LoHud Skills Competition

January
27

Rye Town/Harrison almost picked up a huge victory last night, but White Plains scored twice in the third period to come away with a 4-3 win at Playland. Ryan McGee of WP and Adam Urban of RTH each had a goal and two assists. White Plains stays in the League 1 race, but now must face Section 1’s four state-ranked team all in a row — Clarkstown North, Mamaroneck, Pelham, Suffern — in an eight-day span that begins Thursday.

There’s two games tomorrow, both from League 2 — Scarsdale-Yorktown and North Rockland-Mount Pleasant. As you can see from the previous post, if MP is going to make a playoff push, it needs to begin now, while both Scarsdale and North Rockland could both end up seeded anywhere from 6-9.

Inspired by this past weekend, here’s a question for everyone — who would win a LoHud Skills Competition? The events are fastest skater, hardest shot, most accurate shot and best breakaway. I have my answers but I’ll let everyone weigh in first.

Also, Matt Moran of North Rockland is in the running for this week’s Gameface, and tune into Varsity Central Live tonight at 7:30.

  9. chsaaguy

someone noted this earlier, and they are correct

tiebreaker (if teams are tied in points) in chshl goes in this succession

    -most wins
    -least losses
    -head-to-head record
    -least goals allowed
    -most goals scored
    -least penalty minutes

  10. why?

why is it necessary to bash a dignified coach like chap i bet none of you have ever met him and have no real opion you just base your statements on what you hear and having met Chap i can say he is without a doubt one of the most caring and sucessful coaches in New York Hockey

  11. dream world

Are we talking about the Mamaroneck coach? Talk about someone who doesn’t know the meaning of sportsmanship. He’s all about the stats…bottom line. Classless

  12. sec1 fan

  13. RJB

Fastest Skater by far is Chris Mastrocola from Mahopac

  14. Taylor

How do all of you know so much about Mike Chiapparelli? I think most of this just comes from people being angry that Mamk didn’t punish those kids more harshly for the upstate shenanigans.

Sean Hagan definitely has the hardest shot. He’s like 6’2 220 or something like that. He can rifle it. Willows is definitely the most accurate. There’s a kid #2 on RTH who is very fast and also Paul Mundinger of Rye is very fast. Brett Jackson is fast too but I don’t like his breakaway moves. He has the wrong rhythm sometimes where he’ll fake in such a way that he ends up going back into the goalie so I don’t think he’s the best on breakaways. Dzenis is definitely a fast skater. He probably has the best first two steps in the section. Maybe he is the fastest. He plays D so he doesn’t get to show it off as much.

  15. sec1 fan

So pretty much you agree with me, Shot-Hagan, Speed- Dzenis/Urban, Accurate-Willows, how about breakaway?

  16. Get Real

No one bashed the Mamaroneck coach…..But it is pretty funny that anyone would even think that he is the best coach this year! It’s a joke how he handled those two small mistakes this year. It’s very clear to 90% of the peorple who blog that he was only interested in ONE THING! win at no cost…........................

  17. dream world

There are tons of double standards out there and coaches should realize that winning is important but teaching players what is right and what is wrong as well as how to be better individuals should come first. If you make a mistake, you should be punished for it. If your team is up by 5 or 6 goals, teach athletes how to win with honor. There are coaches in sections one and two who have forgotten that.

  18. skills

    Fastest-Dzenis
    Hardest SHot-Hagan
    Most Accurate-Willows
    Best Breakaway-Hagen

  19. fanotgame

Maybe they can have the skills competition bttween the DI and DII finals at West Point. Except some of the listed players may be playing in the games.

