Difference-maker does it again

Sean O’Connor (above) scored the first of his three goals 22 seconds into the game as North Rockland defeated Rye Town/Harrison 3-2. “He’s a difference-maker,” Dworkowitz said of the senior, an ESG vet. “He’ll make a guy a smart coach.”
O’Connor had plenty of help, including some excellent defense from the three-man rotation of Craig Meany (who laid out some great hits), James Eberhardt and Nick D’Amelio. Alex Nestle made 26 saves in the win, while freshman Tyler Ketchabaw, making his first varsity start, made 26 saves for the Titans.
O’Connor first goal was assisted by Michael Meigh and Alex Muir, while the next two came on some beautiful individual moves after Titans senior Adam Urban tied the game at 1-1.
Rye Town/Harrison got within 3-2 with five minutes left when the puck went in off a North Rockland defenseman’s skate, but that’s as close as they got. So North Rockland has a nice win against a League 1 team, while RTH fell to 0-7-1.
There’s two huge games coming up tomorrow, Suffern-White Plains 4:15 at Sport-O and Pelham-Mamaroneck 6:30 at the Ice Hutch. Keep the predictions coming.

did urban get credit for a goal/assist and rth’s second goal?
*on rth’s second goal
rth,
Urban wasn’t even on the ice for that goal.
What a comment by the coach of the titans “That’s the season we’ve had – no bounces,” Rye Town/Harrison co-coach Steve Forzaglia said. Is he missing the point here? He kept this team in League 1 after they lost almost their entire startes (save Urban). He lost most of his scoring and most of his defense. And because of his ego he kept them in league 1, where they have effectively gotten their butts kicked every game, excpet last night, and one tied game. But if he was out there for the kids and thought this through, he would have put them in league 2 where they would be much more competitive. And he says you have to play up to get better – yea to get better you play better teams, but this is a school sport that they want to enjoy and win some games. Put them in the league they belong, not in league 1 because he has an agenda or wants to prove something. When you are 0-7-1, your in the wrong league – face it. When they are 0-17-1, do you think he will admit it? I doubt it. Bad choice coach!!
Great game little Ketch! You deserved and earned that start! Your probably close to as good as Nadasi, and far better than Lauro…so keep up the good work!
WHile the Mamk story should have died out by now, it has been kept alive because of the strong rumor that ALL of the kids will be playing tonight vs. Pelham. This is less than 2 weeks after the fiasco upstate which everyone knows about now. Apparently Mamk has no discipline policy, thus no discipline on the ice or off it.
PR control is very easy if followed: Tell what happened, admit errors, what the punishment handed down was and what will be done (new policy) to minimize chances of it happening again. This eliminates the rumors and speculation.
Suffern wins today 3-1, and Mamaroneck better win tonight, another loss could make this a long season
Tonite’s games:
WP vs. Suffern- Too bad the Tigers are missing so many players. With a full line up and their goalie playing a good game, WP can stay with Suffern. WP’s second line does a lot of damage against other teams’ second lines. Hard to see them doing that against Suffern’s top line tonite. Also, WP relies on a 3 D rotation and one of those D men is out tonite. I think it has the makings of a 7-1 Mountie win. The Ebersole rematch should be a good one, though.
Mamo vs. Pelham- This one will be very tight. It will be interesting to see if the much touted Pelham forward line can break thru against the Tiger D and Glaser. Agree that the Mamo forwards will have a difficult time scoring on the Pelham system. I’m going with a 2-2 tie.
Does anyone know the first round match-ups for the Mamaroneck & Fox Lane Tournaments coming up this weekend/early next week?
RyeTitansFan,
For some, the attraction to being in League 1 is the automatic berth and high seed in the playoffs. That’s why RTH will have to be forced out of League 1, if they ever leave at all. They will never opt out. They would rather go winless and get the 5th seed or something like CN did last year than win 1/3 of their games in League 2 and miss the playoffs.
