Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley with Harold Gutmann

Weekend schedule

December
27

For the second time in a week, Queensbury defeated Rye again, this time by a much lower score of 3-1 last night. At least if they meet again in the state quarterfinals, the Garnets will know what they need to improve. \

Rye and Mahopac are finishing up in the Albany area this afternoon, while the Mamaroneck tournament gets underway in about an hour, with Monroe-Woodbury vs. Rye Town/Harrison, followed by Stepinac-Mamaroneck. There’s also some League 3 games between Pawling-Clarkstown South and Ossining-Fox Lane, while Lakeland/Panas continues a three-games-in-three-nights weekend against Newburgh.

Tomorrow is the conclusion of the Mamaroneck tournament, along with an intriguing Catholic-public game of Iona Prep-John Jay, a good League 2 game with Mount Pleasant-Brewster, and Yorktown plays O’Neil.

I’m off today but I’ll be at Hommocks tomorrow. In the meantime, please post your updates and thoughts on this weekend’s action here.

  1. John Jay

Section 1 will rule tomorrow against Iona! Jay will win 7 to 0!

  2. My Hockey Team

Harold, using the thesaurus these are the words that show up for intriguing:

    fascinating
    interesting
    exciting
    absorbing
    captivating
    stimulating

Why would you say that Iona vs John Jay would be an intiguing Catholic/public game?

John Jay isn’t ranked in your rankings, they are in last place in league 1 and couldn’t beat the team that other bloggers say belongs in league 2.

Iona wins by at least 3

  3. giants hater

My thoughts are here. I would have to assume that Monroe should be able to beat Rye Town Harrison im going to say
Monroe 4-3. Mamaroneck is back to playing the way there suppose to be playing Im going to say Mamaroneck 6 Stepinac
    2.

Clarkstown south is realy bad they ended up in a tie with a leauge 4 team Pearl river. Im going to say that Pawling should be able to beat south 4-2

Ossining Im going to say the team that has 1 loss will win
    4-3.

  4. giants hater

Im going to say ossining should edge Foxlane 4-3 should be a nail biter.

  5. mamk

    lohud hockey,

should be interesting if that happened because i agree it would be more balanced for section 9 with two power leagues and closer games if they really do want to save money.

    Harold,

do you know if the rockland county teams going back to being part of section 9 is even a possiblity?

  6. mamk tourney

any updates on the monroe vs. RTH game?

  7. mamk

    http://highschoolsports.syracuse.com/boysicehockey/

thats the link for the scores of the rome christmas tournament. rye lost again unfortuneately

  8. fiya

monroe won 10ish-0 (not sure about how many goals monroe scored but it was alot)

  9. Stepinac Fan

Have no idea what’s going on at the Hommocks tonite, but if the Tigers take Stepinac lightly, Mamaroneck will get beat!

  10. mamk

wow…does any1 have updates on mamk vs stepinac?

  11. Harold Gutmann

    My Hockey Team,
For the reasons you stated, I wouldn’t use the words “captivating” or “stimulating”. In fact, of all the words on the list, I still like “intriguing” the best. It’s not too strong, but I do think it’s intriguing, or appealing to my curiousity (dictionary.com), when a League 1 public school faces a Catholic school.
Perhaps next time I will write: “In a game that has blowout written all over it…”

  12. Harold Gutmann

    mamk,
From everything I’ve heard, Rockland going back to Section 9 is not a possibility.

  13. rankings

the correct rankings, The New York States Sportswriters it appears went by the computerized rankings, the USHHS? ones. That computerized rankings is flawed as it goes by scores, and not neccessarily by record or strength of schedule. Thats how the rankings were skewed.

  14. Stepinac Fan

Any score yet? Stepinac vs Mamaroneck?

  15. Hockey Fan

    Mamaroneck won 10-1 over Stepinac

  16. mamo

Mamaronecks ten goals: 2 by conner, and 1 by jackson, fine, glaser, christiansen, thompson, nagle, naclerio, and marr. All four of mamo’s lines scored.

