Watch Varsity Central Live with Mamaroneck coach Mike Chiapparelli and Pelham coach Ed Witz tonight at 7:30 by clicking here. By my calculations, Chiap (315 wins) and Witz (310) are two of the THREE winningest active hockey coaches in New York, behind only Bill Plante of Salmon River (553) and Bob Rosen of Williamsville North (322). And here’s a connection you might not be aware of — Witz actually coached Mamaroneck’s JV baseball team when Chiap was the varsity coach.
Also, this is far away but I just found out that the next game we will broadcast live will be Suffern-White Plains from Ebersole on Feb. 5. I’ll post a reminder next week.
I’m obviously here in the office tonight, so any updates from Scarsdale-Yorktown or North Rockland-Mount Pleasant would be appreciated.

what do i think?
in the first of the doubleheader…you’ve got chaminade on such a decline…however, they have to know that they and stepinac have the most games in hand (3 remaining), so being what seperates a currently non-playoff team and a currently playoff team is 1 point as of now, i find it hard to believe they don’t show up. didn’t they have a crazy amount of shots in the stepinac game? then again, fordham has been hot as of late and is coming out like they want it bad. i say a tie, 3-3.
the next game is a toughie too. st. ant’s is just a machine on fire as of late (and easily the best team in the league with its entire bench). farrell knows it locks a playoff spot with a W. however, farrell has been on the decline like chaminade (outside of their recent iona W). farrell beat a depleted st. a’s team earlier in the season, but then lost to them 7-4 a week and a half ago. while looking at this matchup, you realize something else. the only way st. a’s makes the playoffs is if fordham loses 1 game to chaminade and ties the other against chaminade. ALSO, chaminade needs to lose its other remaining game (against stepinac). only in that scenario would st. a’s make it (assuming they beat farrell friday night). they’d be tied with fordham in points, tie break goes to st. a’s (more wins). they’d be tied with chaminade in points, tie break goes to st. a’s (more wins). the chances of this happening, 1 in 100 (but realistically probably better). the way the season has been going for st. a’s, the way chaminade has been playing horribly (i think will still lose to stepinac, even if stepinac clinched already and doesn’t need the points), it could happen. and if it does, watch out…easily winning championship if they get the chance… i say st. a’s 5, farrell 3 (eng)

just be there. desperation game is all you can say. place is going to be a mob scene. iona student body knows the implications and so does stepinacs. probably the same amount of ursuline, victory, maria, good counsel girls in the crowd too. and then you’ve got the parents and families…talk about an ice hutch parking lot nightmare…iona just plain out needs the W. stepinac has 2 more games (against farrell and against chaminade) to clinch, i think all they need is 1 point to clinch, not even a W. i say iona 3 stepinac 1

The chshl does a senior game at the end of the year. Maybe Harold can make happen sec 1 vs catholic all -star game. Also a skills compititon could take place in an ice slot before the game. Probably at Ice hutch but the very fast ice @ flushing would be ideal but not feasable.
It would be most interesting and need to start planning now. Here’s the question what kind of obsticles with sec 1 ect would hinder this happening?

Saw Stepinac last week and they are the team to beat. Doing it with just 9 players is some feat.
Stepinac lost to Mamaroneck 10-1. Miano dogged it the whole game and did not want to get hit at all. How can they be the team to beat?

It was interesting hearing Chap and Witz comment on the state of hockey in Westchester. Just a production note: the mikes on
the table are arranged such that whoever sits on the far left (your right) is hard to hear. Ideally, everyone should be miked. Granted, Chap has a gravely voice, but a lot was lost in translation due to the mikes. Otherwise, keep up the good work.