1st round for the mamaroneck tournament is:
monroe vs rth
mamaroneck vs stepinac? (I’m not sure if its stepinac or another team)

yes Titans should have dropped down for a season
But the coaching is not that strong
As for Mamo vs Pelham comes down to goaltending, Gavin has been steady but not reached full potential, Glaser has been playing poorly which is way out of character for him
I think both play well tonight, one goal game either way
I psyched for the Pelham vs Mamaroneck game. I got 2 FCIAC games too. What a day!
If Mamaroneck wins today with all their players… do they REALLY win?
Did they learn ANYTHING? Besides entitlement?
This win (or loss) will come at a huge cost in these kids lives. They may not get it now, but in the future, maybe when they have their own kids… they will realize that Mamk HS failed them. Failed to teach them a lesson, failed to set boundaries for them. This IS their coaches legacy. Sad.
This will effect every kid in Mamk as they see their peers go virtually unpunished (as far as hockey goes) and the adults intervene and cover up for them.
I guess the Mamk kids didn’t learn a lesson, when kids in high school make a mistake a BIG one at that they are faced with the consequences, they had deal with being suspended from the school for a week, a week suspension and 3 game suspension from the hockey team, and all of the publicity that has generated from it plus im sure the parents of those 4 kids didnt let them off the hook i would be dumbfounded if they arent grounded, so as i state this does anyone really have an argument saying they didn’tlearn a lesson.
In response to above the Mamk hockey players won’t feel entitled after what happned i mean read what i just wrote above the high school did not fail them or set boundaries THEY DID NOT GO UNPUNISHED a one week suspension from school and hockey plus everything that has come from this incident are not light things and as soon as people on this blog realize it every1 will run their mouths. SO MANY people think that every hockey player in section 1 is a perfect model citizen angel and has never done anything wrong,
Im sure Coach Chap as well as the parents of the Mamk team never expected this to happen people think that their kids are good kids until things happen. i highly doubt that those 4 kids on mamk are the only kids in the section that have made a mistake and especailly dealing with drugs and alcohol there are def more than just 2 kids on Mamk that have consumed alcohol and drugs . So everyone stop pretending like those 4 kids are the only kids in this area that have done bad things, they were just retarded enough to make a really stupid decision and get caught for it.
No,
I know you don’t want to hear the following…..But this isn’t a problem that just occurred, it’s been going on for years! Sorry to burst your bubble, but all the players know!
Appears that covering it up hoping it goes away and beating Pelham is at the top of the list
anybody have a score from sport-o suff vs wp
just heard suffern was winning 2-0 no idea what period or how much time left…
If Mamaroneck wins then YES they really do win. Not only do they defeat one of the best teams in the section but they learn a valuable life lesson that the consequences of actions are in proportion to the actions themselves.
Just left the suffern WP game..I have to say I was expecting suffern to be much better then they seemed. Hill and Hiller are definitely good players with scoring capabilities, but they don’t have the swagger of Matt Willows and Jake Shuman. Also I can’t believe the lack of physicality on Suffern’s part. Suffern players were shying away from hits, it looked like squirt hockey. Suffern is certaintly a good team, but they have nothing on CN
Suffern won 3-1
Wow.. 3-1 is actually pathetic. White Plains was missing its 2 best players! Suffern is no power house, the reputation of Suffern being dominant has not been matched by Suffern’s game play.
Its amazing how quickly we all forget. Last year everybody blasted the RTH, the coaches and the players for moving up AND they played well. WP was blasted for not moving up. Why do we get upset that these kids have to meet and rise to a challenge.?
This has nothing to do with the coaches. RTH was not given an option to move down and from what I have heard from them, you are right the coaches would not want to do. Why would they? So they are struggling early in the season. RyeTitansFans you may not be fans of the coaches, and I dont care, but these guys know what they are doing and have guided this team for several years of success. I believe they are missing several of their key players and their top player doesnt do much on the ice anyway.
Will they be forced to move down? Maybe. Should CN be in League 1? Yes? You are clearly an unhappy parent. Or you can listen to what the kids have to say which is that the coaches kept them in league 1 because they think they have a team that can pull it together and league 1. It has nothing to do with a playoff spot, we all said that last year on the blog and they proved us wrong (parents included).
