Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley with Harold Gutmann

Friday schedule

January
30

A lot going on in the past 24 hours, from state executive meetings to Section 1 realignment to power rankings to poisonous gas, so if you haven’t checked out the blog lately don’t forget to scroll down. There’s also a lot of teams in action today.

The doubleheader at the Ice Hutch should be interesting — Ossining-New Rochelle in a battle of one-loss teams in League 3, and ETB-Mount Pleasant, with the Ice Cats coming off their biggest win of the season. The quadruple-header at Brewster is Lakeland/Panas-Kennedy/PV, Brewster-Clarkstown North, Mahopac-John Jay and Carmel-Byram Hills. Yorktown visits Newburgh, a team is beat 3-2 earlier this season, and Suffern is up at Lancaster, a team it beat 4-2 earlier this season. And Fordham Prep (12 points) visits Chaminade (11 points), with the winner putting itself in really good playoff position.

I’ll be at Ossining-New Ro (I have to go back to the office so I can’t stay for ETB-MP, unfortunately). Please post all the scoring updates you have.

  2. CN II

well we are just all bustin our buttons over that

  3. LoHud Hockey

I normally wouldn’t post things on two separate blog topics, but since Harold’s been pretty busy at the computer today with 4 new topics, I felt like this would get lost in the shuffle and I think it’s an important one in regards to the re-alignment, so here goes…

There’s a very good reason why this happened, and it will get glossed over by most reading Harold’s intro to this topic, so I will point it out. The vote was 59-16. That means that 75 AD’s in the section voted on it. There are 29 hockey teams in Section 1. When you factor in mergers, there are 40 schools with a hockey program. Now, assuming all 40 of those AD’s showed up for this vote (which may be a strecth to assume), that means that you had 35 AD’s voting on this who don’t have hockey in their school and don’t give a flying you-know-what about it!!!!

Now the proposal on the floor was for this to happen with all sports except football. If they were not open to alternate proposals, then there was no way to get an exception for hockey because no one would listen. If they were open to alternate proposals, then I think the non-hockey schools being automatic no’s was the overriding factor in this getting shot down. A non-hockey school sees Proposal A with an exception for only football and Proposal B which is identical but also provides an exception for hockey and sees no difference, so why waste his time reviewing the alternative.

Unless the total number of votes between the yea’s and the nay’s adds up to 40 or less, then the vote was taken unfairly and should be re-done. Why should the AD for say Nanuet High School have a say in divisional alignments for hockey???? And even worse, remember Duchess County where they have club hockey (except for Pawling) is in Section 1. Those AD’s have a say in the matter, too, and they will undoubtedly look at it as “Our school doesn’t even sponsor the hockey program and it is doing just fine, so if you don’t like it, let your team go club like us.” So the world seems to be against us.

Plus, you have the issue (which has been brought up 10 times already on this topic alone), who the heck thought that Rye is near Fox Lane?? How could you claim these are divisional alignments and still put Rye in with FL, JJCR, & SNS??? Maybe it makes more sense when you see all the schools (not just the hockey ones) in each conference, but for hockey it certainly doesn’t make sense. Especially when you take into account that your school is not your home playing field like it is in every other sport. If they are going to go with this plan, they need to move SHI to Conference IV since they play at SOR, move Rye & RTH to Conference II to take their spot, then bump Ossining to Conference III so that the two teams that play out of WSA (Ossining & MtP) are together rather than both being in separate leagues where everyone else plays out of Brewster.

  4. Taylor

I predict Ossining defeats NewRo. I’ll say 5-3.

  5. Westchester Hockey

    LoHud Hockey

Very logical comments, but unfortunately the rulesmakers are probably not.

  6. ACHA

I was called on in one of the lasts posts for my imput…As I have said before I will not argue who is better anymore ACHA D.1 or NCAA,

The new topic a post or two ago was people being confused on how the U18 USA team can beat NCAA D. 1 teams and lose to NCAA D. 3 teams.

My input – The talent level isn’t drastically different between NCAA D. 1 and NCAA D. 3 and ACHA D. 1 club. It is different, of course for the most part NCAA D. 1 is better, and even the worst NCAA D. 1 teams would destroy NCAA D. 3 teams like Salve Regina, or ACHA D. 1 Club teams like Canton(as much as I love Canton, sorry). However, how much worse would your run of mill NCAA D. 1 team like say Ferris State beat NCAA D. 3 Salve Regina….would they beat them any worse than say NCAA D. 3 Bowdoin did 10-2, or ACHA Penn State did 8-0?? No, they wouldn’t.

