Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley with Harold Gutmann

White Plains beats the champs

December
19

Hey all, this is Jake Thomases. Harold is still on vacation but he gave me his password so I could post on today’s White Plains-Mamaroneck game. He’ll be back to start next week.

Unfortunately for him he missed one of the most compelling games of the early season. White Plains beat Mamaroneck 4-3 at Ebersole in a game first marked by resilience, then marred by a fight.

White Plains scored twice in the last minute of the first period. Steve McCarrick had a stuff and Dan Broderick a 2-on-1 break. But Mamaroneck climbed back in the second period on goals by Adam Zweig and Joe Naclerio. Naclerio was actually sliding headfirst into the net on his stomach when he jabbed the puck in for a 2-2 tie.

It looked like the defending champ had taken the challenger’s best punches and lived, and was about to take the game. But White Plains again struck with two quick ones. Jeremy Lindh scored with 9:55 left, and Broderick got one with 8:28 left. That insurance goal allowed White Plains to survive Robby Fine’s goal that made it 4-3 with 6:55 to go.

As the final seconds ticked off and some White Plains players started congratulating each other, a few started shoving. The refs stepped in but it only got worse. Scuffles broke out in several spots. Soon punches were being thrown. One Mamaroneck player was repeatedly throwing his fist at someone. Somehow he ended up not getting penalized.

The fight was disjointed enough that it never became an all-out brawl. Eventually the refs put out all the fires and spent several minutes sorting out what had happened. They still made everyone line up for handshakes.

Once the players were in their respective locker rooms the final ruling came down. Four players—two from each side—were given game misconduct penalties. That comes with an automatic one-game suspension. McCarrick and Matt Altieri will sit for White Plains. Sean Hagan and Christian Glaser will sit for Mamaroneck. All four are important players.

As most of you know, Mamaroneck is already short-handed because of the two incidents upstate that resulted in four suspensions of undetermined length.

  1. mountie style

no discipline for chaps boys anymore. i dont know what happened. everything was falling their way

  2. Sam K

I saw more shoving then fighting, maybe the JN guys were at a different angle. I think it was more out of frustration then anger. From what I understand if there is a fight the penalty is more severe, each just got one game. Anyone want to jump in, or know the right rules?

  3. Here we go again

Maybe Suffern is a lot better than most of you thought and maybe BIG BAD MAMO isn’t as good as all of you Mamo fans thought.
So shut up and play and try winning some games before you start talking about how you are winning the section again NOT!!!!!

  4. mimi

    friday, 12/19

    iona/fordham closed = no iona/fordham game 5:15 at playland

  5. more cover ups

theres much stuff swept under the carpet at Mamaroneck the carpet is bulging

  6. simple

Fight rule is simple.. its an automatic 4 game suspension. Most likely Chap intervened before the final and the penalties were changed to simple misconducts.

  7. Please

For every person hyping up mamo this year during the offseason there was another suffern person saying suffern was underrated and were better than mamo. Stop trying to pretend Suffern is some big underdog. People thought mamo might have an edge because they lost less than suffern, but nobody assumed they would have an easy section win this year. Get over yourself, cause you suffern guys are apparently the #1 team again. Happy?

  8. Mamroneck

Whats going on over at Mamaroneck? They have become a difficult group and are out of control. I watched the game and at the end there was fighting. I have heard the phase 1 punch constitutes a fight if thats true there should be a total of 8 4 game fighting suspensions. Mamaroneck should get 6 White Plains 2

  9. Suffern1

Mamo/Pelham/White Plains & Suffern are all pretty even. It’s going to come down to who is playing the best hockey at the end of the season. I expect all four teams to have a couple of losses along the way. If you have seen all four teams play and know a little about hockey you will take off your bias(kids team/school team) glasses you can only come to the same conclusion.

  10. suffern

I said it before and I will say it again, Mamaroneck = OVERRATED!!! They are really not that good, yes, they do have a lot of depth but all that means is they have a lot of just OK players. Nobody (other the Glaser, goalie) is really very good at all (and Glaser seems to be struggling). For them to win the section this year would be a huge accomplishment. I have not seen WP play yet this year but it is going to come down to 4 teams pelham, WP, CN and Suffern. There are a lot of kids on suffern with a lot to prove, and are still upset about losing last year. There was no question that suffern was the best team in the state last year, but that doesn’t mean anything, it doesn’t matter who the best team is, just who wins the game. I know the suffern players would love to show last years seniors and everyone else what they can do this year. I hope the game against WP isn’t cancelled tonight, it will be good.