I for one, am rooting for them once again and hope they wrap up a great year. To RyeTitansFan, I dont think teams should quit and go down a league because the season will be tough.. how is that looking out for the kids? Its hard.. so quit.
Can I guess that one of your kids doesnt play a lot or you just dont like Coach Striar. I can tell how you watch out “for the kids” by blaming others. Nice lesson.
WP missing 3 starting players tonight.
RyeTitansFan,
You have to be a parent or player since you know of a goalie that has not suited up yet. Show some faith in this team. It wasnt the wrong the choice to stay in league 1, you just have the wrong attitude. I also would doubt it was Coach Forzaglia on that one and Stryers and doubt he has an agenda to prove anything other than our kids playing hockey.
Any score for Pelham/Mamaroneck?
mamaronecks winning 3-1 after the 2nd period
Wp was missing their entire first line. and i was at the game and white plains was competeing completely missing their two big name players and another scoring threat in klimchuck.
CN
If you were at the game, then you were aware that it was 3-0, before WP got a gift(hit D skate) goal with a little more than a minute to go. Suffern was never threatened in this game. Remember, Suffern is known for solid D and goaltending. WP played good D and did not take any chances. I’m sure the missing WP players hurt them, but we won’t find out until they meet again. I guess your view of good solid hockey is winning by a touchdown or more. Next time your at sporto, take a look at that big banner and ask yourself how Suffern won all those league and sectional championships.
Suffern has always had mostly finesse players, more so than physical, with the exception of a few physical players over the years (Ojeda, Wynne, etc.). However, this year’s Suffern team is probably even more finesse than ever. One or two players is going to have to step up their physical game, especially when they play CN. Getting hit by Matt Willows is like running into a big rock.
White plains 17 saves – 19 saves for suffern.. white plains was clearly favored in shots..
Looks like suffern would have had their hands full if White plains had had their entire staring line
oh well
mamaronecks winning 4-2 with 2 minutes left
If Suffern is as good as everyone is saying they would have been able to dominate a depleted WP team. They play solid d (not really tested), but just that won’t cut it against a team with an explosive offense.
Exactly..I wasn’t criticizing the Suffern program, but how can you say this years team is number 1, they had no explosion on offense, especially when WP was missing key players. Against teams like North with explosive offenses they’re gonna get beat
Very true….Suffern’s m.o. is to get up 3 or 4 goals and lock it down. They don’t need to nor do they care to beat someone 7 or 8 goals. I had to laugh at posts last week about Suffern running up the score. They have a little class unlike some of these teams that feel a need to keep scoring when they are up by 7 or 8 goals. If you look at Suffern’s boxscore and say ooohhh they only beat this team 3-1 they must not be that good…then you haven’t been paying attention the last several years.
CN
7 goals in 7 games – 3 off our own players! The two guys and a goalie show are great, but they still haven’t played a team the teaches defense first and timely scoring second. And tell me how does a team that wins by an average of 7 plus goals per game still manage to give up two or three goals a games?
Who was the 3rd WP player not there? O know Alteri and McCarrick were out, some have said 3 were missing or a whole line was out…...I saw some of the game. It looked like it was a good learning experience for WPs younger players.
mamaroneck won 5-2
goals by
Brett J, C Glaser, Joe Naclerio, Matt M, Adam Zweig
Suffern has 3 good lines. They have alot of depth. But they only play 3 D. What happens if one of them get hurt. Will they only play 2 D. There is no way they can only play 3 D against a team like North.
Suffern will be fine mark my words
The term timely scoring is used for a team that doesn’t have the ability to score consistently. You must be hanging out with mamaroneck players in a hotel room if you think suffern would rather win 3-1 than 7-1. It’s not a matter of being classy.
well said and you hit the nail on the head
inconsistant
i do believe if wp had all their players, it would have been a whole different game
who agrees
I don’t think so
??
WRONG!! 5-0 in league 25 gf 2 ga – My friends that’s CONSISTANCY! Your looking at the our glass as half empty, we view it as half full!
Mamk back on top
If WP had all it’s players, they would have drawn more penalties, Suffern would have had more power plays, and scored more goals. When actually was the last time WP beat Suffern?
