Ice hockey in the Lower Hudson Valley with Harold Gutmann

Power rankings

January
30

The top five didn’t change, but the next five did

1. Mamaroneck (13-2-1): Goalie Luke Glaser has given up just 11 goals in his last 10 games, including back-to-back shutouts over Cortland and Pelham.

2. Suffern (13-2-1): The Mounties bounced back from their first league loss in a big way, defeated Rye Town/Harrison 10-0 and Monroe-Woodbury 3-1.

3. Clarkstown North (16-0-1): The Rams have one game left against a League 1 team — they face Suffern on Feb. 13.

4. Pelham (11-6): The top line of Marc Flory, Andrew Emerson and Mike Mamone have scored 51 of the Pelicans’ 58 goals.

5. Stepinac (10-8-1): Stepinac is in the best position of any team in the CHSHL — it has the most games left (three) and the most points (15). The Crusaders (7-4-1) are two points ahead of Iona Prep (6-7-1) and three ahead of Fordham Prep (6-7).

6Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville (5-2): At full strength, they’re a real sleeper pick in Division I.

7. White Plains (9-6-2): Next five games all against top 10 teams: Mamaroneck, Pelham, Suffern, Rye and Scarsdale.

8. Scarsdale (10-4-1): I wish they didn’t lose to John Jay, but still have to give them credit for recent winning streak.

9. North Rockland (9-4-1): Loss to Mount Pleasant was a shocker, and now two straight league losses have them in a three-way tie for third in League 2.

t10. Rye (7-8): Could get above .500 in League 1 with a win over RTH Monday.

t10. Iona Prep (11-8-1): Can a team this talented really miss the playoffs entirely?

Also receiving votes: Fordham Prep (8-10), Ossining (12-1-1), New Rochelle (10-2-1), Sleepy Hollow/Irvington (8-1-2), Somers/North Salem (10-6)

    chsaaguy

looking forward to the doubleheader tonight.Any change in your predictions ? The St Ants boys sound like they are hungry

  3. chsaaguy

    topshelf,

    i’m sticking with a fordham-chaminade tie and a st. ant’s win by 3

  4. topshelf

    chsaa

I guess win or lose Cham and Fordham will be rooting for Farrell and Step but I can’t imagine Step beating Ioma in a game they have to have. I’m sure they will play up-tempo and should wear them down.

  5. topshelf

    FYI publics….

Article in Newsday today quotes state athletic association president Pat Pizzarelli as saying all these proposals for realignment, games played, out of state games, etc are expected to be hotly debated so contact your A.D.’s and let them know how you feel.

  6. Mountie Style

top games of the weekend harold? i know suffern has a huge tournament upstate with a possible 1 Greece matchup looming. what else is going on around section 1

  7. chsaaguy

the doubleheader at ice hutch tonight should be more than decent
-a good new ro against an up and coming ossining
-surprising W mount pleasant against etb

on saturday, ossining-pawling at elmsford should be good…you’ve also got white plains at mamo at that night

  8. chsaaguy

    elmira at manhattanville, playland, 7

go if you want to watch high pro level hockey

  9. huh?

Manhattanville is high College Hockey Division 3 level not high pro level hockey. There is a big difference.

  10. chsaaguy

    huh,
    ever watch a manhattanville game?
d2/3 is interchangeable with d1, reputable d2/3 programs (manhattanville, elmira, middlebury, norwich, babson, plattsburgh, etc) send players to pro leagues (echl, chl, ihl, europe, etc.) all the time
instead of playing pro for $30-40K/year, these guys are getting a free ed. and playing the same competition

  11. fanotgame

Harold- Like to see that you gave Scarsdale some props and didn’t punnish them too much for the non league disappointments vs. Jay and Fieldston. But, I am having a hard time with the North Rockland ranking. I think O’Conner and Meany are very good. And the goalie sounds like he stood on his head in the North game. But, we are in the last few weeks of the regular season and their only big win was against a depleted ETB team. And they have a recent bad loss to PWBV. Not sure that is top 10 material. They do have some games down the stretch against the top half of their League Two. Lets see how those go. ETB also a suspect pick, if only because they have played so few games. The Eagles seem to be getting a lot of credit for their potential as opposed to their actual record. They also have just one big win, a non league effort vs. WP. Sometimes those non league matches are not all that dispositive as coaches have differing agendas (including increased playing time for the back portion of the bench). Lets see how ETB does down the stretch vs. the top 1/2 of their league Two.