  11. Al Bundy

Looks like White Plains belongs in league 1.

I thought that they lost to much and that last year was there time. This is good that league 1 now has more quality teams.

With White Plains being one of the few league 1 teams that Clarkstown North plays, and perhaps the best one they’ll play, this becomes a more important measuring game for CN.

  12. Al Bundy

and don’t discount Mamaroneck. They are obviously going through a rough patch. Maybe this brings them back to reality a bit. But later in the season who is going to want to play a righted and motivated Mamaroneck.

Looks like a great league 1 season again..

  13. suffern does

Hey AL, there isn’t anybody suffern wants to play more! Better get your act together before Jan. 10th

  14. east of the river

I think we have all seen many games in the past two seasons where one punch = four games. I have personally seen two suspensions handed out for a single, frustrated punch thrown with no other retaliation and the player was suspended for the next 4 games. Last nights game sounds like enough punches were thrown. So why only a game misconduct? I thought the section had a no tolerance rule. Different rules in League One perhaps? Or maybe Coach Chap intervened with the authorities. Wouldn’t surprise me. Can’t let the “power teams” be put at a disadvantage I guess.

  15. CN

the WP win over Mamo just shows how weak these teams are. CN won the White Plains tournament by a land slide. The two top teams are clearly CN and Suffern.

  16. Here we go again

Maybe the whole section is weak from L4 to L1,and this is why Rye beat Mamo,Mahopac beat Rye,WP beat Mamo.Looks like a big down yr foe the section with not much in sight.

  17. red light

I saw no huge brawl!! I saw shoving and pushing but punches? Is the guy covering for harold know hockey? How can he say a huge brawl? Give me a break.

  18. Keep dodging the facts

Keep spinning it Mamaroneck. Heres the key point here, under the current set of circumstances Mamaroneck should have been on their absolute best behavior last night. They werent. Keep this in mind over the weekend you had a police shoplifting incident, then that night pot smoking incident? Obviously the players do not fear the teams administration to take those liberties. Now after all that, the negative publicity and dragging the school and teams name down they get into it on the ice last night? When does someone put their foot down?

  19. loser

Hey Jake, you obviosly don’t know much about hockey. Although I wasn’t there, this sounds like it was a great game. And you decided to spend half of your time reporting a bunch of pushing and shoving. Another great job by the JN staff!! all you care about is starting trouble, next time report a little bit more about the game and not the BS that happens in almost every hockey game. Hockey is a very rough sport played by kids with loads of testosterone, maybe they should have you covering the chess team.

  20. LoHud Hockey

The Suffern/WP game and the PR/FL games for tonight at SOR have been postponed. No reschedule dates as of yet.

  21. who is the loser here?

Don t shoot the messenger pal, stop the cover up. Facts are facts, Mamaroneck is completely out of control from top to bottom and ignoring it is the wrong thing to do in high school sports. The reporters cannot ignore this stuff you just don rt like it because its your team thats involved. You were loving the Sufffern stuff last year though

  22. Love

What I loved was Mamaroneck 2….Suffern 1 to win the 2008 Section 1 Championship.

  23. Mamk WP

I was at the game however Mamo’s Hagan did nothing, should not have got a suspension. he went in to pull glaser out of the fight and WP players thought he was joining and jupmed him. sarcastically glaser looked like he was having fun ha and the WP players were just going crazy over him.

  24. ??

THERE IS A LOOOONNNNGGG WAY TO GO IN THIS SEASON IT SEEMS NONE OF THE TEAMS ARE AS STRONG AS THEY WOULD HAVE HOPED THERE ARE GOALIES THAT HAVENT SEEN TOO MANY SHOTS AT ALL THERE ARE ALSO OFFENSIVE PLAYERS THAT SHOULD BE SCORING THAT ARENT LETS SEE WHAT HAPPENS ITS EITHER GONNA BE A BIG SHOCK OR A BIG SURPRISE

  25. Nice

Here’s the link to the article of the MAMK/WP game. Looks like in the picture, Zweig gave a nice punch haha.