I would say there is a bigger difference between the top NCAA D. 3 teams/top ACHA D. 1 teams vs. the bottom of both leagues, than there is NCAA D. 1 vs. the top end NCAA D. 3 and ACHA D. 1.

If teams like Michigan State had to constantly play teams like Utica, Bowdoin, Babson, Penn State, U. of Rhode Island, etc. Michigan State would win, but it wouldn’t be by over 10 goals, they would win by 5 with a shot total of about 50-20.

  7. icehole

Is any game on VC this weekend?

  8. hockey

Anyone know when the NY State Division 2 Playoffs begin? Are there set dates and locations?

  9. Viola Rd

anyone know if Suffern plays at 5pm or 7pm in Liverpool tourney? Any scores?

  10. Suffern Fan

    Suffern plays at 7

  11. Taylor

Has anyone ever seen a St Thomas Aquinas college game? They play their home games at the Palisades mall. Just wondering how good it is. They have game tonight in fact, 7:15pm.

  12. ???

    ACHA,

good job and you are 100% correct with your statements. i am fortunate to be able to see a lot of the ACHA teams and you are right on the mark.

  13. CN Fan

anyone have a CN-Brewster score? thanks!

  14. Section 1 fan

Anyone have any score on Suffern?

  15. ACHA

St. Thomas Aquinas is equivalent to a Junior “C” team. I would guess if the Ramapo Junior Saints “B” were to play them, the Saints would win by about 5 or 6 goals.

  16. scarsdale

any score on northrockland vs mt. pleasant

  17. STAC/Canton

STAC club is Division 3 Club and their record is not so good but there are some local kids on this team. Canton in their first year in Division I Club is 25th in the nation. This ACHA club team has mostly New Yorkers (including a couple of local players) on the roster (only one Canadian) and have beaten lower level NCAA Division III teams. NCAA Division I New York teams like Plattsburgh and Division III teams like Oswego have a roster of mostly Canadians. The Oswego club team, however, is full of New Yorkers. So what is left for the local kids—to try to make a club team and just enjoy playing hockey as long as you can.

  18. update

Mt. Pleasant up 4-2 after 1
Yarrobino has 3 for Mt. Pleasant

  19. ACHA

Canton is no longer #25, even though they haven’t lossed a game since their last rankings, they have been playing horrible (we are relatively speaking now) teams, so they have dropped with no fault of their own. This year they have a very weak schedule, I expect them to have a much better schedule next year, and still promote this school as an up and coming school for our section one kids to consider. Coach is a good guy too. North Grad Kevin Moro is one of only 6 Canton players to dress for every game this year.

  20. League 3 Fan

Who won the New Ro vs. Ossining game?

  21. cn

    north 8 brewster 0

    willows 6 points

  22. Score

Any word from Coney Island on Fordham Chaminade?

  23. all or nothing

Wanted to know why CN grad R.Willows is no longer on Canton roster, anyone know.
Just a tidbit for locals on good ACHA teams,Chris Wynne of Suffern is a main player and having a very good season for D2 power Wagner College who are ranked 1st in the South East Region at this time.

  24. CN

    GO NORTH :) north rocks!

  25. Harold Gutmann

Here’s what he have so far:
Lakeland/Panas 5, Kennedy/Putnam Valley 4, OT: At Brewster Ice Arena, Nick Belger (two goals, one assist) scored the winner with 1:29 left in overtime for the Rebels. Robert Caffrey (two goals and two assists) tied the game with a tenth of second left in regulation for Lakeland/Panas. Sean Sullivan had a hat trick for Kennedy/Putnam Valley. Luke Martin made 40 saves.
Ossining 4, New Rochelle 1: At the Ice Hutch in Mount Vernon, Jake Towers had two goals and an assist and teammate Joe Riley had 21 saves. Mark Umbro scored off an assist from goalie Danny Feliu for the Hugeunots.
Clarkstown North 8, Brewster 0: At Brewster Ice Arena, Matt Willows had five goals and one assist and Jake Shuman had three goals and four assists. Chris McIndoe made 20 saves for the shutout.

  26. Mt pleasant

    Etb 6 Mt Pleasant 5 after 2

  27. chsaaguy

we’re gonna have to wait for topshelf to get back (he’s staying for both games)

fordham-chaminade should be in the middle of the 3rd by now…

  28. Suffern

i dont think that STAC is playing Cantons D1 Club team…prob there D3 team which suffern star Mike Conklin plays for

  29. Canton

I know Moro is playing lots of minutes up at Canton and he has pretty good stats too…definetely an important member of that team… way to go Kev! Another Clarkstown North grad doing well at the college level!

