!!

  85. Mamaroneck VS Rye

Here’s a little rundown of Rye and Mamk for this weekend using last year matchups
    Mamaroneck
    Offense: Fine:16 goals 27 asssists. Glaser:13 goals 22 assists Jackson(6 games)6 goals 6 as
Defense; Hagan:7 goals 36 assists Zweig: 4 goals 18 assists
Goal: Glaser; 1.746 GAA, 47 GA, 705 saves —Strong offense this year, especially first line with Jackson fully healed from injury and already demonstrating impressive statitistics this season. Also the team returns 7 defensemen with the hidden but highly mentioned by Sophmore Christiansen allegedly praised by Massena coach, along with him Zweig a hard hitter and smart playmaker and Hagan the towering man with a blistering shot will make a great pair. Glaser in net should be a decisive factor after ability last year with 5 shutouts and talent to hold Suffern for the Section Title.
    Rye
    Offense: Beber:13 goals 1 assist Mundinger 19 goals 7 assists. Katsuta 5goals 9 assists
Defense: Talgo;3 assists Sganga: 6 assists
Goalie: Benincasa: 2.1447 GAA, 45 GA, 517 Saves —Rye brings a solid offense to the table this year with an impressive forecheck that could take any team by surprise if not prepared. The offense has potential to do grreat things if the motivation is there and is carried throughout games. However Rye may face problems defensively only returning 4 defensemen from last season. Although the D may not record good stats from last year like Mamk, they are good and have progressed. With the iffy nature of the D Goalie Benincasa will also be a very important asset to the team after demonstrating great performance last year and leading the team to a Section Title.

Overall I think the game will be very close with a clash between Rye coaching, and Mamaroneck talent. I would predict this game to be edged out 3-2 Mamk.(4-2 if there is an open net goal)

  86. sec1 fan

    I Disagree
    I say 5-2 Mamo

  87. good game

To go with the topic here, there is a good game lined up at WSA the Saturday at 9 pm that wasn’t mentioned, Mt. Pleasant(home) vs. Sleepy/Irv, also Ossining usually has a home game at 7 pm at WSA I am not sure who they are playing

  88. Not at all

Not on topic and not a good game, battle of scrubs

  89. honestly?

after seeing iona JV. they could be some varsity teams. Yes it is JV and no one cares. But these kids can skate

  90. mamk

any scores on rye vs wp?

  91. Taylor

    White Plains 4, Rye 3

  92. Taylor

Rye didn’t really impress me. WP is pretty good. They really outplayed Rye. Mundinger stands out but Rye overall is not as good as I expected them to be.

WP was taking stupid penalties or they may have won 4-0. #24 on WP was 1st star of the game.

  93. SH/I v. mt pleasent

some of the seniors on those teams played together when they were freshmen. btw there are atleast 3 players in that game as good or better than any player mamaronek vs rye mentioned, and thats not including a few underclassman who will be at that level soon.

  94. Rye mom

After the game Benincasa our star goalie sadly broke his arm on his way up the stairs in his house. The doctor said its a minor fracture and should only sideline him for about 3-4 weeks.

  95. Defense

The defense for Rye will pick up as the season goes. They always do

  96. section uno

jj has absolute no depth. Even though Rofofsky and Greenberg are to be top players in section 1, they are going to have a tough time winning any games this season

  97. Al Bundy

CN should still be an underdog to either Suffern or Mamaroneck.

New Ro – if you were not misplaced in league 4 last year, you would have possibly been in league 2 this year, where you belong, with a better playoff seeding possibility. Perhaps the program adminstrators were not aware of how good you’d be last year, but if thats the case it was poor planning on there part.

  98. nobody

    white plains 4 rye 3
good hard played game all around. white plains dominated for the most part.however they took some unneede penalties and gave up 2 sh goals.
    scorers
    mccarrick 1
    broderick 2
    variano 1

  99. predict

i predict 6-2 mamk against rye

  100. Sex-tion 1

how much has rye lost since last year that they would get pounded by mamk? theyre still in that top class of League 1 and still should be able to put up with the skill of Pelham Suffern and Mamk

  101. Benicasa

Way to completely make something up just to stir up problems. Bennicasa is fine, nothing happend to him. Find something else to do other than spread lies.