  26. Little uncomfortable

Its getting a little uncomfortable in here? Too bad, the bloggers are not responsible for this. The bloggers are only discussing facts of what has happened if you cannot face the truth or deal with its consequences do not do the crime. Or stay off the blog. You do not have to come here and read it if you cannot handle it

  27. tiger fan

    My two cents…

I was at the WP/Mamo game last night. It was a great game…one of the best one’s in the section so far in this young season. As for the fight…there wasn’t a fight. WP came off the bench to celebrate and a few Mamo players were frustrated losing. Tempers flared, nothing that resembled a “brawl” took place. In fact, there were a few punches thrown by #22 on Mamo…but he didn’t even get a penalty. Fact is, the refereeing was horrible for both teams. Neither team deserved game misconducts…that was rediculous.

For the people who are bashing Mamo and their coach, he is a quality coach and individual. If you actually knew him, you’d know that. In addition, instead of saying Mamo isn’t that good, well maybe they are that good, and perhaps WP is better than anyone thought.

  28. Taylor

It doesn’t get any easier for Mama, they have Pelham on
Tuesday. This is really surprising though. I thought they would come out and take it to White Plains all game.

White Plains is good people. This is an upset but if you’ve seen White Plains you know its not that big of an upset.

  29. red light

so tiger fan the white plains player that had mamaroneck player by his cage should have not gotten anything? I thought the officials were not that bad.

  30. League 2,3,4

You know what one of the big problems here is that people have to watch out for….....Now any team playing Mamo, can just say “lets try to bait them into something” because there is no way you can come out looking bad.

  31. hockey

This is what ive been telling my hockey friends all along. Everyone assumed that as soon as WP lost Sigona and Rui that their organization would fall through the toilet.
WP is defiantly one of the best teams in the section with a great chance at clinching the championship if they continue improving.
i just hope my team is ready for them when we play

  32. old time hockey

Lohud Hockey, Are you positive the WP-Suffern game and the Pearl River-FL game are cancelled tonight because i heard it wasn’t definite yet?

  33. Time will tell

Let’s see how WP does against Pelham and Suffern before your crown them section champ.

  34. east of the river

Isn’t it a general rule for all schools that if school is cancelled then all after school activities / sports must also be cancelled?

  35. League 2,3,4

Anyone who think WP is light on talent forget about it. First off Alteri and McCarrick would have been on anyone elses first line last year, second this kid Broderick was a little young last year, and the kid McGee plays on the same travel team as Pesce and Hagen(ETB). The Coach HR is good. There is still only one puck and last year Rui had it 75% of the time…By the way where is he? I heard he got called up to the USHL but I haven’t seen him in the stats, anyone know? Also does anyone know if Sigoma is playing anywhere?

  36. Charlie Everywhere

I would remind the appropriately named “loser” that loads of testosterone don’t make you a man. Those players who play this “rough sport” every day without freaking out and throwing a tantrum are the real tough guys, not the punks who start fights at the end of a losing effort.

  37. Al Bundy

White Plains has had very good modified programs the last 3 years, including at least 1 defeat of a good Suffern modified team and a CN team containing this years CN Juniors (not Willows or Shuman, now seniors). Modified success does not always translate into Varsity success, but it is a good sign of the future.

  38. League 2,3,4

WP always has had great mod teams, they are one of the schools that if they all stayed would be as good as anyone, I remember Squires beating alot of mod teams by himself when he was their.

  39. Here we go again

I would say the Mamo coach needs to take a hit for what has gone on,seems he is getting off free and clear,he should take responsability for his teams actions.
This whole thing about it not being a fight(bull) the rule is 1 punch, you fought, simple as that.
So They should just let everybody slide no matter who thru punches, yeh right. Not a chance.

  40. Pelham

Yeah, But pelham modified had beat White Plains modified pretty bad both times last year. And i think White Plains varsity is the real deal. Pelham only has one line. CN hasnt really played anyone big yet. And Mamo is falling apart

  41. nyr

I’m postive on S/NS vs. Lakeland is cancelled

any thoughts on S/NS vs Yorktown tomorrow night?

  42. Al Bundy

Squires was to talented to stay at WP, or any section 1 public or local private school. I remember his impact freshmen year on varsity, than he left. It’s probably the couple of kids they lose to Iona, Step or Fordham that could’ve helped the WP varsity’s of the past.

  43. League 2,3,4

Of course, I didn’t expect squires to stay. I just remember Suffern being dominant at the mod level this year, and Squires lighting them up. I was referring to those others. I think King was a WP kid right? He is 3rd on the D. 2 club BC team in scoring in the same league where other HS stars from last year are struggling to get playing time at all.

