Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley with Harold Gutmann

I did not see that coming

January
28

I spent time on tonight’s show talking about how unpredictable this season has been, but even I didn’t anticipate Mount Pleasant beating North Rockland 1-0, as apparently happened Tuesday night. Just to recap: Mount Pleasant’s only win since November was against Greeley (and it was by 1, and it was outshot). The Ice Cats have lost to teams from all four leagues. They are the only team from League 2 who probably won’t make the playoffs. Meanwhile, North Rockland tied Clarkstown North, beat E/T/B and lost to Scarsdale in overtime. All I can say is Wow, and congratulations to Mount Pleasant. It’s a little late for me to call the coach, so can anyone provide more details?

The other game last night went a little more according to plan. John Felix had three goals and two assists and Matt Oliviero had two goals and two assists to lead Scarsdale to a 5-3 win over Yorktown at the Ice Hutch. Joey Bonitatibus scored two goals for the ‘Huskers. The Raiders are now solidly in second place in League 2 at 4-1, ahead of E/T/B (2-2), Brewster (2-2-1) and North Rockland (2-2-1).

There’s two games scheduled for Wednesday. If they actually get played, I’m really interested to see how North Rockland will bounce back against Yorktown, and Rye Town/Harrison and its reconfigured lines get a chance to knock off rival Rye at Playland.

Also, the new state rankings came out, and it looks like I’m not the only one having trouble separating the big three in Division I. Suffern, Clarkstown North and Mamaroneck are ranked 7-9. By beating Suffern and losing to Mamaroneck, Pelham stays at 4. One other note: it’s too bad our Division I champ has to play Section 10. Undefeated Potsdam is currently third and Massena is sixth, meaning five of the top 10 large-school teams are in the same quarter. Over in Division II, Queensbury is second and Glens Falls is sixth.

  4. hockeyfan

Great job to all our section one powerhouse teams on their State rankings! Keep it up, boys!

  5. any given day

Congrats Mt Pleasant – Total team effort.
N0RTH Rockland may have been caught looking ahead.
Marinelli had the winning goal but it was his defense that
was spectacular. He kept O’Connor #21 frustrated all night.
    Jampol was great in goal.

  6. crazy year so far

now bottom League 2 teams are beating top League 2 teams – MP beating NR only adds to the fact that is has been a crazy year across the section!

  7. chsaaguy

safe to say all games postponed for today?

  8. sec1 fan

The only public high school in Westchester that is open is Pelham…. literally the only one

  9. RA

What I hear is that Mt Pleasant had a total team effort. Marinelli played great, Jampol was stellar and Abramo and Yarribino didnt come off the ice the last 10 min of the game. Great win but too late

  10. rinker

maybe rth and rye will play because they both play at playland

does anyone know if games are cancelled if school is closed

  11. Westchester Mariners D

Great job Brendan! Terrific win for your team.

  12. oh yeah

Brendan Marinelli is the man. There’s no way around it.

  14. hockeymaven

  15. HighSchoolHockey

Games are cancelled if the school is closed.

  16. man in the stands

    Never saw either team but

    1. 22 for Mt p was a stand out.I was told he is only a sophomore.(wow) Not big but plays with heart.
Goalie made alot of nice saves.
N Rockland had alot of nice shots and chance but could not finish. They are a good team with great defense.
  17. Sec 1 Follower

North Rockland was def. all just hype. They “should” have beat Scarsdale and MP and lost both. They don’t have any good wins. Someone back me up here.

  18. league2

NR does have a good win vs. ETB. But, ETB didn’t have half of their team…so I will partially agree with you. They also did manage to squeak out a tie vs. CN while being dominated the entire game.

    Harold,

which state rankings is everybody going by because i found these to http://www.ushsho.com/nyrank

  20. CN

    1. 22 for MP WAS A STANDOUT. I was told he is only a sophomore. WOW. Not big but plays with heart.

  22. ...

And in that game Willows broke his skate 5 minutes into the game and played with someone elses skates 2 sizes smaller LOL

  23. Harold Gutmann

    Hockey fan,
I was using the New York State Sportswriters poll, but your poll was pretty similar. I guess it just depends who you trust more — people or computers

Rye-RTH is cancelled by the way

  24. uscho is off

that uscho site is based on scores of games not match ups between teams. The only thing that is accurate is the reported scores page. They are all over that but the rankings are baseless
Sports writers poll at least these writers cover the teams and know the match ups

  25. mamk

myhockeyrankings.com has mamo in 2nd after west genny

  26. HighSchoolHockey

Who is the “my” in myhockeyrankings.com?

  27. mamk

    highschoolhockey,

lol i do not know but i saw someone post the site there on the syracuse.com blog its interesting to see rankings as they do not mean much.

  28. In Defense of USHSHO.com Rankings

The USHSHO.com rankings are computed by an algorithm and they are based on match-ups and scores. Its really quite complicated to explain but the basic idea is that the computer figures out the rankings based which rankings best match the outcomes of the games that have actually been played. The match-ups matter. A 2-1 loss to a team that won most of its games by large margins will actually improve the ranking of all but the top teams. They are not baseless at all. It adjusts the rankings so as to absolutely minmize the number of games in which lower ranked teams defeated higher ranked teams.

  29. not really

The biggest problem is the scheduling component. In our section 1 for instance it had wins over league 4 teams at the same value as wins over league 1 teams. In addition losses to good teams are counted with the same strength as losses to bad teams. Its based on scores and probably the formulas would work real well in basketball but not hockey

  30. mymamoparentseating.com

    Do those have PSL’s?

  31. fifty five

nice job brenden….good win for mp
