Mamaroneck’s balanced attack

December
24

Last year was the Brian Conner show at times, but this year’s Mamaroneck team gets it done with balance — three forward lines and six defensemen who are all solid players. That was certainly the case tonight, as the Tigers’ three lines all scored and everyone contributed in a 5-2 win over Pelham.

Yes, everyone was back from suspensions for the Tigers, and it looked like the team got a much-needed boost. They were beating Pelham to the puck, especially in the second period, when the Tigers forced turnovers in the Pelicans zone and created tons of great scoring chances.

Pelham goalie Gavin Lambdin did his best to keep Pelham in it (it was 1-1 late in the second period), but Brett Jackson finally broke through with 3:16 left, and VC Live star Matt Marr deflected in a slap shot less than two minutes later to put Mamaroneck up 3-1 after two. When it was over, five Tigers had scored, while Pelham’s two goals were by Michael Mamone on the power play.

It’s been a great turnaround for Mamaroneck, who Marr said had hit rock bottom just five days ago in the loss to White Plains.

Meanwhile Suffern continues to roll along and is already two games clear of the field. Another stellar defensive effort (made easier by the fact that White Plains was missing two top forwards after the altercation with Mamaroneck) led to a 3-1 win. Now Suffern is 5-0 in League 1, while the next five teams are separated by just one game — Mamaroneck and White Plains are at 3-2, Pelham is 2-2, Mahopac is 1-1 and Rye is 2-3.

I saw JFK/PV was giving New Ro a good game when I left the Ice Hutch, so I’d be interested to see the final in that one. Other than that there’s no hockey until Friday because of the holiday, but there will still be some new content up in the next few days. I’ll have the rankings up either Wednesday or early Thursday, followed by a look at next week’s big games. Also, I’m currently finishing up a story that should run late this week about a potential change in Section 1 that, if its agreed on, would affect every single team in every single sport (hockey included, obviously). As my holiday present to you, I will break it here first, so definitely stay tuned for that.

Harold, in fairness to some hardworking teams…

do you think you can have the League 4 “mid-season” report (to late for a preview) before your rankings or changes to section 1 sports team article?

  2. Mamaroneck

Showed something last night. Just what was posted by others on the blog Mamaroneck has the most depth. Once past most teams first line there is a dramatic dropoff. Not so in Mamaroneck. I thought Pelham out played them in the first and for for parts of the third period. Pelhams top line totally dominated Mamaroneck but Mamaroneck dominated Pelhams other lines. Glaser was real hot and that made a huge difference. Pelham goalie played well to

  3. to lo hud

New Ro won 6-3 they looked a little sloppy ,but their 2 best players Martinetti and Prunesti looked pretty good they had 3 goals between them including 2 short handed.

  4. throw down

    to – oh my
    is that true statement?

  5. Not Anymore

Used to have respect for the mamaroneck coach. For letting those kids play this season just shows what a dirt bag he really is now.

The Athletic Director and Coach of Mamaroneck should both be fired immediately.

This is truly a sad situation and an indictment of today’s society. Let them get away with anything, as long as they can hit, run, throw, skate, shoot or be a tough guy.

    What a joke.

Chappy, you should be ashamed of yourself. Win at all cost dude.

  6. mountie style

to oh my. i know a lot of kids on the suffern team and i will verify that this is false. this is really sad that u feel the need to start this type of stuff on the blog. if that was the case then i heard the same about top players on everyother league 1 team. see how easily it is to start rumors. cut it out!

  7. SuperStar

Pelham’s crowd was despicable, they were chanting individual attacks towards players, and the a-hole chant. That one kid in the pelham Hockey jacket had some pipes on him and was yelling viscous things the entire time.

  8. Harold Gutmann

    Al,
I’m working on the League 4 report, but I need to talk to all the coaches first, and I’m not able to make calls over the holidays, something that the power rankings and Section 1 story don’t require.

  9. Section 1

    SuperStar,
Be quiet that’s how high school students are these days. You can go to any other game and that’s what happens. Stop singling out one kid all he is a hockey fan. All you are is some hockey dad trying to protect your son who is probably the idiot with the uni-brow.