  44. That Guy

Coaches are responsible for their players actions . . .

As for best team WP, Mamo, North, and Suffern are all Division I teams (big schools)Pelham, on the other hand, is a small school (Div II)playing mostly Div I big schools and is always in the top 2 or 3. My vote is Pelham

  45. Daja Vu all over again

WP had a nice win over a depleted/troubled team. Don’t go pounding the blogs of greatness like last year. I know, Suffern and Mamaroneck were lucky to beat you last year, but wait a while. You catch a break weather wise not having to play Suffern shorthanded tonite.

  46. LoHud Hockey

    old time hockey-

Yes, 100% sure the two SOR games (FL/PR & Suffern/WP) have been called off.

  47. what could have been

As I remember Pelham already beat WP in WP.

  48. Al Bundy

Can we presume that all Brewster Ice Arena games are canceled for today?

  49. sec1fan

Local HS hockey would not have challenged Squires. He did what he had to in order to get to NCAA D1 hockey. He may even bring it to the next level.

Not to bad, playing in the CCHA and having an impact in his first collegiate year. The best player to come out of white plains in recent memory.

Just so there are no feathers ruffled, there maybe some players that equal Squires’ accomplishments at some point in the future.

  50. mamk

i think the best team with a shot to win the section is CN and then followed shortly by suffern, then Wp, then mamk…mamk however cud get there act together and start playing like defending champs and stop being little babies and someone is going to need to step up on offense. Connor isnt here to save the day anymore guys. btw i think section 1 is pretty weak this year. I’ve noticed people saying that section 1 was much better in the past and its showing considering suffern one of our top teams in suffern got 4-0 and im not trash talking them bc i think any other team would have gotten it worst from west genny. looks like not state titles this year for section 1 unless theres a major turn around for all the teams and start playing better hockey. regionals is against massena, so for whoever wins the section must travel to section 10 and believe me it won’t be an easy game like it was for CN 2 years ago. hope things improve for mamk and so far i love the parity in league 1. Makes everything more interesting because any1 could win on any day. unlike last year.

  51. Suffern Dad

As per Suffern coach, Suffern/WP game is rescheduled for Tuesday 12/23 at sporto at a time to be determined. There is a chance that Suffern will have to use their varsity and modified practice slots (which are back to back on Tuesday afternoons)to play the game, unless they can get a prime time slot from sportorama. 7PM Friday night game as compared to a mid to late afternoon game on a Tuesday. That is unfortunate for the fans and the teams but what can you do? Does WP play before Tuesday? This way their suspended players will miss that game and be available for the Tuesday game versus Suffern? Lucky break for them, but we would rather play them at full strength anyway.

  52. Suffern Dad

Actually, I just checked and see that WP plays Mahopac on Sunday (4:30pm at Brewster)so that is the game where they will be missing their two players (unless that game also gets postponed due to the 2nd storm that may hit us).

  53. sec1

if Pelham modified was so dominant. Why havnt any of those freshman stepped up yet.

  54. Thoughts

I’m kind of glad that WP/Suffern was cancelled tonight. I would like to see these two teams face off with full squads, and if they faced off tonight, WP would be missing 2 of their best players due to the game misconducts.

LoHud – thanks again for the Section 1 link.

  55. A&J

Wow, WP really caught a bad break tonight. Suffern’s stud defenseman, Tyler Calandra, was going to miss tonights game due to a busted chin. Now, when the game is rescheduled he will be cleared to play and all hell will break loose. Watch out!

  56. A&J

Thoughts, as previously stated Suffern was also missing one of their key players in Tyler Calandra so it wasn’t just WP who would have been shorthanded tonight.

  57. Suffern1

What is the rooming policy for other section one teams when they travel? Suffern has to have a parent in the room with
their kid. I would assume this is the same for the schools as well.

  58. Scarsdale Fan

    Suffern1

This is not a universal rule. Scarsdale allows 2 kids to share a room. All the rooms are monitored by the coaches, not the parents.

  59. Coach

Everyone does it different, 2 years ago I went on a trip in which only one parent came. We did things as a whole group some of the time, and we did somethings in 3’s. Everyone had my cell phone. The captains would check in every 3 hours just to say hello, everything fine, ok. Before we went we had the no drinking or smoking talk, and signed some papers, etc.

