Great to be back

There’s nothing like going from being on the beach to scraping snow off the car, all in one 12-hour span. Sort of an abrupt end to a vacation, but if anything, it got me right back into hockey mode.
I was glad to see that Section 1 improved its profile when Pelham and Mamaroneck went 4-0 upstate, and League 1 showed its depth when Mahopac beat Rye and White Plains beat Mamaroneck. The other leagues are also starting to take shape — the Clarkstown North machine rolls on, New Rochelle and Sleepy Hollow/Irvington look like early favorites, and five teams in the CHSHL will be battling for four playoff spots (right now Fordham Prep is on the outside).
How bad is St. Anthony’s, by the way? According to chshl.net, at this very moment, the Friars have -1 points. That’s pretty bad.
Also, to clean up something from my previous post, Iona Prep had to cancel its game against RCDS because, according to Gaels coach Tim Turnbull, “we got word from our AD that RCDS was no longer on the approved list of teams we could play due to the fact they did not file some paperwork that allows the Catholic schools to play them.” Too bad, it could have been interesting. Iona Prep does have some nice crossovers with John Jay and Monroe-Woodbury coming up.
Also, for those who don’t scroll all the way down the comments, I’m very happy to announce a welcome addition to the local hockey scene. Rockland resident Mike Schoenbach, with the blessing and support of the WRPDIIHL Coaches Association, has developed a great web site: www.section1hockey.com. So far it has standings, schedules, rosters and links, with stats and leaders still to come.
There’s some great hockey coming up today, and hopefully tomorrow if the weather cooperates. As we speak, Rye is about to face off against Section 2 power Queensbury, a potential state quarterfinal preview. Of course I’ll say the same thing about tomorrow’s matchup, when Queensbury comes to Pelham. In Division II, Section 1 travels to Section 2 in the first round of the state tournament this year.
The local game I’m most interested in is North Rockland-E/T/B. Neither team has played much, but right now those two teams seem the most likely to give Clarkstown North a game in League 2. After that game at Sport-O, Pearl River and Clarkstown South meet in a nice county game. Also, Mahopac (coming off a big win) travels down to face a short-handed Mamaroneck team coming off a big loss, Clarkstown North looks to keep it up against Mount Pleasant, and there’s some intriguing non-league games, especially Somers/North Salem-Yorktown.
Unfortunately I’m not covering games this weekend, but I’ll check in later to recap the Saturday action and get ready for Sunday. In the meantime please post updates here and share your thoughts.

If anyone has a Queensbury Rye score post it here.
harold-
what do you think of the whole Mamk situation with what happened upstate, with the unexpected losses and fighting suspensions vs. WP.
Also Harold, when yo answer “My Man’s” question, could you also tell us how long were the suspensions and how did Mamaroneck High School handle this fiasco! The Journal wrote about it the other day but never followed up with the outcome.
queensbury was leading 3-1 after one period.