  10. Al Bundy

Harold, Thanks and thanks for removing some of the made up stories from this blog.

  11. stiefnut

Superstar if your truley a superstar then stfu and deal with it and stop complaining. We can say what we want and the a-hole chant was completly necessary becasuse mamo kids are a bunch of a-holes.

  12. Mamaroneck

laughable about a Mamaroneck parent I imagine complaining about a Pelham fan. There is no worse place for a visiting team than the Hommocks. If I were a Mamaroneck fan or parent I would n t complain about any teenage kids in light of whats gone on there

  13. sec1 fan

If someone has a problem with me feel free to come and discuss it with me. I’m the one “In the hockey jacket with the pipes” And don’t worry, I’m coming to hommocks too.

  14. fights

if you were to ask any player, home or away… they love he crowd; when it is rooting for them or viciously against them
just relax its part of the game

  15. Taylor

I’m not with either team and I can tell you the student sections at high school games threaten to ruin every game I go to. They are constantly trying to 1-up the other teams fans. At a game last night in CT the Darien students were chanting at the Trinity Catholic fans and everything they were saying fell into 2 categories : 1) Rubbing the the Trinity fans noses in the fact that they have more money (earned by their parents of course),”Beachfront property!!, Beachfront property!!” or 2) the Darien students are smarter and have a brighter future, ex “Community College!! Community College!!” or “Ivy League, Ivy League!” (like they’re all going to Ivy League schools, right!). The most ironic was when the Darien kids started chanting “We have class” when they’d done nothing but demonstrate the opposite for the whole game.

Its absolutely obnoxious and its totally out of hand. The taunts are really nasty and they take you attention away from the game. I agree that something should be done about it. Cheer your team. Thats it. If thats not interesting enough then don’t go to the game.

  16. fans

Like it or not fans are part of the game. Nobody is getting hurt out there. Parents mostly complain about unruly student fans, but they love it when its in there favor. Mamaroneck parents were unhappy with Pelhams students fans last night? Watch those same Mamaroneck parents in the Hommocks when Mamaroneck student fans are doing much worse. Those same Mamaroneck parents will not say a word about it because its their kids and they will give them a pass

  17. idiot with the uni-brow

That idiot is an all-state hockey player, and hockey is his SECOND sport. He is also getting a full ride to college and was the Con Ed athlete last week. Sean is a nice kid but i don’t think its a smart move getting somebody that big and that strong angry. You wouldn’t like him when hes angry. He gets one good punch in with his pitching hand and you are not getting up.

I think mamo should stick to hockey and make fun of Flory for missing that goal. The one where he was in the crease, no defender in sight, Glaser forced out of position, and the puck slowly rolling towards him and he just fanned on it. idk just an idea

  18. Goal

sec1 fan- what was up with the unibrows last night?

  19. pelham

Something should be done about chanting? Please, just be quiet you sensitive parents. Sorry your kids are getting chanted at while at the opposing teams rink. Its part of the game and it is seen throughout the section, not just in Pelham. Ask the players, they can handle it without crying on the ice. I’m sure you would have a smile on your face when the student section at your school is chanting about other teams. If you can’t handle the chants don’t go to the games, it’s that simple.

  20. Make fun of Pelham

I would rather make fun of the fact that Pelham has so many little kids on the team

  21. ACHA

I’m back, again not to promote one league or the other. I just want to let people know of some interesting matchups between D. 1 club and NCAA.

On the 27th and 28th, a usual top 5 club team Penn State will participate in the Salem State Tourney. Out of the 3 NCAA D. 3 teams involved. Salem and Bowdoin can usually play with anyone year in and year out, while Salve Regina is getting better each year.

Also anyone know how much it would cost to get the NHL package now, i would like to watch the World Junuior championships?

  22. Rooting only....

One thing that a number of you are forgetting is that there are a good number of young kids at these games. I have trouble explaining to my young kids why the fans are chanting “Bull****, or Ass****, or screaming “You suck”. As condescending as the Darien chants are, atlest they arent profane. I would rather hear Rooting only, but that’s me….Happy Holidays everyone!

  23. sec1 fan

And yes, Pelham was outplayed, Hagan is a excellent hockey player, Mamaroneck showed their depth, our first line had difficulty against Mamo’s first d-pair. We have little kids, they are freshmen, our town is tiny, its only 2.5 square miles.

