Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley with Harold Gutmann

Mahopac 2, Rye 1

December
18

Hey everyone this is Josh Thomson. I’m checking in briefly with the score update from late last night you’ve been pining for.

Mahopac did, indeed, top Rye 2-1 at Playland Ice Casino on the strength of two third-period goals. In fact, the game was tied 0-0 entering the third but it was the Garnets that struck first. Paul Mundinger scored with 6:53 left to put Rye ahead 1-0 off an assist from Taka Katsuta.

It didn’t take long for the Indians to tie it. They scored 43 seconds later when Chris Mastrocola (right) hit Joe Gripsin for the equalizer. Mastracola wasn’t done. He netted the winner about four-and-a-half minutes later just after Rye had killed off a Mahopac power play.

I talked to Rye coach Jason Friesen, who provided some details. He said the goal came just as the Garnets tried to get back to even strength. Mastrocola beat a defenseman and unleashed a shot on net. Rye’s Matt Benincasa stopped the first shot, but Mastrocola stuffed in his own rebound to put his club ahead 2-1 with 1:44 to play. The cushion turned out to be enough.

  1. Rye sucks

Better gimme some butter cause Rye just got toasted

Seriously though. Has Rye ever won a game outside of football?

  2. mountie style

    white plains/mamaroneck update?

  3. wp/mamo

    wp/mamo is tied 2-2 after 2 periods

  4. League 2,3,4

Great job by Mahopac..Two wonderfully coached teams coming down to the wire. Its great to see the Maho program doing well again.

Please someone tell me how did Somers who is 1-5 beat them by 4 goals the first game…Was it just 1st game stuff? was everyone there?

  5. Pacster

Pac’s 1st game was 1st game jitters by a lot of young guys. Why is everyone surprised by Pac beating Rye? Pac’s line of Gysek, Perrelle and Mastrocola can match any 1st line in the Section. They alwyays play good D and have a very good junior goalie in Fatone…not a big kid but getting better each game. And they have one of the best coaches in the section you never hear about cause it aint about him, its about his kids.

May not have enough depth but anyone care to see them in the playoffs???

  6. DUBSET

    WP won 4 3

  7. WP

White plains won 4 to 3…. great game

  8. mountie style

congrats white plains. if only the glory could last more then 24 hours

  9. wpv

Where can I find rosters and stats for the varsity hockey season now that it is not on Max Preps?

  10. what could have been

What a league 1 it could have been if CN was still there. Too bad the regular seaon is diminished by placing the finals in West Point and taking home ice advantage out of the picture. Home ice is important to WP as their rink is small, outside, live boards and to Suffern with their great crowds and home calls. Should be a great race, seem Suffern, Pelham and WP are the 3 favorites.

  11. Section 1 Fan

Horray! Mamaroneck has come back down to earth. Again, they have no scorers..Boy do they miss Conner!!!

Do you remember the Blogs from Mamaroneck….....that they were going UNDEFEATED THIS YEAR! How funny! Does anyone know their record in League 1 play?

Guess they had too much fun this past weekend!! I guess they were really flying “HIGH” for this game! LOL

  12. Get Real

Heard there was a fight at the end of the game with 4 players getting suspended. My understnding is that they all got a one game suspension. ALso heard that it the Mamaroneck players that started it but the WPlains players finsished it!

  13. nobody

    stats for wp
    broderick 2g 1 a
    lindh 1g 1a
    mccarick 1g
Fight at the end was completley unnecessay..seemed to me that it was out of frustration from the mamo side
mccarick and alteri both suspended for one game..not sure who got the suspensions for mamo

  14. HOCKEY MOM

Great game WP…love that line of 14, 22, and 23!

  15. sec1 fan

Aren’t fights more than a 1 game suspension? I remember 2 years ago following the Pelham John Jay fight and the Pelham Proctor fight they raised the suspension lengths…

  16. Tiger Fan

Of course Mamaroneck got frustrated! We have finally figured out that we are not that good and teams aren’t going to lay down and give up! You win as a team and on this team we have nothing but individuals who only care about themselves! And that’s why we’re falling short.

But don’t worry, when we get back our suspended players, things will change!

You had one star last year with Connor. He was a leader! We followed his lead. He motivated us! This year we have players who can’t back up their big mouths!

  17. inmates running the prison

So Mamaroneck has two major issues on the road on Saturday. Then today they are involved in a fight? Wow whats going on there on and off the ice? Is that a “small mistake” too? Can not get much worse in the jungle I guess. Lets see how the school views the last six days

  18. embarrassing

Pretty embarrassing for the Tigers. Whats next?

  19. Coach Problem?

Perhaps the Coach has lost control of the team! There’s definitely a big problem here! Especially when the coach was quoted in the paper that the kids made a small mistake!

Is he kidding….. A SMALL MISTAKE! give me a break!

