Tiger tournament trophy back in Mamaroneck

Mamaroneck broke Monroe-Woodbury’s four-year reign in the Tiger holiday tournament, defeating the Crusaders 6-1 last night at Hommocks. This avenged Mamaroneck’s worst loss last year, a 5-0 defeat to M-W in this tournament.
Just like at Pelham, it was balanced offense (six players scored), tight defense and timely goaltending from Luke Glaser. M-W lost most of its scoring and a great goalie from last year, but the Tigers are still outplaying and outhustling teams right now.
In the consolation, Stepinac’s Steven Yankowski (four goals) had a natural hat trick in less than four minutes of the third period as the Crusaders came back to defeat Rye Town/Harrison 6-4. Rocco Miano (one goal, five assists) had a hand in all six goals. Nice showing by Stepinac, who were missing two more players this weekend from an already small bench, and a tough break for the Titans, who can’t seem to get any positive momentum going right now.
Elsewhere, Brewster scored five unanswered goals in the first period and went on to a 9-3 win over Mount Pleasant. Iona Prep took care of John Jay 6-1, and Nicky Belger had three goals and three assists as Lakeland/Panas defeated the Albany-area school Mohonasen 8-6.
Monday is usually a slow day, but not this week. Two more holiday tournaments get underway — Nyack/TZ-Newburgh and North Rockland-Pearl River at Palisades, and John Jay-Pawling and Fox Lane-Brewster at Brewster.
Greeley beat Newburgh already this season, so I fully expect North Rockland to win the Nyack tournament, but the Fox Lane tournament appears wide open. Brewster is obviously playing well right now, Pawling is 6-1-1, John Jay is winless but against tough competition, and Fox Lane is struggling but I’m sure they want this to be the time they turn their season around. Elsewhere Suffern is playing in the Oswego tournament (it opens against the host) and Pelham is at Niskayuna.
Finally, exciting news — the ratings are in, and the Varsity Central Live hockey show has been picked up! Tuesday night at 7:30 at lohud.com/vclive. This time the special guests will be Matt Willows and Chris McIndoe of Clarkstown North, so start thinking of some good questions to ask.

No excuses for the loss but RTH has played with their top guys hurt or out the entire year. They only had 5 forwards for the game and only two that even take a regular shift. Starting goalie, two senior captains and their defense all were not there. RTH is not as bad as everybody thinks, granted they havent won a game yet, but I think they will bounce back and get it together.
who scored for the titans?
good luck upstate suffern. make us proud. represent the section well.
Joe Bop: Not as bad as what? They haven’t won, hardly have any players who are good and would have trouble beating some L3 teams.
Anyone happen to know the final in the Yorktown/O’Neill game from last night?

