Carbon monoxide leak at Ice Hutch

January
30

Matt Willows had all four goals and Jake Shuman had three assists as Clarkstown North defeated White Plains 4-1, but Tigers coach Howie Rubenstein gave the No. 1 star to someone else after yesterday’s game. You can read about it here. Also, today’s notebook has a note on Ossining, which has a big weekend ahead — New Rochelle tonight and Pawling tomorrow.

Speaking of the Ossining-New Rochelle game, it should be on as scheduled, 6 p.m. at the Ice Hutch, after the rink was evacuated last night for a carbon monoxide leak that sent one New Rochelle hockey player to the hospital.

Workers were completing repairs this morning on a heater that malfunctioned and sent carbon monoxide into rink as practice was winding down. Michael Jellen, 15, from New Rochelle had a headache on the ice and took some oxygen from firefighters who arrived about 8:20 p.m. after people reported a noxious odor.

His father took him to Lawrence Hospital Center in Bronxville for a blood test. The youth was feeling better this morning and plans to play tonight. His father, also Michael, wants assurances that the rink will be safe. The city’s Building Department and Fire Department will monitor the repairs and test the air to be sure it’s clean, Deputy Fire Chief Michael Corrado said.

The youth’s father also wanted an apology from a rink official who told the kid as he was inhaling oxygen that the official didn’t know what the problem was because the rink was well ventilated. Rink manager Ed Witz this morning said he didn’t know who made the comment but apologized for it, saying it was “uncalled for.”

In addition to shutting off all the heaters last night and allowing the outside air to ventilate the bubble, fire officials asked the Ice Hutch management to contact people who had used the rink earlier in the day to make sure they had not fallen ill from the carbon monoxide exposure.

First off, the bubble is a dump. Are they going to build another rink there or not?
Second, by law, doesnt every public building HAVE to be quipped with carbon monoxide detectors? If so, why were there no alarms going off?
Third, did any employee of ice hutch know about the leak?
I mean in this day and age, how the hell does something like a carbon monoxide leak go undetected in a public building? Just scary.
I am sure Ron Kuby is calling this kid and his parents as I type this.

  2. Bubble

I called 911 at 7:15 last night to report the smell. Why did it take so long for anyone to get there? Hope Michael is feeling better today.

  3. He wasnt the worse 1

Actually, one of New Rochelle’s 8th graders Mark Umbro actually did get carbon monoxide poison and was at the hospital till early in the morning today. He is OK but i dont know if he can play tonight.

  4. fire women

First of all you cannot smell CO. hope everyone is fine. I am sure the Ice Hutch is doing the best they can. They love hockey and are good people. This could happen to anyone or in anyones home.

  5. Bubble

You can ask anyone at the Ice Hutch last night (if they weren’t on the ice that is) if they smelled gas—it was fairly obvious there was a smell of gas – otherwise I wouldn’t have bothered making the call.

  6. hockey

Yes, Carbon Monoxide is odorless. Not sure what the noxious smell was. Hope they are all ok.

  7. county sewage

Smells? well the Ice Hutch is 20 feet away from a county sewage plant and on the other side there is a City asphalt plant right there too. Thats probably it. I stopped by the rink and they had fire and con ed checking it out. This could happen to anyones furnace.

  8. odor at the hutch

The Ice Hutch has had a bad smell for weeks, since Christmas. I am sure it will be fixed and the Ice Hutch Mgmnt will take all precautions to make it safe.

  9. Chuck Norris

Carbon monoxide just makes me stronger.

  10. CN

Surely this could happen in any ones home, but isn’t it a state regulation that public venues must have carbon monoxide alarms??

  11. Fireman Dan

This should NEVER happen in a public domain. And anyone who does not have working carbon monoxide detectors in their house on every floor is asking for death. You can not smell carbon monoxide. More people die of carbon monoxide poisoning in their homes than die in home fires. You die a peaceful death, you just never wake up.
People with forced hot air are a bit more at risk than baseboard heat from what I hear. Either way, every indoor fascility, public and private should have Carbon monoxide detectors.

  12. I am in the Hutch many times a week!

In looking at the building in general you would think the County would be doing some inspecting. Yes the place services lots of Hockey but imagine if mites or squirts were exposed to the same amount of Carbon Monoxide. We may have had a larger problem maybe a death. Yes I know its a great hockey institution! Yes it will be greatly defened at all costs and future posters will talk about the Closed New Roc ect. Blah Blah Blah. The place is a hockey staple I know how many are served here all of the good BUT! BUT BUT!
It is blatently obvious that it is running a bit lean. Accidents do happen but the place needs a bit of TLC.

