Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley with Harold Gutmann

No hockey today

January
28

Both the Rye-Rye Town/Harrison game and the North Rockland-Yorktown game have been cancelled because of snow. No word yet on a makeup date. Looks like I’ll be watching Duke-Wake instead.

Hopefully the roads will be cleared tonight and I’ll be at White Plains-Clarkstown North tomorrow at Ebersole — which is looking like a sectional quarterfinal preview. White Plains has been doing just enough to win recently, and they’re still chugging along in second place in League 1. Meanwhile Clarkstown North is looking a little vulnerable. I like the Rams to win 6-3, but nothing would shock me at this point.

  1. Challenger

    Harold,

The Rams had a bad game against NR. It happens! They came out flat, and NR goalie played unbelievable! There has been no other game that has shown they are Vulnerable! Upstate they won both of their games, one 8-0 to a team that lost to West Genny 3-1. I dont think Vulnerable was the correct word!

  2. chsaaguy

Harold, any word if St. Thomas Moore at RCDS is postponed? (5PM)

  3. suff fan

To Challenger, CN was vulnerable against ETB. That game could have gone either way. and they didn’t kill Pelham. and they tied NR with a late CN goal. I think what Harold is saying is that after killing everyone by football scores at the beginning of the year, they have come down to earth a little. and he did pick CN to win 6-3, which is still a healthy margin of victory.

  4. mamk

congrats to the 4 section 1 teams in the state rankings

  5. Bauer Hour

RCDS game postponed today. Rescheduled for tomorrow…..

  6. Upsets - Possible explanation

I think the reason for so much unpredictability is that most teams lack depth. How many teams go three lines deep (where the third line is not all/mostly freshman) and more than 4 defenseman play significant minutes. I also think there is pretty solid goaltending in the section. Combine a hot goalie with either a top player or two missing, and or a top player being sick/nicked up/tired, and you get the unpredictablity we have seen. This gets compounded with some teams playing NHL like schedules of 3 games per week – especially now that we are in the middle of the season.

I also think as the season wears on, coaches can craft game plans to try to slow down teams that rely on 1 or 2 players for the majority of the scoring. Keeping a man high, matching lines and/or defenseman, playing more trapping schemes all help to keep the score down.

  7. chsaaguy

2nd of 3 power jv matchups in our area is tomorrow at murray’s, 7pm, chaminade at iona (the others were farrell at iona, 1 goal W by iona at murrays….3rd one is next thursday, st. anthony’s at iona, murray’s, 7pm)

    that is until playoffs start…

  8. RCDS

Any word on how their team is doing? They lost a bunch of kids early that didn’t return. Wonder why that happen and how the team recovered from it.

  9. JV?

Why all the JV talk? How about Modified? I hear Rye’s Modified is undefeated. Why are the CHSAA JV teams so afraid of them? Just kidding – but we might as well talk about the HVHL if we are going to focus on CHSAA JV.

  10. Boring!!!!

This blog topic is boring, So I decided to to make it a little more lively! Here we go!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m sorry to say this but this years top players have not been able to to match the excitment and results of last years tops players. Except for CN (Willows, McIndoe and Shuman) and maybe Pelham.

The players on the following teams below have not been able to step up and replace their stars of the past!

Rye definitely misses Eck and Rodgers
White Plains definitely misses Sigona and Rui
RT/H definitely misses Novick,McKinneys’s and Keagan
    Mamaroneck definitely misses Connor
    Yorktown definitely misses DiMaggio
Suffern definitely misses Salt and Ruthberg
    Mt Pleasant definitely misses Perlowitz
Greeley definitely misses Amedeo and Steinberg
and Iona definitely misses McCabe and King

Hopefully, this years stars start to pick it up alittle with the playoffs just arounfd the corner!

  11. How about Coach of the Year

What coach has done the best job this year?
What coach has overachieved with his team?
What coach has underachieved with his team?

  12. HighSchoolHockey

Thanks for the change of pace. I’m getting tired of chsaaguy throwing JV in the discussion all of the time… Geez, give it a rest. You even posted a question for the interview last night to Witz and Chiappareli about Iona JV. Do you have a kid on that team?

  13. HighSchoolHockey

Coach of the year… Suffern lost a lot of players from last year (six i think) so he’s done a good recovery job. Or maybe Witz. Always pulls a rabbit out of his hat.