  17. fanotgame

Rome report- Rye played DII #1 team Queensbury for the second time in a week. Got off a 5 hr bus ride and quickly fell behind 2 goals. It was 3-0 on a soft one at the first period buzzer. Then proceeded to out shoot, out hit, out play and outscore the Spartans for 2 periods. Lost 3-1. Today vs. host Rome Free Academy they let in a goal in the first 15 seconds and another a minute later. Then collected themselves and got it together only allowing 10 shots in 2-1/2 periods, tying it up before losing in OT. Not great results, but some promising play, Several open nets missed by the Garnets in both games. Rye needs to mature a little more and they will be ready for the playoffs. No games for about 18 days and then 5 in six days including Pelham, Suffern and upstate power Whitesboro. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

  18. ACHA

For those of you who care….

At Salem States D. 3 NCAA Tournament,

    D. 1 Club Penn State lost to Salem State 2-1.

  19. sec1 fan

    fanotgame

What are Rye’s lines and how much does he play them?(Percentage wise)

  20. reality

Mamo did it with Glaser playing only the first 2 periods. And by the end kids who play one shift a season were scoring effortlessly. Four lines of O? I counted variations that amounted to 5 lines. And it’s about time Chiap let them run up the score like CN’s been doing against CRAP teams all season. If Mamo comes up big v. M-W tomorrow night, can we finally draw a big dotted line to distinguish Suffern/CN/Mamo as 1/2/3 and all the rest as a distant sub-class? Mamo loss v. Rye was a fluke. Can happen to most teams once a season. Mamo loss v. WP’s was obviously due to suspensions. And Suffern is way overrated, I’ve seen them three games this year and I just don’t see anything special at all. They should be winning big and just haven’t been doing so. I like Mamo v. CN in the sectional finals.

  21. sec1fan

ACHA, thanks for the update. The result of that matchup can give us a little insight as to where the two levels are in comparison to eachother. Not going to elaborate on what I see from that game result but certainly there are D1 club teams that can handle a D3 schedule.

  22. old time hockey

reality, Suffern will never “look good” because they play defensive hockey and count on opportunistic scoring. Much like the Devils in the NHL. Mamaroneck already has two losses in league play making first place a reach for them this year. This means they’ll most likely play CN in the semifinals or even the quarterfinals if they can’t take care of White Plains again. I do agree that Mamaroneck is at the same level of Suffern and CN, but they most likely won’t be able to play CN in the finals. Not saying Suffern has locked up first place by any means, but a 2 game lead for them is a pretty large margin. The playoff scenario would be pretty wierd right now because if it started tomorrow, Mahopac would either have a bye or play a league 4 team in the first round and then play John Jay in the second round. On the other hand, CN, Mamaroneck and WP would all meet in the quarterfinals and semifinals.

  23. mamk

i don’t think its that impossible. all mamk has to do is beat suffern both times. im not saying it will happen but i think it cud happen jus as likely, but beat suffern at the sport o in league play hasnt happened in years. we will see and the first game should be a good indicator like if we a blow out or if suffern edges mamk then i think suffern will lock up first place. but who knows. im sure it will be a good season regardless

  24. Like we been saying

As was posted last week it is obvious Mamaroneck has the most depth and talent. They always have. Last night was a classic example as they grounded up Stepinac. Mamaroneck just has to hope that they do not under achieve again as they have in the past. Watching the game last night showed what they can do.

  25. reality

old time hockey: good points, but mamo beating Suffern 2x is no impossibility. It’s just what I think should happen if they can play like a team and not a bunch of head cases. I’ve seen Suffern win three times this year and these 1,2 or 3 goal diff’s just don’t look that convincing at all. I don’t see Suffern able to dominate ANY GAME they play this season like they have the past few years with Natoli and the rest of the graduates. Mamo beating them twice is real.

  26. Suffern fans

I agree with you reality but I give the edge to Suffern because they are much more disciplined and focused. I liken them to Pelham and Rye in their approach. They will come onto the ice with a plan and not get bothered by the game and its importance. In the important game although I think Mamaroneck has endless ability I favor Suffern

  27. reality

Suffern and Mamo fans discussing things amicably. I guess it’s the holiday season, but it’s wonderfully refreshing none the less!

Suffern needs to start winning big and convincingly. Until they do, no one is scared of them right now and that’s where they are vulnerable.

  28. fanotgame

Was Step missing players, or did Mamo simply roll?