This is not sour grapes for my Garnets current ranking. They have dug a hole for themselves coughing up late leads and eventually losing to Scarsdale and Pac and not bringing their A game vs. Suffern either time. Need to show improvement down the stretch. They get the chance with 8 games between Feb 1 and Feb 20. By the way, Rye’s “home” match with RTH (snowed out earlier this week) will be Friday Feb 13 at the Ice Hutch (no Playland ice available, I guess). That will conclude a 3 games in 3 nite stretch with Pelham on Wed, WP on Thurs and RTH on Fri. Garnets also scheduled Monroe Woodbury for Wed Feb 18 at Playland.

  12. Know nothing

CHSAAGUY, you know absolutely NOTHING. There isn’t anybody playing D3 getting a free education unless it is for academics. We will have to go through the same stupid argument that has been done on here a 100X, about the top D2 teams compared to the bottom D1 teams as we do with the top AA teams with Bottom AAA teams or top League 2 teams with bottom League 1 teams. I have never read more stupid comments by one person as I have you. And to say D3 (there are only a handful of D2 teams, so to even mention them is stupid) are interchangable with D1 teams just might be the dumbest thing you have written on here.

  13. My Hockey Team

fanotgame, does that make 24 games for Rye?

  14. Rankster

Who give a flying damn about the rankings. The only thing that matters is who wins the section. Rankings are simply ridiculous and cause unwarranted pent up emotional outbursts.

Face the facts, CN, Mam and Suffern are the class of the Section, no one is going to touch these 3 and its a lock that 2 of the 3 will be at West Point. Could be any of the 3.

And no one cares about the Catholic league. No one.

  15. Rankster

and Pelham will walk to the states in D2

  16. know something

know nothing actually thinks these kids pay a full tuition at manhattanville lol

  17. Know nothing

maybe not, but aren’t getting a free ride

  18. chsaaguy

    know nothing,

why the screaming and yelling? lol
just making a statement that d2/3 is just as high-paced and competitive as most of d1
yes, your north dakota’s, michigan’s, bc’s, bu’s, minnesota’s, maine’s, etc. will always be in a class amongst themselves, but believe me, some of the d3s i mentioned above can easily be in a game with all of atlantic hockey and cha, bowling green, lake superior, merrimack, the alaska schools and half the ecac

  19. chsaaguy

shouldn’t have said “free ed.”, rather “good ed.”

but, yes, none of those kids are paying full expenses..

  20. chsaaguy

people care about the catholic league. people.

  21. chsaaguy

    waaaaahhhhhhh :*(

  22. topshelf

    chsaa

    THAT is absolute FACT

  23. chsaaguy

    lol

  24. topshelf

Top D3 could give all of them a game. FACT

  25. chsaaguy

know nothing, looks like YOU might be the one not making sense

  26. chsaaguy

    topshelf,

manhattanville, plattsburgh, st. norbert, wisconsin-superior, middlebury, elmira, adrian, norwich, oswego, etc.

    agreed

  27. sec1 fan

It’s far from pro hockey…. That was his original point, and hes right.

  28. chsaaguy

    topshelf,

know nothing forgets that a dozen out of 300 draft picks a year come out of u.s. colleges lol

  29. KORN

Clarkstown North has proven beyond a doubt that they are one of the top 3 teams in section 1. Which makes getting the #1 seed even more important. The #2 seed will play CN in the semi’s.
I know white Plains beat a depleted Mamk team, but I think that Mamk will smoke White Plains this weekend for revenge. If WP can tie or beat Mamk, then I will concede WP is a threat.
I am hoping Mamk and Suffern run the table so that their Feb. 20th game at SOR is a significant game for the #1 seed. Neither team wants to play a really tough game verse a Dangerous CN team.

  30. topshelf

The last thing Clarkson and St Lawrence want to do is lose to Plattsburgh or Elmira, same for UVM to Norwich and Middlebury thats why they schedule McGill or some other Canadian pushover at the beginning of the season, not because of lack of competition

  31. Know nothing

Yes, and like I wrote, the top Midget AA teams can give some of the AAA teams a game, and in section 1 many of the top league 2 and 3 teams can give the bottom of league 1 teams a game. I would also bet you could find some house league teams in Minnesota that could beat our AA or even AAA pee-wee teams. It does not mean they are interchangable. There has also been questions as to top NCAA football teams (Miami, several years ago) that could give teams like detroit lions a good football game. This is just common sense but to say the leagues are interchangable is just wrong.