How do you overachieve as a coach?

Underachieve… have to wait for the finals on that one.

  14. Second coming in Hockey

chsaaguy may have given birth to the entire lot of JV players. Hey it doesn’t make him a bad guy just a loving parent.
I heard the NHL is signing at least 6 of them next week ahead of them trying out for Varsity next year.

  15. chsaaguy

    highschoolhockey,
i did not post on the witz/chap discussion/interview

just letting you know where good local hockey is taking place. i’d rather watch a chaminade-iona jv game than league 4 and some of the rest of section 1.

  16. hockey87

    chsaaguy,
i am pretty sure that a SH/I game vs. LP is more exciting to watch then a JV hockey game, as both those teams will actually going to sectionals.

  17. chsaaguy

    hockey87,

SHI is an exception to league 4 (i remember Wes Cookingham playing on that team for a bit back in the day and they were fun to watch)..and yes, Lakeland Panas is decent this year…but the others?? Not looking to knock on any team, but its hard when people look for you to rip apart like a hound dog let loose to find a t-bone :P

listen, i’ll be the first to admit, the bottom half of chshl jv is a joke. but the top half is the opposite. the schools themselves even know that their jvs can make a game with their varsitys (st. anthony’s, chaminade, iona, farrell). its good hockey and i can guarantee you its worth the $3 at murray’s to watch lol

  18. topshelf17

Last years Chaminade JV team beat the vasity 7-3. 4 players played jr last year and they have 3 more that play jr now so that is correct

  19. hockey

    Harold,

I think we need a new poll. That one has been up a while.

  20. chshl jv

wow the jv games sound exciting!!! there will probably be up to 30 parents there…maybe 3 to 7 other supporters. should be crazy.

  21. chsaaguy

    topshelf, thank you

its not like there are a bunch of wannabe’s on the ice.

iona’s jv has all 3 of rich guberti’s westchester mariners midget programs represented (“A”, Under16 and Under18) and a bunch of other midget programs (bulldogs, express, vipers, pelham/sound shore, white plains) – don’t knock on these kids for just wanting to skate and get groomed to play better

  22. chsaaguy

    chshl jv
    exactly
so you can get a beautiful view of the ice from wherever you stand…you also just described a non-rivalry chshl game (when our 3 locals dont play each other, when chaminade and st. ant’s don’t play each other, all of farrell’s games lol)
cant get more enjoyable than that

nothing like watching a mariners under18 game at playland 11:45 in the morning on a sunday and you’ve got the whole left hand side of the ice to yourself. highest pace hockey you can see at that age in our area, just sit back and relax

  23. chsaaguy

    for those interested

2 manhattanville (currently ranked 10th nationally) home games this weekend, both against elmira (ranked 7th i think)

elmira should bring a crowd, rest of manhattanville’s games (outside those against lowly lebanon valley) have playoff implications

lots of people and lots of close hard fought games
nothing like watching 22-27 yr old canadians and europeans skate in your own backyard

    friday night at 7
    saturday at 3

    playland

  24. icehole

For coach of year—Iona JV coach. just kidding.
Have to include Scanlon of Stepinac in for doing it with an undermanned squad.
Mamaro should be undefeated with its talent. slightly underachieving.
Suffern’s system makes them an overachiever. They should have more losses.
    Also Chaminade =Underachiever

  25. stepinac

yes credit the results with so few bodies. On the negative side to be fair lets point this out. Lack of any kind of recruitment. Look at Iona and Fordham, they have recruited many more players and good players. Since the CHSHL teams recruit to get players Stepinac for a lack of better wording did a horrible job. Stpeinac has played well but only in the CHSHL they have not beaten any good teams outside the CHSHL. In the league they are only a game or so ahead its not like they are running away with it.

  26. topshelf17

    icehole

Scanlon has done a good job. He is smart enough to play a 1-4 most of the time 1-2-2 occasionally and smart enough to spring a guy here and there for a breakaway when his opponent breaks down which they all do eventually. A good coach would just up-tempo them and they couldn’t possibly win but everybody plays at their speed, crazy. As for Chaminade underachieving, they certainly are way, way undercoached. Try looking at Iona Prep as the bigger underachievers, should never lose to Step and I am sure their coaches would agree that they have underachieved big time.

