More titles upstate, and VC update

December
30

Suffern and Pelham both picked up some more hardware for Section 1 upstate, while Pawling and North Rockland won local tournaments in a pretty action-packed Tuesday. Now there will be a two-day break before some more big games this weekend.

Andrew Emerson had three goals and two assists to lead Pelham to a the championship of the Niskayuna tournament with a 6-0 win over Saranac Lake, the same team Emerson needed a last-minute goal to beat two weeks ago. Marc Flory had two goals and three assists and Mike Mamone had a goal and three assists. Gavin Lambdin stopped 18 shots to record his first shutout of the season.

Tournament MVP Zac Hiller had a goal and two assists to lead Suffern to the championship of the Oswego Invitational with a 4-2 win over Lancaster in the first ever meeting between the programs. Johnny Hill and Greg McCarron each added a goal and an assist.

Locally, Matt Ng saw Matt Burdick score a hat trick as Pawling defeated Fox Lane 4-1, despite 45 saves from converted defenseman Cody Williams (I’ll provide the link when I get it). Tournament MVP Mike DeLaVergne made 15 saves for Pawling. In the consolation game, John Jay earned its first win of the season, beating Brewster 8-5. Kyle Greenberg had two goals and two assists in the win.

At the Nyack/Tappan Zee tournament, MVP Alex Nestle made 25 saves as North Rockland defeated Newburgh 5-0 in the championship game. Craig Meany’s shot from the point four minutes into the second period was the only goal through 30 minutes, but the Red Raiders depth and conditioning finally paid off, as Sean O’Connor, Steven D’Alisera, Mike Meigh and Nick D’Amelio all scored in the third period to clinch the title.

Pearl River defeated Nyack/Tappan Zee 4-2 in the consolation game, breaking a 2-2 tie early in the third period when Ryan McArdle coverted a 2-on-0 breakaway off a pass from Paul Moreau.

One other score to report — St. Peter’s Prep beat Stepinac 5-2 at the Ice Vault in Wayne, N.J., Rocco Miano had a goal and an assist for the Crusaders and teammate Michael Lanaro stopped 39 shots.

Thanks to Clarkstown North seniors Matt Willows and Chris McIndoe for joining me in the studio tonight for the second broadcast of Varsity Central Live, and of course all of you for watching and contributing. The show will can be accessed at lohud.com/vclive (if it doesn’t come on immediately, or if it starts at a random point, click “on demand” and it’s the one from Dec. 30. From there you can skip to any point in the show). Stay tuned for next week’s schedule, and hopefully some more special guests.

Finally, we’ve set up an email address for coaches, parents, fans, players to send in suggestions about our new Varsity Central site: vcfeedback@lohud.com. Send us your thoughts and we’ll see what we can do.

Like everyone else, I’m off the next two days but I’ll be back soon enough with a special feature that I’m going to start for 2009, and a look ahead at this weekend’s action.

  1. Suffern and Pelham

I know Suffern lost to W Genny and Pelham to Queensbury this year but those two Genny and Queensbury are the top ranked schools in the state when was the last time Pelham and Suffern had losing times upstate? I`ll bet its been quite some time

  2. stats

here are the stats for suffern this year

Mamaroneck is heading up to Auburn N.Y. on friday to play in their annual tournament.

I’ll bring this up and for those that don’t like it they can ignore it like talk about ACHA hockey or Iona JV teams. This may interest a few Rocklanders who follow sports along our New Jersey border.

Don Bosco Prep, Gordon Conference power, lost a 4-3 OT game thriler to small school public school Ramsey, NJ last night. These schools are in the same town and usually avoid playing any sport against each other. It’s a big thing since those local kids can play competitive hockey with their families avoiding the 10k tuition bill. The coach of Ramsey, Bob Toy, is an excellent hockey man who coached at the Ramapo Saints…Congratulations Coach!

For further reference Suffern, Don Bosco and Ramsey high schools are all with 2 miles of each other on the NY/NJ border. Suffern does play DBP later this year in what I view as a pretty important public/private matchup. Perhaps DBP will be a bit more motivated after last nights lose.

  5. Show

anyone else see Willows and McIndoe on the show last night? what did everybody think?

Concerning your new Varsity Central site.

If you have read any of the earlier blogs since November, you would of noticed alot of thoughts about your current “BELOW PAR” website and how it could be improved!. It’s now almost January and we are 3 months into the season, now you’re asking for ideas for your website, well I think you’re a little LATE!

Just go look at the old website through Max. Thgey supplied us with all the information that we needed to find out and compare it to what you’re offering all of us.You could see who were the top leaders in all categories, by league, who are the top goalies etc….. Your current website really failed us. It’s ashame!

I agree that the old website provided all of the essential information in a format that made a lot of sense. Simply replicate that info and format.

    Re: New VC site
The point of the e-mail address is so you can let my editors know what you think, so please use it. You are certainly free to vent on the blog, as you’ve been doing, but as you can see it that hasn’t getten us very far, since there’s nothing I can do about it.

Varsity Central broadcast last night was great. The 2 kids seemed like nice kids. I wish you had asked them more about their hockey history. Specifically what interests me is how did Matt Willows get to be so good (and why did McIndoe quit baseball to play lacrosse? HS pitchers start throwing a little too hard maybe?). I always like to know the background of hockey players. Maybe Willows is just a great athlete but if he started playing hockey when he was 4 on his backyard rink like Gretzky thats something I’d be interested to know. It looks like he may set the single season scoring record for NY State.

    happy new years to everyone!!!

Just got home. I think I’ll be up just in time for the Winter Classic. Happy New Years all.