  20. wpv

the players are suspended for a game misconduct not fighting

  21. sec1 fan

    Oh okay

  22. hockeyfan123

i’m pretty sure that hagan was one of the players suspended on mamaroneck for the mamo/wp brawl, but i don’t know who the other is. great game tonight. hopefully wp can take care of suffern tomorrow night as well.

  23. fights

they are an automatic 4 game suspension
the second time you fight is expulsion from the league

  24. Smell the Coffee

    Hey embarrassing,

Why do you think that this lost was embarrassing for Mamaroneck. They way I see it, White Plains was suppose to win. If I’m not mistaken, White plains killed Rye AND Rye beat Mamaroneck! Therefore, White Plains was suppose to win! So Mamaroneck should not be embarrassed.

But if they are embarassed because of this lost, then they should be prepared to be embarassed alot this year because they are not that good.

Pelham, Sufffern and White Plains are alot better than Mamaroneck. When they beat someone good then maybe they can talk. But at this moment, it looks like a LONG season for Mamaroneck!

  25. no fault

Yes, fighting is an automatic 4 game suspension in the league. Will MK and WP players get to skirt these rules?

  26. Suffern1

Rye beating Mamo was a big upset. That was not the case tonight White Plains flat out beat Mamo tonight. They out worked and hustled Mamo from my point of view. Someone said it earlier, but it does appear that they are lacking a leader.

Get the other players back? I’m sorry, but most Coaches would not allow those kids to ever wear their teams jersey again. It’s a matter of principle! No pun intended, but where is the principle of the school on this matter? You send a bad message to the rest of the team and future team members. Not only is he coaching hockey players, but he is teaching young men about integrity and character. Sorry, but allowing them back falls far short of both!

  27. embarrassing

    To smell the coffee,

forget the outcome of the game. The score is secondary. Its the conduct of the team that is embarrassing. They lost, big deal.
Its as if the team did not have enough conduct issues last weekend they get in a fight the very next game on the ice? What will they do next? I still think they have the most talent and the best team but right now they seem to be spinning out of control.

  28. nyr

This hockey season is very interesting already…

  29. Section 1 Fan

    Suffern1,

I disagree with you about the Rye game. I think Rye had a better team.

But I definitely agree with you about how the school should suspend those players from this past weekend. I know if it was my son, I wouldn’t worry about the school suspending him, I would pull him from the team and then ask the school who was suppose to supervise these kids. The kids have to held accountable but so does the COACH and the Mamaroneck administration!

  30. what could have been

Maybe there is more to what we know with the Mamaroneck situation. I wonder who the 4 were and why the coach would downplay it, perhaps there is even more to the story.

  31. tony

I did not see a fight alot of pushing and shoving thought the refs got in quick but all 5 players were locked up…anyone know if Queensbury is still coming down?

  32. Rye what are you thinking

Mahopac is one of the weakest teem in the league ( mahopac G Bobby Fatone very very good only in 10th grade)
So how did they bet Rye.
Don’t play to win- Rye instead of playing there top players and spanking a team they could.
What is the rye coach thinking he plays his mini mites-instead (these kids are small really small), mixes them with the older better players these little mini mites are non players mahopac just pushed them out of the way . So the real hockey players get pissed off and lose there mojo. and the coach keeps sending out all the 9 and 10th graders makes no sense .
Mahopac you deserved to win good for you.

  33. Section 1 Fan

Hey Rye what are you thinking,

Maybe the coach thinks this is a rebuilding year, If he has alot of good 9th and 10th grade players then maybe he feels that if he plays them enough they could contribute in the playoff run at year end. Also, next year these players will be 11th and 10th graders and Rye could be the team to beat in 2009-10! Especially with Pelham,Suffern,Clarkstown North and Mamaroneck getting killed by graduations!

  34. hey section 1 fan...

if rye had a better team and suffern crushed rye 8-0 then you’re saying that suffern will crush mamo also? if rye is better then mamo then mamo will lose to suffern 10-0, according to section 1 fan…oh and usually when a team is better they don’t get outshot 38-16.

  35. oh and..

also section 1 fan, since mahopac beat rye i guess mahopac will beat mamo too! give me a break, everyone knows Rye lucked out against mamo…glaser handed rye that game on a silver platter by letting in those goals. Benicasa played great and gave rye a chance to win

  36. next year

suffern will not be killed by graduations. they lose big players every year then the next year someone steps up to fill there spot. look at them this year.

  37. Goal

Rye will bounce back from losses to Suffern, WP, and Mahopac. Look for wins the second time around

  38. wpv

WP has many younger players playing.
The highest scoring line is a freshman, sophmore and junior combination.
If Rye’s upperclassmen players are “losing their mojo” because they are not playing while younger teammates are playing then they are missing the point of Varsity hockey…the best players play/Play to win.

  39. Rye what are you thinking

Play your best players put some points on the board then teach hockey 101 when it all clear every one knows that