To Sec 1 Fan- For now, Rye coach has been rolling three evenly constructed lines, never shortening the bench. He truly believes in the three line system and works hard to build it during the season. Has been moving kids around a lot due to injury, illness, suspensions, ect. Everyone is back after new years. Coach has 2 + weeks before the league matches with Pelham and then Suffern. It remains to be seen if he sticks with that 3 even line approach or stacks the lines a bit more, like Suffern and Pelham do. Those 3 Rye lines have been creating lots of scoring chances against good, defensive minded upstate teams (Queesbury 2X and RFA), but not finishing enuf. With a stacked line, you have more finishers skaing together, but then lose defensive strength thru the forwrd lines. Still very early in the season. Lots of time for the coach to fine tune the Garnets.

  29. mimi

penn state showed what they were about

    0-0 after 1
penn state scores first in the 2nd
salem state ties it up with a minute left in the 2nd
heartbreaker finish, salem state scores shorthanded with 5 minutes left to win the game

shots 32-23 salem state (9-8 penn state after 1)

  30. My Hockey Team

    fanotgame,

Step was missing 2 players, one was playing with the flu and two with ankle issues.

It doesn’t matter though. Mamo would have won.

The coach conceded the game when he played the JV goalie in third period. The score was 4 – 0 after two.

Mamo is better than CN. Mamo has more weapons. Mamo is the best team Step has played this season.

Good luck Mamo, play like you did last night and you should win Section 1

  31. Rye Queensbury

I looked at the Rye-Queensbury score report from yesterday and it looks like Bennicasa had a great game. Looks like Queensbury put 45 shots on Rye. Thats two games straight against Queensbury where Rye may have been dominated. At least they were in the game on the scoreboard. 45 is too many shots to allow if you expect to be competitive

  32. mimi

anyone who is at the game, please update on iona-john jay (12pm, ice hutch)

  33. Suffern1

    reality

Last year’s UNDEFEATED team won by an average of 3.75 goals per game. This year’s team has won by an average of 4.0 after seven games. If our offense has fallen off, our defense and goaltending has actually played better! 1 goal per game. 3 of the 7 hit off our Defensive players! Take them out of the equation and your down to 0.57 goals per game. Just some food for thought.

  34. Suffern Dad

reality, Suffern does not need to start winning big. Suffern doesn’t care whether anybody is scared. they just care about winning, and they seem to be doing a pretty good job of it. Whether you win 3-1 or 10-1, the result is the same in terms of standings.

  35. old time hockey

reality, Before last night Mamaroneck wasnt’t winning convincingly and Suffern actually has been. Suffern beat Rye 8-0, John Jay 5-0 and RTH 7-1. Those seem pretty convincing to me. Its not like Mamaroneck is killing every team they play or anything. But anyway, like Suffern Dad said don’t expect Suffern to blow teams out, they play a different style of hockey.

  36. reality

Nobody’s saying Suffern’s not a great team. I know those kids and everybody respects the coaching and the program. But I also saw those 3 games. So please don’t even mention JJ or RTH this year. It’s a waste of blog space for all of us. Neither belongs anywhere near League 1. Agree? Come on, you’ve got to. And both Mamo and Suffern should be beating Rye 8-0. All I’m saying is that Mamo v. Suffern is anybody’s game who wants it and is focused. Wouldn’t miss these two for anything.

  37. Suffern Dad

reality, basically agree with your last post, although I am surprised when Suffern beats anybody 8-0. if mamo and suffern do too much looking ahead, another team will pick them off. at this point, mamo knows they probably have to beat suffern both times unless they get some help along the way. If suffern does win the league title, I will be very interested in watching Mamo/north, assuming WP or someone else doesn’t pick off one or the other.

  38. That Guy

    MiMi,

How have both Iona’s varsity and Junior Varsity done this weekend.

Any Updates on the Ip vs. Jj Game

  39. Todays Game

    IONA 6-1 OVER JOHN JAY

  40. mamk

mamk vs MW looking at the score that north beat them by it shouldnt be too difficult for mamk, but every team trips along the way so it cud have just been a fluke, but i think the score speaks for itself.

I think i wud rather see a w.p vs mamk and CN vs suffern because of the rivalries between these schools. we all know CN vs Suffern would be a killer game and W.P vs mamk would also be great as w.p has already beaten mamk.