  24. Smell the Coffee

    SuperStar,

Mamaroneck Fans should not Complain! Have they ever paid attention to their fans? It goes both ways but really doesn’t affect the players….

A few years ago, mys son’s team played against Mamaroneck. As a goalie, my son was abused the entire game. It really upset me that nothing was being done and that No one at the Hommocks tried to calm the students section down.

After beating the Tigers, I spoke to my son about the Students abusive Chanting. Here’s what my son said, which really surprised me…..” Yeah Dad they were loud but wasn’t that Great!”, The more they yelled the more I got into the game. The more I got into the game the more frustrated they got, eventually they realized they couldn’t get the puck by us!”

SO I guess what I’m saying, is expect the students to be loud. Do they need to CURSE! No they DON”T! But unless the rink is able to police themselves then this behavior will continue. Just remember that It doesn’t bother the players so don’t let it bother you.

  25. mamkmamkmamk

we should be laughing at the people who predicted scores like 5-1 pelham and said that mamaroneck wont score on the “pelham system”. there was no pelham system. mamaroneck beat a so-called good team, is everyone happy now?

  26. for mamkmamk

Mamaroneck won. They should win. They should go undefeated. Every year. They have the horses. Every year. So they beat a DII team, wow. Congratulations on that amazing feat. How many state championships do they have? how many Utica final four appearances do they have? How many section 1 titles? oh yeah, 1. As far as Pelham goes I watched the game and thought it was quite even. call it as it is Mamaroneck is the favorite not the under dog in every game the step on the ice in section 1.

  27. wow

Smell the Coffee if i wasnt mistaken sounds like your son might have been Andy Reggev

  28. Smell the Coffee

    wow,

    Nope!

  29. pelican power

also, what a great example of character and morals by the mamk coach for letting the suspended kids play. that really shows where his mindset is

  30. icehole

The situation with chanting isn’t as bad as people think w/players. They usually block it out if they are focused. It usually bothers the opposing fans more.

What would happen if a player went to juniors (A USHL)and there were a few thousand fans chanting? I know most won’t but what if they were at a big tourney?Fans pay to get in and should be able to cheer. Not be obscene, but cheer.
Also do we have another issue like last year where the school monitors off ice cant handle the crowd?(Ebersol) Lets address this issue before something happens.Provide more school security. Its never an issue at Ice Hutch (enough and on top of anything )or Sport-O(tons).

  31. Al Bundy

Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah high school hockey fans!

Some of these mean spirited posts are only temporary, as we all apparently enjoy the same sport way to much.

“We have more in common than what separates us”

  32. Alum

People its High School Hockey! The banter between two student sections is sometimes better than the game itself. It pumps the players up from both schools, it shows school spirit, and when they call out a player individually I see it as a form of flattery. It means you got under their skin, and they don’t want you to succeed. I remember the old days when we played Rye in front of 2500 people and when Rye scored, loaves of Rye bread would be thrown on to the ice, or when the games were one sided and the student section would have newspapers, they would all go up and pretend to read it after a goal as if they were bored… everyone had a good time and never really came to blows…just kids enjoying themselves, let the kids be kids as long as there is no fist-o-cuffs, all is well.

  33. Joe

As per the Pelham’s crowd, the chants weren’t really that bad and the unibrows were kind of funny. I don’t recall them getting on any single player’s case during the game. I’d like to point out that as soon as the kids starting chanting “a-hole” Pelham’s athletic director jumped into the stands to make sure the agitators stopped. The kids are there to have fun. Maybe parents and the people in charge of coordinating the events should take a larger role in controlling the crowds. This is something I have never seen at the Hommocks, but seems to be common at the Ice Hutch.

  34. Pelham/Mamo

was a good game. Pelhams second line seems to have no chemistry, and the third line seemed to more affective. Mamo got 2 lucky bounces: the one in the first was a knuckle puck, and i have never seen a deflection like the one in the second, bouncing off the ice and over a goalies head. Overall i feel that pelhams first line and their goalie hold the team together.