Here is my list of upperclassmen invitees (can only do one category-spread the wealth):

    FASTEST:
    Srs.- Urban, O’Conner, Hiller
    Jrs.- Ciotti, Dzenis, Mundinger

    HARDEST:
    Srs.- Hagan, Hill, McCarrick
    Jrs.- McGee, Norwin, Klimchuck

    MOST ACCURATE:
    Srs.- Burdick, Jackson, Emerson
    Jrs.- Hagen, Miller, Katsuta

    BREAKAWAY DANGLER:
    Srs- Willows,Flory,Marasco
    Jrs- Mastracloa, Olivario, Pesce

  20. leagueone

Totally agree about Dzenis, Taylor. He has the quickest feet of anyone out there and hustles 100% of the time. His first two steps are are the fastest, for sure. Love to watch him skate.

  21. Mountie

Hard to judge Willows against L2 competition. He didn’t look that accurate in the NR game. Maybe he was just a little off that day, or maybe he is just used to weak goaltenders?

  22. tigershockeyfan

There should be a category for best stick handler….Joe Marasco is one of the best in the section

  23. RB

    Fastest players – Chris Mastrocola
    Hardest shot – Joe Marasco
    Most Accurate – Matt Willows

  24. WP Fan

    Fastest Skater Mastrocola
Hardest shot – Sean Hagan Mamo
    Most accurate- Willows
    Best breakawy jackson

  25. Coach of the Year

Mancuso – Scarsdale. 9-4-1, having lost 9 seniors. Playing mostly with freshman and sophomores in a very short rotation. Clearly they do not have the talent nor depth of the top programs (Suffern, Mamo, CN, Pelham etc), but have far exceeded expectations and have some nice wins over (Fordham, North Rockland, Rye and Burke Catholic).

  26. fiya

    fastest=urban
    hands down

  27. CN

    fastest: urban
    best shot: hagan
    most accurate: hill
    breakaway: willows

  28. Mamk fan

    best stick handler- Brett Jackson

  29. Taylor

Breakaways don’t happen that much in games so that’s a tough one. You really have to see a lot of games to get a feel for that. In the Pelham game Sat Jackson kind of messed up a breakaway a little bit I thought. If forced I’d say Willows or Flory.

  30. I know Taylor

Taylor Sanders. I am almost certain you were a 100 career point player. I remember watching you with Jonny Marshall and those teams. You had a younger brother that played also Matthew?? Pelham has a pretty good alumni game you go to that right?

  31. Taylor

I’ve only been to the alumni game twice. Its not an official thing. If someone puts it together AND I find out about it I go. I think the Pelham Hockey Association should do an official one, that’d be pretty cool.

  32. benders

    haha

  33. chsaaguy

if you want to incorporate local chshl, for iona, i can say these are contenders (fordham/stepinac supporters, please fill in any if worth posting…)

    fastest skater – possibly cambria
hardest shot – noone inparticular on their V, but the D-man patalano on JV (6’0”, 200 and growing) has a blast from the point..

  34. ?

Stop all this talk about not knowing if Willows is only good and accurate because he plays against scrub goalies. He’s played AAA his hole life and has led the Atlantic Hockey League in points and goals since like 05’. He’s played on national festival teams for the past few years. Yes, he can snipe any goalie easily in the section.

  35. easy

    fastest: willows
    biggest breakaway dangler: willows
    hardest shot: willows
    most accurate: willows

  36. chsaaguy

fastest skater vote – for next year, 2 jv gaels who literally fly, logerfo and chiariello

  37. ...

if they could fly they’d be at hogwarts..or maybe just on varsity

  38. chsaaguy

    ...

maybe b/c iona V has an unwritten rule to never take freshmen (nates and cambria only ones in history)...and maybe b/c chshl jv (at least half of the division, then all those nonleague games) is competitive and a good grooming process…maybe lol

  39. To Harold

Harold – Scarsdale plays Yorktown tonite (tues), Ice Hutch at 6:30. I think your intro refers to them playing tomorrow nite (wed).

  40. no one cares about the chsaa

    fastest skater: willows, north
    accurate shot: willows, north
    hardest shot: hagan, mamo
    breakaway: hagen, etb

  41. reality

    OK, enough Mrs. Oliverio!

