There’s been a lot of focus on a few negative incidents recently on the blog, but there’s mostly a lot of good coming out of the local hockey scene, especially around this time. For instance, Yorktown recently helped unload and organize 200 boxes so that 40 families who attend the Mount Kisco Child Care Center will receive food, clothing and toys for Christmas. Ossining makes frequent visits and is the official team of a local veterans home where coach Kevin Connolly is an RN. I’m sure many teams do similar things without public recognition.
Here’s another great example of how sports can benefit the community in a positive way, courtesy of a Brewster parent:
On Sunday, December 28th at 2:50 PM Brewster High School Alumni will be gathering to play in their annual alumni game. What is unique about this year’s event is that the players and parents are dedicating the game, and all proceeds from it, to the Christopher C. Caiazzo Memorial Foundation and The Brewster High School Safe Driving Program.
Chris was a classmate of the Brewster High School Class of 2008 who was tragically killed in an automobile accident during his junior year. The accident was attributed to driver inexperience. His parents have worked hard to spread the word and increase awareness for better driving education for teens. They are sending, for the second year in a row, over 50 Brewster High School students to the Skip Barber Driving Program, and are working with others to bring additional driver education programs into the high school. This has become a community effort to do what we can to prevent the same tragedy from happening again.
The Brewster Hockey Alumni are recognizing the Caiazzos for their efforts, and are doing their part to give back to the younger people in the community by donating all proceeds from the game to the Foundation. For more information about the Christopher C. Caiazzo Memorial Foundation visit http://www.christophersfund.com/home
I’ll see Rye Town/Harrison go for its first win against North Rockland tonight at Playland, and I’ll back later with a full report. In tonight’s other Section 1 game, Brewster continues the League 4 part of its schedule with a game against Lakeland/Panas. And Stepinac plays Don Bosco (N.J.), which according to this site, has five Rockland residents on its varsity roster.
Big day tomorrow obviously with two games involving the top four League 1 teams (in the standings), Suffern-White Plains and Pelham-Mamaroneck.

you know, its interesting – i never looked at the rosters of Don Bosco and St.Joe’s Prep (2 prep schools closest to Rockland), until now. now that i have looked at the rosters, i see there are a NUMBER of rockland players on those teams – a few from Pearl River, few from Clarkstown, and even a few from Nanuet. You look at a district like Nanuet, with no high school hockey team, hockey players in that district have no choice but to go to a local prep if they want to keep playing.
and i always knew a lot of kids in pearl river start playing hockey at a young age – they have a good travel/house league program – but i never really understood why they never got out of League 4 – and now it makes sense, they probably lose those few good kids that it would take to make them compete to the local preps every year. this is just me, but if i played travel my whole life from mite level up, and i finally hit 9th grade, i would want to go to my local high school and continue to play with my local friends, instead of playing with a bunch of strangers at a prep. just my take.
In keeping with the holiday spirit….....
All I want for Christmas is a League 4 “preview” to come out before baseball season starts.
As for nicest uniforms:
White Plains, Pelham, Pawling, Rye, Carmel, Iona
And worst uniforms:
Lakeland/Panas, South, Mahopac, Somers away (actually North Salem uniform) and Yorktown
any predictions on the White plains / Suffern game tomorrow
i personally feel it will be tight
sufferns goalies havent seen alot of action so far and it looks like white plains has been putting them in the net with most of the teams that they have played
thoughts anyone..
Missing the two players is going to make it tougher for White Plains to win at Sporto. Gabriel hasn’t seen a lot of shots the last several games, because they have been one sided. Prior to that when he has faced a decent amount of shots he has played very well. I expect a close game, but feel Suffern will pull away late and win 4-1.
Its Lakeland/Panas vs Somers/North Salem tonight not Brewster
as for the uniforms i agree
S/NS should have new ones next year
mamk will take pelham tomorrow…im sure their pretty mad abt the loss to rye and wp and with recent events they will want to make a statement on to a top d1 team. any other predictions?
Suffern 7 White Plains 0
White plains really gets hurt with their missing players! For SUffern, it’s going to be another RYE type game.
Oh Yeah,
Concerning the Mamaroneck/Pelham game. Pelham will win 5 to 2. Mamaroneck has no answer to Pelham’s first line. And also, Mamaroneck is still feeling the pain of thier upstate fiasco!
Suffern will win 7-4 It should be the most exciting game other than the west point section final. I think Hill and Hiller will manhandle White plains.
Since a couple of people don’t like the way Mamo. has been playing I will pick Pelham. I thought what 1 person said was funny Tell Mamaroneck to beat somebody good then we can talk I thought that was funny. Mamaroneck isn’t that good from what I havebeen reading. in the 2006-2007 season Suffern lost 2 games in section 1 last year Suffern went undefeated and Mamaroneck lost 2 games to Suffern If you ask me Mamaroneck isn’t as good as last years Suffern team.
I feel Pelham should be able to win 4-1. With Brian Conner gone Fine, Hagen and there line ups will have trouble this season.
Let’s face it without Alteri and McCarrick WP will have a tough time vs. Suffern.
White Plains can beat Suffern if they play a “war of attrition”. If White Plains focuses primarily on stopping Suffern from scoring, then can capitalize on the few mistakes Suffern makes, they can pull out a win. All WP needs to do is shut down Hill and Hiller basically play defense. Hill and Hiller ain’t good enough to dangle around 5 players that will probably be playing with more heart.