  32. chsaaguy

    sec1 fan,

    far from nhl hockey, yes

on par with ahl/echl = possibly

better than ihl, chl, sphl, etc.? = yes

    that was my point

  33. chsaaguy

know nothing, never any intentions to start a fight

just wanted to reflect the above

  34. topshelf

    For those nonbelevers…

check the u18 ntdp schedule, very competitive with all top d1 teams and won the Babson invitational against d3 schools ( good game with mahattanville ) that could have gone either way

  35. topshelf

sorry for the spelling, i am busy lol

  36. chsaaguy

    http://www.usahockey.com/USANTDP/default.aspx?NAV=AF_01_01&ID=233680

  37. KORN

    By the way,
yesterdays internet showing of CN verse WP was a tough watch. Were there some glitches to be worked out? Any chance of someone doing play by play on these?

  38. Know nothing

topshelf, you seem to forget that many d3 and even d1 players are 19 and 20 year old freshman, so can top D3 (ages 19-24)schools beat the best UNDER 18 year olds in the US? yes. Many of the D3 schools have kids from canada and europe who are typically better then US teenagers. That does not support your argument at all.

  39. chsaaguy

    topshelf,

    good point bringing u18 up.

adrian, last year’s cindarella (didn’t lose a game and didn’t get invited to ncaa tourney mainly due to its weak conference, even though it played more nonconference games than conference games) just beat the u18 5-4

  40. chsaaguy

    know nothing,

other side of argument = under 18 is a handpicked roster of the best that the roster could entail being homeschooled and your job in life is to play (half of u18 gets drafted in a given year’s draft year-over-year)

  41. Know nothing

yes true. I still don’t think that hand picked 17 year olds in the US can beat top D3 teams made up of many teams made up of 20 year olds from canada etc. Take the Daniels twins for example, drafted but still sent to play Jr. hockey as they are not ready for D1. Big differnce between 18 years old and 20 ( in most cases)

  42. Al Bundy

Thanks for the NTDP link. I saw that on the 17U team is Kevin Clare of New Rochelle and he is intended for the University of Michigan. I was not aware of this (I probably missed it). That is a great job!

  43. chsaaguy

so you could also look at it that u18 (half current/future nhl draft picks) just lost to a d3 of players never getting an nhl look

besides, in high level hockey, once you’re 16, you basically know what level you’re at

u18s and 22yr old freshmen at adrian/manhattanville, lets be serious, the u18s are faster, smarter and overall better hockey players

  44. chsaaguy

    know nothing,
    agreed

    al bundy,
was posted a couple of months ago
    congrats to clare and shattenkirk!

  45. Not South of the Canadian Border

Actually many top D3 teams compete at the level of midrange D1 teams. Ever since True Freshman have become a rarity you are seeing some pretty talent Men playing D3 hockey.
D3 does not offer formal money in terms of Scholarships but there is some skirting by work study payments. Currently there are hosts of paid and non paid Central Hockey league,ECHL and other scouts looking at players in D3 programs so the level of the game is close to D1.
There are no Pro Hockey players playing hockey for 30-40K a year unless they are under some form of an NHL agreement. CHL,ECHL, IHL average salary 400-600 per week as most teams carry 18-20 guys and there is a weekly cap around 11,000 per week per team.
The Souring Eagles Elmira has a great squad and so does Manhattanville. Chock full of Western Canadian Junior and OHL players who were stars on their rosters but decided on a college degree as maybe NHL not in the cards just yet.
In addition Manhattanville has some Sweeds that were on the National team squads. The game is a bit tight becasue defense rules and most goals come on transitions or mistakes.
For 7 bucks where can you see this level of play be right on the glass and if you want even talk before or after the coaches as they are delighted to talk to hockey people.
Keith Leventhal has spent time with me before games discussing hockey’s in and outs and he is completely a great guy. I travel to games upstate and within CT and there are only slight differences in the quality more so D1 teams need a rink with seating while D3 can go without their own buidings. Playland a great place to see D3 Hockey.

  46. topshelf

    know nothing

I am aware of that but my point is the u18 team had comparable and similar games with the d3 and d1 teams. As much as I don’t believe in comparing scores in evaluating teams in this instance it’s the only way. The main difference in top d1 and d3 is depth and size. I believe the only team in the country with freshmen whose average age is consistently under 19 is BC and u18 team is full of those type of players who will compete and beat those older players

  47. chsaaguy

not south of the canadian border,

    thank you

  48. chsaaguy

    topshelf/anybody else,

are you going to coney island tonight?