As for suffern vs mamk it should be a very interesting game on how they match up against eachother. I do agree with it not being a suffern characteristic to blow teams out bc there not that type of team. Mamk is also a team that has had a well rounded team with good offense and good defense due to their depth. The main thing for mamk would be to stay out of the box. i don’t think people have ever agreed on suffern beating teams very convincingly even last season because they would only beat teams by a goal or two.

  41. mimi

iona’s jv ran a clinic last night in coney island for st. joseph by-the-sea, and it was still one of iona jv’s worst games of the year (unfortunately, they played down to their opponent’s level)...

if you want to see some of the talent (without exaggeration, half the team is varsity ready…good 2 lines, 3/4 D…and the goalie), look out for these matchups that will be grinders (no stepinac, st. peter’s, st. joe’s stuff…)

    thursday, 1/8, farrell, murray’s, 7
tuesday, 1/20, at mamaroneck, hommocks, 8:15
saturday, 1/24, mamaroneck, ice hutch, 3:15
    thursday, 1/29, chaminade, murray’s, 7
    thursday, 2/5, st. anthony’s, murray’s, 7
tuesday, 2/17, danbury immaculate, ice hutch, 4

jv playoffs should be good…looking like chaminade, st. anthony’s, iona, farrell

  42. Taylor

Iona beat Jay 6-1, Wilton HS across the border in CT beat Jay 8-1. Wilton is one of the weaker teams (not the worst though) in the FCIAC. It looks like the FCIAC is a stronger league than Sec1.

  43. mimi

    taylor,
while i do believe that ct hs hockey is stronger in general that ny hs hockey (forgot about preps, boarding, i mean public..), although i don’t know the most about section 1 hockey outside of suffern, mamaroneck, pelham, rye, new ro, the clarkstowns, etc…i can say that john jay, along w/ RTH, are stupidly weak this year…

  44. mimi

the best publics in fairfield county (ridgefield, greenwich, trumbull, darien, new canaan, fairfield) at a minimum are at the suffern/mamaroneck level, and most likely above it…

  45. That Guy

    Mimi,

is it true a player on jv scored all the goals against St.Joes.

    Taylor,

I would agree with that statement. However although Iona might have some of the best skaters around. They are by far not the best team in Sec 1. Also you can never tell who is better then who just by looking at the score of a game. In the past there have been games that show like one team dominated the other, however in reality it was a close game.

  46. mimi

    that guy,

perfect seguay into me stating that the jv probably had its worst game so far this season…i believe mcdermott did most of the scoring (9-0 win)...yes, logolfo (sp?) was missing, but the other talents like riccard, digoia, gino (last n?), little gillespie, little patalano, little murphy, lipsky…all played like they each needed a shot of testosterone (completely played down to their comp.)

  47. mimi

iona-chaminade 6:30 tonight at ice hutch, if anyone has updates, greatly appreciated

  48. That Guy

iona doesnt have a game against chaminade tonight

  49. mimi

    that guy, my mistake

    fordham-chaminade

  50. giants hater

I have an intresting question what happens as far as the no.
1 spot if this were to happen. lets say Suffern ends up with 3 loses and Mamaroneck ends up with 3 loses.
Sufferns 3 would be westgenny, Canton and one to Mam
Mamaronecks 3 loses would be white plains , Rye and Suffern
who would end up in second and who would end up in first?
Mamaroneck goes undefeated against upstate teams but lose 3 down here. Suffern loses 2 up there and 1 down here who’s ahead of who?

  51. sec1 fan

First off, Suffern plays Mamaroneck twice.

Secondly, league is done by league standings. So if Suffern has 0 or 1 league losses then they would be the league champ. Out of league games mean nothing.

  52. sec1 fan

I didnt see that you had Mam in there. I was looking for the word Mamaroneck.

But still, its by league Win Loss. Suffern would be 13-1, Mamo would be 11-3.

  53. fanotgame

to Rye Queensbury. The shots were 24-5 Queensbury in the first period where Rye players were trying to get rid of their bus legs. Rye outshot and outplayed the Spartans in periods 2 and 3. Benincasa did have a good first period, although he would have liked to have the third goal back- scored at the buzzer fom a very sharp angle. Queensbury very good, but either of Rye or Pelham playing their best could get past them in a state quarter.

  54. mamk tourney

    RTH vs. Stepinac scores/updates?