  13. check the buildings too

The Ice Hutch evidently got the all clear from Con Ed and FD. The other rinks should be checked. Especially some the the buildings that are much more closed in
    It wouldn`t hurt

  14. Taylor

I have no inside knowledge about it but I do get the impression that they skimp on maintenance. I’ve complained about it here before, the glass in front of the stands desperately needs to be cleaned. That’s just one example.

  15. playoffs

how many teams make it to the playoffs? 12? and do #1 and #2 seeds get byes

  16. playoffs

does anyone know how many teams make it to the playoffs? also what seeds get byes

  17. Westchester Hockey

    playoffs

There is no limit on playoff qualifiers in Div 1 or 2. If you look at the Section I website, it explains under each league how you qualify (eg. all league on, league 2 if you win 50% of league games or 35% of all games). Byes are a result of how many teams qualify. You need to get down to 8 in quarter finals. If only 8 qualify, for example, no byes needed in Div 1, but if 12 qualify, 4 byes and 8 teams play in round one, with the 4 winners and 4 byes in round 2.

  18. LoHud Hockey

As many teams as qualify. The rules for qualification can be found on the standings page on the Section 1 Website at http://www.section1hockey.com/standings.html. Each of the four leagues have separate qualification rules. The number of teams that get byes depends on how many teams qualify. In D1 there are 16 teams overall so it is possible (although not probable) that no one recieves a bye. In D2, there are only 13 teams so at bare minimum, the top three seeds (Pelham, Rye, & JJCR in whatever order) all will recieve byes.

  19. Carbon Bubble Place

The Ice Hutch needs a overhaul. If it wasn’t run so cheaply maybe they would fix the boards, glass and the dip near the zamboni door. The smell comes and goes, they are supposed to have a alarm. No idea how long the leak has been going on. Interesting that people on the blog seem to try covering it up. It’s all fun and games till your kid spends the night at the hospital or worst.

  20. ???

    taylor,
this was a serious situation that was handled by the rink but could happen anywhere unfortunately. for you to use this as an opportunity to blog about the “dirty glass” is ridiculous but be assured if you show up for the next alumni game there will be a bottle of windex waiting for you.

  21. Fan

Both New Ro players who went to hospital had elevated blood levels of carbon monoxide. Those are the 2 who went to the hospital because of symptoms. Glad everyone OK. No telling how many really had elevated levels.
If fire depart came because of CO alarms then why didn’t the rink get evacuated once alarm sounded while awaiting fire department?

  22. suffern vs lancaster

suffern won 4 to 3 in a shootout against lancaaster tonight. Goals were scored by Hiller(2) and mccarron. The shootout goals were scored by jaeger and hiller. suffern won 2 to 1 in the shootout

  23. Government

Blame the city of Mt Vernon for holding up the new rink for the last five years

  24. new ro

Witz apologized to New ro before their game, like it was his fault. for his sake its just good it was us and not Rye. Can you imagine all the idiots who would have jokingly refered to it as an attempt to get rid of Rye. But based on how badly we played tonight, the fact that one of those players was our only goal scorer, not Prunesti or Martignetti, leaves one to want to make a joke about CO being good, but i wont do it because some people might get offended. Maybe I’ll check with Umbro and see if its cool.

  25. Fan

If Witz runs the rink which he does then he should apologize. Good for him for being stand up guy. Remember people could of died. If that happen lawyers would be talking about negligence and lack of proper maintenance at the Ice Hutch. Better make those alarms louder and set to go off faster.

  26. Good job

They had a problem, a problem that could happen to anyones home or business, they fixed it almost immediately, the guy who runs the place went right into New ros locker the next minute the team is there and he walked out of his owns team practice to do it. I think they did the best they could under the circumstances. Oh and when IH first opened our New Ro teams were the other major tenanr until we moved to New Roc when it opened. I distinctly remember when it was being built that the IH people wanted a building but the City of Mt Vernon refused saying it had to be a temporary situation and thats why its a bubble. Mt Vernon was not sure if they were going to need that area when they built the target so they told the IH people that the rink could not be a permanent structure. That bubble was originally only supposed to be up 6 months a year. When our rink in New Ro closed I doubted that we would even have a team as it is obvious that Ice Hutch is completely subscribed but Toz`s relationship with the rink manager got us more ice than we thought.

  27. sec1 fan

The current state of the building is irrelevant in this situation. Circumstances beyond Witz’s control have caused this to happen. He doesn’t control the money that gets pumped back into the place. This could have happened anywhere, it was a faulty heater. I agree the bubble needs a facelift, but this was not an issue of negligence.

  28. give it a rest

I think its done and over. I was there for the ETB family night and it was a great fun atmosphere. Building was fine I wish we had an Ice Hutch in Eastchester