Mimi: Can you fill me in on how Iona loses to Chaminade and Fordham and then fordham loses to Chaminade. Also what is with St. Anthony beating Fordham but losing to everyone else.
You seem to be on top of the CHSHL.
chshl,
when iona played fordham, it was at the beginning of the season when iona was testing out their junior goalie (lacrosse player with 1 year on skates) before they decided to go with the soph. goalie (who is currently splitting time between V and JV)...that game, fordham had what seemed like a dozen shots and goals coming in as flutters from the blue line
st. anthony’s seemed to be hyped up big time this past summer when it was decided they were joining chshl. yes, they did beat st. mary’s (powerhouse out of manhasset that plays “club” scheduling, meaning no limits on number of games played, and has kids live with local families just to play hockey there). what most people failed to realize was that st. anthony’s title (nysaha, aka “club”) team from last year was loaded with seniors. this year’s squad is very young. nevertheless, you cannot go by their record. most of their losses have been 1/2 goal games and they’ve been getting better with each game.
chaminade, more so than st. anthony’s, has the classic junior/travel problem. most of the hockey talent chooses (is actually told) not to play V and rather to play for their club. hence, why people say chaminade’s jv could stay with or even beat the V (same argument applies for st. anthony’s). however, what i’ve noticed from this year’s chaminade squad is that, besides a very very good goalie, i’ve noticed more apple core/royals bags entering the locker room, so it looks like some of these kids are starting to come back…
St Anthony lost 17 players from last year, according to its coach.Nice Addition to the CHSHL. Also heard Burke may join next season. Would like to also see Columbia Prep in nyc join. They play out of Riverbank and would be an addtion to the C league.
Why all this talk about the CHSHL? WHO CARES??? Take your blog to someplace else and stop posting to this site. NO ONE CARES about your teams or your players here!!!
who cares,
way to promote the blog, there you go
instead of iona, fordham, stepinac, let’s talk about byram hills and horace greeley
Score on Nyack/TZ – NFA?
Who Cares:
Its a HS hockey blog. What did you contribute to it?The section teams and CHSHL play each other on a regular basis and are ranked together.
You haven’t distingished youself as an expert or authority by your comments. So allow us to exchange our thoughts, and our comments.
Newburgh beat Nyack/TZ 6-3
to Who CAres!
Regardless what you think, Iona Prep & Fordham will have some of the most competitive teams in this area for the next 3-4 years. That is why your Suffern’s, Monroe Woodbury’s, Mamaroneck’s want to play these CHSHL teams. If you want a competitive game, get them on your schedule. If not, then don’t schedule them.
Who cares – I hear your sister cares
i was really a let down by the performance by monroe woodbury. The one player who got thrown out at the end was really unbelievable and decided to take out their losing frustration on the ice by starting to hit some of the mamk players with cheap shots, which is why he got thrown out. There was also another incident when one of the Monroe Woodbury kids was laid out by hagan and the MW player looks at the ref and the ref doesnt call anything so he gets up and goes to hit one of the mamk players which happened to be c.glaser and the monroe woodbury kids helmet came off and he threw a punch, but wasnt ejected. I felt the refs did a poor job which is why by the end both teams were going at it. i dont think the refs should stop every play but when a punch is thrown they should do something abt it. I think the w.p fight made the mamk kids more reluctant to want to start another fight this time especially when they are up 6-1. overall mamk dominated this game and they didnt need to fight bak to prove anything they jus let the scoreboard do all the talking.
mamk should go out and ref! Didnt look like chap complained once! I was at both games and did not see anyone going at it last night. It is Hockey pushing and shoving is part of the game.
Any goalie can look good if they are only getting 10 shots a game, would macidoes gaa be the same if he were getting more?
Mimi: Thanks for the update. Although Iona has found a goalie, who let in 8 goals vs. Chaminade the other night?
Stepinac with it’s short bench beats Fordham 6-0 and loses to Iona big. They are relying on just a few players and a young goalie.
Chaminade has beaten everyone with or without their travel players. Fordham seems to have a lot of travel players yet they are 2-4 so far. Why is that?
St. Anthonys has lost to Fordham 6-1 and beaten them 6-3 while losing to everyone else? They where supposed to be great this year.
I would like to agree with you that Iona is the team to beat but based on their last loss I am not sure of any of these teams.
freddy
im sure u wouldnt be saying that if the mamk player decided to respond and a fight broke out and you wud probably be trash talking mamk, how they aren’t isn’t dicipline. we all have our own thoughts, so i respect urs, even though i do not agree.
So the Mamaroneck player thinks that Monroe Woodbury was taking cheap shots and starting a fight out of frustration in losing the game.
That is EXACTLY what happened to them in White Plains. They got 1 game suspensions but deserved the 4 game fighting penalty. Curious they didn’t get it but it would be smart of those in glass houses not to throw stones!
no i dont trash talk anyone players or officials. All i am saying is if you dont like what you see go out and do a better job. Why does everyone push blame to the next person or the refs. Go out and become officials and lets see what you can do. I would never want that job
‘Who cares?’ I’d like you to leave the site and never come back. The CHSHL is local high school hockey. Its a high school hockey blog for the area covered by the Journal News. What is your problem with people talking CHSHL hockey?
iona beat john jay 6-1 and burke catholic 4-1 over the weekend. upcoming games are against monroe-woodbury and suffern, some of the top teams in the public school league. we will see who cares !
iona also didn’t lose to farrell yet (1w, 1t)
basically, chshl wide open…if some of those st. anthony’s 1/2 goal losses were 1/2 goal wins, that group of 6 defines parity…
Sufferns game upstate starts at 7 and i hope we will be getting updates.
Some questions to ask Matt are Are you disappointed that North is playing a lower leauge schedule? Do you miss playing Suffern, White plains, Mamaroneck and Pelham to metion a few big names?
who does he think will end up in first place in leauge 1?
Which team would he most want to play in the section final?
are you looking forward to the 1 game against White plains?
and what do you expect in that game?
Any Suffern updates?
Will pass along any Suffern updates…anyone hear who won the first game Canton vs Lancaster? Suffern should beat
Oswego tonight. Oswego is 1-6-1, I believe. Syracuse Post is slow in posting results
Pawling beat John Jay 4-2….any updates on the Brewster vs. Fox Lane game?
does any1 know who won the first game of the oswego tourny? canton or lancaster? i feel like these games arent doing much to help increase sufferns ability. the only team that was actually relatively good was west genny. oswego is terrible this year and aquinas is doin terrible this year too. i dont know much abt lancaster or canton but i dont think there as good as last year when lancaster played MW for regionals or something similar not quite sure. mamk and suffern if the geography based leagues go into effect have tournys together and invite two other upstate power houses like willy north or west genny for one of them and massena and like fayetteville-manilius for the next or whoever is doing well. im sure suffern and mamk wud benefit from it since they wudnt play league games anymore
For Matt…so why did you ditch your team last year when the needed you the most?
Did you come back now that they are a league 2 team and you knew you would probably be able to set a gazillion records because you are 10000x better than anyone on the ice?
any score from palisades? PR-NR? what about brewster-fox lane?
North Rockland beat Pearl River 4-1. They play Newburgh in the championship of the Nyack/TZ tourney tomorrow night at 6:00 at the Palisades Mall. Nyack/TZ plays Pearl River at noon in the consolation.
thanks lohud
Suffern won 3-0…will face Lancaster tomorrow.
Anyone know how Pelham did up in Niskayuna tonight?
Pelham wins 7-2.
Flory scores a hat trick just playing the 1st and 3rd period. He broke his skate in the second. Mamone had 2. Hernandez and Dzenis one apiece.
Pelham won 7-2. Flory 3-1, Mamone 2-2, Emerson 0-3. Matt Hernandez and Victor Dzenis were the other goal scorers.
i should have known sec1 fan was going to be right on top of it
Any idea who they play tomorrow in the championship?
Saranac Lake
And Marc just called me to give me the update. It’s been a very boring family vacation.
A lot of home cooking penalties in this one. I believe we had 10 or 11. Offense never had a chance to really get it going. I don’t think you can look worse and still manage to get a 3-0 shut out! Gabriel was stellar in the net with 22 saves. Play Lancaster tomorrow at 11am.
looking forward to seeing Willows and McIndoe on the show tomorrow night – i’m guessing there will be some interesting questions asked.
harold,
any idea when section1hockey.com will have all the stats and stuff
its almost been running a month and nothing is up
The stats should be up on this site within a week.
Suffern beat Lancatser 4-2