  102. Taylor

Rye just didn’t really get a lot of pressure on White Plains even after they got down 4-2. I started to feel that White Plains was definitely the better team. They have strong D. They aren’t that deep, I’d say 2 good lines and a third that can play to give the first 2 a rest.

Rye is good they just weren’t as good as I expected them to be. Rye scored 2 goals on a 5 on 3 power play in the 1st period. It was a confusing situation. White Plains #20 was called for 2 simultaneous penalties and then they took another penalty while still down 2 men. Then when Rye scored White Plains was still down 2 men. I think Rye scored the second goal with a 5 on 4 advantage. Anyway my point is that aside from that power play they really didn’t do much offensively.

  103. mimi???

first of all i agree with “honestly?.” no one cares about jv hockey nor does anyone follow it, though i have seen one of the games before a varsity one i watched and, first of all the iona jv is not great. that “number in the 20s that looks like a mini cody king” is the most inaccurate description i have ever heard; no one on that team is anywhere near as talented as cody king, rob molinaro, mike cambria, or alex lopez so dont even pretend to play that off as true. jv’s captain is big and talented, and probably should have been moved up but im not sure what happened with that. the best offensive players in iona that are sophs are on varsity and their names are lynett, tommy nolan, and nick pellow. the frosh goalie is also not impressive at all, especially not more impressive than the varsity goalies. i spoke to a player on the gaels varsity and gizzo has been starting and apparently had a great game against st. anthony’s as well as an average one against chaminade in which scoring could not be generated. in terms of defense the jv has an asst. capt. that looks good and the big capt. who obviously does a lot of good things-thats all-no where near as much talent as there is on the varsity. i highly doubt that you are really mimi because usually mimi makes a slight bit of sense, but whatever the case may be please do not spread completely ridiculous info on this blog. thanks

  104. mimi

    honestly,

if you actually read anything ive ever written on this blog, you’d realize i’m nowhere near a parent/coach lol

    agree with “honestly?”
the following jv programs could probably beat league 3, 4 and some 2 teams…and trust me, i’m not alone on this opinion…
    chaminade
    st. anthony’s
    iona
    fordham
    farrell

  105. mimi???

yea they could beat some league 3,4, and some 2 teams but first of all which games have you seen iona’s jv play?

  106. honestly?

    mimi…

i wouldnt say fordham, their JV is pretty week

  107. mimi???

whatever. i support iona either way and im not sure if u follow all the games they play but the iona prep jv does not have more talent than the current varsity team. if you have seen iona’s varsity play you would have saw how the fordham game was a result of sloppy play and bad goal tending. chaminade was the result of running into a great goalie that stopped 40 shots, and i missed the st. anthony’s game (the only win of that weekend) but from what i have heard the lopez, molinaro, and cambria line scored all the goals and the sophmore goalie gizzo played a big part in that win. i have been worried that the goal tending of iona would be its downfall but having heard that the sophmore was doing well and that news was slightly appeasing, though we should see how he does in a big game tomorrow if turnbull starts him. i think if the goalie ends up surprising everyone and doing well than iona’s odds go way up, not just for tomorrow but for the season in general.

  108. mountie style

mimi they could beat some of those lower league teams but that is why we dont watch league 3 or 4 games. check out some league 1 games like mammaroneck vs suffern and tell me you care about jv anymore

  109. NewRo-ClarkstownSouth

This should be a good game today. This should show how good both teams will do in the league and will see after the game who the real favorites are

  110. Rye pelham JJ

Dontt be surprised at White Plains knocking off Rye. There is a reason why there is a difference in D1 and D2 schools. Rye Pelham and JJ while they are in league 1 are still D2 schools. JJ has enrollment that is much higher than Rye or Pelham but they are still smaller. The White Plains Mamaronecks and other large schools should be on par or better than their D2 counterparts so dontt be surprised

  111. jv

got to be killing the better players on those jv teams to play there instead of varsity. the catholic league needs to wake up and drop that silly rule of not allowing freshman on varsity. It would be different if those younger players weren not good enough to play but they are. The Ionas Fordhams Chaminades and Stepinac are as just as good as league 2 and some league 1 teams so its not like the varsity catholic teams are so tough to make

  112. WP fan 2

re- Rye-Pelham JJ – hockey is an expensive sport that you can’t just pick up in middle school. Its not the size of the school, but rather the hockey eligible population as well as the emphasis on that sport in the town (see Yorktown Lacrosse). Thats why hockey is played in Leagues that have no bearing on school size