S/NS-Yorktown predictions?
Hey Harold,
I checked the White Plains schedule. Didn’t see a game scheduled with Iona Prep. Would you know when and where that game is being played?
being from Somers, and bred anti-Yorktown in sports, here’s a biased prediction:
3-2 Somers over Yorktown
Tiger Fan,
According to the Iona Prep web site (http://ionaprep.org/apps/events/show_event.jsp?REC_ID=224327&id=2&rn=1595601), the game is Jan. 3 at 5:15 at Ebersole.
My man,
I just found out what happened and I think it’s best if I talk to some people before I form any conclusions.
Queensbury shot out of a cannon in the first period against Rye at the ice hutch today. Rye looked a little flustered in the first few minutes of the game however, the Garnets were able to score the first goal of the game. The lead didnt last long as Queensbury went into the locker room with a 3-1 lead. Rye mounted a comeback in the second period, they looked much stronger than in the first period and Queensbury needed to step up their play. The third period was the most even period between the two. Queensbury began the period with a 5 on 3 powerplay and scored a quick goal. The score remained 6-4 Queensbury for most of the period until with a few minutes remaining, Rye scored to make the score 6-5. That was the final score with the Spartans emerging victorious. Queensbury is overrated and is beatable. I Think that Pelham will beat them tomorrow at the Ice Hutch by at least 2 goals. (4-2)
Rye/Queeensbury report- Not much of this game was played at even strength as the refs seemed to call a penalty whenever a defender approached an offensive player. Way too close for my liking. The questionable calls were evenly distributed to both teams, though. Rye spent the whole first perod in the penalty box and was on their heels trailng 3-1 after one and then 4-1 as Queensbury scored early in the second on a carryover power play. Rye fought back aided by some beneficial penalty calls. The game winner was scored early in the third when Queensbury was given a 5-3 advantage with two of Rye’s better PK players getting penalties on very questionable calls. Even the Queensbury fans were shaking their heads. The two teams face off again next week in the first round of the Rome, NY tourney. Hopefully, the upstate refs will let the boys play a bit. Good luck to the Pelicans tomorrow. Queensbury has 3 solid forward lines and a good forecheck with D men that hold the blue line well and can put a hard point shot on net. If there is an achilles heel on this upstate power, it inexperience in goal.
fanotgame- I told you goaltending was an issue
NoRock 10 ETB 3. Don’t know who ETB was missing
Queensbury played their #2 goaltender today, Pelham will see #1 tomorrow. The kid today for Queensbury was not too good. What were the shots? I’d guess about 50-20 in favor of Queensbury.
NoRock 11 ETB 3. they got one with 2 secs left
s
11-3 final
sounds like ETB was missing 4or5 players, i know their top scorer was missing
Gulls had a tourny meaning no Hagen and no Mcnamara, but i’m still suprised it was that bad.
Mam-Mahopac score?
Mam-Mahopac score?
Hope Mahopac wins! It’s been so nice that the Mamaroneck Bloggers are NO WHERE TO BE FOUND!
Harold,
When I go to the Iona Website, it has them playing Monroe Woodbury at the Ice Hutch!
01/03/09 Saturday vs *Monroe Woodbury 3:40pm Ice Hutch
I would personally like to comment on the lack of depth of many of the league 2 teams, in particular, North, NoRock and ETB, as evidence by the ETB the game ETB was missing Alex Hagen, as a result were steam rolled (the same thing happened last year when he missed), The same would happen if North was missing Matthew Willows, or NoRock Sean O’Connor, though the previous 2 have solid goal tending to lean back on, though they all have other players, it is clear from today’s result that if anyone of these teams were missing their big guns they would a very difficult time winning (look at North last year, and ETB tonight) I feel league one teams have much more balanced lines, and thus would not be decimated by a loss of their best player.
Mamo 7…Mahopac 2
I guess mamo just had a bad game against Rye because according to everyone Pac is better since they beat rye and Mamk lost to rye BIG turnaround with mamk out 6 players
S/NS-5 Yorktown-3
Somers/North Salem 5 -3 over Yorktown
fanotgame you should be a ref. what does let them play mean? Sounds like they let them play the othernight and everyone is saying it was a brawl.
Just came back from the Somers-Yorktown game. Somers finally came to play tonight. I was impressed by a couple of Yorktown kids early in the game, but by the end it was ridiculous watching them. Their two captains 4 and 8 were skating around searching for a fight. It was pretty comical.
If Yorktown plays like this for the rest of the season, their captains may need to grow up and get used to losing.
Somers/North Salem wins 5-3 over Yorktown.
SNS dominated for most of game, Yorktown didn’t get a shot on net until about 10 minutes in. A few little brawls as teams started to get rowdy midway through second.
Yorktown just looked outworked and did not play like a team, a lot guys just trying to skate in to the net and not shoot or pass, and what passes were attempted failed.
CHSHL Fan,
You’re right. When I clicked on January it sent me to the 2008 schedule. I fixed the post.
zebra- When I say let them play, I mean no touch calls. Yesterday the refs were calling D men for interference when they stepped up on the blue line against a rushing forward who happened to let the puck slip off his stick just before collision. Or hooking when the defender lifted the puck carryer’s stick and took the puck in one move. Or boarding on a hard check ( no head contact) to a puck carrier. I agree a ref needs to call it close if there is chippy or dangerous play (roughing/slashing/elbowing/head contact/check from behind). There was none of that yesterday. Very, very clean game. Just a lot of hard skating and good defensive plays that were penalized. Believe me, the knowledgeable Queensbury fans were shaking their heads all day on the calls, often when those calls resulted in a Spartan power play.
Tough for Queensbury to come a 5+ hour bus ride and step off and play. They arrived at the rink late and had trouble getting their legs
tough to come right off a 5+ hour bus ride and play. The team arrived at the rink late and got right off onto the ice
well, Rye will play the Spartans next Friday after a 4+ hr bus ride to Rome. I think Queensbury is about 1 hr or so from Rome. Let see how that affects the two teams. How are the Pelicans doing against them today?
2 to 1 Queensbury at the end of 2nd period when I left. The game was getting a little physical at the end of the period
so who you guys think are the best teams in leauge 2?
Etb, Mount Pleasant, Scarsdale, Brewster or Yorktown?
obviosly North and North rockland are the top 2 but im wondering about the other teams whats everybody think of these teams?
Queensbury 3 Pelham 2. Final Score
did scarsdale and mt pleasant play today if so score??
The Scarsdale game was postponed
the game was postponed
? to all….who will play for the 2009 section 1 championship at west point!?!?!?
Many believe CN only has the shuman-willows line; however, this is hardly the case. North’s second line (Kapnick, Vela, Lee) is very capable of scoring which has been seen so far this season. Obviously the 2nd line cant compare to North’s first line, but they can certainly hold their own with any team in the section.
Cannot seriously consider ETB when their best players bail to a travel team game.
trust me i know ETB has no chance of winning anything this year im just wondering who people think is gonna win the section this year
re St. Anthony’s, the -1 is probably due to the team playing a game with an ineligible player (player not on roster submitted prior to season start). can’t think of anything else other than a player jumping off the bench to get involved in a fight/shoving match/etc….i believe that happened in a farrell game a couple of years ago and they had the forfeit the game 1-0 (they were winning handedly) and also have a point deducted in the standings
should be noted that while st. anthony’s is 0-7 in chshl right now, most of their losses have been 1/2 goal games…just a string of bad luck…
Can’t blame players on ETB for attending their travel games or tournaments. If they are that good it is nice of them to lend a hand on the HS level to begin with.
The second line at North has done well against league 2 competition. It remains to be seen if they can perform at this level when the competition gets tougher.
Every one knows Willow, Shuman and McIndoe can perform against any competition.
its so nice of the etb boys to help out their coach and show up for some games. i’m sure it was a great afternoon for them driving 3hrs to valley forge to win 15 to 2 and getting in the car and driving 3hrs back.
45 min to rockland to avenge a beating they got in a game they needed to win the league 3 title last year make more sense to me. seems like the school game should have been a priority.
maybe they made a committment to the gulls to play travel first regardless of the importance of the games or maybe the hockey is just better hockey