Mamaroneck has lost their “SWAGGER”! So far this year they have been very disappointing! Teams are not afraid of them. They haven’t really beaten a real good team yet this year and have been beaten by OK teams like Rye & White Plains. So I expect Pelham to really punish the Tigers.
White Plains had a big win over Mamaroneck but then again so did Rye. Suffern will have the same results with W.Plains as they did with Rye. Once Suffern goes up by 3+ goals, the W.Plains goalie will fall apart.
as an outsider, sorry, but with White Plain’s top 2 players out, it takes the juice out of this matchup. its ashame, i was looking forward to this matchup at full strength…
Mamaroneck still posesses the most talent and deepest team in this area. Its not even close. The recent losses can be attributed to under achievement. The difference vs. Pelham will be that Mamaroneck knows Pelham will play them close. Therefore Mamaroneck will be at there best for once in a long time.

Suffern over WP 5-1…idk how people are getting these predictions like 7-4. Suffern has let in one goal in four league games, I doubt they will let WP score four times in a game.
white plains hasnt had trouble scoring on anyone else suffern on the other hand only started showing signs of scoring in the last 2 games
we shall see
as much as i agree alteri and mccarick are the top players on wp i have to say that they havnt been prodcing like i thought they would..the line of 22 14 and 23 seems to be the offensive provider for the tiger attack thus far.
although ive also heard that klimchuck(spelling?) is also going to be missing due to the holidays
klimchuck is a new addition to WP and yes he will be out, one of my friends told me due to the up-coming holidays.
i dont see why everyone is doubting WP, before the mamo game the predictions were heavily favored for mamo, i saw ones like 8-1, and WP beat them 4-3!
c’mon people suffern is weaker then they were last yr and they lost to mamo, who in turn lost to WP. I predict a close game.
I’ve heard conflicting start times for tomorrow’s Suffern/WP game. Can anyone confirm the start time?
NoRock 3 RTH 2. Oconnor had a hattrick and urban had a goal for the titans. pretty good game.
Start time is 4:15…WP will be without their entire first line.
A factor in the Mamo-Pelham game you can’t ignore is the crowd at the ice hutch for Pelham… The turnout in terms of Pelham fans is going to be huge for this game, and if we want to, we can be pretty distracting.
I think Pelham runs away with this one. If Flory scores about two goals, we will be going nuts and Mamo will fall apart.
Can somebody be a pal and add Mike Delaverne, Pawling and Marc Glaviano, Carmel to the list on the poll, cause my computer wont let me add anybody. I know nobody is going to vote for them but they still deserve to be mentioned.
Haha, as a pelham supporter, I know that we will bring the NOISE tomorrow night. A certain Mamo player will be feeling the pain. I am SURE that we are gonna get in some kids heads.
3-1 suffern, anyone who thinks suffern/Gabriel will give up 4 goals is crazy!
agree with suffern, just look at the stats. Suffern’s D and Gabriel have let in just one goal in 4 games.
Rocklanders in NJ Private Schools:
To address an earlier post, yes, many rockland students play for NJ local catholic schools Don Bosco and St. Joes. In the past couple of years this has affected the Nyack, Pearl River, Clarkstown North and South programs mostly. In section 1, the addition of 1 or 2 more good players, is also the difference of being in a higher league.
As far as these kids receiving more satisfaction pleying with their local schools and friends, well perhaps, but don’t play the kids. Unfortunately to little effort is made by the local high school coaches to make it attractive to stay and play. I’ll not accuse them of just collecting a check, since they work hard during the season, but, rarely if ever do i see the local high school coaches involved in grade school learn-to-play clinics, or even attend their own schools modified games. The first time you meet your players should not be at their freshmen tryout.
Alternatively, the 2 strongest programs in RC, Suffern and North Rockland, have the 2 coaches most involved with the hockey community and the younger kids.
It’s telling that Don Bosco Prep one of the strongest programs in NJ and within walking distance of Suffern town, has no Suffern residents on its roster. The Suffern kids only want to play for Suffern HS. Instead DBP relies on a steady stream of players from the Clarkstowns, Pearl River, TZ and Nyack districts.
To degree of mistakes,
Mamaroneck has the strongest and most depth ACCORDING TO WHOM? Other than Mamaroneck, NOBODY AGREES WITH YOU! There’s one thing we do all agree with is that the School Administration and COACH have no ETHICS and THAT”S THE TRUTH!
No team in the state let alone the section has the pool of players that Mamaroneck has. A 20+ varsity, a 20+ and 2 modified teams. They cut more players than some programs have.
typo
meant to say 20+ varsity 20+ JV and 2 20+ modified teams.
Give Shelling that deal and they never lose a game
yes Mamaroneck has always had numbers
but no State Titles …
leaves one to question why?
they have had talent too.
Mamaroneck has two talented players (Hagen and Glaser). The other players are OK, no super stars just good players.
Who on that team other than the ones mentioned are the threats to dominate a game. This year in our area, White Plains, Suffern, Clarkstown North, Pelham, Stepinac, Iona Prep ALL have better skaters then Mamaroneck. Mamaroneck lost their scorer and leader AND there’s NO ONE ON THAT TEAM who has stepped up and taken over that role.
ALso, with 60 players in their hockey program for years, DOn’t you think they would be able to come up with more pure skaters then they have? Maybe, the coaching really isn’t tht good!