I don’t blame Chaps at all, you can’t treat the kids like 1st graders and have 20 of them line up one behind the other everywhere they go, even if they prove the deserve to be treated like that.

Like him or not Chaps is a future Hall of Fame HS Coach, and deserves the benefit of the doubt on this.

  60. That Guy

to Mamk comment : “looks like not state titles this year for section 1 unless theres a major turn around …”

correct me if I am wrong but Pelham is playing Queensbury on Sunday with the winner most likely to ranked #1 in state.

Also to Sec1 comment ” if Pelham modified was so dominant..”
if I am not mistaked Pelham Modified was undefeated last season beating WP, Suffern and Mamaroneck I would think is would be considered dominant.

  61. HOCKEY MOM

sec1fan….thanks for not ruffling my feathers…lol lol I really do appreciate it!

  62. 13thman

Big upset there… We’ll have to see if Mamo can rebound against Mahopac shorthanded. Then they travel to Pelham, which should be a great game.

I think this loss makes Pelham the league 1 favorite if they can pull out 2 wins over the next couple days against Queensbury and then Mamaroneck.

  63. That Guy

  64. Da Truth

Why play the rest of the season suffern and CN are the only two teams who can play hockey. the rest of the teams in this section are just playing for 3ed

  65. Da Truth

WILLOWS and SHUMAN > HILL and HILLER. simple math

  66. sec1 fan

Pelham’s freshmen make up the entire third line and their third defensive pairing. Their best player last year left and went to Iona Prep.

  67. Suffern1

Does anyone know when Suffern adopted their rooming policy? I have a feeling it was after the 1980 team, 19-0 at the time and most likely State Champs made a little “mistake”.

  68. sec1fan

Hockey Mom, glad you’re laughing. Don’t want my posts to be taken negatively as opposed to informatively. None of them were to argue the possible from the impossible, just the history as I know it. A way of imparting conventional wisdom but certainly no absolutes. I will be more careful in the future tho.

    That Guy

To date Squires has played 16 games and is tied for 5th in scoring on the team with a line of:
    16 games 2 goals 5 assists 7 pts

pretty significant output for first year on a team struggling to win or score.

  69. Suffern1

    13thman

How will Pelham be ranked number 1 in the State? Their not even Number 1 in their section! West Genny will be ranked 1. No disrespect, by Pelham will be lucky to crack the top 10.

  70. That Guy

    To Suffern1:
You do understand there are two Divisions:
    Div I big schools
    Div II small schools

    state rankings just released

    #5 Clarkstown North

    #9 Suffern
    Pelham is #25 in D2
doesn’t seem right that north is ahead of suffern besides the fact they played more games.

    ushsho.com/nyrank is the website

  77. wrong rankings

Nobody considers those computerized rankings. They go by things like how many goals you beat a team by and much of the criteria is not reliable. The rankings that matter are the New York State Sportswriters Poll that probably will not come out till after Christmas. Blow teams out weak or strong and you get a top ranking on the USHshu one

  78. sec1fan

what is the website for the new york state sportswriters?

  79. Suffern1

    13thman

    Pelham is ranked 25th

  80. wrong rankings

Ossining who beat mostly league 3 teams is 9th

  81. Mr. Puck

Pelham should definitely be moving up in the state rankings after the next few games..chicken wings

  82. LoHud Hockey

    Sec1fan-

The sportswriters website is: http://www.newyorksportswriters.org/. They usually don’t have the rankings up until January.

As for the computerized ones, there are a lot of holes in the logic they use to create the rankings, and part of it is who reports their scores to them and who does not. The main issue is that they base the strength of a team on their record and the records of the teams they beat, but if say a league 4 team in Section 1 is 10-1 with their one loss coming to a team at the top of league 2, it makes the league 2 team look much better because they beat a 10-1 team. Meanwhile a 10-1 league 4 team is probably 10-1 because they have 2 games a year against Nyack/TZ, Carmel, Greeley, etc.

  83. sec1fan

    thank you lohud hockey.

  84. simple

so again… there was a fight, punches were thrown and how did guys only get a one game suspension?

  85. Tiger Fan

Chaps definitely should be held accountable for the mess upsate last weekend! But then again, he thought that the kids made a little mistake! What does that tell you about his priorities.

  86. tony

    simple no punches were thrown

  87. Section 1 Fan

Noticed that in the White Plains/Mamaroneck writeup that Jackson wasn’t mentioned in the article or the box score! Did he play in the game?