Suffern looked flat, did not play a good game. Yet, there was not one instance in that game that I thought White Plains would win.
Anything about the Mamk win?
Mamo/Pelham report- Most impressive Pelham player was their goalie who kept the Pelicans in this one. First period was even in no small part b/c Mamo took a bunch of penalties. The Tigers solved that problem and took control of the game in the second and early part of the third. Without Lambdin playing well, the score could have easily been 3 or 4 goals higher as Mamo had lots of high percentage scoring chances. Tigers moved the puck very well tonite. Mamo had a good plan for dealing with Flory’s line. Neutral zone trap and Hagen and Zweig out against them all the time. If you keep that Pelham line from cycling down low, you can keep Pelham off the scoreboard. Both Pelham goals were on the PP with the Flory line in the Mamo zone for minute or so. Flory line very strong on the puck.
Jackson had like 4 breakaways. Pelham played like crap. Unibrow.
Brett Jackson was impressive in the Mamaroneck win as was Joe Naclerio. Flory had lots of chances for Pelham but no goals. Overall I would say the play was pretty even. One of the Mamo goals was a fluttering shot from the left point that fooled Lamdin as it knuckled toward the goal. The first goal of the game, scored by Mamaroneck was also a shot from the point. Pelham had plenty of scoring chances but they weren’t able to capitalize. A pretty even game. Rumors of Mamaroneck’s demise are greatly exaggerated. Yes they lost to Rye and WP but they outshot Rye by a pretty large margin and WP is very good this year.
Oh yeah a bunch of the Pelham students were wearing fake uni-brows, I guess because Hagan has a uni-brow. So what? Lots of people have uni-brows. The fans looked fairly ridiculous with their uni-brows.
How Prunesti do against Kennedy/Putnam Valley? I heard that kid was great but I left to go see a game in CT. I want to see that kid play and I still haven’t seen Willows or the other Hagen who plays for ETB. Anyone else I should see?
give suffern a break. they did what they had to to win. u cant compare them to any team they haven’t played against yet for the reason of however good a team is suffern usually rises to their level. congrats to suffern on showing they can win a afternoon game. if anyone remembers suffern has been undefeated in regular season home games for 3 years since a weekday afternoon game to fox lane. good luck upstate boys
With a little break in the action for the holidays, here is my top 10 so far:
1. Suffern- 5-0 in league one play when everyone else (other than Pac who has played only 2 league games) has at least 2 league losses. Only loss was to #1 ranked DI team in the state.
2. North- Blowing everyone out. Really a shame they are not in League One, or at least playing top league one teams in their non league matches.
3.Mamo- Back on track after some early season lapses. Can really move the puck, skate well and have a top goalie.
4. Iona- Super skating talent is now backed up by adequate goaltending. That is enough for now. The Jan matches with Suffern and WP will be interesting.
5T. Pelham- Goaltender looks pretty good. Defense always good. Flory line will score.
5T. White Plains- Two solid forward lines, 3 solid D men and a goalie who has played above expectations.
7. Stepinac- Very short bench, not so on talent. They may be a bit up and down because of their roster size (no one can afford to have an off nite), but are hard to beat when they are on.
8. Rye- A young team growing up a bit every game while playing one of the toughest schedules in the state (Suff, WP, Mamo, Pelham, Queensbury 2X each and then Rome Free Academy, Whitesboro and others). May hover around .500, but will be solid come playoff time.
9. Pac- Another young team that will be a tough out come playoff time.
10. Fordham- The talent is there. They need more consistency. A little surprising this senior laden team hasn’t found it yet.

WRT RTH, there is no reason that they shouldn’t be in league 2. Does anybody really think that the kids on that team are having fun getting blown out in nearly every game? The only close games that RTH has played has been against two League 2 teams and one League 1 team that should be in League 2. Why did the coaches makes this decision to keep the team in league?
Final was 6-3 new ro. Whoever asked about Prunesti he only had 1 goal (1st time this season he didnt have atleast 2) and 2 or 3 assists. New Ro started their back-up for this game who played well, and Kennedy’s goalie looked pretty good too. Not Delaverne but still good.
fanotgame,
Iona doesn’t play White Plains.