  55. giants hater

section 1 fan I know they play each other twice what I meant
is what happens if theres a split.

lets try this lets say Suffern loses to Pelham , West Genny,
mamaroneck and White Plains. lets say Mamaroneck loses are to Rye , White plains, Suffern and 1 game against Massena
so the 2 top teams have 4 loses and the other teams more now who gets first and second place?

  56. Fordham-Chaminade

Flyers 4-Rams 3. Rams going nowhere fast. Chaminade is in 1st place.

  57. Hockey Fan

It might be me, but I really feel that the Hockey Blogging has really start to drop off. The past two years, this blog was packed with fellow bloggers. So far this year, with MaxLine not being utilized and us bloggers unaware who is playing whom and where the games are being played, has left alot of us in the dark for this Hockey season. In the past, you would see 200-300 bloggers on a certain topic, now we’re lucky we get sixty. It’s ashame!

  58. sec1 fan

I believe goal differential is the next tie breaker. Im not sure about that.

  59. high school

If Suffern and Mamaroneck split their games and both ended up with say two other losses it would go by who they lost ot in desending order. So lets say Pelham finishes third behind those two. You would look at what Suffern and Mamaorneck did vs. Pelham. If they both swept Pelham you would go to the fourth place team and so on. I think its a moot point as Mamaroneck already has two league losses that I doubt Suffern will suffer. Suffern would have to lose both to Mamaroneck, and Mamaroneck could not lose another league game. With the sweep of Suffern Mamaroneck gets it as head to head is the first criteria. Its too early to look at the seedings now. You`ll get a better feel by Martin Luther King Day when more league games are in

  60. teetime

Hockey fan-Once the journal news went to max prep everything fell apart. But the quality of HS hockey seems to have fallen the past 2 or 3 seasons.

  61. sec1 fan

I mean we also have had 14 posts in the past 11 days. So its more spread out.

  62. ACHA

    For those who care again,

    D. 1 Club team Penn State after losing to NCAA D. 3 Salem St. 2-1 last night, beat NCAA D. 3 Salve Regina 8-0 in the Third Place game.

  63. Alum

Any scores from the “Jungle” Tournament at Hommocks?

  64. So ACHA???

There is nothing wrong with Club Hockey. 95% of the kids around here will play Club DIII if lucky. Most will not make DI Club teams.

  65. Final Score

Mamaroneck beats Monroe Woodbury 6-1 to win the Tiger Tournament.

  66. ACHA

Like I said before, I am not promoting one league or the other. I know a lot of parents and kids and coaches read this, I am just trying to gage the level a little. Some people still think one league is much better than the other. I am just trying to show how sometimes a club team and dominate a D. 3 team and vice versa…..The message I am trying to send is that unless you can get a D.1 scholorship, keep all your options open, and find a place that is right for you…..I am happy with your response, the response that these scores is no big deal, shows we have made progress. You are obviously a person who gets it!

  67. LoHud Hockey

    Hockey fan-

If you are looking for who is playing whom, use the section 1 website, which is:

    http://www.section1hockey.com

Since the Journal News does not have anything up for any of the winter sports (it’s not just hockey they have stopped paying attention to), this is the way to go. There are lists of recent scores and upcoming games as well as full schedules (with results) & rosters for every team. The stats should be up within the next week or so.

Also, although the JN is ignoring all winter sports, News Channel 12 seems to only be ignoring hockey. Has anyone noticed they don’t even give the final scores of games anymore? They devote a bunch of time to basketball, but aside from a couple of clips from the Mamk/Pelham & Suffern/WP games earlier this week, I haven’t heard a single mention of HS Hockey from Walt Fowler or Pete Ruff!!!

  68. Al Bundy

Just a cursory review of the JN basketball blog show’s multiple daily posts by the blog moderator, Kevin Devaney, but not as much blogging activity from readers. Ths despite Iona Prep losing in a major private-public school showdown with Peekskill.

    Sorry about that mimi..

Considering the number of basketball playing high schools in the section vs. hockey playing high schools you’d think there would be much more blog activity over there..

  69. Club Hockey

ACHA: Yes there is definately nothing wrong with club hockey. Kids actually have to watch which school they attend if they want to play. Schools like Delaware, Penn State, RI, Michagan they might not even make. There are yearly showcases they can attend that Club coaches go to.