  88. wptigerhockey

to all those talking about white plains modified hockey, i played for them as a freshman 2 years ago (now play AAA hockey down here in florida), and we were very good. we were the team to beat suffern 6-5, and i think before our modified team beat them, their modified hadn’t lost in about 8 years? shoulda seen the faces on that team when they lost haha..the funny thing also was that we had a goalie that had never ice skated in his life in net…ricky zacariah who is the back up now i believe…anyways, white plains is going to be very good, for the next two years…not to mention, they lost a very good defenseman in connor lawerence who played varsity in 8th grade, and now plays varsity salisbury as a sophomore..oh, and they also lost me! haha =D….anyways, i call it…white plains, 2009 section 1 champs…

  89. 8 years???

Suffern modified hasn’t lost in 8 years??...i think you got your facts a little mixed up bro

  90. wrong rankings

The computerized rankings use total goals as a major factor. So if a league 4 team beats another league 4 team 8-0 that looks better to the computerized rankings then White Plains beating Mamaroneck 4-3. In addition the computerized rankings have no idea of what the difference is between leagues 1 2 3 4 or the upstate strengths and weaknesses since its a national outfit. They have a catergory that says strength of schedule but since they really only go by scores as a basic criteria it is inconsistent too. For example last year they ranked Burke Catholic pretty high. Burke was ok, but certainly not a top 15 in the state. It was based on Burkes scores. There schedule is very average but they did do a lot of scoring so it looked better than it actually was.

  91. different rules this year?

So let me ask again… it was stated in the paper, on the blog and with a photo… punches were thrown… one game suspensions?

  92. to different rules

Many times coaches do the wrong thing. They know their kids are wrong and instead of allowing the natural flow of punishment to run its course the coaches try and many times do talk referees out of appropriate punishment and suspensions. In Mamaronecks case this happens quite often as it happened last year numerous times most notably the fiasco with Whitesboro when a Mamaroneck player made an obscene jesture to the crowd and it went unpunished. It looks as though it has caught up to Mamaroneck and its unfortunate that the team and players have never had to be held responsible for their behavior so it has gotten progressively worse and is probably at the point of no return. The absolute best thing the coach could have done after the White Plains fight was to allow the referees to do their jobs. That way the coach who obviously does not want to confront his outlaws would have been taken out of it as the refs could be the bad guy and the kids would have been disciplined properly. Maybe that would have got the teams attention rather than doing yet another cover up and allowing things to ride

  93. sec1fan

to bad that the white plains modified team 2 years ago brought down players from varsity to play sufferns modified but sufferns modified lost a couple times the year before that when hill and gabriel were on modified

  94. Al Bundy

One important element about the modified team transition to varsity team is….White Plains loses a couple of real good kids to private schools who have played on their mod teams. I also know that this happens to many other teams to.

However, this rarely happens to the Suffern program. At least that I’m aware of. It speaks to the quality and respect the prgram has in the community. Even with Don Bosco Prep less than a mile away from Suffern, this perennial top ten NJ high school hockey program does not get Suffern kids.

sec1fan, wp modified didnt do that, because i was on that team..i would tell you if they did…everyone on that team had never played varsity..all of the suffern parents thought i was on varisty cause i was skaitng all over their kids…i was a freshman and i got moved up to varisty at the end of the season, but that was after that game…and to the other person, i dont know if it was 8 tears that they hadnt lost, that might me wrong…that just what i had been hearing ferom them…

  96. wptigerhockey

sorry about that terrible spelling…*varsity, *skating, *years, *be, ...and also, the suffern coach had told our coach that they hadnt lost in a couple years….so i dont know …

  97. sec1

enough of the modified talk. Pelham modified killed everyteam they played last year anyway

  98. sec1

which included suffern , mmrk, cn and wp

  99. dubsethockey

hey ive watched a couple of the home wp games and they have a top scoring line of Lindh, Broderick, Variano….when they are doing there thing no1 can beat them..but when i saw the stepinac and pelham game they lost they were out of it.

Does anyone know what those players from Mamaroneck got for their punishment. It seems to me, after reading the blog, that most likely they will get a 2-3 suspension. AND the coach would be very happy with such punishment. That way his hockey season can continue.