  49. CN-Brewster

    predictions for CN-Brewster tonight?

    I say 8-1 CN

  50. topshelf

    chsaa

I am and looking forward to it

  51. fanotgame

My hockey team- that makes 23 for Rye. Not a lot of room for the 24th, as due to weather and an upstate cancellation over the holiday break, the Garnets are scheduled to play 8 games in 19 days right before playoff week.

  52. chsaaguy

    you lucky bstrd

ill be in mt. vernon tomorrow night, but at playland tonight (and tomorrow afternoon)..

  53. ETB

2nite at ice hutch ETB vs. Mt. Pleasant.
Should be fun seeing how it is ETB’s Senior Night and Hockey Night in town so there is expected to be over 350 people at ice hutch 2nite. i am heading down there 2 nite to see what this team is all about, ETB
I predict with all the Energy for ETB, ETB wins 7-3 that is if Jampol stands on his head like against North Rockland but he is young and will be siked out by the Hagen- Sherding duo and don’t expect the MT. Pleasant team to get by the ETB’s Defense.

  54. topshelf

    chsaa

:) I am going to try and make it up for Iona-Step tomorrow too. I will let you know how tonight goes. Enjoy the games

  55. chsaaguy

you too, will let you (and not south of the canadian border) know about the elmira-manhattanville games, pretty pumped

etb, regardless if iona is in playoffs or not, and regardless what happens in the suffern, i’m going to the ip-etb game (looking forward to seeing hagen and co. play a non-public)

  56. loope

    13-CN
    2-Brewster

  57. Also

Also at the Ice Hutch NewRochelle vs Ossining. First place in League 3 is on the line and lets see if NewRochelle can bounce back after there lose to ETB I’m also curious to see how Prunesti is. Heard he got hurt. Should be a great game.

  58. puckinlove

    test

  59. D. 3 vs. D. 1

You are half right that there is not much difference between D.1 and the high end of D. 3 and D. 1 club…

If Boston College played Plattsburg, Salem State, Penn State, or Illinois….The game would not be 10-0, however the D. 3 and D.1 club teams, would get out shot badly and have to play an extremely defensive system. If you remember the old MAAC league which was pretty much a D. 3 league called D. 1, eveyone thought that when they finally did have to play a real D. 1 team they would get crushed. The first time was when Holy Cross had to play North Dakota in the sweet 16. Holy Cross frustrated Zach Parise and crew and only lost 3-2 playing with almost no forechek and just sitting back…...There is a difference in leagues, but not as much as people think.

  60. D3 vs. D1

The big difference is the size of the players in D1. Although the skating, stickhandling, and speed of the game are similar to hight level D3 the D1 guys for the most part are much bigger and stronger than the D3 players.

  61. Taylor

Is PWBV Pleasantville, Westlake, , Valhalla? What’s the B?

  62. chsaaguy

    d3vsd1

you are half right, too. i’d assume BC would handily beat those club teams (illinois, penn state) (the poster “ACHA” might have more insight), but i doubt they’d handily beat plattsburgh

plattsburgh is consistently ranked top 3 in the country (d3)...and bc is not super dominant this year (lost against a small nobody canadian university, new brunswick u.)...bu/northeastern both better than bc this year

  63. ice hutch

One of new ro’s 8th graders actually got carbon monoxide poisoning at last nights practice. He is OK but im not sure if he can play tonight. He is a future star and a solid second line player and will be missed.

  64. chsaaguy

    d3vsd1,

    your size comment,

    agreed.

  65. B

    Briarcliff

  66. Ubi

Are you kidding you have top top players from D1 playing in those league such as the ECHL, CHL, IHL etc.. you guys need to watch some hockey elsewhere and not limit your world to local hockey and where you travel for your “travel hockey”

  67. Pro Hockey

You guys might know about local HS hockey but I doubt 90% of you know enough to comment on: ECHL, CHL, IHL players. Take a look at the rosters for those leagues. It will teach you that there are so many players out there. Makes HS hockey a true house league.

To the person who claims they talked to Keith before and after a game get serious. Keith talks to nobody before or after a game unless your in his way. I should know cause I played for him and barely spoke to him my 4 years. Zero personality!

  68. In the stands

Thinking Maybe Suffern /Mamaroneck would rather get CNorth in their building{semis} as oppose to West Point which is a home game for them? What is your thoughts…