  27. rcds

for those asking about rcds… its been a rough year. They are i think 2-7 and games are usually not close. Big hit loosing starting goalie (gluck), 3 seniors, and 5 juniors (are juniors this year)Turrin (now at milton), Klimchuck, Pesce, and Klein. ResultGame DetailsDate

Leading scorer Blatt only has 9 points. This is still very surprising because rcds has more skating talent then most public schools.

  28. interested

What does Fordham and Iona coaches offer players to go to those schools? I didn’t think that those schools gave money for hockey. How about RCDS? We’re new to this, at least will be next year, and would like to find out. Nothing against our district, but if we an get money for tuition, I’d be interested.

  29. interested

  30. recruit

What is the recruitment policy at the cathlic schools? Do they offer money for hockey? How about RCDS? We are new to this and would be interested in more info if anyone can help.

  31. to Rcds

Rcds has more skating talent than most public schools? that is very amusing. They got hammered by every public school team they played or scrimmaged this year. Rcds is struggling this year, admit and move on

  32. Stop now

10-9 win, sounds like modified score, and 4-4 tie against mamo jv is not impressive for iona jv. Remember best mamo sophomores are on varsity.

Tier 3 Mariner 16 u players, regular group not the new imports, are respectable. However, these are not Long Island Royal or New Jersey Avalanche caliber players we are talking about.

  33. Not South of the Canadian Border

    chsaaguy
On Manhattanville they have a defensemen AJ Mikkelsen #12 manages the back end with ease and controls the game very well. He is in his Junior year but I have him playing the pro game at a pretty high level as soon as he graduates.
The are a few CHL and ECHL franchises looking to find a way to roster him…one he is eligible contractually at the end of next season. He was a division 1 player smart with the puck.. Send some of your Iona kids to watch him.

  34. Manhattancille

Once people actually watch Manhattanville play they may be able to understand how high that d 3 level is, what it takes to play at that level, and how hard it is to break in.

  35. Taylor

People should go see Manhattanville play. They’re great. Its a very high level and for like $5 or something you can watch it from a seat that would cost $150 at an NHL game and its way easier to get to. I went to a Qunnipiac game. They have an awesome new arena. Depending on where you live its about an hour to hour and a half though. Great hockey though and great arena. No beer at either though. But I definitely second chsaaguy’s suggestion to go see Manhattanville this weekend at Playland. As for good hockey those of you who aren’t just fans of particular section 1 teams but just like good hockey should check out some of the CT teams. Trinity Catholic is the best(this year) and they play their home games at Terry Conners in Stamford. Greenwich HS, Darien HS, Ridgefield, and New Canaan are also very good. Any game between those teams is equal to Suffern vs Mamaroneck.

  36. N-4 CER

    FYI
    http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/high_school/2009/01/27/2009-01-27_catholic_hockey_commissioner_mike_mitche.html

    Pray for Mike

  37. right Taylor

Agree all the way. Its great hockey to watch. Especially for those who dream of playing college hockey. Go and watch. Check out the speed the skill and the amazing physicality of the play. Its certainly a reality check for anyone looking to play at that level.

  38. topshelf17

    N-4cer-

Thank you. Was wondering what happened. Very nice man. Sounds like a long road back. Hockey needs people like Mike and I’m sure he needs hockey too.

  39. My Hockey Team

To all who follow the CHSHL,

    website is up and running

    http://www.chshl.net/

  40. chsaaguy

Mike, our prayers are with you

    Taylor, agreed re CT

not south of the canadian border, you are right about mikkelsen. excellent player to learn from. he reminds me of mccabe, but at that much higher of a level.

  41. chsaaguy

    my hockey team,

thanks for posting that it is

i refrained, only b/c the guys running it are a few games behind on both V and JV (ie, look at the amount of GP for the varsity A division) and still need to catch up a bit..

  42. curious

    chsaaguy,

what’s the scenario in the CHSHL?

If Iona beats Stepinac, and Farrell loses out, who gets the higher seed out of Iona and Farrell? the series is tied 1-1-1 with the same amount of goals scored for both teams?

  43. TigerVet

I think that White Plains will surprise CN and could possible beat them tomorrow night at Ebersole. CN will not shake things up and show them anything different! WP will take a page from the NR playbook and keep the game a low scoring one.