What puzzles me is the attitude of the coach. I don’t care that he has been coaching for years. He has to be accountable for this mess. And also, the fact that he thought these two sistuations were small mistakes makes me wonder if he knows what he’s doing. If this was my son’s school, because they were representing their school at a tournament, they would of been kicked out of school. So the question of playing hockey for the season would not even be a topic of discussion.

Earlier in the season there was a coach that through a player off the team for conduct reasons. Why a coach would allow any player to represent their team after drug and theft situations just baffles me.

Judging future varsity success by current modified success is a tricky thing. Especially when it centers around teams like Mamk & Suffern. In the case of Mamaroneck, they carry a roughly 20-man roster at Varsity, JV, & Modified. That means that presumably the 41st best player in the district is the best player on the modified team. In the case of Suffern, they have 27 kids on the Varsity, so the 28th best player in the system is the best player on the modified team. So by the time the best player on Pelham’s modified team (who is the 21st best in the district) is a senior captain first line stud, he is going toe-to-toe in a League 1 varsity showdown against seniors in Mamk & Suffern who were not on the modified team when he was there, while the kids he played against in modified are on the 2nd or 3rd lines (or riding the bench).

NOTE: I am only using Pelham’s name in a hypothetical example, feel free to replace the word Pelham with the name of any other team in the section rather than coming down on me for knocking the Pelham program.

  102. wptigerhockey

when i played modified, we never lost to pelham? they were never good..the first year on modified we beat them like 12-0, and 2 years ago we beat them 10-0 and then like 7-4…last year might be a different story, but last year wp modified wasnt that good because all of the really good kids moved up to varsity…anyways, wp hockey= sec1 champs

  103. great post Lohud

Great post lohud. One thing to add. Mamaroneck as an example has two modified teams and a JV. so its much heavier than other programs. Once a player in most schools graduates from modified he is right on the varsity as a first year 9th grader matching up with Mamaronecks junior and senior laden team. The player that the 9th grader played against from Mamaroneck is on Mamaronecks JV at that point. So the teams that play Mamaroneck need to grow up quicker if they want to compete.

  104. Former WP parent

wptigerhockey- I have my doubts about your story. As a parent of a WP 3 year varsity player who just graduated I watched most of the varsity games. Lawrence was brought up 2 years ago mid season as an 8th grader and played last year as a freshman. You said you were brought up at the end of the season 2 years ago, but I’m not aware that anyone was brought up with him 2 years ago or last year. Also, I probably would have heard if we had lost a real good mod player to Florida.

  105. knows pelham

    wptiger hockey

Pelham has had some 8th graders and most if not all of their 9th graders on their varsity. This is’nt a recent development, it’s been this way for years. This effects their modified team. Pelham has 0 interest in winning at the modified level, the just want them prepared to play the same style the varsity does. Remember Pelham is a small school around 800 students.

  106. sec1 fan

Flory, Mamone, Duffy, Clay and Reycraft all were on varsity as 8th graders.

  107. Al Bundy

It’s reaaly not relevant arguing 2 or 3 year old modified results or controversies. Just typically if you have good mod teams you should have good varsity teams down the road. WP, Suffern, Pelham and Mamo all have good mod teams and of course have good varsity teams. I only remarked that 2 years ago that WP had an exceptionally good mod team that I witnessed, but apparently has lost some of those players to Prep, relocation, and perhaps a couple of local private schools.

Suffern rarely loses any of their elementary school kids. Most all of the kids end up playing for Suffern. It’s probably where they’ve wanted to do since lacing up a pair of skates as mites.

Hear in Rockland I’m aware of really good Pearl River, Clarkstown South and North Rockland kids that skate for Don Bosco, St. Joes Montvale, Harvey or attend other private schools. Usually not the case with Suffern.

  108. 800 students?

    Pelham?? Try 581 9-12 grades

  109. sec1 fan

Those numbers are for 3 years of kids. Total enrollment for Pelham is like 780ish…

  110. 581?

    Pelham?? Try about 800 9-12, 581 is 9-11.

  111. sec1 fan

My grade has 190 so i guess its 771

  112. 800

Thats probably 1 grade at new rochelle or white plains.