And Dzenis from Pelham? I guess you’d say he looked real sharp against Mamo last Saturday night! Only got burned 4 times for all 4 Mamo goals. And threw a punch when he got frustrated. Give us all a break, please.

Let’s hear what the boss has to say…

  42. Westchester Hockey

    Chsaaguy

There were more freshmen at Iona playing varsity. I know of at least a couple two years ago with Cambria – McArdle and Kirincic.

  43. chsaaguy

    wahwahwaaaaahhhh

looks like the WP/CN game Thursday afternoon is looking more and more like a blowout…WP has to come from behind to win against RTH??? Is RTH that good?? Are they going to give Rye a game tomorrow? (1/28)

RCDS has another home game…tomorrow (1/28) hosting st. thomas moore

Is North Roc all hype? Or are they more than decent? I think I’m going to stop by Tuckahoe Road tonight (1/27) for a bit and check some of it out…

Friday will be busy…lots of Section 1…2 CHSHL games (major playoff implications) in Coney Island

  44. reality

I agree. No one cares about the CHSAA. Bunch of League 3/4 teams that everyone in League 1/2 can beat.

And no one, NO ONE, gives a you know what about JV. Please stop making us read all this JV nonsense.

  45. High School has talent

Take this info how ever you want it.

According the the NHL Central Scouting Boreau, Alex Velischek is scheduled to be drafted in the 5th Round or so of the NHL Draft. He has the advantage of being 6 feet and 200 pounds. However, he plays with Willows and Shuman on travel, and Willows and Shuman both have more points than Velschek for the Morris County Colonials.

  46. chsaaguy

    westchester hockey, you’re right

McArdle played as a frosh…but it has been noticeable that ever since he stopped playing Apple Core with Cambria, his talent/performance has dipped…

Kirincic was there as a frosh solely to watch and learn from McCabe and co….he rarely played as a frosh.

Outside of Cambria and McArdle, Nates from years ago, don’t remember any other frosh playing (Cody King started V as a soph.)

Iona had multiple talented freshmen come to the school and play JV as freshmen (Peter Ferraro, went on to play at Avon, play D1 at Sacred Heart….Tom Collingham, went on to play at RCDS, play D1 at Vermont, play pro in Germany/U.S….etc….Maldonado, went on to prep/boarding, was captain last year at D3 Middlebury…)

Guess CHSHL JV really sucks lol

  47. Taylor

    Dress warm chsaaguy.

How can Iona have all these great players on JV and not even have a dominant varsity team? It doesn’t make sense. Maybe at Iona they care more about winning on the JV level.

Willows is probably the fastest now that I think about it but he’s genetically engineered so what do you expect? He’s practically bionic.

  48. chsaaguy

taylor, LT success = valued more than ST success

  49. chsaaguy

    former iona jv players

maldonado (last year’s captain at middlebury)
peter ferraro (d1 sacred heart, pro u.s.)
tom collingham (d1 vermont, pro germany, pro u.s.)

kirincic was there to learn from mccabe and co…he rarely played…was a little itty bitty guy

yes, mcardle was there with cambria, but thats when they were playing apple core together…mcardle that year stopped playing apple core and it has showed…his talent/performance has dropped…

honestly, probably nates, kirincic and mccabe were the only freshmen ever to play V…even cody king didn’t play v as a frosh…or delsonno…

  50. leagueone

    chsaaguy,
you’re getting as obnoxious as the whiners.

  51. chsaaguy

i meant nates, kirincic, cambria (not nates, kirincic, mccabe)

sorry leagueone, just trying to post useful info, gets hard when it feels like you’re getting attacked like its a screaching catfest

  52. leagueone

No problem. I think it’s hard enough for some to get into the Catholic league stuff, but to ask them to consider the JV too, is a bit much for them to handle. I think it’s good to know who’s coming up.

Agree about Chiariello. Talented, but his deke moves haven’t been too successfull with higher level goalies this year. Needs to pass a bit more.