  113. A Quick View

Regarding IONA JV. Firt the Catholic Schools force Freshman to play JV as a Firmly followed rule.
Many of the kids playing on that particular JV team would start on any Varsity Team but are forced to play JV.
Although JV Hockey should not comand the attention that Varsity Hockey does and should many of these kids will be ready about next year as they will make a difference in Varisty Games. Just becasue Mimi mentioned it as a prelude to the Varisty game does not mean she was selling it as NHL Hockey. If your a fan of hockey you like to see talent and hard work. Some of you on this board are lost in your own worlds. Okay next year you can see many of the JV Players from many JV teams play varisty and make a difference in games. I route for good hockey, talent mixed in with hard work. Geeze!

  114. Al Bundy

I don’t buy the large school beat small school arguement either. That works in mostly in Football.

If thats the case than North Rockland should be dominating Suffern all these years.

High School hockey is simply developing 4-5 students in each class to become hockey players. If you do that well than you’ll have 20 or so freshmen through senior trained hockey players. You should than have a respectable program.

Developing those kids is the trick. A feeder program is key. It also helps if the high school varsity coach knows who his future players are when they are in elementary/middle school.

Unlike the more natural little league basebal, CYO Basketball and Pop Warner football feeder program, the hockey coach needs to get to the younger grades to identify his players. The top programs in the section do this.

  115. CHSHL JV

There is no steadfast rule about Freshmen or Sophmores having to play JV. It has varied from school to school and has also depended on how many kids are on the varsity team. Iona has a ton of kids in thier hockey program. As a result the coach not wanting to cut juniors/seniors kept players on the JV. Chaminade on the other hand seems to alway keep kids on the JV. Stepinac has no hard rule and in fact has a number of Freshmen on the varsity this year. Fordham last year had at least 3 Freshmen. This year they have none. It varies fron year to year usually to the benefit of the schools program. That being said it is better hockey for a 9th grader to play than having to sit on the bench of a public HS or worst yet play modified.

  116. to al bundy

you always do good posts I enjoy your opinions. I think that yes, you are right about the feeder and such. We are talking about all things being equal. North Rockland has a very diverse population. Pelham, Mamaroneck, Rye, JJ, are similar I think. White Plains has the affluence, the youth feeder program second only to Mamaroneck and its been there forever. They have tradition and the rink. If you want to say Pelham and Rye has that too, ok, all those can be equal for arguments sake. Now go school population. With 4 X`s as many boys in the school odds are that White Plains would have more kids playing hockey. Thats why they and Mamaroneck are the ONLY programs in Section 1 that has been able to field JV AND Modified teams in the last 20 years. That is a big factor. To be able to move JV kids, going into 10th or 11th grade onto the varsity, rather than doing what Pelham and Rye are forced to do and thats move 8th graders from modified to varsity. From watching my fave team year in and year out Rye, they regularly move 8th graders onto the varsity as 9th graders and those players play regular shifts because thats all they have. I am certain Pelham does the same. It would be nice to move 9th and 10th graders onto the varsity I bet

  117. east of the river

Al Bundy – all true. And then on top of that there are the vagaries of the school district borders. This is something that is forgotten by the L1 bigots. This isn’t travel, there’s no recruiting,so kids play where their families live.

A Quick View said it well—you should enjoy hockey at all levels – hard work and talent and enthusiasm for the game and learning to be part of a team and representing your school are what makes High School hockey worthwhile. Too much emphasis on the big boys in L1 (and let’s face it, there’s only 4 or maybe 5 teams that “matter” there anyway) and too much trash talk back towards the hundreds of other kids that play this sport – be it in L2/L3/L4, CHSHL A/B/C JV etc.

Having said all that——Harold – what do we have to do around here to get the L3 and L4 capsules posted. Believe it not the kids who play on those teams look forward to seeing those. It’s just about the only recognition they get all year on this blog or in the paper.

  118. LoHud Hockey

    east of the river-

I’ll at least give a little bit of a plug for League 4. Nyack/TZ beat Section 9’s O’Neill last night 4-3. While this wouldn’t normally be a big deal, considering Nyack hasn’t won a hockey game in over 2 years, I’d say it should be a decent story. I know they are now merged with TZ, but still. The head coach and a large portion of the kids on that team are from Nyack and sat through back-to-back winless seasons, so there are third-year varsity athletes on that team who experienced their first career victory yesterday.