  113. wptigerhockey

um former white plains parent, i scored 35 goals on modified that year, had plenty of assists, and not to toot my own horn, but was one of the best players on the team, if not the best…apparently you dont follow white plains varsity very well, because i was called up for the playoffs that year…also, lawrence was not called up mid year, because he didnt even play with modified that year…he played varsity the whole year i believe, and maybe one modified game, if even..i moved to Florida maybe a week after the playoffs, when we lost to suffern…i now play AAA hockey for the florida jr. everblades

  114. nobody

    dre i played with u
and i dont think we lost…that was the year wp mod beat suffern
broderick was on that team as well

  115. tony

again I was at the game and there was NO FIGHT. If that was a fight then the nhl would have 50 fights per game! How does pushing and shoving= a fight? What proof do you have that the Mam coach talks refs out of penalties? What is your source?

  116. new duo

u guys are aruging about modified.. are you a joke. no1 other than lawrence got moved up two years ago so stop lying. i would know since i was on the team you clown.

  117. wptigerhockey

at the last game the coach was like, you worked really hard this year and we are moving you up to varsity to play the last 2 games…lol why are we discussing this on lohud haha…all im saying is that white plains is beast and is gonna win sec1…what does that have to do with me moving up to varsity, when the coaches even said that haha..

  118. wptigerhockey

ok edit to that last post lol now that i just asked my mom, she said that they wanted to move me up to varsity, and that i did practice with them, but the playoff games were all like a week after i moved…so nevermind..im pretty sure i practiced with varsity though…maybe even played a game? im not 100% sure though..i know it wasnt a playoff game though

  119. sec1 fan

Shut up. You are in Florida, we are in New York. Get some friends, go out, and stop spending your saturday nights posting on this blogs.

  120. wptigerhockey

bud are you serious lol? youve been talking more than me…stop trying to be an internet tough guy…stop being upset that pelham sucks at hockey and you probably played 4th line on modified, and arent on varsity now..lol

  121. giants hater

I have to agree with CN that Suffern and North are the best 2 teams.

East of River if that’s a rule that is dumb. let’s say that theres a snow storm on a thursday night. let’s say it starts at 10:00 pm it snows all night so school is canceled Friday. lets say the storm ends at noon and the sun comes out the plows clean all roads , condos parking lots the whole place westchester and Rockland are cleaned. games start at 5:00 and 7:15 does that mean just because school is canceled Hockey is canceled?

Suffern1 when the teams travel far the players can stay with who ever the coach says. It’s not like the football team traveling with cheerleaders. let’s say that whiteplains is going up to westgennese and a few of the parents can’t go because of work. those kids can stay in whether it’s the Rw, Lw or defense 2 players can share a room without parents.

If anybody wants my opinion of the rankings
1 Suffern they have 3 shutouts in leauge 1
2 Clarkstown North they havebeen playing a lighter schedule
Mount Pleasant last night Yorktown a few weeks ago Rth 3 satyrdays ago there 0-5 so North is number 2.
3 Pelham for obvious reasons defense.
4 depends on which team shows up the Mamo team that lost to Rye or the team that won last night 7-2. either team them or whiteplains can be no.4
    5 will be the other.
6 is Rye they will rebound from that 8-0 game they will be a 6th place team there very good they just have to play these tough teams.

  122. wptigerhockey

um yeah, if school is canceled that means sports are canceled too..i could be wrong about this, but i know that if there is no school because of like a snow day, there cant be a game…i could be wrong though…

  123. giants hater

Your not wrong the rules are stupid.

  124. Just the facts

The time WP beat suffern it was 2-1 and WP had 12 to 14 freshman while Suffern was mostly 7th graders.
    Nice job.

  125. wptigerhockey

no, definitely not…wp modified had 3 freshmen, along with all 8th and 7th graders who most of them had not played hockey for more than 2 years…on suffern, they had kids with conneticut yankee stickers, and all these other good AAA programs….the score was not 2-1, it was 6-5…i had 2 goals and 2 assists that game, and tyler chicciello scored the game winner with a few mins left…then suffern wanted a face off with like .1 seconds left to try to win it and score because we had iced the puck and they claimed there was still time left, but they lost the face off, and the game =D..nice try though =D maybe your referring to a different year

  126. white plains

    is a joke

  127. Freshmen on Mods

Usually freshmen players on modified teams are not strong skaters. They would not br helpful against a program like Sufferns.

  128. It was a different year

The modified game with WP and Suffern discussed above, was a 3-1 game (en) when Suffern future players of Ojeda, Conklin, Ruthberg, Salt, Shore and Natoli were all 7th graders, and more than half of the WP team was freshman.