  53. Taylor

I know but what I’m saying is that if they’re so awesome they should be up on varsity helping the varsity win more games. If they’re as good as some people here keep saying they could be helping the varsity. If they’re not good enough to make the varsity better right now then some of you are overstating how good they are just a little bit.

  54. chsaaguy

    leagueone,

agreed on both parts there. maybe we’ll see a chshl blog one day lol

chiariello and logerfo both have the moves, just have to learn when to make those drop passes, sure shots, passes to the point, dumps, etc…typical things to work on for freshmen who have an insane amount of skill that when honed can be scary…

  55. leagueone

Agree, Taylor. You throw out the “keep the Freshman and Soph’s on JV” rule if they out perform, out skate the upper classmen. It only makes sense. Team division should be based on skill

  56. chsaaguy

taylor, as leagueone, topshelf and some others understand already, chshl (specifically iona/chaminade/farrell/now st. ant’s as they’ve joined chshl) do not believe in bringing up freshmen to V…A), there is a solid JV program and B), you are typically groomed better when doing at least a year on JV (leadership qualities, honing skills, learning as a unit, etc.)

look at the names above who went through it..

the philosophy is not necessarily “this kid is nasty, he’s playing V right away”

  57. Not South of the Canadian border

Here is what was said about Maldonado last spring as a Senior @ Middlebury with Beaney.. Not too many like him playing locally.

Tom Maldonado, a native of the Bronx, New York, played more than 100 games during his career at Middlebury and collected more than 100 points, including nine goals and 18 assists during his last campaign.

Middlebury coach Bob Beaney called Maldonado an offensive and defensive mainstay who, while small for a defenseman at 5-foot-8, “has a big heart.”

“Tommy has displayed great character,” Beaney said. “You don’t see many hockey players coming out of the Bronx. He has been a great leader and a strongly committed kid to the program. But as good as he is as a player, he is a better person. Tom has reached out to the community and has become a mentor to local kids in helping them with goal-setting and striving for success.

  58. chsaaguy

there are obviously rare exceptions to the unwritten rule (a nates, a cambria at his best, etc….i’d even say a king or delsonno), but alot of times, you’d be doing a disservice to the player…unless he’s THAT deserving and THAT much better of a player than the first 2 lines on V, it’s not going to happen

  59. chsaaguy

not south of the canadian border, well said

was a pleasure to watch tom the little time he was down here…you knew he was going somewhere after watching just one shift of him play…(you unfortunately knew he was going to go the do-2-years-then-transfer-out-to-do-2-years-plus-a-post-grad somewhere…)

  60. Al Bundy

I’ll repeat my post from yesterday about hyping JV teams.

This years Iona JV reports far exceed the famous “hype” about the Stepinac JV promotion of 2 seasons ago.

And this is a perfect illustration of what can become of the “world’s greatest JV hockey team”. The Stepinac JV group has enjoyed some success as a varsity, last year CHSHL runner-up and a respectable season this year, but they have not gone onto be the powerhouse that was predicted.

The Iona JV promoters should tamp down the expectations of this group. Their success will only be judged on how they perform as a varsity unit against Suffern, Mamaroneck, Pelham and Farrell varsity units which already have a very good core of freshmen and sophomores at the V level.

  61. Sec1fan

If Velischek played HS hockey against L2 goalies he’d have 100 goals already. Don’t compare him to Willows and Shuman!

  62. Taylor

Is he this guys’s son? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Randy_Velischek

  63. Yes

Yes, that is Alex Velischek’s father. Alex plays defense on the NJ Colonials team (stats). He is the type of player that can play either position. And be great at Both!

  64. Not South of the Canadian border

Maldonado playing defense for the New Mexico Scorpions CHL
as a Rookie he has 3 assist with a plus 7 rating.

Contrasted to Jason Murfitt of Manhattanville playing for Oklahoma City Blazers also CHL as a forward 6 goals 15 assist plus 6 rating.