The league rule is the last place team in the league moves down and the top team in the lower league move up. Yes, the coaches think that RTH has a team that can play and will get better. But its not their choice. We will see at the end of the season. I like that everybody on the blog last year said the same thing and they did well. Or should we just always quit when things get tough.
Fox Lane tournament update:
The matchups I was given by the Fox Lane athletic department yesterday were wrong. Here is the actual schedule:
Monday
John jay-Pawling, 4 p.m.
Fox Lane-Brewster, 6 p.m.
Tuesday
Consolation 4, Championship 6
Nice to see the O get some recognition in the sportswriters’ polls. Not sure if they would sport that kind of record playing a LI schedule with upstate powers like Queensbury, Masenna, RFA, Whitesboro for their non league contests (like Pelham and Rye do). Surprising that Pelham was not in the top 10 as they got off to a hot start and almost tied the top ranked team (Queensbury) last weekend. Rye did the same thing with Queeensbury, but had soft games vs. Suffern and Pac which should keep them off the list.
You know, it’s all well and good when a team is winning and everyone is delighted with the success. But, a true test of a team’s strength and integrity can be seen by looking at how they can pull together when things aren’t so rosy. Those who posted earlier about the RTH coaches’ egos and how selfish they are, clearly have no idea what those 2 coaches actually do/have done for their players on a number of levels year after year. It’s not just the time on the ice…these coaches are there for the players at all hours. And they aren’t just coaching hockey, they are trying to cultivate good values in the boys, too. Like not being quitters. Recognizing the worth of hard work. Respecting themselves and others.
For the record, i would bet that the parents who have been posting these things are pissed off that the team isn’t what it was last year. There is only so much coaches can do. They don’t get out on the ice and play and they can’t magically make players more talented than they really are.
saw the suffern/WP game… all i have to say is suffern be scared of the CN machine .. suffern has nothing in hitting, scoring, power plays, Penalty kill, goaltending…
...
CN has it all
CN is playing in League 2.
The Ability on the Willows Shuman line, plus with Mcindoe in net.. means problems for anytime in the section, has nothing to do with that the fact that there in league 2. Willows was the top scorer in league 2 years ago..the physicality of Willows is going to break teams in the sectionals
...
I agree with you completely = Suffern has nothing in penalty kills especially. They have given up 0 goals in penalty kill that is terrible!!!
Love CN’s bitter jealousy towards Suffern
For years people have been saying things like “I saw Suffern play and they are not that good”. “If it wasn’t for their goalie, they would be nothing”. “When Natoli graduates, they are going to be nothing”. And yet, Suffern keeps finding a way to win. They generally don’t blow teams out and then someone comes on the blog and says Mamo or CN is so much better than Suffern. But deep down, these people are scared of Suffern. They have been on the losing end of games that “they can’t believe we lost” or “we were clearly the better team”. Suffern doesn’t believe they are unbeatable. That makes them more dangerous than last year’s team.
Remember, the highest seed CN can be going into the sectional tournament is the 6th seed! This will make the road to the sectional Championship a lot harder for CN than Mamo,Suffern or the other top 5 from league 1.
i jus cant wait for CN Vs Suffern to shut up all suffern fans and show section 1 that league 2 CN is the real deal
I agree North has a powerful offense but you have to rember 1 thing they have been playing a leauge 2 schedule. They played salem 13-2 they played Yorktown 7-1 they played the worst leauge1 team Rth 9-2 they played south 10-0 then they played Mount Pleasant 13-3. there goalie hasn’t played a full game except that catholic school. up comming games Brewster, Etb the only game that might be close is the North Rockland. Even if North had been playing a leauge 1 schedule they would probably be still be winning games but not by 7-10 goals and Willows wouldn’t be winning every face off.
Suffern has been shuting out leauge 1 teams they beat a very good Rye team they beat John Jay and Whiteplains even if there first line wasn’t present White Plains is very good and Suffern won. If Clarkstown North had played
Maphoac, Mamaroneck, south , Canton, Suffern and Rye what do you think there record would be?