  44. TigerVet

I think that CN will make an early exit from the playoffs. Surprise to most. So lets focus on some of the other programs in the JN, like Suffern, Pelham, WP and ETB to name a few. Their HS is clearly not the priority for a few of their star players. The Atlantic Youth Hockey League Playoffs conflict with the sectionals. What will they do? Here is the link
http://www.atlantic-district.org/tournaments_2007_8.php this should be interesting. I think that ETB and White Plains will advance further than most people predict right now.

  45. chsaaguy

    curious,

tie break in chshl goes in this succession

    most wins
    least losses
    head-to-head record
    least goals allowed
    most goals scored
    least penalty minutes

  46. chsaaguy

chshl web site now fully up-to-date

  47. chsaaguy

    interested,

sadly, but true…iona, fordham, rcds, etc. don’t give “athletic scholarships,” but find ways to get money (tuition knocked off) to the student/family

    ie,

the superb athlete at ip, jeff mack, the running back who had 7 TDs in the st. anthony’s championship game and one of coach vic’s star players on the varsity basketball team…is a native of mount vernon, was supposed to go to mount (barely got in due to poor performance on the general catholic entrance exam, forgot what its called, TACHS now or something?), but went to ip instead and is there on a full “academic ride” (supposedly laced ip’s entrance exam lol)

  48. Wait

    Tigervet,
White Plains is coming off a recent tie vs Sleepy Hollow-League 4 and a squeezed out win vs Ryetown Harrison-record 1-10. I’m not saying WP is a bad team, but if they’re expecting to beat or even play to the caliber of CN and make it a game there going to have to come ready to play and leave it all on the ice with little mistakes. 5 minutes of flat play by WP can cost them 5 quick goals against CN. CN’s highpowered offense can capitalize in the blink of an eye so WP better have every aspect of the game right to shut CN down.
    Prediction- CN 7 WP 3

  49. hi

What time is the White Plains vs. CN game?

PS I hope CHSAAAguys computer breaks.

  50. money issues

RCDS certainly gives full scholarships to some hockey players.

Admission prices – does Section 1 determine the admission price for hockey games? Why does every rink charge $3 – but Sporto charges $5? Any ideas?

  51. chsaaguy

    wp-cn 5:15 today

hi, oh please, not new news..

  52. hockeyguy

    hi,
The CN vs WP game is 5:15 at Ebersole

  53. chsaaguy

rcds game is at 5 today too

  54. perceptions

just some random thoughts from me. I have not been around much lately. Please stop with the Rye Country Day stuff. When they were good, which was a few years ago, we had Rcds over load every where. Now the team is very bad, worst ever in its history, the only local team they can beat is Harvey. So drop it until you become decent again. I agree with Chsaaguy that Iona Fordham and Rcds “find” money for high profile athletes. Those schools are running a business and need to be able to recruit full paying students. Financial aid “packages” are based on athletics for certain. Fact of life

  55. chsaaguy

perceptions, you basically said it one sentence

those schools’ sole job is to run a not-for-profit business.

now that archdiocese gave stepinac the boot (stepinac is now turning pure private, not tied to arch anymore), they are going to develop a board, increase tuition/fees BIG TIME, and start doing the same thing…

  56. CN-WP

    CN 8 WP 2
    Put it in the books

  57. perceptions

Just hope the education part of it does not suffer. The Arch schools were ahead of the public schools in the late 60`s and 70`s but since have taken a down turn as many have dropped their academic standards in order to keep going and get the tuitions to keep them strong

  58. hi

I think Iona Prep vs. White Plains would be a great game. I think they are about even in talent.

  59. Viola Rd

You hear alot of talk, especially from upstaters, that Section 1 & teams from downstate play a soft/weak schedule. Those up north think that if you play in the top league in Syracuse or Rochester your schedule is hands down much better than any section in the state…regardless of how good the teams are. This years polls have proved that to completely false. Section 1 has had 3 teams in the top 10 basically the whole year. Syracuse’s Sec 3 has 1 legitimate top 10 team in WGenny. Section 10 has 4 or 5 teams in their top division????? You see these other rankings that take into effect ‘strength of sched’ which is misleading. WGenny losing 2 has dropped Suff’s strength of sched when everyone knows WGenny is a top 2,3 or 4 team. Look at Suffern’s sched. One half of it’s games are against TOP State ranked opponents..50%. Mamo 2x..Pelham 2X..CN..W Genny, Rochester Aquinas, Lancaster (was a top 6 team when Suff played) 2x, Greece Thunder (undefeated, #1 in state) and through in Monroe Wood, White Plains. To me that is one hell of a schedule. This goes for Mamo & Pelham as well. They travel 3x upstate for tourneys. So for upstaters to knock scheds of downstate teams..they are only trying to deflect the fact that Downstate teams have chipped away at the stronghold upstaters have held for years. Suff may have a chance to knock off the only three undefeated teams in NYS remaining. They should play Greece in the finals of tourney this weekend..play CN in a couple of weeks and if they win sections..they would play Sec 10 Potsdam in 1st round playoff (provided They win remaining games). I believe Section 1 scares a lot of people upstate..and rightly so.