Maldonado holding his own in the CHL can play with talent like Murfitt is really a big deal for a Bronx boy from our local area. Contrasted to Murfitt who is part of the Potvin family and grew up Ottawa which is the Capital of Candian Hockey.
Bottom line for our top players who want to work at it there is a way. It should be noted the CHL is not high paying about 400.00 per week during the season with room and board.

  65. chsaaguy

not south of the canadian border,

do you have any updates on collingham or ferraro? i know collingham had a stint in the echl (wheeling nailers) early this season and so did ferraro a year ago (jumping around here and there between echl, ihl, mid-atlantic hockey league)

  66. Ok

OK Harold, you set the stage. I know the answers to the above, but to prove it to the rest of your audience, you need to have this skills competition somewhere.

  67. suffern

Velischek is a defenseman, I hope willows and shuman have more points then him.

  68. Not South of the Canadian border

Tom Collingham on suspension with the Brroklyn Aces per their transactions.
Placed D Tom Collingham on team suspension from the Brooklyn Aces single A team ( Same team CJ Tozzo plays for)

Ferraro brothers are Twins from Port Jefferson Long Island rattling around the minors for almost 13 years. Somehow I think you have another Ferraro in mind.

  69. chsaaguy

not south of the canadien border, not those ferraros (who had call-ups to the Rangers and another NHL team I believe…)

their cousins from Pleasantville (Peter and Paul). Peter went to Sacred Heart, I think Paul is a senior there (Sacred Heart) now. Peter started at Iona Prep (JV), played soph. and jr. on Varsity, then transferred to Avon I believe for senior and post-grad. Paul I believe went to Byram Hills. (Both AppleCore products)

  76. reality is back!

Reality, we all know who you are. You need stop bashing Pelham. We know you have an axe to grind. Attacking a player like Dzenis is a new low for you. You need to grow up you are an adult

  77. LoHud Hockey

I don’t think you could put a skills competition between the championship games unless you don’t include anyone on the four teams that are playing that day (I doubt the coaches would allow their guys to go out and wear themselves out in a “fastest skater” competition a half hour before a game.

A possible good spot for it may be at the exceptional seniors game after the season is done. Book an extra hour of ice and put on the competition before the game. It may draw some extra interest in the game and give you a decent fan turn-out.

  78. sec1 fan

I was just thinking about it, kids from Pelham not playing Varsity make up a pretty good team.
Reycraft (Junior, Taft) Clayd (Junior Kent) Duffy (Senior Hitmen) Pellow (Senior, Iona) Pellow (Sophomore, Iona) Rooney (Senior Taft) McDermott (Freshman Iona) Kiernan (Senior Taft)
    Verrier (Freshman Mid-Farfield)
Throw on a few extra people for a bench and that’s an elite team..

  99. chsaaguy

catholic fan, harold and those interested

standings (tie-break rules incorporated) going into friday night (doubleheader at coney island, the fordham-chaminade game and the st. anthony’s-farrell game)

    1, stepinac, 7-4-1, 15
    2, farrell, 7-5-1, 15
    3, iona, 6-7-1, 13
    4, fordham, 6-7, 12
    5, st. anthony’s, 6-8, 11
    6, chaminade, 5-6-1, 11

    what do i think?

in the first of the doubleheader…you’ve got chaminade on such a decline…however, they have to know that they and stepinac have the most games in hand (3 remaining), so being what seperates a currently non-playoff team and a currently playoff team is 1 point as of now, i find it hard to believe they don’t show up. didn’t they have a crazy amount of shots in the stepinac game? then again, fordham has been hot as of late and is coming out like they want it bad. i say a tie, 3-3.