  30. ACHA

No, no, no, Suffern, STAC would not be able to compete with anyone close to Canton’s caliber. Trust me, Canton would beat STAC by at least 20 goals AT LEAST!!! STAC has lost to teams in their own league by more than 10, Canton or Wynnes Wagner team wouldn’t be a game at all. No disrespect to STAC, but its apples and oranges here, no comparison

  31. scarsdale

    etb 9 mt. pleasant 6

  32. chsaaguy

remember to check this website near midnight for the st. anthony’s/farrell score/recap…they’re usually pretty fast…

  33. west of the river

    Suffern update?

  34. Suffern

I heard Suffern won in a shootout, not sure of the score. Greece beat Liverpool 2-0 so they’ll play them tomorrow at 3.

  35. Suffern

suffern won 4-3 in a shootout…suffern led 3-1 going into 3rd…lancaster tied it at 3…jaeger and hiller scored in the shootout suffern won the shootout 2-1

  36. Harold Gutmann

Suffern 3, Lancaster 3, (Suffern won shootout 2-1): In the first round of the Liverpool Tournament, Zac Hiller had two goals and an assist and Greg McCarron had a goal and an assist. Jake Jaeger and Hiller scored in the shootout. Suffern will play Grecce-Athena, the top-ranked team in the state, tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the final.

  37. League 4 Hockey Mom

    LoHud Hockey,
I agree totally with your assessment of these proposed new league alignments. But I am confused about Proposal B… was this an actual proposal that was put before the AD’s? What are the terms of Proposal B?

Is it too late to ask them to reconsider? If they are considering making exceptions for sports that have few participants (like skiing and gymnastics), then do you think they will still consider an exception for hockey? Also, I would think that other sports that compete in off campus locations (like bowling, skiing, golf, maybe swimming) are in a similar boat, in that they are geographically limited by the location of their venues.

What do you think our best course of action is at this point? What should we be asking our AD’s for?

  38. Westchester Hockey

    Harold

Was the ETB 9-6 score a final? What did Hagen do in the game?

  39. ,,,,,,

    Pac 8 JJ 5

  40. Taylor

I think is Greece Athena/Greece Odyssey. There are 4 high schools in Greece, Athena, Odyssey, Arcadia and Olympia.

  41. Harold Gutmann

Mahopac 8, John Jay 5: At Brewster Ice Arena, Chris Mastocola had two goals and four assists for Mahopac. Tyler Perrelle had a hat trick. Dave Rofosky had a goal and two assists for John Jay. Alex Wohl added two goals.

I was called back to the office so I couldn’t stay for ETB. Great scene with all three mascots on the ice (Tiger, Bronco and Eagle). Haven’t heard an official score yet.

  42. Mt. Pleasant

    ETB 10- Mt. Pleasant 6

    Sherding 4 goals, Hagen 3

  43. LoHud Hockey

I don’t know if there was a second proposal on the table or not. I think if the ADs were willing to look at alternate solutions, John Orlando would have found a way to get one in front of them. I don’t know whether or not that happened, though. My point in bringing up “proposal b” is that if there was one on the table and the only difference was that it made an exception for hockey, the ADs at non-hockey playing schools (which outnumbers the ADs at hockey playing schools) probably would look at reviewing it as a waste of time and not consider it because it doesn’t affect them. This is precisely why it bugs the s—- out of me that there were at bare minimum 35 votes from ADs at non-hockey schools factored into the decision on what to do with hockey (even more if not all 40 hockey school ADs showed up).

  44. LoHud Hockey

There are four schools in greece. They commprise two teams. Greece lightning and greece thunder. Athena and oddesy are one team and olympia and arcadia are the other. I cannot remember which is lightning and which is thunder.

  45. etb

    hagen 6 goals correction

  46. Mt. Pleasant

Hagen did not have 6. Sherding had 4 and other kids scored.

  47. fanotgame

I remember Rye playing (and beating) the Greece lightning version up at the Rome Free Academy tournament two years ago. They had bolts on their jerseys like NHL’s Tampa Bay and the fans chanted “Greece…....Lightning”.

  48. etb

ETB Wins 10-6 Sherding 4 goals over Mt. Plesent

  49. jb

Pac has two great players in Perelle and Mastrocola, if they get going Pac could make some noise in the playoffs. Pacs goalie is also very good.