  60. great post Viola

So true. Mamaroneck Suffern and Pelham and Rye have killer schedules. I looked at Pelhams schedule on the Section 1 site. They have no easy wins none at all. Most games are vs. D 1 teams or state ranked teams. Give credit where its due.

  61. hockey

    Perceptions,
Academics have definitely suffered at places like Fordham, etc. You lower your academic standards to get more kids in and are forced to give scholarships to get kids in for athletic teams? High teacher turn over. The standards are way down from where they were, say in the 70’s, maybe 80’s, when the Catholic school’s did have a better program than public schools. Now, especially in Westchester, the schools are top notch and prepare kids much better for college. Shouldn’t that be the main focus for 90% of these kids? Most will not continue to play college hockey.

  62. ignorant

How anyone can say that a catholic school education is better then most public schools in rockland and westhester is just ignorant. Do you know where most teachers who don’t get a job in public schools go and get one? Catholic schools! I find it hard to believe that these catholic school teachers will take a huge pay cut because they want to teach in a catholic school. This is true at all levels of education but significantly more at the elementary schools. Lets get back to hockey talk, I would bet people care as much about the education level of the catholic schools as much as they care about their JV team!

  63. Taylor

Agreed except for the part about Suffern’s schedule looking weak because West Genny lost 2. West Genny is still 3rd in the state and a 9.81 on USHSHO.com. That’s part of Suffern’s average strength of schedule and it brings it up not down. Suffern’s strength of schedule is 7.2 by USHSHO.com. That’s high not low and that only includes the games they have played up to this point. It will go higher after CN (a 9.32) and their upstate games.

  64. My Hockey Team

    hi, are you high?

  65. LoHud Hockey

    money issues-

The admission prices are not set by the section except for the playoffs. During the regular season it is up to the rink/schools to set the prices. Certain rinks & schools charge differently. Some schools the kids pay more towards the team and at some they pay less. This is mainly to cover the very expensive cost of ice time (as opposed to say the basketball team who would play in the school gym and have no additional fees besides officials & security). At SOR, for example, out of the $5 you pay, $2.50 goes to the rink and $2.50 goes to the school to help with the exorbitant amount they spend on the hockey program. That being the case, if a team can reach a paid crowd of 300 at SOR, the ice time for that game is in essence free. Everything above that starts paying for officials, security, busses, and everything else the school pays towards hockey. If they fall below that 300, the extra money has to come either from the school budget or the parents of the kids on the team. I would guess the parents of the kids that play at rinks where the admission is less (or free) pay more for their kids to play than say a Suffern or North Rockland who are at SOR where they charge $5 a head.

  66. RCDS

You cant say that the only team they would beat is Harvey. They would certainly beat some teams from Leagues 3 and 4 and maybe some of the bottom teams in league 2. Most people have no idea the level of competition they play. The teams RCDS play regularly would run section 1..a la Brunswick, Vermont Academy, Worcester Academy, North Yarmouth..etc.

  67. education

If you are a Wetchester male student looking for a top academic day school institution as an alternative to your public high school option, the best choices are Hackley (no hockey), Rye Country Day and Brunswick (all boys). To say that the local Catholic schools resemble those above named schools is wrong. Not in the same league academically. But, those non Catholic private schools come with a $30,000 annual tuition and much, much higher admission requirements. The Catholic schools are fine for students seeking to avoid a troubled local public school, but most of Southern Westchester has public high schools that offer a better college preparatory program than the Catholic schools and for no tuition.

  68. recruit

    CHSAAGUY

So does that mean that Stepenac will now be able to recruit players too?