the next game is a toughie too. st. ant’s is just a machine on fire as of late (and easily the best team in the league with its entire bench). farrell knows it locks a playoff spot with a W. however, farrell has been on the decline like chaminade (outside of their recent iona W). farrell beat a depleted st. a’s team earlier in the season, but then lost to them 7-4 a week and a half ago. while looking at this matchup, you realize something else. the only way st. a’s makes the playoffs is if fordham loses 1 game to chaminade and ties the other against chaminade. ALSO, chaminade needs to lose its other remaining game (against stepinac). only in that scenario would st. a’s make it (assuming they beat farrell friday night). they’d be tied with fordham in points, tie break goes to st. a’s (more wins). they’d be tied with chaminade in points, tie break goes to st. a’s (more wins). the chances of this happening, 1 in 100 (but realistically probably better). the way the season has been going for st. a’s, the way chaminade has been playing horribly (i think will still lose to stepinac, even if stepinac clinched already and doesn’t need the points), it could happen. and if it does, watch out…easily winning championship if they get the chance… i say st. a’s 5, farrell 3 (eng)

    iona-stepinac the night after

    wow

just be there. desperation game is all you can say. place is going to be a mob scene. iona student body knows the implications and so does stepinacs. probably the same amount of ursuline, victory, maria, good counsel girls in the crowd too. and then you’ve got the parents and families…talk about an ice hutch parking lot nightmare…iona just plain out needs the W. stepinac has 2 more games (against farrell and against chaminade) to clinch, i think all they need is 1 point to clinch, not even a W. i say iona 3 stepinac 1

harold, just saw you posted a new topic. i’m going to copy this and throw it on that topic, too…

For all the CHSHL fans out there :) , Michael Spillane of Fordham would have to be considered for the fastest skater

  104. CHSHL Playoffs

    Farrell-Stepinac-Fordham-Iona will make the playoffs.

St. Ants misses by one point which is a shame because they are the best team right now. Fordham peaking at right time. Took apart a full squad Iona team Sunday. Only lost to St. Anthonys this past weekend beating Iona and Farrell. Also beat Stepinac last game easily with their full team. Could Fordham be the team to beat or will coaching come into play giving Stepinac the edge.

  105. CHSHL Fastest Skater

Brendan Massullo is faster than Spillane but it would be a nice race.

  106. That Guy

Alex Hagen of ETB would win everthing(fastest skater, hardest shot etc..)

as for sec1 fans comment about the pelham team. If they had all those kids they would be putting up ridiculous number and probably have close to a perfect record. However they would have to make room for all those players by cutting come other kids off.

I agree that Fordham is playing well now but would be surprised if Cham didn’t show up. If they do, they have a big size advantage over Fordham and are physical enough to cause them some problems. Also, McNally will play and nobody has n answer for him 6 2” offensive defenseman, misses a lot of games. Hasn’t played either game with Step and they won’t handle him either. St A’s easily over Farrell and Step-Iona a tossup but Iona should wear them down, no ? All good games.

  116. = opportunity

What if we had a skills comp for goalies?

  117. cham

The coach will probably not allow McNally to play for Cham because he doesn’t have playoff eligibility anyway. He has only played a few games.

  118. Harold Gutmann

I wanted to keep this up for 24 hours before i made my picks. I’m not sure it’s possible to do this before or between the Section 1 finals, but maybe it could be a neat addition to the outstanding seniors game?

    Division I
    Fastest skater: Adam Urban, RTH
    Hardest shot: Sean Hagan, Mamaroneck
    Most accurate: Alex Hagen, E/T/B
Best breakaway: Matt Willows, Clarkstown North

    Division II
Fastest skater: Paul Mundinger, Rye and Victor Dzenis, Pelham (maybe they can race before the next Pelham-Rye game?)
    Hardest shot: Joe Marasco, Somers/NS
    Most accurate: Mike Burdick, Pawling
    Best breakaway: Marc Flory, Pelham

  119. vipers

They had a skills competion at nationals and Feliu won the the goalie part. Halpin was our player and while he is very talented he is better at just playing real hockey cause he wasn’t too good at remembering the wierd rules the players had to follow. That was alot of fun for everybody and there were probably 600 people watching from all 12 teams. The year before when the bantam team made it as the host team i believe Pesce went for the players and Glaviano’s backup did the skills comp cause he didnt play in any of the games.