  50. Hockey Fan

Good win for Oss 4-1 over New Ro. Riley solid again in net with 21 saves. Oss-Pawling tomorrow night at WSA should be another good one.

  51. topshelf

    cham 4 fordham 1

  52. hshockeyfan

JJ should have won that game 4-2 if the JJ goalie stopped anything. What were the shots?

  53. ETB

sherding had 4 but hagen didnt have 6…i think 1 or 2

  54. ivan drago

    hagen had all 10 goals

  55. st ants

    st ants 5 farrell 3

  56. Icedad

    st ants—
can you give us any details? Game ever close? Who scored for Friars? Also just curious, does your new student center
    have a rink?

  57. st ants

    Icedad

ST ants lead 4-0 farrell scored 3 in about 2 and a half minutes to make it close then st ants iced it with an empty netter
Pascalli had 2 Possillico had 2 and sheehan had 1

and about the student center no it doesnt have a rink i wish though

  58. Rams - Friars

Rams hot streak stops dead in it’s tracks. Baffling how this team goes from beating Iona and looking invicible to losing handily to the Friars. Only team that is hot now is St. Ants and there league games are done. Due to that one forfeit their fate is in others hands now. What a shame. Hopefully they learn for next year.

  59. brunos brother

sherding passed the puck like pancake when he could…hagan finished like he should with 4 and ciotti skated like paul coffey..watch out for etb…Expecting The Best!!!!

  60. ETB

Goals From ETB vs. Mt pleasant Assists
    Sherding 4 Sherding 2
    Hagen 4 Palfrey 1
    Bellotti 1 Ciotti 2
Lilly 1- from half ice Belloti 1

  61. ETB-MP

In the beginning of the game ETB came out of the locker room and played horrific. I guess it was all the pregame hype and talk about how MT. Pleasant isn’t good. They let up 4 goals in the first on three mistakes that should not have gone in. The second period was dominated by ETB with MT. Pleasant only getting 1 goal. And the Third period showed ETB style hockey with the scoring of another four and only letting up 1. ETB was clearly the better team after the First period mishap.

  62. League 3

The Ossining goalie played fine yesterday but the credit really belongs to Ossinings D. Riley really didn’t need to make any good saves. Just as much credit should go to New Ro’s 1st line for being a non factor. The goalie had more points than they did. The shot count didn’t accurately portray the game, cause Ossining strongly out-chanced New Ro. But I have been very impressed with what Ossining has been able to do even after losing both McHugh and Dorgan, plus the injury to Fiella. Somebody definately deserves credit because I honestly believed New Ro has a lot more talent on their team but Ossining just looked like a much better team.

  63. No D

I stayed after the Ossining game to watch. You must be kidding. You can blame anything you want for ETB bad play in the first but I suggest that they should find some defense. ETB was out played in the first in what you call a mishap. There forwards are great but no d or goal tending to say the least.

  64. hockeyfan

ETB’s goaltending was terrible. Their goalie was probably just starting because it was senior night and he is a senior. If the freshman ruppel had played it probably would have been 10-3. ETB also started playing their weaker players at about 8 minutes left in the game. ETB could’ve put up more but they didn’t. ETB does this every game and CN should learn from them.

  65. At The Game

John Jay could of now one a bunch of league games if their goalie could just make the routine saves.

  66. DEVS FAN

Not for nothing Suffern but as far as M.Conklin(STAR) at S uny Canton their d3 team is like playing house league. The star word should be no where near him.

  67. icecatzzzz

etb first liners were still on the ice with just a few minutes left, only not together as one line but they were still trying to score. both teams were pretty sloppy most of the game. good job MP, kept it close till the third, it could have gone either way. MP hustled the whole game including the forwards in their own end, not something you can say about the etb first line. they are about one thing scoring goals. no back check no hustle in their own end. we worked hard the whole game at both ends like a real team

  68. break the record

i believe that the older willows is off the canton roster becasue he has a major seperated shoulder and is getting surgery.

  69. Skates

    Hey League 3

I think you were tuned into the wrong channel! You were right about a couple of things—The Ossining D played great and Faiella is missed. Just for the record, Riley did make some great saves. You just can’t handle the fact that New Ro lost. We all have our turn. Welcome to the HOCKEY REVOLUTION!! Let’s go O!

  70. League 3

Wow, I thought what i said was a huge compliment to Ossining especially their defence. I also said they were a better team. I meant to write did not need to make many good saves, not any good saves. I just Dan’s saves were much more difficult than the ones he had to make. But you got to chill out and learn to read. If that post upset you you are obviously very insecure for some reason.