  119. east of the river

LoHud – Hey, that’s great news. Congrats to the Hawks/Dutchmen on their first win and and as you said….... especially the kids on Nyack who have continued to compete, work hard and keep their heads up through some tough seasons.

  120. fanotgame

Congrats on a hard fought win for WP. Another 1 goal game with Rye. WP has two solid fwd lines and 3 good dmen. If their goalie is on, WP is capable of giving the top League One DI teams some trouble. The game was a little sloppy and choppy with lots of penalties on both sides (some of the questionable “holding”, “cross check” and “interference” variety)and lots of down time with the refs explaining calls to the benches and the score box. I think both teams scored at least 1 goal on a 5-3 advantage, one of Rye’s and two of WP’s other goals were scored on 5-4 power plays. The WP game winner came when the WP forward on a PP spun around and in the same motion slapped a bouncing puck out of the air thru the 5 hole. I thought the play was pretty even 5 on 5, but there was not enuf of that 5 on 5 play for my liking. Let the kids play. There were no crazy slashes or checks from behind. This young Rye team will be a work in progress thru the season. Coach truly believes in a 3 fwd line system, and currently has the top 3 fwds all on separate lines. Has yet to find consistency from fwds 7,8 and 9, partly due to injuries and ineligibilty. Defense is also missing 2 of the top 4 due to injury/ineligibility. All this will improve in the coming weeks.

  121. Do your job

I really can’t believe that MAXPREPS is not up and running. Poor job Harold and Gannet!

  122. Hockeyfan

Was at the WP/Rye game last night, here is my take. Way too much refereeing, I saw calls last night I have not seen in decades of playing/coaching/watching, including a delay of game on a face off!!! Someone needs to tell this ref that if he drops the puck in a timely manner this does not happen. There were some truly wonderful defensive plays, on great backchecking efforts that were rewarded with bogus penalties. Refs need to know they can ruin a game by over officiating. The one saving grace is that the poor refereeing seemed balanced and went both ways.
As for the teams, they were pretty well matched, WP was a bit bigger and was more aggressive along the boards and in front of the net and that may have made the difference. WP definately has an edge to them that needs to be managed or exploited if you are going to beat them. Maybe it is the all black uniforms :) . They definately belong in League 1 this year.

  123. let them play

what does let them play mean? So I guess you mean don’t call any penalties until it is out of control, then call everything. I would love to see one of you hacks get out on the ice and ref a game.

  124. Al Bundy

Harold did a very good job in the newspaper hockey preview.

I stil pay $19.50 a month for my Journal News subscription. I hope any blogger complaining at least buys a newspaper once in a while.

Every team in the section was listed and players to watch were named. I appreciate this because I notice that the other sports did not name every team.

As for Max Preps or the Gannet version of this…yes it is very late, not just for hockey, but for boys and girls basketball also. The Journal News management should get on this. I beleive that my $19.50 a month entitles me to this complaint.

  125. Hockeyfan

    “let them play”

Not sure who you are responding to, me or fanotgame. I am guessing fanotgame, since he used the phrase “let them play”. neither of our posts are/were derogetory, and no one stated “don’t call any penalties until it is out of control, then call everything” as you put in your post, that is obviously not the answer either. It would be mature of you not to call people names such as hacks, I personally played into college, refed for 6 yrs and coached for 4, hardly a hack, although I admit to not knowing everything. I believe I know who fanotgame is also, he is knowledgeable of the game and is no hack either, and has never resorted to name calling or negative posting on these blogs, and should not be called a hack by an unidentified poster. Were you at the game? What was your take on the abundance of soft penalties? Is it possiblr taht trhe game never got chippy because of all the penalties, sure it is, however if you have ever reffed a game, you know you should look outfor those indications and adjust accordingly, i saw none of those indications.

  126. Hockey Mom

Al Bundy – WP does not have a JV team and although they are a big school….not a huge population of hockey players.

Congrats to Nyack/TZ, love to see the underdogs win!

Everyone else who is saying the Rye/WP game was even/close…what were you watching? Saw the first two periods and WP dominated and had the puck most times. As some have already stated…a lot of (bogus)calls. Rye could do nothing until WP had THREE penalties called in the second period and were down 2 for a 1:30. That is when RYE finally scored, one on each 5 on 3. Did not see the third period….maybe they picked it up. Have to say though, hats off to the Rye goalie who was totally on and had an amazing glove save!