  35. SuperStar

You guys don’t know what your talking about. I have been to countless games at Hommocks and I have never seen any Mamaroneck kid act as unruly as this one kid.
That one kid in the Pelham Hockey Jacket was yelling things about players the entire time. He was ejected at the end of the game for yelling at Sean Hagan. HE NEEDS TO BE PUNISHED. THIS ISN’T AN NHL GAME!

  36. Tiger Pride

anyone doubting that Jackson’s skills is surely mistaken. His performance last night was a top one although not converting two breakaways he fought off cheap shots from Pelham all game while only some were called (dont think people didn’t notice holding and elbows while the refs back was turned)Jackson skated well and moved the puck better than he has all season and showed that when he is in his game mamk is unstoppable(anyone remember in 2006 when Jackson as a sophmore put 2 past superstar Natoli in the last 5 min to help mamk beat suffern 5-4)

  37. Pelicans

SuperStar, you need to grow a pair. Most of what that one fan was chanting was directed at the kids who got caught on the team trip. You’re delusional if you think Mamo fans wouldn’t chant “unruly” things towards Pelham players if they had been the ones who were caught stealing and smoking weed. He screamed towards Hagan at the end about his unibrow. Big deal. I’m sure Hagan doesn’t care if Pelham fans make fun of his unibrow. If he does, he can easily fix the problem and shave it off.

  38. Pelicans

Oh yeah, also you’re saying a fan needs to be punished. How about the three morons who got caught stealing and smoking weed on a teen trip?

  39. Pelicans

    *team trip.

  40. Pelicans

    *team trip

  41. Boce

They did get punished dumbass where have you been

  42. Pelicans

Yeah, NYT understood what I meant. I didn’t make it clear I guess. The kid in the Pelham hockey jacket was kicked out. What more can you expect?

  43. SuperStar

He was only kicked out with 30 seconds left. By the time he was near the door the game was already over. That isn’t a punishment!

  44. Kool-Aid Time gain!

    Tiger Pride,

We have been hearing about Jackson for years! He has a good game once in a while. Usually we find him in the Penalty box….Mamaroneck has played how many games this year and this is the first time we have heard his name mentioned. He’s “NO” Connor!. Connor was a player, dominated and contributed in every game in his Sophmore, Junior and Senior years. I think the last time you heard about Jackson was when he was a sophmore when he put 2 past superstar Natoli in the last 5 min to help mamk beat suffern 5-4). Seems like a LONG time to make a contribution to the team.

  45. mamk

jackson was injured for most of last season and he contributed to the last 2 wins against suffern. i mean hes no connor but hes a good player.

  46. 13thman

Missed about half the game because of a family dinner which I’m pretty upset about, but it was well played by both teams from what I saw (of course when I left it was 1-1).

Hockey fans will be hockey fans. I didn’t think that we were in any way over the top last night, considering it was a big game between two very good schools. The unibrows were a joke, if the kid is going to grow it and call it lucky instead of shaving it off, he should be ready to endure some away crowds targeting him…

Oh and “the kid with the pipes” goes to enough Pelham Hockey games that he might as well be a part of the team. He should be rewarded for his time with the team, and encouraged for having school spirit, especially by you parents. There are far worse things he could be doing with his time, and he doesn’t deserve to be attacked by you for leading chants.

  47. wpclassof07

Listen, anyone complaining about fans cheering and or jeering needs to relax. As one parent said after he asked his kid, it was awesome. Getting yelled at on the ice is great. Rye is one of the best places to play because their fans know how to act. They give you an environment that only adds to the game itself. The parents that think this is for some reason wrong or shouldnt go on are clueless-you think your kids are 11 or 12? Half the kids playing are driving and applying to colleges, most of the stuff that goes on at the games wouldnt compare to how they act among themselves. They’re big boys, they can handle it.

Now, if you have a problem with the cursing i understand, there are little kids there and in high school cursing is a punishable offense; however, kids making chants and livening up the environment should not only be tolerated but encouraged. Did none of you play high school sports? college sports? Relax and live a little, you only do it once.

  48. Yea...no

So i guess chanting assh*** is livening up the environment and should be encouraged?

  49. wpclassof07

guess you missed the part about cursing?, or perhaps the entire post