Good Luck tonight Tigers, GO WHITE PLAINS!

  127. Al Bundy

Hockey Mom…I agree and White Plains does a great job with their program. I am aware that they have no JV, I believe another poster stated that, and they consistently have one of the better modified teams in the section.

  128. Hockey Mom

Thanks for the compliment Al, I see…it was a post “to Al Bundy.”

  129. My Hockey Team

Do your job and Al Bundy – stats are up, not updated but they are there. New provider, no longer Maxpreps

  130. icehole

    My favorite subject – Refs

It is a matter of managing the game. Don’t look for calls,
let them come to you. It will be obvious what needs to be called. COMMUNICATE – with coaches and players before the game and during the game.Be consistent. Be in position, especially at the goalline, its where you make your money. You don’t get paid to call penalties—you get paid to enforce the rules. It is not easy to be a good ref—let them know when they do a good job. Not just when you think they did not.

  131. Al Bundy

The new stat site, highschoolsportswhatever..not user friendly at all. That is my $19.50 opinion.

  132. West of the River

    Harold,

Agree with Al Bundy that the new format is difficult to navigate.
Also i noticed many errors in the stats how do you correct these errors.

  133. fanotgame

Hockey mom- glad to see you still supporting your Tigers even after the graduation of your son. I like your WP team this year. Yes, Benincasa’s glove save on McCarrick in the second period was a thing of beauty. But, Rye did have a 2-1 lead in the second. WP evened the score late in the second on a PP goal. The WP Power play (with McCarrick at the point) was pretty impressive. But, my take was the limited 5×5 play was pretty even (I think the 5×5 play resulted in a 1-1 score)and fun to watch. Looking forward to the rematch on the hard, fast ice at Ebersole. Hope its about 15 degrees so we can hear the ice rip under the skates.

  134. Al Bundy

    East of the River…

I was thinking about your school boarders or boundaries comment above and you are so correct.

I could easily say how relatively close Suffern and Nyack are and look at the contrast in programs..but more remarkably look at Clarkstown North and Clarkstown South. Two programs run from one AD’s office…they run practically the same program out of the schools. Size and demographically the schools are similar, but the hockey fortunes of North have had more success in the last 10 years because a relative handful of more skilled hockey talent has lived in the “North” side of Clarkstown.

and BTW congratulations to Nyack/TZ on yesterdays win, very glad to see that. There are some good players on that team…I must admit I think the Nyack program has been a bit neglected the last couple of years, since I always remember Nyack in the 80’s and 90’s, and up to about 6 years ago always having a very respectable program.

  135. iona verse stepinac tonight

    should be a good one

  136. league 4

Ironically enough that 80’s Nyack team was lead by a great man named Kenny Mitchell who is now the new superintendent of Tappan Zee.

  137. HOCKEY MOM

fanotgame….so are you saying you like this years team because you did not like last year’s team. lol lol

We/WP thanks you for the compliment though.

  138. LoHud Hockey

Al, the Clarkstown schools, while in the same school district, each have their own AD and they both do things pretty differently. Just like there’s always a line between where it’s raining and where it isn’t, there’s always a border between school districts that once you step over the line, it’s a whole different world. Even more noticeable than CN & CS, over here in Rockland there’s a little place called the Town of Ramapo. Ramapo has two school districts with three high schools. We have Ramapo Central, which has Suffern High School and East Ramapo which has Spring Valley & Ramapo High Schools. East Ramapo no longer has a team, but up until two years ago they did, and as soon as you crossed College Road from Ramapo Central into East Ramapo, amazingly you go from having a hockey player or two in every home to a complete lack of anyone who owns a pair of skates.

  139. Pelicans Fly Together

Why is Maxpreps not doing high school hockey stats? i also noticed they don’t have a complete schedule up (there’s only 4 or 5 games listed for each team).
Also, #15 quitting, its not positive but it looks like he has

  140. Al Bundy

Good point Lohud on E. Ramapo and Ramapo Central..

and Clarkstown South has had a decent program over the years and always has a good size roster, they actually beat North last year, but CN has been a sectional power usually becuase of just 2-3 very skilled players over that span.

  141. giants hater

Is anybody going to the North Blindbrook? also is anybody going to the Rye Mamaroneck? Im on my way to see North play.

  142. Mamk Fan

    rye wins 5-2
